Rosenstein Vendéglő

Hungarian restaurant
Restaurant
Rosenstein Vendéglő is a renowned family-run restaurant in Budapest, offering an extensive menu of traditional Hungarian and Hungarian-Jewish dishes. Established in 1996 as a simple buffet, it has evolved into one of the city's most popular family-owned restaurants. The warm and welcoming ambiance makes diners feel like they are having a meal at their grandmother's house.
The food we had there was absolutely fantastic! Their chicken in paprika sauce is so tender and smooth. The atmosphere is so relaxed and welcoming. The sserver we had was lovely but you need to have a cheeky sense of humour. We absolutely loved it and we were so happy to find a traditional Hungarian restaurant with good food.
Ellie B — Google review
Food was quite good here. Goulash was average but the spicy chicken and beef dishes (I don’t know the Hungarian names) were really good. Meat was really tender and the spicy sauce was amazing. Would certainly come back given the chance
Allen L — Google review
A real family-style restaurant with long traditions, great service, and most importantly exceptional food. Unfortunately, Hungarian dishes are not the most photogenic (or my photos are lame), yet I can guarantee that the dishes served are both authentic Hungarian dishes (some with a Jewish twist), great in flavour, and very reasonably priced. Overall, great value for money.
József D — Google review
Had lunch at Rosenstein Vendéglő, a long-standing family restaurant known for Hungarian classics and Ashkenazi Jewish dishes done with care. I had one of the chef’s offer dishes — pan-fried goose foie gras in Tokaji sauce — which was rich, silky, and beautifully balanced. Their goulash was excellent too, comforting and full of depth. What surprised me most though was the sourdough bread: crusty, airy, and easily one of the best I’ve had in a long time (and I say that as someone who takes sourdough seriously). It was definitely a memorable meal in Budapest.
Anqi — Google review
I loved everything I eat here. The goulash soup is best I had in town. The Jewish cake was traditional and delightful. The service was professional. They have a huge menu variety and I will definitely come back again.
Amir S — Google review
Beautiful authentic Hungarian restaurant with a charming atmosphere. Received a recommendation from a local friend and we were not disappointed. The menu was extensive and everything we ordered tasted incredible. Professional, prompt service and very reasonably priced for such a good meal - would recommend to anyone.
Andrew S — Google review
The food didn't taste so fantastic for us but it might just be what we ordered. The potato croquettes was very good though. I also liked the desserts. The reservation list was a bit of a mess but might be due to the language barrier. The service could be better but wasn't bad. The place is clean and cozy.
Zandra G — Google review
We ate here based on the recommendation of a local guy my friend met in the train and I’d say that we love our choice of food and it was worth the commute all the way from Visegrad. Didn’t had the photo but we also ordered a gundel pancake as per his recommendation.

Café Kör

Restaurant
Café Kör is a traditional Hungarian restaurant located in Budapest, offering a warm and inviting dining room with vaulted ceilings. The restaurant is known for its wide range of Hungarian dishes, executed to a high standard and not just catering to tourists and expats. Reservations are highly recommended during the tourist season. The cozy atmosphere takes diners back to pre-war Budapest with its classic décor featuring bentwood Thonet chairs and carpeted floors.
we went there during our holidays a two months ago, we were 8 and managed to book in the same day we wanted to go. we arrive in a central location so easy to reach, the place has such authentic and comfy vibe. professional staff, and not so long to wait even if the restaurant was almost full. the food was amazing, i had no words to describe it. really recommended!
Davide P — Google review
Café Kör is one of those classic Budapest spots that feels like it’s been doing things right for a long time—and for good reason. The atmosphere is warm, bustling, and charmingly old-school in the best way. It’s the kind of place where you can imagine locals and visitors sharing tables for decades. The menu sticks to traditional Hungarian fare, and the food is solid—hearty, flavorful, and clearly made with care. We had a great meal overall, with the standout being the daily special. That said, a couple of dishes felt a little safe or under-seasoned, which is the only reason this isn’t a full five stars. Service was quick, professional, and very efficient—even when the place was packed. It’s not overly chatty or warm, but it runs like a well-oiled machine, and that’s something to appreciate. If you want a true local experience with reliable food and a classic Budapest feel, Café Kör is absolutely worth visiting. Just make sure to book ahead—it fills up fast!
Arvydas S — Google review
We immediately found a table when we arrived, and the staff member who attended to us was very kind and attentive. I wanted to try the duck, and it was both delicious and filling with its large portions. The service was quick. The only problem was that a strong smell of food was coming from the ventilation window downstairs, which was quite disturbing for us.
Seda O — Google review
Close to the Basilica. Tried Hungarian dishes here for the first time. Their goulash is delicious. My favorite was part of their lunch menu, the oven baked duck leg. Servings were generous. They have limited non-alcoholic drinks. We ordered lemon iced tea and house-made iced tea. Both served in big glasses. Service was great and they also have clean toilets.
Anna E — Google review
The restaurant has a really cozy atmosphere. They have both a standard menu and a special one with recommendations, handwritten on posters. I ordered the foie gras, and they served complimentary bread — a really good ciabatta. The foie gras was absolutely amazing! So fragrant and rich, with a perfect amount of fat, and the portion was quite generous. The potato slices were also cooked just right. I was totally satisfied — the best foie gras I’ve had in Budapest!
Y ( — Google review
Very good food, the best I had in Budapest, a bit out of turistic ways and it probably influences. We ordered goulash and duck, both were delicious.
Valeria M — Google review
my first time trying out classic Hungarian food! i had a salad and the well-known goulash with croquettes, and the food didn’t disappoint one bit. they actually made a mistake with my salad, as i only ordered a fresh mixed salad but they brought me a fish salad; however they, they only charged me the original mixed salad price. i came here during dinner time on a thursday night but they were able to give me a table right away. the staffs were busy but they were friendly and attentive. would recommend this to others.
Linh N — Google review
This restaurant was a recommendation from one of the locals, stating they served excellent traditional Hungarian dishes. We were so glad we took their advice and had dinner here. The restaurant is located Sas U, which just north of the St. Stephen’s Basilica. The restaurant is a rather small, yet cozy place with only a limited number of dining tables, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. We did see a few tables outside and what appears to be one small table upstairs that night, but they were not being used. The staff of the restaurant were polite, professional, but not overly warm and friendly. We were quickly waited on and it did not take a great deal of time before our dinners were served. The food was wonderful, served hot and everything we had was delicious, in all, a wonderful dining experience. They do add a service tip to your bill automatically just so people know not to tip twice. Finally, when you do enter the restaurant if you look to the right, you will find a scroll on the wall with the specials of the day in English and Hungarian.

Mazel Tov

Mentioned on
3 lists
$$$$affordable
Israeli restaurant
Mazel Tov is a delightful blend of a café and cultural space nestled in Budapest's vibrant Jewish Quarter. This airy venue boasts a charming garden and offers an array of bar snacks, sandwiches, beers, and hot drinks. Unlike the traditional ruin bars characterized by their eclectic decor and vintage furnishings, Mazel Tov stands out with its sleek architectural design that exudes modernity while still embracing the essence of the ruin pub concept.
It was a Lively night. Atmosphere is amazing, it is a beautiful restaurant with tasty mediterranean food. I loved the place. I ordered classic tahini hummus, chicken sharwa plate and jerusalem cheesecake. Amazing. Favorite drink was the The Garderner one - fresh and simply delicious.
Carol P — Google review
We had heard great things and Mazel Tov did not disappoint 😋 No booking but we got there early and shown quickly to a table. Our kind of menu 😋 The mixed starters were great, especially the olives and smoked aubergines. Beer menu is impressive 🍻 Not a cocktail day for us, but a good list there too. Mains were tasty and filling. Recommended
Mark B — Google review
Best food and service of our week in Budapest, our server was attentive and friendly and the building is absolutely beautiful. We’ve ordered the olives, the whipped feta, the chicken sous vide and the shawarma - all of which were generous portions and cooked beautifully. My only slight grumble was that our table was right next to the toilets so we had the constant flapping of the saloon doors, handrier noise and frequent views of the inside of the male toilet stalls - which I would have minded less if we had been squeezed in but we booked a good few days in advance. All in all though I would recommend anyone go to Mazel Tov, it was a real highlight of our trip.
Emma B — Google review
The whole experience going to Mazel Tov was beyond amazing. The atmosphere is comforting and inviting to stay for a while! Everything is green, urban and the music is awesome. We were very lucky to have Mr. Bálint hosting us, he was communicative, smart and a very kind person! The food was delicious and we are very happy to come back! 10/10 points for the whole experience!
Dnlmg M — Google review
Everyone we spoke to suggested this restaurant, which we were lucky to walk into. There was a line for walk ins and I'd highly suggest that you get a reservation, especially if you're a bigger group. The food itself was very good, I would say that the fattoush salad was maybe too "modern" of a take. Yuzu vinaigrette instead of the traditional pomegranate molasses dressing. That being said it was still very good. If you're a Hollywood fan, I noticed they shot episode 7 of Terminal List: Dark Wolf in the courtyard of the restaurant. Look for timestamp 31:30 for the beginning of the scene.
Raj — Google review
Atmosphere, service and dinner menu was amazing. Dessert could have been improved with such high expectations following the main course. However, service (especially Szandra) and main course was amazing. Would definitely recommend and would come back here. I would recommend making a reservation as there was a queue out the door when we came on a Tuesday evening
Gabby S — Google review
Really cool modern place with a ruin bar vibe. Live music, amazing décor, and a great atmosphere. The food was pretty good too. We had falafel, hummus, shakshukas, and two beers for around €60. Worth a visit!
PVS — Google review
Extremely Disappointing Experience I went to Mazel Tov expecting a delightful Middle Eastern culinary experience, but what I got was a masterclass in style over substance. Let’s start with the portions. They are laughably small. You could easily finish a plate in two bites and still be hungry. For the prices they charge, I half expected the dishes to arrive on golden plates with diamond-studded cutlery, but alas, no such luck. Speaking of taste, the food is a pale shadow of authentic Middle Eastern cuisine. Spices are almost nonexistent, the flavors are bland, and everything feels strangely homogenized. Even their so-called “signature” pastrami, advertised as smoked and aged, tasted like it had been boiled and forgotten in the back of a fridge. There’s absolutely no depth of flavor. No smokiness, no seasoning, no passion. It’s a serious insult to anyone who appreciates proper Middle Eastern food. Now, to give credit where it’s due, the presentation is impressive. The food looks beautiful on the plate, Instagram-worthy without a doubt. Too bad that’s where the magic ends. It’s all eye candy. The actual experience is a letdown. You leave feeling like you’ve been part of some elaborate culinary scam, where the main ingredient is disappointment. Honestly, I am baffled by all the positive reviews Mazel Tov has accumulated. Either people are here for the photos, not the food, or there’s some collective amnesia about what authentic Middle Eastern cuisine actually tastes like. Overpriced, underwhelming, and frankly disappointing, Mazel Tov is a cautionary tale. Never judge a restaurant by its décor alone. The vibe is quite nice, but naaaa, it’s just not enough to save the experience. It’s so bad that I didn’t even want to leave the place before I made sure everyone knew just how terrible it is. Save your appetite and your money and go somewhere that actually knows how to cook.

Restaurant
Nestled near the Basilica, Borkonyha Winekitchen is a sophisticated restaurant that earned its first Michelin star in 2014. It offers contemporary cuisine with a focus on Hungarian dishes and pairs them with over 200 local wines. The dining room is elegant, adorned with smart mirror-lined walls. The restaurant takes pride in its nose-to-tail aesthetic and creative reinterpretations of classic cooking, using top-quality ingredients to create exquisite dishes that blend traditional flavors with modern influences.
The experience was great from beginning to end. I had reservations for 18:00 and was immediately seated. They helped me with choosing wines and paid very close attention when I finished my meal and water. Food was very good. I chose the tasting menu and each dish was delectable from start to finish. The atmosphere is very relaxed. I highly recommend!
Daisy C — Google review
Fantastic experience through and through. This is not an uber fancy Michelin location, but it does what you need it to really well. Service friendly, fast and professional. Chef’s gifts were a delight and starters were very tasty. However the mains stole the show, with excellent meat quality and cooking craftsmanship, artfully presented. They were some of the best meals I have ever had in my life. This was excellently complimented by the fantastic wine pairings. Even as a local to area I was able to discover some new Hungarian wines that were simply sublime. If you are going here I would highly recommend the wine pairings! One of the best in Budapest!
Marton S — Google review
Refined, textured, and unforgettable An outstanding Michelin-star experience in Budapest. The chef — a well-known culinary figure in Italy — brings a unique and precise vision to each plate, with a clear emphasis on texture as much as flavor. Every dish felt carefully considered, technically impressive, and deeply satisfying. We enjoyed a very good Hungarian red wine from 2015 that paired beautifully with the courses. The lamb dish was a true highlight — easily one of the best I’ve had anywhere. Across the street, the same chef runs Textúra, a more casual and accessible spot, which is also worth visiting if you're curious to explore more of his culinary world. Highly recommended for those seeking thoughtful, modern fine dining in Budapest.
David * — Google review
This was my treat for my partners birthday - we had a lovely table and a superb meal and wine flight to match. As my partner doesn’t eat sweet things they were accommodating and swapped a cheese course in instead of the dessert element of the tasting menu just for him. Good start! In all the food was superb but we found the up to 30 minute wait time between the tasting courses to be too long and by time the final course arrived we felt it had taken the shine off the evening. Additionally it was clear the sommelier was more interested in the table next to us that were splashing the cash which was a faux pas in my opinion - we chose not to stay on and sought out after dinner drinks elsewhere - it seems not all guests are even here.
Kaye M — Google review
Truly excellent food, wine and service! We had a three course á la carte dinner and recommended local wine, which was absolutely amazing! Perfection in every taste, in every texture. Some tiny details could be improved, like that the wine was a bit late, it should be served before the starter and main course, but that's not enough to withdraw a star, and everything else was absolutely brilliant!
Kristoffer R — Google review
Top notch restaurant in Budapest. Great cost performance, nice service and absolutely amazing food. It works in a traditional fine dining setting, less surprising dishes but quality and taste are well guaranteed. You can trust them to bring you quality food and possibly a great dining experience. I sat indoors while many chose to do outside. Both are fine, highly recommended if you visit Hungary.
David H — Google review
Our first day in Budapest drew to a close with an unforgettable dinner at Borkonyha Winekitchen, our first foray into Michelin Star dining. The experience was truly outstanding, thanks in large part to our attentive Chef de Rang, Dominic. For travelers to Budapest, I heartily recommend indulging in the culinary delights of Borkonyha Winekitchen.
J. M — Google review
This was the one of the best restaurants I visited in years, and if you look at how many restaurants I reviewed, you will see it means a lot. Every dish was wonderful. The wine was delightful. The service was friendly and professional. Thomas the server was knowledgeable and opinionated in the best way. The dish that I really loved was the wagyu and the liver one. I would definitely come back here again.

Restaurant
Gettó Gulyás is a unique and trendy stew place located near the Dohany Street Synagogue in Budapest. The restaurant offers 14 different types of stews, including unconventional options like gizzard and rooster testicle stew, alongside traditional Hungarian delicacies such as bean and mushroom stews. Gulyás, also known as the national dish of Hungary, is a must-try when visiting Budapest.
This place was incredible and the highlight of our visit. I recommend booking in advance. From the moment we arrived the staff were so wonderful. It’s a great space - modern clean decor with a touch of quirky old world charm. Seating is available outside on the sidewalk but we definitely preferred the interior seating and atmosphere. The menu was amazing with so many traditional dishes to choose from. Every single dish was not only beautifully presented but tasted superb. If you’re overwhelmed then just ask the staff to recommend a few things- you can’t go wrong. Local Hungarian wines are such great value and absolutely sensational - highly recommend trying one. Dessert was a perfect sweet finish. Wow, what a place! I can’t recommend this place more highly. Absolute must try.

I had beef stew, an egg spread and a glass of red wine and it was perfect. The food is amazing, the serving is also quite interesting. There are a lot of options to choose from the menu and it might be hard to pick something if you’re not familiar with the local cuisine, but definitely all of them might be worth a try!
Dariia G — Google review
Had such a lovely evening in Gettó Gulyás. The service was second to none and the food was excellent. The wine recommendation was perfect and suited each of our meals. The best meal I've had in Budapest so far (day 4). We got 3 out of the 4 available desserts and each one was better than the next. Absolutely delicious. Long island ice tea will blow your head off, too strong and smoky. But the hugo was 😘👌🏻. Class

Unforgettable food, service, and heart! What an incredible experience. The food and service at Gettó Gulyás were outstanding. We went for lunch and loved it so much we came back for dinner the same night. Roland made it unforgettable with perfect wine pairings, surprise dishes, and a birthday dessert with the waitstaff singing for Larry. Every bite was perfection and the warmth unmatched. Roland, we will never forget you.

I went to this restaurant on the recommendation of a friend who lives in Budapest, and I’m so glad I did. He advised me to make a reservation since the place is very popular, and that turned out to be excellent advice—the restaurant was busy, but welcoming. I started with something unusual: cucumbers with sour cream. It may sound simple, but it was absolutely delicious, especially paired with the fresh bread that came alongside. For my next course, I had a pancake filled with tender veal pieces and vegetables in a flavorful sauce—astounding in both taste and presentation. I paired it with a glass of their Cabernet, which was rich and smooth. For my main course, I had veal with buttered noodles. The noodles were uniquely wrapped in a circle of bacon, adding both flavor and creativity to the dish. Everything was cooked to perfection. The atmosphere is warm and cozy—lively and a bit loud, but still comfortable for conversation. The service was outstanding, and the interior design had so much detail that added to the charm and coziness of the space. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Budapest. It’s a memorable dining experience, and I’m already hoping to return before I leave.

We had such a great experience here! The Báránypaprikás and Borjúpaprikás were absolutely delicious. The meat was perfectly tender (lamb especially, veal a little bit less) and full of flavor. The food came out quickly, and the staff couldn’t have been more friendly and helpful. We booked our table online two days before, and everything went smoothly. Definitely recommend checking this place out!

I was a party of one, and could very quickly be seated by the bar, which is fine. It was a bit tall, making it a bit weird position to eat in. Staff was nice and friendly. I got to try their duck pate with some bread for free, and then the food arrived very quickly after. The lecso was delicious and very rich. One of the best meals I had in Budapest. Perfectly paired with the bread.

Excellent authentic cuisine. If you look for a quality, this is it. We were family of 3, my 5yrs old son got chicken paprikash, a nice waiter brought him cars to play with. He also suggested a great 🍷 wine to go with my and my husband’s dish. We were happy to pay for a quality ingredients used in our dishes. The ambiance was great and even locals come to eat here.

Fine dining restaurant
Babel Budapest, established in 2008, is a Michelin-starred restaurant that reflects the passion of its owner, Hubert Hlatky Schlichter. The restaurant's historical significance is evident in the walls marked by the Great Flood of 1838. With an exclusive seating capacity of only 12 tables, Babel offers an exquisite dining experience rooted in Transylvanian cuisine. Chef Istvan Veres infuses traditional dishes with a fresh twist, drawing inspiration from his childhood meals.
Great food. Well spoken and informed waiters and sommelier. The chef came out and had a chat which was great. We did the 8 course tasting menu which was more than enough for us. Lovely setting but it's a Michelin starred place so it is a bit stuffy but still highly recommend.

We had a really nice evening! The food was good — the turbot soup and the beef were especially tasty and well-prepared; the dessert had a lovely mix of flavours. In general, I was expecting a bit more in terms of presentation and colours, but the taste made up for it. The wine pairing was excellent. The birthday surprise for my wife was a really thoughtful touch. The staff were friendly and attentive, which made the whole experience feel special.

We had a very pleasant dinner and a amazing night. Food is very good and matches the Michelin Guide rating. But beyond the supreme food you will very kind people who pay attention. This makes the dinner perfect. If you want to have a bit of a Hungarian wine journey, the win pairing is highly recommended.

The best meal I ever eaten!!! 13 course menu, each dish was more tasty then the last. Modern Hungarian cuisine, some flavor were mainly for Hungarian taste (the bacon was salty (for my taste) and strong goat cheese cake (but I like it). The best experience I recommend in Budapest The chef is very talented

Szimpla Kert is a must-visit in Budapest, known for being one of the oldest and most famous ruin bars in the city. Located in the Jewish quarter, this huge pub is filled with an eclectic mix of old items and even features a disused Trabant car. The building itself is impressive, adorned with diverse objects hanging from walls and ceilings. Visitors can enjoy live music, food, a market area, and a garden within its alternative decor.
Amazing open-air experience! This place is absolutely fantastic – an open patio with multiple bars, each offering something unique. The atmosphere is vibrant yet relaxed, perfect for any occasion. The cocktails are simply outstanding – creative, perfectly balanced, and beautifully presented. A must-visit spot if you love great drinks and an amazing vibe!

Unique quirky one of its kind bar. It’s definitely worth a visit when in Budapest. We went early evening on Friday before sundown. It was not very crowded. The drinks are not overpriced. Didn’t try any food
Varsha D — Google review
Such a unique place - as a tourist you HAVE to go. Buzzing place at night but particularly I recommend going during the day. You get to see how great this place is and everything it has. Day drinking in a ruin bar will easily become the highlight.
Rituja R — Google review
I don’t go to bars, so I haven’t experienced Szimpla Kert at night, but visiting during the Sunday market was really nice! From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., local producers offer a wide range of fresh and artisanal products, including breads, cheeses, honey, jams, yogurts, pasta, and traditional Hungarian sweets. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, and entry is free—perfect for anyone wanting to explore the local culture in an authentic way.
Luana B — Google review
Hands down one of the highlights of my trip to Budapest. Beautiful randomness. Multiple rooms and vibes. Great music. Great drinks. Amazing ambiance. What more could you ask for?
Eric C — Google review
Such a cool and new experience for me! I went both day and night, and they both had two very different vibes. I would recommend getting a coffee in the morning to explore the flea market as well and at night visiting around 7-8pm to avoid the queue (weekend) and grabbing a cherry ale. The cherry ale was lovely and the interior blew my mind. Strongly recommend to visit!
Emma — Google review
Fun and vibrant spot with great energy! The decor is quirky and full of character, and the atmosphere is lively every night. Drinks are good, though a bit pricey and crowded at times
Sadra — Google review
We visited early evening around 6pm and it was busy but very very touristy. And the service is very poor, plus the drinks are so expensive - we would not go back here as it’s not a “local” experience. So many other places around here with much more atmosphere and authenticity. It’s a series of rooms spread over two floors and centered around a large open courtyard. Saying that, I’m glad we went to see what the hype was all about. But I believe that if you’re in your 20’s then this place is where it all happens and it starts to come into its own after 11pm and into the early hours of the morning!

Meatology Budapest

Restaurant
Meatology Budapest, situated near the Basilica of St. Stephen, is a must-visit for those seeking affordable yet delectable dining experiences in the city. While they offer a variety of dishes including succulent duck and high-quality Angus meats, their specialty lies in deluxe burgers made with premium meat and tantalizing spicy sauces. With prices averaging around 8 euros and a welcoming staff, this restaurant is an essential stop for food enthusiasts exploring Budapest.
My significant other and I had the pleasure of dining at Meatology Budapest twice during our trip, and we were thoroughly impressed both times! The food here is absolutely delicious. So far, we’ve tried the duck, pork knuckles, goose, and the salad with sweet potato fries. Personally, the duck was my favorite—it was cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. I do want to note that the food takes a bit of time to come out, so it’s worth asking your server for an estimated wait time. The staff is upfront about it, as they mentioned during our first visit that it would take a while, which we appreciated. Our second visit didn’t go as smoothly due to a mix-up where our food was served to the wrong table by a new server. That table unfortunately caused a scene, and we ended up waiting for our meals to be recooked. However, the staff handled the situation gracefully—the manager and team sincerely apologized, comped our beverages, and even gave us a discount. Mistakes happen, and their effort to make it right showed their commitment to excellent service. Despite the hiccup, we still returned because the food is just that good! If you’re in Budapest, this is a must-visit spot. The quality of the dishes and the warm hospitality make it worth every minute. Highly recommend! We heard the burgers are really good here!

Everything is great. And I mean everything! Staff. They are friendly and pleasant. In addition, their staff offers informative and comprehensive explanation of their dishes and offerings. I’m impressed how they are so engaged with their customers. Dishes. We ordered their sausage and pork dishes. It was well made. Delicious, scrumptious and tasty. It’s as if they were made from heaven that all it brought was goodness all the way. Service and customer interaction was on point. They will make sure you are going to leave happy. Prices. Reasonable to high although this may be the case, it is worth it. Worth every penny. I highly recommend this and would be a repeat customer whenever I visit Budapest. Please give this a try. You won’t regret it.

A fantastic little place with some fabulous food. Loads of options for steak and burgers but the pork knuckle and the venison with capers are the ones to go for. Very reasonable prices and plenty of drinks options, only down side is it's a tad on the small side so not loads of seating.

We just had some lovely hamburgers. The meat was simply delicious. The fries were very good too. We also tried their desserts and they were very tasty. We can highly recommend it

Great meat spot in Budapest We had the burger with the goose liver (it came with great berry sauce) and the tenderloin burger with fried onions. Both burgers were delicious, and I recommend having both and sharing it. Their fries were good as well. The waiter was friendly and great at serving us. Their steak looks so great and delicious. Unfortunately, we were not able to try it, but many order it.

High quality little bistro close to the St. Stephen’s Basilica. Everything we ordered was delicious from the perfectly done steak to the homemade lemonade. The waiters are very polite and attentive. Not a cheap place but the prices are absolutely reasonable.🥩

On my 2 visits here I was dinning alone which is never fun in a foreign city, but I was incredibly well looked after. The service was amazing, (lots of local tips which was greatly appreciated, especially for the "locals bath house".). For my 1st experience I enjoyed a super steak and yes I did the maths! When it's price per 100 grams you can't complain about what the final cost is!!! I also enjoyed the Sausage with pickles for lunch on my 2nd visit. Some nice local wines are also on offer along with great beer!! Thank you team for helping make my 1st time in Budapest so enjoyable!!

This is the best place to eat in Budapest in our opinion. The food was excellent, we shared a Goulash for starter then Meatology Burger and Steak rib with crispy onion rings fur main. WOW!!! Great food. Service was excellent and the chef comes to your table too. So friendly. This is a really small restaurant so best to book. You will not be disappointed with the price either. Unlike the rest of Budapest, you will not feel cheated or if your money. 100% recommend this.

Gundel Cafe Patisserie Restaurant

$$$$very expensive
Hungarian restaurant
Gundel Cafe Patisserie Restaurant, located in City Park, has a rich history dating back to 1894. Under the ownership of Karoly Gundel since 1910, it has become an internationally renowned venue for Hungarian and French gastronomy. The restaurant is famous for its classic dishes as well as its own unique recipes such as Paloc soup, Somlo-style sponge cake, and the iconic Gundel crepe.
Every visit to Budapest feels incomplete without a stop at Gundel. The restaurant has preserved its timeless elegance, allowing guests to step back into the refined atmosphere of the early 20th century. The cuisine is exquisite — each dish prepared with care and rich in flavor — and the service is consistently attentive and professional. Prices are very reasonable for the quality offered. Dining here is not only a culinary delight but also a journey into history.

Lovely place to have a beautiful dinner. Perfectly situated for a walk to zoo, park area or hero’s square. The traditional but upscale cuisine was very delicious. I’ve decided the Hungarian’s are the best soup makers. It was a nice meal with some service hiccups. The waiter did not have the best grasp of the English language and that was fine, but our glasses of libations were left empty for a while before refilling and our empty serving plates were slow to be taken. A couple of waiters noticing were quick to remedy the young waiter and waitress errors. Live music was divine. Definitely a good choice.

Oh my - I’m always cautious of places like these on the basis that they are simply trading on their name after all this time but I couldn’t not have been more wrong! The food was superb but what absolutely made our evening was how expertly Béla guided us through the wine menu and recommended us a bespoke Hungarian wine flight that both matched our preferred wines and our courses. This guy needs to move towards becoming a sommelier as his knowledge was superb. Thanks for a wonderful last evening in Budapest!

I visited Gundel with my mother during our trip to Budapest, as I wanted to treat her to a special dinner. The restaurant’s strong reviews, elegant atmosphere, and reputation for great food made it an easy choice and it certainly lived up to expectations. From the moment we arrived, the service was outstanding. We were warmly welcomed and guided to our table, and throughout the evening the staff were attentive, friendly, and helpful with recommendations whenever we were unsure. The restaurant itself is beautiful and classy, creating the perfect setting for a memorable evening. I started with an Espresso Martini served in a cappuccino-style cup—a creative and delightful touch. For dinner, we chose the meal + starter/soup option. The staff kindly went above and beyond by serving us two bowls of soup rather than asking us to share one, which was a small but very thoughtful gesture. The goulash soup, in particular, was outstanding - tender meat and incredible flavor. Every dish we tried was excellent, and we truly enjoyed the whole dining experience. The only element I personally wasn’t fond of was the live band walking around the tables asking for money after playing. While some guests may enjoy it, I felt it was a bit out of place in such a refined setting. That said, our evening at Gundel was absolutely wonderful. Both the food and the service were exceptional, and I would happily return. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Budapest!

An outstanding lunch between visiting the museum. Old world elegance, the ambiance is part of the experience. Music was excellent. We ordered their multi-course meal, which was a lot of food. The food was delicious, everything well presented. Very popular, so reserve ahead.
G P — Google review
Gundel is a classic. You feel it the moment you walk in – the chandeliers, the music, the sense of history. Few places carry that kind of presence. The food was wonderful. The foie gras was deep and balanced, the dessert refined and rich. Everything about the kitchen feels confident and precise. The head waitress was excellent – calm, professional and genuinely attentive. But the choreography of the service wasn’t quite in sync. The rhythm slipped here and there, and in a place like Gundel that flow is part of the experience. Still, it’s an extraordinary restaurant. When it all aligns, you’re reminded why this house has become part of Budapest’s story.

Highly recommended! We visited during Restaurant Week and enjoyed a 3-course meal for just 10,900 HUF. Everything was delicious, especially the chicken soup — it’s the best I’ve ever had.
Bebe B — Google review
We visited Gundel twice—first for cake and coffee, which was so delicious and beautifully presented that we booked a table for dinner to celebrate our anniversary. The woman at the front desk gave us a fantastic table (Paul Newman!) and made us feel truly special. The service was some of the best we’ve ever experienced—warm, professional, and attentive without being overbearing. The dinner exceeded all expectations, and the live music created a magical atmosphere. An unforgettable experience from start to finish!

Retro Lángos Budapest

Hungarian restaurant
Retro Lángos Budapest is a popular walk-up joint located near the Arany Janos Square Metro Stop in downtown Budapest. It offers authentic Hungarian lángos, a fried flatbread, served with various toppings. The menu includes traditional options like cheese and sour cream as well as more unique choices such as ham and cheese-filled lángos. This spot is known for its extensive selection of toppings, but many recommend trying the classic combination of sour cream, cheese, and roasted onion.
This was a great place to eat close to our hotel. We had walked past multiple times to see lines out the door for the traditional Hungarian food. The wait was very short and food came quickly. It was fresh and delicious. Extremely well priced and great portions. Staff were very friendly and decor was fun. I noticed there were multiple locations but if you pass by one and you’re hungry, stop in. It’s well worth it.
Peterconstant — Google review
This spot serves up the classic Hungarian lángos—a must-try street food. The portion is good and the taste is nice, delivering that perfect savory, comforting flavor you're looking for. However, be warned: it's too oily. The excess grease makes an otherwise great dish a bit heavy. A positive note for visitors: this location often offers a 10% discount if you're holding a tourist pass or voucher, so keep an eye out for that deal!
Shima — Google review
I honestly did not expect to find gluten-free & vegan langos in Budapest, but this restaurant made it possible even for people with food intolerancies. That is awesome. There is enough chairs to sit inside or outside, no need to book a reservation. This place is very popular, but staff are working really fast. Standard langos is prepared in 2-3 minutes, for gluten-free langos I had to wait around 10 minutes, but it was completely fine for me. The portion is quite generous, I was really full after eating it. Taste was awesome, just like regular langos although this was vegan & gluten-free. Next time I will just ask for more garlic, otherwise it was simply perfect. I know where to stop next time when I am in Budapest.
Tomáš J — Google review
The lángos were absolutely delicious. It gets quite crowded around lunchtime, but it's definitely worth the wait. We tried lángos at several places around Budapest, and I’d highly recommend it. The atmosphere was great, too.
Revanth K — Google review
LOVED the place, so budget friendly, fast, tasty AND clean! For 3 people we paid a total of 38€ (with drinks!) I recommend the Langos with ham and rucolla and the one with chicken tzatziki! Also, for drinks I recommend the Dreher Meggy (has a sweet cherry taste). Would definitely come here again and recommend this place to a friend visiting Budapest :)
Daniela D — Google review
We were told to try the Langos while in Budapest. We chose Retro for a combination of convenience and after searching other nearby restaurants for Langos. We were thinking it would be sit down type restaurant, but you order your Langos at one counter, and your drink at another, which was fine. The food came out quick, afterall, the Langos can be fried/prepared fairly quickly and then topped with your favorites. We enjoyed what we had. Surprised these haven't been introduced here in the states.
Paul A — Google review
Surprisingly good! I was quite concerned about it being fried at first but it wasn't greasy at all. The portion is big and could be more than enough for one person. I was just a bit scared we won't get a table but the turnover is quite fast. People eat and don't linger.
Zandra G — Google review
I got the recommendation to try Hungarian langos here. Place is quite big indoor plus outdoor seating. Service was fantastic. I tried their classic vegetarian Langos. Taste good. So many different varieties available. One is more than enough. Must try place in Budapest.

Transportation in Central Hungary

Getting around Central Hungary can be a little daunting if you’re new here. We can help list some of the major public transportation methods if you don’t want to rely on a car.

Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport

International airport
Airport
Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport serves both domestic and international destinations, with convenient train links to Budapest-Nyugati station. Once you've checked off the must-see attractions like the baths and ruin bars in Budapest, there's still plenty to explore. From discovering 50 unique experiences in Budapest to enjoying innovative cocktails at modern bars, there's something for everyone.
For an airport, Budapest Airport is actually a pleasant surprise. The overall atmosphere feels modern and efficient, but the real standout is the food. It's great, with a good variety of options that are a welcome change from the usual disappointing, fast-food-only airport fare. Here, you can find a solid meal that actually tastes fresh and well-made. Of course, it's expensive—that's just part of the deal with airport dining—but in this case, the quality you get for the price makes it feel like a worthwhile splurge. However, a very important tip for flying out of here is to check your terminal and gate early, because it can be a bit of a walk. The layout is such that some gates are quite a hike from the main food court and security area, so you'll be much happier and less stressed if you're prepared for it. It's the kind of walk that can make you nervous if you've cut your time too close. In the end, it’s one of the better airports to get stuck in. You’ll have a good meal, and as long as you account for the walking, your experience will be smooth. It’s a nice change of pace from other airport experiences where you are left with bad food and a stressful journey.

Spacious, Organized, and Efficient – A Solid 5-Star Airport Experience in Budapest The international airport of Hungary truly offers a well-thought-out travel experience from the moment you arrive. Architecturally, the structure is very well designed — there is plenty of space to move comfortably, which is a rare and welcome luxury in many airports. The layout flows logically, and there’s no sense of crowding even during busier times. After security, you have the option to grab a drink or enjoy some food from a variety of outlets, and then head upstairs to the spacious sitting areas that are ideal for relaxing before your flight. It’s all very user-friendly and efficient, with a calm and modern feel. One point for improvement would be the restrooms: while they are kept very clean, the exclusive use of hand blowers can be frustrating — adding paper towels would be a practical and more hygienic alternative for many travelers. Another area that could benefit from attention is staff language proficiency. While most staff are friendly and helpful, having more English-speaking personnel would greatly improve communication, especially for international travelers needing guidance or support. That said, the airport excels in many other areas: the parking is well-structured, the processing areas such as check-in and passport control move smoothly, the tax refund area is clearly marked and efficient, and overall queuing is minimal thanks to intelligent organization. All in all, Budapest’s international airport offers a clean, efficient, and aesthetically pleasing environment — a great start or finish to any journey.

A clean, modern, and well-organized airport. I was pleasantly surprised by how easy it is to navigate here. The duty-free area is full of souvenirs – you’ll hardly walk out without picking something up. Overall, a smooth and pleasant travel experience.
Nadiia — Google review
The check-in is extremely fast, the airport feels spacious and well-structured, yet easy to navigate despite the openness. Everywhere there is remarkable cleanliness, especially the toilets. Highly recommended for efficient processes and a pleasant environment.
Daniel M — Google review
It’s a small but efficient airport with a decent selection of shops and places to eat including international take out brands like FKC and Burger King. Security was stress free as were the queues and entry/ exit through boarder control. Note once you go through passport control to exit the country there are fewer shops and places to eat but they still had a few. Plenty of seating too. Public transportation to and from the city is well served by the 100E bus albeit it doesn’t have anywhere to secure suitcases and so can get pretty crowded very quickly.

Extremely Disorganized and Frustrating Arrival Experience – Avoid This Airport My recent arrival at Budapest Airport was, unfortunately, one of the worst airport experiences I’ve ever had. From the moment we disembarked, it was clear that there was absolutely no organization or crowd management in place. We were herded into a massive hall with hundreds of passengers and made to stand in line for nearly an hour, with no information, guidance, or staff visible to help. After waiting far too long, we were suddenly told to move to another hall for passport control without any clear signage or direction. To make matters worse, only two passport control desks were open to process what seemed like several planeloads of arriving passengers. The pace was painfully slow, and people were growing increasingly frustrated. Elderly travelers and families with small children were left standing for hours with no seating, no water, and no communication from airport staff. It was a complete lack of planning and consideration. In total, it took around two and a half hours just to get through passport control. For an international gateway meant to represent Hungary, this was an incredibly poor first impression. An airport should welcome visitors efficiently and warmly—not exhaust and frustrate them after a long journey. Budapest is a beautiful city with so much to offer, but the airport experience was nothing short of chaotic, disrespectful, and disappointing. Until major improvements are made in staffing, organization, and communication, I would strongly advise travelers to avoid Budapest Airport if possible or be prepared for a very long and unpleasant arrival process.
AboodAbAj — Google review
The airport is very modern and clean and also the main thing is it's so advance that you don't even have to take out your electronics from your bag just keep it inside and pass through it seamlessly and there is also a facility of safe drinking water inside the airport so you technically don't need to buy a water bottle and also decrease your carbon footprint. Just carry your water bottle with you and fill it .
Abhay S — Google review
The Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport is open 24/7, which is good for overnight layovers. There are chairs without armrests where you can stretch out and sleep, and the air conditioning isn’t too harsh, making it bearable for a night stay. Toilets are clean but not very frequent—you may have to walk a bit to find one. Most shops close at night, so options are limited after hours. During the day, the food court can get very crowded, especially around lunch. Overall, decent for a night, but plan ahead if you need food or comfort.
