Restaurant
Tinamba Hotel, located in the small village of Tinamba, is a historic destination restaurant that has been serving travelers for nearly 150 years. Run by Simon and Tania Johnson, the hotel prides itself on using locally sourced Gippsland produce, including fresh herbs and vegetables from their own kitchen garden. The hotel offers a unique dining experience with its refined luxury and commitment to celebrating local ingredients.
Tinamba Hotel catered our wedding at Mewburn Park. From the moment we got in touch with the Tinamba team they were absolutely outstanding. We first went to Tinamba for a dinner and the food was just so amazing that we had to get them on board to cater our wedding. The food on the wedding day was everything we had hoped for and our guests have raved about the food. We cannot recommend Tinamba enough as caterers or for a lovely meal out!
Caitlin H — Google review
We stopped into the Tinamba hotel for a drink as we were driving through and the publican Simon was amazing. He was so knowledgeable on the local wineries and breweries and super personable. Ended up staying for a few. Its such a beautiful old pub, we cannot wait to go back and have a meal as I've heard amazing things.
Luke A — Google review
The wonderful Tinamba Hotel catered an amazing sit down dinner for 105 guests out of my Mum’s kitchen for our wedding this March. The team’s arrival and pack up were seamless, our most foodie guests were impressed when their signature lamb shoulder was pulled apart at the table, and nobody went hungry when a second round of mains were brought out. Even our guests with dietary requirements raved about the food! In the lead up, nothing was too much trouble. Simon tailored the menu to our tastes, took on board our special requests and was always a fast and friendly communicator, happy to share insights and ideas to plan a crowd pleasing event. Thank you to Simon and his catering team - 10/10!

We went for lunch it was relaxing. Colours inside are sage green and dark timber. Had a delicious minty cocktail. On the - side the water for the table has a funny taste so we ordered bottled.

We had the pleasure of lunching at the Tinamba Hotel today. What an amazing meal. The Barramundi was exceptional and my husband's pork fillet was absolutely delish. Service was impeccable and we will not hesitate to dine there again. Pam & Graeme ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Hogget Kitchen, located in Warrigal, Gippsland, offers a sustainable culinary experience led by head chef Trevor Perkins. The restaurant prides itself on using a nose-to-tail approach for all the meat served and sources ingredients locally to create seasonal dishes. Overlooking vineyards, the restaurant has received accolades for its commitment to minimizing waste and supporting local producers.
The best restaurant hands down. Totally worth a trip from Melbs. The best food, staff and insanely beautiful location and atmosphere. The best chef in town! Also so good with vegetarians and vegans.
Tabitha B — Google review
This an amazing & wholesome farm to table restaurant. There is a lot of great information about what and where your food comes from. I am not going into detail of every dish we had but they all had a lot of thought and technique. There is an important safety issue I like to raise, the entrance from the main road is hard to see, it's pitch back, please add some lights. We will return!
Anthony G — Google review
Loved our experience here. The staff was great and lovely. The dishes were really good and even though we had a slight hiccup on one dish, Chef Trevor really extended the hospitality and offered us another in replacement. Mind you we did not ask for it either, goes to show that he really wanted us to enjoy our time there. Couldn’t be happier with the dining experience. Best dish of the day was definitely the Chestnut pasta! Super yum!
Ernest T — Google review
Wow! We had such a relaxed, leisurely and enjoyable Saturday lunch at Hogget. The service was great and accommodated the various physical needs of our party (deafness and walking difficulties) as well as our various dietary needs (dairy free and vegetarian). The food was fantastic with a focus on local products. Some highlights were the heirloom carrots, mushroom tart and raspberry tart. Highly recommended.
Mel M — Google review
We had a wonderful lunch today, the food was amazing and the service was excellent. Trevor was so helpful explaining the menu and making recommendations (especially with gluten free options for me) and Bella was friendly and lovely! Thank you to Trevor for accommodating us on a last minute reservation. We will definitely be back again!

The staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating, making our lunch experience truly enjoyable. We had a satisfying four-course meal, which was not only delicious but beautifully presented. We sat outside, and they were more than happy to accommodate us, even with our two dogs in tow. We'll definitely be returning to try the six-course menu next time! Visited - 28 Sept 2024

5/5 Great place Great Food Great Staff Clean cosy old school restaurant Had Brisket, gnocchi, chocolate pudding, Ice cream sandwich, cheesecake and lemon juice. Everything was perfect. Someone recommended the place to us and It was a HIT. Last but not least staff was so friendly, polite and had smiles on their face. THANK YOU

First time here today, the meals are different and just so good, I had the lamb neck, and the flavour was wonderful and so tender that the lamb melted in my mouth, I got to try the pie and it was just gorgeous, the service is some of the best I have ever had, staff knew the the menu well and there happy to modify the for vegetarians. There's a counter straight in front you full of some fantastic and interesting deserts. I highly recommended this place for a visit for lunch or dinner, you certainly won't be disappointed. Well done Guys

Amazing lunch, one of the best lamb pies I’ve eaten. The desserts were delicious, we had to take a few to go! It’s fantastic that a place like this exists in Gippsland! I can’t wait to return.
Kat V — Google review
I have always loved the long paddock. We have eggs and bacon and a coffee every time we come and it’s always consistently delicious. Today was the first time we came with our twins, who are very high energy. And the experience was better than I imagined. Our waitress Leah went above and beyond, and was super helpful and kind. We’ll be back, regularly, with our butter eating children because of this morning, so thank you so much.

This beautiful cafe was the highlight of our trip to the area - it’s definitely worth a short detour via Lindenow. Service is so friendly and warm and genuinely welcoming. Tables out front are perfect- fresh air, shaded, and offer a view of green fields and of local life in this tiny hamlet. Lots of tables are available inside too. The food menu is the star of the show - uniquely creative dishes which not only look gorgeous but are packed full of flavour. And make sure you try one of the sensational sweet treats on display in the glass cabinets - you won’t regret it! Great coffee too. Highly recommended.
Gustav — Google review
Delicious as always. I like their salads as they're so much better than what I make at home, though the pate or terrine are always good options as well My partner had the tuna ceviche which was beautiful as well as tasty. Brought home cakes and ice cream for the kids. Everyone was happy. Crusts are delicate and crisp, the lemon curd was a perfect delicate texture and intense flavour. Chocolate tart was rich and good chocolate.

I can say that this cafe is the best out of many cafes I've been to in Australia. The food is unique, delicious and fresh. Coffee also fantastic. I love this cafe.

SARDINE dining

Mentioned on
3 lists
Restaurant
SARDINE Dining, located in Paynesville, is a waterfront restaurant run by the passionate husband and wife team of Chef Mark Briggs and Restaurant Manager Victoria Briggs. The menu changes frequently based on the catch of the day, offering a seasonal selection paired with quality Gippsland craft beer and wines. The restaurant's focus on Gippsland cuisine includes dishes like Lakes Entrance sardines with pine oil and smoked garlic.
Stopped by for lunch before heading to Raymond Island. We didn’t have a reservation but were lucky to snag a table. First time trying seaweed butter—surprisingly interesting and packed with umami. The sardine presentation was beautiful, and the fried whitebait was perfectly crispy and well-seasoned. A great spot for a refined seafood experience. Would definitely recommend!
Jenbala Y — Google review
Absolutely loved our experience at The Sardine last night. My husband and I shared the meals. Everything was perfect. Would love to try many more of dishes on offer. Would definitely return when back in the area. We're travellers from Tin Can Bay, Qld.

What a spectacular experience! From every bite of food to every piece of cutlery and linen picked carefully. I am super impressed with this place. Service, of course was exceptional. Order anything and I can guarantee you, it would be a gastronomic success! If you had one place on your wish list, this will be it!
Karen F — Google review
We had dinner for two on quiet Tuesday night, only 6 guests in Restaurant. Food was well prepared & presented, this was expected considering the price. It would have been nice to met the Chef. The wine selection was outstanding!
Adam G — Google review
We were lucky to come across Sardine Dining on our road trip to Sydney, a spot clearly loved by locals. The menu changes regularly, highlighting seasonal local produce. The nibbles were on the smaller side: the whipped chicken liver pate with cherries nicely balanced the richness of the liver, while the pig’s head croquette was filled with tender, slow-cooked pork. The entrées were definitely the highlight, each served in sharing portions perfect for two. The sardine fillet was a rare treat—paired with sour onion and grapes, it brought a refreshing balance of flavors I usually only associate with kingfish. The kangaroo carpaccio was another standout; though kangaroo can be fibrous, slicing it thinly made it work beautifully, and the horseradish added a clean, sharp finish. The mains were satisfying but less exciting compared to the entrées. The casarecce with blue crab was clearly handmade and had great potential, but the seasoning leaned too salty. The lamb shoulder with chickpeas and capers came in a generous portion, the skin nicely crisped, the flavors felt more conventional after the creativity of the starters. The mustard elk salad with Comté cheese was full of flavor, though you might prefer a lighter, more refreshing salad to go with the mains. Overall, it was still a very enjoyable dining experience, with a relaxed atmosphere that makes it an ideal place for quiet conversation.
Steph G — Google review
The food here is absolutely delicious, and the beautiful plating makes it a true visual delight. The wine pairing recommended by the staff was excellent, and the prices are very reasonable. This is definitely a place worth recommending👍🏻
Jee — Google review
We had a dinner for four with friends. The menu can be done with share options or individual dishes. The food was delicious and to a high standard. We had tasters each st the start then shared mains and indicate desserts. Nice atmosphere and friendly efficient staff. We would return!
Marnie H — Google review
When you expect spectacular and receive average, it does disappoint, especially at the price level. The service was clumsy food delivered to wrong tables, water glasses empty for long periods of time, which isn't what I expect for a restaurant of this calibre. The food was okay, but nothing stood out. For instance the anchovy toast was burnt, the salted cod salad was average, more salty than KFC chips, and the main was just okay, but bacon, mussells, peas and fish is the kind of combo Gordon would question. If I'd paid 75 per head, I probably wouldn't nit pick to the levels, but we paid more than twice that. It may still be the finest food in the area but proceed carefully.

Albert & Co

Cafe
Albert & Co is a charming cafe with a coastal ambiance, offering delightful dishes made from locally sourced ingredients. The cafe's menu features hearty lunch options like wild mushroom pappardelle and fresh fish and chips, all prepared using seafood from nearby boats and eggs and beef from local farms. The cafe's stylish interior reflects the seaside surroundings, while its commitment to showcasing local produce is evident in every dish.
Albert & Co is an absolute gem in Lakes Entrance! The space is incredibly roomy, making it perfect for both large groups and solo visits. There’s even a bar area with extra seating, including comfy sofas where you can relax with a drink. We were a group of 10 family members, and they were able to accommodate us almost immediately, which was impressive. The food is outstanding—everything we tried was fresh, delicious, and beautifully presented. Their smoothies and drinks were just as good, and the coffee was consistently excellent. I visited Albert & Co four times during my week-long stay in Lakes Entrance because it’s by far the most comfortable and inviting spot in town. Despite the high-end ambiance, the pricing is very reasonable and on par with other local cafes. I also loved how easy it was to order from the QR code system—it made the experience so smooth and efficient. In the mornings, it’s a great place to sit with a coffee and get some work done. The atmosphere is always calm and never overcrowded. If you’re looking for a place with amazing food, great coffee, and a relaxed vibe, Albert & Co is an absolute must-visit!
Wendy L — Google review
Foods are good. Surcharge 10% on weekend. Price a little high. The milk shake and the waffle so níce.
Minh C — Google review
This place has beautiful, eye-catching decor with a marine theme that really sets the mood. The food portions are huge and well worth the price. I didn’t ask for chips, and they generously added more salad instead—a nice touch! The fish was delicious and tasted incredibly fresh, straight from the lakes. Great food and atmosphere.
Rosalina W — Google review
A comforting breakfast in Lakes—just what we needed to start the day right. The food was delicious, the teas brewed from quality loose leaves, and the orange juice was spot on—fresh, bright, and full of flavour.
Alexandre Y — Google review
Who don't love good breakfast? That's why we went here. Cafe looked profesional and neat. We ordered the special rightaway. I believe it was zucchini corn fritter and saksuka. We ordered 2 flat whites which come straightaway. Coffee was burn and bitter, I believe maybe so many order for takeaway the barista in rush. We waited more than 30 minutes for our dishes. The cafe not even full. The staff didn't really care that we asked where is our food. I don't know if Albert & Co the corn fritter is normally like that, like uncooked batter and burned outside, once again the staff walk here and there talk with other customers, she saw my unfinished dish didn't bother to ask. Saksuka's egg was cooked which is maybe that's their style. After I checked 1 star reviews, I got it why they didn't care about us.
Regina ( — Google review
Great vibes and beautiful environment. Though it's overly hyped, touristy and a little too pricey. For $7 coffee, I'd also expect a decent size cup of coffee but received a flat white slightly bigger than an espresso.
Aaron — Google review
Once we found this place on our recent trip, we went for breakfast each day and every time was sensational. Generous portions, and everything was very fresh and tasty. Great coffee and wonderful staff.
Dani — Google review
Ordered scones, muffin and coffee takeaway. Coffee was average, muffin looks and taste good but had to wait long time just for the food. Must have forgotten my food order.

Nestled in the heart of Bairnsdale, Northern Ground Cafe, Deli & Wine Bar is a delightful spot that perfectly captures the essence of East Gippsland. With its charming bricked courtyard adorned with overhanging vines, it's an ideal setting to unwind while enjoying local Sailors Grave beers—especially their unique Lemon Meringue Cream Soda. The ambiance is enhanced by live acoustic music from local artists and the warmth of a crackling fire.
Food was incredible. The presentation beautiful and flavours balanced. So glad we stopped for lunch on our trip back to Melbourne. Team are lovely and the outdoor seating in the back was peaceful, shaded with grape vines and dog friendly (bonus, water bowl filled)
Elizabeth G — Google review
Only came here for coffee based on recommendations. So disappointing to get the same crap coffee every other cafe in Bairnsdale is serving. Clearly no barista on coffee. Although staff are very sweet and polite it’s really a good coffee I’m after see pics obviously one is made by a barista and the other was the weak bad coffee served here. Please owner train your staff to make better coffee.
Eileen ( — Google review
Absolute best breakfast my Fiance and I have ever had, there were some flavour profiles we've never experienced before and I'm so glad we stopped in. Absolutely cleaned the plates, had to slow ourselves down to make sure we properly enjoyed the experience. Everyone was so friendly and clearly had a lot of passion for their food and beverages. Loved that they use as much fresh produce from the area as they could get their hands on. Excellent food, great coffee, incredible people. Very quick service too, which didn't compromise the quality at all. Would absolutely recommend you eat here!!
Chelsea M — Google review
This place is exactly what Bairnsdale needs! Excellent food, attentive service and a nice atmosphere. It is on the expensive side, but worth it for the quality of the food. This is definitely Melbourne’s standard of cafe culture. We ordered coffee and toasties (the ham and cheese and the halloumi). Both were delicious. Can’t wait to go back and try something else from the menu!
Caitlyn H — Google review
What a wonderful restaurant/cafe. Absolutely delicious food. We dined on mussels, a Caesar salad and a fungi salad and each of them were beautifully presented and exquisite to eat. Great service, and a lovely outdoor space to enjoy your food as well.
Suzanne G — Google review
Ploughmans Lunch… it’s a must! This wonderful cafe/restaurant was recommended to us. The Ploughmans Platter showcased produce from this region. Being a confirmed “coffee snob”, I was impressed that my coffee was brought to me just how I like it. Thank you to the staff. Very impressed.

Lovely little cafe on our way to merimbula, decided to stop at bairnsdale for a lunch break. It’s on the main St and very easy street parking. We ordered the Caesar salad and a couple of their sourdough toasties, it was delicious, and also very filling. The staff are also very friendly and attentive, the food came quick and the price is fair for the quality, I would definitely visit again on the way back for their other delicious options on the menu, they also got a little outdoor garden in the back, what a jam!!! Highly recommend!!

The bar staff are great. We ordered our lunch first at 12 noon. Multiple tables were served first. Our food arrived 55 minutes later and were told it takes 45 minutes to cook a medium rare steak.
Michael K — Google review
Ordered a medium steak but got served an almost well-done one. Service quality also not up to par as no one gave us cutlery after food were served.
Liu K — Google review
Very nice staff. My reservation actually didn't go through and they were kind enough to give us a table. Very nice dinner. I had the Porterhouse steak. It was slightly cooked more than medium rare. It was good/average. I was expecting a better country steak. Had a great night though.

An unforgettable experience at Sodafish. The food and wine were absolutely exceptional, highly recommend the king fish and the scollops. We sat out on the deck with the winter sun, and it truly felt like heaven. The staff were incredibly nice and welcoming, and to top it all off, we were sent home with a freshly baked loaf of their bread. A perfect day in every way!

Fine dining in a beautiful beachside setting. We chose to enjoy the 3 course Chefs Signature Tasting. Each dish was exceptionally well thought out, and beautifully paired with an accompanying wine. Our host Mary was warm and friendly, and exceptionally knowledgeable on local food and wine. Chef and owner Nick was accommodating of my allergies, and went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. Highly recommend.
Emilie R — Google review
Ordered the signature set $65 pp. We were expecting a satisfying meal with delicious local seafood. However, we were disappointed. First of all, the portion was very small for each course and we both left the restaurant still famished. We just can’t wrap our heads around how we spent 100 over dollars on a meal and still be hungry. Secondly, we waited for 30 minutes in between each course and that really spoiled our dining experience. And I saw every customer around us waited for a long time for their food as well. The taste of the food was fine, not mind blowing but the seafood was fresh. However, I think the restaurant should have simpler cooking methods that highlight the beautiful quality of local seafood.
Jacqueline L — Google review
The staff were friendly & welcoming, food was amazing. We booked dinner and the atmosphere and lighting was very inviting. Would definitely dine again when back in Lakes Entrance.
Paul C — Google review
Everyone recommended dinner @ Sodafish but it fell short on service and main course. I ordered the Taste of Sodafish, a 5-course tasting dinner menu! The starters were served so fast I had to tell the server to slow down - I upgraded to the wagyu steak stead of the catch of the day - Dory - and ordered it ‘rare’ but was served medium - later I learnt that because it was sous-vide, it was cooked medium … it would have been helpful to know this at the time of ordering or be advised if the temperature beforehand to make a better decision! Overall I was not impressed!

We were travelling back from Mallacoota to Melbourne and stopped for lunch. It was raining, windy and cold but the staff were so helpful setting up a table for three with a gas heater at the deck so we could eat with our dogs. The food was amazing and the staff were very attentive and friendly. A must for anyone who wants incredibly fresh seafood in a lovely setting on the water.
Charlie A — Google review
I celebrated my birthday at Sodafish, and it was an unforgettable experience. We enjoyed a 6-course meal called the Taste of Sodafish, with wine pairings for each course, while watching the sunset over the harbor. The view was stunning and made the evening even more special. Every dish was beautifully presented and full of flavor. Our favorites were the octopus skewer, the fresh tuna crudo, the melt-in-your-mouth Black Opal wagyu scotch fillet, and the warm madeleine with honey parfait for dessert – a perfect ending. The food, wine, and atmosphere combined to create a celebration worth remembering. It was definitely worth it, and I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a fine dining experience by the water.

I ordered the 5-course dinner, and I was thoroughly satisfied with each course – everything was delicious and well-presented. Highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a great dining experience!

We were excited to try Neilsons Kitchen & had high expectations. Unfortunately we didn’t enjoy our experience as much. The gluten free option were not great. Some of the food was delicious but very comparable to more affordable and gluten friendly restaurants in the area. A couple of menu items we did not enjoy (entrees were yum but mains weren’t very enjoyable). Our service/atmosphere experience felt a little awkward. Definitely on the pricey side also.

Stopped by on our road trip back home - definitely worth it! We had a group of 6 and chose to have the 2 course selection. The entrees and mains came out at their respective times alltogether. The food was so fresh and a big portion! Service was amazing, and the atmosphere was a vibe. I don't usually make reviews, so take that as you will! ♡

A spur of the moment decision to stop for lunch as we were driving back from Sale. This turned out to be the highlight of our trip - extraordinary restaurant with excellent food, great service. We asked for a 5 course meal without red meat and they not only accommodated our request but served us the best food we've tasted in a while. Special mention about the staff - they are as exceptional as the food here. Thank you, you turned a good day into an exemplary one.

Arriving on a cold night, the cosy space presented well, minus an open fire, sadly unlit. The menu was not overly filled and a good system of course selection or the chefs choice. Cocktails were pricey, however a full glass and well balanced. Entrees' pasta dish was a highlight, wonderful balance of flavour and silky soft pasta with dressings complimenting. Oysters were fresh and tasty. Scallops were a fail, though, overcooked with little redeeming quality in the sauce. Kangaroo tartare was overpowered by beet chips and was ordinary but edible. Mains were sadly very disappointing, lamb was flavoured. However, complete lack of texture made the dish very average. Went back half eaten. Pork schnitzel was sadly overcooked, and the sauces and accompanying trimmings were poorly balanced. Went back half eaten. However, dessert was an improvement. Highly recommend the souflee with a great balance and rich chocolate sauce and an outstanding icecream to go with. For a $200 meal, pretty dissapointing to return mains and entrees were very average. Staff were appologetic and offering alternatives, compensated with additional cocktails, however sadly, over all a disappointing experience.

This is a delightful restaurant and we had a very enjoyable Saturday lunch with friends. The restaurant was very busy but the staff were able to fit us in without a reservation. The menu was very interesting and we enjoyed all our dishes including the slow cooked lamb gnocchi, ox cheek with porterhouse steak and barramundi. Food and service were great and it was good value for money.

Went for dinner here. There was an option of 2 or 3 course menu. We went for 3 course. The portions were huge. Apart from the 3 courses , we added some extra. Dessert were the best. But did not like where we were seated. Next to the toilet.

We celebrated our first wedding anniversary here 10 years ago, which was disappointing but we decided to give it another shot for our 10th anniversary. Again, we were disappointed. We weren't shown to our table, rather pointed in the direction of, then almost forgotten. We had to ask for drinks, and let a passing waitstaff know we were ready to order. They told us about steak night, but no specials mentioned or unavailable menu items. We went for the 3 courses. Meals were tiny, and no one suggested we order sides to go with our mains when we were ordering. The food was nicely presented and tasty, but the service was terrible, as was the level of noise. I don't think we'll give them a third try.
