Riga Central Market

Market
Shopping
Riga Central Market is a sprawling market located by the river, featuring both indoor and outdoor stalls offering a wide variety of goods. The market is housed in five historic buildings that were originally Zeppelin hangars, with each building specializing in different products such as fruits and vegetables, fish, meats, and more. The unique architecture of the market adds to its charm, with its metalwork dating back to the 1920s.
Riga Central Market is a vibrant and fascinating place to explore, and one of the largest and most unique markets in Europe. Housed in impressive former zeppelin hangars, it offers a mix of history, culture, and local flavors all under one roof. The variety is incredible—you can find everything from fresh fruits, vegetables, and meats to local cheeses, smoked fish, baked goods, and traditional Latvian delicacies. Outside, there are also stalls with clothes, crafts, and souvenirs. The atmosphere is lively and authentic, giving you a real taste of everyday life in Riga. It’s the perfect spot to try local snacks, meet friendly vendors, and take in the aromas and colors of Latvian cuisine. ⭐ Tip: Visit in the morning for the freshest products and fewer crowds.
Maria C — Google review
If you like great food at a reasonable price, the central market is waiting for you. SO MUCH FOOD! Everything was fresh and was as alluring to the nose as it was to the palate. So much variety, you will hardly know where to start. It's even fun if you're not hungry... just walk around and take it all in. Definitely recommend!
Paul C — Google review
The best open market I’ve ever visited. Traditional meeting the modern in a wonderful mix. Vegetables, fruits, nuts fish, poultry, beef, clothes and lot of other things. I will be back.
Joel M — Google review
I visited Riga Central Market, and it was such a vibrant experience. The market is huge and full of life you can find just about everything here, from fresh flowers and local foods to meats, cheeses, spices, and handmade goods. It’s a great place to discover authentic Latvian flavors and everyday life. The market is set inside historic old Zeppelin hangars, which gives it a unique and impressive atmosphere. Each pavilion specializes in different products, making it easy to explore and sample a wide variety of items. I especially enjoyed seeing the fresh produce stands and traditional Latvian treats. It’s not just a place to shop—it’s also a cultural experience, perfect for walking around, tasting, and soaking in the local vibe. Prices are fair, and you’ll find both locals and tourists enjoying the market. If you’re visiting Riga, this is definitely a must-see. 📍 Location: Nēģu iela 7, Riga, Latvia
Natalie A — Google review
Nice and quick lunch spot in the gastronomy market they have different restaurants where you can have local food and buy local cheeses and souvenirs. A nice quick stop in the city. Haven’t take any picture of the dumplings but they were very good.
Giulia T — Google review
Great place to sample the local food. There are plenty of fruit and veg stalls, flower stalls and clothing stalls as well as a food market inside. They sell all the traditional dishes for extremely reasonable prices so a great way to eat like the locals. It’s a vibrant, buzzing area that’s definitely worth a visit.
Mel P — Google review
This place is just HUGEEEE! Lots of different departments, one for fruit, veg, others for meat, fish. cheese, deserts. All different ranges and prices depending on who you buy from. Some prices get cheaper along the way. There is a food department where you can eat lots of food again, depends where you want to eat and what you want to eat. But it is so big you’ll definitely leave with something. Clothes also. We walked here as we seen it was difficult to get parking 🅿️ There was a dumping food stall that was just … beautiful 😍 it’s hard to get a seat because in the food area lots of people are piled up.
M L — Google review
A very wide assortment of articles on offer in the five former zeppelin hangars and at stall outside. Numerous local specialities at sensible prices. The fish names were especially confusing. Just a short walk from the train station and bus stops.

The Freedom Monument, a 42-meter statue located in the city center of Riga's Old Town on Freedom Boulevard, is a striking landmark that pays tribute to Latvians who fought for independence between 1918 and 1920. Unveiled in 1935, this beautiful monument features a granite base with sculptures and bas-relief, a 19-meter travertine column, and a copper figure of Liberty holding aloft three gilded stars.
The Freedom Monument in Riga is a must-visit! A beautiful and meaningful landmark that represents Latvian independence and pride. The area around it is also lovely, with a peaceful park nearby that's perfect for a stroll or just relaxing. A great spot to take in some history and enjoy the city’s charm.
Bishal U — Google review
The Freedom Monument of Riga is located at the centre of old town of Riga. It was built between 1931 to 1935 to commemorate the soldiers killed during the Latvian war of independence. The monument is 42.7 meters in height, made up of granite and copper. The three stars at the top represent the historical unity of the Latvian nation. The location of the monument is walking distance from most part of Riga. The monument is beautiful and the area surrounding of the monument is equally beatiful with flowers and greeneries. Nice place for taking a walk or relaxation.
Soudamini M — Google review
The Freedom Monument in Riga stands proudly at the heart of the city, symbolizing Latvia’s independence and the spirit of its people. Just steps away, you’ll find the charming Bastejkalns Park, the elegant Opera House, and the bustling Old Town, each offering its own unique charm. A visit to Riga would not be complete without pausing at this monument and exploring the vibrant landmarks that surround it.

Freedom Monument – Riga We visited the Freedom Monument last Sunday on a cold, drizzling day, which somehow made the atmosphere even more powerful. Standing tall in the heart of Riga, the monument is a striking symbol of Latvia’s independence and resilience. Built in 1935, it honours those who gave their lives during the Latvian War of Independence, and remarkably, it survived both Soviet and Nazi occupations as a quiet but steadfast reminder of national pride. Even in the grey weather, the monument and the surrounding area felt peaceful and dignified. The eternal flame and the changing of the guards add a special sense of respect and history. Definitely worth stopping by—whether for the history, the symbolism, or just to take in one of Riga’s most meaningful landmarks.
Tom C — Google review
A Powerful Symbol of Latvia’s Spirit The Freedom Monument is one of the most important and iconic landmarks in Riga. Standing tall and proud in the heart of the city, it’s a powerful tribute to Latvia’s independence and resilience. The sculpture is striking, and the surrounding area — especially with the canal and Bastejkalna Park nearby — makes it a beautiful spot to visit, reflect, and take photos. I’ve passed by many times but haven’t yet had the chance to attend one of the ceremonial guard changes or national events here — hoping to catch one in the future. Even without stepping closer, the atmosphere around the monument feels respectful and meaningful. It’s a must-visit for anyone wanting to understand Latvia’s history and national pride.
Amir A — Google review
The Freedom Monument (Brīvības piemineklis) is a must-see in Riga, symbolizing Latvia’s independence and national pride. It's beautifully located in the city center and perfect for photos, especially at sunrise or sunset. Changing of the guard happens hourly—don’t miss it! Tip: Combine your visit with a walk through Bastejkalna Park or stop by the nearby Old Town. Benches nearby offer a great rest spot. Ideal for history lovers and first-time visitors!

Spectacular monument in the heart of Riga. The Riga sign and Laima clock is also located here. Large space to wander around.

St. Peter's Church

Mentioned on

Lutheran church
Sights & Landmarks
St. Peter's Church is a medieval church with a remarkable 123-meter-high steeple, dating back to the 15th century. The main attraction here is the Clock Tower, offering a breathtaking panoramic view of Riga's cityscape and the charming red roofs of the Old Town. Despite its troubled history and multiple renovations, it stands tall as an iconic landmark in Riga. Visitors can enjoy various tours, including a popular walking tour that showcases the city's rich history and culture.
I would recommend this place for a good viewing point of the city. The church inside is nothing special, but the views from the point are worth the ticket price. As others have mentioned, there may be a queue for the lifts, both to go up and come down since there is only one lift in operation and takes only around 10 people each time. The views are nice when the weather is good, but the platform at the top is not too big, and as it's all outdoors, it can be a bit windy.
Ai — Google review
Beautiful church right in the heart of Riga’s Old Town. St. Peter’s Church is an impressively restored building, with restoration work still ongoing. A highlight is the elevator ride up the tower – the elevator may feel a little shaky, but it takes you safely to the top. From there you get a fantastic view over Riga and the Old Town. Definitely a worthwhile stop on a city walk.
Yo L — Google review
Really beautiful church, well worth stopping by even if not religious. The building is stunning & the architecture is immense. You can pay extra to go up in the tower, which is an incredible experience. You get panoramic views of the whole city, including the river. It's a bit scary at first as the lift opens directly out onto the tower, but definitely power through!
Tyler L — Google review
St. Peter’s Church in Tallinn is one of those places where history, architecture, and atmosphere all come together beautifully ⛪✨. The church itself has a calm, almost timeless feel to it—like it’s been quietly watching the city change for centuries. The high ceilings and intricate details make you feel both small and amazed, the kind of place where you whisper automatically even if no one tells you to. What I loved most was how it blends solemnity with charm. It’s not just about bricks and stained glass; it’s about stories, traditions, and that sense of being part of something much larger than yourself. And of course, like every good historic church in Europe, it also gives you that gentle reminder that your photography skills will never do it justice. 📸😂 Whether you’re into history, architecture, or just need a quiet escape from the bustle of Tallinn, St. Peter’s Church is worth stepping inside. It’s a place that makes you pause, reflect, and maybe even wish your own ceiling at home was a little more “cathedral-like.”
Arnab — Google review
The only thing I liked was the panoramic view of the city from the top. Entrance fee is high. You pay 8 euro to see the church only. And 13 to see the tower. There is a girl who works inside the lift (in this heat). Her job is to collect the tickets. She can’t leave the lift while it gets stuffed with people all the time in that hot weather. I suggest finding another way in collecting tickets and not inside the lift! So overall the view from the top was amazing but the entrance fees and procedures need a serious review
Zina A — Google review
9EUR to visit the church and do up to the tower via 3 flights of stairs and an elevator. As soon as you step out of the elevator you are on the viewing platform which can be very windy but views are beautiful especially with nice weather. Church itself is nice and peaceful.
Yeesh R — Google review
It is a very beautiful place, here you will find ancient bas-reliefs and beautiful sculptures. You can take an elevator to the tower, from where there are very beautiful panoramic views. The cost is 9 euros.
Anane K — Google review
You can't beat the views from the bell tower! Plus, there was an elevator!! The church was beautiful and worth seeing. If you like history, this church dates back to the 13th century AD. I definitely recommend a visit!

House of the Black Heads

Museum
Sights & Landmarks
The House of the Black Heads, a Gothic-style property constructed in 1334, showcases medieval cellars and a remarkable presidential silver collection. Despite being bombed during World War II, the building's architectural splendor was restored in the 1990s. Its Dutch Renaissance-inspired appearance features vibrant colors and exquisite ornamentation. The adjacent municipal square was built concurrently with the palace. Visitors can admire its stunning facade and explore museum exhibits and a re-created grand conference hall inside.
An absolute must-see in Riga! The House of the Blackheads is one of the most beautiful buildings in the Old Town — its stunning facade and detailed sculptures are breathtaking. The interior is equally impressive, with elegant halls, historical artifacts, and a fascinating medieval cellar that’s the only original part of the building. It’s hard to believe this place was destroyed in WWII and rebuilt in the 1990s — the reconstruction is so detailed, it feels like stepping back in time. Staff were friendly, and the exhibits are well organized and available in several languages. Perfect for history lovers, architecture fans, or anyone exploring Riga. Highly recommended — give yourself at least an hour to fully enjoy it!
Bishal U — Google review
Nice to see. Impressive reconstructed fassade. Nice exhibition inside but not necessary to pay entrance and to see the view rooms. For longer stay or if you are really interested. Otherwise just enjoy it from outside
Micha D — Google review
Certainly one of the iconic places in Riga. I recommend getting an audio guide for your visit. There are several options how you can combine your ticket, also with drink or coffee. Staff is helpful in explanations.
Uwe J — Google review
The House of the Black Heads is one of the most iconic landmarks in Riga’s Old Town. Originally built in the 14th century as a guild for unmarried merchants, shipowners, and foreigners, it has always been a center of culture and celebration. The building you see today is a faithful reconstruction, as the original was destroyed during World War II. With its striking Gothic façade decorated with Renaissance details, it is a masterpiece that reflects Riga’s rich history and vibrant spirit. Inside, you’ll find beautifully restored halls, exhibitions about the city’s past, and a glimpse into the life of the Brotherhood of Black Heads. I warmly recommend adding the House of the Black Heads to your itinerary when exploring Riga. It’s not only a chance to admire one of the city’s most stunning architectural gems but also to step into a place where history, art, and culture truly come alive.
Khalil B — Google review
Wonderful museum and reconstructed building. The original building was completed destroyed in the Second World War, and the present building was opened in 1999 but it's a beautiful replica as close to the original as possible and an iconic building of Latvia. The outside is spectacular and the indoor tour starts with a tour of the original foundations in the basement and historical information. The upper floors are grand hallways and stately rooms which are impressive. One of our favourite buildings in Riga.
David P — Google review
A stunning gem in Old Riga with a captivating façade that reflects centuries of history. Originally built in 1334 for merchant gatherings and later home to the Brotherhood of Blackheads, this landmark features ornate Renaissance-Mannerist ornamentation added in the 1600s and late‑19th‑century sculptures by August Volz. It was destroyed in WWII and lovingly reconstructed from 1996–1999 with public and city funding. Today it houses a museum and elegant ballrooms, offers multi‑language audio guides, and displays a medieval cellar dating back to the 14th century. Perfect for history lovers and architecture fans!
Abhiraj C — Google review
The Museum of the Black Heads was one of the cultural highlights in Riga. The building itself carried real presence, with an exterior that immediately set the tone and an interior that matched in detail and design. The exhibits were well presented, covering the history of the Brotherhood of Black Heads in a way that was accessible but not oversimplified. The collection of artefacts, furniture, and decorative pieces gave a strong impression of the wealth and influence the guild held, while the layout made it easy to follow the story from room to room. Staff were helpful and kept the flow organised without interrupting the visit. The overall experience combined architectural impact with historical context, making it a site that showed both Riga’s heritage and its sense of pride in preserving it.
Omer M — Google review
Incredible restoration of a totally razed building! I also appreciated how my journalist credentials were accepted for free entry. There are English translations for each placard in each room. Not many visitors the day I went (Tuesday afternoon). Beautiful space that has been well-renovated.

The Museum of the Occupation of Latvia is a historical institution dedicated to educating visitors about the period when Latvia was occupied by the USSR and Nazi Germany. With over 60,000 exhibits and an extensive audiovisual archive featuring more than 2,300 video testimonials, the museum provides a comprehensive overview of Latvia's history during this tumultuous time. It aims to remember and commemorate those who suffered unjustly during the occupations, including deportees, refugees, and those who were convicted or murdered.
Utterly incredible storytelling. Really enjoyed the unfiltered material, honest and brutal in instances. Highly recommend. If you want a full experience to read everything, take 1.5 to 2 hrs, but obvs can be done in less.
Nadia G — Google review
Good exhibition if you want to learn about the history of latvia during the 2nd world war and the period after until the 1990s. Would recommend the audio guide and if you are interested in reading more about the exhibits to plan in around two hours.
Uwe J — Google review
Be sure to allow time in your visit to Riga to tour this museum. Ideally visit when you can take the guided tour with a staff member. we did and it added so much more context to the visit. I would allow two hours if possible. Great bathrooms and lockers to make your visit even easier. no café but nearby there are many places to grab a cup of coffee afterwards and process what you’ve learned.
Hillary M — Google review
While I fully recognize the historical significance and tragic weight preserved by the Museum of the Occupation in Riga, my overall experience fell short of expectations. The museum is notably not child-friendly; the atmosphere is overwhelmingly somber and silent, evoking more of a funeral ceremony than a space for historical engagement. Aside from a single screen presenting the events, there is little in terms of interactive or visually engaging exhibits that might capture a visitor’s attention or curiosity. I would not recommend visiting with children or unless you have a strong interest in and prior knowledge of Latvian history. Moreover, the lack of warmth from the staff is palpable—there were no smiles or welcoming gestures that could ease the heavy tone of the visit. A simple smile can go a long way in making history more accessible and inviting, and sadly, that human touch was missing.
Axmed A — Google review
Dramatic museum about Latvia's traumatic recent history under the Soviet and Nazi occupations during the second world war and up to 1991. Lots to read and there are some dramatic films and exhibits. Makes you want to celebrate Latvia's independence with them by the end and wave a Latvian flag! There are lockers for bags but no cafe (there are restaurants nearby).
David P — Google review
I very much enjoyed the tour of the museum of occupation. I took a guided tour that was excellent as it manage to convey feeling and perspectives related to this difficult time of history. I also visited the KGB museum but f2la the occupation museum provided me with more fact and information. I highly, highly recommend taking a guided tour as it really help with the understanding.
Emma — Google review
Bloody hell, this place is sobering. Very well presented. Moving, depressing, enlightening. You come here and you realize why Ukraine is fighting for its life. You realize the terrible toll on the Baltics. You want to go and wring the necks of the gutless NATO country leaders. If Russia was in your backyard you would be thinking very differently.
Chris T — Google review
A super interesting collection detailing the Soviet Occupation of Latvia and the struggle of the people to reestablish their sovereign state. We did an English tour that was pretty rushed. We went back through the entire museum. It is laid out in chronological order and there is a "path" to follow. There's a cute teddy bear character that might keep kids interested with a few interactive displays. There are adult interactives also. The museum tells the tale of brave resistance fighters and you leave with a sense of the great national pride that Latvians have today, as they should !

Concerts & Shows
The Latvian National Opera and Ballet, a 19th-century neo-classical theater, is home to the national opera and ballet companies. It transcends language barriers in its performances, making it an ideal destination for cultural enthusiasts. The institution has nurtured internationally acclaimed talents such as Sonora Vaice, Elina Garanca, and Andris Nelson. Collaborations with renowned soloists and directors result in exceptional opera and ballet productions.
The Latvian National Opera House is one of Riga’s most elegant and iconic buildings. Its architecture is absolutely stunning — classic, grand, and perfectly situated right next to Bastejkalna Park and the canal. Every time I walk by, I’m amazed by how picturesque and well-preserved it is, especially when lit up in the evening. Sadly, I’ve never had the chance to see a performance or step inside, but it’s definitely on my list. If the interior is anything like the outside, I’m sure it’s breathtaking. Even just admiring it from the park nearby makes it worth a visit. A must-see for architecture lovers and anyone exploring central Riga!

Very nice place and I'd love those green based colour with golden inside. Opera performance, It costed 45Eur max for those ordinarily title opera performance, but we'd Lough and loved them. We are not Latvian speakers, so the caption for translation was necessary. If we knew it comes at the upper end of stage, we didn't get tickets for those first floor seats as it was a little lower level than the stage itself. Next time we are buying tickets for the seats at second floor.Ladies and gentlemen's room was at the left side of the first floor and hard to find it. As I got there, there was a long line. So those need restrooms should go right away for the brektime.
Mio M — Google review
A very beautiful and, it may sound a bit strange to say, but cozy opera house. Comfortable seats, professional performers, and everything is well organized and thought through. Even during the intermissions, there were no long lines at the bar or the restrooms. Overall, a great experience!
English D — Google review
Beautifully restored building. Very good acoustics. Small enough so that all seats are good. Both Opera and Ballet; and occasionally Orchestral concerts or musical performances.
Boston C — Google review
Went to see Don Giovanni and overall, the experience was as expected. The performance itself was solid, and the atmosphere had the classic charm you’d hope for. A definite plus were the affordable ticket prices – great to see opera made more accessible. On the downside, the seating was quite cramped. The chairs were too close together, which made it a bit uncomfortable, especially for a longer performance.
Boris H — Google review
I was there for La Traviata, it was beautiful. The opera house itself is gorgeous, and the performance was great. 10/10 experience, I would definitely return. I suggest buying tickets a few weeks in advance to get good seats :)
Uesegi — Google review
Fantastic ballet. One of the bests I have ever seen. If you pay a trip in Riga, definitely worth it to book a visit to the ballet in opera.
Ling P — Google review
A beautiful building! A big stage, gold decals and such. The staff was nice and helpful and the prices were not too steep, just what you would expect from a theatre or opera house. I was a bit sad that they only offered cake and little canapés as food. I watched the Premiere of the Opera in the picture and it was just done beautifully. Very engaging, I didn’t feel bored at all and I really liked the movable wall. A very good experience there, if I ever come back to Riga I will go there again!

National museum
The Latvian National Museum of Art stands as a magnificent testament to the country's rich artistic heritage, housed in an impressive neo-Classical building that dates back to 1905. With its stunning Baroque and classicist facade, this museum is a must-visit for anyone eager to delve into Latvia's classical art scene. The museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the nation's history through its diverse collections, showcasing how Latvia has perceived itself and interacted with other cultures over time.
The Latvian National Museum of Art is truly impressive. The architecture alone is stunning – from the beautifully restored main building to the rooftop with its striking white-painted wooden beams, all the way down to the modern exhibition spaces in the basement, which even include a glass-walled storage area showcasing another 4,000 paintings. The museum offers changing exhibitions with Latvian artists. Honestly, I hadn’t heard much about them before, but the main exhibition features some really great paintings that left a strong impression. It’s definitely worth checking ahead what the current temporary exhibition is, as they add even more variety to the visit. If you’re interested in art and find yourself in Riga, this museum is absolutely worth a visit.
Yo L — Google review
My wife and I stopped by here on the weekend to see this great national museum. I suggest paying for the full ticket (all exhibits) to see some other pieces of art from other countries. Overall, I thought it was a great visit. It is well laid out and very spacious. You never feel like you are in a rush to see a piece and never a crowd around to make it hard to see everything. I really enjoyed seeing some of the unique Latvian art and the expression shown after occupation. There are several styles and types of art - something for everyone. Another unique part of the museum is the "open" storage area for art not on display. Patrons can see how they are stored and glimpses of pieces to be displayed at some other time. A great visit - give yourself around 1.5 hours (depending on your interests of course). Thanks.
Troy C — Google review
A must see and do when in Riga. We started at the top floor (5) as suggested by a guide… and then walked down the stairs to the next level. Best idea! The diversity of Latvian art is just astounding. Together with the historical context and architecture of the building. It’s a living treasure of Latvia and its artists. The cafe too is definitely worth the visit. If only to break the visit. And then continue as we did to the lower level for the excellent exhibition space
Matt H — Google review
I always visit capital city art galleries around the world. The architecture and building is far more impressive than the art they have displayed on their walls, in my humble opinion. €12 was not worth the visit here. Lots of (in my opinion) not very good (childlike in my view) modern art (notably Dzemme) on the first floor. It may be that I don't find Latvian artists that inspiring, especially modern art artists. The paintings however are well lit. The security team reminded me of the Stazi like security of the Bucharest art gallery, maybe not quite following your every footsteps though. However, if you're expecting the fine art you see in many capital cities around the world, you may be disappointed, as I was. There were a few inspired and talented artistic works on display, but I found the building and history of planning of the gallery more inspiring (on the 4th floor) than most of the works of art. The 5th floor was closed on our visit. There were a few paintings loaned from the Ufitzi in Florence, in the basement, but even then, it's probably the dullest works of art from what I remember of the outstanding Ufitzi. There seemed to be more interesting works in storage (from the limited view) in the basement. Plenty of wall space in the gallery to get these out of storage and on display to the public! Why would you not do this? So if I visit Riga again, I'll admire this building from the outside, but won't pay to get in. If they offer a free entry, I would encourage you to go then and you won't feel as though you've wasted your money! That is unless you like child-like modern art paintings! And lots of unused wall display space, when it could easily be used.

Went on an English language tour of two temporary exhibits with the IWCR women's organization this morning. The guide was excellent, with an in-depth knowledge of the artists and the schools. The exhibits were well laid out with no overcrowding of pieces. The sculpture room with it's dark room was an especially appreciated. It was a great way to view each piece in lighting that highlighted it's particular beauty. I definitely plan on returning to see the permanent exhibits and enjoy the peace and

We didn't expect foreigners can go into the national library! First we went to the Clean bathroom on the B1floor, and then went to the counter at the first floor. All baggage to be put in a locker, but actually you may go in. You can go on the top of the mountain top glass window area and also go strokes around the hall. The five stored books shelf this is very cool. Wish we can go into there - it was locked and you can't go in there. It's worth of sit on those sofas - oh, I really love those and want to take it back with me!!
Mio M — Google review
For a national museum, this one was relatively small. It took me about 3 hours to get through it and I took my time. There were some very nice pieces of art... things that are unique to Latvia and the Baltics. That was great to see. However, I wouldn't go out of my way to see this museum, but if you are in Riga anyway, you should check it out... especially if it's cold or rainy outside. There are many exhibits that are worth seeing. Overall, I would recommend a visit.

Entertaining gallery, well structure exhibits, easy to walk around. There were five floors. The first floor was set aside for special exhibitions. Here are a few painting highlights: • Princess with a Monkey (1913) by Jānis Rozentāls — a provocative piece with layers of meaning. • Madonna with Machine Gun (1932) by Kārlis Padegs — bold, unexpected imagery in Latvian inter-war art. • The White and the Black (1925) by Aleksandra Beļcova — a striking exploration of identity and form. • The Gauja Valley (1891) by Jūlijs Feders — a beautiful landscape that’s also a cultural icon in Latvian art.

The Ethnographic Open-Air Museum of Latvia, located just a short distance from Riga's city center, is a vast outdoor museum set in a forest by Lake Jugla. It boasts an impressive collection of 118 well-preserved historical buildings dating from the 17th to the 20th centuries, representing all four provinces of Latvia. Visitors can explore traditional farmsteads, homes of farmers and craftsmen, and even witness folk artisans demonstrating their crafts during the summer months.
Spent a wonderful day here on the mid summer in Latvia and loved every moment. Set amidst tall pines and a serene lake, the traditional Latvian farmsteads, churches, and windmills transported me back in time. The craftsmanship in each building is simply stunning—so much to admire! I especially enjoyed wandering the quiet forest trails and imagining village life centuries ago. The entire setting felt like a living storybook. The staff were friendly and eager to share insights, which added richness to the experience. A perfect spot to slow down, reconnect with nature, and appreciate Latvia’s cultural roots. Highly recommended!

Great place! Didn't find the cafe, but found the picnic tables and signs pointing to where one probably was - might have been closed after 3pm. Very pretty, scenic, rustic. I can imagine many a mediaeval or period movie might have been filmed here

Wanted to go here ever since we booked a trip to Riga and it didn’t disappoint! Just wow. Stunning scenery, spectacular buildings and an incredible, special, peaceful place. We went on a midweek day when it was fairly quiet, and felt very lucky to experience it in such peace and quiet. Hands down the best thing we did on the trip, and would recommend to anyone. Would love a revisit on the craft weekend!

Peaceful and interesting. Beautiful nature and exhibits. You will need a couple of hours and I would recommend getting there in the morning before it gets too hot. There is a lot of walking but it is mostly flat and accessible. They also had a very welcoming cat near the gift shop.
Aviva Y — Google review
Interesting and educational. The area was quite large with lots to see, so it took a few hours to walk through it all (and my feet were complaining towards the end). Many buildings were closed, but I didn't mind it too much since the weather was good and enough were open to get a sense of the indoors. The forest was beautiful too, and I even found some bilberries! The bus ride from near the city centre took about 40 minutes, but it was worth it.

A very nice museum of an historic Latvian village. The place looks like it was taken from a fairytale. On the entrance you get a map which takes you to visit every part of the village, in each part there is an explanation also in English. There are clean restrooms in few places and a little restaurant in the middle of the village.
Yaron B — Google review
One of the best experiences we had in Riga. It’s a bit outside the city, but there are busses that you can take. It’s well worth your time. Be prepared for a lot of walking. When we visited, the restaurant was not open so I recommend packing a lunch.

I really enjoyed it. The 19th and 20th century village has been preserved. You can get to know the culture of Latvia. Very well maintained. Great nature. And there's a cafe. I recommend for all families with children.

Three Brothers, Latvian Museum of Architecture

Mentioned on
+13 other lists
The Three Brothers, located on Maza Pils street in Old Riga, is a trio of iconic medieval dwellings that form the city's oldest complex of houses. These buildings now house the Latvian Museum of Architecture and showcase different architectural styles from various periods. The oldest building, dating back to the 15th century, features Gothic and Renaissance elements, while its neighboring house displays Dutch Mannerist influence. The third house exemplifies Baroque architecture from the 17th century.
Beautiful place with a nice history behind one of the must go place in Riga. Interesting to stay, to learn and appreciate the local history and secrets. Reserve at least 2 hours to be able to see everything and take nice pictures.
Wislan N — Google review
The Three Brothers are the oldest residential houses in Riga and a fascinating glimpse into the city’s architectural history. Located in the Old Town, these three adjoining buildings each represent a different period and style, telling the story of Riga’s development over the centuries. The oldest “brother” (No. 17) dates back to the late 15th century and is built in late Gothic style, with a narrow façade and stepped gable, reflecting medieval merchant life. The middle “brother” (No. 19) was constructed in 1646 in Dutch Renaissance style, with ornate decorations and larger windows, showing the influence of Western Europe. The youngest “brother” (No. 21) is from the 17th century as well, simpler in design but harmonizing beautifully with the others. According to legend, the houses were built by three men from the same family—hence the name “Three Brothers.” Today, they host the Latvian Museum of Architecture and are a must-see for anyone interested in history, culture, and beautiful old buildings. ⭐ Tip: Visit early in the day for fewer crowds, and take a moment to notice the little details carved into the façades

The Three Brothers in Riga is a complex of three houses, built between 15th and 17th century. The oldest one built in the 15th century, is one of the oldest stone-built houses in Riga. The three buildings have different architectural style. It's part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Riga's Old Town. Found it very interesting.

Nestled in the heart of Riga, the Riga Nativity of Christ Orthodox Cathedral stands as a magnificent testament to 19th-century architecture. With its striking golden domes and intricate interior design, this cathedral is not only the largest Orthodox church in Latvia but also a symbol of resilience.
The Riga Orthodox Cathedral (also known as the Nativity of Christ Cathedral) is an impressive Eastern Orthodox church located in the city center. Built in the early 20th century, it features stunning Byzantine-style architecture with beautiful golden domes and intricate mosaics inside. The cathedral’s peaceful atmosphere makes it a great place for reflection, and its ornate interior, complete with colorful icons and frescoes, is definitely worth exploring. While it serves as a functioning church, it’s also open to visitors and offers insight into Riga’s religious and cultural heritage.

The Nativity of Christ Orthodox Cathedral in Riga is a breathtaking place of worship. Its golden domes shine above the city, while inside, intricate details, soft light, and rich colours create a serene and awe-inspiring atmosphere. A must-visit for anyone exploring Riga’s cultural and architectural heritage. Remember no shorts and hats.

The Riga Nativity of Christ is one of most magnificent Cathedrals ever visited. It's the largest Orthodox church in Riga. It stands out because of the architecture, beautiful decorated light yellow exterior, with five prominent golden domes that are visible from a long distance. The interior is very richly decorated. There is a park surrounding the Cathedral. It's location is very central, can easily walk from anywhere in Riga city.
Soudamini M — Google review
This is definitely one of the most beautiful places, I have seen here in Riga. It is hard to believe that the Soviets closed it down, but ode to the Latvian government, when they handed it back to the Russian Orthodox Community after the independence. You can enter for free, but you have to have your head covered with a scarf or the like. It is not allowed to take pictures inside, so you have a lot of time to enjoy the decorations and domes and the detailed religious symbols inside. It really took me by surprise. I can highly recommend the cathedral! Totally amazing and astunning place.
Linda B — Google review
It's empressive... and pictures do not do it justice. Orthodox churches tend to be ornate... and this one was more ornate than others I've seen. I wouldn't go out of my way to visit this church, but if you have the opportunity, I would definitely recommend a visit.
Paul C — Google review
A great edition of the Orthodox Church in Riga. Unfortunately for me, it was locked when we wanted to visit so we were unable to see the inside. She is beautiful on the outside. If I have the opportunity to come to Riga again, it's on my wish list.
King S — Google review
The working ladies inside are completely rude and disrespectful. They are going even to interrupt your prayer. They don't have any religiosity inside of them. Don't waste your time and peace dealing with them; they don't deserve it. The cathedral is more peaceful and beautiful from outside.
Thais C — Google review
Awesome looking church. Inside is very humble and prayerful.

Located in the historic Jacobs Barracks, 3 pavāru restorāns "Tam labam būs augt" is a popular dining spot in Riga. The restaurant, created by three local chefs, offers a contemporary atmosphere and creative menu. Diners can enjoy dishes like ostrich tartar and unique bread presentations. The interior adds a modern touch to the 18th-century building, and guests can watch their meals being prepared in the open kitchen.
An unforgettable evening for our entire team! We hosted a business dinner with over 50 guests, and the experience was absolutely superb. Every single person enjoyed an exceptional culinary journey that exceeded expectations. The passion and attention to detail in each dish—and the quality of the ingredients—were evident in every bite. The professionalism and efficiency of the staff were outstanding, making the entire evening run smoothly and feel truly special. A heartfelt thank you for giving us an experience to remember. Highly recommended for both personal and corporate events!

We had the tasting menu together with the non-alcoholic beverage selection. Everything was excellent – fresh, creative, and perfectly prepared. The service was very friendly, attentive, and explained the menu in detail, which made the experience even more enjoyable. The restaurant itself has a very nice atmosphere and is tastefully decorated, which makes the whole evening feel even more special. A great place in Riga for a memorable dining experience.

A highlight during my time at Riga. I was lucky enough to score a reservation and had a very early dinner. The space was charming with different sections, food has a modern twist to it (e.g., fish soup had notes of lemongrass to give it that freshness). Loved the layering of flavours and the playful aspect when eating bread. Highly recommend.

Visited in Sep 2025 3 Pavaru Restorans is a top restaurant to visit in Riga as per multiple online lists. It was also recommended to visit by one of my tour guides. Therefore I made a dinner reservation here during my recent visit to Riga. There is an a-la-carte and tasting menu here. We went with the tasting menu as it seemed a very good option to try out the various dishes the restaurant has to offer. There are a couple of complimentary amuse bouche courses before the 6-course tasting menu starts. There was also an extra palate cleanser course before the 2 main courses. Among the tasting menu items, my favourite items were the scallop and lamb courses. Service was fine. For drinks, we just ordered a couple of a-la-carte drinks from the drinks menu. For those interested, there is an alcoholic and non-alcoholic pairing available with the tasting menu too. In summary, this was a good dining experience. If you are spending 3-4 nights in Riga, this is a good place to choose for dinner during one of the days.

Wow! What a fantastic restaurant! Put this on your Riga ‘must visit’ list. This is a special occasion, rather than an everyday place but as a treat, it’s reasonably priced. The food was exceptional, with a wonderful surprise to start with off a sheet of different homemade sauces and gorgeous homemade bread to dip in. The service was absolutely top notch - thoughtful but not at all fussy. Great vegan options! (Photos show the artistic sauces and my starter. Forgot to take a pick of my main).

Latvian famous restaurant chain, it is a must do when visiting Riga. The food is ok, don’t expect 5 stars meal. It’s an affordable self restaurant place and the food is good for canteen style place! Pleasant experience

If you love noisy organized chaos and endless choices of food, snacks, desserts and drinks then Lido is your place but not for those of us suffering badly from gluten sensitivities. Of course there are gluten-free options but the information you have to check it carefully yourself and the contamination risk is very high if you're extremely sensitive to gluten. I settled for a glass of gluten free strawberry mousse in vanilla sauce which was absolutely delicious and filling, worth a revisit as well. The place is large, huge, a really vast area with different kitchens and menues. The building is divided into many different sections and the patios in a variety of many brightly decorated exteriors, similar to an amusement park. Lido is also easily accessible by public transportations from Riga city center. Very easy to get there by any bus or trams.

Well worth visiting for the food alone. I was there "between the seasons" so not all the bells and whistles going on in the yard theam park. The food is good and so plentiful. The self service almost make it hard to choose among so many dishes. Suitable for all ages.

We had an amazing night at Vincents in Riga. Absolutely worth it. This place could easily have one Michelin star, but compared to Danish or Catalonian Michelin-restaurants, Vincent is half price. Great food, wine and service. I'll have to come back some day.

Our experience at Vincents was amazing. We had their signature menu, and enjoyed lovely and surprising food and wine. Considering the long menu, there were only minor things to comment on the food. Additionally the staff and their hospitality was exceptional and one of the best I have meet at a restaurant, as they included fun stories, great introductions and smiles when serving our courses.

This is the best restaurant in Rīga by far. The food was so good, well balanced and so much fun they had with the food. If Michelin was a thing in the Baltic this food and service is worthy. If you have the time, money its a no brainier. Go to this beautiful place.

Fine dining all the way to the prices. It was a solid experience but the quality and innovation cannot really justify the price. I’m giving 4 stars for the visit but I wouldn’t recommend to a friend. You get same or better with lower prices in other restaurants.

As a bit of a birthday treat booked into the #1 rated restaurant in Riga. Went for the tasting menu for which i had very high expectations... the food was just OKAY in my opinion. Tasty, carefully selected ingredients and beautifully presented. But it's food and taste is king...besides the scallops (and my pink madame cocktail) the food here didn't excite my palate. The ends of my pork was chewy/slighy tough, the languistine was meh...And the tasting menu IMO is NOT good value for money fine dining or not. I very much doubt the top chef was in the kitchen 13th of November. Good service and nice ambience...but i had more exciting/delish food at Petergailis the next day for a fraction of the cost.

Tails is renowned for its specialty in dry-aging fish, enhancing texture and flavor depth through aging from several days to weeks.
Just amazing. We had three courses and they were all fantastic. The grilled octopus war very tender and the entire dish was great. We had a special desert (basil mouse with strawberry sorbet). I wish that they would add it to the regular menu. The service was really friendly, made recommendations and gave information about the dishes. The restaurant was an amazing atmosphere and the interior is beautiful. If I had one critic: They should change the paper napkins to cloth napkins. They would fit the style of the restaurant better.

The appetizers were a hit, with nicely portioned and seasoned. However, the entrees were mostly misses. We ordered their special lobster roll, which had barely any lobster. It was priced at 30+ euros, which is a lot, and we expected at least two lobster tails, not just one. The risotto had an interesting flavor, slightly sour because they used seaweed as the base, but the seaweed tasted pickled, releasing that sourness into the dish. The combo was not tasteful. The beef was probably the best entree, but unfortunately, the size was just too small for what it was. Overall, it was good, but not great.

Visited in Sep 2025 The dinner at Tails was undoubtedly my best meal in Riga during my visit to the city. Located near the beautiful Art Noveau neighbourhood of Riga, Tails is a wonderful restaurant specialising in fish preparations. I found out about the restaurant via the Michelin guide and made a reservation. There was an a-la-carte menu as well as a tasting menu. I went with the tasting menu which comprised 10-11 courses. One of the very interesting starting courses was the bread which was kind of made in front of me. There were some very interesting and delightful courses like the beaver meat, the eel and the sturgeon fish, all of which I loved. The other main course of the short ribs was also delicious. The “chaga” dessert course was also wonderfully unique. Service was fantastic and the restaurant staff did an excellent job in explaining the different courses. For drinks there was a cocktail and mocktail menu. I ordered a couple of cocktails and they were quite nice. All in all, I would 200% recommend visiting this restaurant if you’re in Riga. Tails is doing a wonderful job and I thoroughly enjoyed my dining experience here.

We saw this on YouTube the week before we came to Riga. It sounded so unique, we needed to try. Got ourselves a late lunch after the KGB museum. We started off with 3 mains to share, but then had to get a fourth as we thought the first 3 dishes were so good. The waiters were great and they were very attentive. Definitely worth the visit. —- We had to go back again the next day to try the other dishes. Today, we tried the seafood tartar. The air dried fish gives the seafood stronger flavours as well as a firmer texture. We tried the halibut and the turbot. We were surprised that they offered the 300g turbot as a whole fish. Thought the fishermen might have let the smaller fish back in the sea for them to grow. (Apparently not.) Both fish had a firm flesh and the taste is “sweet”.

It is worth a visit. I tried the degustation menu and was quite impressed by the presentation and taste. Not all dishes were to my liking 100% but that is a matter of personal taste. The quantity is more than enough. Wine and drinks selection is good as well. Some of the staff are very friendly and talkative, others not so much.

Tails in Riga delivers an exceptional dining experience that goes far beyond expectations. The chef has truly discovered his voice through the tasting menu, crafting a culinary narrative that feels both deeply personal and refreshingly innovative. Each course reflects a modern interpretation of Latvian cuisine, blending local ingredients and traditions with a striking sense of creativity and precision. Seated at the bar, the experience becomes wonderfully intimate you’re not just a guest but part of the performance, observing the artistry and rhythm of the kitchen up close. It’s an engaging perspective that highlights the passion, skill, and care behind every plate. From start to finish, Tails embodies the spirit of contemporary Latvian gastronomy with confidence and flair. It stands, without question, as one of the finest culinary experiences in this part of Europe. PS: no photos of the food are added as everybody has to experience this themselves.

What a fantastic spot! All the great reviews are absolutely right — so glad we came. If you love foie gras, game meat, or beautifully crafted cocktails, this place is a must. Even if you’re just after a great steak, you’ll be happy here. The food is top quality, prepared with care, and the service is outstanding — friendly, warm, and professional. I loved the wild pigeon with foie gras, my husband was blown away by the wild deer, and the monkfish with bisque was amazing too. The foie gras dish alone is worth the visit! Cocktails are excellent — try the “Sip of Italy” — and the wine list is spot on. Dessert was lovely, though I was pretty full by then :) Wish we’d found this place earlier. Excellent choice of meat in a fancy ambiente. We enjoyed the quality food and the drinks and had a chilled evening with our children. The price tag is a bit (too) high - roughly 50 Eur for a piece of meat without sides can be found cheaper for equal quality. Service was friendly and attentive.

Unfortunately it's below average, the waiter was below average, the meat quality is below average, I guess the Chef as well, I ordered a medium steak it was well done, the taste isn't good either, we ordered the pigeon well done and it was rare, no complimente nothing. There are much better places in Riga especially for steaks. The starters we're good. But overall experience was not good for that price category. Go to Steaks i.e. if you want to eat a good one.

Rozengrāls, a captivating medieval-themed restaurant nestled in the heart of Riga's Old Town, offers diners an enchanting journey back to the 13th century. Housed within a fragment of the ancient city wall dating back to 1201, this unique eatery boasts rustic decor and staff dressed as knights, creating an immersive atmosphere.
This place was very cool! We were a group of 3 and got seated right away. Each dish had its own story for where it came from, and the ambiance with real candles and medieval decorations was super nice. Even the waiters and waitresses were dressed in old-time clothes. The kvass was sweet and DELICIOUS. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the french onion soup. It wasn't like your typical french onion soup you get today since it's based on the historical recipe, but it was very delicious. It was also on a cool, real metal cauldron. The pork shank was good, but we have had better. If you like pumpkin, the puff pastry with pumpkin and green beans was good, especially the white sauce it came with. Just note: the portions ARE BIG. For 3 people we finished 2 soups but struggled finishing the puff pastry and shank. Highly recommend!

Highly recommend to anyone looking for something special and unforgettable! 🌟

Very luxurious and posh, but authentic place. The waiters and the entire staff are dressed in medieval clothes. The whole atmosphere corresponds to that age. The menu includes dishes prepared according to ancient recipes, as well as salads for those who eat little :) I recommend sharing some dishes with several people - the portions are sufficient. It is worth visiting just for the atmosphere and be sure to order at least one authentic dish. It seems like you have entered a museum :)

Visited in Sep 2025 Rozengrals is one of the most famous restaurants in Riga and decided to pay a visit for dinner during my trip to Riga. The restaurant is very conveniently located in the Old Town. The restaurant has a very medieval cellar type of feel, and as a result offers a very unique ambience for a dining experience. Almost felt like I am having dinner in one those tavern they showed in Game of Thrones 🙂 The food menu has quite a few item to choose from. We didn’t order any starters or snacks, and just ordered 2 mains (the catfish filet and the rabbit meat stew). The portion sizes were more than decent and us 2 pax weren’t able to finish the 2 dishes in entirety. For dessert, we ordered the sea buckthorn and quince cake which was really good. For drinks, we ordered a couple of beers. Their regular draft beer is quite nice. Service was ok, a bit on the slower side but that’s understandable as the restaurant can get quite crowded. I had made a reservation from beforehand (by calling them), and would recommend making a reservation due to the popularity of this place. Overall, it was a decent dinner. It wasn’t the best food I had in Riga but it was definitely one of the better overall experiences given the ambience and decor of the place. Just because of its unique environment, I’d definitely recommend folks visiting Riga to have a meal (lunch or dinner) at Rozengrals.

I felt transported back in time to the Middle Ages. What a brilliant idea for an experience not just a restaurant. The moment you walk down the stairs, it felt eerie like stepping back in time. The live music enhanced the atmosphere, they were brilliant. The food was tasty and big portions as well. Definitely worth a visit.
Mashinka555 — Google review
The dish was generous, mostly thanks to the sides, and overall quite tasty. The atmosphere of Rozengrāls is fantastic, you really feel like you’ve stepped into a medieval tavern, with the setting and even the waiters dressed in period style. Worth visiting even if you don't want to eat, just take a look
Galindo — Google review
It was good experience to feel some authentic atmosphere and food of old districts in Riga. But I don’t recommend this place if you are finding somewhere to enjoy lunch alone. They served huge amount of dishes, it was hard to find something for 1 person. Maybe better with friends or family here..
Jamie Y — Google review
Wow.. worth the stop, very cool underground labyrinth with many rooms and even a small bar to sit at if you just want the experience with a drink. Make sure to get the French onion soup, it is nothing like the French onion soup you know. Very tasty. If you have kids this is a must stop. We did not make a reservation and got right in. We would go here again.

Ala Pagrabs is a popular underground tavern in Riga's Old Town, offering a wide selection of Latvian beers, contemporary local cuisine, and live music. This subterranean hangout is housed in an ancient wine cellar and is beloved by both locals and tourists. The venue stays open until 6am, making it a great spot for dinner and late-night drinks.
One of the best restaurants I have been to! The mood there is cool, each meal we tasted was delicious! The alcohol free beer is the best I have had in my life. Definitely a must to be place during your visit in Riga.

Visited in Sep 2025 Folkklubs Ala Pagrabs was recommended to us as the most popular bar amongst locals. Therefore decided to pay a visit after dinner. Conveniently located in the old town of Riga, this watering hole is a truly happening place. We tried a few Latvian beers which were quite good. Didn’t try any food as we visited the place after dinner, but there is a proper food menu for those wanting to visit this place for food & drinks. You should surely try the local Latvian beers available on tap here. I would definitely recommend visiting this local watering hole if you want to experience a local bar scene and want to try some proper Latvian beers.

We had such a great time that we went back twice. It was full both times so we ended up at the bar but we had a great time there. They do have great garlic bread but the meal servings are so large that it might be a mistake to order it too. All the food we had was really good, and we tried a huge variety of drinks: the lager tasting flight, hot Riga black balsam in red currant juice (the way to do it), the local moonshine (infused liquor), the burning beer (very good for sipping!), a local cider, and an anise-flavored liquor that was very sweet. Our bartender, Laura, gave a ton of context and suggestions and we were lucky to run into her both times. There was also live music and the atmosphere was great. Great place to eat and hang out for a while. Prepare to be flexible if you don’t make a reservation. It got pretty noisy on Saturday night but not to a bad level.

This place was recommended by our local tour guide. We had an absolutely wonderful experience at this restaurant. I ordered the grilled pork ribs in beer marinate and it was hands down one of the best dish I’ve ever had. The meat was fall-off-the-bone tender and melted in my mouth. Also our waitress recommended the traditional battered chicken fillet folk club style, which was creamy and juicy inside. We loved their ginger beer (ingwer beer). It was refreshing and a perfect pairing either way our meals. The waitress was incredibly attentive, friendly and made us feel genuinely welcomed. Highly recommend!

Love this place. Must visit if you in Riga. Authentic place with amazing food and service! Located in seller with plenty of space, better to book for dinner especially for weekend, but u may be in luck for free table and always can pop in for drink. Recommended!

Ribs were 10/10, best ribs I’ve ever tried Vibe and service was great. From Wednesday till Sunday they have live music and Latvian shows. Definitely a good place to try. Better to reserve as it gets very busy.

Amazing place. A must visit when you come to Riga. We were lucky - that evening there was a live band concert - the performers are unreal, exciting and do not let you be sad. Great place, easy to find, right in the old town. I recommend booking a table during an event - a place to sit is guaranteed. The waiters are nice and helpful, fast. The menu has a large selection - both food and drinks. We tasted everything and shared dishes. The portions are large in my opinion. The food is very, very tasty.

Restaurant
Kolonade is a renowned restaurant in Riga, Latvia, offering a blend of traditional and modern cuisine. Housed in a historic building near iconic landmarks like the Freedom Monument and Opera House, it aims to showcase Latvia's culinary heritage through its dishes. The restaurant's talented kitchen team skillfully transforms fresh local produce into visually appealing meals. While some dishes may occasionally fall short, overall the dining experience is quite successful.
Very nice restaurant in the centre of Riga. Offers beautiful and uniquely crafted dishes. Foods were surprising in their appearance, tasted like nothing else I tried before. Wine selection was decent, but I went with a simpler option, it was very nice. Enjoyed every meal I had there (goat cheese, fried octopus, tuna steak, fig cake). Lovely staff, when you enter they take your coats and hang them. When you leave, they help you put on the coat - I found it very nice! The waiters explain everything and are friendly, if you need suggestion on wines - they have an on-site wine expert to assist you. I was very pleased with my time there, would 100% recommend. P.S. fig cheesecake is TO DIE FOR 😍

This restaurant is located perfectly between the old town (historical) and the new part of town. The entire place has a great feel. Even when you are inside it feels like you are sitting outside due to massive windows. The place is decorated beautifully. My server was this young Latvian man who was very polite and informative with a great sense of humor. The food was simply delicious. Well cooked meal and fresh salad with a great glass of wine. I highly recommend Kolonade if you happen to be in Riga!

Mixed Experience During a Special Birthday Dinner I visited Kolonāde during Restaurant Week in Riga for a special birthday dinner, which I had informed the restaurant about in advance. I even mentioned that I wouldn’t mind any additional cost for making it a special occasion. Upon arrival, we received a warm and pleasant welcome, setting high expectations for the evening. After selecting our dishes, we ordered drinks — I chose a wine pairing for each course, while my companion ordered a few drinks, of which only one was served. The complimentary amuse-bouche was tasty, and the duck terrine was superb — beautifully executed and full of flavor. Unfortunately, the cabbage rolls with Greenland prawns were a real disappointment. The prawns were tough and overcooked, which was surprising and disheartening given the restaurant’s fine-dining reputation. When dessert arrived, I expected a small gesture such as a candle or sparkler to mark the birthday — especially since I had mentioned the occasion ahead of time — but there was nothing special added. Finally, when paying, I politely asked to round up the amount to include the tip, but that request was overlooked, which left a slightly awkward impression at the end of the evening. Overall, if the missing drink had been served, the prawns cooked properly, and a small birthday touch acknowledged, this would have easily been a 5-star experience. The atmosphere and parts of the meal were excellent, but the missed details made the evening fall short of expectations.

Splendid dinner at Kolonade! Joined colleagues from around the world for a nice dinner in Riga, Latvia. This restaurant is ideal with its beautiful views of the park and optional open windows. Fantastic (and awarded) wine list. We enjoyed a couple bottles of beautiful premier cru Chardonnay. The food was wonderful as well, including the smoked rosemary and chili shrimp, seared tuna, and chocolate tart. Excellent atmosphere and friendly service to boot. Highly recommend!

Chef Zommers showcases his culinary finesse by creating modern dishes using premium local and seasonal ingredients prepared with artistic flair.
What a lovely experience. This wasn't just a meal, it was a journey through flavour, with the help of our knowledgeable & attentive waiter. Delicious food and perfectly matched wine. Thank you so much.

At first the waiting times were quite long, but it didn't bother me too much. Our waitress was great and the food even better. We had the cheaper wines to go with the menu and I enjoyed them very much.
Viivi V — Google review
It was our first night in Riga and we walked from our hotel for about 15 mins. The restaurant was booked inside, but we were in the bar area. We actually quite enjoyed that space. The waiting staff were friendly and explained the dishes. We went with the tasting menu. The food was very pretty and we got 2 starters and 2 mains. I have to agree with some of the other comments. The starters came out quickly, but the mains took some time. We did get some very clever flavours and things that make you think about what is it that you are eating. There is no doubt that it was expensive. We would still recommend you to give it a try.
Dennis T — Google review
I tried the new menu on the first day of opening. The kitchen was a little slow, since it was both the first day with a new menu and they were handling a large group. That being said, all the dishes were excellent. The new wine pairings complemented the food well. There’s always room for improvement, but I definitely recommend this place—especially if you’re focused on the food. The tasting dinner costs only €65 per person, which is a steal for the quality you get.
Tomas Č — Google review
Entresol is totally worth it! 5 courses for 55 euros, all of which were above average, along with a couple of standouts. If Michelin came to Riga, Entresol would absolutely have a shot at a star. Not everything might look super polished/refined, but the flavor of the dishes makes up for that (and flavor is what ultimately matters). Also big points for super kind/friendly service. Definitely worth it for a night out without overly breaking the bank.

Great dinner and excellent service!
Mari L — Google review
Totally ok food, great service but lacks that final piece of the puzzle to get there. All dishes looked good but not everything tasted that terrific. We had a 5-course tasting meny with a wine pairing which should come in at approximately €70 per person. We ended up with a tab that said over €110 per person not having taken into account some other charges, including their self-charged "tip" and the €60 they charged us for water. I wouldn't recommend this place for its tasting menu, that is for sure.
Foodo H — Google review
A pleasant 2.5h dinner, with interesting flavors and high quality ingredients. Dishes were prepared w love and care. Great service as well! You would have to make reservations before going. No menu can be chosen but the five courses for 45e per pax

In the heart of Old Town Riga, Kalku Varti is a popular restaurant known for its delicious cuisine and modern decor with nods to Latvian traditions. The restaurant offers a courtyard terrace where guests can dine surrounded by ancient stone walls during the summer months. Specializing in Latvian cuisine, Kalku Varti puts a contemporary twist on traditional dishes using seasonal local ingredients.
We went there along with the locals. So I believe this is popular among the locals and possibly serves authentic local cuisine. The food options were great and so was the taste. Staff were very polite and overall a warm feeling. I would recommend this place for visitors. I assume reservation is mandatory here.
GV V — Google review
We were looking forward to our dining experience at Kalku Varti after it had been recommended by some locals. Upon arriving the friendly server greeted us and sat us immediately. The restaurant is very homey and comfortable with a lovely outdoor seating area in the back. Perfect for a romantic evening. Looking over the tasty sounding items my partner chose the grilled chicken breast with bok choy. I chose the beef cheeks with roasted vegetables. From there plentiful wine list we chose a wine that would go with both entrees. My beef cheeks were tender and would have been very good but the chef had put a thick brown gravy over the tender beef which took away any of the flavor the dish would have had. The roasted vegetables were prepared nicely but, again, the gravy, which seemed like it came out of a package, hid all the freshness and flavor of this locally sourced produce. My wife's experience was not any better. Her chicken was dry although she said it had a nice herbal flavor. The bok choy was hard as a rock and inedible. By the time we tracked down our waiter, we did not want to wait around for something different. Kalku Vardi did comp us a delicious desert. We have read so many positive reviews, we will give Kalku Varti another visit on our return to Riga.
Kevin S — Google review
The food is relatively delicious, but the service was quite slow. For example, we waited 50 minutes for our main course, which is why I’m giving this rating.

Tres chic restaurant — very stylish and elegant, though I personally like eating a bit more like a savage 😄🍴. Started with gazpacho soup, paired with a variety of good breads. The beef burger was juicy and delicious, and the homemade fried potatoes were a real treat (not easy to find everywhere!). Paired it with Spanish homemade wine — solid choice. Finished with avocado panna cotta, light and not overly sweet — a refreshing ending. Chic vibes, tasty food, worth a visit!
Serter Y — Google review
Very good restaurant because of atmosphere and service. Food is tasty and mostly made from local ingredients, maybe a little lacking in sophistication and flavor nuances, but still very good. Local made bread rolls is what the kids love the most.
Juris M — Google review
Excellent food and service. Vegetarian and fish wonderful. They also serve plenty of meat but I can't vouch for that. The dishes were all beautifully presented and the food was so fresh and seasonal. Unfortunately no pictures of starters - ate them before we had chance - they were awesome! Tomato stuffed with herby burrata and a salad with strawberries an walnut - I wouldn't have put these flavours together but they were amazing. Marked atmosphere down, I'm sure it could have been amazing however at evening dinner service the table next to us had an unruly toddler and screaming baby and there seemed to be gaggles of teenagers wandering in and out and hanging around the bar - more like a kids club than gourmet restaurant.

Transportation in Riga

Getting around Riga can be a little daunting if you’re new here. We can help list some of the major public transportation methods if you don’t want to rely on a car.

Riga Airport

International airport
Airport
Domestic airport
Riga Airport, also known as Riga International Airport (RIX), consists of two terminals serving non-Schengen countries and one terminal for fellow EU states. The airport offers modern facilities with a variety of food options and convenient public transport connections to the city center, such as bus 22 or minibus 222. Travelers can easily access the airport by car, taxi, or bus, and enjoy amenities like ample restrooms, water refill stations, shops, and dining options.
This tiny but very clean, cute and efficient airport 20 minutes away from the center of Riga (old town) serves as a hub for Air Baltic airline. Every single person I encountered at this airport spoke perfect English. Duty free stores had great deals! If you need a taxi in the airport, do yourself a favor and download Bolt app. With Bolt, taxi from the airport to Riga City Center would run you around 10 euros but if you get a taxi at the airport, you are on the hook for at least 65-70. No lines and no nonsense airport. What a pleasant suprise❤️

Riga Airport may be small, but it is very well organized and easy to use. The atmosphere is calm, and moving through security and check-in is quick and hassle-free. Facilities are clean, staff are generally helpful, and the layout makes it simple to find your way around. Overall, it offers a smooth and pleasant travel experience compared to many larger airports.
Honest V — Google review
Riga Airport is modern, efficient, and well-organized, making travel smooth and pleasant. It offers a good selection of shops, cafes, and free Wi-Fi throughout the terminal. One of its great advantages is easy access from the city center via bus No. 22. The ticket costs only €1.50 if bought in advance from kiosks or stores. Note: Tickets are not sold on the bus, so make sure to purchase them beforehand.
Khalil B — Google review
The best airport I’ve ever been to. Very quick and efficient. No lines for passport control or security. Very modern and easy to navigate. Lots of seating and various water refill stations throughout the airport.

Riga Airport Transit Experience: A Long Layover Made Comfortable I recently had a 16-hour layover at Riga International Airport (RIX), and overall, it was a surprisingly comfortable experience, largely thanks to Club Kepler. For €40 for 12 hours, Club Kepler offered a much-needed sanctuary during my long transit. It was a great option to relax and recharge. The facilities within the club were excellent, providing a quiet and comfortable space away from the main terminal bustle. One particularly pleasant surprise was the Duty-Free shop located near Club Kepler. The staff there were incredibly polite and helpful, which made my shopping experience very enjoyable. What truly stood out was their multilingual ability – the staff I interacted with spoke Russian and English fluently, and potentially other languages too. This made communication effortless and added to the positive impression. While a 16-hour layover is never ideal, Riga Airport, with the availability of Club Kepler and the friendly service in the duty-free area, certainly made it as pleasant as possible.

I never knew I was a small airport girl, but I guess I am. What I love about this airport is that it’s calm, there aren’t as many flights as let’s say Antalya airport, RIX is very modern and clean, there are amazing shops, expensive, typical for airports. It’s very easy to get around this airport. There are also a lot of windows, through them you can look at planes taking off, and landing. The staff, they aren’t too nice, but they aren’t rude. Just doing their job. I would like if there were more bridges, because some ways of entering the plane are a bit weird, for instance you walk down the stairs out the airport, then climb the stairs into another section, and then there’s a tunnel that leads to the aircraft. Overall this is an amazing small, cozy airport!💗
Livija P — Google review
A good size airport with all the amenities & a high standard of hygiene. The duty free is diverse with the most expenses fridge magnets I have ever encountered. Went through security & passport control quickly & smoothly at departures unfortunately this was not the case at arrivals where the staff were rude, unfriendly & waiting time was unbearable. Dommage!
Fanina T — Google review
Smooth experience overall. Security and passport control were efficient, and the airport is clean and modern. A few more dining options would make it even better.
