Mifuneyama Rakuen

Garden
Nature & Parks
Mifuneyama Rakuen is a stunning Japanese garden located at the foot of Mt. Mifune in Saga prefecture, covering an expansive area of 500,000 square meters. Originally built as a villa for the feudal lord of Takeo area in 1845, it has since become open to the public and is renowned for its picturesque beauty. The garden features a teahouse and statues depicting the 500 disciples of Buddha, creating a serene and culturally rich atmosphere.
Awesome ticketed park to visit during Autumn Leaves Festival. Fall scenery is picturesque and Instagram picture perfect. Like taking a page out of a beautifully painted painting with rich and vibrant colours that entices your eyes & brain. Basically two routes to take one within half hour and another about 40 minutes. The later is much more beautiful with upward slope climb, while it would be quite challenging for elderly and young kids. There are tea house and restaurant location within the park if you fancy it. This is definitely a park to come to to spend 1-2hrs, with history of emperor’s favourite place he visit, wonderful vibrant red, yellow & green mixture that blow your mind away.

There are almost no reviews about the team labs part of this hotel. I’m here to change that. This destination was on my want to go ever since I went to TeamLabs PLANETS in Tokyo. We walked into the hotel and were blown away by the stunning art pieces. We enjoyed delicious complimentary welcome drinks under the lanterns. Then, we began to explore the art pieces in the ruined parts of the hotel. Many don’t understand that the ruined parts of the hotel are not under construction, they are remnants of an old onsen that was operational in the 60s and the 70s. It’s not under construction, it was internationally left to ruin. That’s why the teamlabs art pieces play with that, leaving an interesting vibe, new art pieces interacting with the old ruins. This made for an otherworldly, albeit beautiful vibe, reminiscent of a post apocalyptic kind of feeling. The onsen itself was spectacular. It was absolutely stunning, with fireplace rooms with snacks, multiple hot pools and cold plunge pools, and various steam rooms and saunas. You are missing out if you go. The architecture is Scandinavian inspired, with beautiful, big windows in an open garden. And finally, the teamlabs park itself: we went at night, and the details were stunning. I was transported to another world, where azalea bushes glowed like ocean waves, and where digital koi swam in a giant pond.
Stacy B — Google review
Mifuneyama Rakuen, a renowned 500,000-square-meter Japanese garden at the base of Mount Mifune in Takeo, Saga Prefecture, offers stunning seasonal vistas, including vibrant spring blooms and autumn foliage. However, the site’s appeal is tempered by evident maintenance shortcomings, such as unchecked overgrowth of creeping vines on mature trees and other unmanaged vegetation, which detract from its pristine aesthetic. Visitors are advised to plan accordingly, prioritizing peak seasons for optimal enjoyment.
J P — Google review
Pleasant garden grounds, featuring a quaint bit murky pond, plus a grand mountain face overseeing proceedings within the garden below. Team Lab collaboration currently on, but only seems to be at night, and even the day time exhibition in the bathhouse ruins was closed. There’s a significant walk to a sacred tree on the east side, with the forest path being pretty narrow and somewhat insecure in places, all to end in not very much.
Jason C — Google review
I had a great stay! Beware that if you book a room with a private hot spring, there is a chance you'll have to deal with bugs. Staff were really nice. Food was really good. The hot spring is amazing. Also, you can visit both the hot springs and teamlab for free if you're a hotel guest.
Ellen — Google review
We have been there by night. Very beatiful walk through the iluminated garden.
Arye S — Google review
The Teamlabs event here was next level awesome. Hope it comes back!
Mark C — Google review
A beautiful garden full of seasonal flowers. We visited during cherry blossom season, but before full bloom. I felt it really came alive at night with the illuminations. There is also a teamLab exhibition tucked in the hillside that connects with a hotel there. The art is beautiful and worth seeing if you enjoy other similar exhibitions. At first I was shocked that the building seemed so dirty, but it's supposed to be a Ruins exhibition. Also, it's on the smaller side, but I felt the price reflected that. Probably easiest access by car, but there was free parking. I would love to come back and see the azaleas in full bloom, the photos look beautiful.

Takeo city Library

Public library
Library
Museum
Takeo City Library is a popular tourist spot in Takeo City, known for its modern building and unique features. The library underwent a major renovation in 2013 and now houses a Tsutaya bookstore and even a Starbucks, making it stand out from traditional libraries. Visitors have described the space as more akin to a large bookstore rather than a typical public library. It has been recognized as one of the most beautiful libraries globally, featuring an iconic elongated curved bookshelf on the second floor.
The building is magnificent and the interior is comforting. You can order a Starbucks coffee plus cake, and then enjoy yourself in reading. The atmosphere here is warm and quiet, very Japanese style. If you stay in the city for a day or two, you can take a morning walk to here and the nearby shrine, and enjoy a great me-time here.
Chih-ming H — Google review
Strong recommend for those who love to read! This library combines with cafe, the design is new and it is open for public. I really love the children reading area which is located beside this library. The photo spot is good to have an overview of this library.
Luisa L — Google review
A key landmark at Takeo. Nice architecture with a main library and a kids library by the side. Night time is even better with lights on. 2nd floor and part of ground floor are library area. They do have cafe (Starbucks) and some books/magazines/souvenirs (Tsutaya) on the ground floor. There are only two spots in the library where you can take photos in order not to disturb others, so pls keep in mind.
Esther C — Google review
Very beautiful library. I visited during spring but the building a bit warm and heated. Worth to stop a few hours on the route to Nagasaki from Fukuoka. There is another cute kid library next door. Can visit nearby shrine.
Ai — Google review
I’ve never had a library on my to do list on any free weekend but the Takeo library found it’s way on there last month. First off, what really allured me into going there was air conditioning. Yep, if you haven’t spent a summer in Kyushu then you haven’t felt real heat and humidity…seriously worse than the swamps of Florida or the stickiness of Singapore. The kind of heat you just know is disrespecting you on purpose. Anywho, I wanted to do an indoor activity and this was the perfect place to lounge around for hours and look at books I can’t read because they’re in Nihongo, but the pictures were dope. But the library also speaks the universal language of coffee so enjoy some Starbucks, skim through the magazines while your sweaty shirt dries.
Alanglen49 — Google review
In 2013, Takeo City entrusted the operation to Culture Convenience Club (CCC), which operates Japan's largest franchise bookstore, Tsutaya. CCC's operational know-how, introduced in Korea through a book titled "Tsutaya, the Place Where Tastes Are Designed," has permeated Takeo Library. CCC President and CEO Muneaki Masuda is famous for transforming a bookstore that sells books into a comprehensive lifestyle shop that offers books and music and suggests lifestyles. He achieved great success by instilling "sensibility," which is often mentioned among the younger generation, into a bookstore. Like Tsutaya Bookstore, CCC increased the number of open bookshelves in Takeo Library and introduced a bookstore, cafe, etc. The operating hours have been extended from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and the library is open 365 days a year so that people can use it at any time.
Platinum G — Google review
Shouldn’t say it is a library or book shop, it should be treat as an art space of books. Photo are only allowed in designated area to preserve quite environment for library user. Book shops and Starbucks are mix with the library itself. Fun experience.
Martin C — Google review
Saw this library in the list of most beautiful libraries in the world. I haven’t really been to any and this is the first one. Indeed it was beautiful. I don’t know though if it’s worth it to travel all the way just to see the library and eat/drink Starbucks. Ahaha. But what I did was also go to Takeo Onsen. That way, travelling to Takeo itself becomes a proper trip.

Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
Takeo Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in Takeo City, Saga prefecture. It was constructed in 735 and is known for its enormous camphor tree that has been estimated to be over 3000 years old. Positioned behind the primary hall of the shrine, this sacred tree is Japan's sixth largest and can be discovered by walking through the bamboo woods. The Takeo Shrine is situated near an all-natural hot spring and provides a glimpse into Japanese tradition despite its small size.
One of the most beautiful shrines I’ve ever seen. Together with the couples trees and in particular the 3000 years old camphor tree, it takes your breath away. I hope I’ll be able to visit again.
Giorgia D — Google review
Definitely worth the visit. Such a serene and calm place. Also worth to check out the majestic 3,000 years old tree. Love it. No entrance fee. Opposite (5 mins walk) is the beautiful library and Starbucks

분위기가 좋습니다. Takeo Shrine武雄神社) is a historic Shinto shrine located in Takeo, Saga Prefecture, Japan. It is known for its deep connection to the region's history and culture, dating back to its founding over 1,300 years ago. The shrine is dedicated to the deities of war and protection, making it a place where locals and visitors alike come to pray for safety, success in endeavors, and good fortune. One of the most iconic features of Takeo Shrine is the ancient camphor tree (樟, Kusunoki) located within its grounds, believed to be over 3,000 years old. This massive tree is considered sacred and is a symbol of longevity and strength. The shrine is surrounded by serene natural beauty, with the Takeo Hot Springs (武雄温泉) nearby, making it a peaceful retreat for those seeking spiritual and physical rejuvenation. Takeo Shrine is also the starting point for the climb up to Mount Mifuneyama (御船山), where the famous Mifuneyama Rakuen garden is located, offering stunning seasonal landscapes. Whether you're interested in history, nature, or spiritual practices, Takeo Shrine offers a rich experience reflective of Japan's deep cultural heritage.

The tree is 3000 years old and very cool !!! The bamboo trees are very huge and tall ! The god here is very famous and highly recommend you to buy their 御首 and salt for protection!
Lili E — Google review
It was a unique shrine and a bit different from the ones I have been to since there is a more than 3,000 year old camphor tree found within the premises. You can visit the tree by going through this path at the back of the shrine and through a mini bamboo forest. This is quite near the Takeo City Library so you might consider visiting that after lingering here for a bit.
Jose P — Google review
Regular shrine. Has a large ancient tree at the back. Not worth going out of your way to visit, but is a nice place to stop and stretch your legs if driving by.
Vanessa — Google review
It is a shrine near Takeo Natural Hot Spring. This is a shrine where you can feel the Japanese tradition even if it is small. There is a god tree that praises the relationship and good relations between the couple. By the way, this is also famous as a power spot. Please stop by and see when you go to the hot spring. Free parking is available.
Merge P — Google review
The Takeo Shrine is very nice and well maintained. We visited in mid April and the flowers were starting to bloom and cherry blossoms were almost all gone. The Giant Camphor behind the Shrine is amazing. You can no longer walk all the way up to the tree, but you can see that there is a small shrine inside the hallowed out portion of the tree. Free parking at the Shrine. Really enjoyed the visit.

Museums
The Saga Prefectural Space & Science Museum offers an immersive experience on various topics including dinosaurs, evolution and astronomy. This futuristic space features interactive displays and a planetarium that allows visitors to explore and learn in a fun way. The museum is especially great for children between the ages of 3-10 as there are plenty of activities available. However, the restaurant is not recommended as it can be crowded and the food quality may not be up to par with its price.
Very comprehensive !! We had a good time there the whole afternoon.

This trip with my son and his classmates was truly exceptional! Packed with learning opportunities and thrilling moments, we're already planning our next visit. It's a perfect blend of entertainment and education, providing a solid two hours of family fun.
Tony W — Google review
I had a wonderful time here. Everything is interactive and fun. Worth the admission price and more. The staff here are excellent, helpful, and attentive. Would recommend to anyone passing by to stop by and leave enough time to explore all the floors.
Biqi — Google review
Like this place a lot! It’s the reason we traveled to Takeo during this trip to Kyushu! 🚀🛰🛸🦕🦖 A great place to rekindle the long-lost curiosity I had when I was a kid! 😆 Wonderful illustrations and setups to let young kids explore and experience! (There were lots of school kids on the day we visited the museum)
K F — Google review
Great place to spend a day with children (3-10 years old), plenty activities available. The only thing terrible is the restaurant, where we waited for long time to get relatively expensive and mediocre food. If you don’t want to spoil a day, plan a lunch in other place.
Roman S — Google review
Fun science museum with lots of interactive exhibits. Covers all aspects of science. Has a great space exhibit.
Rick L — Google review
Love this place so much my family hasd good time
Mi S — Google review
Packed with kiddy things to do, that adults will enjoy too It is a sort of science museum with all sorts of buttons to press and things to see, and a few experiences that you are unlikely to find elsewhere such as: a moon walk simulation machine, on springs, a spin yourself nauseous person-sized sit-in gyroscope, and a space shuttle landing computer simulation. There are also exhibitions of local fauna such as poisonous millipedes, or jellyfish depending on the year. The temporary exhibition this year was of cog-wheel powered dolls that laugh or blow each other kisses when you spin a handle. There are lots of Japanese school children that come and go in buses. There are swan themed pedal boats on, and a jogging path around, the lake, that people rarely use, preferring the air-conditioned space-station museum. While my children enjoyed the museum for the third time, I jogged around the lake and went to a local swimming pool to get a shower. It is cheap too at about 500 yen for adults and 100-300 yen for children depending on their age. Our children are happy to be there for three hours on their third visit. If you want to experience the planetarium guide to the galaxy, that nearly doubles the price. We have not tried it. The champon noodles in this Takeo area are great, and is the hot spa.

Maerchen Village

Theme park
Water & Amusement Parks
Marchen Mura, a whimsical amusement park designed with a fairytale theme, is suitable for children from infants to lower grades of elementary school. Visitors can purchase a ticket that allows them to ride six paid vehicles for 1000 yen and enjoy many free playsets all day long. The park also features areas where parents, grandparents and other visitors can rest and relax. Additionally, there is an animal feeding corner available for visitors' enjoyment.
Underrated find for families with young children! Planned only as a short stop off on the drive from Nagasaki to Fukuoka, we ended up spending a few hours here and wish we could have stayed longer! Soo much for our little ones to explore - from ball pit, to a show, to indoor play areas, to rides and a train! Even though the facilities are quite old, everything was clean and the food was great! So family friendly and well thought out! Highly recommend to check it out for families with little ones!
A F — Google review
better than I expected Almost no foreigner here Not much to play for big kid But however if you have a kid between 3-6 years old I think they will have a great time here.
Xie B — Google review
Uh… it’s… special. It’s a little theme park that got stuck in the past. No renovations or anything since then, but that kind of makes it fun. Fairy tale themed, but I’m not sure what the fairy tale is. Cute for little kids, hot and kind of expensive for adults. The theme song should also be banned. That song was driving me bonkers.

Anthony C — Google review
(Translated by Google) I visited on a weekday after the summer holidays. This was my first time visiting, so I don't know how crowded it is on weekends, but it was very quiet and nice (lol). All rides are 300 yen and require a ticket system. I recommend the 1000 yen card, which lets you ride six times! It's also very convenient because you can share one card. The pool requires one ticket or one stamp. Adults don't need a ticket or stamp if they don't use the pool. The pools are separated into two sections, one for children 3 and over and one for children under, so even small children can play safely. Children under 3 years old must wear swim trunks. The pool itself isn't very large, but it's shallow, so it's safe to play in. Float rentals are 100 yen, and beach balls are available for free. Almost all QR codes are accepted at the entrance and the shop! Be careful, though, as the restaurant only accepts cash. I didn't have much cash on me, so I left and went to a nearby 7-Eleven (lol). The restaurant had a wide selection of menu items, including light snacks, summer specials, and dishes featuring Saga beef. There's an air-conditioned rest area right next to the restaurant, where you can enjoy your meal at your leisure. However, since the indoor playground is also in the same building, children's voices can get loud on weekends. There are benches in the rest area, so it looks like you could take a nap (lol). There are also massage chairs. You can also feed the animals. There are three types of food, all 100 yen each, and cash only is accepted here. It was my first time feeding the squirrels 🐿️, and they were so cute. Overall, I think the park is aimed at preschoolers and early elementary school students. There's an original song playing throughout the park, and it's stuck in my head (lol). All in all, you can play all day here. I'd like to come again.

(Translated by Google) While the facility is older, the restrooms have been newly renovated, QR code payment is available, and the staff are incredibly friendly. This local amusement park is wonderful. [Admission Fee and Amusement Tickets] Admission is ¥1,200 for adults, with an additional fee for children 3 and over. Annual passes are also available. Amusement rides are available in advance as a ¥300 single-ride ticket, or a ¥1,000 (six-ride) ride passport, which is handed over at the boarding area. There's no expiration date, so the six-ride pass is by far the best value. Lol. You can also use it when entering the pool area. (Ages 3 and up) [Pool] *The pool in R7 was open until September 15th, but just for reference. Children up to two years old could enjoy themselves with just the swim ring fee (¥100). Separate areas for each age group ensure safe play. The covered area protects children from direct sunlight. Toys are provided in the area for children up to two years old. Coin lockers are available for valuables. There were plenty of chairs and tables. There's also a (slightly old) restroom nearby. [Lunch/Break] A large indoor playground and dining area is located a short walk up a steep hill. This is a very comfortable spot during the sweltering summer heat. The snack bar sells curry, udon noodles, potatoes, shaved ice, and more. There's also a microwave. Some people bring their own rice balls and baby food. [Playground] There's a covered area, so it's perfect for rainy or hot days. (Trampolines, tricycles, etc.) It's quite small, but there are animals too. The amusement park rides are probably fun for children up to elementary school age. [Other] You can choose a small toy on your way home from the stamp rally. A safe and secure local amusement park in Saga. It doesn't have the same glitz and glamour as city parks, but it's a fun, compact place to enjoy. ♡ On your way back, be sure to soothe your fatigue with some gelato at the nearby Takenoko Cafe.

Takeo Onsen Romon is a historic site with a 1,300-year-old history and was popular among ancient samurai. The Romon, built in 1914, resembles the Dragon Palace Castle and is designated as an important cultural property. It houses 8 hot springs and serves as a significant gathering place for Takeo Onsen. Visitors can explore local products like onsen-tamago, pudding, cakes, and lemongrass tea while engaging with the friendly locals.
Visited at night during winter. If you want to try other baths, come earlier before 21:00. After that, the Motoyu will be the only bath that will be open. Even with one type of bath open, if you’re visiting Takeo-onsen or Saga, this is a must-feel experience!

Historic grand entrance gate that stands out with its impressive architecture. It serves as the entrance to the public bath of Takeo Onsen, inviting visitors to step back in time and appreciate the historic ambiance.

The hot spring is very small and is much like an old fashioned shared big hot tub with everyone naked. One hot spring bath costs only ¥500. Towels rental costs extra ¥300. You can stay as late as midnight if you want. Woman and man use separate ponds. One extra benefit is free WiFi. Hence it is a good stop for tourists.

Very cute gardens and museum. If you happen to be visiting Mifuneyama, I think this garden is worth a look as well. The best time to visit this place is spring and autumn. The flowers are spectacular and the garden peaceful. Even though it is close to the main road, it’s so quiet and a nice place to relax and escape. Wandering around the buildings is very nice and everyone was so helpful and kind when I visited.

Maybe it's because I'm a terrible cook, but I can't resist trying to fry them at home and they never come out well, so I often end up with boiled gyoza instead. I've heard that ramen with tonkatsu on top is delicious, but I'm always worried about the calories so I don't always get it on top, and then I remember that once I've finished eating. Syokudo and Teishoku restaurant
カイロ堂, located in Takeo Onsen station, offers delicious bento boxes perfect for a train journey or to enjoy at your hotel. The cafe has received recognition for its food quality and has won the eki bento award for three consecutive years. Although the portions are small and prices are on the higher side, visitors praise the taste of their offerings. While there is no English menu available, it's a great spot to relax while waiting for your train.
To find the restaurant, you'll need to enter through a souvenir store or go outside of the station to enter from the front door. Even though the restaurant heated up the lunch box with a microwave, the beef still remained a perfect texture. The steak was still medium rare with pink inside which made me mouth watering with the perfect marble texture. Sparerib slices were also so good. Rice was a little mushy though. Overall, I highly recommend giving the sparerib and steak lunch box a try.

The Saga Beef Steak and Yakiniku Bento from Kairodo (¥2,484) is a luxurious ekiben and a must-try in Takeo-Onsen. Featuring thin slices of A5 Saga Wagyu beef, renowned for its exquisite marbling and tenderness, this bento delivers an unparalleled melt-in-your-mouth experience. The beef is expertly cooked and well-seasoned, offering a rich, sweet, and meaty flavor that lingers with every bite. Accompanying the steak is tender yakiniku beef, which pairs perfectly with the soft, fluffy rice for a harmonious balance of flavors. The attention to detail in both preparation and presentation elevates this bento, making it a standout culinary experience. Though priced on the higher side, the premium quality and unforgettable taste make it worth every yen. The thoughtful packaging ensures the meal remains fresh, adding to its appeal. If you’re visiting Takeo-Onsen, this indulgent treat is one you won’t want to miss!

TKB Awards

Hamburger restaurant
Fast food restaurant
TKB Awards is a must-visit spot for burger enthusiasts. The famous cheeseburger, served with delicious fries and a cold beer, is a standout. Customization options like adding jalapenos add an extra touch to the experience. The meat-to-bun ratio and fresh vegetables make for a satisfying meal. Additionally, the provision of hand sanitizer at every table and entrance shows their commitment to hygiene. While some may not find it groundbreaking, it's still worth trying out when in the area.
This place is amazing. I tried their Famous cheeseburger and I was extremely satisfied. Their combo deal included delicious fries and a very cold beer. It was definitely worth the price. The chef also agreed to add jalapeños which was a nice touch to the burger. The meat to bun ratio was great, and the vegetables were very fresh. I also noticed that they placed hand sanitizer at every table and at the entrance to help mitigate spreading of germs.

A tasty burger. It didn’t rock my world like other reviews, nor did I think it was the best burger I’d had in Japan. Fries were decent. Still very good though, and worth stopping by if you’re in the area. My partner who ordered the onion rings said they were good!

Burgers are alright, just average I reckon, we had the cheese burger and fried pork burger, personally I still prefer the cheese burger as the pork is a bit stiff. We had it take away because the restaurant doesn’t have many seats, just three tables and some bar seats, and with only one toilet. (Don’t order fries if you do take away, coz cold fries are 🤮)

Anbai is a delightful izakaya restaurant that offers an exquisite dining experience with seasonal ingredients. The establishment also boasts a wide range of Arita ware and other tableware, adding to the ambiance and aesthetic appeal. Patrons can choose between sitting at the counter, where they can observe the skilled shopkeeper's handling, or opt for a low table seat with a sunken kotatsu for a more relaxed atmosphere.
My parents and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves at Anbai tonight! The boss and his family were very hospitable and welcoming(: they knew we were foreigners and did not speak Japanese, so that went a further mile to use Google translate to let us know what we were eating, and even to chat with us ☺️ he showed us his dishware collection from Arita, Imari and even personalised ones with his face 3D printed! This store is known nationwide and attracts customers from various prefectures. On my second visit, I was amazed by the size and price of their beef tendon dish when I picked up some oden.

I ordered the ramen with raw egg, which is a must-have for Saga ramen! Recently, I've been craving white rice with my pork bone ramen, so I ordered the rice set too! There is also a self-service oden corner in the store, which is quite popular. The ramen soup is a mellow, rich pork bone soup with a strong flavor. It is so rich that it almost overpowers the richness at the end. The noodles are medium-thin and have a chewy texture that goes well with the soup. Of course, I like the thin noodles in Hakata, but I also like these. The char siu is thin and delicious when wrapped around rice. I cracked a raw egg halfway through and ate it, which added richness. (Translated by Google) I visited at 12:30 on a Saturday. Perhaps because of the intermittent rain, there was no waiting and two tables were available. You purchase a ticket from the ticket machine at the entrance, hand it to the staff, and then take your seat. The menu basically consists of ramen, oden, and rice. There are three types of ramen: special ramen, char siu noodles, and ramen, each available in large servings. The ticket I purchased was for a large serving of special ramen. It was served in about eight minutes. The special ramen is what they call a full-portion (green onions, char siu, and raw egg). The char siu consists of about 10 thin slices of half-fat pork densely layered on the surface, accented with green onions and egg yolk. As per reviews, the soup is a cloudy, creamy pork bone broth with little odor, deep umami, and a clean aftertaste. You'll be tempted to drink it all up. The noodles are medium-thick and slightly curly. It has a light texture with little wheat flavor. Eating it with the soft, fatty pork slices brings out the soup nicely and is very tasty! Adding some garlic powder from the table to change the flavor gives it a more defined and deeper flavor, making it even more delicious! It's a taste that you'd expect from a famous restaurant! As you can see, there were three groups waiting when we left. We must have been lucky to get in at the right time♪ Thank you for the meal! We checked in before opening, purchased our tickets, and waited until the restaurant opened. Since we were third in line, we were able to be seated early. The smell may be a bit off-putting for those unaccustomed to tonkotsu ramen. My friend ordered ramen with a raw egg, and I ordered ramen without. We started with the soup. It was a slightly thick broth topped with pork and green onions. There was some garlic powder, so we sprinkled a little on it. I thought it was a little strong. Compared to the ramen I'm used to, the overall flavor was lacking. My friend added a bit of the raw egg and mixed it with the noodles, making the flavor milder. Takeoyakinikukan Katsu

$$$$affordable
Yakiniku restaurant
Suggested by the amicable team at Takeo Century Hotel, one might assume that this establishment would be costly; however, it is reasonably priced. The cuisine is delectable and the employees are warm and diligent. To taste the exquisite imari beef, a visit to this restaurant is highly recommended. Enjoy delightful yakiniku prepared by affable staff members, and don't forget to request the variation with additional fat.
Recommended by the friendly staff at Takeo Century Hotel. We first thought that this place will be expensive but it was reasonably priced. The food was good and staff was friendly and attentive. A must try place for imari beef.

(Translated by Google) My husband took me out for lunch after a drive! This yakiniku restaurant is famous for its Imari beef and seems to be a popular yakiniku restaurant in Takeo City. As expected from a popular restaurant, the meat was fresh and delicious. The sauce was quite sweet. The soup is served in a bowl and it's a bit too much so next time I'd like to share it with my husband 😅 Bibimbap...I personally don't like it 💦 I was surprised by the staff's response, as the young staff's voices were low and difficult to hear, and they suddenly took away empty dishes as they passed by. (Translated by Google) It's expensive lol. Drinks, including alcohol, are cheap, but meat is expensive. When it's expensive and they bring it frozen, it kind of puts you off. The taste is pretty good. Also, they don't bring the freebies (gochujang or cold water) even when you order them. Maybe they'll bring them if you order them twice. One of the meat dishes hadn't arrived, so I asked the waiter when they brought the drinks, and they said they'd check, and then another waiter brought it to me as usual. They didn't even apologize for the wait.

Comes with 2 types of sauce, soft drink, and vegetable salad. Afterwards, the rice and soup are brought to you and you are given free refills. Is it bothersome to wait for the meat to be cooked? So, drink up the soup. Request a second helping of soup. However, they ask for a refill of the soup, which is a mystery. La Mia Casa

$$$$affordable
Italian restaurant
La Mia Casa is a delightful culinary gem that promises an unforgettable dining experience. Recently, I revisited this charming spot for dinner after a few years and was thrilled by the exquisite flavors of their dishes. The dinner course, priced at 4,400 yen, featured an impressive array of four appetizers, a fresh salad, and both fish and meat as main courses—each bite was simply divine!
The owner/cook is really friendly and the food is delicious. He uses fresh ingredients and cooks in a very authentic Italian style. The restaurant serves only course meals but you get amazing value at 2000 yen. I started off with a really tasty salad with grilled vegetables, followed by a bitter melon pasta that I really enjoyed, the main course(have an option of 5 courses) for me was chicken and my friend ordered the large slab of bacon cooked in it’s own fat, and ending in a melon custard dessert which was fabulous. Every course tasted really good and I would definitely return to sample their other lunch options. Dinner has more options so I can only imagine how appetizing that would be. A top notch quality meal that I would recommend without hesitation.

La mia casa is an incredibly high quality italian restaurant, with a good selection of wines and champagnes. The menu is fairly small compared to other restaurants in the area, but the food itself is exceptionally well made and at a very reasonable price. Seating is limited, so it's best to make reservations.

Ide Chanpon is a popular establishment in Takeo City that specializes in champon, a delectable noodle dish prepared with pork, seafood, and vegetables. This renowned venue offers an array of options for those who prefer alternatives to pork meat or tonkotsu, such as oyokodon or tamagodon. It caters to individuals with religious dietary restrictions without compromising on taste.
This place sells Japanese chanpon, they are very famous in Takeo City. For your information, if you don't eat pork meat or tonkotsu, you can try oyokodon or tamagodon. It's safe for you the one with religion-restriction. By the way, this place is nice for eating dinner or lunch with your family, friends, or groups. Saga Ramen is a delightful culinary destination that promises an unforgettable experience for ramen lovers. The menu features an array of tantalizing options, and the dishes arrive at lightning speed—typically within just 10 minutes! One standout aspect is their perfectly thin and tangy noodles, which are a joy to slurp up, beautifully complemented by a rich and flavorful broth.
The ramen menu all looked mouth-watering. The stuff I ordered came very fast! About 10min. I hate ramen with thick noodles, but the ramen here has proper thin and tangy noodles. I could taste the flavours from the ramen just from smelling it. I loved every slurp of the ramen noodles, the flavourful soup tangled with the noodle. They also have such good gyoza (ate it in a breeze), very crispy and juicy on the inside. Its about 2-bite size, so its easy to eat! The ramen broth was very thick and tangy but not oily. You drink the broth, and you taste the amazing flavour. No guilt in between. Fukuoka Airport

Airport
International airport
Fukuoka Airport (FUK) is conveniently located near the city center and offers easy access via underground, bus, or car. It features both domestic and international terminals, with direct rail service to Fukuoka. Despite being one of Japan's smaller airports, it is the fourth busiest in the country, serving passengers from domestic destinations and other parts of Asia. The airport boasts observation decks, free WiFi, nursing rooms, and a clean environment.
The redesign is superb, especially the international departures area. I saw how it changed over time. During my visit in May 2025, a central food station (Hakata Food Station) was already in place, and duty-free stores were placed. Because there are plenty, you will never run out of seats, charging stations, or toilets.
Harby N — Google review
Visited in July 2025 (International Terminal only) One of the reasons why this airport is great (for its users) is that it's located right in the downtown, with a subway line connecting both places. One even can walk from the shinkansen station to the international terminal in 30 minutes or slightly more if he/she is especially in a mood of a walk or a bit energetic. The international terminal itself is well designed, easy to use, and stylish for a medium-sized airport. I saw some reviews posted some months ago complaining the lackluster quantity of seating in the airside - can confirm this problem is largely rectified.

Fukuoka Airport is a great airport. Clean, well-maintained, and very organized. Facilities are modern, signage is clear, and the overall layout makes it easy to navigate. Staff are friendly and efficient, making the travel experience smooth from check-in to boarding. A pleasant gateway to Kyushu!

Having passed through the newly renovated Fukuoka Airport in 2024, I was thoroughly impressed. While it retains its compact and manageable size, the updates have given it a wonderfully fresh and refreshing feel, making it a very pleasant place to arrive or depart from. The greatest advantage remains its incredible convenience. Its location is unbeatable, being one of the closest airports to a major city center in the world. The addition of free shuttle rides from the international terminal to the subway station is a fantastic touch, making the commute into the heart of Fukuoka an absolute breeze. It’s a model of efficiency and user-friendly design.
Sorlo S — Google review
Such a pleasant little airport—compact, efficient, and actually quite pretty compared to many other international airports in Asia. Immigration was smooth and quick, plenty of seating areas, and a few lounges to relax in. Pro tip: take the metro to the last stop, Fukuoka Airport, then follow the exit for the free shuttle to the international terminal. It’s super quick, a short walk, and way easier than expected!
Genta — Google review
Be aware that the international and domestic terminals are in separate locations — you’ll need to take a shuttle bus for about 5–10 minutes. The airport itself is efficient, clean, and easy to navigate. Plenty of shops inside, with just the right balance — not overwhelming, but enough variety to find what you need. Security lines move quickly, making it one of Japan’s better airports for smooth travel.

Fukuoka Airport leaves a mixed impression. On the positive side, the international terminal is clean, modern, and well maintained, with clear signage, spotless restrooms, free baggage carts, and a wide range of restaurants and souvenir shops. 👌 On the negative side, the connection (about 25 minutes) between the international terminal and the metro station located at the domestic terminal is a hassle. Passengers are forced to take a free shuttle bus, often standing with their luggage, just to cross the airfield. 🥴
Big D — Google review
Nothing beats a direct flight to FUK. Fukuoka Airport is probably Japan's best airport in terms of proximity to the city centre. It is so convenient! Some tips for the airport: When you enter the arrival lobby and see the information centre and Tully's, the JR pass exchange counter is to your left. Next to it is a seasonal fruit store where you can score some great tasting produce. The SIM card/WiFi counters are on the right towards Lawson. Straight ahead is the bus berth taking you to Hakata, Dazaifu, Yufuin (if you want to hit the ground running!) The newly opened Food Hall you heard about is located in the transit area of departure terminal. The subway is exactly located at the domestic terminal, so if that's your mode of transport, take a shuttle over where you can also purchase their regional IC card (nimoca). You can also purchase Sugoca from the bus ticketing counter facing the road. We took the airport bus to Hakata, a 15-20 minutes ride to Hakata station, a main transport hub of Kyushu. The bus isn't very well-equiped in terms of luggage space, like a pre-converted bus that hasn't decided to leave it's day job.

Kumamoto Airport

Aso Kumamoto Airport is a convenient gateway to the Kyushu region, offering easy access to cities like Hiroshima, Fukuoka, Nagasaki, and Kagoshima. Upon arrival in the city center, travelers can hop on the Kumamoto City Tram for a picturesque journey through the heart of the action. This affordable mode of transportation provides a charming way to explore the city while avoiding urban traffic.
Newly renovated compact but modern airport with handful of dining options pre-security as well as more extensive options inside. Don't bother using the lounge as there is no view and feels boxed in - the gate area is good enough for chilling.
Sho Y — Google review
Early July 2025. Small airport. Airport bus took about 40 minutes to reach here. As the counters have opening hours and the international checkin is a small area, I didn’t know where the checkin counters were. I went up to the second floor where the actual departure custom is located. Then I went back to first floor realizing the closed area is actually the checkin counter. I can extrapolate that if the airport is crowded, it might be pretty long queue for airlines without dedicated counters. The international departure has only one duty free shop and one tea room for tea. If you want to shop or eat at restaurants, after the custom, you move to the left into the domestic departure area. Then you have to go through the scanning again when you come back to international departure area. So those pictures you saw about restaurants and shopping belong to the domestic departure area. If you do not have luggage, you may want to explore. I have hand carried stuffs and didn’t want the hassle of baggage check again. So what you see in my photos here are the whole area of international area. That’s all. Two minutes walk one round. If you want shopping, go and pop into local departure area.

A cheerful and convenient airport full of Kumamon charm and One Piece fun! Kumamoto Airport is a wonderful regional airport that perfectly captures the spirit of Kumamoto. As soon as you arrive, you’re greeted by Kumamon, the beloved bear mascot of the prefecture, along with One Piece-themed decorations throughout the terminal. The playful designs and cheerful atmosphere make travelers — both kids and adults — feel happy and excited from the moment they step inside. The airport is modern, clean, and easy to navigate. The first floor has several restaurants and souvenir shops, offering local specialties such as Kumamoto ramen and sweets, perfect for a quick meal before your flight or a last-minute gift. Domestic flight facilities are efficient, and check-in and security are generally smooth and well-organized. While it’s a smaller airport, it’s very well-equipped — there are convenient seating areas, charging points, and clear signage in English and Japanese. Transportation to and from the city is also straightforward, with bus connections to central Kumamoto. Overall, Kumamoto Airport combines functionality and local charm beautifully — a happy and welcoming gateway to Kyushu that leaves you smiling whether you’re arriving or departing.

Nestled in Mashiki, about 13 km northeast of Kumamoto city center, Kumamoto Airport serves as the main gateway to Kyushu and combines modern design with regional charm. Its new terminal, opened in March 2023, blends safety and aesthetics into a travel-friendly layout.

Small airport Domestic and international airport are same as the building. International airport gate will available for duty freeshop , the waiting seated room ,small macha tea cafe and vendingmashing ( can use the kakao pay)

Kumamoto Airport may not be as large as major hubs like Narita, but it offers an excellent travel experience. The airport is very clean and well-maintained, creating a pleasant atmosphere for travelers. One thing that stood out to me was the kindness and helpfulness of the staff. When we arrived, our luggage was already lined up and neatly arranged a small detail, but it speaks volumes about the efficiency and respect embedded in Japanese culture. Everything felt organized and stress-free, making it a smooth start to our trip. Highly recommended for anyone traveling to Kumamoto!

God awful airport. Sign said international passengers could use the shopping in domeestic departures, i tried to do this only to be told to go away by security. You can't even go through security until 90 mins before intl flights. Shockingly bad representation of kunamoto's government. Airport bus is confusing too

Nagasaki Airport

Airport
Sights & Landmarks
Observation Decks & Towers
Nagasaki Airport is located on an island and offers direct ferry service as well as an observation deck with grassy areas. Travelers can reach the Kitamatsuura Peninsula from Tokyo by taking a flight from Haneda Airport to Nagasaki Airport, followed by an airport bus to Sasebo, and then following directions in the Sasebo section.
A small airport, immigration was pretty fast and smooth. The airport is located pretty far from Nagasaki city, had to take a 30mins bus into the city. Ticket can be bought from the machines at the bus stop, one of the buses supports IC card if u have one. There is a small stairs to the observatory near the exit where the buses are. I didn't manage to go as I was rushing for the buses. There is a huge Nagasaki word made of grass bushes near the runway. Might be able to see it from here.

Nice, clean, manageable. There are small SNA feast stores, convenient and cheap for an airport. Make sure you shop on the right side of the security control!

I took the airport limousine bus (1200¥) within minutes of my plane's arrival from Tokyo. I bought the ticket from the vending machine and joined the Q at platform no. 5. I managed to secure a window seat. Those passengers who boarded later had to sit on seemingly uncomfortable seats in the middle row or in the aisle. I gave the ticket to the driver when I alighted at my stop-Chuobashi. If I'd dutifully topped up my IC card, I'd use the card instead.

Such nice view from both side of airport, please go up observation desk on 3/f for a look. Airport itself equips good transportation and signage. You can find shops and restaurant mainly on 2/f.

The Airport built in 1975 and supported a Concord has become small decades later. If taking an expensive taxi is not an option when traveling downtown ie the Shinchimachi, the only convenient traveling to and from the Airport is to use its 20-minute interval limousine bus costing just Yen 900 each way (around 80 minutes). I bought a ticket upon departure on Nov 23, 2018 and when I returned on November 27, I paid cash when alighting!
