Architectural Buildings
The Loggia del Lionello is a historic building located in the heart of Udine, Italy. It was built between the 15th century and showcases a beautiful blend of Gothic and Renaissance architectural styles. The building houses the Palazzo Comunale (the Town Hall) and features Venetian Gothic art with pointed arches and pink and white marble bands. Destroyed by fire in 1876, it was faithfully rebuilt to its original design.
Very beautiful arcade in Venetian-Gothic style, one of the oldest buildings in Udine. It reminds that in the past Udine was a part of the Venetian Republic. Very interesting place - you can walk through the arcade and enjoy nice view of the Piazza della Libertà via the arches. Also, nice view of the Loggia can be seen from the steps right after the Arco Bollani (on the way to the Udine Castle).

The waterfall is beautiful, but they have turned it into a children's park and charge 7 euros even if you don't use the park. Also it's cash only! Avoid at all costs!

The old townhall built in the Venetian Gothic style with white and pink marble at the most beautiful square in Italy. It was built between 1448 and 1457 to a design by goldsmith Nicolo Lionello hence the name. It was badly damaged by fire in 1876 but rebuilt as you can see.
Seimen B — Google review
A magnificent historic building. One of many that makes Udine worth checking out. Next door you have an excellent bar, Contarena. Udine past Venice up towards the border and seems to be unfairly overlooked.
Flying H — Google review
Nestled in the heart of Piazza Libertà in Udine, the Loggia del Lionello is one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, embodying both its architectural elegance and civic pride . Its roots trace back to 24 January 1441, when Nicolò Savorgnan proposed replacing the city’s humble administrative quarters with a grand new palace that would affirm Udine’s stature among the region’s great cities . After approvals and funding via a dedicated bread tax, work began in 1448, led by goldsmith-architect Nicolò Lionello, in collaboration with master builder Bartolomeo delle Cisterne. Construction concluded around 1456–57 . Made of alternating bands of pink and white stone, the façade is a stunning example of Venetian‑Gothic style. A portico with ten graceful arches defines its lower section, while the upper level features a central balcony flanked by two triforas and a decorative pentafora, enriched with medallions, bas‑reliefs of evangelists, and religious motifs like the Annunciation . Trials and Resilience Over the centuries, the Loggia endured natural and man‑made disasters. A powerful earthquake in 1511 inflicted damage that spurred repairs and enhancements, including structural reinforcements by Giovanni da Udine and architectural contributions like the Sansovino staircase and a Pordenone fresco of the Madonna con Bambino . In 1685, an accidental fire—started during celebrations of Venice’s victories—destroyed flammable furnishings. Although the building survived, many internal decorations were lost. Repairs followed, and a painting by Giuseppe Ghedina later replaced the original Pordenone work . The Loggia’s most devastating blow came in 1876, when another fire ravaged parts of the structure. It was faithfully restored by Andrea Scala, preserving the original design while safeguarding its future . More Than Just Stone Beyond its architecture, the Loggia served as the seat of the city council and a stage for social and cultural life. Frescoes by Nicolò da Venzone and Gaspare Negro, stained glass by Stefano di Settecastelli, busts of national figures, and meteorological instruments crafted by local artisans now adorn the interior or are preserved in Udine’s civic museums . A quirky historical detail: an early decoration featured a pulley and beam—used symbolically to hint at more sinister uses like torture in judicial proceedings of that time . A Story of a Moving Lion Legend says that one of the lions perched atop the Loggia shifts slightly whenever a just ruler is elected in Udine—a charming tale that connects architecture with civic virtue and keeps locals playfully watching for its movements ever since.

Just wondered around in the city and stopped at this wonderful loggia. It was a nice cooler day, but I imagine is must be a treat in the hot Summer days.
Csongor V — Google review
Today the Loggia del Lionello is a single corpus with the Palazzo degli Uffici Municipali, the work of the architect Raimondo D'Aronco and built in place of the ancient chancellery at the beginning of the twentieth century, in order to satisfy the needs of citizens. The Loggia del Lionello has a rectangular base that extends for 18.50 meters in width and 35.50 meters in length, while, in height, it develops for 15.20 meters.

Museums
The Museo Diocesano e Gallerie del Tiepolo in Udine is a must-visit for art enthusiasts. Housed in the Church of the Purita, it showcases Giambattista Tiepolo's masterpieces in the Gallerie del Tiepolo. The museum features an array of captivating paintings, sculptures, and a library with numerous codices. Visitors can admire Tiepolo's earlier frescos on the second floor.
This museum is so far the most beautiful place in Udine. The rich history of Friuli region is presented in the museum and it is worth visiting for sure. The location of the museum - close to the park, the old part of the city and a bus stop. Easy to reach and definitely a must for everyone who would like to find out more about the region.

Very beautiful museum! Fresco are incredible, as well as a big room with cardinals (I guess) frescoes. The newest is dated 2012.

To see Tiepolo in origin is amaizing, therefore you go there. other parts less interesting or not presented adequatly.
Oksana — Google review
Not the classic Italian museum but a relatively small exposition. The highlight has been the biblioteca Delfino, really impressive both for the charming architecture and the books hosted there. The Tiepolo frescos are marvellous, despite not being particularly passionate of XVIII century paintings myself. The museum is a little jewel close to the charming Udine city center.
Agostino B — Google review
8€ seems a bit too much for this museum which can be visited in less than an hour. Highlight is the hall of the ospiti with paintings by Gianbattista Tiepolo.

Worth a visit. Not only the Tiepolos but the Library and the other State rooms.

(Translated by Google) Since the fourteenth century, near the portico, there was a small church consecrated to San Giovanni, which, during the fifteenth century, was rebuilt by the architect Bernardino da Morcote next to the new Clock Tower. The loggia, also admired by Andrea Palladio, is made up of two wings of arches and the triumphal arch that leads to the church, converted into the Pantheon of the Fallen in 1920 based on a design by Raimondo D'Aronco. Under the dome, there is a statue representing Glory, by Aurelio Mistruzzi, and a fresco by Enrico Miani. An elegant gate by Alberto Calligaris guards the entrance. Here, in the sixteenth century, the headquarters of the notarial archive, the chancellery of the bystanders and the fiscal chamber were established. The wings of the portico house a sundial dating back to 1798 and the busts of Giovanni Battista Cella (1881) by Andrea Flaibani, that of Antonino di Prampero by Aurelio Mistruzzi (1921) and that of Gabriele Luigi Pecile created by Leonardo Liso (1902).

(Translated by Google) Very nice We were in Udine on Easter Monday 21st April and walking around the historic center we arrived in Piazza Libertà. Initially, there was the Church of San Giovanni which, after the earthquake of 1511, was demolished and renovated by the Lombard architect Bernardino da Morcote, who in addition to rebuilding the church, designed the portico and the Loggia homonymous, vaguely referring to the style of Brunelleschi. In 1917 the Austrians occupied Udine after the defeat of Caporetto and restored the loggia of San Giovanni as a "Guard"; on 3 November 1918 Udine was liberated from Austrian rule.

The highest point of Udine, with 360 degrees view. In every direction you can see either rooftops or mountains or church domes. There is a lift there for those who can't/don't want to go up by foot. Worth visiting, you won't regret it.

A Castle in the top of a hill in Udine right above the main square of Udine. When I went, there was a slight rain and a huge stage with lot of chairs were set up right in front of the Castle. The Castle houses a Museum as well, which needs ticket to enter. You can either climb through a flight of stairs or the steep incline right to the top. You can fleetingly see the golden statue but I found it difficult to take a snap of it as the angle is very difficult. The sky was full of rain clouds as well. I managed to click the back side of the statue from there and a side view from the road while walking to Piazza I Maggiore garden near the Castle. Overall, a good experience of seeing the entire Udine city from the top.
Nikhil R — Google review
I think the greatest tourist spot in the Castello is the courtyard which offers almost 360 panoramic view of the city. I was not aware of the existence and was amazed as we climed up and the it appeared behind the building. The kids were not interested in museums, so we just came for the view. But worth any time.

Beautiful aspect high up on the hill. Weren't allowed in the church, and the nearby museum seemed geared to local exhibits about which I know almost nothing. But had nice outdoor cake and drink at the cafe. The waiter was very friendly and spoke excellent English

We (as a family of 4 with 9 and 18 years old kids) entered free of charge with the family ticket which was a surprise, because their website doesn't advertise a family ticket. I really liked the exhibitions (archaeological, risorgimento, paintings, photos), especially the parliament room (big, richly painted hall). From the castle's yard there is a pretty view to the town.

At 6pm the museum was open to visitors and I entered enthusiastically: to my great surprise I saw some wonderful paintings on the walls belonging to the era of the patriarchs in Friuli, a marble tomb supported by statues which is a true masterpiece. There are also original sacred vestments with a broadsword. In the center there was once a baptistery with marble steps, the first Christians in fact were baptized by immersion like Jesus in the river. Now the ancient baptistery is no longer there, too bad! In its place a marble baptistery built in 2006. The only, if I’m not mistaken, contemporary museum in the area. The Paradoxa temporary exhibition that I’ve seen was very interesting. An open door to the Korean world, especially the north which is often unexplored. I also had the time to watch the lovely 2 floor permanent exposition which have paintings/drawings from big names Picasso to Chagall to De Chirico and less known ones (De Chirico’s brother). There’s loads so definitely take your time. I preferred the last floor than the middle one.

I'm not sure how many tourists stay here, but my wife and I spent two nights visiting Udine. Above this lovely Osteria, there are 6 charming rooms that can be booked from their website. We stayed in the Turquoise room (5). Good osteria to take a good time rest or happy hour. Good selection of cheese and cold cuts. Good selection of wine . Really nice terrace on the canal water flow, in the middle of the center of cute city Udine

Our most favourite place in Udine. Every time we visit town ( first visit september 2017 ..) , we just enjoy glass of wine or aperol , together with fantastic mortadella or cicchetti. Truly great institution with friendly people and vibrant atmosphere. Thankx for lovely surprise for our kid btw ! Grazie !

We are so happy that we found this osteria as we were visiting Udine. Very nice folks who know how to be great hosts. Wine and food were just perfect!

One of my favorite places in town. Friendly staff, local hangout, and delicious food and drinks. This place is one of the reasons I get back to Udine. The food is absolutely out of this world; try everything, and then you still want to eat more! Tip for English speakers: it can be helpful if you know a few basic Italian phrases. The staff is super friendly and patient, but not everyone here speaks English.

Second stop in Udine as Jorvic needed some food. Small inside bar with main seating outside on the cobbled street. (Hidden room at back..where the hole in the floor toilet resides.) Good local vibe. The meat and cheese platters are popular so we had to order one. Delicious. Lovely crusty bread to go with it. 22 € for the platter. 4.50€ big beer and 3.50 for a wine.

Excellent, no need for a menu - just have the place provide you!

It’s a traditional osteria winery place. Good snacks, good wine, friendly staff. The atmosphere is casual & easy going. There is an open kitchen area at the back were you can see them making the snacks, the mortadella is huge!😄😃

Osteria Al Vecchio Stallo

Mentioned on

Northern Italian restaurant
Osteria Al Vecchio Stallo is a charming and rustic restaurant that offers a fascinating dining experience. The contrast between the grizzled owners speaking Friulano and the bubbly West African women cooking traditional dishes creates a unique atmosphere. The menu features authentic Friulian cuisine such as frico, musetto, brovata, sausages cooked in vinegar with onions, and cjarsons.
I recently visited here and tried the Stinco di Maiale con Polenta and Caponata. Both dishes were incredibly delicious! The portions were very generous, and I found myself too full to finish everything. However, every bite was truly enjoyable.

Beautiful traditional looking restaurant where we ate after arriving late into Udine. Wine wasn't on the menu so asked how much for a litre of house red, told 8 or 10 euros so somewhat surprised to be charged 10. I had spaghetti with clams and a side of caponata. Very good. Husband ordered liver and onions with a side of potatoes. Good but a very small portion of liver. After the main courses arrived we had to ask for the contorni. With a bottle of water and 2 espresso the bill came to 60.30 euros.

Very nice and cheap restaurant. No one speaks English though and you will have to look every dish on the internet but if you’re into a real authentic local experience, then this is the place!

Four American friends in Udine for the first time-this was recommended. Wonderful food! Everything we tried was delicious, especially the desserts. And the family running it was very friendly and took good care of us.

Typical Friuli "trattoria" serving local food, decorated in rustic style (the name means "Old Stables"). 4 appetisers + 2 starters + 2 mains + 2 sweets + 2 bottles of water + 1.5 litres house wine + 3 grappas + 5 coffees = €113. A few minutes' walk from the central attractions. Easily-reachable by bus, and plenty of street parking, as it's just off an internal ring road.

Nice little osteria . Typical food of the region of Friaul. We eat pasta and gnocci. Table wine was also very good. We had a nice evening. For all, who eat only pizza in italy - no pizza.

Hands down the best restaurant we’ve tried in Udine. Everything from the atmosphere to the food was amazing. We had eggplant gnocchi, eggplant parmigiana, and pasta with pork (I don’t remember the name) and all three were super tasty, and came warm (I hate it when dishes are cold when they arrive to the table). The house wine is really good. Bread and olive oil was another level, too. They have a lovely patio to enjoy summer evenings. Highly recommend!

Incredible and unique Italian superb cuisine. I seldom say a 100% must visit, seriously, it is the one. The owner, Mr.Paolo, he’s so kind hearted and professional with caring. Food and wine recommendations are so perfect. The history of the restaurant is amazing (can see from the interior), the design of the restaurant is very elegant and cozy. Will be back again soon😊

Bad food . They brought a menu in which information about the content of fish in the dish is written in Italian, which we do not know. The waiter did not ask us about allergies and brought a pasta dish with fish, to which my husband is severely allergic. Our comment was answered, according to the law we did everything correctly, we should not write in English, although the main menu is in two languages. There were no apologies, the dish was included in the bill. I ordered sea bass in the oven. In fact, they brought half-cooked, cold fish, which, after trying it, I did not eat - it was not tasty. The dish was taken away, no comments were registered, everything was included in the bill. I do NOT recommend this place as it does not correspond to the stated menu, price level and extremely arrogant service. The empty tables speak for themselves. There are no visitors..

Hostaria Alla Tavernetta is a charming restaurant located near the dome, offering a blend of traditional Friulian cuisine and an extensive wine selection. The elegant tavern features brick arches, dark wood interiors, and a terrace for al fresco dining. The establishment boasts an impressive collection of prestigious wine bottles displayed on bookcases along the walls.
It was raining, and we were looking for a restaurant to have dinner. While walking through the centre, we came across this restaurant and decided to give it a try. At first glance, we can tell that the restaurant put extra effort into decorating the dish and ensuring that the food was served deliciously. We had the cheese platter, and each cheese was unique in its own way. Their appetizer shrimp were juicy and crispy. When we had the mains, the pasta was definitely al dente, and the octopus was grilled perfectly, soft on the inside while maintaining a slight charred on the outside. Upon being served, the host was especially welcoming, bringing great hospitality to everyone including us. The staff were professional and very accommodating as well. All in all, this is a restaurant that was worth the dining experience.

Just an amazing restaurant in Udine. Wonderful atmosphere, incredible local food, great selection of wine, kind and knowledgeable staff. Couldn't ask for much more, really. Absolutely recommended - try especially the cjarsons a d the prosciutto d'Osvaldo!!
Camilla Z — Google review
We had dinner here and while the restaurant was full, the service was extremely slow. It took 45 minutes to get our appetizer although it was just a plate of prosciutto. The wine was nice and they have a large selection! The food mostly good tasting, especially the meat, but vegetables were too greasy. We were particularly disappointed by the hidden charges, including a charge for a 'complimentary' chef's appetizer which we didn't order and an excessive fee for an extra plate to share a meal. These cheap tourist tricks really detracted from the quality of our visit.

This is truly a fine restaurant. Creative dishes expertly served from start to finish. I loved the gnocchi with plum and cinnamon as my starter. The bronzino main course was excellent as well - perfectly cooked and presented. Don't miss this one for a special dining experience in Udine. Oh, and make a reservation. We tried to get a last minute table last night and were unable, so we made a reservation for the next night.

I visited this restaurant recently. Overall, everything was fine. The food was delicious, the portions were decent. The drinks were also fine. The service was average, a little slow, but the staff was polite. The interior is nothing special, but cozy. The prices are average. I think they could improve the speed of service, but overall, it's not bad.

Fine dining restaurant
Until a few years ago, Ristorante Agli Amici 1887 was considered one of the top Italian restaurants in Udine, known for its provincial charm and status as the capital of a rich region. Despite expanding with successful ventures in Rovinj and Lido di Venezia, Agli Amici has maintained its elite position as the flagship establishment of the Scarello family.
A real moment of pleasure. The restaurant is really smart, but not old-fashioned, really elegant and modern. The personnel is extremely welcoming and nice, they'll make everything to let you be as comfortableas possible. You can have the aperitif in a warm lobby, and then you’ll continue the dinner in a brighter room. The dishes reflect perfectly the philosophy of the chef : no waste, he uses every part of the ingredients (vegetables, fish or meat).

It's a very special place, especially as you aren't looking for it, at the border of an industrial city like Udine. There is a very warm welcome in a special area to get the aperitif and some fingerfood. Afterwards getting to the table and deciding between a vegetarian and normal menu. I would recommend going for the vegetarian option as it's really something new. There are a lot of fermented parts, but also the smockyness is in loads of dishes. With the fish/meat option there there is the squit which is most likely the most outstanding dish of the whole restaurant. Also the sweetbread is exceptional. In my opinion some courses are overloaded with different aromas and tastes, which is especially for the Risotto and the desserts the case.aybe mushrooms in a dessert are something new and fancy which isn't someone else doing but it doesn't fit very well too. For me one of the worst desserts in quite some time, especially as I was expecting something more balanced. It was just too rough. The service was amazing and really helpful and kind. The ambience is okay but after a long menu the air gets rather bad. Overall, a good restaurant to recommend if money doesn't matter but I wouldn't go there again as the menu isn't fine grained enough.

Blindingly good food and service in this Friulian restaurant focused on local seasonal cuisine cooked very well by the talent Emanuele Scarello and his team. Wine pairing is recommended. I would lean a little more towards lunch just to get to the brighter side of the dining room. Leave plenty of room at the beginning for aperitivo!

Beautiful place Great food and drinks, excellent people! 100% perfect! In a beautiful avenue of Udine crossed by a water channel, this place, or as it is written on the plate "Osteria con cucina", we really did an immersion in a beautiful experience of local cuisine among flavors, colors and scents ecstatic! The outdoor tables were above the water channel and this evocative atmosphere kept us company for lunch. Good mise en place. The dishes were all presented very well, with skill and designed to make the palate enjoy them as much as the spirit. The very knowledgeable staff were able to advise us for the best of their local cuisine. Excellent choice of wines: with the appetizer I opted for the "Smoked glazed salmon, tzatziki and pepper breadstick" accompanied by a good white Friulano wine. For main course I chose their "Tagliolini allo sclopit (a local herb that was a real discovery!), Sea bass ragù and its eggs, accompanied by an amazing Pinot Noir Blauburgunder from South Tyrol - Alto Adige. To conclude a "Genius" sweet wine that makes you dream. Coffee eventually brought us back to "work" mode, but with a happy expression on our face. Thank you Chef!

I cannot complain about the quality of the food that I had (even if, especially when I pay 20€ for a starter, I expect that the prawns should be deveined) but for the bill has been high. I don't complain about it because the prices were clearly reported on the menu, but I've been really disappointed when, after asking me such an amount, the owner asked me if I needed a receipt! My darling, I didn't needed it, but it would be nice if also you pay correctly the taxes, as I do!!!

Basic simple food in family style. I like the sardines using onion and probably lemon. Tasteful for me. The Tiramisu is also good as it’s not too sweet but with the taste of wine. Given the price it’s really reasonable.
Pam K — Google review
A few minutes’ walk from the Castle, Osteria al Marinaio is a real gem. The goulash was incredibly tender – the meat practically melted in the mouth – and paired beautifully with the polenta, which was soft, delicate, and light, creating the perfect balance. The dessert, enriched with a touch of grappa, along with the wine and coffee, was a very pleasant finish. Even the lentils, though a bit salty for my taste, were flavorful and hearty. The atmosphere is truly unique and cozy, almost like being in a countryside cottage rather than in the city. It can get crowded, and service may take a little time, but the experience is absolutely worth it. A warm, authentic spot for anyone looking to enjoy a comforting meal in a welcoming setting.

The Food was AMAZING! The best Italian Food we ate. They don’t speak much English but they are very kind and try to understand you. I loved the atmosphere, the menu is written on the wall. The glass wine is cheap and delicious! We really enjoyed the restaurant and the food.
Jéssica M — Google review
My experience of this cosy family restaurant serving typical local cuisine totally lived up to my expectations based on the reviews I had read. Prices are so affordable for such tasty dishes and local wine, I mean where would you get a very decent glass of wine for €1 with your meal! It's cheaper than fruit juice! Andrea the owners' very affable son speaks English and patiently explained the dishes displayed on the board. The wild boar with blueberries & polenta and the tagliatelle with porcini mushrooms are fabulous. The frico is interesting to try but if you are on a low salt diet, it's on the salty side due to the heavy cheese content but the polenta it's served with is not salty, so provides balance. Other diners seemed mainly locals and it was busy even on a Tuesday evening, so do book ahead. It's really worth walking the 18 minutes away from the historical centre to eat here. I can't wait to return to Udine just to eat here again!

We stumbled upon this place accidentally, just before the after lunch closure, but they welcomed us in and were very tolerant of our noisy and messy toddlers. The food was delicious, probably the best we had during our two week holiday doing the Alpe Adria route. Seems like a very authentic place and very pleasant and friendly staff 💯.

Transportation in Udine

Getting around Udine can be a little daunting if you’re new here. We can help list some of the major public transportation methods if you don’t want to rely on a car.

Trieste Airport

Airport
International airport
Trieste Airport, located in the capital of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, serves as a gateway to this cosmopolitan city that blends Slavic, Austrian, and Italian cultures. The region boasts traces of ancient Roman civilization and has been revitalized after a devastating earthquake in 1976. Despite its small size, the modern and clean airport offers convenience with quick security procedures and direct access to the train station.
He and his wife mostly use airports in nearby Italy. Of course, due to the much wider availability of flights and competitive prices. Trieste Airport is often among them. Today we flew here from Ireland. A car was waiting for us at the P8 parking lot. We paid €62 for a good five days. Access to the parking lot is connected to the new overpass and it only takes 5 minutes to reach the airport building.
Bogdan M — Google review
I understand that this is a small airport, therefore i wouldn’t expect too much out of the business lounge. But the bare minimum requirements such as water or cleaning should be provided.
Andrea B — Google review
I can’t understand why are so many people complaining about this airport. It’s a refreshment after being on busiest airports in the world. Security is easy and fast, you don’t have to take buses/trains between terminals, there is not a lot of people around, 1st floor area before security is peaceful and nice, coffee and charging is easy to find. People complaining about food options or older facilities need to wake up, this is airport not a restaurant or hotel. You use it to travel between locations and most important thing is that it works and is easy/fast. I traveled here 10+ times and never experienced a problem. One thing I can say - prices in duty free are crazy. That’s why you eat before coming here and bring something with you.
Joe M — Google review
Flight out experience was great: quick security, good shop/duty free, plenty of toilets, but needs a lot more seats (which they have room for). Three stars reflects that there is no water refill tap (basic requirement and making people buy wasteful bottled water), plus the really slow passport control on landing. It took over 20 minutes, despite 3 desks being open and I was in the first 40 people off the plane. Good access to the train station via walkway, assume 10 minutes after passport control (though I ran it in 5!)

Bunch of racist staff.. once they realize you're from a poor country they behave very rude: Double checking your luggage on arrival, nitpicking on your personal food items, behaving like you're here to occupy their country, etc. Despite being in many places in Italy, I've never seen such a behavior in any other airport, only this one. Unfortunately, a lot of ICTP visitors, are booked a flight through this particular airport, who they may face an unwelcoming behavior upon their arrival. I'd rather fly to VCE airport, it's just an hour away, a lot cheaper, and more professional!

Venice Marco Polo Airport

International airport
Airport
Venice Marco Polo Airport is a bustling international transportation hub offering a variety of amenities such as restaurants, cafes, and shops selling upscale Italian products. Visitors to Venice often find dining to be expensive due to the city's reliance on boat transportation for supplies. However, with careful planning and a higher food budget, travelers can enjoy fabulous meals throughout their stay.
This airport is compact, convenient, and well-connected to the heart of Venice, making it an excellent choice for travelers. Located just about 30 minutes away by bus, it offers frequent and affordable public transportation options, with tickets typically costing around €10. Despite its smaller size, the airport is efficiently organized. The check-in desks are located near the entrance, and all departure gates are situated on the first floor, just a short walk away—making navigation quick and stress-free. After passing through security, passengers enter a spacious lounge area that spans both the first and second floors. Here, you'll find a wide variety of restaurants and eateries serving authentic Italian cuisine, from quick bites to full meals. Prices are quite reasonable, especially when compared to many other international airports. The airport also offers a range of useful amenities, including clean and accessible restrooms, ample seating areas, and a well-maintained car park. Whether you're arriving or departing, the overall experience is smooth, comfortable, and traveler-friendly. The airport also has beautiful paintings in the floor, vending machines and free drinking water in the ground floor.

Venice Marco Polo Airport – Calm, Convenient, and Kind People 🇮🇹✈️ Venice Marco Polo Airport was a pleasant surprise—small but modern, clean, and really easy to navigate. Unlike the usual chaos of bigger international airports, this one felt calm and efficient. From the moment we entered, the signage was clear, the lines moved quickly, and the whole process—security, check-in, boarding—was simple and stress-free. There aren't tons of restaurants or shops, but enough to grab a quick bite or coffee while you wait. It's not made for long layovers, but for a short stay before your flight, it's more than enough. Plus, its location is super convenient—just 20 minutes from Mestre and easily accessible from Venice itself via bus, shuttle, or water taxi. But what really made the experience memorable were the kind and helpful locals and staff. One of them went out of her way to explain a special ACTV transport pass for travelers under 30. For just €6, we got a youth card that gave us discounts at 200+ places—including museums, cultural sites, and cafés. On top of that, we could purchase a 72-hour unlimited ACTV transport pass, which covered all buses, trams, and water buses across Venice. Super convenient and budget-friendly! It was a thoughtful send-off after a magical trip. Not flashy, but peaceful, efficient, and filled with warm energy—just like Venice itself.

The Venice Marco Polo Airport is a well-organized and convenient airport. Transferring to and from Venice is easy and efficient, with clear transportation options available. Overall, I had a pleasant experience traveling through this airport — my flights departed on time, and my luggage arrived promptly. The only downside is that passengers need to take a shuttle to reach the airplane, which can be a bit inconvenient, especially during busy times or bad weather.

The average airport. Two nice notables: surprisingly uncrowded (visited on morning of June 10), more employees than passengers, an almost dead feeling which is great. Also, it’s fun and very unique to arrive or depart by boat adjacent to the terminal. Minor negative: our hotel bus had to inexplicably drop us at a designated spot away from the terminal doors, 300 meters or so from check-in, despite there were no vehicles at 6:30 AM. I guess this is a safety practice, just that 100s of busier airports allow drop offs at the terminal door. Check-in itself was easy here, security quick and uncrowded. The terminal here is pleasant enough but lacking any “wow” architecture or artwork, not really needed right?

What you may notice 1st is how quiet this airport is. There are many things happening, but compared to airports in the US…very quiet and clean. I recommend taking care of your airport transfer before arrival, it will assist in decreasing some of the anxiety about how to get where you are going! I spoke with many who took the public water transport and they weren’t happy at all..complaints of being crowded and it dropping you at a stop that is closest to your hotel is not a good way to begin your wonderful journey in Venice! Tip: I contacted my hotel and inquired if they had a dock and what water taxi company did they recommend..so glad I did this and won’t be one of those people on IG dragging my luggage up and over bridges…no way!

We had a plane to catch early 6am. There are few aspects as to why we chose to spend our night inside the airport. Firstly, my hotel had paid shuttle service running 10am to 10pm. Asking them to come extra early seemed like troublesome for us. So knowing my older kids would not wake up next morning for airport and finding no convenient transportation to the airport we choose to leave hotel by 8pm. Checkin was not indicated for our flight so we waited in the upper level of the airport. Some benches have no handles in between and many did. There are couple of charging stations and food areas and convenient stores that close by 8:30pm while lower level ones might remain open longer. Many folks laid asleep on benches so getting a small size blanket is totally worth the trouble. There are marble benches too which tend to get cold. The security on both levels is fantastic so that is one more reason we found staying over night in airport was a plus idea. So do not hesitate to stay in airport overnight. Just thought of sharing our experience because it was a place of unknown for us too.

Venice Marco Polo Airport (Aeroporto di Venezia Marco Polo) is the primary international gateway to Venice, situated approximately 13 km from the city center. Named after the Venetian explorer, it serves as a hub for both domestic and international flights. The airport is well-connected to the city and surrounding regions, offering various transportation options. Single Terminal Layout: The airport features a single terminal, streamlining navigation for travelers. Free Wi-Fi: Unlimited free Wi-Fi is available throughout the terminal, allowing passengers to stay connected. Dining Options: A variety of restaurants, cafes, and bars are available, offering both local and international cuisine. Shopping: Duty-free shops and retail outlets provide a range of products, including Italian fashion, electronics, and souvenirs. Lounges: The Marco Polo Club Lounge offers amenities such as snacks, drinks, Wi-Fi, and a terrace. Access is available for a fee or through programs like Priority Pass. Assistance Services: The airport provides assistance for passengers with reduced mobility and other special needs. Lost & Found: A dedicated Lost & Found office is located in the arrivals hall to assist with misplaced items. Bus Services: The ATVO Express Bus offers a direct connection to Piazzale Roma in approximately 20 minutes. The ACTV Line 5 bus also connects the airport to Piazzale Roma, with a journey time of around 25 minutes. Both services operate frequently throughout the day. Water Transport: Alilaguna water buses provide scenic routes across the lagoon to various points in Venice, including San Marco and Lido. Tickets are available at the airport or online. Taxis: Taxis are available at the airport, offering a convenient but more expensive option for reaching the city center. Car Rentals: Several car rental agencies operate at the airport, providing flexibility for travelers wishing to explore the Veneto region. Security and Check-in: During peak travel times, it's advisable to arrive at least 2–3 hours before your flight departure to allow ample time for check-in and security procedures. Currency Exchange: ATMs are available at the airport, but be aware of potential fees. Currency exchange services are also offered, though rates may vary.

Venice Marco Polo Airport is an experience like no other place I've ever been. We arrived by private boat taxi. From the dock area, you take the elevator to the 1st floor and proceed to the terminal. It's a very beautiful airport, but I can't remember the last time we were shuttled to the plane by bus.
