The Astronomical Clock of the Cathedral of Messina is a must-see attraction in the city. Located at Piazza del Duomo, it is part of the impressive Cathedral that also houses Santissima Annunziata dei Catalani, another significant church in Messina. The Regional Museum nearby offers a diverse collection including paintings, sculptures from the medieval period, and ancient artifacts.
What a magnificent clock tower. Its beautiful to look at insied and out. Great views from the top and beautiful to see inside all the mechanical parts. Well worth the climb. Its paired brilliantly at the right time (lunch time) with the clock in action. A big crowd enjyed the fantastic lion and other moving parts. You can also get a ticket to go into the Cathedral museum, also worthy of a look at some of the fine pieces of history.
Peter T — Google review
If you're not afraid of heights you definitely should go see this! The views are beautiful!! The clock mechanism as you make your way up is so freaking cool to look at. Don't get stuck inside when the bells ring! My wife counted 27 flights of stairs to the top. There's not an elevator.
Rhachel B — Google review
So close to the port our cruise docked that we walked to get here. We waited til 12 noon to see the display on the clock tower. There were so many people waiting. It was a music and some movements from the tower display. A bit underwhelming, there was no story behind the presentation, some sound effects like the cockerel but no story telling. The church itself was ok but can be hectic once the presentation was over and everyone went inside the church. The shop nearby was tiny but the surrounding souvineer shops and restaurants were packed with tourists.

The great clock of Messina:The bell tower of the Cathedral of Messina is 60 m high and contains the biggest and the most complex mechanical and astronomical clock in the world. Designed by the firm Ungerer of Strasbourg for the Archbishop at the time, Mons. Angelo Paino, the clock was inaugurated on August 13th, 1933. At noon a complex system of counterweights, leverages and gears, determines the movements of the 54 gilded bronze statues located in the façade overlooking the square. One can climb the tower (5€) for an wonderful view of Messina
Xinli H — Google review
Lot’s of steps but worthy since it give you an amazing 360 degrees view of the city!
Pablo — Google review
Must’ve the noon time show . The square was full of onlookers. Takes 10 minutes for the show. There are. Icing parts to the tower almost 100 years old. Nice surprise to view
Michael C — Google review
This place is old and not maintained well. Messina in general needs attention. If you are here on a cruise, no need to spend time in Messina (in my opinion). Taormina is an amazing city near by.
Sam Z — Google review
Amazing mechanical tower that chimes and plays music at noon for about 10 minutes. One of a kind

Churches & Cathedrals
Basilica Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta, also known as Saint Mary's Cathedral, is a Catholic cathedral with a rich history dating back to the 9th century. The unique architecture of the church reflects an eclectic mix of styles due to its construction using material from the Temple of Hera Lacinia. The cathedral features a remarkable astronomical clock with bronze statues that move at noontime.
Beautiful Catholic Cathedral and Clock Tower housing the Messina astronomical clock, the largest astronomical clock in the world. The Cathedral Museum displays beautiful religious artifacts, some dating from the 10th century. Climbing the stairs to the top of the Clock Tower past the large moving statues and bells rewards one with fantastic views of the surrounding neighbourhood.
Brandon P — Google review
Ah this was a highlight at noon when the astronomical clock plays, there were over a 1000 people standing for the full 12 min,, what a wonderful sight and sound very close to the cruise terminal, definitely a must see. Loved the atmosphere
Brian B — Google review
During my visits to Rome and Istanbul, I saw many churches, but this one easily measures up. Influenced by Byzantine style and reflecting traces of many cultures, it’s a truly captivating structure. When you go, don’t forget to light a candle and take a photo from the view by the nearby clock tower.
Emirhan S — Google review
Marvelous cathedral worth visiting at noon for the clock tower show. Nice inside too.
Tom G — Google review
The world's largest mechanical clock. At 12:00 noon everyday, this clock comes to life. People move, a lion roars, a rooster crows and a building appears in a picture. We walked the city, ate at a couple of restaurants and bought souvenirs at local shops.
Steve R — Google review
Chill bell tower with giant gears on different floors. This place was not very crowded. The church was pretty and the museum had many pretty items.
Josh C — Google review
This was unexpected and a highlight of our time in Messina. I was not familiar with this church and bell tower and delighted to see and hear the bells and ave Maria at noon. A must see.

Chiesa Santissima Annunziata dei Catalani

Mentioned on

Catholic church
Sights & Landmarks
Chiesa Santissima Annunziata dei Catalani is a significant church in Messina, known for its rich history and unique architecture. It stands as the sole structure to have survived the 1908 earthquake, although it suffered damage during World War II. Dating back to the 12th century under Norman rule, this church showcases a blend of influences including Arab, Byzantine, and Roman elements.
This is a beautiful building that is a must see in Messina. The building was built on the site of the pagan temple of Neptune, and from an architectural point of view, it is a building in the Byzantine orthodox style. You can basically find the same style in early medieval buildings in Jerusalem or Bethlehem. The temple has been perfectly preserved and has survived, almost in its original form, many wars, the invasion and departure of conquerors, the advent of various religions, and the departure of various historical events. I was wonderfully surprised by the extraordinary architecture of the temple.

The Santissima Annunziata dei Catalani church in Messina is one of the few buildings to have survived the devastating earthquake of 1908. Built between the 12th and 13th centuries on the ruins of the Temple of Poseidon, it combines Norman, Byzantine, Arab and Roman styles. The apse is remarkably well-preserved and is located three meters below the current street level. The church exudes silence and historical depth, and symbolically bears witness to the multicultural heritage of the city.
John D — Google review
What a beautiful church! I wish it had been open when I visited. But still it is located in the city center so definitely worth a visit.
Lucas P — Google review
Overlooked norman era church mixing romanesque and moorish styles. Interior seemed not open for visitors
Lucian P — Google review
It can’t believable but it’s a Church. The look is very different because it has a Norman_Arab style. They adopted this style from Islamic time.
Homa — Google review
Walking around the city of Messina without map, we stumbled upon this different-looking building so we went down to see what it had to offer us. It IS a church!!! It is rich in history (just google it, thanks :-) ) but to see it in person is magnificent! For someone who is keen on architecture, this is a good study!
Marilou T — Google review

It offers stunning panoramic views of the harbor and Calabria. Additionally, there is a war memorial located nearby that serves as a peaceful tribute to Italian soldiers who lost their lives during World War II's allied attack on Messina.
Really worth the visit. Make sure to get the guided audio tour

War memorial and a beautiful church. Bit of a struggle to walk from the port but it is a short walk. They don't open till 9.45am am. While there is no fee for downstairs there is €5 entrance fee for upstairs. Don't waste your money there is nothing upstairs that you have not seen already downstairs.
Arul S — Google review
Amazing building, spectacular views, unsure why, but no access when I went on a Tuesday morning
Carley O — Google review
If you ever visit Messina, make sure to stop by this church — it has an amazing view of the whole city and the Duomo. While you’re inside, take a closer look at the paintings to the right of the pulpit; they’re really worth seeing.
Emirhan S — Google review
Well worth the climb up the hill (or do by tour bus or cab). Views over tge city are great. 5euro entry fee. A shame there is not more info boards inside to explain fully the building & its decoration. The look down into the crypt is interesting. Small museum inside Bell tower but very basic & dark. Around the back & under is the free crypt - honouring many war dead across the 2 WW"s. Very sombre area. Very interesting walk back down to the town via Sanctuary of Montalto (great view point).
Peter E — Google review
Wow!!! This beautifully ornate war memorial is a must see in Messina! If your lucky enough to have Marcello walk you through ( war veteran who volunteers there) and explain all the details and the meanings and symbolism it will give you chills. Gorgeous views and architecture. Worth it to go in! Enjoy!
Raquel M — Google review
It not a church. they charge 5euros per person for some weird paintings. There is nothing church like inside. Felt more like a cover charge to a private cover-up to what they are calling a temple. Not worth the visit. And definitely not worth the walk from the cruise port. Dont do it.

Was closed when I visited. Below the church was open but it serves as a burial chamber. The place has a great view of Messina.

Fontana di Nettuno, also known as Neptune Fountain, is a 16th-century masterpiece located in Messina's city center. This iconic landmark depicts the sea god Neptune caught between the mythical monsters Scylla and Charybdis. The fountain is a symbol of the city's rich history and features intricate details that capture the attention of visitors. Surrounded by a park, it offers a beautiful setting for leisurely walks and provides stunning views of the nearby port.
Very beautiful and well-groomed, it stands opposite the Strait of Messina. Scylla and Charybdis frame it, depicting two women with monstrous bodies. Poseidon gazes at the sea and calms its waters. The surrounding greenery could be more carefully tended, but the result is very beautiful.
John D — Google review
The fountain is aesthetically pleasing. However, it was not operational during our visit. The park is well-maintained and offers seating with a view of the harbor.
Aznin A — Google review
The fiuntain is ok. The plumbing has been updated in a very non-ascetic way. Frankly, it's not worth the 10 min walk unless you just want some steps in for the day. If you bliw the picture up, you'll notice the toilet float for automatic refilling, I assume. The sculpture is fine, the plumbing very unclassy

10 Euro per person. Nice chairs w/ an umbrella. Rocky beach, w/ a menu via QR code. There is a service fee when ordering fyi. Water is cold, be sure to bring a towel and water shoes if you got them.
Derreck — Google review
If you see 5 stars rating, that's probably an owner's friends, or family. Terrible food, terrible coffee, service is very bad and if you want to bring your own water to a beach it's forbidden! You need to buy an expensive bottle of water at a bar, and service is so bad! After we told that to them, we ordered a sandwich and for revenge we get no washed lettuce and torn arugula! So I strongly recommend to avoid this place, it's dirty, it's disgusting and health hazard!
Petar P — Google review
Terrible customer service. Very sketchy. No clear rule or age. Make us pay and then think back and would say only children is free. And when asked what age is define as children then say just children then give a random baby age. So if you LOOK older than 8 you are considered adult… so they can make money. Recommend to go to the two beaches on each side which is free. Same water… same sand just no umbrella so bring your own. Everything is over priced. Pix #2 is the size of the over priced beach. 50m big max of beach.
Ahkia T — Google review
Port day for a cruise and we wanted somewhere just to relax by the water. This place is good. Reasonable prices for chair rental and food. Only suggestion would be if they had more options on the lunch menu.

(Translated by Google) Inside the Cathedral there is a small museum with around 400 pieces in 4 rooms divided into 2 floors, some dating back to the 10th century. The main object of the museum is the "Golden Manta", which in the Byzantine tradition is the covering studded with precious stones used to cover the sacred image of the Madonna della Lettera on the main altar of the Cathedral (still in use on the day of feast of the Saint). In about half an hour you can visit it completely. It's nothing transcendental: if you are passionate about sacred art and/or have a lot of time available, visit it, but if you're pressed for time you can skip it without major problems. Ticket cost: €5, but you can get a combined ticket with the cathedral bell tower for €7.5. In circa mezz'ora si visita completamente. Non è nulla di trascendentale: se siete appassionati di arte sacra e/o avete molto tempo a disposizione visitatelo, ma se siete coi minuti contati potete saltarlo senza grossi problemi. We needed a quick dinner before taking the ferry to Villa San Giovanni. Searching online we found this grill with more than positive reviews and we trusted it. Really fantastic arancini, delicious and in many variations. Fast service and really honest prices. We will definitely be back as soon as possible!Quite possibly the best arancino we had in our 10 day tour in Sicily!
John D — Google review
Not sure why it is so hyped, probably because of very low prices. From a taste of it the sauces used are industrially made - uniform, salty and with plain taste. Satisfying while eating, but then difficult to digest and peculiar unmissable aftertaste.
Artyom — Google review
I wouldn't choose this one again after trying it. We needed photos of the foods however no english speaking at this restaurant so we had to point at the menu. We heard so much about the Pizza in italy- and we were so excited to try it. This restaurant definitely didn't live up to even being close to my expectations -huge let down. The margarita pizza came without sauce or very little- when I tried to communicate with the waitress in english that it needed more sauce; there was a mix up and she took my entire pizza back to the kitchen. Then I waited and waited......my pizza never came back to me. We finally figured out the waitress totally forgot about it. I only wanted more sauce :( NO PIZZA HERE!!!! I ended up eating some of my wife's order and then it left a discrepancy at the time of paying which was another embarrassment. It really wasn't an experience I wanted to remember.
ADAM C — Google review
Don’t go there if you’re a tourist, you won’t be served. We just wanted to buy some tasty arancini, but apparently we’re not worthy enough. Owners actively avoided eye contact with us and were ignoring us completely. We waited in line and when it was our turn, they were behaving like we don’t exist. Five other people (locals, Italian speaking) were served before we decided to leave.
Magdalena C — Google review
Must go in Messina! Best Arancine I have tried, plenty of flavors and very very good price.
Emiliana A — Google review
These are the first arancini we've ever tried. They're better than we expected, quite good and crispy on the outside. Inside there's rice with the fillings. We ordered the original flavor - ragu and salmon. At first we thought the arancini look quite small and 1 arancino may not be enough, but it turns out after some bites, we've become quite full. All the cheese and stuff inside makes it hard for us to finish the arancini (but we did). We are light eaters though. One arancino costs 2.5e. The restaurant seems popular with tourists. At lunchtime, it's crowded. There are some tables to sit.
Trang G — Google review
Best arancini in the town. Shop is famous for it’s different taste of arancini. You can enjoy your meal inside and out. Also they have other items of food. Definitely the food worthy and the staff is also very friendly. ❤️
Samidha P — Google review
Arancini heaven. Don’t miss this popular restaurant if you crave family style Arancini. They have a huge selection. I like the four cheese. Their products are bigger than the ones we enjoyed in Palermo a few years ago. Two per person is more than enough as they are very filling. Eat them like a local by wrapping in a napkin. We went the tourist route with knife and fork. Amateurs. The service was fine with several servers speaking some English. The restaurant is very simple. This is a family place or a place for solos to grab a fast bite. We would return.

"I Ruggeri" is a boutique restaurant with a warm and inviting atmosphere, where the father-son duo runs the show. The son manages the place while his partner leads the kitchen, offering a diverse cuisine that goes beyond just seafood. The menu features dishes like tuna meatballs in sweet and sour sauce, prawn "beccafico" with pistachio, cacio e pepe with figs, and linguine with sea urchins.
Went for lunch after reading reviews and was so happy we went. Small restaurant but very nicely set out, very attentive waiting staff can get the menu in English as well. Food was fabulous best bread I have ever eaten , beautiful soufflé with fresh truffle . Pasta was amazing . We throughly enjoyed our meal here and would definitely come again if visiting Messina

The food was amazing, and so was the service! I will definitely come back here again. It was the best Italian meal I have ever had. I ordered the lobster pasta, tiramisu, local red wine, and my waiter brought me out a variety of homemade bread and shot of pistachio liqueur. The staff make me feel at home and not like a tourist. Top notch experience!! Highly recommend ❤️

Toronero - Ristorante Bisteccheria Pizzeria

$$$$affordable
Restaurant
Pizza restaurant
If you're looking for a delicious meal in a comfortable and modern setting, Toronero is the place to go. The Angus beef is top quality, and the shrooms gorgonzola sauce and baked nuts are a delicious addition. However, the space can be cramped, so be sure to book ahead.
The best pasta I‘ve ever eaten, friendly and professional stuff. Worth the price

Amazing selection of meats from all over the world. Try their delicious “braciole messinesi” and their meatballs.
George L — Google review
Everything was perfect. I went there during the weekend and for this reason I stayed on the queue for roughly 5 min until they find a free place for me. But I guessed it should be crowded always so I recommend to reserve a place in advance. The staffs were very professional and well mannered. The food is very delicious. I would like to recommend
Homa — Google review
Went for a lunch with my wife while on vacation in Sicily. Ordered 3 kinds platter of carpaccio. Truffles & mushroom pasta for my wife & aaa wagu ground meat with some greens in mushrooms gravy. Carpaccio - delicious Pasta - very tender & flavorful Meat ( ordered medium ) - came overcooked & slightly burnt greens Service - horrible From a walk in ( me dressed in a tank top, espadrilles & linen shorts; reason being of lots of walking under 85+ heat ) received an unpleasant welcome. Asked a waitress for an order and was told to give it a min while she stood by the counter looking into her iphone. I ordered a fanta and my wife - aperol spritz… 10 min later & reminder - were told that fanta is coming and aperol spritz is not available … Changed to wine … glass of wine came with a glass bottle of fanta ( no glass given ) … Overall, not easy to communicate in English ( given credit of English language menu availability ) and service quality is lacking; food is great ( if you choose the right dishes ) …
Oleg G — Google review
I had high expectations for this restaurant based on other reviews...and this restaurant exceeded my expectations. We booked a table online for 19:30, but the restaurant doesn't open until 20:00. We arrived a few minutes early and they accommodated us anyway. We ordered from the English menu and did the "taster" menu. Since the menu was a bit outdated in English, we placed our trust in the senior service person to create something similar for us. We had a SIX course meal with Brute rose champagne and explored some food choices I never would have tried on my own! Very, very pleased with the whole evening thanks to the staff!! Courses 1-4 pictured below with descriptions; courses 5 & 6 not pictured but included fresh fruit (honeydew & pineapple) and frozen lemon parfait.

Bellissimo! The scottona was amazing, quality food. This won’t be the last time I visit when I’m back in Messina. My partner had the ragu which was delicious also.

Very good value for money for real meat lovers at lunch. Steaks, T-Bones, humburgers, meatballs. Nice starter with tasty caponata and potatoes cake. 20 euro per persons approximately without wine. Tried a cassata cake for desserts, but it was pretty far from the high quality sicilian standards. Anyway good spot for a quick lunch.

Mercury

Beer hall
Mercury is a popular spot in Messina, offering a diverse selection of beers including imports and local craft brews. The menu features huge, quality burgers made with fresh local ingredients, as well as sandwiches and piadine for those craving Italian flavors. Visitors can also enjoy a great atmosphere and delicious snacks. Additionally, the place is known for its excellent ribs served with a pint of Chimay.
The beer selection is fantastic and the beer prices are ok, considering most are imported. The food is more expensive considering Messina averages, BUT it was all delicious, the portions were big and the meat was well cooked. Speaking of, they actually offer sizeable amounts of meat at a reasonable price (and sauce) , which can be tricky in Italy. Apetizers were great as well and the fries homemade.
Deathskull0001 — Google review
Service is very slow and you have to put a great effort to draw the attention of the servers. The hamburger was dry, overcooked and the meat was tasteless. The cashier did not want to split the bill and was very unpolite. I will not return.

Il Siciliano

Il Siciliano is a charming pizza restaurant located in Messina, offering a spacious and bright ambiance that reflects Sicilian traditions. The menu features a wide variety of culinary delights, including typical Sicilian dishes, national favorites, seafood specialties, slow-rising pizzas, and gourmet options. The restaurant also caters to diverse dietary needs and offers off-menu specials with fresh fish dishes. With an outdoor dining area and wheelchair-accessible facilities, Il Siciliano provides a superb dining experience for all guests.
Colorful place, amazing pizza! The atmosphere is full of Sicilian charm — warm, vibrant, and cozy. We tried a pistachio pizza with burrata and a classic one with anchovies and olives — both were absolutely delicious. The dough was perfect: soft, airy, with a beautiful char. Definitely worth a visit if you’re looking for authentic flavors and a joyful setting!
Murad Z — Google review
Well the food looked delicious from the other tables. We asked to be seated and were. We told the waitress we were ready to order and she acknowledged it. 20 minutes later we were still waiting to give our order. Never even asked us for water or alcohol. They were only half occupied. We watched other people be seated after us and receive drinks and take orders. After 20 minutes we left. Will admit the food looked wonderful but the service was pretty bad. Hope it works out better for you. That being said the rating is warranted.

Yesterday we had dinner at Il Siciliano in Messina. We were curious and didn’t know what to expect, but once we tried the food we were truly impressed.😋 Pasta with sardines: simply exceptional, both in flavor and in combinations. Beautifully presented and absolutely unforgettable. 👉 A MUST-TRY! Compliments to the chef! 👨‍🍳 Swordfish steak: rich and authentic in flavor. For those who want to experience traditional dishes with a twist, this is definitely worth trying. Il Siciliano is not just a restaurant – it’s a real journey through the true flavors of Sicily. Thank you from the heart ❤️

This is such a lovely place, amazing aesthetic. The staff is super friendly, sweet and incredibly helpful. We had two combo dishes of seafood and local vegetarian dishes. Both of them were amazing, big diversity of flavours, all prepared with care. We had their white house wine, which was also very good. The place is very clean as well. Definitely check it out if you’re in the area.
Dinko S — Google review
Tried out this location from our tour guide Chiara’s recommendation. Stuck to what was local and it was delicious! We had the parmagiana melanzane and the bruschetta traditionale (eggplant Parmesan and traditional Bruschette). Don’t go to a place known for for something and change it up. Let them make what they are good at. This place is better than the 4.3 on Google reviews. So try Il Siciliano when you come to Messina.

It's not a tourist trap and offers original dishes at reasonable prices. The seafood is fresh and delicious, while the pizza is perfect. Number One

Chophouse restaurant
If you find yourself in the vibrant heart of Messina, make sure to stop by "Number One," a contemporary eatery that beautifully marries traditional pizza with an array of antipasti and sports on TV. This welcoming spot is not just about the ambiance; it boasts exceptional quality food, particularly its meat offerings. Diners rave about their mixed starters featuring cured meats and cheeses, alongside delightful fried treats.
Mixed grill was really nice, well prepared and juicy and pistachio carbonara was flavoursome. Lovely staff, especially the girl (student from Iran, unfortunately I didn't ask for her name) she was really friendly, attentive and well spoken.

We visited this place yesterday for a lunch and were a company of three. We ordered three main dishes (pasta, chicken thye and french rib) from their lunch menu, we showed each of the dish to the waiter from their online menu. Two of the three dishes we ordered were priced incorrectly on the final bill, the one that according the menu was priced eur10 (chicken) was charged as eur18 and the rib that was eur14 according to their menu was charged as eur22!! It took us around 10-15 minutes and a very unpleasant conversation with the staff in order to force them to change the bill and charge us correctly. While the food was good, I will never come back to this place again due to the inability of the staff to acknowledge their mistake without us needing to be insisting.
TSU I — Google review
The artichokes were delicious, our waiter was nice but other staff indifferent. Our steaks were cooked well but not the best meat around. Maybe we just chose the wrong plate? The restaurant seems to be a good one. I would try it one more time and see if it was just a bad day. 🤗

I had an amazing dining experience at this chic restaurant in Messina, Sicily. The food was excellent, especially their specialty, bracioli, which was incredibly delicious. The portion sizes were generous, and I thoroughly enjoyed the abundant plates. A must-visit spot for anyone looking for a delightful culinary adventure in Messina!
Muriel K — Google review
We had a frustrating experience. We were a party of two and ordered a pizza and a meat dish but when paying for the bill, they said we had two orders of the meat dish. They claimed they gave as a double portion on the single plate that came. We had ordered specifically ONE of each (one pizza, one meat dish) but they kept claiming we ordered two. The food was tasty but we won't come back.

Stopped in for dinner and enjoyed every bite. I had the carpaccio with beef over a sushi grade rice. Amazing! I also had the pistachio carbonara, absolutely loved it! The house red was also really nice.

Oh my God. The best food I've had my entire trip. If you are in Messina, if you are near Messina, hell if you're in Italy GO HERE. This is a seafood town so your first thought I'd to pass this by, don't. You will regret it. The restaurant is connected to a butcher shop and the meat is phenomenal. I'm talking melt in your mouth. The pasta is divine. The charcuterie is next level. Service is fantastic. Amazing outdoor seating and see everything type of place. Really the greatest food. I would come back to Messina just for this place

Good pizza for a decent price. They don't have enough waiters for the number of tables. There was a big group upstairs and most of the tables downstairs were taken. The waiters could not handle it all. Everything took too long.

Restaurant
Located on the northern coast of the city, Bellavista offers a stunning view of the Straits of Messina and Calabria. During warm seasons, guests can dine right by the sea. The restaurant specializes in seafood dishes, including raw fish appetizers, pasta with sea urchins, and a variety of fresh fish prepared to order. The family-owned establishment combines local and marine culinary traditions with modern presentation.
From the phone booking to the actual dinner it was undoubtedly a superb experience. Service is very attentive and not intrusive. Extensive and very well selected wine list; the sommelier was at hand with knowledge and advice. Idyllic setting facing Mainland Italy, the Strait of Messina and the sound of the waves lapping against the shore. Dreamy! Food was well presented and every course had the freshest ingredients. Special requests were met with discretion and no hesitation; the chef was very understanding and accommodating. Thank you. It will be on our map for future reference. Well done 👏
Antonio M — Google review
The restaurant Bellavista offers excellent views on the straight of Messina and the close coastline of Calabria. There is an indoor and an outdoor area which is both very pleasant. The menu offers a good choice of antipasti (appetizers), primi (first dishes), and secondi (main courses). In addition, the wine list covers a great selection of regional and national wines at decent prices. The food was very fresh, great in preparation, and very tasty. Our raw fish was very fresh, and the selection of different types of fish was excellent. The prices may be higher than in other places but adequate to the quality, and the quantity served. The service was kind and courteous. Like any of my reviews, of course, this review is being made related to the type of restaurant, the restaurant's gastronomic objective, and the overall context. I recommend this restaurant for the great food and stunning views.

Ristorante Bellavista, excellent views on the straight of Messina and the close coastline of Calabria. There is an indoor and an outdoor area. We tried 2 types of pastas all which were excellent. However the starter (chef’s surprise) was a let down. The fish was also fresh. Service was friendly but not that efficient.

Today I went with two friends, we tried a mixed raw fish and seafood. After that the owner approached and sent us other dishes such as octopus and fish specialty of the house. At the end we share a grilled white fish and vegetables. All the dishes were one better than the other. Exelent restaurant.

Good food, excellent view and scenery. A glass of white wine was 5 € and very nice. High class but worth a trip.
Benjamin G — Google review
Excellent food, excellent service excellent view. Top notch. What else is there to say?
Vasilios K — Google review
The view is unbeatable: right by the water. You can hear the sea breaking on the beach which is wonderful. The side itself is quite minimalistic and clean and service is cordial and efficient. I always eat the raw food plate or a tuna tartare which is always super fresh. I'd also recommend eating the grilled swordfish since it a stroke of the area. Their risotto with seafood is outstanding. In terms of desserts, if you are a fan of chocolate ice cream, you should order the tartufo. I could eat three in a row. I keep going back to this place every time I'm in town because it's that good. On the pricey side.

Delicious meals one can enjoy here. Friendly service. They have an English menu available. Pizzas are thin crust but soft. Very good quality and quite filling! Four of us couldn't finish 3 pizzas. The Margherita pizza is close to what they make in Naples. Good quality ingredients overall.

We were looking for a place to eat during our first trip to Messina. We wanted something else after a couple of days of eating pizza. It looks like a nice place. Soup was our favourite, as for the salad and a burger it was just average. For some reason we got decaf coffees (noticed on the receipt after I paid) Worth trying if you’re nearby.

Being friendly isn’t enough. The waitress was nice, but clearly overwhelmed. She didn’t write down my order, came back five minutes later to ask again — and still managed to forget it. Transportation in Messina

Getting around Messina can be a little daunting if you’re new here. We can help list some of the major public transportation methods if you don’t want to rely on a car.

Nearby airports

Vincenzo Bellini Catania Airport

International airport
Airport
Vincenzo Bellini Catania Airport is a major hub for both domestic and international flights, serving the southern and eastern regions of Sicily. Located just 7km southwest of the city center, it offers convenient access to the beautiful region of Catania. The airport provides transportation options such as the Alibus service, connecting travelers to the city center.
My 5 star review goes to the staff in particular, the facilitators for special assistance. There is a guy by the name of either Alberto or Alfredo... He treated my mother like a diamond. His English is excellent. He has amazing people skills. We spoke of Portugal. I even invited him to visit us next time....he exells in PR, very well spoken and really made a stressful day so much lighter. The airport itself can be a tad confusing but the staff definitely compensate for this. This beautiful gentleman who works for special assistance could do with a promotion. And not just a glorified title but also his Salary. He was training new collegues while tending to my mother. His patience and leadership skills are rare to come by in today's scary society. If the airport administration is reading this, please go and commend this charismatic guy!
Jasmine G — Google review
Arrival hall doesn’t show any departure flights. Just go to a random departure floor upstairs to find any departure info, and if you are in terminal A and need to go to terminal C, you must go to the ground floor and go outside again. There is no duty free shops in terminal C, and only 3 toilets for women for entire terminal C. The only store is a small cafe with very few selections of food souvenirs. Very pity to miss the chance of earning tourist’s money.
L C — Google review
Very bad airport. The space is very very small and you can’t go to the toilet because you need to wait more than 30 minutes to get in, you don’t have seats to wait your plane.. it’s really chaotic and I didn’t had good experience here. For example, during the checking, there is a lot of place to seat but you can’t because at the same time different companies were doing the plain checkin. This airport need to improve the service for tourist experience
Daiana C — Google review
My first 1-star review ever for this abomination of an airport. From the highway, the roads and signage to the airport are scant and hard to follow. Rental car return areas are very difficult to find, with each provider scattered randomly along the typical Sicilian narrow 'roadways' shared with people walking with luggage, children, strollers, wheelchairs, from randomly located parking lots, rental lots, drop off points, etc. The signage for the rental car return provider has logos too small to see unless you're standing in front of it waiting to get hit by vehicles attempting to navigate, drive and avoid hitting pedestrians. When you finally find the rental car return lot for your company, locating a spot can be challenging. The quick return 'kiosk' (Avis) asks for a QR code, but there's no QR code on your key fob tag. Attendants may or may not be present at the desk. Walking from the rental lot (no shuttle of course) is equally circuitous and dangerous. The route is not marked in any way, requiring a maze of busy street, tiny walkways, steps, curbside, etc. A person with any disability whatsoever would be unlikely to survive this cluster of a route simply to get to Concourse A. Once inside the terminal, a sea of people with waves of movement seemingly without clear intent as to where theyre headed. The check-in desks are in the same general area as the lines for the security checkpoint right smack in the middle of everything else. Once through the single file line through security, one bright spot was there were a good assortment of food vendors adjacent to gates 7-17, although only one with coffee. Our family members at higher number gates reported only a single vendor of any kind at gates 18 and above. The gate areas are very crowded and seats are difficult to find. For the handicapped or anyone that has difficult with stairs, I did not see an elevator anywhere. Even if there was an elevator serving the upper floor, anyone/everyone is likely to encounter stairs at some point, with no other options. Then...lines for the gate are crowded, tight with a lot of pointless gathering of people that could not find seats in the gate areas and have no choice but to stand around while the movement through the general gate areas slinks their way through the masses. Once through the gate check in, down the ramp leads NOT to an airplane, but to 4 flights of stairs to a shuttle that, once crammed with passengers, heads off to your airplane, somewhere on the vast tarmac. When we arrived at the plane, there were more steps up to the plane, however, they kept us IN the shuttlebus for 20 minutes with no explanation, while we sweated our shirts off breathing the diesel exhaust. Then, apparently there was an issue with the plane, but there was no announcement as the shuttle bus turned back around towards the gate, sat below the stairway for 15 minutes then we had to go back up the 4 flights of stairs back up to the ramp where we exited back to the gate area wondering just what the heck is going to happen... An hour passes... departure board indicates the flight has boarded and boarding is closed... another hour passes, no announcement regarding the flight. I wait in a line of people at the desk, all with the same question... no answer except they're still working on the plane. Because they haven't canceled the flight, we can't re-book another flight back to the U.S...an ambiguous holding pattern. Calling the partner airline was no help as the flight is not canceled. No telling whether we're getting out of Catania today. I hope we can at least get to Frankfurt where our chance of getting a flight back to the U.S. are likely greater than this 3rd world airport. Oh, and all of the urinals in the men's bathroom were closed. Update... mass of people move toward the gate, still no announcement about the flight, or boarding. Standing in the cattle maze, no apparent zone boarding order at the moment. No attendants at the desk. Gate sign changes to another destination...

We arrived around midnight and found the airport quite small and easy to navigate. Check-in was fast, which was a plus, but there aren't many places to sit or rest comfortably — definitely not ideal for spending the night. There were only a few shops open, and the outside of the building isn’t particularly attractive. If you're arriving late or have a long layover, I’d recommend booking a nearby hotel instead of staying at the airport. It's functional for quick arrivals and departures, but not a place to linger.

❗ I recommend allowing extra time and arriving early at Catania Airport, especially if you’re flying with Ryanair and need to check in a bag. We waited well over an hour just to drop off our luggage. Security, on the other hand, was fairly quick and smooth. The airport itself is quite small and seems to struggle with the number of passengers it handles. Surprisingly, the lounge was better than expected.

Horrible airport in all fronts! The route to get to the airport is scarily bad! A pretty sketchy neighborhood, with lots of tight streets and horrible drivers! A total chaos! The airport terminal looked more like a bus terminal! No signs in English!! And the WiFi did not work anywhere in the entire airport! So disappointing and frustrating!

Mediocre airport. Not much to rave about. Could be better adapted to older people and people in wheelchairs as some toilets are downstairs without elevators.

Lamezia Terme International Airport

International airport
Airport
Lamezia Terme International Airport (SUF) is the main international airport in Calabria, Italy. It offers affordable direct flights from various European destinations and serves as a convenient entry point for travelers visiting the region. The airport provides connections to other parts of Italy and Europe, making it easily accessible for visitors. Travelers can reach the airport by car, taxi, or bus from the central station, with the bus being a cost-effective option.
Very nice airport and quite modern in the departures side. Nice coffee and snacks. I don’t understand the negative reviews.

Lamezia Terme airport is a very small airport. From the plane to the international arrivals was by bus and took a couple of minutes. Even though there were two staff members on passport control, we went through fairly quickly as we were the only plane that had landed. There is only one carousel in the international arrivals terminal, and it didn't take that long for our luggage to arrive. It then took us about 5 minutes to walk to our coach. When we returned to fly home, the coach dropped us right outside the departure terminal. We were escorted to the checkin by a TUI guide, and the three desks for our flight processed the coach full of passengers with luggage very quickly. There are a few shops in the departures area before you go through security. Security had 3 scanners operating and took us only a few minutes to go through. Once through security there are a few more shops, cafes, etc and as usual at airports prices are more expensive than outside. We flew from gate 8. There are two gates together (7&8). Once you go through security, you need to queue up and wait for passport control to open. We used the self-service scanner for our passport check and have our photograph taken. You then go to a security officer to have our passport stamped. The depart lounge is way too small, even for one plane. With two planes taking off close together, there was no room to sit unless you went through passport control as soon as it opened. The bus journey to our plane took us less than 1 minute. In summary, Lamezia Terme airport is small, very clean, and efficient. However, what lets it down is the lack of seating in the departure lounge.

Well connected to the train station, small but practical, some shops of souvenirs a a cafeteria / bakery inside. Public bus number 90 outside 3euros to train station for a 5min trip. Bus may leave stations with some delay due to passengers boarding

Small and functional airport, with all expected services available. Well connect with train station by regular shuttle with price included in your train ticket, if you traveling further by train. Excellent position to explore Calabria with a sea side of incredible beauty, it worth to travel there.

Terrible, terrible experience at this airport. Staff were incredibly rude and unprofessional — there was absolutely no sense of customer service. Our 6 checked bags were somehow not loaded onto the plane for a short 1 hour 15 minute flight from Lamezia Terme (SUF) to Rome (FCO). We still cannot understand what happened. It took three full days to get our luggages back, after an incredibly stressful and exhausting ordeal filled with worry, frustration, and uncertainty. We also handed over the keys to our luggage locks after the agent insisted we needed to. However, the keys were not returned to us when we received our luggage. This should never happen. A serious lack of training and accountability. This is not the first time we have traveled to this airport, and we expected way better service than what we received. Customer service has significantly deteriorated over the years and is now non-existent. Travelers are paying the price. Travelers deserve better than this.

The staff at this airport were completely unprofessional and rude. Their behavior was unacceptable and made my experience at the airport extremely unpleasant. The airport needs to take immediate action to address this issue and provide better training for its staff to ensure a more pleasant experience for travelers.

The Staff at the security gates are rude, bored and lazy. They are not interested in working. They just stand around drinking coffee, eating biscuits and chit chatting. You can take everything with you such as scissors and Liquids over 200ml. They don't even check. The airport itself is very old and the departure gates are in a TENT! There is no air conditioning and I'm shocked that Italy calls this an airport! It's like something from the 3rd world.

Usual nonsense from Ryanair. Ram you into a super hot holding area then leave you there for ages. Airport is tiny and Mickley mouse in its operations and Ryanair rubber stamp how bad it is. Shocking
