Likes: - from Toyama City, about 30 mins by car, easy drive, almost straight road all the way, lots of parking available - from Toyama Station, train options - Shinkansen 26mins ¥2730 OR local trains x2 transfers ¥720 1hr 27min+on foot 5mins - supposedly the biggest Aeon Mall in Hokuriku with 200 shops in 2 buildings - bright, spacious with shops line up on both sides - like the speciality shops; never fail to find good gift items here - fun to browse, especially on dreary Winter days Dislikes: - very little English signage in mall and in each shop; cannot figure out sales promotions eg have to buy 2 items to get 50% discount

every salesperson is nice here. However the tax-free policy here is chaos. Even the flyers from the information center is wrong. Very poor tax-free service

It's a pretty solid mall, just like any other mall there are. The atmosphere is not chaotic on a Friday night. I went here to check out their Uniqlo and Daiso, and I'm pretty satisfied!

We’ve got it all for you!!! Just ten minute walk from ShinTakaoka station or Takaoka Shinkansen station. A complete variety of shopping experience from arched, restaurant, movie, market and shop till you drop. Usually busy on weekends and during lunch time as student and workers drop here to eat and spare some time. They added an annex which extend and make it more fun to experience and more shopping stall to choose. Overall a nice fun Mall at the heart of Takaoka.

A very classic scene of Doraemon, and perfect for fans. However the park is only with this part having such theme, other than that would be a common local park, with many autumn leaves and stunning view during sunset. Visited by the end of Nov. Plenty of parking places

Zuiryu-ji Temple, located in Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture, is a long-standing Buddhist temple with a rich history. Built by Maeda Toshitsune, it belongs to the Soto school of Zen Buddhism and was constructed to offer prayers for the repose of his brother's soul. The temple complex includes two prayer halls and peaceful gardens adorned with statues of deities.
Magnificent temple with expansive grounds and interesting architecture that maintains it's tranquility to visitors and tourists alike. Simply purchase your tickets at the entrance and you'll have a great time soaking in the atmosphere as you learn a little more about the temple grounds and their mode of worship.

Visitors have the unique opportunity to join a guided tour led by Buddhist monks, offering fascinating insights into the temple’s spiritual and historical background. For just 500 yen, you can enjoy a cup of traditional Japanese tea paired with delicate local sweets, all while taking in a breathtaking view from the temple grounds. It’s a place that invites peace, reflection, and appreciation for Japanese culture — highly recommended for anyone seeking a meaningful and memorable experience.

Zuiryu-ji, a national treasure and one of Japan’s finest Zen temples, is even more breathtaking in winter. With its majestic wooden architecture blanketed in snow, the temple takes on a serene, almost otherworldly beauty that makes it a must-visit in Takaoka. Built in the early Edo period by the Maeda clan to honor Maeda Toshinaga, Zuiryu-ji is a masterpiece of Soto Zen Buddhist architecture. The layout is perfectly symmetrical, with the Sanmon (main gate), Butsuden (Buddha Hall), and Hatto (Dharma Hall) aligned in a straight path, showcasing the temple’s disciplined aesthetic. During winter, the contrast of dark wooden beams against the white snow creates a picture-perfect scene, enhancing the temple’s quiet, meditative atmosphere. Despite the cold, visiting in winter has its perks—fewer crowds, a peaceful ambiance, and the rare chance to see this historic landmark in a different light. The stone pathways and courtyards covered in fresh snow make for stunning photography, especially in the early morning. The shoji (paper sliding doors) and wooden corridors add to the charm, giving visitors a true sense of Zen tranquility. If you’re in Takaoka during winter, Zuiryu-ji is an unforgettable experience, offering a glimpse into Japan’s rich history and spiritual beauty. Don’t forget to bring warm shoes, as the temple grounds can get icy!

Great atmosphere and power spot. Architecture, structure of the buildings are amazing. Huge space and recommend to talk a walk slowly watching all the buildings slowly. Garden highlights the style of typical Zen temples. Entrance ¥500 and good enough free car parking. No rush. There is a small snack shop near the ticket counter which is good for having a break.

A national treasure that is all for you. This temple is the typical example of the Edo period zen Buddhist temple. The construction using wooden structures, elevated slightly off the ground with tiled roofs and sliding doors. Free parking was available at the parking lot adjacent to the temple. Entrance fee was ¥500 per adult. There were not many tourists visiting the temple making it easier to enjoy the tranquility and perform meditation without unnecessary disturbances.
Martlet — Google review
Zuiryuji is an impressive complex that can be visited regardless of the weather. You can experience the temple while walking down its long halls or outside and get good results either way. It is calming in a very Soto Zen way and I found myself quite content even though rain usually takes me right out of the temple hopping mood. Also it was built by Maeda Toshitsune which is cool by itself. This temple would not look out of place in Nara or Kamakura. Great Zen Temple overall.

The Takaoka Great Buddha, also known as Daibutsu, is a magnificent and imposing bronze statue located in the Daibutsuji Temple in Takaoka City, Toyama. Standing at 15.85 meters tall and weighing 65 tons, it is among the largest Buddha statues in Japan. The monument's history dates back to 1745 and was originally made of wood before being reconstructed in bronze in 1933.
Stumbling around town we walked past a bunch of buildings and suddenly this great Buddha sat before us! What a pleasant surprise in the heart of the city. We were walking to the park and behold... This guy is huge!

I went to Takaoka just to see the Great Buddha. The serenity and silence is so emotional. The grounds are immaculate. While this is not the original Great Buddha, it's still a sight to see. I made an offering and lit incense

The Takaoka Great Buddha is one of Japan’s most impressive Buddha statues and a must-see landmark in Takaoka. Standing at 15.85 meters, this serene and beautifully crafted bronze statue is often called one of Japan’s three great Buddhas, alongside those in Nara and Kamakura. What sets the Takaoka Daibutsu apart is its detailed craftsmanship—it was cast using the city’s renowned metalworking techniques, which have been a part of Takaoka’s heritage for centuries. The current bronze statue, completed in 1933, replaced an earlier wooden version that had been lost to fire multiple times. Despite its relatively modern construction, it retains a deep sense of history and spiritual significance. Visitors can enter the small hall beneath the statue, which houses Buddhist artifacts and historical displays about the statue’s creation and past versions. The peaceful atmosphere makes it a great spot for quiet reflection.

Imizu Shrine is situated within the picturesque Takaoka Castle Park and is known for its serene atmosphere and historical significance. Visitors can explore the shrine's grounds and even receive a goshuin stamp, adding to the spiritual experience. The shrine holds cultural importance, with events such as the Urayasu dance being dedicated by shrine maidens. Additionally, it is believed to be a power spot, attracting visitors seeking blessings for a rich harvest and industrial development.
Imizu Shrine, nestled within the serene Takaoka Kojo Park, is a beautiful and historically significant Shinto shrine. As the Ichinomiya (highest-ranked shrine) of the old Etchu Province, it carries deep spiritual importance and is a peaceful retreat from the city’s hustle. One of the highlights of visiting Imizu Shrine is its location within Takaoka Kojo Park, the site of the former Takaoka Castle. The park itself is a great place for a leisurely stroll, featuring moats, seasonal flowers, and a tranquil atmosphere.

(Translated by Google) It's pronounced Imizu Shrine. Takaoka has a castle (or castle ruins) (I only knew about Zuiryuji Temple and the Great Buddha; I thought it was a town of castings), a moat, and Imizu Shrine is enshrined within the grounds. It's within walking distance from the station. Go through the arcade of Otabaya-dori (which seems more deserted every time I come here), pass in front of the Takaoka Great Buddha, continue straight north, and go down a little. You'll see the torii gate of Imizu Shrine, and you can enter straight from the main approach. It's a really simple route. Speaking of Imizu, until nearly half a century ago, the Toyama Chiho Railway's Imizu Line, a kind of streetcar, ran through the area. Even earlier, this line connected Takaoka via Shinminato, via Toyama New Port, which is now separated by the port. Shinminato City was formerly called Imizu City, and while geographically it's roughly halfway between Toyama and Takaoka, it's somewhat closer to Takaoka. There was a time when it was possible to travel between Takaoka Station and Toyama Station from Fushiki/Yoneshimaguchi Station using only the subway and Kaetsuno Railway without changing trains. The area around the Imizu Line was apparently called the Imizu region, and the name itself apparently originated from Imizu Shrine (Iyazu). I've long wondered why Imizu Shrine is called "Imizu" even though it's located in Takaoka, and this is apparently the origin of the shrine's history. The main shrine building faces south with its back to the north, and there's a gift shop on the left side of the building. Here, a list of gifts is well organized and displayed, and many other shrines in Toyama Prefecture are well versed in this sales method. The worship hall's structure is unique, with a prayer space in front of the offering box, separated by a glass door, allowing visitors to approach the altar more closely. A vermilion-lacquered bridge called Komaharu Bridge spans the moat leading to the main hall of Imizu Shrine. Once you cross this bridge, you'll find the main building of Takaoka City's Gokoku Shrine, facing west, on your right. It's not unusual for a prefecture to have two Gokoku Shrines, but Imizu Shrine also handles the ceremonies at Takaoka's Gokoku Shrine. Charms and stamps are also sold at the Imizu Shrine gift shop. The Imizu Shrine parking lot extends onto the pedestrian path right before the shrine's main gate, then detours west past the gate and enters the Furushiro Park area. It's extremely dangerous if you don't drive carefully. They offer a variety of original charms called "Ichimamori" (sack charms). Takaoka's old town is quite far from both the Shinkansen station and the Hokuriku Expressway IC, and the city clings to Takaoka Station on the old Hokuriku Main Line along with the Manyo Line, so it is quiet and peaceful, but it could use a little more tourism power.

(Translated by Google) Imizu Shrine is located on the site of the main keep in Takaoka Castle Park. It is the only Ichinomiya shrine in Echigo Province built on the site of a castle. Originally founded on Mount Nijo before the Nara period, it has long been revered as Nijo Daigongen, a syncretic Shinto-Buddhist shrine. In the Meiji period, the Shinto-Buddhist separation order designated the enshrined deity as Ninigi-no-Mikoto, the descendant of the heavenly grandson. Later, when the shrine was relocated to the site of Takaoka Castle's main keep due to limited shrine land, the people of Nijo Village were outraged, crying over the portable shrine and hiding the sacred object. The parishioners subsequently built Nijo Imizu Shrine on the former site. Takaoka Castle, where Imizu Shrine currently stands, was built by Maeda Toshinaga, the first lord of the Kaga domain and known as the founder of Takaoka, and its layout (design) was by Todo Takatora, a master of castle construction. Although the castle was abandoned in the early Edo period due to the One Castle per Province Law, it is said to have secretly functioned as a military base, with rice storehouses and other facilities installed. The moat surrounding the Honmaru and Ninomaru is very large, giving a real sense of the defensive functions of a medieval castle. Also in Kojo Park is Takaoka Gokoku Shrine, which enshrines war dead from Takaoka City. History buffs will love visiting two shrines while touring one of Japan's 100 most famous castles. Takaoka Kojo Park is also an anime pilgrimage site, as it is depicted in the anime "Yuru Yuri," which is set in Takaoka City. The goshuin stamp (temple seal) bears the symbol of a snake, which is the zodiac sign for this year. You can also get the Gokoku Shrine stamp here. I ordered two bowls of udon noodles, and asked them to put them on a tray because the bowls were too hot to hold. The female waitress placed the bowls, spilling the udon soup, and placed the other bowl on the tray, spilling the soup over the udon. She said "Oh, sorry." I wanted them to make it again, but this restaurant is no good, and I don't want to come here again. It's too sloppy, and the plates for the tempura that are placed there are still dirty and not cleaned.

Izakaya restaurant
Nestled in the heart of Takamachi, Jindaiko is a charming izakaya that has been delighting locals and visitors alike for decades. This quaint tavern offers an extensive menu filled with familiar izakaya favorites, making it a go-to spot for those craving authentic Japanese cuisine. Diners rave about the delectable sashimi and unique stone-grilled squid, which never fails to impress first-timers.
Nice traditional decor

(Translated by Google) I will definitely order the B-class gourmet Totomaru here! The sashimi is delicious, and people who see stone-grilled squid for the first time get excited. Pickled red turnips are also addictive! I always order the beef tendon stew, myoga dengaku, and konjac dengaku, but my recommendation this time of year is the fried horse mackerel! The meat is thick and large, making it satisfying to eat. (Translated by Google) Perhaps because there aren't many staff members, the pace at which the food comes out is slow. The food has an original menu, but nothing particularly noteworthy. It's no different from a franchise izakaya. The portions are generally small. Perhaps this is due to the effects of rising prices. The restaurant is full of customers, giving the impression of being lively. The design of the restaurant building also has a typical izakaya feel. Overall, I'd rate it three stars. (Translated by Google) This izakaya is right in the middle of Takamachi 🏮 It's been around for decades. Although we had made a reservation, it was incredibly busy because it was the first day of the holidays, and many items were sold out. The menu is extensive, both on the main menu and today's specials. They also have a great selection of sake. However, due to the limited wait staff, there was a slight lag. It was nearly full, and perhaps because they were busy, the food was slow to come, and several other customers seemed annoyed. To be honest, I popped in at a random restaurant because I was struggling for dinner due to a lot of days off, but the food was actually pretty good. Conversely, is it hard to find bad seafood in Toyama? (lol) The yellowtail was fatty and delicious, even though it wasn't winter yellowtail. They were sold out of hairy crab. 😞 Maybe it's a little pricey? Nestled in Takaoka, Daijutei is a charming Western-style restaurant with a rich history dating back to 1948. After a brief hiatus, it reopened its doors in 2015 and has since become a beloved dining destination. The spacious interior features an open kitchen where diners can witness the culinary magic unfold. Known for its diverse menu, Daijutei excels in serving delectable dishes that highlight premium wagyu beef and mouthwatering desserts.

Delicious Japanese-western cuisine. Their set menus consist of a salad, soup, main, rice/bread and drink. The restaurant is located on the second floor of a nondescript building. Do note that the ventilation system is poor, so you might leave smelling like a meat patty.

A set that includes minced meat cutlet, 50g steak, minced meat cutlet, and gratin. I forgot to take a photo, but you can also add garlic rice for 250 yen. The hamburger is teppanyaki, and I will upload a video of it, but it was soft and juicy, and I felt happy when I ate it with the demi-glace sauce. The shop also has a nice atmosphere. Please stop by when you go to Takaoka. Thank you for the meal. (Translated by Google) The reviews and photos looked good, so I used it to entertain an out-of-town friend, and I had lunch B. Lunch B was a 50g steak (plus two minced meat cutlets and a mini gratin), so two pieces of steak came out, but one was a lump that couldn't be chewed. It's probably because they can't afford to throw away that part. I don't know if they intentionally combine pieces of meat that are too hard to chew and pieces of soft meat to avoid wasting such parts, or if it's just that sometimes some people get the wrong cut, but those parts I thought it would be nice if they would pound it more or reuse it in beef stew or something so that I could enjoy that part as well. The reason why I gave such a harsh review is because it's not a cheap lunch. Serious steak sets start at around 4,000 yen. It may be because lunch A and B are cheap lunches in the 2000 yen range, but it was disappointing. Other than that "slice", everything was very delicious, including the garlic rice that I ordered for an additional fee.

(Translated by Google) I don't think it would be a good idea to judge after eating other soup curries. If you're looking for spiciness, look elsewhere. I ordered mutton, but it seemed like grilled meat was added later. The vegetables are fairly large and filling, but it doesn't feel like the curry is soaked through. The amount of rice should be small. The photo is of Omeshi. Once you add the minced meat topping, the seasoning is strong, so you can enjoy it with rice. I wonder if there will be more menus like minced meat bowl with curry stew ⚪⚪. The sweets are half pudding, half gateau chocolate, and yuzu lassi. Delicious⭕. Overall, the amount is not enough for men, so it seems better to eat a little. I think it's good for women. The parking lot is small, so if you have a large vehicle, please avoid the crowded hours and find a place where you can park easily. It was my Volvo V70. I was saved because there was a light car in front of me. Is the price a little high?
