Tanabe in 3 days

If you only have 3 days to spend in Tanabe, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Tanabe is a coastal city on the Kii Peninsula best known as a main gateway to the UNESCO-listed Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trails, which weave through forests, mountains and historic shrines. The city itself offers a laid-back atmosphere with a working harbor, local markets and easy access to sandy beaches and rugged coastline. Tanabe is also one of Japan’s major producers of ume (plums), and visitors can sample plum-based foods and drinks as well as regional seafood. Traditional guesthouses, hot-spring baths and small local festivals give travelers a chance to experience everyday life in rural Wakayama.
With favorites like Matsushimaen, Shirarahama Beach, and しもじ 本宮店, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Kanpachiya and TORETORE ICHIBA so you can get the best taste of Tanabe while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Adventure World is a wildlife park located in the hills of the Shirahama resort area in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. It is a popular destination known for its giant panda exhibit, safari tours, and dolphin shows. The park covers about 800,000 square meters and features a zoo, aquarium, amusement park rides, and various shops and food concessions.
We went here during Japan’s Summer Holiday. We really enjoyed the Dolphin show and the funny Animal Show. Unfortunately the Pandas are not there anymore. But visiting the park is fun. We also went to the Safari area by walking and it’s nice. You can also ride a bus there, rent a bike or a golf cart to explore the Safari area. A recommended place to visit once you’re in Wakayama prefecture.

This place was bigger than I thought it would be! Because this place is so big, you’ll need to walk a lot. You can buy tickets at the entrance and if you walk a little bit, you’ll see a fountain with penguins swimming. You can see the animals in such a close distance but I think their habitats are too small. One thing I don’t understand is that the red panda gets a decent amount of space and the other animals live in a small space or is too populated. Other than that, the events and food are nice.
Student S — Google review
We came for the pingu smile party as it’s his 45TH bday. The dolphin show is spectacular you can tell the dolphins are close to their trainers and treated well. They even do a little dance and wakeboards with the trainers. The smoke party collab is cute and very Japanese. The only thing is the rides are paid and the penguins could use bigger homes there’s too many of them

Nice zoo and theme park setup. The marine mammal show was amazing and the staff swimming with them were so friendly and vibrant. Nice safari ride past African animals. Many animals to view. It's good value for money.
Harry H — Google review
Such a wonderful place. The setting makes it the most picturesque zoo I’ve ever been to. Nice walking path to see animals.
Beth G — Google review
I was disappointed because there was no panda in zoo . Rest all is good nice place to visit with kids for a day. Kids can see various animals and have fun rides
Vishnupriya G — Google review
Park size is not that large. Easy to walk. A lot of cute animals. Animal shows are highly recommended.
Poom P — Google review
Pretty empty on a Tuesday 11am. Nice show with the dolphins, safari was nice but quite small and most importantly no panda in sight... after asking the staff, all pandas were sent back to China in June... pretty sad about it as I paid 5300 yen entry to see them. apparently all pandas over the world were sent back to China for breeding. Wished I knew it before, so be warned. If you have kids, it's a nice theme parc. However as 30 yo couple, it's just okay. 3 stars due to deception... Sept 2025

Nestled along the stunning coastline, Sandanbeki Cave is a captivating three-tiered sea cave steeped in history and natural beauty. This remarkable site was once a secret hideout for the Kumano Navy during Japan's Heian period. As you step inside, you're greeted by an awe-inspiring ceiling adorned with ancient ripple patterns etched into the bedrock over 16 million years ago.
Super interesting sights from inside the caves. You can observe how the waves hit the cliff from a very close distance and the way it shapes the rock after so many years. There is also a beautiful shrine and a watchtower hut from the Kumano naval force that merge beautifully with the rocks and the seascape. The whole experience can last between 30mins to 40 or more depending on each person but it’s definitely worth stopping by if you’re in the area.
Erandi G — Google review
The scenery view to the ocean on a clear day is amazing. Afternoon sun highlights the cliff face. I went in Jan 2025 so it was winter 7 degrees. The wind was very strong. I did not pay to take the cave trip but read reports it’s worth it.

20251101 - took 20 min bus from shirahama jr station. area have a cafe, free footbath and a paid entry inside the cave. Ticket cost 1500 yen and an elevator goes down to lower section where you can see many different rock formations, a nice shrine and experience the strong waves crashing into the cave during high tide. Ticket is a bit pricey for the relatively quick experience but good to experience once.
Frank P — Google review
Interesting area, probably over priced at $15 per person for approx 15 mins. has a cafe & shop attached.

Very Small little cave complex. The waves coming into it were quite impressive. However I felt a little hassled by the staff. At 1,500 per adult it seemed a little pricey for its size.
Lincoln W — Google review
It seems the shogunate used this cave as a hideout. It was a okay place. If you are in the area you can visit, don't go out of your way to visit this place. Tickets are 1500 yen, which is expensive compared to what you got to see...
Saurabh S — Google review
The cave is located in Shirahama and was carved by ocean waves of the Pacific Oceon thousands of years ago. It was used as a hideout for the pirates known as " Kumano Suigin" a local pirate who controlled sea routes along Kii Peninsular during Heian period (794-1185). Information and history about the cave can be read at the information centre. To explore the old cave, we have to take a 36meters elevator down. There are also a Shrine, old pirates clothes, & weapons used. It is full of historical mysteries and wonders. We had a wonderful experience visiting the cave. It is one of my favourite visited place in the area.
Fly O — Google review
Price is steep compared to other attractions in Japan standard. The cave could be finished within 10 minutes

It is a very lovely place to go and to enjoy nature and when the cherry blossoms are in bloom. As a matter of fact, we are going to go there again today to see the Cherry blossoms. They've also just completed some more renovations, which are, in my opinion is a great improvement. If you are in Shira Houma during the cherry blossom time of year, it's a must go see!

Seafood restaurant
Kanpachiya is a seafood-focused establishment that offers a range of delectable dishes, from sushi to fried fish, all served in a modern and efficient setting. While it may initially appear to be just a sushi restaurant, their menu also includes options like fish-based soup ramen alongside the sushi offerings. The quality of the food is surprisingly good, particularly the flavorful soup. The prices are affordable, and they have an extensive selection of lunch sets to choose from.
Super clean Japanese restaurant. Everything was fresh and excellent. Presentation of food is amazing. Wide variety of sea food dishes. Prices are very reasonable. Great staff, too. Visited more than ten times.

(Translated by Google) When I went to Shirahama on a family trip, I wanted to eat delicious seasonal local fish, so I found "Kanpachiya Seafood Restaurant" while driving. I went there at night, and the restaurant was full of customers. There was a fish tank at the entrance, and the atmosphere was good, as if I could eat delicious local fish. The Kanpachi platter included raw whitebait, and the bitter taste went well with sake. Speaking of local foods, Hirome wakame, fried moray eel, grilled turban shell, and fried Wakayama's No. 1 tachiuo were all delicious, but I was most addicted to "marinated red shrimp". It's not a local product, but the shrimp was marinated to the best of my taste, and I ordered more! For the final course, we had a 12-piece raw whitebait gunkan nigiri platter, but other than that there were few local fish, and there was a lot of tuna, salmon, eel, red shrimp, etc. It was a little disappointing compared to what I expected as there were many ingredients that you can get anywhere. The prices seemed high overall, but if you want to eat delicious seafood in the Shirahama area, this is a restaurant I would recommend!

Seafood market
TORETORE ICHIBA is a bustling fish market and souvenir shopping complex in Shirahama. It offers visitors a unique experience with its food court, onsen facility, and even a kid's game room. The market provides an array of seafood options for purchase, including BBQ seafood and sashimi at reasonable prices. Additionally, it features restaurants serving set meals and ramen, as well as local specialties like Wakayama umeboshi and umeshu.
Wow wow wow 😲 ... for me as a lover of all things fish, this place blew my mind 😱 NEVER have I seen anywhere else in Japan a better seafood, and solely seafood-related, establishment. The place is so well presented on clean dry floors, with soooo much for the eyes and mouth to feast on ! Fresh seafood, processed items, dining area, souvenirs, amazing giant fish replicas, live tanks, even a large aquarium ! All this on display to freely experience is almost too good to be true 🤗 but it's not likely you'll leave without a few things under your arm 😄 🐟

Tore Tore Ichiba is an absolute paradise for seafood lovers! The variety and freshness of the seafood here are unmatched. From live shellfish to premium cuts of tuna, everything is top-quality and reasonably priced. The market is lively, with friendly vendors offering samples and recommendations. The oysters and scallops were incredibly fresh, and the sushi selection was delicious. I also loved the local orange juice—it was rich and refreshing, the perfect drink to complement the seafood feast. The atmosphere is bustling but well-organized, making it an enjoyable experience for both tourists and locals. If you’re in Wakayama, this market is a must-visit for an authentic taste of Japan’s seafood culture! Would definitely come back again!

This is the cleanest "wet" market I've seen so far. Ok, it's a semi wet market, albeit having not much space 😉. Tore Tore Ichiba is also a tourist spot, especially on the summer day - so I was told. Plenty of stuff to buy - skewed shiifuud desu. Fresh sakana for sale. It has a huuuuge aquarium with cool fishes. Enjoy your stay with lots of tabemono. I've had a bowl of UDON soup "OISHII!" There's also a Play place for kids (claw machines and slots for toys. There is also a supppa to buy your omiyage aka pasalubongs!

Terrible Experience – Never Again The staff member at the BBQ check-in counter was unbelievably rude. He couldn’t speak English, yet he shouted right in my face and looked furious when I didn’t understand his broken English. I had booked a table for four, but he just kept yelling “NEXT!” with no explanation — so I had no idea if we had a table or had to wait. One minute later, he suddenly said there was a table upstairs. When we got there, more than half of the tables were completely empty. So why force customers to wait outside in the scorching heat at 12 p.m.? The organization and crowd management here are a joke. Food is overpriced and nowhere near worth it. 3400yen for a table with grill for 2 adults and 2 kids including unlimited soft drink also overpriced. Seafood was not fresh as advertised. The desserts sold outside were awful. One visit was more than enough — I will never return, and I strongly advise my friends and anyone reading this to stay away.

Watch the cutting of live tuna at 12 noon. Order and eat seafood around the many food stalls in the market. Must try the different fish cakes as they are fresh and juicy.

A large seafood market for tourists. There is a huge parking lot for free. A/C in the indoor area. Some shops can accept credit cards so it’s more convenient for the foreigners. The sea urchin rice bowl (うに丼) we purchased was not very fresh. Overall, it’s still a good place for food and souvenirs.

Yakiniku restaurant
On August 11, 2021, Matsushimaen, a yakiniku restaurant, was visited for dinner. The experience was highly satisfactory, with the high-quality meat being particularly delicious and fulfilling both physically and mentally. Although the portion size is limited due to the cost and oil content of the meat, it still provides a satisfying dining experience. The beef tongue stands out as an especially tasty option. In future visits, it would be interesting to explore the recommended daily menu choices.
This place is popular amongst the locals. Food quality is top notch and very reasonably priced.

Kumano Hongu Taisha is a serene Shinto shrine located in a tranquil mountain setting, accessible via a scenic trail and stone steps. The shrine hosts various festivals throughout the year, such as the Suna Festival Contest at Shirahama Beach in spring and the Kumano Hongu Taisha-Reitaisai Festival featuring rituals, dancing, and rice cake throwing.
Buddhist or not, you cannot help but be impressed by the size and magnitude of the OTorii gate and the Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine and complex. It is one of the 3 main shrines on the Kumano Kodo network. It is a Shinto Shrine with 4 main Buddha's to worship. In these shrines, common folk are to look through fences. I don't personally connect with that. I like to look at the statues I'm praying to and connect with the eyes, etc. But this is the Shinto way. The complex is bustling with pilgrims, both Japanese and foreign, mixed together. Some are there because one of the most frequently walked Kumano Kodo Trails ends a stage here, and some are visiting Japan. It's well worth a visit and you could spend an hour on the grounds. It's blossom season, so I'm lucky!

As the main shrine in the Kumano Sanzan, the outlook of the shrine is more ordinary. You would need to walk up a long stairs before reaching the main shrine, which is quite spectacular when viewing from top. The place is quite spiritual with not much tourist and people but nature sounds and beauty. For me, it was quite refreshing to visit this place.

The fifth stop on the Kumano Kodo Hosshinmon-oji hike is Kumano Hongu Taisha, the main shrine of the trail. It's a beautiful and peaceful place to get your stamp and take a break after the walk.
Ced A — Google review
Our pilgrimage along the Kumano Kodo trails began at Kumano Hongu Taisha, and it felt like both a natural and symbolic choice. In the tradition of the three Kumano shrines, Hongu represents the «present» — the moment that is lived here and now. For me, as a practicing Buddhist, this was a profound spiritual experience: the journey begins with the very moment where life, breath, and meaning exist. The shrine stands deep within the mountains of the Kii region, surrounded by dense forests and rivers that have been considered sacred for centuries. The landscape is both harsh and generous: the rushing waters of the Kumano River, the mist shrouding the peaks, and the thick greenery all give it a sense of being apart from the everyday world. It is no wonder that since ancient times people have come here seeking purification and renewal. The mythology of Kumano is closely tied to deities of death and rebirth. Susanoo-no-Mikoto, the storm god, is worshipped here, as is Izanami, the primordial mother associated with the realm of the dead. Yet through these figures also runs the idea of renewal — entry into the «Pure Land», where past and future converge. It is no coincidence that emperors of the Heian period came here to pray for rebirth and the salvation of the soul. The history of the shrine has not been without hardship. In 1889, a flood destroyed the original sanctuary that stood on the banks of the Kumano River. Since then, the main shrine has been rebuilt on higher, safer ground, where it remains today. On the site of the former shrine now stand the great Otorii — the largest shrine gates in Japan. There is a rule that the inner sacred area should not be photographed, and it is important to respect that. We traveled between the main shrines mostly by bus, walking only parts of the route, and this became a reflection for me on what truly defines a pilgrimage. Yes, in the past people walked these mountains for weeks, but what matters is not the means of travel, but what you carry within. This journey is made with the heart. Each visit to a shrine, each prayer, and each pause became part of an inner journey, regardless of how I physically arrived there. The Kumano Kodo is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, and to walk (or ride) along it is to join a thousand-year-old tradition. Beginning at Hongu means beginning with the present — with the living moment that opens the path to awareness. Pilgrims then usually continue to Hayatama Taisha (the past) and finish at Nachi Taisha (the future). This order carries a deep inner logic: to live the present, to recognize the past, and to face the future.

A beautiful smallish temple. Free to enter. There are a number of steps you have to climb to get to the top.

Did not manage to climb up to the shrine as it was raining heavily. There is parking and it is easily accessible by car. It was about 2.5 hrs drive from Wakayama city and 1.5 hrs drive to Shirahama city. Public toilet available before the climb up. Wheelchair friendly but please inform the staff for assistance. Recommended if you are around this area or plan to visit here.

End of Kumado Kodo pilgrimage trail 😃. Serene place where you can just close your eyes and medita... until the tourist next you starts eating chips 😃. You can buy some "merch" tho the hemp bracelet is overpriced and low quality but I mean it is what it is. The final stamp is awaiting you pilgrim. If you are dual pilgrim (did Camino) show up at the shrine office. The head priest will initiate drumming celebration of your achievement :).

Large Shinto shrine, always with crowds. Lots of Kumano Kado walkers as they require their final stamps. The bus exchange is nearby.

Oyunohara is a significant Shinto complex known for its historical and natural beauty. Originally the location of Kumano Hongu Taisha, the area suffered damage from a devastating flood in 1889, leading to the shrine's relocation. The highlight of Oyunohara is the imposing 33.9-meter tall torii gate, which was constructed in 2000 using steel-reinforced concrete.
The tallest torii in Japan, it stands in defiance in the middle of the flood plain (don't let the rice paddies fool you), silently reminding us of it's past glory and long history. While it is a modern production, the nearly indestructible torii nonetheless signifies people's undying faith. The shrine itself has been relocated to nearby hill side, and the old ground of the shrine has only a few Stony pieces to evidence it's prior life, leaving this massive torii the most stunning sight from miles away. A birds eyes view (too bad no drone allowed here or anywhere) must be awesome.

The former location of the shrine have a small forest remains which is quite spectacular and spiritual.

We hiked to get here and you could see the edge of this torii all the way across town as soon as you step out from the trees because it is SO big. Its open 24 hours but during the night there was no lighting at all, and if you plan on seeing the shrine nearby it closes at 5. There is a stamp here and one at the shrine too. Busses get more rare in the evening and there are less places to eat at night.
Louise T — Google review
Wonderful structure and you get lost on its size and calmness. The whole area is extremely beautiful and peaceful. In the uphill shrine stairs, we happened to confront a group of 200 local students visiting the place, and every single of them say hi to us one after the other- surprisingly lovely and memorable :)
Abolfazl V — Google review
The largest Torii gate in Japan, the title itself is worth visiting. It has a large site, behind it is a cedar forest which nestles the old site of the Hongu Taisha before it was flooded and rebuilt at its current spot. Do not miss out visit the river site just beside the old site, it's a nice place to have a rest before returning on the route atop the flood barrier for a different angle of the Torii gate.

An absolutely mind blowing experience. The feeling of calm in this area is incredible. Not only is the view stunning, but you’re walking on such an ancient piece of Japanese history! Be sure to check out the travel centre and learn all you can about the region of Wakayama. You won’t be disappointed!

Such a cool place to visit ! Next to the Kumano Hongu Taisha and a few little cafes and restaurants ! . I would recommend going earlier in the morning or late after noon for the best photos/viewing of the Tori gate. I visited during the midday sun so the Tori gate was cast in shadow which made photos a little underwhelming.

Hot Springs & Geysers
Tsubo-yu is a popular tourist destination located in Japan known for its traditional hot spring experience. It is situated in the town of Nyuto Onsen, Akita Prefecture, and provides an authentic Japanese atmosphere with its rustic architecture and natural surroundings. The hot spring water used in Tsubo-yu is rich in minerals that are believed to have healing properties. Visitors can immerse themselves in the outdoor and indoor baths while taking in the beautiful views of the surrounding mountains.
It was such an amazing experience to have an spa in an 1800 year old onsen on the Yunotani River in Yunomine which fits only 2 people. Purchase your ticket in advance at the vending machine, around the corner, in front of a shrine. Number of tix holder is displayed on door of onsen - each party has 30 minutes. When your number is next, take your place at the waiting area on upper level of onsen. Clean yourself properly before slipping in. Water is naturally and constantly replenished and discarded. You dip into very very hot water in a rock pool the size of a small spa and depth up to your waist when you sit. The bottom is strew with pebbles. And you enjoy!
Mighty M — Google review
You need to bring your own towel. There’s no queue for the public bath, but if you want to try the special blue onsen, you’ll need to purchase an additional ticket. The blue onsen allows 1–2 people at a time for 30 minutes per session. When buying the ticket, you’ll be informed of the wait time. You can also buy onsen eggs nearby.
Mia L — Google review
Buy your raw eggs at the cafe and place them in the middle of the hot pool to cook your very own Onsen eggs. Definitely lots of fun. The streets smell of sulphur steam coming from pipes...
Ng Y — Google review
Great experience! Tsuboyu was quite an experience. 1) buy the tickets at the automated machine close to the normal onsen (800yen); the person there will give you a number 2) buy towels there or bring your own 3) line up (if necessary) according to the number you received 4) remember: shower before coming here, there are no showers 5) enter the barrack after taking off your shoes 6) check the water temperature: if it is too hot, you can use the massive water outlet to cool it down (recommended) 7) mix the water with the wooden stick 8) enjoy! 9) use the small warm water tap to fill the buckets and rinse yourself
Giorgio D — Google review
This is the oldest hot spring in Japan. Strong smell of sulphur in the area. It is also part of kumano kodo pilgrimage area. Pilgrims soaked here to purify themselves before visiting kumano shrines. The color of the hot spring water changes several times a day due to natural minerals. You are allowed to buy eggs at the nearby convenient stores and cook in the boiling hot spring water. It will cook in about 12 minutes. You can pay small amount of money to bathe in a tub of a tiny stone hut privately about 30 minutes per session, but it is a long wait.
FLY O — Google review
Great public bath. Quite new, very clean, shower gel, shampoo and conditioner us even provided. We brought our own towels and therefore only paid 400 Yen. Great value as they have two different temperatures baths. Would have wished for a cold plunge bath. Overall great experience for this little money we paid. Tattoo friendly place.
Marcel C — Google review
But a ticket on the vending machine, and then you will get a ticket entry. You need to go back a bit and then straight, until you see a sign on your right to the onsen. There you put your number card next to the door and enter when called. The water were very hot as we were the first of that day and took about 10 minutes to cool them down. The ones was very cool, you can go as a couple and tattoos are ok
Noga B — Google review
Just sharing for information purposes. They are not tattoo friendly. They had a 2.5hr wait sign posted, we added money to the machine for a ticket, they then swapped the sign to a "full for night" right in front of us, we left, and upon walking away they put the 2.5hr wait sign back up. Just a friendly comment to say, cover your tattoos or set your expectations appropriately :)

(Translated by Google) This is a wonderful temple where you can quietly pray while listening to the sound of the river. It's not the same legend of Anchin Kiyohime as the one passed down at Dojoji Temple, but a new version that begins with Kiyohime's upbringing, which is very interesting. The temple itself is small, so you can spend about 30 minutes at your leisure. Updated January 10, 2024 I returned after a seven-month hiatus, and noticed a sign that the shop in front of the gate that sells sake and chili pepper offerings will be closing at the end of May this year. Currently, it appears to be open only on weekends and holidays. The temple no longer sells these items, so visitors are now required to bring them from home when praying. Perhaps because of this, the explanation of why sake and chili peppers are offered as offerings has also disappeared, and there were almost no offerings at Ichigan Jizo. Perhaps this is because first-time visitors are unaware of the custom. It's a unique custom and culture that you won't find anywhere else, so it's a shame. I wish temples would sell them... Frequent visits to the farmers' market can prove challenging when seeking out specific tangerines, as they tend to sell out quickly. It would be beneficial if producers made it easier for customers to find them. Additionally, there may be unsold items such as Takano Maki that are less appealing at the same price, resulting in occasional disappointment. Various products are available for purchase at differing prices, including oranges that create some concern over which ones to choose among the numerous options provided by local farmers.

I arrived at Kii-Tanabe station around 7:30 am and while waiting for the train, I ventured towards Tokei Shrine, which is just a brief 5-minute walk from the station. On an information board displayed in front of the station, it was proudly proclaimed to be a World Heritage Site. Within the shrine grounds, one can find sculptures depicting Samasu and Benkei. Unfortunately, during my visit, the main shrine was undergoing renovation and construction work.
It's been a while I visited here since my childhood. Quiet and sacred place. Hope we can keep here as it is without any dirty mind

Beautiful tokoro. There was a festival (matsuri) when I visited this shrine. It was for some kind of blessing of wagons from different types of work. People everywhere are having fun and lots of food.

Restaurant
If you find yourself near Kumano Hongu Taisha after a long day of hiking, "きっちん" is the perfect spot to refuel. This charming teishoku restaurant offers a delightful selection of Japanese set meals, with their Karaage Teishoku being a standout choice.
This restaurant is conveniently located just a short walk from Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine. My top recommendation is Deep Fried Chicken Set, the "Karaage-Teishoku" in Japanese which is Japanese-style fried chicken. The fried chicken is incredibly filling, with each piece being about 3-5 times larger than regular Japanese fried chicken, yet it is priced the same as other set meals. However, if you have a small appetite, you may want to take note. Not only is the fried chicken large, but it is also very tasty, with a crispy coating, juicy chicken with a slightly fatty texture, and a soy sauce-based seasoning that goes incredibly well with white rice. The set meal also includes miso soup and a side dish that varies depending on the season. The staff is very friendly, and while the speed of service may depend on how busy the restaurant is, it was quite fast during my visit.

This is a lovely restaurant. The bar counter is decorated with many cute lucky cats, and I noticed many tourists enjoying their meals too. We ordered a tonkatsu and a beef bowl. While the flavors might not surprise you, the taste is definitely worth the price.

Kitchen is a great spot to grab a hearty meal after hiking from Hosshimon Oji to Hongu Taisha. I especially recommend their Karaage Teishoku set (fried chicken lunch) — the portions are gargantuan, the chicken is crispy and flavorful, and the whole meal filling. The staff is always warm and welcoming, and they’ve been consistently kind whenever I stop by for lunch. It’s also incredibly convenient — just a short walk (less than five minutes) from the World Heritage Center and Hongu Taisha.

Thursday 2.30pm Just walked out of Kumano trail and was very hungry. Have been planning to have soba but most other places are closed. So disappointed but at least this place stayed open!! Order and service was prompt. Food was served without much wait, serving temperature was perfect. Taste was pretty standard with Japanese food. Nothing out of the ordinary. Most importantly the place was clean and orderly. Only one toilet available and it is the old fashioned squatting type. Convenient place to pop by after your trek.
TM O — Google review
Nice teishoku (japanese set meal) restaurant just next to Kumano Hongu Taisha 🍱 We got the karaage chicken set meal - highly recommended! You get 3 big pieces of delicious fried chicken that are incredible juicy with rice and other side dishes such as pickles, miso soup and salad. It’s great quality and really filling for such a good value, only 1200 JPY. After finishing our kumano kodo trail, it was one of the few options that were open (until 15:30). Around 14:00 we did not have to wait for a table. English menu is available with pictures so it is very helpful if you are not familiar with the japanese set meals.

Udon noodle restaurant
If you find yourself wandering along the scenic Kumano Kodo, a delightful stop is しもじ 本宮店. This charming eatery offers a variety of udon dishes that are perfect for recharging after exploring the nearby cultural sites, including the impressive giant Torii gate at Oyunohara. Diners rave about their flavorful curry udon and recommend opting for beef over breaded pork for an even more satisfying experience.
We had an excellent meal and they have English menu! And chairs !!!!! Extremely fast.

Absolutely worst experience ever in Japan. It rained very heavily in the city today. After we entered the restaurant, we waited an extremely long time to order, even though there weren’t many customers inside. The food was passable, but the staff’s attitude was terrible—I’ve never experienced such poor service in Japan. After finishing our meal, we wanted to wait for about 10 minutes for the rain to stop before leaving, so we paid first to avoid inconveniencing the restaurant. However, the staff repeatedly rushed us to leave, claiming that other customers needed the table—even though there were plenty of empty seats available. When we asked if we could stay a little longer, we were rudely refused. Our entire dining time was less than 20 minutes. This restaurant is located in front of Kumano Hongu Taisha, and it’s an experience you’d definitely want to avoid on your trip.

I came with my friends. My partner had the カレー天うどん (tempura curry udon), and she said the broth was very flavorful. Unfortunately, the noodles did not suit the hot broth very well. I had the 天ざるうどん (Cold Udon with Tempura Set — Pictured). Service was exceptional, and the lady very kindly added a poached egg to my meal at my request. The noodles were a bit overcooked, but all the elements perfectly blended for a cooling dish: perfect in the summer heat. All in all, a satisfying pit stop on my way along Kumano Kodo. Would suggest to anyone needing a break on this scenic road trip. The scenery around the restaurant is wonderful.

Sushi restaurant
If you find yourself in Tanabe, make sure to stop by Horai Sushi, a charming little eatery run by a delightful couple. This cozy restaurant is conveniently located just a short stroll from the Tourist Information Center and stays open later than many other dining spots. The menu features incredibly fresh fish sourced locally, along with homegrown vegetables that elevate each dish. During my visit, I indulged in their tempura appetizer and sushi set meal—both were outstanding!
The family that run the restaurant are very welcoming. The food is excellent and the prices very reasonable. Photos show Sushi bowel Y1,650, Sushi with Ramen Y1,100 and Tempura set menu Y1,540. English menu available.

A short walk from the Tourist Information Center, this restaurant is opena bit later than most of the restaurants that close at 14:00. They offer incredibly fresh fish caught locally, and they also grow their own vegetables. Quick service, and of course the food is delicious!

Best place in Tanabe, went for lunch and then dinner. Ingredients sourced locally, mainly planted and harvested by the owners. Ran by an elderly couple. The sushi was amazing, prepared right in fron of you, just the right amount of wasabe, fresh ingredientes... Amazing. Beer pouring skills 20/10, just like the beers back home where each gulp leaves a ring of foam on the inside of the glass. Tempura was excellent, comes with a very nice soup, highly recommened.

Okage-san Izakaya is a unique eatery that offers personalized dishes upon request, even if they are not on the menu. The picture of the desired dish can be shown to the chef, who will make it happen. We had the full yakitori varieties … the chicken liver is a must order. Super good super tender. food seasoning is on point! Free cabbage salad and yakitori are amazing! Also great ginger ale!
Tina L — Google review
Absolutely delicious food in a very traditional and local Izakaya. Small selection of mostly chicken (and chicken parts) on the English menu, Japanese has more options. The tofu is to die for - and I'm allergic to soy. I didn't die, but if I did, I'd have died happy. It is made locally - literally by a bloke who lives up the road. For sides, the radish salad is incredible (get the dressing) as was the yam. As a foreigner, if you go, it might be best to research customs on how to order Izakaya. I don't think i offended anyone too much, but to the chef, I apologise deeply for any offense caused, you are a handsome and hardworking man. Come for the genuine local experience, ambience and food. You can't get much more 'real Japan' than this. It is a short and pleasant after dinner walk to most local Ryokan and Minshuku.

Shirarahama Beach is a renowned seaside destination located in the charming resort town of Shirahama. The beach stretches over 600 meters and boasts pristine white sand, with 90% of it being quartz. Its curved bay offers calm waters, making it an ideal spot for relaxation and swimming. This popular tourist attraction has been recognized as one of the '100 Best Beaches in Japan' and is even twinned with Waikiki Beach in Hawaii.
Very amazing beach !! Very clean water White sand beach. I think this is one of the best beach in Japan. The parking car just in front of the beach is very cheap. Only 500 yen/day. Please keep clean and nurture this place !

This place made me wonder why Japanese travels as far as Thailand to a beach when they have such a beautiful beach like this one. The sand is so white and smooth. It is well kept and beautiful. People respectfully use the beach and the safety is well protected. I went to the season open festival and see the rescue demonstration. I also went there again at the sunset and in the morning. It is charming every time you go. You can't miss this if you are in the area.

Probably the best beach in Japan. Beautiful sand and very good amenities next to the beach. The water is so clear and usually no waves.

Quiet beach sheltered by a reef so ideal for swimming. The water is as inviting as it looks. Showers and footbath at beach edge. There is also a hot spring bath during the season. This is open air so swim suits are worn. There is strange 'Squid Game' voice over the PA every hour telling you how to behave on the beach. Quite disconcerting the first.time you here it.

Clean beach. Clear waters. Quite hot in the afternoon but still good weather in early November. Have some parking spaces nearby and easily accessible by car.

The Minakata Kumagusu Museum, located near Shirahama's famous beach in Wakayama Prefecture, showcases the life and achievements of Minakata Kumagusu, a renowned writer, scientist, and botanist. The museum features artifacts from his work in folklore, biology, and ecology. Visitors can explore displays highlighting his research on fungi and his contributions to nature conservation and ecology. The museum also offers a beautiful rooftop deck with stunning views.
What an absolutely wonderful place to visit. This was a real unexpected joy. So glad I visited and was introduced to this inspiring man, Minakata Kumagusu. The museum is presented very well and a 15 minute video presentation with English subtitles enabled me to understand and appreciate all that the museum offered. There are walking trails leading from the museum around the Peninsula Headland as well. Be sure to drive up to the top car park through the entrance drive to save you from a very steep walk from the lower car park. The views from the observation Top deck are amazing. A Shirahama highlight !

Admission fee: ¥600 The museum is so aesthetically pleasing. It’s so beautiful and very well-maintained. However, you’re not allowed to take photos inside the permanent exhibition room. From the first parking lot to the museum is quite a steep hike. But there’s a second parking lot which is closer, so look out for that. You have to pay for admission ticket to get inside, especially if you want to see the observation deck. However, don’t come when it’s raining because the observation deck is closed.

Zhijie H — Google review
We really enjoyed our visit to this museum. The museum is a modest three-story building which can be toured in under an hour. However, its exhibits are concise and effectively chronicle the life of Minakata Kumagusu, complemented by multilingual audio guides. We highly recommend the 360-degree observatory on the top floor, offering views of Engetsu Island, the expansive ocean, and the nearby town. (Note: The observatory may be closed during strong winds or inclement weather, so be mindful of the visiting hours.)

Tenjin-zaki Cape is a highly sought-after destination that offers breathtaking views. Visitors often worry about whether the tides will align with their travel plans, but they are usually fortunate to witness a favorable tide during sunset. Weather conditions can be variable, with occasional drizzles and cloudy skies. To capture Instagram-worthy photos, it is recommended to wear attire that can withstand dirty feet as the terrain can get muddy. Despite the receding tide, there may still be some splashing involved.
(Translated by Google) If you are coming by car, we recommend parking at the ``Tenjinzaki Motojima Parking Lot'' and walking as it will be difficult to leave your large vehicle. When the tide is low and the tide level is around 150 to 140 cm, the water accumulated on the reef reflects beautifully, and you can take reflection photos like those of Salar de Uyuni. For more information, the tide table is posted on the website of the Tanabe Tourism Association in Tanabe City, so be sure to check it in advance. Depending on the timing, there may be a lot of people, but since the photo is made with the presence of the subject, everyone was able to have a good time taking the photo. According to the locals, the sunset after a shower is even better.

There seems to be a relationship between the tide and the conditions under which it looks beautiful, and it appears to be visible on sunny days when the tide is completely low and the area is filled with salt. It seems like the tourist center will let you know when the next time it will be nice to see it.

(Translated by Google) I stayed at Kanpo no Yado and after checking out, I stopped by because it was right next to the hotel 🙂 Since it was early in the morning, there were only locals picking up trash and fishing, and we were the only tourists. So I was able to take a leisurely stroll and take photos. The water is clear and beautiful. The sunlight reflected and sparkled, and I was able to take some fantastic photos 📷 There were hermit crabs and crabs, and even though I'm old enough, I got really excited about natural creatures and had a lot of fun lol I would like to visit again this summer.

(Translated by Google) I came here because I was told that I could take pictures of the Salar de Uyuni. It's hard to find a place where you can take the kind of photos you want. . . I think it also depends on the tides and the strength of the wind. The rest is luck! ! ! If I have a chance to come next time, I would like to try it at sunset before sunset. 2021.12.12

Family restaurant
Nestled in Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture, the Gusto Kii Tanabe store is a delightful stop for travelers exploring the area. After a day of adventure at Nanki Shirahama and Adventure World, this classic eatery offers a welcome respite with its spacious parking lot and clean, comfortable dining environment. Guests can enjoy a variety of dishes, including the limited-time motsu nabe and affordable salads that are both tasty and satisfying.

(Translated by Google) Kii Tanabe Gusto harasses the elderly the most in Japan It's clearly different from the staff at Royho. . . . . Plus, it was very noisy. The chairs moved around like they were banging. The cat robot moved around at twice the volume as in other stores. The rattling of dishes could even be heard over the toilet. Is it only when the target is there? Even the female customers were surprised by the sound. P.S. Neither Skylark group points nor credit card points are awarded. This is my first time getting points harassed. Great value for money. The robot waitress never smiles but all the other staff are wonderful and always friendly.

(Translated by Google) The limited-time motsu nabe was delicious. Salads are cheap and delicious. Orders are placed on a tablet and served by a serving robot. Although it is a business format with simplified services, there are no problems in terms of operation and service. The staff was nice.

The parking lot is spacious, the store is clean, and the seats are comfortable. This time, we took a short break/coffee time with the ``hamburger + rice set/drink bar included''. Thank you for being highly reproducible all over the country! Thank you for the meal. Hamburger restaurant
Mos Burger Nanki Shirahama is a beloved branch with a stunning view, offering outdoor seating and a unique atmosphere. It stands out for its great surroundings and ample parking. The friendly staff, despite limited English, provide helpful service and an English menu is available. Additionally, the restaurant features a drive-through option and boasts an amazing waterfront view. Whether or not you're a fan of Japanese burgers, this location comes highly recommended for its location and ambiance.
We had a semi late night fud cravings, so we met with Mos Baagaa. Oishi! Price is right. Lots of sets and combos to choose from.

This is my definitive my favorite MOS burger branch. It has a stunning view and you can sit outside. I'm pretty sure there is no second MOS with this great surrounding. I went there several times and it was never really crowded so I really enjoyed the atmosphere. They even have a second restroom for customers sitting on the terrace. Parking is also no problem. Highly recommend even if you are not a fan of (japanese) burgers.
