Kaga in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Kaga, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Kaga is known for its historic hot-spring towns such as Yamashiro, Yamanaka and Katayamazu Onsen, where you can stay in traditional ryokan and soak in mineral-rich baths. The area showcases classic Japanese craftsmanship, including Kutani-yaki porcelain and Kaga Yuzen silk dyeing, often demonstrated at local studios and museums. Nearby natural sights like Kakusenkei Gorge and the Hakusan mountain foothills offer scenic walking paths, while Natadera Temple combines dramatic rock formations with centuries-old religious architecture. Fresh seafood from the Sea of Japan and refined Kaga-style kaiseki cuisine add another highlight to a visit.
With favorites like Kaga Yumenoyu, Masuya, and Science Hills Komatsu, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Masuya and Kaga Yumenoyu so you can get the best taste of Kaga while you’re here. The mall serves as a convenient one-stop shopping destination, featuring various shops for everyday needs, along with free bus service from Komatsu station and ample parking. Certainly one of the better AEON malls I've been to. Very clean and modern appeal with plenty of stores. 3 floors of mall and it was nice to spend some time here before going to the airport to fly out. Food court had a good variety of options as well.

Museums
Nestled near Komatsu Station, Science Hills Komatsu is a strikingly modern science museum that resembles rolling hills. Opened in March 2014, this venue offers an engaging experience for visitors of all ages with its interactive exhibits and a captivating dome-shaped planetarium. One standout feature is the Wonderland exhibit, which creatively connects local industries to scientific education.
Such a fun place to visit. The entrance is free but there is a fee for the planetarium. Make sure to check for the time schedules available for the planetarium. There were many educational and fun activities inside. You can also enjoy exploring the area outdoor. You can take the stairs outside to the rooftop and enjoy the view of Komatsu. They even have a challenge wall. Loved the fun design of the building. Enjoyed our time here.
Aibi Y — Google review
This is interesting place to visit with your family. The staff are very kind and you can try many education games with your children here. You also can watch 3D movies here which has convenience cinema inside it. Children fee ticket for cinema only 250 ¥, recommended event for relax about 30 minutes while watching the 3D movie. Wassalam.

One star for being open, another star for the fact that they have nice merchandise. However, big outdoor excavators are behind fences - and were closed due to super light rain. Overall didn’t meet our expectations. Maybe better for kids…

More an advertisement for Komatsu Co. A few displays are interesting. For the non Japanese speaker it is a bit limited. Probably more designed to cater for the obligatory bus loads of school children on school excursion s and the occasional corporate seminar. As noted below my child also found the climbing wall on the outside to be the most interest experience. I took the poor placement of undersized whale shaped wind turbines that were constantly swivelling to catch the gusts of wind as further evidence that Japan does not understand wind power.

Came here through my exchange, really modern and nice, also love the climbing wall round the back but I do have to admit I fell asleep in the planetarium oop

The Motorcar Museum of Japan is a must-visit for car enthusiasts, housing around 500 classic cars from various eras and origins. The museum showcases lineages of classic Japanese cars like Toyota and Nissan, as well as renowned international brands such as Rolls-Royce and Mercedes-Benz. Visitors can marvel at rare specimens that once belonged to royalty, appeared in films or anime, and even a Doraemon-shaped solar car. The collection is constantly refreshed, offering an exciting surprise with each visit.
There are so many cars, a large space and three floors of vehicles from 1900-1990s. Such as a whole row of Skyline GTR generations, informations on the history of Japanese car companies, and other car brands from around the world. Access is a bit secluded in the suburbs but easy to reach by car (ironic right?) Pricing Adult ¥1200 Child ¥600
Lucas L — Google review
There are many car brands and models here, especially classic ones that look beautiful and unique. However, it might be better if the display were more visually appealing. Since the place has three floors, simply lining up the cars by brand makes it look a bit old and dusty — which is a missed opportunity. Ticket costs 1,200 jpy

We went on a weekday. It was not too crowded. The restaurant was closed when we visited. The place was spacious and it was really filled with cars. Car enthusiast will definitely enjoy this place. The Doraemon & panda car was so cute! Enjoyed looking around.
Aibi Y — Google review
We had a fantastic time seeing all the various cars and trucks. We went about two hours before closing, and were able to see the whole place, but would have liked to have spent a little more time there. A wide range of vehicles from around the world with the majority from Japan. We really appreciated the “common” cars that would have otherwise been forgotten by time.

What an exceptional find! We had just come from the Komatsu no mori and just randomly found this museum with more than 500 cars from all shapes, sizes, models, eras... My husband is a car guy and he thoroughly enjoyed it. Although, I didn't see a Mustang II in there so I question the legitimacy... 🤣. I kid. It was awesome. Even the toilets were vintage!
Pipi G — Google review
Not sure it was worth the cost of admission or time spent here. Maybe if I was Japanese some of the cars would have more meaning. The cars aren't displayed in an interesting way, they're just jammed in next to each other. We've visited other car museums and this one wasn't great. If you do decide to go, make sure you visit the bathrooms to see toilets from different countries (not sure how that relates to cars, but it was funny).
Alex A — Google review
Very interesting collection of cars Beautiful architecture 2x 2000GTs and a 300SL Gullwing were a surprise A Jza80 Rz and a R34 GTR would finish off the collection nicely though

The Nakaya Ukichiro Museum of Snow and Ice is an exceptional science museum with interactive displays and demonstrations. Visitors can learn about the science behind snow and ice through hands-on exhibits, while enjoying a riverside cafe. Although some signage is in Japanese, there are plenty of English translations available for non-Japanese speaking visitors to enjoy this unique museum dedicated to the study of snow and ice.
Assalamualaikum brother. This snow museum is in Komatsu. This museum has many educational equipments to explain about how the snow will be created. Entrance fee is 560¥ for adult and free for children. High school students and below are free as well. Parking area is free and spacious. There is a movie theater as well about snow creations. This museum is great place for families recreation. Recommendation place to visit in Komatsu.

A very interesting museum about one man's research into snow and ice. As with most Japanese museums, it is well designed with interactive aspects and multiple displays. We received a brochure in English but most of the exhibits are in Japanese only, we used Google translate on our phones. The architecture of the museum is incredible. Unfortunately we visited after the 2024 new year's earthquake and there was some minor damage to the exterior so we could not see all the building. The staff here are very lovely and helpful. If you are into science and scholarship you will enjoy this. The view alone is worth it.

Visitors can learn about snowflakes through materials and hands-on experience. Children will be very happy to experience fog as well. The explanations are basically in Japanese. The entire building has an interesting shape, and you can enjoy a walk in the surrounding park as well. It takes about one hour to walk around the entire building.
Tadashi T — Google review
Perfect small museum to while away a few hours. Very family friendly. Ukichiro Nakaya had a fascinating life of research that sent him to Greenland, Hokkaido, Hawaii and more studying snow formation in order to understand what was needed for snow to happen. The movie was fascinating and there were several demonstrations on creating snow and what happens when it melts. Enough hands on exhibits to keep your child engaged. Don’t miss the fog installation by famous artist Fujiko Nakaya and the amazing tea room

(Translated by Google) Visited on a weekday in August 2020. This is a science museum where you can enjoy experiments with snow and ice and exhibits introducing the achievements of Dr. Ukichiro Nakatani, a professor at the Faculty of Science at Hokkaido University who was born in Katayamazu. I had never heard of Dr. Nakatani until now, but when I was traveling to Kaga Onsen, I learned about the existence of this science museum, which had good reviews on Google Maps, and stopped by. Dr. Nakatani's research results and life will be explained in great detail in the video screening (25 minutes). He holed up on Mt. Tokachi and took many photos of snow crystals, and published a graph called the ``Nakaya Diagram'' that classified the relationship between crystal shape, temperature, and humidity. The world's first successful creation of artificial snow crystals. In his later years, he was involved in ice research in Greenland, which was something I learned for the first time. I thought that this kind of steady research would lead to global weather forecasting and the development of natural science. The exhibits include many high-resolution photos of snowflakes, making it feel like an art museum. After the video screening, the staff members conducted experiments, and we saw the ``Tyndall phenomenon,'' in which the inside of ice melts due to light, ``diamond dust,'' ``supercooling phenomenon,'' and ice ``necklace making'' that utilizes the thermal conductivity of aluminum. Everything was very fun, the explanations were easy to understand, and it left a lasting impression on me. I knew Diamond Dust by name, but I thought I would never actually see it, so I was very impressed. In addition, in the courtyard of the science museum, ``Garden of Mist'' by Fujiko Nakatani, the world-renowned artist who is the second daughter of the doctor, will be performed once every 30 minutes. The contrast between Greenland's rocks and the rising fog is dynamic. The children who visited the museum were so excited to be able to step into the fog. I thought it was a wonderful science museum, with so many unique things to see and learn. Unfortunately, although it was a cool building designed by Arata Isozaki, the slope was closed off. Is it no longer passable due to deterioration? The colored cones and ropes are a bit of a bummer, so I hope they do something about them soon.

It's not like I asked them to grill it first, or that the restaurant staff said they would grill it first, but when I got there and looked at the prices, there were other dishes that looked delicious, so I was going to order something different, but they said, "It's already grilled," so I had no choice but to reluctantly order that! Kaga Yumenoyu is a traditional hot spring facility in Kagaonsen that takes pride in using local ingredients for its hot water pudding. The eggs come from a local poultry farm, while the milk is sourced directly from a ranch in Kaga-shi. The onsen offers various baths including natural hot spring water, radium, tea, sauna, carbonated water bath, and a cold bath. There are also outdoor baths with seating and an indoor area for dining.
It was amazing, it had natural onsen water in all the baths, but it also had specialized baths (with natural hot spring water) with radium, tea, there was a sauna, there was a carbonated water bath (you get bubbles on your skin when you go in), and a cold bath for after the sauna. It had an outside bath with chairs to chill on outdoors (completely naked so it felt so good) (the walls are tall so don’t worry about anyone seeing you from the outside). I completely recommend this place. The baths ranged from 30 to 40.7 degrees Celsius.

There's a wide variety of baths, including an electric bath, walking bath, sauna, and open-air bath, so you can enjoy it however you like. It's relatively quiet at night, but the mornings are even quieter, allowing for a more relaxing experience. Late nights and mornings on weekdays are often filled with solo visitors, making it a very quiet and relaxing place. The parking lot is surprisingly spacious, making it easy to access by car. There's also a coupon slot machine you can try for free, which adds a little fun.
