Shibukawa in 3 days

If you only have 3 days to spend in Shibukawa, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Shibukawa is best known as the gateway to Ikaho Onsen, a historic hot spring town with atmospheric stone stairways, traditional inns, and iron-rich baths overlooking the slopes of Mount Haruna. The area offers easy access to outdoor activities, including hiking, autumn foliage viewing, and winter sports in the surrounding mountains. Nearby attractions include Ikaho Green Bokujo (a family-friendly farm park) and the contemporary Hara Museum ARC. Shibukawa also sits near the Mizusawa district, famous for its hand-made udon noodles served at long-established shops.
With favorites like Ikaho Shrine, 木暮茶寮, and Mizusawadera Temple (Mizusawa Kannon), we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Yukian and Taisho Romantic Black Boat Shop so you can get the best taste of Shibukawa while you’re here. Nestled along the picturesque Haruna River, Haruna Shrine is a captivating ancient Shinto shrine that dates back to 586 AD, making it one of the oldest in Gunma Prefecture. Surrounded by majestic cedar forests and towering mountains, this serene site is dedicated to the revered deity of Mount Haruna. Visitors flock here not only for its spiritual significance—praying for love, marriage, and childbirth—but also to immerse themselves in its rich history and breathtaking natural beauty.
One of the best shrines in Gunma in my opinion. The nature is beautiful and the walk to the shrine is very peaceful. The shrine was under construction unfortunately but it was still an amazing experience.

Great place to visit. Not too crowded area but has good tourism support infrastructure. Access is relatively easy to walk through with break areas and shops scattered along the way. Main area was being renovated at September 2024 so its view was limited but overall place and the walk still make it a beautiful place to visit.

Beautiful, serene and tranquil shrine in the mountains of Takasaki City. This shrine is really old and now undergoing major renovation works. It's still very much worth a visit if you're in the area.
Matan K — Google review
It is a beautiful place! We loved the walk to the main building that you can see the waterfall along the way. Unfortunately, there are still ongoing preservation work at the main shire. Anyhow, the whole walk and surrounding scenery worth the visit. May 20025.
Narumon E — Google review
A very good place to visit for those who are looking for a solemn place to pray. It's my second time to visit this Shrine and it seems the construction is not yet finished so I can't rate it 5 stars. From Takasaki Station, we ride a bus and stop on the foot of the Shrine. When we arrived, there are remains of snow from the last day. It took us 15minutes to reach the Shrine since we enjoyed the scenery Haruna Shrine offers. The road is cemented, there are few sloppy stairs but it's not that hard to ascend. I've seen a shop where you can buy foods in case you've got a hungry stomach. For those who have cars, there is parking near the entrance of of the Shrine.
Clarel M — Google review
Not too touristy, 1,300 year old campus of shrines curved out on the side of mountains in Gunma Prefecture. Very somber, impressive buildings - not because they are foiled in gold or they have the record ranking size, but because they have quietly endured the time, and still existing. When I went there, it was the 2nd day of the New Year, and yet still, not too many people were there, daring the bitter cold air of the cedar woods and frozen water falls. I live in western NY, so I know cold - this place carried it's own winter bitter! True to the essence of Shintoism, even the smallest and the most eroded structures are still kept, tendered and their dieties are well respected. A little Cha-Ya (tea house) half way up the lane that's leading up to the main shrine, reminded me of how things were perhaps 1,000 years ago, treating those who have traveled days or weeks, or even month to get there, on foot. ( I'm pretty fit BUT their official "15 minutes to the top shrine" was a bit of a stretch - a handful of really old ladies in their 80- 90 something were walking with a cane, taking rest every few steps up a very steep stone starts) This place is famous for the plums. Their Plum Cake (Ume Manju) was very tasty, with a whole cooked plum inside, wrapped inside of not too sweet red bean paste.
Mohri H — Google review
A tranquil place with solemnity where you'll find a nice trail leading to a Japanese shrine of hundreds years old inside the mountain. Everything is so original without much artificial decoration. Lucky that not many foreign tourists (particularly.those from.mainland Chinese) know this place, the site remains quiet and one can really enjoy an escape of busy life here walking leisurely deep in mountain. Definitely a five star tourist site as of today.

The shrine area was magical. It felt like walking into a fairy-tale. Also, I highly recommend the hike from the shrine to Haruna lake. It is difficult, but the view over the lake is amazing.

Nestled in the city of Takasaki, Japan, Lake Haruna is a captivating caldera lake located on Mount Haruna. Encompassed by stunning mountains and verdant scenery, this picturesque lake spans about 5.5 kilometers and offers a serene setting for visitors. The area surrounding the lake boasts various outdoor activities such as winter skating and ice fishing, along with nearby campsites for those seeking an immersive natural experience.
Best place for couples and for families. Lots of awesome activities to do. And very good restaurants nearby. And initial D fans will lobe this place.

Didn’t meet the full expectation but the lake is calm and serene. Lots of free parking. Lots of paddle boats. Lots of horses. Ropeway seems not worth it.

The best place as photo spot during autumn. If you love to take a drive, it’s the best place to take a break. Some local restaurant provides delicious foods and snacks. There are also a very large parking space around. You can also enjoy a horse/horse cart ride.

Locals are so nice and friendly here. Came for an afternoon by the lake and my car refused to start. Luckily, a local mechanic in a green Nissan happened to be nearby and offered to help. Slightly awkward, but got everything handled quickly. I never saw them again, but I’m grateful for their help. Minus a star thanks to cigarette ashes in the tofu at the nearby shop. Maybe he would’ve noticed if he’d actually looked.

The lake water was completely frozen. The snow is porous and soft, can create a snowman on the lake shore I like to see the lake in winter, it has a very special beauty

Mount Haruna, known for its appearance in the manga Initial D, is not just a single mountain but a collection of sommas centered around it. The area features Lake Haruna and the emerald greenery of Joshu's mountains. Visitors can take a 3-minute ropeway ride from Haruna Kogen Station to the summit station to enjoy breathtaking views. Additionally, the town at the foot of Mount Haruna offers an onsen experience with iron-rich water and a serene atmosphere.
I heard there are to categories of japanese mountains. One called Yama or san and others Mountain. Haruna Yama is very beautiful in every season.

It was a very beautiful mountain ⛰️ where you can climb up by rope way! If the weather is fine, this place has wonderful scenery guaranteed! You’ll see Takasaki and Tokyo, and Mt. Fuji! Come and see the nice scenery of it! Cheers 🥂

I drove to Mount Haruna on Japanese Battleship Haruna's launch day in a rental R33 skyline. It was one of the best days of my life. 2024/12/14.
Leo H — Google review
Mount Haruna offers easy access to stunning summit views via ropeway, with beautiful Lake Haruna in the foreground and distant cityscapes and mountains creating a picturesque panorama. This mountain is famously known as the tofu delivery route from the popular anime Initial D, adding some cultural significance to the natural beauty. The drive around Mount Haruna itself is delightful, passing lovely flower fields and areas where students enjoy nature and fresh mountain air. Taking the ropeway to the summit provides that perfect open-sky feeling and sense of freedom that makes mountain visits so refreshing. It’s a great stop if you’re traveling to Ikaho and want to add some scenic variety to your trip.

The drive up the mountain was a bit difficult for my friend's little car, but it was a really lovely area. Had a nice walk around.

If you see a kid in the white AE86 Trueno with some japanese writings on the right door early in the morning - don't try to race with him, you will not be satisfied by the outcome.
ChromeVanadium — Google review
Aside from the fact that Initial D is my favorite anime. This journey and this hike up this mountain was one of the best hikes and journeys, I have ever done in my life. I started from Onogami station, and then made it all the way to the top of mount Haruna right as the sunset. Unfortunately the cable cars weren't operating at the time so i had to climb to the top after hiking all the way up myself. Anyone climbing or exploring around this area. This place is a must.
Samuel P — Google review
The closest major train station is takasaki, and if you don't wanna walk 30km to the top, there's a bus that goes all the way to the lake. The actual top is accessible by ropeway for a few hundred yen, and has a decent view. Around the lake is a little town, restaurants, horseback riding, hotel, and pedal boats you can rent. Quiet little place, I really enjoyed it.

Ikaho Shrine is a serene 9th-century shrine located in the heart of the town, accessible by climbing 365 steps. These steps were constructed during the late 16th century to provide access to healing springs for injured soldiers. The shrine is situated on a hill above the city and is considered the guardian deity of Ikaho Onsen. With its long history dating back to the early Heian period, it holds significance as an influential shrine.
An interesting temple! You need to climb 365 stairs to reach the main temple. In the meantime, you can enjoy many shops along the way. Food, amusement, drink, onsen. The oden here is also really delicious. But the best food is definitely the soft cream!!!
Alvin S — Google review
Small local shrine at the top of the famous ‘365’ steps. Worth the visit if you’re in the area. There are many wonderful smaller details to look out for around the shrine and it has a good view of the town. It is also the start of a walk up the mountain.
Michele C — Google review
The temple was rather OK, but what steal the show is the surrounding shops and village that has a lot of character and vibe. Some buildings are old and shut down, an old memory of the great economy times of the era. I felt nostalgic and trapped in time. It was great that I stopped over to see this place.

Ikaho Onsen Stone Steps is a historic landmark featuring a 400-year-old staircase lined with eateries, souvenir shops, and ryokan inns. Visitors can indulge in the open-air bath filled with hot water from Ikaho-onsen's renowned spring, 'Ogon-no-yu'.

A place if you need a great workout ! 365 steps to hike up but was too quiet to continue on my own to see the Onsen. So just visited the shrine n wander around the shops n lanes… shops are quaint n there are the 12 Chinese horoscopes plates embedded along the footpath. I took a break soaking my feet in the public foot bath

This is a cute stairway lined with shops of all kinds and providing incredible views of the surrounding mountains. There are 365 stairs to climb up, and lots of small details to discover along the way. Try not to get too caught up in taking photos, and use the opportunity to set your eyes on a distant horizon. Breathe deep.
Veronica G — Google review
This quaint onsen town was extremely pleasant and enjoyable. There were plenty of souvenir stores, and snack stores selling sweets and pastries. Some cafes also serve lunch and they are all just along the stone steps leading up. You can take the JR express bus from Shinjuku, or a local bus from Maebashie.
Michelle Y — Google review
An interesting village where these stone steps were originally built to promote the area during the Edo period. Now a popular hot spring destination, it’s filled with shops and restaurants offering various local specialties. The steps also provide a lovely view over the village.
Zimmj Z — Google review
Entire area is really small, it can be done in 15-20 minutes. The only initial D thing is the drain cover at the bottom of the stairs & a poster higher up the stairs. I would not think it’s worth a day trip here on public transport but if you’re staying at the onsens it’s a really nice excursion.

It's like a castle floating in the sky!? Enjoy the spectacular views at the Taiwanese temple "Bukkouzan Hosui-ji" in Ikaho. Located on top of a mountain and offering spectacular views, the Rinzai sect temple "Bukkouzan Hosui-ji" is a popular tourist spot in Ikaho. At the top of the stairs, you can enjoy Taiwanese sweets and light meals at the main hall, draw fortunes, and participate in free copying of sutras and zazen. Why not take a stroll around the temple and enjoy the differences from Japanese temples?

Loved this Taiwan ‘s style temple. The view from the top of the hill, facing Gunma’s mountains is amazing. The monk kindly explained us the features of the temple. Being constructed in 2018, it is ♿️ accessible, with an elevator that allows all to reach the second floor.

Udon noodle restaurant
The udon noodle eatery 游喜庵, located in a market corner, offers delectable curry udon that boasts authentic spiciness. It is advisable to heed their spice ratings as the dish truly packs a punch. The meat toppings are exceptionally tender, making it unnecessary to opt for larger portions; instead, one can satisfy their hunger by adding extra toppings. Despite its unassuming location, this establishment surpasses all expectations with its superb torotoro curry.
Delicious curry udon that’s actually spicy, so take their spice ratings seriously! The meat toppings are super tender, so skip the omori portions and add extra toppings instead if you’re hungry.

(Translated by Google) As expected, curry at udon and soba restaurants is delicious. There is no mistake in that theory. The curry was sticky and had a lot of flour in it so that it would stick to the udon easily. I had the mild Japanese style, but it was not too spicy. The summer vegetables were a nice touch, and it added a nice touch to the flavor. I ordered a regular portion, but my friend who went with me ordered a large portion. When I tried it, I felt that the large portion was about normal. (Maybe it was a little too much.) I love udon and curry, so I'm picky about curry udon. The one here is so delicious that it's worth trying. (But it's expensive in a tourist area. I think there must be other things to eat for this price, but well, if I say that, I can't eat in a tourist area, so please take it as a voice in my heart.) I went there by motorcycle, so after parking my bike, I had to climb quite a few stone steps to get to the restaurant. If it's hot in the middle of summer, you'll be drenched in sweat, so be careful.

(Translated by Google) August 17, 2025, around 12:30 PM I ordered a large portion of curry udon and rice. The menu said "Gara Macha." The restaurant was recently renovated and is now very clean. You order by scanning the QR code on the table and choosing from the menu. This is smartphone-only. You can also call a staff member and they will recommend ordering via the QR code. Thoughts on the Food The udon was soft and the curry was just spicy, so I ordered a large portion, but the portion was small, so it seemed to be aimed at women with smaller appetites. The curry was thick, reminiscent of European curry. In my personal opinion, the curry lacked depth; it was just spicy. My choice was a mistake. There are value sets on the menu, but it's best to check to see if they're really worth it. It might be better to order multiple individual items. The Curry set I ordered was reasonably priced at around JPY 1500 and included a Salad, a slice of Orange, and your choice of drink.
Had only drinks around 11am Had the black coffee, it was good, no complaints The establishment has cute(?) touches, nice atmosphere One toilet, has air freshener spray...

Had a quick lunch here and opted to try the Mushroom & Cheese and Vegetable curry options out of the three choices presented as the Lunch menu is limited with no Ramen, Gyoza or other dishes available. Also no Coke or other drinks available apart from strictly menu items (Tea, Coffee, Water etc.). The Curry set was not too bad for around JPY 1500 including Salad, a slice of Orange and your drink choice. Food came simmering hot like molten curried lava, but the taste was a little sweet and good. Portion size was decent and the set wasn't bad overall. Staff were friendly, helpful and polite despite our very basic Japanese and the menu also being all in Japanese. Nice, cozy atmosphere with good music.

It was the only restaurant open late at night. Food was okay. Serving bowl was unnecessarily huge as serving was small. Cozy ambiance with jazz music playing in background. We heard sound of microwave oven so possibly how the food was prepared.

Udon noodle restaurant
Tamaruya is a popular Udon restaurant located in Mizusawa, between Ikaho and Shibukawa. It's known for its hot and cold udon dishes with a variety of soups and sides, including their renowned house sesame dipping sauce. The restaurant tends to be crowded, especially during the autumn leaf changing season, but seating is ample so the wait time is usually not long. Upon arrival, guests are given a number and may have to wait for their turn to be seated.
20250126 Excellent food and nice ambience. Guests placed shoes in lockers at entrance. The restaurant is clean and well maintenance. There are ample parking lots across the street. We arrived at around 2:10pm. Though there was no queue, the restaurant was relatively full and most diners are Japanese.

I was looking for Udon shop and I saw this restaurant. We went here for lunch and arrived past 12nn. As expected, there are a lot of people waiting. You need to get a number first. After almost an hour, our number got called. There are shoe lockers in the entrance and you need to wear slippers. The place is huge and there are tatami areas and western style table. You can choose your preference once you get your number. I saw some private rooms as well. The udon noodles taste good and there are few choices on the menu. There are course meals as well. There is a parking lot across the street.

Japanese restaurant
Shimizuya is a renowned udon noodle restaurant located in Ikaho Town, Kita-Gunma County. It is the birthplace of 'Mizusawa Udon,' considered one of Japan's three great udon noodle types, with a history spanning over 400 years. The restaurant prides itself on its traditional handmade udon production process, eschewing the use of machines. The resulting udon noodles are known for their luster and chewy texture.

Day 2

North side of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the north side side of town. Start the day off with Ikaho Toy, Doll and Car Museum, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Shibukawa City Multipurpose Park. All together, your day would be filled with about 7 hours of non-stop fun.

Specialty Museums
The Ikaho Toy, Doll and Car Museum is a nostalgic journey through Japan's Showa period, featuring a diverse collection of toys, dolls, and classic cars from the mid to late 20th century. The museum offers an immersive experience with exhibits ranging from teddy bears and traditional dolls to retro console games and vintage Japanese automobiles. Visitors can stroll through the Showa Retro Park Dagashiya Yokocho, a reproduction of streets from 50-60 years ago.
This museum might be a special kind of dante’s circle of hell. As I walked through the museum I saw many exit signs but I did not exit at all. Just when you think you are done, you have entered another museum. When you exit the gift shop you have entered another museum. At the end you will find out how babies are made. A truly unique experience. This museum is definitely worth your money.
Anders S — Google review
I initially expected just a simple toy display, but this museum completely exceeded expectations with its detailed, professional curation. The collection spans multiple floors with incredible variety - toys from Japan’s cathode ray tube era when Astro Boy aired through the pre-smartphone period, complete with recreated game arcades, magazines, and snack areas that authentically capture different time periods. The second floor houses an impressive automotive collection featuring famous Japanese cars from the industry’s beginnings, racing cars, and even vehicles from Initial D, while the first floor includes British Mini models. Beyond the main exhibits, there’s an outdoor park with American movie-style posters, detailed military dioramas that war enthusiasts would love, and a European-style indoor cafe. This museum is far more diverse and engaging than it appears from outside - definitely a must-visit if you’re in Ikaho.
Minwoo K — Google review
My son adored the car collection. If you’re Japanese, you’ll love the nostalgic games. It is bigger than it looks. You have stuff toy from all over the world. You see all the meiji and showa era entertainment toys and arcades. The shop also has good things in it. It’s also interactive at some points. It’s stairs and walking so bring your baby carrier. Someone scratched our car and ran away. The staff was so helpful and ensured that we were attended to.
Pauline M — Google review
This museum offers a wide variety of exhibits, including teddy bears, tin toys, and japanese retro items from the Showa era. You can even play traditional games like 射的 and スマートボール, and we really enjoyed painting キューピーちゃん. The collection also features a wide range of nostalgic cars, including rare classic models, and I ended up spending more time than expected, enjoying every moment until the end.
KOKO O — Google review
Lots of cool and interesting things to see… However, what originally brought me here were road signs advertising a “Chocolate Factory.” It turned out to be a tiny shop in a corner of the museum selling M&Ms and other pre-packaged candy. No chocolate is made here. Like I said, it ended up being a fun experience, but I can’t overlook the false advertising.
Brandon G — Google review
This place is really funny. The museum itself has a lot of stuff from dolls to teddy bears to Japanese WWE items and amazing cars. The items have no sense and you get a tiny little doll that you can paint yourself at the end of the visit. I have been there more than once and it's always a good time.

**American Family Visiting** Stopped here as part of my Initial D pilgrimage and did not disappoint. This museum has a very large collection of teddy bears, Japanese toys, mini cars and of course the Fujiwara Tofu shop facade with replica Trueno. Lots to see and do. Free parking onsite as well as bathrooms and a cafe. A must see for any Initial D fan.
Matthew S — Google review
Went here to see the Initial D setup. But was able to enjoy the whole place as it will take you on different time periods of japan. There was also a collection of different cars, teddy bears and a whole lot more relating to toys and cars. Overall, its worth trying to visit. Especially if youll be driving in Japan.

Dating back to the Asuka period, this sacred site features a striking hexagonal two-storied pagoda and a bell tower alongside the main hall. The principal image of Mizusawa Kannon (Mizusawa-dera) is the Kannon Bodhisattva who is believed to have saved Princess Ikaho, the third daughter of the local governor, from difficult situations many times. It has a history of over 1300 years, and it is said that offering incense will bring good luck in health, and ringing the bell will bring good fortune in terms of money😊😊

This place is freakin awesome! So many cool aspects of traditional Japanese culture here. And tons of beautiful nature, including a mountain hike behind the temples and shrine that go through a very serene forest. A word to the wise, though: If you are going to ride a bike up there, you can do it but it's definitely a challenge. About 6 km up often steep hills.

Udon noodle restaurant
Mizusawa-Udon Osawaya - No. 2 Shop is a must-visit for udon enthusiasts. They offer a variety of udon dishes, both hot and cold, that are simply delicious. The side dishes like fried vegetable tempura and mushroom tempura perfectly complement the main attraction – the udon. While some prefer the cold udon over the hot one, both options are worth trying.
The best udon I have tasted. They serve hot and cold udon, and we ordered both. Simply delicious. The side dished are just fried vegetable tempura and mushroom tempura. Its all about udon.

(Translated by Google) We visited the restaurant just after noon on a weekday. The parking lot was almost full, so we thought we might not be able to get in right away, but we were able to get in easily. That's because the restaurant is incredibly spacious! 😆 The area we were guided to had about 30 four-person tables, as well as another large hall. Ordering is done via tablet. Set menus seem to be the norm, with prices varying depending on the number of maitake mushroom tempura and whether or not you order a small side dish. From December to March, they offer a limited-time menu featuring a warm udon noodle set. The udon was smooth and chewy, but not as firm as Sanuki udon. The tempura was lightly salty, but I would have liked some tempura condiments. 😅 We ordered the large portion, which was quite filling. If you're adding a variety of tempura, a regular size would probably be enough. I also ordered the seasonal fried sweet potato skewers, which were a delicious combination of taro and the sweet and spicy sauce. 😋 Some of the maitake mushroom tempura was over-fried, making it so crunchy that it hurt my mouth. 😣 This is local udon, and the restaurant is popular, so it's a great place to enjoy it while traveling. Thank you for the meal.

Unlike the udon you usually eat, it has clear white noodles, strong elasticity, and a good texture! The interior of Osawaya is very clean, and the staff are kind, polite, and helpful. There is a slight line even on weekdays, but they will guide you to your seat fairly quickly. Osawaya's Maitake mushroom tempura has received many positive reviews! It's so delicious that you can feel the original flavor and umami of the Maitake mushrooms! It's irresistible for tempura lovers. Also, Gunma's local snack "Shinkomochi" is filled with a gentle mitarashi dango-like paste, and the mochi itself is made of rice flour and is very chewy! It has a light texture, not too salty. I was satisfied with the rare dishes that can only be eaten in this area. If you are driving or traveling to Ikaho Onsen, Mt. (Translated by Google) This is a must-try udon dish when I visit Ikaho or Minakami. The noodles are smooth and glossy, with a firm texture. It's like Akita's Inaniwa udon, with a slightly less silky texture and a firmer texture instead. (I'm not a udon expert, so I apologize if I'm wrong.) I like to eat it with both the regular dashi broth and the sesame broth, comparing the two types. If you'd like to enjoy two different types of broths in the same way, choose the set that comes with two types of broth, or choose the sesame broth only. Regular broth dilutes as you eat, so many people add more as they go. The sesame broth surprisingly doesn't dilute at all, so you can savor the rich sesame flavor for a long time. It doesn't look like much at first glance, but it's actually quite filling when you eat it. The sieve the udon is served in is the opposite of a raised bottom. It seems surprisingly deep-fried. If you're not a fan of maitake mushroom tempura, this is a must-try! The thick, giant maitake mushrooms are deep-fried without shrinking, and the tempura batter is deep-fried just right, so they stay crispy even when you eat them slowly. Even on weekdays, at lunchtime, you'll often have to line up to park, and then wait to be seated. If you're a small group, you may be called ahead due to seating restrictions. You might want to try visiting during off-peak hours, or if you're a large group, you might want to let the staff know if you don't mind splitting up. Ordering is done via tablet, but the sign says, "If you don't know how to use it, you can also order directly from the staff." This is the perfect place for anyone traveling to Gunma or wanting to try Mizusawa udon. Definitely give it a try! ────────────────── What I had (prices include tax): ・Kaede "Zaru Udon and 2 Maitake Mushroom Tempura" / ¥1485 ・[Limited Quantity] Sesame Soup (single item) / ¥330 ────────────────── Kaede "Zaru Udon and 2 Maitake Mushroom Tempura": Among the various combinations on the menu, I ordered the "Kaede" set, which includes Zaru Udon and two maitake mushroom tempura! It was incredibly smooth and chewy, and incredibly delicious. I was curious about the limited-edition "Sesame Soup," so I ordered an additional serving. It had a strong, rich sesame aroma. It's worth ordering as you can enjoy the contrast in flavor with the noodle soup. I was also surprised by how large the maitake mushroom tempura was! I was amazed at the skill with which they deep-fry such large maitake mushrooms until they were crispy. I highly recommend ordering them with udon noodles. They're so delicious, you'll be blown away! 🤣 [Seating Capacity] 200 [Parking] 35 [Business Hours] Monday-Wednesday: 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM Saturday-Sunday: 9:30 AM - 4:00 PM Closed: Thursdays and Fridays [Wait Time] I arrived at 12:00 PM on Sunday. Ramen restaurant
Nestled away on a quiet side street off the Mizusawa Udon Highway, Watariya is a hidden gem that beckons ramen lovers every few years. This charming eatery opens its doors around 11:15 AM and offers an array of delightful dishes. The palate cleanser, butterbur tsukudani, sets the stage for their renowned salt ramen, brimming with fresh vegetables and occasionally enhanced by bamboo shoots and seaweed.
A really good place to eat, the miso soup was incredible and the salty one was really nice too, very light because it has a lot of vegetables. Furthermore the service was great and kind. Really recomendable.

(Translated by Google) This restaurant was introduced on the Jomo Shimbun online. It's in a more remote location than I imagined, but customers come by car, so it's not a problem. As it is called "Aodakefumi", the noodles are excellent, and the bamboo shoots are also very good. I think it is a family-run business, but the staff are friendly and it is a pleasant place to eat. They asked me if I wanted a regular portion, but the portion was more than enough. The tsukemen ramen is quite large. I think everyone is a noodle eater. I wonder what the fillings are in the gyoza. I can taste the cabbage. If it were closer, I would like to visit this restaurant. The toilets are Japanese-style, so be careful if you have bad knees. Yup, it's delicious ♡ ✔︎Gyoza (450 yen) Crispy gyoza dumplings. The flavor was just average... This time, I ordered: Miso Ramen Bamboo shoots and char siu ramen Salted char siu Gyoza The gyoza are well-seasoned and packed with ingredients. They were piping hot, juicy, and delicious. Ikaho Green Bokujo is a charming petting farm where visitors can interact with various animals, including sheep and dogs. It's a popular spot for families with kids, offering the opportunity to feed goats, horses, and other animals. While some visitors found the cost of activities to be a bit high, many enjoyed their time at the farm. The beautiful fall scenery adds to the experience, making it an ideal destination for a day trip. Additionally, there are opportunities for barbecue offers on-site.
You can see sheep and dog show in this farm. Also you can feed goats, horses, sheep and other animals. Most visitors were families with children but adults can enjoy too. All animals seemed to be well taken care of but some of them looked hungry and irritated.

We found ourselves facing a shortage of manpower, which made things a bit challenging. Navigating the area was particularly tricky for us as foreigners.
Ferdinand B — Google review
This a great petting farm to visit with the kids on a nice day. It can get expensive though with the fee to pet each animal at multiple stations though. My kids enjoyed it, so I guess the cost is irrelevant. Oh avoid the Game Center area, because once the kids gravitate towards that well, they will just want to stay there. I just tried to redirect their attention the best I could lol
Aaron E — Google review
Entrance tickets is ¥1500 (adult). There's vege for the animals for sale in the farm at ¥400/cup. Rabbit and guinea pig petting at ¥700/10mins. Quite pricey, and there wasn't much animals. Mostly sheeps and rabbits. Animals are quite well-managed tho! Clean!

Good place for kids but the opening hours are too short while the events and shows schedule are not frequent. In-door grill of beef is also good lunch. Worth to buy the combo.

It is not a very cheap place to visit, but I suppose it would be a fun way to spend time together, particularly if you have children. Parking is free but in addition to the entrance fee, every single attraction costs extra money. So if you have the time to visit every attraction, it may be worth it to invest in the all access pass. The ice cream and the moumou is deliciousness that is a must-have at this park. Walking the goats around is also pretty fun.

Museums
Hara Museum ARC is an art gallery located in Shibukawa City, Gunma Prefecture. It features changing exhibitions of contemporary art and a sculpture garden with views of Mt Haruna. The museum showcases various artworks from different countries and periods, including early modern Japanese pieces. The building seamlessly blends into the picturesque location with views of Mount Akagi. While the art leans towards the conceptual side, the museum's four modestly sized galleries make it easy to explore in just an hour or so.
Beautiful architecture, great curation, and a wonderful outdoor sculpture park. You can easily enjoy this museum for a few hours, ducking in and out of indoor exhibits, while also enjoying the outdoor air.

Interesting museum on beautiful grounds. Be warned that the price (1100yen) is quite expensive for the amount of art you'll get to see, and indoor photos aren't allowed either. The art that's there is amazing - I was shocked to have the museum to myself while seeing a Warhol, Lichtenstein, and a Kusama room! But for having such a spacious building, there should really be a couple more exhibits at least.
P — Google review
Branch of the Hara Museum in Tokyo, both focusing on contemporary art. The buildings are unassuming and blend nicely into the stunning location with views of Mout Akagi. Be aware that you have to pay at the gate just to even enter the grounds and make sure to keep your ticket with you. The art tends towards the conceptual, so perhaps not to everybody's taste, but with four modestly sized galleries, it's easy to spend just an hour or so here on your way to somewhere else or during bad weather. Great photo opportunities on the grounds and the cafe is good too!

The Yumeji Takehisa Ikaho Memorial Museum is a tribute to the renowned Japanese painter, Yumeji Takehisa, known for his Taisho Roman style. The museum is located in Ikaho, a place he cherished deeply. It showcases his modern illustrations and fashionable patterns that remain popular today. Visitors can explore the retro architecture and interior of his atelier, which also served as the setting for creating Kurofuneya.
If you are a fan of Yumeji, this should be a place you should visit at least once. 1600 yen gets you a pass to the main building featuring collections of Yumeji as well as a live music box demo and some artifacts he himself or people in the era used to use. Located in a very tranquil part of the town. It may be challenging if you don't know the language.

Kajika Bridge, located in the Ikaho Onsen area of Shibukawa City, is a picturesque vermilion crossing surrounded by Japanese maple trees. It offers stunning views of the mountains and valleys adorned with red and gold foliage during the autumn season. The bridge is a popular attraction from late October to mid-November when visitors flock to witness the breathtaking scenery. Additionally, special illuminations at night create a magical atmosphere.

Stunning autumn folliage. We visited in early November evening after 5:30pm. Many people were enjoying the scenery during this time. The bridge is a 5-10mins stroll from the shrine on top of the Ikaho stone steps. Snacks and hot beverages are available near the bridge.

Ikaho's vermillion Kajika Bridge is a must-visit place in Autumn season in Gunma. This picturesque and stunning view is a perfect background for family portraits during autumn foliage. We went up here by car and there is a free parking space near the bridge. You need to be there before 10am because many cars lined up for this parking space. Some people chose to park on the municipal parking near Idaho stone steps starting point. But we’ve decided to go here first so it is not too crowded. Surprisingly, there’s a lot of people before 10am but we managed to take beautiful pictures. There is a restroom and a small coffee stall near the bridge. You can enjoy the colorful leaves up here. We went down taking the local road for cars and went directly to the starting point of Idaho stone steps. After reaching 365 steps, we walked back to Kajika bridge and went back to our car.
Google review
It was mid April when I came and so there is minimal crowd for this very popular bridge in autumn. One usually hike up from the stone steps to get here so recommend to also do the open air onsen if you come here post a hike! If you are only here for the IG post, the bridge is quite small so it won't be easy to picture when there is a crowd.
Henry C — Google review
Having said to be one of the areas of inspiration for Hayao Miyazaki's "Spirited Away" with Kajika Bridge being a reference point for the main red bridge depicted in the movie, you can clearly see why when visiting. Although not quite as picturesque as visiting in mid-Autumn, December/Jan is still an excellent time to visit Ikaho Onsen and Kajika Bridge. Well worth the trip up and also combining a visit to the local Onsen.

I see that most people also order a portion of udon or soba, and then order a portion of tempura to share. The tempura is freshly fried on order and very delicious. The maitake mushrooms are very big, and the fried shrimps are also very generous. They are excellent and delicious. If I have to find fault, it is probably because there is no air conditioning, natural wind and electric fans are used, so it is difficult to order hot udon and soba. I see that everyone also orders cold ones, but because they are also delicious, it doesn't matter. (Translated by Google) Judging from the gate, it has a profound feeling and is full of atmosphere 💡 The staff at the restaurant were polite and prompt, and I was able to enjoy my meal in a very good mood! An assortment of 5 types of tempura costs 1,500 yen (excluding tax), but it's piping hot and freshly fried, and it's a huge portion! I think it's a very reasonable price for a tourist spot 💡 Served with crispy soba noodles. It's a shame that the soba smells so bad💧 It felt a little powdery...💧 Even the green onions used as a condiment made me feel like I was working. Wasabi is also delicious. A small bowl of wild vegetables is also nice. Is it possible to have somen with soba soup? The taste was as gentle as I thought it would be 😊 Is it unsatisfactory for those who like strong flavors? It was just right for me 🎵 At lunch time, I was able to sit comfortably without lining up, and the food was served very quickly. I was impressed. Payment was by cash or PayPay. I thought it would be convenient to have more types of cashless payments 💡 (Original)

The number of cars that can be parked in the parking lot is small, so if you have a large number of people, it seems best to go in one car. As you can see, the menu doesn't have much variety. Also, I didn't have high expectations for the taste, but I think it tastes just right. In particular, I think it's better not to order the kamaage soba unless it's really a novelty. Self-serve soba tea is available. Please pay by cash or PayPay. I recommend it to people who want to relax in an empty restaurant. (Translated by Google) Recommended for those who want to finish their meal quickly. The soba doesn't really taste like soba. The soup is a bit thin. The lady working there can be rude at times, which makes it funny, so I'll give it a 2 instead of a 1.

I stopped by for lunch before going to Kusatsu★ I went in 40 minutes before closing and it was empty, but when I looked around afterwards, it was crowded, so the timing was good (^ ^) I ordered warm Mizusawa udon! It was so delicious that I ate it with abandon. My parents got half of it with tempura, but the vegetables were excellent and everything was delicious! ! Since my daughter was there, I decided to use the tatami room! They even prepared plates for the kids! I will go again! ! (Translated by Google) As I ate in this atmospheric building, I wondered if great people also ate like this. However, the udon here is not Mizusawa udon, but their original udon. It was a bit of a disappointment. It's tempura, but I think it has a little bit more batter. I love eating shrimp tails, and while I appreciate the shrimp tails being fried with the tails open, I enjoyed the crispy texture of the fried shrimp without the batter, but it turned out to be disappointing. This is the reason for the star ⭐️⭐️⭐️. (Translated by Google) There was no signboard with the store's name, just an OPEN sign at the entrance. Locals come here for lunch. When you enter the store, go to the counter, place your order, and then go to your favorite table. There are no meal tickets, but food will be served to your table as soon as it is available. You will pay at the counter when you leave. The portion size is huge, so if you ask for the amount at the counter when ordering, they will show you the amount of rice. I took a look and then normalized it. Katsu curry is a unique black curry that people seem to like or dislike, but everyone in my family loves it. The ramen wasn't as salty as it looked, but it did taste a little sweet, so I think people will either like it or dislike it. Motsuni is quite salty, so it is recommended to eat it with rice. I think you won't have to worry about customer service if you visit as if you were having a feast at a relative's house. (Translated by Google) “Cheap, delicious, big portion!!” An old-fashioned restaurant in a residential area The most popular cutlet curry is unique. As expected from Joshu, the pork cutlet is outstanding. It also goes perfectly with the restaurant's signature black curry. Both are leading roles, a dream double co-star! is. Cutlet curry 700 yen, large size 900 yen. When ordering a large portion, they will show you the rice portion. Probably about 3 bowls of rice. There are still penalties, so It would be best to refrain from ordering out of curiosity. The size is perfect for people who can afford it. The curry roux is You can only get one refill for free. This makes me happy. The rich and spicy black curry, which cannot be recreated at home, is addictive. I can see why everyone is asking for it. Rather than eating happily, Just being a gentleman and facing cutlet curry, That's the style of the store. The cutlet curry is probably from Kano Shokudo. I want to eat there again and will definitely visit again. Gunma's large set meals are truly amazing. Note: Currently, the store's signboard has been removed and there is only a business board, so there is a high chance of seeing it for the first time.

(Translated by Google) It's a shop in the mountains, but there's a constant stream of customers. Their distinctive black curry has a runny texture and tastes more oily than spicy. It has a unique flavor. The ramen, on the other hand, is not oily, and the soup is similar to Japanese soba noodles, with a broth and seasoning that makes it seem like you're eating soba noodles. I think the balance between the portion size and price is good. Despite the harsh reviews, the staff were very pleasant to serve. As a local rule, you order at a counter that doubles as a cash register. Water is also self-service. There was a calendar engraved on the glass in which the water was poured, but the year on it was 1993. Most of the customers at this restaurant were eating katsu curry. I also ordered katsu curry, which is known as the epitome of sinful foods. The curry is what they call black curry. It has a deep, bitter flavor and the amount of rice is quite large. The katsu curry also comes with lightly pickled cucumbers, potato salad, and miso soup. It was very filling. It was good value for money and I was full. I am the Prince of Spices, Katsu Curry Baron, who boasts that hunger is the greatest spice. Thank you for the meal. (My wife had katsudon.) The amount of rice was just huge! It was probably about 2 cups. However, this is half a serving of rice, so unless you're confident in your stomach, it's probably best not to order the regular portion. The curry was dark and had very few ingredients. It was a bit powdery. The tonkatsu was about 3cm thick and was delicious. It came with 2 small side dishes and miso soup for 680 yen. It's cheap, so it's good for people who want to fill up. The taste was decent, though.
