1913 Songjeong Station Market, situated across from Gwangju Songjeong Station, has undergone a revival in recent years. The historic market street was given a retro makeover and now features trendy indie stores, eateries offering tempura, ramen, and rice cakes, as well as long-established businesses selling groceries. The market boasts an eclectic mix of cafes, pop-up stores, and specialty food shops alongside traditional vendors.
Such a nice area to have a stroll and have some local food, snacks or drinks! It really had the old-fashioned vibe which I personally loved 🩷😊
Karolina P — Google review
Hate to see the market kind of dead...not sure whether it is due to political turmoil or just out of date??? Nothing to see or street foods.
Danny K — Google review
A historic old market street with old shops selling food. Some converted to more modern cafes, while others retain their old fashion charm. Worth a visit to soak in the atmosphere and pick on some street snacks. Street parking and parking lot available nearby.
Mihwa L — Google review
They're trying their best. Some good stores and street food. The brewery was a nice surprise and really the only place besides the German restaurant that was attracting crowds.
Chris D — Google review
It's really pretty and maybe it was more lively pre-covid times but there wasn't much to do there when I went. I did enjoy the photo booth but that's all there was.
Fatema A — Google review
Interesting place. Many things to see and eat around this area
Melline G — Google review
I visited during the day and most of all the shops were closed. I think the place comes to life at night time. It's a nice place to stroll through, especially if you need to kill some time before catching your next train.
Jason C — Google review
It was a little difficult to find, but once we did, it was awesome! Go as it's getting dark and the street comes alive with a trendy yet old-school, retro feel. It's a great place to dress in old-fashioned school uniforms or take some black and white photos. Lots of yummy places to stop and eat street food as well. It's a blast!

Shopping mall
SeJung Outlet, named after a common Korean name, offers an alternative shopping experience to Chungjang-ro. The outlet features a variety of well-known international and domestic fashion brands, making it a great place to discover new styles. With its spacious layout, it's an ideal destination for a family outing on a rainy weekend. Additionally, the outlet boasts ample parking in the bustling area and even houses a family restaurant upstairs for added convenience. Visitors particularly enjoy the MLB store located within the outlet.
A spacious outlet great for a rainy weekend with your family. Good parking lot in a busy area. A family restaurant upstairs upps the fun. I love the MLB store the most.

Experience the rich cultural tapestry of Gwangju at the Gwangju Culture & Arts Center, a modern facility that showcases a diverse array of artistic performances and events. From captivating concerts to mesmerizing dance shows and compelling theater productions, this state-of-the-art venue offers an immersive experience for both local and international performers. While accessibility may be challenging for individuals with disabilities, the accommodating staff ensures a pleasant visit. Additionally, visitors can enjoy amenities such as a cozy café and souvenir shop within the center.
I'm lucky to have such an opportunity to attend a concert. I liked the performance and the management as well. There r a coffee shop and the souvenir shop inside the building. Also, u can take a photo in a separate thema photo zone. My recommendations!
Aleksandra B — Google review
Located in the centre of the city, the spacious Culture & Art centre is a gem of Gwangju. Unfortunately all the entire theaters and halls are under major renovation(craze of rich Koreans to change furniture every now and then and also take advantage of covid scenario, when public avoids gatherings). But still the complex is showing gallery of colored beautiful paintings and Avery catchy reminiscent of old Gwangju in black and white photographs. A visitor gets involved and engaged in the B&w photographs .But for me it was saddening to observe the simple culturally rich Budhisht society madly aping these west and converting the beautiful serene city to a concrete jungle.
Surjit P — Google review
The theater is grate but is quite complicated to access in with a disability/special needs family member. There is no infront parking, you must go to the underground one and then turn quite much around if you are going with a wheel chair. Staff is lovely and very helpful. The cafe place is fine!

Specialty Museums
Located near the Gwangju National Museum in Jungoe Park, the Gwangju Museum of Art is a prominent cultural institution. The museum's main building was established in 2007 and houses a diverse permanent exhibition featuring Korean and international art forms such as painting, calligraphy, illustration, photography, decorative art, and new media. Temporary exhibitions showcase works by renowned international artists like Joseph Beuys and local artists often explore Gwangju's complex political history.
Walking into the museum felt like stepping into another world. Each painting told a story, each sculpture whispered history. My favorite part was the [specific gallery or exhibit], where colors and emotions danced together. The calm music and soft lights made the experience even more magical. I left feeling inspired to create something of my own.

Gwangju National Museum, Gwangju Museum of Art, as well as Gwangju History and Folk Museum are located relatively in close proximity of each other. Visited the 3 establishment. In my opinion, they in part tell the exciting story of Korean contemporary culture and rich vibrant, albiet, turbulent history. Good place to visit for relaxation, family outing, and tourist excursions. Found staff to be friendly and courteous. However, could not find any good gift shop.

Traditional market
Gwangju Yangdong Market is the city's oldest traditional market, offering a lively atmosphere where visitors can browse and purchase local produce, clothing, and handmade goods. The market is renowned for its diverse food stalls serving delicious Korean street food and traditional dishes. It provides an excellent opportunity to immerse oneself in local culture, savor authentic Korean flavors, and engage with welcoming vendors.
Can not be missed! You’ll find here the best food in Seoul . Known for the Netflix series do try other vendors , they are equally good 👍🏻
Ioana C — Google review
This is a taste if traditional Korea, that's for sure! Smells and sights and food to buy. I've only ever gone on a Saturday morning, when more people are likely to be there, but it's not overly crowded until after noon. In fact, around 10 am, it should be fairly peaceful. You will see and smell the fishmarket, with live octopus, shrimp, crabs and varieties of shell fish. See dried sardines, shrimp, squid and pollack. Loads of freshly made kimchi and all manner of meats and fruit and vegetables can be found. You can also buy food at stalls such as kimbab, steamed corn, heoddeok, and in winter, 붕어빵(fish-shaped bread filled with sweet bean paste). Prices are quite cheap and you can enjoy lots of local food for 10,000 won. However, this seems to be a shopping focused market and there are not really places to sit and eat there. There are some cafes, and a street food stalls where there may be a table or two. But it's common for people to stand at the stall and eat fish or rice cakes and various fried foods as a sort of buffet. As a foreigner, however, you might not feel comfortable doing this (unless you want the experience, of course). Across from the food market, there is the clothes market, where you can see hanbok and boots and bed clothes. On the upper floors you can see curtains and find the bathrooms. As with all traditional markets, you will feel a sense of time warp, like stepping back 20 or 30 years into the past. Yangdong market is fairly run-down, and parts of it feel very sad. Seeing the collections of pots and pans and baskets and brooms crammed into a small space will make you wonder how long they've been there and who needs or wants such things anymore. These are remnants of a byegone era. And it's bittersweet. But it's a good experience if you have the chance.
Lisa C — Google review
Everything you need is here - including international grocery store, kitchen, furniture and all your cooking needs from vegetables to meat to side items(barchans) as well as live animals. The place is bit old and you get that vibe. Saw live chicken, ducks, goose in a cage - bit of cultural shock - something I haven't seen since I left Korea in the 80's but definitely an eye opener. I would recommend you walk around within the core alley ways of the market, the furniture areas weren't worth exploring.

You see many dreams shining in fron of you and hanging on every structures everywhere , some collapsed , some emerged brand new , other constructed ,which appears to have belonged to one of your dreams you have made over the past decades and asked by the strong wind that is it possible you ' ve got to do one more whish as soon as possible before it is too late and you agreed on it and they are asking continually which could be more hardship to let you get back to a dream waiting to be done , having been stopped in younger period , and you stumbling like an alcoholic ,worring you are in a less power to reach a new dream , blaming aloud you are not the first but a second to higher level classes and for you it was good but for others it was not good who have sought to have more materials than you about housing , cars , food . You have found enduring success by their so many enterence and you have failed to give them awards by their anticipation not connected to their expectations even though you have searched in the markets in finding good materials to add more valuable fame to food and they have heard that , adding a much more admiration to your fame .They have came and spent money in adding to your profits and you have regularly felt their gratiitute and under their commitment to keep your business soaring you are determined. Updating the food along with many execelent goods is your choice .They are mobilized by proud of claims of food to a resturant shown like a brand name advertisement in a TV with unbelievable words that their things are magic to cure health problems and they are presenting in TV by doing so constantly for decades and what it belives us makes us standing in line at a store to buy the products without putting our studies on them to terminate or respect the ad on TV . They sit in the restaurant waiting , and hoping to get a real meal known for the best taste in town , with it their dreams should be done for one of their whishes they are dreaming for long time in all the world , experiencing bad or good at many places having kitchens to meet their demands bulgeding out like a bloonoon leading them intio a rich world that higher level classes have been living ,with the food that has been told as one of the most valuable gifts capable of attracting all people in town to the restaurant, they are really appreciate as they got one of their dreams come true at a resturant by food really delicious and attracted and made them cling to it every day . though so many whishes are left . When a dream has been done, they pursuit another one and they are seeking one more dream when previous one has been done ,with many whishes awaited in other fields to make a life living in abandon in search for anything , leaving a creature having many luxurious itemes . They are living with dreams already made or to be done . What was disappointing them was it was not a good dream to make them happy .It was bad one to struggle others with so many luxurious brands wearing and striding in as they are best in the streets .Unrevealing luxurious clothes is smart enough seen in the markets rather than giving more elegant , expensive ones found in next to doors in cheaper prices and in the post on walls in the restaurant they have found something a little good of best , having taken a lunch here to ensure that the food was a little be true and were only welcomed by them who preferred it but by others it was ignored , though it it is very good and delicious , so the owner must have prepared it that everyone will like as stark contrast of previous one . It has been boiled in 24 hours on a stove to survive in competition with others to give customers energy with the food . They entered witnessing and encountering as soon as they sit at the table one of enormous, belligerent food to find your appetite again in the summer having lost it.

While this restaurant operates 24 hrs, it's perpetually bustling, often resulting in a wait. To join the queue, you'll need a Korean phone number to register at the machine located at the restaurant's entrance. Unfortunately, lacking one, I couldn't add my name and opted for takeout instead. However, the takeout experience left much to be desired. Unlike typical Korean takeouts, the food wasn't ready-to-eat and required additional boiling. Moreover, a rice ball is not included in takeouts so I had to buy one from a convenience store. The portion size was generous, almost sufficient for two meals. Regarding taste, it was decent, but I must confess, nothing particularly remarkable. Despite its popularity, the overall experience failed to leave a lasting impression.
Hyojung K — Google review
I visited here a long time ago and I expected that taste and absolutely I was satisfied the taste. The soup and sundae were unbelievable food in the restaurant. Steak house
Family restaurant
Outback Steakhouse, Gwangju Sangmu, is a lively Australian-themed eatery that specializes in hearty steakhouse fare and seafood. It's a popular choice for family gatherings and special events due to its warm atmosphere and kind staff. The menu offers an array of delicious dishes, but the bushman bread appetizer and baby pork ribs stand out as favorites among patrons. The bread is so delectable that some customers even visit solely for it.
Im from the US. This Outback is better than any in the US. Steak was amazing. Service was great. Well done.
Han C — Google review
Everything was overpriced. We ordered pastas and steaks. The pasta sauce was a little blend and the steak was not cooked right. I guess our server was new? He looked very confused and kept asking the manager questions about our orders. I'd rather go to a non-chain steakhouse.
Jay E — Google review
Wasn’t overly impressed. Went on a Sunday evening yet for some reason they were busier than expected. Once we got to the table, discovered the menu bears very little resemblance to the one in the United States so they were few food offerings I wanted. Me and my dining partner ordered yet the steak came out so extremely rare it had to be sent back for additional cooking (10 minutes later it was still more than rare IMO). Before we were completely finished with the meal the server was asking us to leave despite the fact that there were several empty tables in the restaurant including one 8-10 feet from our table. Prices for food here were easily >50k won per person or more. Expect you might be finishing dinner at the hotel room though.

I often go to this restaurant when there is a special event for my family. All the staff that works at this restaurant is kind. I like all the dishes at this restaurant, but I prefer the bushman bread for an appetizer and the baby pork ribs. This is a must try in Gwangju! Go with an empty belly a few friends. They don't have a place for solo diners.

Despite the low ratings, we gave this place a the benefit of the doubt and were highly disappointed. Not foreigners friendly - not expecting staffs to communicate in English but they failed to even attempt to answer our queries in our limited Korean. Just left the order slip on the table and left you to your own devices. Seating is tight like sardines packed. Duck was bony and tough, stew was bland - didn’t taste anything like duck. It was a thick tasteless broth and sure didn’t warrant that price tag. So, it’s a thumbs down for us.

They serve bbq galbi as well. Half duck is more than enough for two. Comes with red sauce that tastes like yong tau foo gravy.

Duck soup - One of the best soup in cheon-nam area. Characterizes the local food very well. Very thick and savory. Not spicy + doesn't smell bad at all. Designated parking space available. Tables are only on the floor A whole duck soup for 4, Half duck soup for 2. Rice not included so order separately Eat the vegi first, then have the duck (it is very tough at first, but gets tender as it gets cooked). You get one free refill for the soup. Stir it every once in a while to prevent it from sticking & burning. Highly recommend it!!

Best place to go for oritang in Gwangju (If you don't have time to get to yoojinjeong in damyang cause that's the only other place that rivals youngmi)
