Uruma in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Uruma, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Uruma offers a mix of coastal scenery and Ryukyuan history, with clear waters, coral reefs, and relaxed island communities connected by the scenic Kaichu-doro causeway. The nearby islands of Henza, Miyagi, and Ikei are known for their beaches and marine activities like snorkeling and diving. Inland, you can explore Katsuren Castle Ruins, part of the UNESCO-listed Gusuku Sites, which sit on a hill with sweeping views of the coastline. Compared with Okinawa’s main resort areas, Uruma tends to feel quieter and more local, while still being an easy day trip from Naha or Okinawa City.
With favorites like Bios Hill, Ryukyu Mura, and Cave Okinawa, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Sakae Ryoriten and King Tacos so you can get the best taste of Uruma while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Ryukyu Mura

Theme park
Ryukyu Mura is a recreation of a traditional Okinawan village, offering cultural performances and hands-on workshops. This open-air museum showcases old-world structures and provides insight into the culture, traditions, and history of Okinawa. Visitors can enjoy eisa performances, traditional music, and dance shows while exploring historic houses. The park also features local artisans making delicious donuts and tea for visitors to sample.
A taste of Okinawa Culture. What a treat! First time in Okinawa and wanted to learn about the culture in a compressed amount if time. From the music to learning about their every day lives to seeing a water buffalo, and sampling fresh made sugar cane juice and Awanori, this was a tremendous experience. Highly recommend!
Jason T — Google review
A memorable place to experience Okinawan culture firsthand. You can explore traditional village houses and enjoy the energetic Eisa drum dance performances, a great spot to immerse yourself in the island’s heritage.

Very Good experience to learn Okinawa history via dancing, singing shows; local cuisines in budget prices; 6 wine tasting for just ¥1000 (including 3 award winning wine) ; local tea and traditional snack tasting; butterfly and other animal farm。 Saw local secondary school students visiting there.

Big time history buffs this is your spot! I rather enjoyed this one. We came in the late afternoon at 2:30 it wasn’t super busy, but mostly everything is in Japanese some main things on signs are in English. The shows are all in Japanese. There are 2 shows, at 3 intervals between 9:30 and 1600 the last entry is at 1600. The first show is the song and dance the second show is the drums and dance For the second show If it looks like rain they’ll move you indoors past the “habupit” Watch out for mosquitoes they’re abundant today when we came (10/11/2025 - 10th November 2025) I do have one qualm though…. The way the water buffalo is being kept. And the smaller enclosure for the goats…. Breaks my heart a little the way some animals are kept. Could’ve had a bigger area that they can graze but everything else was enjoyable. Long okinawan history. Very interesting.

It's a nice place to visit and immerse yourself in Ryukyuan culture. Some might find it a little disorganized but I kind of liked the messiness, as it brings an authentic and friendly feel to the place, as most touristic sites may feel too artificial nowadays. The staff are all very friendly, and give a feel that they live there in the village, as even in their time off they are just strolling around the houses, sitting around, playing sanshin and talking with one another! Again, some might not like it because of that, but I think this gives a more human feel to the place. TLDR is: it might not be for the more fancy-liking luxury travelers, but for everyone else is at least worth dropping by!
Alexandre O — Google review
This is my second time here. There’s not much to do and the park is pretty small — you can see everything in less than an hour. But I still enjoyed the traditional show at the theater!
Tanapong K — Google review
I was hoping to learn more about Okinawan culture in Okinawa. This was really the only place we found that seemed to show that culture. Yes it's a tourist attraction, but could also be called a historical village. Something like Williamsburg in Virginia or Greenfield Village in Michigan. Staff was very welcoming and generous with sharing about the culture.
Jonathan S — Google review
I loved that the craft activities were outside of the paid area. I really wanted to paint, so it was such a relief to do it without having to enter the park and pay the entrance fee, which can be a bit pricey. There are also free rental strollers, which made everything even more convenient.

Bios Hill, located in the picturesque hills of Nago City, is a captivating nature park that celebrates Okinawa's natural beauty and diverse wildlife. Covering a vast area, this theme park offers a perfect blend of entertainment, education, and outdoor exploration. Visitors can enjoy interactive exhibits, scenic trails, and exciting attractions suitable for families and nature enthusiasts. The park features lush botanical gardens showcasing Okinawa's subtropical forests and orchids.
Fifteen years ago, when my children were young, I visited Bios Hill in Okinawa, and it remained a very good memory. I revisited Bios Hill in 2025, and maintained the concept of a place where I met the life of nature on a large site, and managed the natural scenery well. I listened to the commentary on a small cruise ship, looked at the animals and plants of the lake, walked through the natural garden. You can tour the lakes and subtropical forests by cruise or canoe, observe animals and plants closely, and communicate with them
JinHee C — Google review
A Short and Sweet Adventure – Totally Worth It! I spent a lovely day at BIOS Hill during a trip to Okinawa, and it was such a beautiful and worthwhile experience. Even though it was quite hot, the orchid tour was peaceful, short, and absolutely charming. While I didn’t understand the Japanese narration, the beauty of the surroundings spoke for itself. One of the highlights was seeing the water buffalo and enjoying a performance by a traditional Ryukyuan dancer — such a special cultural touch. I also purchased a gorgeous orchid to gift to my friend I was visiting, which felt like the perfect souvenir. While I didn’t bring any kids, I could definitely see it being a great spot for families — interactive, gentle, and full of nature. If you’re looking for a relaxing, culturally rich half-day adventure, I highly recommend BIOS Hill!
Farria S — Google review
Came around opening time. The area is green and everything is made out of wood. Really nature friendly but when it comes to activities there really isn’t much. The entrance ticket includes the boat ride already which was nice however there is nothing to see in the river except a little water buffalo hidden and fenced in a corner and then a few plants. After that you have the choice of getting in the buffalo cart tour but it’s $20 for each adult. Food inside is very overpriced. Once you have done all of this you can go pet the goats and feed them some carrots. There are also some other stalls with water buffalo in them that you can go see. Place is mostly good for very small children who just want to run around in the green areas. Normally wouldn’t rate this low but since every other attraction in Okinawa is literally the same as this one, it’s nothing special. Botanical gardens is honestly better in my opinion. More animals to see and better activities
Lani R — Google review
Took a boat ride and hopped on a water buffalo cart—such a unique experience! There’s a bit of an entrance fee, but it’s totally worth it. The place was super quiet, probably because of the cloudy weather. It's a well-kept, immersive botanical garden and farm!

Orchids, orchids, everywhere!! Great spot for a nice afternoon visit. Amazing walk amongst the orchids, if you have kids, there's also a petting zoo- amazing spot!!, and best of all- not busy at all (on 1st November). Great visit!

Yen💴 Only!! It is 1800¥ per an adult. It was a nice way to spend a Sunday!! The park is a good size of walking and exploring variety of paths. The boat ride comes with the ticket so we just got on for a small rover tour. Tour is done in Japanese only. It came with information in English on a paper. We saw a water Buffalo and an eisa dancer. The park has a fun play area with toys,, things to climb, pet and feed goats and a pig! Followed many trails found cool spots to chill and swings!! I enjoyed walks through the jungle! Plenty of parking on site. Signs in japanese and English. Staff are super friendly!!!
Yuuki A — Google review
Fun and clean park great for families. Offering giant swings, "treehouse" style forts, pontoon boat rides, animals (to include goats!), and much more. A little cafe is in the park with soba, taco rice, tea, and ice cream. Vending machines and a gift shop also available. Plenty of free parking at the entrance of the park. Visa/card is accepted for ticket purchase, bring yen to buy food for the goats (200 yen)!
Taylor W — Google review
Beautiful place to walk. We were blessed with overcast and a little rain to cool us off. The boat tours focus on local plants and history. Overall, it's a great place for kids. It's kinda expensive, but it's worth visiting at least once.

Cave Okinawa, located in the north of Uruma, is the largest limestone cave complex in central Okinawa. Visitors can explore centuries-old stalactite formations along elevated walkways that are colorfully illuminated. The cave has undergone significant improvements over the years, with well-lit pathways and comfortable trails making it easily accessible for visitors. Despite the potential slipperiness due to dripping water inside the cave, it offers a cool escape from the summer heat of Okinawa.
Just explored Cave Okinawa and I'm blown away! 😍 The limestone formations are stunning, and the underground scenery is breathtaking. I loved wandering through the cave on my own, taking in all the natural beauty. The atmosphere is so peaceful and serene. If you're visiting Okinawa, definitely add Cave Okinawa to your list - you won't regret it! 😊

There’s a lot of parking space., and it’s free. The admission fee is ¥1,200 for adults and 600 for kids. You can pay in credit card or cash(yen) no need to get advance ticket. You’ll walk a little bit before the entrance of the cave. There’s a bit of ascending stairs but it’s worth it. We went on a weekend so there’s other people waiting behind you. They open at 9 so I suggest to go early if you want to soak in the illumination and good photo spots. It’s a short walk inside the cave compared to other cave experiences. It’s good for little kids.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A Beautiful Hidden Spot in Uruma City! The Cave Okinawa was such a cool surprise! It’s tucked away in a pretty quiet part of Uruma City, and while the area feels really peaceful and remote, it’s actually not far from the main road at all. The walk to the entrance is easy, and once you’re inside, it’s a comfortable path that slowly climbs until you come out on the other side. The cave itself is amazing—there are a few big open rooms and some incredible rock formations that really make you stop and take it all in. It’s such a unique, almost magical place to explore. And just when you think the experience is over, there’s a cozy little café waiting for you at the exit where you can grab some food, a drink, and even a few souvenirs. I’m really glad I made the stop and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Okinawa.
Wayne J — Google review
This place was simply incredible! It surpassed even Universal Studios, Disney, and any other amusement park I’ve ever visited. The most unique aspect of this place is that it’s a real cave, and my family had an absolute blast. My daughter particularly enjoyed it. Unlike other places, there’s no need to wait in long lines. You can ensure your phone is charged and take a picture of the little treasure chest. When you’re done, show the picture at the café, and you’ll receive a secret present. Overall, you can have a fantastic time here. However, we were a bit nervous the day before because there had been an earthquake. You can imagine how we felt! One of the highlights of our visit was the bats in the cave. They were friendly and quite impressive. There are many stairs, but they’re not too overwhelming.
Giovanni A — Google review
Very cheap activity to do with the family and amazing cave. I would not rush going through it. Really enjoy looking at everything and soak it in. If you rush it, you can get through it in about 10-15 minutes. You can buy tickets at a window of the entrance.
Sok K — Google review
We had a great time visiting the cave. There is a short walk to the cave entrance from where you park and get tickets. They have a "treasure hunt" where you look for hidden treasure chests, and if you find all 3 you get something at the gift shop. We missed the first one though, they are numbered so you know which one you found. It is roughly 8 inches long by 4 inches deep and high. If you come to a big platform, that is a good hint you are near one, at least for the second and third chest.
Clyde B — Google review
A serene place but a little small and prices of the tickets are a little steep for this. But good to go and see once as they have some nice structures and it is really within a forest. But there is a lot of climbing so may not be suitable for elderly.
Lydia K — Google review
Fun, but short cave to explore. Not very huge so take your time walking through. ¥1200 per person. Affordable and a nice way to spend an afternoon. Had lunch at K Pit afterwards for some authentic American burgers 👌

Perched on a cliff with sweeping ocean vistas, Katsuren Castle Ruins in Uruma City is a 15th-century stronghold that was once home to the formidable lord 'Amawari.' This site played a crucial role in the prosperous overseas trade of the Ryukyu Kingdom, engaging with China, Southeast Asia, and mainland Japan.
I've visited a few of the castles around Okinawa and this is one of my favorites. It's a little walk up to it but worth it. It's small and won't take too long to explore so it's good if you plan on seeing a couple of other place in a day. And parking was pretty convenient also. Oh and go see the museum too!
David B — Google review
Small castle ruins site which is a world heritage site. Sadly only able to see the remaining walls. Offers a great view on the top of castle. Free parking is a short distance away.
Jon P — Google review
We parked and bought tickets from the building on the right. ¥1200 for the 2 of us adults. We walked over to the castle and rode the golf cart up to the top. The scenery from the top was beautiful and the castle itself was interesting to read about on the placards. There are lots of stairs, so bring actual shoes not sandals. Afterwards we rode down and went inside the building to view the small museum portion. There was a video about the castle and the history of what happened there. There was also a little miniature setup of how the area was used during that time period. It was hot though, don't forget your water and hat or umbrella! Bring some ¥ to toss down in the cave on the top to pay your respects.
K M — Google review
If youre new to the island and want to explore, id say try this as your first castle/ruin to visit the tickets are 600 yen which include the entrance to the ruins and access to the exhibit at the visitor center which has relics dug up from the ruins and has a scaled down version of the whole ruins. Shows alot of history and indepth into the culture of why the castle was there. The walk up to the ruins is short but some areas are steep but they do have stairs. They also have a cart service to help those that cant walk well shuttle up and down the steep parts of the hills.
James C — Google review
One of the best castle ruins in Okinawa. I heard the sunrise is beautiful there, but I yet to go and watch it
Brian S — Google review
If you want to explore all the castle ruins in Okinawa, I think you should start here! (before going to the others.) On site there is a museum telling stories about Okinawa Ryukyu kingdom and its kings/heroes. So you have achance to learn about the owners/builders of these castles. Thr ruins is on top of the nearby hill - you can walk or ask for a golf cart to take you up to the middle of the way up. Up there you have a good view of the nearby towns. The tourist office/souvinior shop on site is very nice, yet quite small. So you learn a bit plus a good stretch, highly recommended.
Ronrapee L — Google review
Extraordinary place. Not only do you get to explore the ruins which have magnificent views, there is a museum with interactive consoles, a short movie that explains the history and many displays. Highly recommend!
Freya'sdottir X — Google review
Inexpensive ticket for entry and plenty of parking. The museum at the beginning is very cool and contains loads of interactive information. The walk up to the ruins is beautiful and seeing everything up close was amazing. The view at the top is gorgeous, if you're in the area I highly recommend stopping by.

Sakae Ryoriten is a tranquil establishment that offers matured sake and traditional dishes featuring ingredients of the current season. This charming venue showcases exquisite Okinawan cuisine, which is executed flawlessly and boasts the highest caliber among local fare. The somen noodles are exceptionally delectable, while their rendition of pork trotter is extraordinary - tender and gelatinous on the inside, yet crispy on the outside. It is strongly recommended to visit this restaurant despite any potential challenges in reaching it.
All I can say is that this restaurant is absolutely amazing. The moment we walked in, we were extremely impressed with the ambiance and welcoming staff. Every single dish was unique and tasty, in addition to the wide selection of delicious and well priced drinks. Everything all together was great value and the staff were very helpful and even ordered us a cab home. This place is a MUST visit if you are in Okinawa!!!!!
Harry Y — Google review
1) If you’re looking for a beautiful ambiance and a clean restroom, this place fits the bill. 2) The food portions are quite small for the price, and I was puzzled by the fact that we had to share from a single plate instead of having individual servings. 3) The taste was just okay. We can have better meals for similar prices elsewhere. 4) The water isn’t complimentary. There was no prior notice about the charge, and I wasn’t shown what kind of water it was that cost 450 yen. I don’t mind paying for water, but a headsup would have been appreciated. 5) They don’t allow separate payments (it wasn’t busy when we were there). Even in casual izakayas or other fine dining spots, separate payments are usually not an issue. 6) The waitstaff were good, but the reservation and payment processes could be smoother. Overall, if you enjoy a bit of a challenge in your dining experience, you might like it here :)

There is no other restaurant in okinawa that compares to this. Pro: - diverse menu - traditional - delicious isn't even enough to describe it - environment /mood / romantic - Staff - parking and location Cons: - Hard to make a reservation (do not show up without one) - extremely popular with locals so hard to get last minute reservation (worth it to call 48 hours out) Before I became a regular and I could not find someone who spoke Japanese to make a reservation for my wife and I. I would drive there just to make a reservation. I miss this place so much!

Lovely lovely high quality local Okinawan cuisine. The food here is extremely well executed and probably the highest level of local dishes. The somen is insanely delicious, and their rendition of the pork trotter, is just out of this world - soft and gelatinous inside but crispy on the outside. Highly highly recommend uou make a visit here no matter how difficult it is to get here

Really nice food for the price. A bit on the expensive side. The service was very good and the place felt very cozy. I visited on a weekday but even then it was hard to get a reservation 2 days before. I would suggest to reserve a table a few days in advance. Some of the food was slightly too salty for our taste, which is why I'm giving a 4 star instead of 5.

Taco restaurant
For more than 18 years, I've frequented King Tacos in Katsuren. Since relocating to their new facilities, there have been both pros and cons. On the positive side, they continue to serve their delectable tacos, taco rice dishes, and other enticing mains and sides. The service is speedy and courteous, facilitated by a prepayment machine. However, one drawback is the absence of previous in-house dining options available at their former establishment.
8/2023 Finally, our first KinTaco..! Get tickets at the machine, wait a bit, maybe get a juice at the vending machine and your number will be called in a few minutes! We ate at the beach on (?) Kaichu Road. Sooooo good. Lettuce kept falling out. Yum.

I wasn’t expecting much for tacos in Okinawa. If it was better than Taco Bell then I would be happy. So I ordered the four tacos with cheese and to my surprise they weren’t bad! It had a ton of lettuce and a full tomato slice that threw me off but the meat was tasty. My favorite part was the taco shell, it was incredibly tasty and had a great crunch. If I could do it all over again, I’d bring my own sour cream, Taco Bell hot sauce and call it an Emperor Taco!

Located in between the White Beach Naval and Heshikiya Port. This taco spot serves it up. There is a ticket machine upon entry with photos so you can order your meal. Once you get to the counter the lady will take your ticket, ask questions about things you would not like on your item, and give you a pickup number/ticket. When it’s time for pickup you’ll collect your item to either eat on premises or take away. The ladies are the cutest and a very well working group. From order to pickup I would say it was about a 15-min wait. This time included 2 prior orders as well.

Overpriced! For 4 tacos it went from 700 yen to 800 yen to 1000 yen in a short time. This is just greed and I won't be going back. There a much more affordable option for tacos near courtney.

I loved it! The vending machine made ordering a breeze, and the staff were very friendly! The tacos were delicious. I only stopped for a snack, but next time I'll definitely order more! Also, check out the farm behind the store. Very scenic and relaxing.
