Minamiuonuma in 2 days

If you only have 2 days to spend in Minamiuonuma, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Minamiuonuma offers classic “snow country” scenery, with heavy winter snowfall, mountain backdrops, and ski areas such as Joetsu Kokusai and Maiko Snow Resort. It’s famous nationwide for Uonuma Koshihikari rice, which you can sample in local dishes along with regional sake from breweries like Hakkaisan. In warmer seasons, terraced rice fields, hiking routes around Mt. Hakkai, and traditional townscapes such as the Shiozawa area showcase rural Japanese life. Onsen facilities and small local museums round out a quiet, slow-paced alternative to Japan’s big-city destinations.
With favorites like Buffalo, Zenibuchi Park, and Yaironomori Park, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Sakai-ya Ramen House and Sekiyama so you can get the best taste of Minamiuonuma while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Ski & Snowboard Areas
Ishiuchi Maruyama Ski Resort is a small ski area that boasts well-maintained trails and a snowboard park. Visitors can also rent equipment and dine at multiple onsite options. Despite unpredictable weather, the resort remains an enjoyable destination for families with its convenient location near Tokyo and great facilities.
Great place for snow sports an hour away from Tokyo. One day pass around 60€ and many restaurants on spot with normal prices. Many slopes and slope ranges

Night ski was fun. In Yuzawa, I prefer playing snowboard at this snow mountain. The ski track is pretty fun, but needed to go up high to the top. Beautiful view. The snow here isn’t powdery though. It’s quite hard. But overall, I had a good time here.
Sean T — Google review
I would say this is the go-to-resort when you are in Yuzawa. Especially if you are advancing from a beginner to intermediate level. The runs here are diverse, fun and easily accessible. It feels like a neighborhood ski resort and perhaps that’s one of the many charms it has. The family and I enjoyed the various FnB venues it has and there’s sufficient signage (and maps) around to keep you informed. It is also relatively inexpensive and there are also options of different rentals to choose from. I think this is the best ski resort in the Yuzawa area.
T F — Google review
Always a favourite, shuttle bus really easy to follow and get to & fro echigo-yuzawa, routes are fun, view is spectacular especially during sunset. Not a huge range of routes, but should keep you busy for a day or two. Loads of rental options. Lots of food options on the slopes Get your passes before hand via kkday e.g. to save quite abit.
Jem ( — Google review
I had mixed feelings for this ski resort, some staff were good but some were the worst among Japan in my eyes. It was especially bad when we took a shuttle to the guesthouse near the Hatsukaishi area. When we got off, the shuttle driver stopped us from leaving and said it's the wrong station. Despite being a foreigner, my Japanese level is well enough for all the communication to be in Japanese. I tried to show him the location of our accommodation by using Google map, the driver said "there are so many hotels around the area and I DON'T CARE where you stay" in a really rude way and refused to look at my phone. I was convinced by the driver, what else could you do if a local insisted that you are going the wrong way? So the 9 of us moved our baggage back onto the bus. Later we found out it's the wrong station the driver brought us to, I tried to ask the driver to take us back to the station we initially got off, which was just 5 mins drive away. And he refused to talk to me anymore by saying "I don't understand you" (but I had been talking to him in Japanese like for 5 mins). He just told us to talk to the staff inside the resort centre and ran away with the shuttle. The staff inside told us that we initially got off at the correct stop. And it took us almost another hour to get back to the right place for the waiting time of another shuttle etc. This happened on Jan 23, 2025. Have to say other shuttle drivers and the centre staff were good. But that particular shuttle driver was awful. There are some additional problems with the staff controlling the ski lift. I stayed mostly around the Hatsukaishi area. Most of the time when I or friends fell from the lift while getting off, unlike other Japanese ski resorts, almost all the staff was indifferent to stop or slow down the lift and it was really dangerous. They just made gestures or yelled at you to leave ASAP.
Linda Y — Google review
A very nice place to ski for intermediate or above levels, not many ski-in ski-out hotel can choose
Hanson S — Google review
Very nice and beautiful ski resort nearby Gala Yuzawa station. There are so many free shuttle bus to take in every station. You can take the Shinkansen from Tokyo here. Very convenient for transportation. The ski course are so wonderful and huge. People here are not as many as in Gala. And restaurants serves great dishes. So come here and enjoy it!
G — Google review
It is very big ski resort and has many shops and hotels inside or along the line of ski lanes. The lough it self is modern but not as please as Gala. For advance skier is recommend because it more variety and good for tourists as they have many restuarants too.

Nice view on top of the mountain. Don’t need to buy tickets in advance. Perfect place for family trip :)

Purchased the round trip ticket in advance and collected the tickets there with QR code effortlessly. Most visitors are here to ski while I am here for the views only. A 7 minute ride to the destination. Spectacular scenery and convenient location (within walking distance from the JR echigo yuzawa station). Highly recommend;)

We visited in autumn so no snow yet. I imagined it would have been a great place on winter. Nonetheless there is a spectacular view of the town from a coffee shop there which is very relaxing. Small activites at autumn with the gliding var which my kids enjoyed. The garden would have been great if it was springnor autumn. We still had fun though.

We went at the end of october and the leaves already turned yellow/red, it was beautiful! Perfect for a weekend getaway staying in a ryokan and walking through the woderful alpine routes (they are 3 levels). You can buy the tickets for the ropeway also directly in the ryokan you will stay (it's cheaper). The air is incredibly pure and fresh over there and the views stunning!

ECHIGO YUZAWA STATION

Train station
Echigo Yuzawa Station is a convenient stop on the Joetsu Shinkansen line, easily accessible from Tokyo. It's renowned for its natural hot springs and has become a popular ski destination due to its accessibility from Tokyo. The station serves as the main gateway to the area and offers various activities year-round, including hiking, camping, skiing, and snowboarding. Additionally, it's a confluence of the Shinkansen train and local train network in Niigata.
A day trip from Tokyo to explore Yuzawa offers a quick getaway, just 70 minutes from Tokyo Station on the Joetsu Shinkansen Toki. This train is faster than the Tanigawa, making fewer stops along the way. Inside the station is CoCoLo Yuzawa, a plaza with a variety of shops & restaurants offering local specialties. Next to it is Ponshukan Marketplace, specializing in a diverse range of Niigata food & sake — an excellent spot for picking up souvenirs. Just outside the station’s West Exit is Echigo Yuzawa Onsen Street, a charming area lined with shops & restaurants, perfect for experiencing the town’s hot spring culture.
L C — Google review
It's good station, I went to Echigo Yuzawa from Otorii Station, just to see snow. There are many seller here to buy some merchandise
Muhammad P — Google review
I've passed through this station three times now (all in the summer), and while small, it has a lot of stuff to do. There's a huge area with gacha capsule toys, several restaurants, a really long area filled with souvenir shops, and even the sake onsen. Lots of accommodation in the town, and it's really easy to walk around outside on foot (in the summer).
Grant M — Google review
Steam rises from rooftops; snow falls like feathers. Yuzawa hums with laughter and clinking sake cups — the warmth of strangers sharing winter. The train rests here longer, as if to taste the hot spring air. Tourist Tip: Famous ski and onsen town. Station has Sake Museum “Ponshukan” with tasting stations. Excellent overnight for snow or autumn leaves. Try onsen eggs and rice crackers.
Stray L — Google review
Easy access to the snow & ski resorts around. The station has good connectivity through multiple options of bullet trains - Shinkansen, shuttling between Tokyo and Niigata. The station building is accessible for strollers and wheelchairs. Also, there is a beautiful food and souvenirs area inside the station, a convenience store too. Right outside the front of the station is a hot water feet dipping place.
TAHIR C — Google review
Best places to go see snow if you want to go by Shinkansen. The only snow resort next to a shinkansen station. Only 2 hours from Tokyo and very easy to reach to. Also Genbi Shinkansen starts from here to Niigata which is an amazing art-sy kind of Shinkansen so it is fast but every compartment is designed by a different designer so it makes the ride fun as well. Highly recommended to go there. If you don't want to ski and just see snow conveniently from Tokyo, this is easy and faster way to reach. Also the station has souvenir shops and snow gear for rental of you do plan to go skiing. Lockers are available to keep your stuff if you want to just go out for fun. Food is also extensively available. Great place.
Pankaj R — Google review
This station is the confluence of Shinkansen train (bullet train) and also the local train network in Niigata. The local train network in Niigata does not have automated gantry for stored value cards, eg seca. Stored value card can be used to purchase single trip tickets at the machine. When entering to the platforms, passengers need to show the ticket at the ticket counter to receive a stamp. Upon arrival, to present the stamped ticket to the ticket counter and will be collected. So it is still manual. The Shinkansen has its own automated gantry for its tickets. The station has a big area of duty free shopping for the local produce in Niigata. There is also a visitor information centre and postal service. There is a cafe with bakes and also a standing noodle bar. A convenient store is also present.
Trotting H — Google review
Train station with lots of restaurants and shops selling local produce. The ponshukan (sake shop) with many sake vending machines is a popular novelty though kids are not allowed. Free shuttle busses to various ski hotels and taxis are available just outside. A few restaurants too.

Maiko Snow Resort is a winter sports destination that offers skiing and snowboarding, equipment rentals, and a hotel with dining facilities. The resort can be reached by taking the Shinkansen and shuttle bus. Despite being busy on weekends, guests have plenty of choices for brand-name snowboard rentals, with around 30 minutes wait time for the gondola. Once at the top, visitors can enjoy hours of snow activities in the soft white powder.
We took Shinkansen + Shuttle bus to arrive Maiko Snow Resort at around 10am, and it was already full of skiiers ~ the snowboard rental provided lots of choice of different brands. As it was a busy weekend, the wait for gondola was around 30min. However, once reaching the top you can spend hours there.

It's my first time do the snowboard at japan , this time is really good , the price is cheap but had a beautiful view , you have to go here when u have a time ,trust me.
Kevin U — Google review
Very crowded on weekends. It seems that they have very cheap tickets for high school & college kids, so they probably make up 90% of the visitors. You could spend more time waiting in lines than actual skiing/snowboarding. The ticket line took almost 30 mins. The gondola queue also took almost 1 hour, and even longer in the morning. The lowest/main lifts also took about 20-30 mins of waiting in line. The rental at the ski center is very small & not really able to handle the crowd. They just make you to pick your own wear, boots, board and line up carrying everything for 1 hour in a cramped space in order to check them out. Probably best to get rental from the shops just outside the ski center.
Js — Google review
My first winter trip here was awesome. View is great. Good for beginner. There is group and private ski class with rentals. Food inside resort is affordable and delicious. Open from 7am to 10pm.

Waist deep powder snow. Great for all levels. Lessons available. The lift placement is well thought out. Though they often have some lifts closed for seemingly no reason... Not crowded. Staff at the rental shop we're very unhelpful though. I was disappointed by that..
David J — Google review
One of my favorite resorts in Yuzawa. Lots of off piste riding to be found as well as varied ungroomed courses. Good terrain park, cheap tickets not too crowded. Also they have 500 yen nighters! If you need accomodations there are tons of hotels, inns nearby.

Joetsu Kokusai Ski Resort is an expansive winter destination that caters to all skill levels with its vast network of ski runs, halfpipes for snowboarding and a kids' snow park. The resort boasts a stunning view and numerous restaurants and snack areas for guests to enjoy. While the facilities themselves may appear dated and in need of renovation, they still provide a comfortable stay with buffet options available.
What a wonderful place! This is second time i came here for ski Excellent reception as usual , great view and delicious food. Although the hotel it's a little bit old decor, but still an awesome place to ski. Highly recommended !
Daniel H — Google review
We stayed three nights in January. The room is spacious but a bit old and required renovation. Dinner, bkf and lift pass are included. Food variety is limited (no sushi) but when considering the price, it is as expected. The major problem are the ski ground. There is insufficient signage to show direction, and you dont know what level of slope the liftchair will take you to. There are insufficient chairs for you to change boots. Three persons share one locker with only one key. Overall, the hotel is okay for the price charged but the ski facilities needs some improvement.
Tony C — Google review
90% of the time spent on ski lifts than actually skiing. Not worth it. Our legs and knees hurt because none of the ski lifts have footrest like in Europe. If you’re gonna make people sit on ski lifts all day at least have footrest. Most of the ski lifts also don’t have safety bar. It’s a beautiful resort but it has the strangest layout where to get somewhere you need 2 even 3 connecting ski lifts. Worst part other than the non existent footrest is the fact that the ski lifts are extremely slow. Slowest ski lifts in the world. Better to ski somewhere else.
N K — Google review
Too many ski lifts, felt like a lift resort than a ski resort. Should be renamed to Joetsu Mendokusai. Have to pay for parking and also not many food options even though there are tons of resting cabins.
Yaqub M — Google review
I really liked this huge ski with fantastic view. But the signs were not good enough.
David C — Google review
A good resort for beginners and strong intermediate skiers. Very old school. Lifts tend to be a bit slow, and the layout is quite annoying, with a long transition from the front part of the resort and the rather nice hinterland. Scenery is very pretty, the broad layout providing beautiful views. Showing its age but definitely worth a visit.
Ian B — Google review
Nice ski resort with many slopes which are interconnected to the other resort too. They have night skiing too but only for 2 slopes.
Div — Google review
I'm going to be honest. The resort itself is outdated and in need of a remodel. If that does not bother you, it is a nice stay. The buffets are okay. The snow itself was beautiful and the family had a great time sledding and skiing. The beginner hills kind of lead to advanced ones. Hard to learn if it's busy. Overall a fun trip.

Shiozawa Juku Bokushi Street, located on the old road connecting Gunma and Niigata, has been restored to showcase its historical charm. Once a dilapidated postwar shopping street, it has undergone significant improvement with many old shops relocating to new buildings. While there are some tourist-oriented establishments such as cafes, ramen shops, sake breweries, and souvenir stores, the area manages to maintain an authentic atmosphere without being overly touristy.
Enjoying beautiful town walk through the Shiozawa-juku! From the web site; Shiozawa-juku flourished as a post town along the Mikuni Highway connecting Edo and Echigo, and developed as a production center for specialty textiles such as Echigo Jofu (Important Intangible Cultural Property) and Shiozawa Tsumugi (Traditional Craft). It is also known as one of the heaviest snowfall areas in the country.

Quite an interesting spot. Well maintained. Interesting shops. Not 100% "観光地" feeling - it still has a sense of "生活感". Only need a few hours. Plan to see with other attractions in the area. Late afternoon might be nice when it gets quiet. Then head to an onsen nearby.

This is a street on the old road between Gunma and Niigata that has been restored to give an impression of how it looked in the past. It was just a rundown postwar shopping street, so it is definitely improved … also many of the old shops moved into the new buildings. That's why although there are some tourist-oriented shops like cafe, ramen, sake brewery shop, and souvenirs, it's not really super touristy. People looking for something to 'do' may be disappointed, but I found it nice to spend an hour wandering around.

Sakai-ya Ramen House is a delightful spot that captures the essence of traditional ramen with a modern twist. On my recent visit, I was greeted by a warm and friendly atmosphere, despite the bustling crowd on a Sunday afternoon. The sweetness of the vegetables is very delicious and goes perfectly with the miso soup, and the noodles are smooth and bring the soup with you. The chashu is also grilled and aromatic and delicious. The measures against corona infection were perfect so I could eat with peace of mind. I think I'll try the soy sauce flavor next time. (Translated by Google) I think it's close to the old style, but the soy sauce has a sweet taste and is sophisticated. I visited the place just after 11:40, and it got more and more crowded after that, and there was a queue. I think the wait and the crowded parking lot guarantee the taste. There was a large sign that said water was self-serve, but even though she was busy, I was impressed by the kindness of the lady who was able to respond to my loud calls for water, please. Thank you for the meal. Nestled a bit away from Ishiuchi Station, Sekiyama is a hidden gem that promises an unforgettable dining experience. With its cozy atmosphere and friendly service, this local eatery offers generous portions of homemade-style dishes that are both delicious and budget-friendly. The menu features a variety of options, including the highly recommended Fillet Cutlet Dinner and flavorful Champon, which has quickly become a favorite among visitors.
Came here after reading good reviews that 'everything is good' in this restaurant & I agree 100%. Everything we ordered was super delicious & in big serving portion. We had Pork Fillet Tonkatsu, Katsudon, Champon, Gyoza, Fried Tofu, Fried Chicken Wings & Karaage. Champon was really tasty & my personal favorite. English menu is available. All of us had such an enjoyable & satisfying meal. Highly recommend!

This restaurant is a little away from Ishiuchi station, located two stations north of the Echigo-Yuzawa bullet train station. This makes this place a little LESS crowded than other outlets, but when I visited here on Wednesday at 6 pm, I had to wait 30 minutes to enter the place, and it took 20 minutes for the food. The food is homemade style, tasty, and low cost. I recommend Fillet Cutlet Dinner (the first choice on the menu)!

(Translated by Google) Sekiyama Shokudo in Minamiuonuma, Niigata Prefecture. (202508E) Located along National Route 17, near Ishiuchi Ski Resort. This restaurant had caught my eye while searching for lunch in the area. I arrived 10 minutes before opening, and three cars were already waiting in the parking lot. I arrived on time and ordered the Sekiyama Champon and the Chicken Cutlet Set Meal. [Sekiyama Champon] It wasn't like Nagasaki Champon, but more like a thickened version of the champon toppings. This choice is dangerous in the summer; it's too hot to eat. [Chicken Cutlet Set Meal] The chicken breast is completely lean, which is a delight for women. However, it's not dry and is juicy. First of all, the rice had a slight jar smell. To be honest, that's not something you'd expect in Uonuma, a rice-producing region. The portions of both the ramen and the set meals were small, and the prices were generally on the high side. I think customer satisfaction would be higher if they increased the prices and increased the portions. The current setup doesn't balance the taste, price, and quantity. To give an example, I wouldn't want to come here after skiing when I'm hungry. The taste isn't as bad as people say, though. I didn't want to eat the expensive, bad food at the ski resort, so I looked for a restaurant outside, but there was nowhere to go, so I had no choice but to head north. I wonder if it's like this everywhere around here? I visited Uono no Sato during the Fuji Rock season as I couldn't find a taxi to my hotel. The Japanese menu was difficult to read, so I had to order based on pictures. Fortunately, the English-speaking staff were incredibly helpful not only with ordering and using the restroom but also with calling my hotel and arranging a pickup. This option wasn't available through email, and I'm grateful for their assistance as it saved me from walking an additional 30 minutes through the mountains.

If you're on the hunt for a delightful Italian dining experience, look no further than Makitoishi. This charming restaurant has garnered a loyal following among locals, and it's easy to see why! Their crispy oven-baked pizzas are simply irresistible, featuring unique toppings that tantalize the taste buds. The hand-made tagliatelle served with Bolognese sauce is another highlight—chewy and bursting with flavor.
A popular Italian restaurant that uses fresh locally grown produce. Lunch special is very cheap that included a fresh salad, small plate of spaghetti, pizza and dessert. Although atm there is no English menu Maki to Ishi is currently updating their website that will include an English menu. Highly recommend this restaurant and is now my new favourite. You can also buy local food to take home such as hemp nuts, hemp oil, garlic oil, salad dressing, pasta plus more.

The appeal of this pizza is that it has toppings that you wouldn't normally eat. This time, the black mushroom pizza has a strong, rich flavor and is delicious! Muikamachi Hakkaisan Ski is a charming ski resort nestled in the picturesque Yuzawa-Ishitaruyama Ski Area of Niigata, Japan. This destination is perfect for both skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts, featuring narrow yet thrilling slopes that cater to those seeking steep descents and moguls. While it may not boast an extensive variety of runs, the available trails are more than sufficient for a satisfying day on the mountain.
Hakkaisan is a mountain I have been wanting to snowboard for many years. We didn’t get a powder day but could imagine how epic it would be on a powder day. We were able to duck into the trees and off to the sides and still find fresh even though it hadnt snowed for a few days. We counted about 30 other people on the mountain.

Recommended by a snowboard instructor in Mitsumata as a go-to place when the weather is bad in Kagura. It was pretty nice and not crowded at all (Sunday today). Just wish that the ropeway was a gondola instead because they let way too many people on during busy periods (there are temperature checks and need to wear a mask or face covers and can't talk). Also, the lifts are very slow. But once you get up to the top, you can enjoy a long run to the bottom.

Nothing attractive about this place: difficult to access by public transport (i.e. 3-4 buses a day from the closest train station, 10 km away), I would say it is not beginner friendly, as there are few slopes, gondola was quite crowed in the weekend. The worst part: they asked us to wear masks and refrain from talking (What?) In the gondola.

(Translated by Google) This was my first visit, so when I arrived at the parking lot, I couldn't see the entrance to the building because it was long from side to side, and there was no information board, so I didn't know if the entrance was at the end of the road, at the back, or at the front. . I thought the front would definitely be different, and when I looked at the satellite photo, I saw someone coming from the back, so I guess the entrance is at the back. That's what I thought, and I was right. The parking lot has a long, vertical structure that is difficult for first-time visitors to understand without an information board. The road from No. 17 has few ups and downs, and I think you can go there without any problems even with a 2WD studless car. The parking lot was also cleared of snow. If you open the homepage and show the picture posted there, you will get 20% off the 500 yen admission fee. Photography is prohibited inside. I watched the Youtube explanation video posted on the homepage beforehand, but it was terrible. Several local junior high school students give explanations, but their tongues are poor, their voices lack firmness, and their lack of practice makes them unbearable to listen to. Especially boys. The exhibits are very nice and worth seeing. One of the best parks in the area. A giant stage provides shade in summer and is a popular place to set up base for the day. There is a big pond and a few streams flowing around. The bbq area has brick BBQs which can be reserved as well as a sink for washing. There are a selection of different climbing frames for kids and some trampoline-like bouncy cushions. There are also a few giant balls around which kids can borrow and play with. Masses of space to run around and tire out little legs. There is an interesting little museum in the far corner. The winery is just over the road for wine tasting or a delicious lunch, and the Yummy gelato shop is a short walk away if cold refreshments are required.

Nature & Parks
Zenibuchi Park is a charming oasis located on the outskirts of Muikamachi, nestled against the backdrop of Mount Sakado. This delightful park features a serene lake where families can enjoy feeding ducks and koi fish, making it an ideal spot for children. A well-maintained path meanders around the landscaped grounds, which come alive with vibrant cherry and plum blossoms in springtime. While there are no play structures for kids, they will surely delight in tossing bread to the fish.
Everything blooms in its own time.
Twoding K — Google review
A good sized park with central pond and large koi fish to feed at the back pond. A peaceful park to take a stroll in and have a picnic. No play equipment for children but the kids would enjoy feeding the fish but bring your own bread/fish food. I visited in early September and it was a hot and humid day but I feel it would be more pleasant and prettier to visit in spring or autumn.

Near muikamachi station…takes about 20 minutes from the station…very beautiful …specially in spring ….for sakura and green landscapes
Ashim L — Google review
Senbuchi Park is a really nice little park on the outskirts of Muikamachi. Mount Sakado rises up behind it. There is a small lake in one corner of the park and if you take some bread the kids can have a ball feeding the ducks and carp. A path leads around the outskirts of the carefully landscaped grounds and it is a popular place to see the cherry and plum blossoms in spring. There is also a small museum to a local historical figure in the car park.

Snow-sports resort for skiing, snowboarding & sliding, with rentals, a school & a hotel with dining.
These slopes are great!!! Perfect for beginner, advanced beginners, and intermediate. They have a beautifully relaxing forest type green run that hits the spot for me. Parking is free and there’s an onsen, kids room, and a few restaurants. Super relaxing for a Monday ski trip.

It's a big snow resort. With all the levels from beginner to advance beginner, intermediate and advanced.. Nice place.. recommended
Amro M — Google review
Good resort for first time skiing for kids, has a snow elevator to make repeat trips easy for them. Also a sledding area. The main runs are good for beginner and intermediate snowboarding or skiing.
Alan M — Google review
It's OK! A very small resort, maybe good if you are a beginner or a child and don't need many runs. There's a magic carpet lift for small children to the top of the sledge area(Need a ticket) . The restaurant served good meals quickly. The staff were polite and helpful. The line for the ticket office was more than a half hour wait at 10.30am.

It’s a good place for beginners and kids. Kids can enjoy playing snow sleds for free except paying 1000 for the escalator.

Hamburger restaurant
Heaven's Cafe, or ヘヴンズカフェ, is a delightful culinary gem that brings a taste of America to Japan. Run by an American expat and his Japanese wife, this charming eatery offers mouthwatering American-style pizza alongside gourmet burgers and hot dogs. Nestled in the picturesque Uonuma/Minami-uonuma area, diners can enjoy stunning mountain views while savoring their meals. The friendly staff adds to the welcoming atmosphere, making every visit feel special.
The staff can speak really good English, and there were a lot of nostalgic menu items like brownies that can be hard to find in Japan. The vegetarian menu is pretty small however, for vegetarians the choices are pizza, curry or fries. The food was good though, very reasonably priced and quick.

The restaurant has English menu: Pizza, Hot dogs, burgers, French fries etc. I tried Pizza and onion fries. The taste is good and ambience is also fine.

I expected really good, but I got even better! Excellent service, excellent taste! 5/5, would highly recommend! The Fijan burger is my favorite so far! Tastes like it was made with extra love! The owners are so kind and will pray for you for anything you need. They see many prayers answered after they pray and I just recently saw a lady in that cafe that came in with knee pain get completely healed of it after prayer. Ask them for prayer!
Ryan D — Google review
Definitely the most delicious gourmet burger in Uonuma / Minami-uonuma area. Besides the food quality, this place has very beautiful mountain view, facing the Route 17. The chef and staff are friendly and kind. The only reason I took one star out is that relatively this is among the best rather than the single best, considering many gourmet burgers in Tokyo and elsewhere. But this place is definitely the best at least locally. Highly recommended.

Little Hokkaido is a lively izakaya in Niigata, offering a variety of traditional Japanese meat and seafood dishes along with local sake and spirits. Situated in Minamiuonuma-shi, a charming valley area known for heavy snowfall during winter, the restaurant provides a stark contrast to the bustling city of Tokyo.

We stumbled across this shop while looking for dinner. Kind hospitality. And the recommended dishes are delicious. ! We enjoyed this delicious dinner. Recommend to everyone.👍 Ps….there’s a carpark beside the restaurant

The day we visited the food was uneven. While the tuna bowl and sashimi were good, the uni in the sushi was low quality and the avocado in the salad was spoiled. The service and atmosphere were nice but the food is more important.
Lee-Bath N — Google review

(Translated by Google) I was recommended to try the Honkidon, so I came here to try it. It seems to be a restaurant that serves delicious fish. Anyone who likes fish roe will be raving about it. I had the Wasabi Pork Bowl, which had a refined flavor. My friend told me to focus on the rice, so I savored it slowly, but it seems my palate prefers Uonuma to Aizu. Buffalo is a culinary gem that specializes in grilled meats, offering an impressive selection of high-quality dishes that are sure to tantalize your taste buds. The attentive staff enhances the dining experience, making it perfect for both solo diners and family gatherings. While prices can be on the higher side and drinks aren't complimentary, the exceptional flavors make every bite worthwhile. For those special occasions, consider indulging in their specials; however, sticking to the classics often proves just as satisfying.
Absolutely delicious with fantastic staff and a beautiful venue. Not cheap but great value for the quality of the food and service.

A great place to find grilled meat. The meat is high quality, delicious, and has a wide variety. The staff is attentive. The price can be a bit high, but there are no free drinks. However, the taste is excellent and it's suitable for both solo and family gatherings.

This renowned eatery is a must-visit, offering an unforgettable experience with its exceptional cuisine and top-notch service. If you're in the vicinity, make sure to give it a try.
One of the highlights of our Niigata trip, and one of the best sushi courses I've ever had. A combination of excellent seafood and local Niigata/Uonuma ingredients.
Cipta H — Google review
One of the best I have ever had. Very accommodating, especially to one of us who does not eat raw food. Chef and staff were all very friendly and the atmosphere was relaxing. We were served approximately 19-20 courses each. Great value and selection of beverages.
Aysa C — Google review
The food here is delicate and beautifully balanced — not the usual heavy, overpowering flavors, but a thoughtful interplay of subtle tastes that blend seamlessly. For the price, the quality and quantity offered are exceptional. The storefront is charming, and inside, the space feels intimate and cozy, seating just nine guests. Service is both tactful and warmly sincere. The chef is clearly passionate about his craft; despite the language barrier and us being likely one-time visitors, he took the time to explain each course through photos and gestures, making us feel genuinely welcomed.
