Unzen in 3 days

If you only have 3 days to spend in Unzen, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Unzen is a classic Japanese hot-spring resort town set on the forested slopes of Mount Unzen within Unzen-Amakusa National Park. Visitors come for its atmospheric onsen baths and the dramatic “Unzen Jigoku” (hells), where steaming vents and boiling pools showcase intense volcanic activity. The surrounding highlands offer scenic hiking, cool summer temperatures, and autumn foliage, plus views toward the Ariake Sea. Historic connections to early Christianity and nearby Shimabara add cultural interest to a mainly nature- and relaxation-focused stay.
With favorites like Unzen Jigoku, Asahi shokudou, and 焼肉牛花, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Asahi shokudou and Green Terrace Unzen so you can get the best taste of Unzen while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Unzen Jigoku, often referred to as 'Hell Valley,' is a captivating destination where visitors can explore the mesmerizing landscape of sulfuric hot springs and fumaroles. As you wander along winding paths, the air is filled with the distinct scent of sulfur, and steam rises dramatically from the ground. This geothermal wonderland offers unique experiences like steaming eggs in natural hot springs at Unzen Jigoku Kobo.
One of the few places where you get to see nature singing fire and ice together. The fumes from the hot lava evaporating the water and the snow covered terrains in Feb is a sight to behold. Plan for 45 mins at least. Wearing shoes with spikes would be safe. Normal shoes can slip on the snow covered paths.

amazing views and lots of cats(´ 3`) we got here late so we didn't get to see any attractions but we still saw the views and they were amazing! i'd say the only downside of this place is the smell. it has a strong smell of rotten eggs that you really can't ignore, but i guess thats something you really can't change. i'd definitely recommend this place if you're in shimabara. even for a teenage girl like me, the place isn't boring at all!! (pictures focus mainly on the cats, sorry lol.)
Stella — Google review
Honestly it's so amazing and beautiful and beautiful. And it's free! I almost thought it's not worth coming to unzen just to see fumaroles, because I saw them in Hakone. But it's 100% worth it. They are so interesting - they're loud, they sputter and make a ton of noise, the mud bubbles are so interesting to watch, and the cats are MARVELOUS! You'll never meet such sweet wonderful cats. Especially ones who live on a volcano.
Alana — Google review
Interesting place worth visiting together with other places on this peninsula. It's less impressive then Beppu, but it is more authentic and less like an amusement park. Admission was free, parking 500 yen
Bjorn B — Google review
Don’t miss this geothermal national park if you’re in Nagasaki! No entrance fee and not crowded. The place is fascinating, with lots of hot springs and sulfur vents. But it’s not just about witnessing the natural beauty—the real highlight is learning the history behind it. Many years ago, before it became a national park open to the public, this area was associated with tragedy and suffering. It was once a place where Christians were thrown in to die, which is why it’s called “Unzen Jigoku,” meaning “hell.”
VJ — Google review
The South island of new Zealand is better. This is only 4* but seeing all the cats at dusk makes it 5*. The cats are super friendly and you can go up and pet most of them. Was great walking around at dusk and at night time it changes again. Highly recommend you stay nearby.
Karl C — Google review
Interesting spot if you’d like to learn about volcanoes but I thought the natural sulpheric smell was too strong. Other than that, was a nice day trip to visit
Jacky N — Google review
We stopped here on our way to Nagasaki. It is an interesting place with lots of potential. We enjoyed the place, but it is a pity that a little effort is made to make it as good as it can. It looked like there was a lot of old construction and piping rubbish left behind which detracted from the experience. It wouldn't take a lot to improve it and make the site to look more natural (less concrete and more discrete pipes). Despite the above, it is still worthwhile a stop if time permits. It is one of a very few sites that is still free (hope it stays that way).

The Unzen Vidro Museum is a spacious museum showcasing glass products on its first floor, where visitors can explore exhibits without an entrance fee. The museum also offers a hands-on classroom for trying out glassmaking, although reservations are required. On the second floor, there is an additional charge to view the treasure collections of high-quality glassware and other valuable items.
(Translated by Google) On a trip to Unzen, my wife and I visited the Vidro Museum of Art as a feast for the eyes as we are interested in Western antiques and also own Tiffany lamps. The building is a Western-style building and is splendid. The first floor is a free souvenir corner with stand glasses, glass ornaments, accessories, and lamps. Photography is OK. The second floor is an exhibition corner and photography is prohibited. As you follow the route, you will first see the aristocratic rooms such as Gustav's Room, Baron's Room, and Rothschild's Room. I was overwhelmed by the luxurious and luxurious furniture. Next, there were numerous lamps, goblets, vases, etc., and I was impressed by their intricate and delicate decoration. On the way home, I went to the souvenir corner and bought a pair of glass pieces to commemorate my trip. We had a meaningful time. I knew it was here, but I didn't have the chance to go, so I didn't go there, but I won an admission ticket at a certain place, so I decided to visit as a boost. There is a parking lot underneath the museum, so you don't have to worry about it even if it rains. I lost track of time and was fascinated by the unusual items that you don't normally see, such as large wall clocks, unusually shaped vases, and glasses that change color when exposed to light. At the time of my visit, a rose exhibition was being held, and I was captivated by many paintings. At the end of the route, there was a notebook where you could write down your impressions, and there were impressions from people who had come from outside the prefecture and overseas. The staff is very courteous. My husband and I bought a present for my father-in-law, and he smiled and said, ``I hope he'll like it,'' which left a very positive impression. For someone like me who loves making things, this place seemed like a treasure trove in the creative genre, and it ignited my desire to create. There are still things I'm curious about, so I'm planning to visit normally next time. Day-use onsen
Unzen Onsen is a charming small town known for its traditional inns and natural hot springs, as well as a Buddhist temple. The onsen resort offers very hot water and features luxury hotels with hot springs, along with three public baths for more affordable soaking options. Similar to Beppu, Unzen is famous for its scalding "jigoku" (hells) hot springs and is home to one of Japan's earliest golf courses dating back to 1913.
Excelent place to stay and visit famous gejzers. Good walkpaths and beautifull forest.

Unzen Nita Pass is a stunning destination just a short 20-minute drive from Unzen, offering breathtaking natural beauty throughout the year. Each season brings its own charm, from vibrant azalea blooms in spring to fiery autumn leaves and serene winter fog. Visitors can take a scenic ropeway ride to the summit of Myoken Mountain for panoramic views that are simply unforgettable. While there are no dining facilities at the top, it's advisable to pack snacks or enjoy a meal before or after your visit.
Great drive to the top of the mountain. Pay minimum 100 Yen and have fun driving the twisty one way road up to the view point. Stop by the view point and enjoy the great view of the area. Nita Pass is also the trailhead to hike up Mount Fugendake. Great views on top of Mt. Fugendake. Totally worth it.

Drove up to the very top. The weather was great with slightly over casting with light cloud. The view still was nice and breezy wind. No resting area as to dine to eat so you will need to bring with you or before or after you visit the pass. Most people hikes however if you dont wish to you may purchase the rope way ticket either one way or round trip. This pre summer season you get to view the "tsutsuji" azalea flowers surrounding the mountain.

The Unzen ropeway is a great place to visit during all seasons. There is only one mountain road up to the top of the mountain. On the weekend it gets pretty busy so you might be stuck in your car for an hour or so waiting for parking. Make sure you use the restroom before heading up the mountain, because there is no where to turn around on your way up or down.

The Unzen Ropeway is a popular tourist attraction that offers year-round valley and mountain views. The ropeway consists of two gondolas and an observation deck, making it an ideal way to spend the day high up on a mountain. Despite its old buildings, the staff are helpful and it is not too expensive. The ride provides stunning views of the surrounding mountains and forest from several viewing platforms.
If you love nature and fantastic views, THIS IS FOR YOU! If you want a beautiful view without do a lot of work I would recommend taking the rail car up to the view of Mt Fugen and Mt Unzen. BUT if you don't mind a nice 1 hour 40 min hike to the top of Mt Fugen, I 110% recommend doing the hike. Bring water and good tennis shoes or hiking boots.

A must do if you are in this part of Kyushu and visibility is good. Views over the sea and Shimabara are stunning. I guess you can see Nagasaki if the visibility is perfect. We did not have to wait to get into the cable car. It is a old school system but it works fine. it takes like 10 minutes to get to the top, where you can walk up to the observatory. You can also stay at the station level and enjoy the panorama as well.

Syokudo and Teishoku restaurant
Asahi Shokudou is a cozy and welcoming eatery run by a kind and hospitable elderly lady. The restaurant operates with only one person, so patience may be required during busy times. Their simple ramen is priced at 500Yen, while the katsu rice set costs 900Yen - both offering respectable quality for an affordable price in the Unzen resort area.
The food was delicious! We loved the gyosa (best ones we've had on our trip so far!). A cute elderly lady welcomes you at the door. No English menu but one with pictures available and easy to order :) The Chanpon was great as well. Great value for money. Thank you!

Restaurant is run by a lovely older lady. We ordered katsu curry, ramen and soba. We were all happy with the food, it was delicious:) The food came out quickly, and the prices are good. I'd recommend eating there if you're in the area

Rly nice ppl especially the granny 🥰, the food was srsly gd (katsudon), best katsudon ever tasted, runny egg delicious in top and gd consistent crisps with the katsudon when eaten hot. The atmosphere is old and traditional, which gives authentic vibes. Highly recommended this place! The 3 stars is a scam, trust.

Incredibly charming showa-era vibe here from the environment to the food. Like many others, I was invited in by the little old lady at the door, and was utterly charmed by my experience. No frills, but a perfect quick meal in a unique environment. I had the cutlet curry and it was delicious. No English menu but the menu had pictures so it would be very easy to order even if you didn’t have any Japanese proficiency.

Very homely eating house operated by a very hospitable old lady. She is on a one-person operation so patience is needed during peak hours. 500Yen for a simple ramen, and 900Yen for a katsu rice set. Quality of food is respectable and very cheap for Unzen resort.

What an exceptional experience. A very warm and welcome diner to rest at after a day of traveling around Unzen. The host was a very kind and charming old lady who happily greeted us. The charm of the diner is the feel of this time capsule that has captured Japan from decades ago and hasn’t let go. The food? Obviously made to order dinners, emphasis on homestyle flavors and comfort food, and a price that can’t be beat.

Friendly elderly lady. As we didn’t speak Japanese and the lady not English, google translate helped us and it all worked out well. The food was very, very good! And far away from being expensive.

Green Terrace Unzen is a charming restaurant that offers delicious food and excellent service. Located in a picturesque setting near the hot springs, this establishment provides a warm and welcoming atmosphere for its guests. The staff at Green Terrace Unzen is incredibly kind and helpful, always going above and beyond to ensure a pleasant dining experience. They are particularly attentive to dietary restrictions, accommodating those who cannot eat wheat by providing special meals not even listed on the menu.

A delightful gem in Unzen! The curry was rich, flavorful, and among the best we’ve ever tasted. Paired with homemade Unzen honey lemonade and pudding for a sweet end. My wife, daughter, and I felt truly welcome. Warm service made it a family meal to remember.

We stopped in here for a late lunch after a day of adventuring through the hot springs. Our waiter was so incredibly kind and helpful throughout our meal. In addition, my daughter cannot eat wheat and the chef made her a wheat free meal that wasn’t even on the menu. We were so appreciative. The food was absolutely delicious! I highly recommend this place! Thank you for your kindness and amazing service!

Nice restaurant. Because we don’t eat meat, we were offered omu-rice (rice, omlette and ketchup) and potato cheese and vegetable gratin (w/o pork). Taste was good. Chef specially came to ask our preference and also later to confirm if food was OK. Thank you.

Visited during lunch time hours in winter 2020 with family. Famous restaurant located in the onsen spa town next to the local information centre. It has parking for car drivers. Pros: the beef sets were great. had the pork katsu and beef stew. Really liked the curry of the pork katsu and the beef was tender and nicely braised. It was during the winter season, so not a lot of visitors in unzen. You can have all the restaurant to yourself. Overall a great place to eat in Unzen

The soba noodle shop 六兵衛茶屋 千々石店 offers a distinctive and captivating dish called sweet potato purple udon. This unique creation is not only appetizing but also highly recommended. (Translated by Google) A long time ago, when a great disaster called the ``Shimabara disaster'' occurred, the entire Shimabara Peninsula was hit by a great famine. ``Rokubei'' is a local dish that is said to have been devised by a person named Rokubei as a way to survive such times. This local gourmet dish, ``Rokube'', is a udon-like food made by grinding sweet potatoes into powder, mixing them with yam, etc. Since the ingredient is sweet potato, the flavor is slightly sweet and the noodles are pleasant to the touch. This Rokubei Chaya serves Rokubei in a shiitake mushroom-based bonito soup, and I think the perfect balance of flavors between the noodles and the soup is absolutely delicious. Among the menu items, “Gobo Tenrokubei” is especially recommended! However, since the store is large and only two people are managing the food, it takes quite a while to serve the food at lunchtime. Therefore, we recommend that you arrive with plenty of time to spare! Shimabara is the only place in Japan where you can eat "Rokubei", so if you are in the Unzen/Shimabara area, please come and try it 🎵 (Original)

(Translated by Google) I ordered a large portion of Burdock Tempura Rokubei for 1,500 yen. I was torn between a regular portion and tempura musubi. Next time I'd like to try some rice ball-style dishes. Rokubei is a local noodle dish from the Shimabara Peninsula and Tsushima region, characterized by its unique "extruded noodles" made from sweet potatoes. The ingredients are sweet potato flour, which is made by steaming and drying sweet potatoes, mixed with local vegetables like yam and green onion. The noodles are then kneaded and formed into a ball shape, then extruded using a mortar and mold to create the traditional noodle-like texture. There are various theories about the origin of the name, but one theory is that it originates from a practical dish created in Shimabara as a preserved food due to the famine and climate of the Edo period, and that the name "Rokubei" comes from a legend related to the headman of Fukae village. The basic way to prepare it is to knead the preserved flour into balls, roll them out thinly to make noodles, and then add them to soups or stews. The simple sweetness and subtle aroma blend well with the soup.Nowadays, it is actively served as a local dish in restaurants and tourist spots.

On May 1, 2020, I visited the Onsen Shrine Office, which is situated near the Unzen Hells. The shrine boasts goshuin stamps with unique designs depicting Onsen Shrine, Myoken Shrine, Fugen Shrine, and a pair of persimmon trees. Despite the unfortunate circumstances caused by the corona pandemic, I made sure to document my visit thoroughly. Moreover, visitors have the opportunity to explore Shimengu Mini Goshuin at the shrine office.

According to the Unzen tourist information site, it is the head temple of the four hot spring shrines around Mt. Unzen. Originally, it seems that there was a promenade that led from ``Onsen Shrine'' to ``Oito Jigoku.'' I visited around the fall of 2024. It seems that the route used to be to go shopping in the shopping district, visit the hot spring shrine, and tour hell, but now it seems like the route is to go back to the main road from the shrine and start around "Seishichi Jigoku" and then tour hell. When I returned home and investigated, it seems that this was caused by a landslide that occurred on August 13, 2021. I thought it was three years ago, but it seems that safety measures are difficult due to the fragile terrain of volcanic ash. I think there are various factors such as the lack of labor in the construction industry and the rising cost of materials, but I hope that safety comes first and that it becomes widespread as soon as possible. Mountain peak
Mount Unzen, located in the Unzen Amakusa National Park on the Shimbara Peninsula, is a captivating destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts. This active volcano offers dramatic scenery with its mysterious landscape and sulphurous smoke emanating from its caldera. Hiking trails of varying difficulty levels wind around the volcanic area, providing adventurers with an enthralling experience.
Wonderful hike! The clouds were covering the view but then lifted and the views were amazing. You get really close to the volcano!
Jason W — Google review
As a volcano enthusiast, I really enjoyed my time in Unzen. Mt. Unzen is infamous for the 1991 eruption that got a lot of international media attention. There are several ways to enjoy the mountain currently. Unzen is a collective name for several different peaks located next to each other. On day 1, I climbed Fugen-dake peak (which used to be the highest point before 1991 eruption). To climb it, I went to "Unzen mountain information center" (right next to "Unzen Jigoku" Hells) and took a taxi to Nita toge pass (3000¥). It was a non-technical hike taking little more than an hour to reach the peak directly. On the way up I heard some growling animal sounds, so I wore my bear bells (although I don't think there are bears in the area). From the peak I could see 'Heisei Shinzan' the new highest point of the mountain, which is a lava dome formed during the 1991 eruption. We can see it very up close and also see the smoke from the lava dome continuously coming out from the vents. On day 2, I visited the city of Shimabara, on the other side of Unzen and checked out the Unzen Disaster Memorial Hall (an amazing museum to learn about the 1991 eruption) and Onokoba Mudslide Prevention Museum & Observatory from where we can see the other side of Mt. Unzen which is picturesque.
Maharshi R — Google review
Mt. Unzen killed 43 people in a 100mph pyroclastic flow during an eruption on 03 June 1991. Katia and Maurice Kraft perished on that fateful day, along with colleague , Volcanologist Harry Glicken. See Werner Herzog's documentary "Into the Inferno".

Beautiful-looking place. When it blows quite hard, the sulfuric smoke will rush and cover you in its warui nioi hahahaha. People just casually walk by. Maybe they’re tourists too. Definitely a must-see if you came all the way to Unzen for this. Across the street from these photos there’s a staircase; it’s probably a better viewpoint for looking at the steam.

Chef and the hostess were amazing and super friendly, despite our limited Japanese. Menu is straight forward, but I would highly recommend the ginger pork...or pork tempura. Super tasty. Owner also gave us a paper craft. Haha. Super precise and fun.

Local Japanese restaurant run by old couple. Various set menu are available. Cash only.
CH T — Google review
A very at-home Japanese restaurant, the old couple have been running this restaurant for more than 45 years. They have good tempura and Donburi(rice bowls) etc. and even have vegetarian options. I had a vegetable tempura donburi. You can see the chef cooking food in front of you when you sit at the counter. The owner trained as a traditional Sushi chef in Yokohama and he has the skill for making beautiful paper-cutting crafts! I recommend having lunch or dinner as an Unzen memory. Close on Thursdays.
Miyako — Google review
We planed to have a lunch at the restaurant, but my wife wasn't hungry at the time. So we just wanted to order only one meal. The owner immediately kicked us out because of that. There were no other customers at the time, and his attitude was extremely rude and disgusting.
Xin H — Google review
文の字 restaurant in Unzen is a true local gem run by a friendly elderly couple. I highly recommend trying their Unzen Donburi, a local specialty featuring locally sourced poker meat. The meat is thinly sliced and fried tempura-style, adding flavor and crunch to the already delicious meat. It's not too oily, and it pairs perfectly with their special soup.

During my recent day trip, I had the pleasure of dining at Joyfull, a restaurant that truly embodies the essence of casual and enjoyable dining. The experience was seamless from start to finish; the food was not only delicious but also served promptly, making it an ideal stop for lunch. One delightful surprise was being served by a robot, adding a fun twist to our meal! Among the highlights was their cheesecake, which was simply divine.

Food is consistent with other Joyfulls, and service is decent. Smoking and non-smoking areas are separated, but the partition is not 100% effective if cancelling out the scent, so you'll likely leave with the scent of smoke on your clothes if you sit closer to the smoking area.

Pizza restaurant
Pine Tail Farm is a restaurant that may have its drawbacks, such as limited weekend lunch hours, a remote location, and high prices. However, despite these issues, it is well worth the effort to visit. The staff is extremely friendly and the pizza they serve is among the best in Japan. It's definitely worth going out of your way to dine there. Additionally, they offer yogurt and cheese for purchase which I will try next time I'm there.

(Translated by Google) As expected from dairy farmers, the pizza is delicious! Ordered tomato sauce and special. The tomato sauce has a good harmony of sweet and sour sauce and cheese✨ I heard that Special is a cheese with a strong taste, but it doesn't have as much of a smell as Gorgonzola or white cheese, so I guess it's for adults who enjoy the salty and bitter taste. ✨Personally, I love it, but it might be good to share with several people as an accent side to the main pizza♫ Also, the inside of the store is so stylish that it's hard to believe that this building is located on a ranch in the mountains. Also, there are ponies and goats around, which is soothing. Also, the road is very narrow and it is difficult to pass each other even with light vehicles, so be prepared to yield and take a long back!

It may be an exaggeration to say it was a mountain path, but there were no houses along the way, and if you follow the signs scattered here and there, the restaurant will suddenly appear! There is a stone oven to the left of the building entrance and a terrace to the right, so the atmosphere is good no matter where you eat. There are horses grazing outside, which is soothing. There is a handmade slide for children, so it looks like a good way to kill time while waiting. When we went inside, the wife of the couple was serving customers, and the husband was in charge of baking the pizza. We ordered: 1 (Today's recommendation) Garlic pizza 2 (Plenty of vegetables) Premium pizza 3 Dessert pizza 1 It's a standard pizza, but garlic is a secret ingredient?! It enhances the flavor. Delicious! 2 What's surprising is that the freshly baked pizza is topped with homemade raw vegetables, and they put a lot of homemade "growing cheese" on it at the table. This cheese is also delicious! It's truly premium! ! 3. Fruit and ice cream on pizza (surprising), it was innovative, but pizza and dessert go well together ♪ Recommended as a final dish. (Translated by Google) I had heard that their homemade cheese was very delicious, so I visited for the first time to buy some cheese. I veered off the prefectural road and climbed up a forest road that seemed unlikely to allow me to separate from oncoming traffic to reach the store. The large store not only sold cheese and other items, but also had a cafe serving oven-baked pizza and other items. In addition to the delicious-looking ``3-week-grown cheese'' and ``olive butter,'' they also sold frozen pizza, so I bought a plain pizza topped with plenty of homemade cheese. I had it with wine for dinner after I got home, and the cheese and pizza had a faint milky aroma, and the flavor was strong and delicious. Olive butter contains olive oil, so it's lighter than regular butter, but the olive flavor adds to it, and it's even more delicious when you spread it generously on a baguette. The store staff said that due to circumstances, they had fewer types of cheese and pizza, but they still had many different kinds of cheese and pizza, so I'm sure I'll be returning to try the others, and next time I'll be visiting for the pizza baked in the store's stone oven.

It is not a large building, but everything is well-constructed, and it is hard to believe that it is a private art museum. I was particularly captivated by the exhibits, especially the paintings currently on display, which are delicate and depict the deep and distant landscapes of old ukiyo-e, but also have a mysterious charm as abstract paintings. There is also a cafe on the other side of the exhibition room. It is a place with a wonderful atmosphere, and special exhibitions are often held there. Please stop by on your way to Unzen or Obama. I also run a small private aquarium in Nomozaki, and I am struggling with the difficulties, but I was very impressed when you told me about the hardships you face here and all the efforts you make to support the management. I think that the efforts and hardships of such a private aquarium are like heaven and earth compared to facilities that are run by public or designated management companies and have no independent profitability at all, which are run by tax money. I can only imagine how difficult it must be, but I sincerely hope that you will somehow continue. Thank you for your kind permission to photograph and publish the photos. Tachibana Park, nestled in Chijikicho, Unzen City, is a breathtaking destination for cherry blossom enthusiasts. Located along National Route 57 with stunning views of Tachibana Bay, this park features a picturesque approach lined with cherry trees leading to the Tachibana Shrine. Visitors can enjoy crossing a bridge over a deep valley adorned with blooming branch cherry blossoms below. The park is easily accessible via Shimatetsu bus and offers ample parking for those driving in.

A renowned and must-visit spot for cherry blossom seeing in Nagasaki prefecture. Accessible by Shimatetsu bus and with a car park with 50+ spaces (500 yen per entry during cherry blossom period). Some of cherry blossoms are already blooming now. There are also a dozen of food and game stands as if those in a fair, which welcoming locals and foreign visitors. We can't imagine how magnificent there would be when all of them are blooming.

(Translated by Google) Visited on 22/3/31. This cherry blossom viewing spot is located in Chijikicho, Unzen City, along National Route 57 overlooking Tachibana Bay. You will find a parking lot after passing through the large torii gate of Tachibana Shrine. From there, the approach to the shrine is lined with cherry blossom trees. You will cross a bridge that spans a deep valley, and branch cherry blossoms are blooming below the valley as well. It's a spectacular view. Next to the approach is a plaza with a gentle slope, filled with cherry blossoms. Tachibana Shrine is dedicated to Colonel Tachibana, who died in the Russo-Japanese War and was considered the god of war. The shrine precincts are spacious, but the cherry blossoms are not so gorgeous, and the atmosphere is calm. It was a park worth stopping by during cherry blossom season. Castle
Nestled within the scenic Tachibana Park, the Kamagata Castle Ruins offer a delightful blend of history and natural beauty. The well-maintained grounds are perfect for leisurely strolls or engaging in local games like gateball and softball. Visitors can easily access parking and restrooms nearby, making it convenient for families. Although the back net is currently under renovation, the observation deck provides breathtaking panoramic views of Tachibana Bay and Chijiki Town—especially stunning during sunset.

The observation deck is right after you go up the stone steps from the parking lot. Although it is a mock castle tower, the view is quite good and you can see the Chijikoku townscape and Tachibana Bay. I think the smoothest way to enter is to turn towards Unzen from the approach intersection and follow the road towards the Tachibana Shrine vehicle prayer area. Please be careful as you will pass through narrow roads on the way. At the foot of the castle ruins are Tenmangu Shrine, which was built according to the will of Miguel's father, Yamato no kami, and Tachibana Shrine, which is dedicated to the god of war, Lieutenant Colonel Tachibana. Perhaps because there aren't many people here, on sunny days I often see people parking their cars in the shade of the trees and taking a nap. (Translated by Google) If you go up a narrow road from behind Tachibana Shrine toward the ruins of Kamabuta Castle, you will come to a dead end in a fairly large parking lot with a restroom. I parked my car here. If you go up the stairs from this parking lot, you will reach a large baseball field. This may be the remains of the second citadel of Kamafuta Castle. From here is the ruins of Kamafuta Castle [also known as Chijiishi Castle] Ichi no Kuruwa? You can get a good view of the observation deck. The castle ruins seem to be a bit run down as not many people visit, but there is no problem in touring them. The ratio between the first and second kuruwa is quite high, but the only traces that seem to be castle ruins are the stone wall and stone steps of the platform where the observation deck is built. By the way, I felt something strange about the stone monument called ``Kamagata Castle Observation Deck''. I think it would be fine to just call it ``Kamagata Castle.'' Kamafuta Castle was the residence of the Chijiki clan of the Arima clan, and Haruzumi Arima's third son Naokazu was adopted and became the lord of the castle. Norikazu Chijishi (Miguel) is Naoto's son. Norikan Chijishi inherited the Omura clan as the second son of Harumi Arima after his father Naoto was killed in a battle with Takanobu Ryuzoji in 1570, and Kamafuta Castle fell in 1577. He took shelter with his uncle Sumitada Omura. He was baptized here and began to call himself Miguel Chijishi. Beside the observatory are an old ``Kamafuta Castle Origin Record'' and ``Tensho Envoy to Europe Children's Chijiwa Seizaemon Monument.'' The name of this monument, ``Chijiishi Seizaemon,'' is Miguel's name after his abdication. I wondered why, after the Tensho Envoy to Europe, the monument was written as ``Chijiwa Seizaemon'' instead of ``Chijiwa Miguel.'' By the way, if you go down the stone steps from the parking lot, you will find the ``Chijiki Miguel Seizaemon Memorial Monument.'' We also recommend that you take a look. 《Visited on July 19, 2023》 (Original)

Yakiniku restaurant
Meat dish restaurant
If you're on the hunt for a unique dining experience, look no further than "焼肉牛花." This charming yakiniku restaurant offers a delightful atmosphere with semi-private rooms that ensure a cozy meal. During my visit in April 2023, I was impressed by the attentive service from the staff who made me feel right at home. Although I usually lean towards pork, I couldn't resist trying their Overwhelming Meat Burger.
(Translated by Google) Visited in April 2023. The lunch time was from 11:30, but by 11:40 there were several cars in the parking lot. I had another appointment so I decided to take out. There is a separate building where you place your order, give them your car number, and when it's ready, they bring it to your car. I was unsure whether to go for the Unzen burger or the overwhelming meat burger, but since I had the chance, I decided on the overwhelming meat burger. It's a regular burger with thickly sliced short ribs, so it feels more like eating meat than a hamburger. It was very delicious. I think it's definitely better to eat it right away at the restaurant rather than takeout, as it will look disappointing. Honestly, it's a bit expensive for a hamburger at 1,200 yen, but I thought it was worth it. I also wanted to try the Unzen Burger and Special Burger. The other lunch menus were also relatively reasonable, and I felt like I would like to eat inside the restaurant next time. I thought the quality of the meat was worth the price, but there was a problem with the way the food was served... It's served on a griddle, but first of all, it doesn't make any sizzle.
