Nestled in a serene forest, Kashima Jingu Shrine stands as a testament to Japan's rich spiritual heritage. This storied Shinto shrine features an eye-catching red-lacquer entrance gate and four prayer halls, creating a tranquil atmosphere that invites reflection. As the headquarter of the esteemed Kashima Shrine network, which encompasses around 900 shrines nationwide, it holds significant cultural importance alongside Ikisu Shrine and Katori Shrine.
Really great and amazing shrine, even has a deer park. You can even feed the deer’s for 100 yen. At the bottom of the long walkway is a clear water pound and a cafe that has good food and drinks. You can even take the spring water home for a bottle fee.
Nathan O — Google review
It's okay but I wouldn't go out if the way to visit. I found it unusual for the shrine to have a big Japanese flag at the main toori gate and a rock with the flag on it, too. It felt very nationalistic and odd for me. Nearby the flag stone the deer pen is located. You can buy food to feed them. Even in April the scent of deer and deer droppings was a bit unpleasant. The body of water and toori at the end of the shrine was interesting. The whole place is a power spot and you'll leave feeling quite refreshed.

Kashima Shrine, one of the three major shrines of the Tōgoku region, had a truly solemn and sacred atmosphere. Unfortunately, it was raining when we visited, and the paths were quite muddy, so I recommend going on a sunny day. I hope I’ll be blessed with good fortune!

Kashima Jingu Shrine (鹿島神宮) is one of the oldest and most important Shinto shrines in Japan, located in Kashima City, in Ibaraki Prefecture. With a history spanning over 2,600 years, the shrine is dedicated to Takemikazuchi no Ōkami, the Shinto god of thunder, martial arts, and victory. Kashima Jingu has long been associated with Japan’s samurai culture and is renowned for its deep cultural, historical, and spiritual significance. Historical Background Founded in 660 BC, Kashima Jingu is believed to have been established to honor Takemikazuchi no Ōkami, a deity with deep connections to the foundation of Japan. According to legend, Takemikazuchi descended to Japan to help pacify the land, making Kashima Jingu a shrine of great importance in the mythology of Japan’s creation. Throughout its history, the shrine has been closely linked to Japan’s martial tradition. It served as a spiritual center for the samurai, who would come to pray for strength and success in battle. Even today, many visitors, especially practitioners of martial arts, visit Kashima Jingu to seek blessings of courage and protection. Architecture and Layout • Main Hall (Honden): The shrine’s main hall, or Honden, is a beautiful example of traditional Shinto architecture, blending elegance and simplicity. Reconstructed in the Edo period, the Honden is a designated Important Cultural Property of Japan. The shrine’s buildings, including the towering Torii gate, showcase the architectural grandeur of ancient Japan. • Romon Gate: One of the shrine’s most striking features is its Romon Gate, a two-story gate with a vibrant red exterior. Built in 1634 under the order of the Tokugawa Shogunate, the gate is another example of the shrine’s historical significance and is also designated an Important Cultural Property. Sacred Deer and the “Futsunomitama-no-Tsurugi” Sword Kashima Jingu is home to sacred deer, which are believed to be messengers of the gods. These deer freely roam the shrine grounds, similar to the sacred deer at Nara Park. Visitors often interact with and feed these gentle animals as part of their shrine experience. The shrine also holds a replica of the legendary sword Futsunomitama-no-Tsurugi, which, according to mythology, was wielded by Takemikazuchi to pacify the land. The original sword is a revered object in Japanese history, further emphasizing the martial connection of the shrine. Spiritual Significance As one of the most powerful deities in Shinto, Takemikazuchi no Ōkami represents strength, martial prowess, and protection. Kashima Jingu is visited by people seeking blessings for victory, safety in competitions, and success in their endeavors. Practitioners of martial arts often come to the shrine to pray for skill and strength, making it a popular pilgrimage site for athletes and martial artists. Nature and Surroundings The shrine is nestled in a large forest area, which has been preserved for centuries. Known as the Kashima Jingu Sacred Forest, this ancient woodland is considered a spiritual place, offering a peaceful retreat for meditation and reflection. Visitors can stroll along scenic paths lined with towering cedar trees, creating a calming atmosphere that contrasts with the hustle of modern life. The shrine grounds also feature a beautiful pond called Mitarashi Pond, where visitors can purify themselves before entering the sacred areas. According to local lore, the pond’s water is believed to remain at the same level year-round, regardless of the weather or season.

This might be the best place during this trip in IBARAKI! Very tall and astonishing trees composed the forest. Walking in the forest was really happy.

I visited by bicycle. I remember it being quite difficult because I entered from the opposite side of the main gate and couldn't find a place to park my bike. The path to the inner shrine is surrounded by a dense forest, giving it a mysterious atmosphere. When I arrived at the inner shrine, it had a solemn yet very calm and peaceful feel. The strong atmosphere truly makes it deserving of its reputation as the most powerful spiritual spot in Kanto.

It's one of the Three Great Shrines of Eastern Japan, along with Kashima Jingu and Katori Jingu. You can feel its over 1,000 years of history the moment you step into the shrine. However, compared to the other two, it has a slightly smaller and more compact feel.

Ikisu Shrine is a shrine that dates back to ancient times, reaching as far as the starting point of Japan's history. Along with Katori Shrine and Kashima Shrine, which are located nearby, it is collectively known as the "Tougoku-3 Shrines" or the "Three Great Shrines of the Eastern Region." It is said that if you visit all three shrines, you will receive blessings and benefits.

Katori Jingu Shrine, an elaborate Shinto shrine nestled in a serene forest setting, boasts a history dating back to 643 B.C. It is revered as one of Japan's oldest Shinto shrines and serves as the head of 400 Katori Shrines nationwide. Dedicated to Futsunushi-no-Mikoto, the god of swords and protector of Japan, this shrine holds significant cultural and historical importance.
Not crowded in weekdays. Surrounded by nature and the countryside. Heard that katori Jingu shrine is very popular and powerful. And one of the oldest shrine. Must visit in spring or autumn. Weekdays you can go there without traffic jam and parking available for several cars.

Beautiful shrine, you have to walk a couple of stairs but it's worth it, nothing to demanding either. When you have many dango stores, please check out for a quick refreshment before continuing your road

Five stars for Katori Jingu. From the tree-lined approach to the beautifully kept halls, everything radiates calm and care. It’s spacious enough to wander, reflect, and take photos without rushing. The shrine staff were welcoming; picking up a goshuin and drawing an omikuji made the visit feel special. Pro tips: visit on a weekday (it was nearly empty when we went), take a minute at the purification basin before praying, and bring small change for an offering. A peaceful, culturally rich stop I’d return to again. ⛩️

A beautiful, peaceful shrine. Only found this out from my airbnb, but Jingu is a level above Jinja in shrines, with specific links to the emperor. This jingu is large, but feels small and peaceful. The massive 1000-year old trees give it a very ancient air

I am writing to express my heartfelt gratitude and admiration for the incredible experience my colleagues and I had during our recent visit to Katori Jingu Shrine as part of our International Cultural Exchange program. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with warmth and hospitality that made us feel immediately welcome. The beauty and tranquility of Katori Jingu Shrine provided the perfect setting for our cultural exchange, allowing us to fully appreciate the rich heritage and spiritual significance of this sacred place. The carefully planned activities and events were both enlightening and enjoyable. We were particularly moved by the Shinto rituals and ceremonies we had the privilege to witness. The reverence and precision with which these rituals were performed offered us a profound glimpse into the spiritual traditions of Japan. Participating in these ceremonies was an honor that we will cherish forever. The guided tour of the shrine grounds was exceptionally informative. Our knowledgeable guide shared fascinating insights into the history, architecture, and cultural importance of Katori Jingu Shrine. Learning about the shrine’s role in the community and its historical significance deepened our understanding and appreciation of Japanese culture and history. We were also deeply impressed by the opportunity to participate in traditional cultural activities. Engaging in these hands-on experiences, such as calligraphy and ikebana, allowed us to connect with the artistic and spiritual aspects of Japanese culture in a meaningful way. These activities were both educational and inspiring, fostering a greater appreciation for the skill and dedication involved. The interaction with the local community members was another highlight of our visit. The warm and open exchanges we had with them were invaluable in building mutual understanding and fostering lasting friendships. It was heartwarming to see how Katori Jingu Shrine serves as a bridge between different cultures, promoting harmony and respect. In conclusion, our visit to Katori Jingu Shrine was an extraordinary and enriching experience that left a lasting impression on all of us. We are deeply grateful for the effort and care that went into organizing such a memorable event. Your commitment to promoting cultural exchange and understanding is truly commendable, and we look forward to continuing this wonderful relationship in the future. Thank you once again for your exceptional hospitality and for providing us with such a profound cultural experience.

It was a small roadside station, but it had a display of locally grown produce and Chiba souvenirs. It was hot, with the lingering heat of summer, so I bought a vanilla soft serve ice cream, which was filling and delicious. I took a bite, thinking it was vanilla, but it tasted more like sweet potato, which I enjoyed. It was about a 20-minute ride from here to Sakuranoyama Park at Narita Airport. Not only the pork but also the vegetables are locally produced, and the lunch is steamed in a bamboo steamer. You can have as much rice as you want. With the recent price hike, it's a little pricey, but it's so delicious that it makes you think it's nice to have a luxurious lunch every once in a while. The atmosphere of the restaurant was good and it was like a small tourist facility, so I was excited even before entering the restaurant lol When the food I ordered was brought out, the staff explained it to me carefully, and I was able to kill some time in the souvenir corner of the restaurant while waiting for the food to be steamed 😌 Once it was steamed, the staff prepared it so that it was easy to eat, and I ate it right away. I thought the hamburger was a little oily, but it was fragrant and very delicious when I ate it with wasabi and salt. It was really delicious when I ate it with young corn, zucchini, sweet potato, spinach, komatsuna, cabbage, onion, mushroom, tomato, salt, barley miso, grated wasabi, and the restaurant's original ponzu sauce, so I bought some ponzu sauce on my way home (lol) Next time, I would like to come to the restaurant opposite to eat salt-grilled or shabu-shabu loin! It seems that a sightseeing boat that tours the 12 bridges is also open, and the business days are Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, making it so elegant and enviable. It seems to double as a tourist restaurant and a local community salon, and was crowded with groups and lunch-drinking men on Sunday lunchtimes. I ordered the fillet cutlet and fried shrimp set (with mini soba noodles) for ¥1,650, which included 2 large fried shrimp, shiso-wrapped fries, a medium-sized fillet cutlet, salad, basil pasta, grated soba, miso soup, pickled vegetables, and rice. And even the dessert was in good shape! It looked like I was going to be full, but I somehow managed to satisfy my stomach and finish the entire meal. As for the most important taste, except for the fried shiso rolls, the batter was thick and had a crunchy texture, as if it were made for commercial use. It's a real shame because it looks gorgeous... It seems that the nabeyaki udon that the seniors ordered was the correct choice. (Translated by Google) The potato gnocchi here is excellent, so I've been back several times. The food is generally tasty, but the potato gnocchi is so exceptional that it sometimes overshadows the other dishes, but that may be because the gnocchi is so good. There are several restaurants where you can enjoy your meal while looking out at the garden, and from experience, most such restaurants focus on ambiance and appearance, but this restaurant is solid in both presentation and taste. I have a strong sense of local pride (Chiba), and often invite friends over to experience the best of Chiba, and this restaurant is definitely one I would recommend. I've invited friends from far away to visit, and everyone has been impressed, especially the gnocchi. My impression is that the gnocchi, of course, and the desserts are always very good, too. They always have two types prepared, and they're very flexible and allow each person to order something different, so we always order different things, but I'm grateful because I'm sure it would be difficult to make two things at the same time. The matcha macaroon-like thing they served this time in particular had a strong matcha flavor and was very appealing. I love matcha, so I've eaten a lot of matcha sweets, but this was the best one I've ever had. If I had to say something, bread is also a big factor for me, so even though I'm sure baking it is very difficult, I wish it were even more delicious. They require reservations made the day before, so it's a shame I can't go if a friend suddenly decides to visit Chiba. However, I understand that this would be difficult as they have to secure staff, prepare ingredients, and do the cooking, but I would be very grateful if they could change the reservation system to allow reservations until XX o'clock on the day. Anyway, this restaurant is on my list of highly recommended Chiba gourmet spots. In this day and age, it can't be helped that businesses that heavily use social media marketing tend to attract more customers, get more attention, and are more likely to be highly rated, but in that sense, this restaurant is a hidden gem that only those in the know will know about. I'll definitely visit again.

Proximity is everything
For day 2, we bundled attractions like Museum of Aeronautical Sciences and Michinoeki Hakko-no-Sato Kozaki Fish Market and other places within a close range, so that the time it takes to travel between all of them is less than one hour. Combined with the average time people spend there, your day should take about 8 hours.

Museums
The Museum of Aeronautical Sciences, located near Narita Airport in Japan, is a must-visit for aviation enthusiasts and families alike. This unique museum offers a wide variety of modern aircraft, including full-scale replicas of historic planes and helicopters. Visitors can also enjoy hands-on experiences such as piloting their own plane in life-sized flight simulators. The museum's observation area provides impressive views of the runway action at Narita Airport.
It's a small museum, but very high quality. Stuff for adults and kids. One of the highlights is the flight simulator experience they offer. Very detailed 737 sim, and the man running it is a very good teacher. Only 1000 yen for a session, two sessions available per hour. Very good way to pass an hour or two if you have some extra time before a flight. Pro tip: if your coming from NRT on a weekday, the bus to here leaves from bus stand #2 for Terminal 2/3. On weekends, I believe the Soramaru bus runs, not sure about that schedule but airport info desk is helpful.
Winston M — Google review
Really close to the airport, so catching a bus here was very easy. There’s a viewing platform outside where you get a great view of planes coming in. Some interesting displays and 747 stuff to geek out over, and a smallish assortment of aircraft on display outside. With a visit if you’re a plane buff, love tech and engineering or just like this sort of museum. Certainly a quicker visit than the technic museums in Heidelberg!
Travis Y — Google review
We stumbled upon the Museum of Aeronautical Sciences purely by chance—my son saw a flyer while we were at the observation deck in Narita Airport. We checked the map and saw it was really close by, so we decided to go for it on a whim. I purchased the tickets on Klook, which turned out to be a great decision because they were cheaper than buying them at the ticket booth onsite. Definitely recommend checking prices online beforehand. When we arrived, we were surprised by how big and well-organized the museum was. It’s divided into different sections and floors, with full-scale aircraft on display—some you can even walk into. There are interesting exhibits showing the history of aviation, aircraft engines, a Boeing 747 cockpit, and even a section where you can see and hear what it’s like inside a plane. My son was fascinated! One of the highlights is the rooftop observation deck. From there, you can watch planes taking off and landing at Narita Airport, which was really exciting—especially for a kid who loves airplanes. We saw that there are paid experiences like the flight simulator, which looked awesome, but unfortunately we couldn’t get a slot for it on the day we visited. Next time, we’ll definitely book in advance for that. The staff were friendly and helpful, and there were signs in both Japanese and English, which made it easy for us to understand everything. Overall, it was a fun and educational experience, and I’m so glad we decided to visit even though it wasn’t originally part of our plan. If you’re at Narita Airport with some time to spare—or if you’re an aviation fan—it’s definitely worth checking out. Just make sure to book tickets online for a discount and plan ahead for the paid experiences like the simulator. A must-visit!

If you want to experience for airlaine control simulations for additional costs, needs extra time and check availability ahead. Make sure public transportation timetable or use taxi from Narita airport (costs around 2500yen) It's fun, just walking around this museum. I enjoyed 5th floor observation area. Watching airplanes departures from HND
Manami K — Google review
No english explanations. But the exhibits were interesting. There is an outdoor area with planes. The best part would probably be simulators which needs to be booked in advance. Next best thing was the observation deck where you had a very good view of planes coming in to land. Easy bus ride from Narita station and airport but do check the frequency and day of the week.
Li X — Google review
Used some spare time before the flight from Narita to visit here. But would recommend. Easily an hour and half needed. Reach early to book the 737 cockpit flight simulator. The observation deck on 5th floor and open air one if weather permits are also highlights. Klook discount for tickets.
Jose K — Google review
This museum absolutely delivered! They have a giant model of a 747 that you can fly by going into a cockpit, and there is a DC-8 Flight Experience. When you walk in, you are greeted by many high-quality model planes. Oh, I forgot, the giant model of Narita on the second floor, AND, a plane spotting sport that one would dream about. I would recommend any ages for this place and you should go soon. Absolutely. AMAZING 🤩
Rachael — Google review
Definitely a worthwhile stop if you're an aviation enthusiast! This combined with Sakuranoyama Park are definitely must-dos if you want to spend a day of Narita planespotting beyond the observation decks at the terminals. The indoor and outdoor exhibits themselves feature retired equipment from airlines that have served Narita (it was a treat seeing some of the old Northwest barcalounger World Business Class seats on that 747 cross section!) while the observation deck has some fantastic views of Runway 34L/16R that serves as the primary runway. If you time it right in the afternoon, the constant stream of arriving then departing flights feeding the Asia-North America connecting banks would provide a constant stream of aircraft to view. Weekends may be busier but may also include additional interactive activities. We were lucky to have visited while Japan Airlines hosted such an event that included simulations like sorting packages into LD3 containers, aircraft marshaling, and tow truck rides. If I recall as well, the gift shop in the lobby has almost all the same products as the museum gift shop in Terminal 1's 5th floor shopping mezzanine before security so there's second chance opportunities if you were thinking about an aviation-themed gift!

(Translated by Google) This is a fresh market at a roadside station. Since I visited at the end of the year, it was quite lively and crowded. The outside sales floor has a wide variety of fresh vegetables at reasonable prices. What surprised me most was the carrot! This price includes so much. Carrots are useful, so I wanted to buy them, but I gave up because there were so many of them. I wonder if I should have shared it with the auntie who was nearby. Some people were buying large quantities of radish and Chinese cabbage to make pickles. While I was looking at the vegetables, the store staff kept displaying them one after another. The store was small, but they carried not only vegetables but a variety of other local products. There were a lot of customers, and the line to check out stretched about half way across the sales floor. This is also a roadside station that I would like to come back to! ! It's not that wide, but it's not that noticeable. There is a Family Mart in the building, so you can feel safe even at night. The toilet also has an automatic door at the entrance, which reduces the cold in winter. Also worth mentioning is the facilities related to fermented foods. Fermented food souvenir shop, bakery, restaurant. All of them were exciting, but the one that was especially wonderful was the meal at Restaurant Orize. Order 3 items: Tonkatsu, Tuna Cutlet, and Tonteki using the ticket machine. All of them were exquisite dishes that made good use of fermented foods such as koji, miso, and soy sauce. In addition to the main course, miso soup, natto, tofu, and tuna cutlet also come with kimchi, which are all delicious. The staff is as high-quality as a specialty store, or even better if you're not good at it. I missed it. The store staff are also kind. Thank you. I would definitely like to visit again. Embark on the enchanting Little Edo Sawara boat tour, a delightful journey along the picturesque Ono River. This scenic cruise allows you to soak in the beauty of willow-lined banks and admire stunning Edo-period architecture, including charming wooden bridges and traditional townhouses. The 30-minute round trip offers a unique perspective of this historic town, often referred to as 'Little Edo of Hokuso,' which has thrived as a waterway community for centuries.
Little Edo is so good. You can just walk straight from Sawara station; it will take around 10 minutes, or you can wait at bus stop #1. The experience is superb and enjoyable.

Great tourist attraction. Boat ride is around 30 minutes long. Staff are knowledgeable about the local area. It’s possible to get a discount ticket from one of the local parking area nearly. Arrive early as this is a popular attraction.

We took the Little Edo Sawara boat tour and it was such a great experience. We caught the last boat of the day around 4 PM, and even though we didn’t speak the language, the staff were very accommodating and tried their best to explain the historic sights and passages we were floating through. The atmosphere was peaceful, the views along the old canals were beautiful, and it felt like stepping back in time. What stood out was how family-friendly it was—our toddler loved it, and it was no problem with the stroller since you can leave it by the office and they’ll have it ready for you when you get back. The ride was smooth, safe, and very affordable, making it an easy must-do if you’re in Sawara. Pro tips: • Go for the late afternoon ride (around 4 PM) for calmer vibes and softer light for photos. • Affordable tickets—bring a little cash since some kiosks don’t take card. • Toddler/stroller-friendly → just leave your stroller at the office before boarding. • Don’t worry if you don’t speak Japanese, the boat guides are kind and will still make the experience fun and meaningful.

Beautiful and interesting, but I recommend doing it very early in the morning or after the buildings give you some shadow, we went close to mid-day in summer and the heat was scorching. But it is a very great experience.

This place is also called "Little Edo of Hokuso". It has prospered as a water town since ancient times, and even today there are many townscapes that retain their vestiges, such as wooden and storehouse-style townhouses, earthen storehouses, and Western-style architecture.

It was raining on the day I visited, but it added new experience to float in the boat through the river with sprinkling water, and it soothing sounds (white noise). You can visit many stores with traditional facets around.

Very nice boat ride and tour along the river. Tour consisted of about 15 minutes up the river and back to the starting point. Sawara is a very historical town and the boat tour was a good way to see the older buildings and hear of the history. The tour guide was very sweet older lady who talked about how much she loved her job. It was worth the 1,300 Yen.

History Museums
The Inoh Tadataka Memorial Museum is a must-visit for history enthusiasts and those interested in cartography. The museum showcases the measuring instruments of Inoh Tadataka, a renowned geographer who meticulously mapped Japan, earning him national treasure status. Visitors can also explore his former residence nearby. Additionally, the area is known for the Sawara Grand Festival, featuring impressive large dolls on floats and dating back 300 years.
3/8/2025 Buy your ticket inside the museum. No photos and videos allowed for most of the places in the museum. They have a national treasure, too. Learn about Inoh Tadataka / 伊能忠敬 beforehand so that you’ll get better understanding when visiting the museum. He’s the very first Japanese person who created the Japanese map measuring all on foot across the country even small islands as well. His map is just so well made that it looks exactly like what we see on google maps nowadays taken from the space.

Took off one-star cos many of the displays didn't have English. But this is a very compact, polished and effective museum to convey the life of the most important man in Sawara, who drew the first full map of Japan with astonishing accuracy. One of my favourite displays was the one where they overlay the sattelite shot over his map drawn with primitive custom-made instruments. Worth the 500yen and more

Sawara Chiyofuku offers a delightful dining experience with a pleasant atmosphere. The restaurant serves delicious rice cooked in an earthenware pot, and their Mugi Toro Gozen is highly recommended. In addition to meat and eel options, they also offer excellent kaiseki meals. It's a great place to enjoy Kobe beef in a very nice environment.
We walked in at lunch during a weekday without a reservation, were sea ted immediately, service was great and we communicated rather easily with the host even though noone in our group speaks Japanese. We ordered several sets that we shared, my favorite was the grilled fish but all the food was absolutely great, I definitely recommend this place.

(Translated by Google) I had the Koi Pork Shabu-Shabu Set Meal here. They said it would take some time because the rice is cooked before serving, but it arrived in less than a minute. I was happy to be able to enjoy it piping hot. If I had been staying overnight, I would have ordered it with a draft beer, but this time I settled for a non-alcoholic beer. Still, it paired perfectly with the food. The shabu-shabu was made with "Koi Suru Pork," a brand of pork from Chiba Prefecture, and was very tender and juicy. I was happy to be able to enjoy both the sesame sauce and ponzu sauce. The rice was cooked in a pot and was shiny and plump. I also ordered some grated yam from Tako on top. The fluffy, melt-in-your-mouth texture and the gentle flavor of the yam filled my mouth, making it so delicious that it washed away all the fatigue of walking. The sashimi was lean tuna, and it was fresh and melt-in-your-mouth. There were also a variety of small side dishes, and it was clear that each was carefully prepared. It was a very satisfying meal. There was only one other group there when we walked through the noren curtain, and we were shown to our seats immediately. The black soba noodles we were looking forward to are only served on weekends. That said, the soba we ordered was truly delicious. There was a sign inside the restaurant that said "elegant taste," and that was exactly what it was. There is a sign that says photography is prohibited inside the restaurant, and that only the soba noodles are allowed to be photographed. The restaurant is said to have been in business for 200 years, dating back to the Tenmei era. There are also photos from 1911 hanging inside the restaurant. It is the ultimate pleasure to slowly slurp down the soba noodles while feeling the history. Five stars for the Sawara Historic Town Visitor Center. Super helpful staff, tidy space, and plenty of maps/brochures in English and Japanese. They helped us plan a mellow, stroller-friendly loop along the canal and through the old streets, flagged the best photo angles on the bridges, and checked the boat cruise schedule for us. It made the whole visit feel easy and family-friendly. On a weekday it was nearly crowd-free, which was perfect for slow exploring and snacks. Pro tips: • Start here for maps + route advice (ask about boat times). • The town is flat—good for strollers and grandparents. • Bring cash; many small vendors prefer it. • Pair with a stop at the Inō Tadataka Museum and a canal ride for classic Sawara vibes.

The Suigo Sawara Float Museum offers a captivating glimpse into the vibrant culture of the region, showcasing two magnificent floats that embody the spirit of local festivals. Nearby, Katori Jingu Shrine stands as a historical gem over 2,700 years old, renowned for its stunning cherry blossoms in spring and colorful foliage in autumn.

Sawara Dashi Kaikan is the museum of Sawara city carnival which is held twice a year. The Sawara carnival was attended by all Sawara residents using the traditions and customs of each region. This celebration has been going on since the Edo period most than 300 years ago. In this museum, you can see various cultures typical of the Sawara people, such as the Sawara parade and Ayame flowers (Irish flowers).

If you’re visiting Sawara you should definately check this museum out. It has the history of the floats, and also houses some of the floats which are used in the city’s annual festivals. In the float exhibition room they even have photo spot pinpoints so you can take the best photos of the floats. There is a theatre room where you can listen to the history of the area. If you arrive in a group of foreigners and are willing to wait they will put on an English translated video (it’s dubbed with a robotic voice, so the pronounciation may be a little strange of some words, but the translation is correct) The staff were super friendly and knowledgeable! Would definitely visit again.

Yasaka Shrine, located in Sawara, is a captivating destination that beautifully blends history and culture. Renowned for hosting the Sawara Grand Festival, one of Kanto's three major festivals, this shrine has deep roots dating back to the early Edo period when it was relocated to its current site. Nestled near Mt. Sawara Suwayan, Yasaka Shrine serves as a guardian for the surrounding areas of Sawara and Honjuku.

(Translated by Google) On the way back from visiting Katori Shrine, I noticed that Yasaka Shrine was nearby. When I was a child, I used to visit a shrine where the main deity is Suhoson-sama, so I decided to visit Yasaka Shrine. It was built in ancient times on Tennodai near Mt. Sawara Suwayan. It was moved to its current location during the Tenwa era (some say pre-Tensho era) in the early Edo period, and became the general guardian of the Sawara and Honjuku areas. Initially, the front entrance was on the Hamajuku side (currently Chiba Moeyo High School side), but when the shrine building was remodeled in the first year of the Meiji era, it was added to the current Yokaichiba side (Chiba Prefectural Route 55 Sawara Yamada Line, commonly known as Katori Kaido side). It was done. Since then, this shrine has had two main gates, each called Hamashukuguchi and Yokaichibaguchi, and the main gates are said to change every other year. The bell string of the main shrine was a beautiful blue color. There was a Suigo Sawara Dashi Hall on the grounds, but due to time constraints we were unable to tour it. I also wanted to visit the hall after visiting the shrine. Ono River, located in Sawara, is a charming area that attracts many tourists due to its well-preserved historic buildings and traditional landscape. The Ono River boat tour is a popular activity for sightseers, offering a leisurely look at the once-bustling merchant town's heritage townscape. Lining the riverbanks are rows of preserved merchant houses, providing visitors with a glimpse into the area's prosperous past.
Sawara is a beautiful city and full of history specially for Edo era. This river was really important for the logistics at that time. It is near to Narita airport, great option to running away from busy Tokyo.

The Ono River in Sawara (Katori, Chiba) is beautiful and full of charm. Walking along the canal feels peaceful, with historic houses, little bridges, and calm waters that reflect the old-town vibe. It’s a perfect spot for families—stroller-friendly paths, lots of photo opportunities, and a quiet atmosphere away from the rush of Tokyo. We loved just strolling here, watching the boats go by, and taking in the traditional scenery. It really feels like stepping back into “Little Edo.” Pro tips: • Weekdays → calmer and easier to take photos without crowds. • Best seasons → spring cherry blossoms and autumn leaves make the riverside especially gorgeous. • Stroller/kid-friendly → paths are mostly flat and easy to walk. • Cash → if you stop at local shops along the river, bring cash. • Pair it with the Sawara boat tour or the Inō Tadataka Museum for a full-day visit. A peaceful, authentic experience—highly recommend if you’re in Chiba and want to see a different side of Japan.

Like walking into the past. Beautifully maintained, and stunning to look at. You can walk the whole stretch even beyond the preserved area and still see old houses being resided in, or taken over by cafes and restaurants. We saw swans swimming down river. A great hour or two of exploration including the museum and Idoh's house nearby.

it was more like canal than river. the water was shallow in some parts. but the stroll along the river was beautiful. the iris flowers along the way were gorgeous! it took you back in time with all the merchant houses from the Edo period.

The place is simply instagram-able. Since it is super early, there are no tourists apart from me and of course there were no stores opened, but I enjoyed the river view all to myself. Like almost all of Japan, the place is very neat and clean. The old town concept was much retained and reminds me of scenes from Rurouni Kenshin. I just needed to be careful because vehicles also pass by the road along the river. Took a lot of good photos and here are some of them.

Despite the current Covid-19 situation, patrons can enjoy their meals without any inconvenience. With its large size and affordable prices, Chukei Chaya is an ideal choice for tourists exploring the area.
We ended up at Chukei Chaya by mistake after a long hike, and it became the highlight of our day. Unagi restaurant
Yamada Unagi Restaurant, situated in Sawara and just a short drive from Narita airport, is a renowned and ancient establishment favored by locals. While they serve various dishes, their specialty lies in grilled freshwater eel known as unagi. With two entrances available and parking space provided, be prepared for potential queues due to its popularity. Despite language barriers, the staff's generous assistance in selecting delectable options made for a delightful dining experience.
Good food must wait. Typical practise to queue for good restaurants in Japan. No exclusion for this. Fresh cuts of unagi and savoury teriyaki sauce over rice served together with clear eel liver soup were the best combo set you can enjoy for brunch or lunch! We were offered English menu and bigger table to accommodate all six of us. They served the food and drinks fast. No hangry issues after getting a seat.

First time we visited was before covid and today we finally got to go back. Went for dinner on a wednesday and didn’t have to wait to get a table. They seem to only had 4 portions of biggest size eel available today which we ordered but it turned out to be way too big for me 😂 the taste was just as amazing as the first time we had it. After all these years trying out different restaurants in different regions, yamada unagi is still the best in our opinion. Not sure why the rating seems to have dropped since we last visited but the only thing that was a tiny bit of a let down was the service where the staff was always in the kitchen it was hard to get their attention. Eel was perfectly grilled and the sauce was a good amount of sweet and salty. Wish they’d put out a small container of it so we can add more sauce if we’d like. Will definitely be back anytime we come through narita

My last great meal before I left Japan for good. Located in Sawara which is around 30 mins by car to Narita airport. A very old Unagi restaurant and famous amongst the locals. Thus, expect to find queue if you are planning to go here. Unagi is Japanese word for grilled fresh water eel. They offer food other than unagi, but I highly recommend their Unagi. They have two entrance doors, the front door faces the main road and, the second door is for access to second floor. Parking space available.

(Translated by Google) My recommendation is steamed chicken. Probably something authentic made from a whole chicken. It's moist and delicious without being dry. The shredded beef and peppers were quite salty, to the point where you can't eat them without rice. Adding a lot of green pepper will give it a luxurious feel, but it won't have much texture, so I would like to add some bamboo shoots for a good balance. I was expecting the clam soup yakisoba with clam sauce, but I didn't really feel it. It looks like there are just clams on it. When it came to customer service, it was nice to see that all the staff were very attentive to each table. Buddhist temple
Kanpuku-ji Temple, a significant site in the Buzan sect of Shingon Buddhism, is renowned as one of Japan's three great evil-warding daishi temples. With a history spanning over 1,100 years, most of its structures date back more than a century. The temple houses four Important Cultural Properties, including a seated statue of Shakyamuni Tathagata.
Small local temple to see momiji. Though it is small, the momiji is still stunning enough. A quiet ans peaceful place to enjoy the autumn time.

I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. I am writing to express my deepest gratitude and admiration for the extraordinary experience my colleagues and I had during our recent visit to Kanpuku-ji Temple as part of our International Cultural Exchange program. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by your team, who demonstrated unparalleled hospitality and kindness. The serene and beautifully maintained surroundings of Kanpuku-ji Temple provided a tranquil setting that allowed us to fully immerse ourselves in the cultural exchange experience. The meticulously organized activities and events showcased the rich cultural heritage and traditions of the temple. We were particularly impressed by the tea ceremony, which was conducted with great precision and elegance. It was a privilege to witness such an integral aspect of Japanese culture and to participate in it ourselves. The attention to detail and the serene atmosphere made the experience truly unforgettable. The guided tour of the temple grounds was another highlight of our visit. The knowledgeable and friendly guides provided us with fascinating insights into the history and significance of Kanpuku-ji Temple. Their passion for preserving and sharing this cultural treasure was evident and greatly appreciated by all of us. We were particularly moved by the stories of the temple’s founding and its role in the community over the centuries. The opportunity to engage in traditional arts and crafts activities was both educational and enjoyable. Learning about and creating our own pieces of Japanese art allowed us to gain a deeper understanding of the cultural nuances and artistic expressions that are unique to Japan. These hands-on experiences were not only informative but also fostered a greater appreciation for the craftsmanship and dedication involved in these art forms. Moreover, the cultural exchange provided us with the chance to connect with members of the local community. The warm and open interactions we had with them were invaluable in fostering mutual understanding and friendship. It was heartening to see how the temple serves as a bridge between different cultures, bringing people together in a spirit of harmony and respect. In conclusion, our visit to Kanpuku-ji Temple was an extraordinary and enriching experience that left a lasting impression on all of us.

Shindoyama Tumulus Cluster is a site recommended for those interested in the historical and romantic allure of ancient religious sites and ruins. The area offers hiking trails with informative boards, but caution is advised as the ground can get muddy after rain. Visitors can enjoy the serene atmosphere around Masuhara Shrine and its surrounding plaza, just a short walk from JR Katori Station. The well-maintained shrine nestled in the mountains reflects the deep local faith.

If you go further, you will find a spot where you can see the direction of Katori Station, which is very pleasant. As you go further in, you will see the ``Kindoyama Tumulus Group,'' but it is so thick with trees that it looks a little empty without a marking plate. Shinto is owned by Katori Jingu Shrine, and in the past, Katori Jingu granted ``Katoriyama Nehonji Temple'' as temple territory to protect, but the temple was abandoned in the Ansei era (around 1780). There were 12 ancient tombs built on Mt. Shinto during the Kofun period, between the 5th and 6th centuries. Currently, one main tumulus, a keyhole-shaped tumulus, and six round tumuli called side mounds remain, and it was designated as a city-designated ruin in 1978. As I think about it, why is there a bronze statue here...I think this has an important meaning. Suwa Shrine is right next door. This is a Go-sha, meaning that the Go-sha was in charge of each village shrine, so it makes sense that it would be here. The statue is located in a place where it would have been built later, so why is it in such a small, grassy area? Many people may think so, but I think it's quite the opposite. I felt a little sad. On the other hand, maybe local people should appeal a little more? I thought so too. Also, I thought that if someone had informed me that the long stone steps at Suwa Shrine lead to a road behind the shrine, I wouldn't have bothered to go all the way down. (Translated by Google) I went there because I had heard that it was the only place with a yellow mailbox. What was unusual was that not only this, but an actual Subaru 360 was also on display. Why? However, it is a valuable car, and I would like to drive it once it has been restored. The door opens the other way! Although it is a branch of the museum, there were many valuable materials. While you can feel the history, you can't deny that the facilities are aging, and you can also feel the history here. Once upon a time, it would have been crowded with elementary school students on field trips, but when I visited, it was just me and my partner. I wonder if there was someone who came alone first? First of all, why don't you come and look for the yellow mailbox? The renovated garden has greatly improved its quality while respecting its long history, and I was completely overwhelmed by the Japanese space. The dishes are prepared by Chef Eso, who honed his skills at a three-star restaurant in such a wonderful space. Needless to say, it was exquisite, luxurious, and extremely delicious. This time it was a renewal reception, so it was a very luxurious course, but from now on, everyone will be satisfied with the lunch and dinner, so I can't stop being excited to think that we can enjoy this in Sawara from now on! Personally, I feel that he truly embodies the idea of enjoying a meal with all five senses, so I think you can definitely go to Yossoko for not only everyday use, but also for spending time with loved ones, dinners, and banquets. When you step inside, you're immediately soothed by the stately feel of a traditional Japanese house and the refined, high-quality space. The garden visible from the window is meticulously manicured and lit up at night, creating a magical atmosphere. The luxury of being able to appreciate the beauty of the four seasons while savoring a meal is undeniable. Each dish was presented like a work of art, and the flavor exceeded expectations. The sautéed foie gras in particular was exquisite, with a fragrant, crispy exterior and a rich, melt-in-your-mouth flavor. The caviar and salmon dish also popped in your mouth, highlighting the quality of the ingredients and delicate seasoning. The other dishes were also extremely delicious. I've eaten a lot of French cuisine in Tokyo and the Kanto region, but I feel this price is surprisingly good value for the food and atmosphere. The staff were very attentive and I enjoyed my meal until the very end. This is a one-of-a-kind restaurant that I'd definitely like to return to for anniversaries or special occasions. *I recommend taking a short stroll in the garden on your way back♪ The Japanese garden and its illuminations are absolutely beautiful. Wrapped in sweaty air, we exited the highway and headed for Katori in Chiba. 🚗 The sunshine was especially invigorating, especially since we'd been expecting rain. ✨ A light, excited atmosphere filled the air, signaling the start of a holiday. A nostalgic tune blared from the radio as we chatted joyfully. 📻 Our destination: Auberge de Manoir Yoshiniwa, quietly nestled in the waterside town of Sawara. 🏡 @kittei_sawara This 150-year-old traditional Japanese restaurant combines the tranquility of Japanese cuisine with the sophistication of French cuisine. 🇫🇷 The expansive 2,600-square-meter garden is a stage for reflecting the colors of the seasons, and the view from the window is like a tranquil painting that soothes the soul. 🖼️ Sit on the veranda and enjoy the time as you melt into the garden. ✨ Today's meal: <HANA Course (5 dishes)> (+ Sparkling toast (non-alcoholic available) ・Japanese seasonal dishes (3-inch serving) ・A gorgeous display of marinated fresh fish and seasonal vegetables ・Today's special soup (with bread) ・Main Dish 1. [Fish Dish] Fresh fish sauteed with seasonal vegetables 2. [Meat Dish] Today's chef's choice meat dish *Choose one dish from the above ・Seasonal dessert ・After-meal coffee or tea ⚪︎Japanese seasonal dishes Three-inch serving Salmon wrapped in shredded egg offered a soft dialogue between yellow and orange. The Matsukaze-yaki chicken brought out the aroma and flavor of sesame, and the carrot castella cake, despite being a vegetable, was light and pastry-like. From the prologue, Japanese and playful flavors intersected. ⚪︎Western appetizer "Pulporika Jega" The firmness of Ishinomaki octopus and the sweetness of Katori's Andes Red overlapped, and the paprika sauce and vinegar-miso mayonnaise bridged the gap between Japanese and Mediterranean flavors. It felt like my tongue was on a journey. ⚪︎Chilled corn soup Cool and sweet. The consommé jelly at the bottom added depth, and the playful popcorn created a light and airy summer afternoon. Main Course (Choose one fish or meat dish) ⚪︎Sautéed Red Sea Bream The fragrant skin and sweet flesh are complemented by a saffron sauce that brings out the umami of clams. The spiciness of green pepper adds a finishing touch, evoking the scenery of Southern Europe while embracing authentic Japanese ingredients. ⚪︎Herb Pork with Red Wine Sauce The tenderness of the meat and its mellow aroma come together, and the accompanying Katori vegetables are more than just a side dish. The subtle harmony of the meat, vegetables, and red wine speaks to the richness of the season. Dessert ⚪︎Coconut Blancmange 🥥 The lustrous tartness of mango adds color to the white sweetness, and the vanilla ice cream in the center gently ties the whole dish together. The soft aroma of the tea bubbles was as if a resort afternoon had been captured in a single dish. ✨ The rain that fell midway through the meal deeply moistened the greenery of the garden, and the dewdrops on the tips of the leaves shone with light. ✨ The aftertaste of the dish and the scenery merged, and a final cup of iced coffee quietly cleansed my palate. ☕️ The wonderful food, the view, and the elegant service left a deep sense of satisfaction in my heart. Surrounded by the rich aroma of the rain, time seemed to pass slowly. I spent a truly happy time.

It has been renovated, so I can't compare it to what it was before, but I think it's worth it just to come here. ・HANA- I ordered the above course meal. All of the dishes were very delicious and looked great. In particular, the main dish, Boso pork, is the most amazingly tender meat I've ever had. Is it really meat? It was so soft that I doubted it. Also, the bread was free to refill, so it went very well with the pork sauce and soup sauce. The mixed berry mousse at the end was not only delicious in appearance but also delicious, and I was very satisfied with the food and the restaurant's atmosphere from beginning to end. Why ★3? It's the customer service of the staff in charge. I was served by two older male and female staff members, but both of them had a bad tongue and I couldn't understand what they were saying when they told me the name of the dish. The woman in particular was confused by her behavior, and kept saying the name of the dish incorrectly, repeating XX berry, XX berry, mousse, and in the end I couldn't remember what she said, so I wrote it down in my diary as mixed berry. Also, regarding the soup, it sounded like it was a scallop soup, but it didn't taste like it was made with scallops. However, the taste was very good so I guess it's okay. And the most surprising thing was when they brought me coffee. If you put it here, the place where the male staff placed it was at the very end of the table, and above the menu table! (# ゚Д゚)Where will I put it? The young staff spoke well and the owner's response was especially great. The exterior and interior of the restaurant, the quality of the food, and the owner's customer service are all excellent, so I feel like this type of customer service from the older staff is lowering the value of this restaurant as a whole, which is very disappointing. French restaurant
Nestled in the picturesque Chiba Prefecture, where the sea meets fertile land, LE UN offers a delightful culinary experience that celebrates local flavors. This French restaurant is dedicated to using seasonal ingredients and regional fermented foods like miso and koji, crafted by Chef Shu Ishii, who brings his prestigious background from Switzerland's Grand Maison. The menu at LE UN is a feast for both the eyes and palate; each dish showcases vibrant colors derived from natural materials while emphasizing fresh vegetables.
I loved this French restaurant ! Beautiful and spacious setting (a former sake warehouse) , delicious and original cuisine, polite, efficient and nice staff. The ambiance was also very calm and relaxing. I recommend Le Un !

Overall quality of the menu well exceeded our expectations — some interesting twist to (mostly) simple local produce but not excessively fancy. We did opt for some extra options (upgraded wagyu or king prawn) but I would say these aren’t really required to enjoy the meal. The sake pairing menu (mine included 4 sakes + 1 local mirin) was very well thought out, too, covering an interesting range of flavor profiles. Highly recommended!

(Translated by Google) I visited this restaurant. It had a nice atmosphere, and since it was a weekday there were not many customers, so I was able to relax. The food used local ingredients and was very elaborate. It was a feast for the eyes and the tongue. The building looked like a renovated storehouse and was lovely. The walls near the ceiling looked dirty, probably because they hadn't been repainted, which bothered me as it was a restaurant. I couldn't find where to enter the parking lot, so I just walked right past it. When you turn around you can see the sign, so I think it would be easier to understand if they put up signs to guide people in a good way.

(Translated by Google) The restaurant offers a relaxing atmosphere and delicious, locally sourced cuisine. They even kindly brought a ceramic pet bowl full of water for our beloved dog while seated on the terrace. Thanks to the staff's hospitality, my family and I had a wonderful time. Thank you very much! 😊 The setting is popular with ladies, and there were other customers who were also like that. This hotel restaurant seems like a great place for a girls' night out. The spacious space also seems like it could be used for wedding receptions and other events. The lobby was also very nice, and although we didn't take any commemorative photos, the flowers were beautifully displayed. Since I went there after finishing an important work session, the spacious space and beautifully presented food were extremely refreshing. I think it also helped me regain my energy for my next important task. It's easy to get to from Tokyo for a day trip, and I liked the townscape that's often used as a TV location. The peaceful atmosphere (not crowded like Kawagoe in Saitama) was also a great environment. (After dinner, there were only a few cars around, and they were kind enough to let me park my car and take a short walk.) I also recommend staying at a partner hotel within walking distance and taking an overnight trip. This is a town I'd definitely like to visit again! There was a middle-aged couple next to me who stayed for about two hours, just for drinks. I wonder if there's a time limit during lunchtime?

I am very grateful for the accurate and polite service, whether it was making reservations online or changing reservations over the phone. I don't have the taste or experience to evaluate the taste of the food myself, so I can't really comment, but everything was delicious, delicately prepared and well-made. I highly recommend this restaurant. The parking lot is free, spacious, and easy to use. Soba noodle shop
Not quite our local shrine but nevertheless one of our favourites and has a very long history indeed. The main building itself is absolutely lovely.

(Translated by Google) The soba restaurant next to the parking lot in front of Katori Shrine has limited business hours of 11:30 to 14:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, so it was good to arrive 10 minutes early. The cold and chewy 100 percent soba noodles and miso dengaku with soba brats are very delicious! The atmosphere of the shop is a pure Japanese house and has a very elegant atmosphere. Delicious food in a nice space, yet the recommended wildflower soba set is reasonably priced at 1,200 yen! I want to go eat there again⭐️ (Original)

(Translated by Google) I stopped by after visiting Katori Shrine. It had received high reviews, so I was excited. The restaurant has a charming atmosphere, evoking a sense of history. I arrived before noon, but it was already full, so I had to wait about 10 minutes. Still, it was well worth the wait. The restaurant has a very cool and relaxing atmosphere, allowing me to enjoy my meal at my own pace. This time, I ordered the "Wild Flower Soba." First, I was served miso-marinated soba noodles, followed by a soup with buckwheat husks and pickled cucumbers. All were carefully seasoned and delicious. The main dish of soba noodles had a strong flavor, and the portion was more generous than I expected. For 1,300 yen, I was very satisfied. I'd definitely like to stop by again next time I visit Katori Shrine. (Translated by Google) It's only open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, and the road to the parking lot is narrow, but it's worth a visit. The proprietress has a humble personality, and the chef has a lively voice coming from the back. The interior of the restaurant has an old-style Japanese house feel, and you can go up through the garden. The delicious soba set starts with cold buckwheat soup. It was perfect. (Translated by Google) It's the best. It comes with soba-gaki and buckwheat soup, so it feels like a full course meal and is very satisfying. It's great value for the price. But you have to wait. I waited for 40 minutes. It was sold out by 12 o'clock and all the customers who came later were disappointed and left, so I recommend coming early.

(Translated by Google) My first visit in quite a while. It seems like the menu has changed since the last time I visited. Nonohana soba is 100% the price of Sarashina soba, and comes with buckwheat soup and soba noodles, but it's extremely cheap at 1,200 yen. There seems to be a hierarchy of soba > pasta > ramen > udon, but these days there are ramen that easily cost over 1,200 yen, so being able to get 100% soba at this price is a rare treat. The soup, soba noodles, and soba noodles are all good. This is a recommended soba restaurant that I don't really want to tell you about because it has few business days and the hurdles are high.
