Myoko in 2 days

If you only have 2 days to spend in Myoko, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Myoko in Niigata Prefecture is known for its deep powder snow and classic Japanese ski resorts, drawing winter sports enthusiasts from around the world. The area is part of Myoko-Togakushi Renzan National Park, offering scenic hiking, forests, and alpine views once the snow melts. Traditional onsen towns such as Akakura Onsen provide natural hot-spring baths and a relaxed, old-fashioned atmosphere. With easy access from Tokyo via train, it’s a convenient mountain escape that feels distinctly rural and local.
With favorites like Lake Nojiri Naumann Elephant Museum, Akakura Kanko Resort, and 山の家カフェ Yamanoie cafe, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like EIKA and 山の家カフェ Yamanoie cafe so you can get the best taste of Myoko while you’re here. Kagami ike pond is a stunning mountain-backed lake with calm, reflective waters and picturesque hiking trails. The surrounding Tokakushi Mountain Range and vibrant foliage create a mesmerizing scene, especially during autumn when the colorful leaves are mirrored on the lake's surface. Visitors can also enjoy the convenience of Kagami-ike Donguri House, a cafe restaurant located nearby. Accessible by both car and foot, this peaceful destination offers breathtaking landscapes for photography, particularly during morning or sunset.
Located in Togakushi area in Nagano prefecture. It is a beautiful lake in autumn hues.

One of the best views in the region. The lake with alpine mountains in behind are stunning. I want to come back in Autumn. Tip: there’s a very nice 55 minute woods hike in from the main road. Watch for the yellow trail line on the area map. Additional trails continue up to the Alpine cedars shrine areas.
Brock L — Google review
Truly worth to visit this lake. Very beautiful specially during autumn. In morning you can see various layers of colors and This is definitely hidden gem
Rohan P — Google review
Totally worth the walk or drive. It's peaceful and the trees look really mesmerizing around the pond. Best time might be around morning or sunset. Afternoon is just going to be really hot.

A truly beautiful lake. The water is a mirror and it is framed by gorgeous trees.
Yeo F — Google review
One of my favorite views in all of Japan. It’s difficult to come here when there are no clouds, but it’s a unforgettable view. You can eat some great Soba crepes here as well!
Noah S — Google review
Very beautiful place to go for a short hike. During late afternoon the light is great to enjoy the breathtaking landscape around it and take some beautiful photos. The hiking trail to get there is easy and with signs along the way to show the right path. It is also easy to go by car and there is a nice cafe near the lake. It was one of the highlights of our trip to Nagano.

Beautiful lake, easy to find parking during weekday. A nap in front of the lake is very nice.

Lake Nojiri Naumann Elephant Museum is a fascinating place to explore the history and culture of Arai. The museum showcases earthenware vessels from the Hida ruins, ancient folk art, and farm implements. Visitors can also marvel at the impressive life-sized Naumann elephant specimens excavated at Lake Nojiri. Additionally, near the entrance of National Route 18, there is a captivating life-sized Naumann elephant family with their babies, perfect for memorable photos.
Very quirky little museum . Cheap as well

This is a great afternoon stop for the kids. It is a little pricey but not too bad. Our kids loved the interactive area on the first floor. We ended up spending as much time there as the rest of the museum combined. The store has some nice little items as well.
Greg L — Google review
It is a very small, yet lovingly curated museum. The exhibition is thoughtfully arranged, and the specimens are in excellent condition. Particularly fascinating is the story of the elephant discoveries made by the German naturalist Naumann. Visitors gain intriguing insights into the prehistoric world: fossils, impressive bone finds, and— as a special highlight—an original, exceptionally well-preserved mammoth head make the tour a truly memorable experience.

Bodies of Water
Imori-ike Pond, located in Ikenotaira Onsen on the Myoko Plateau, is a small yet picturesque body of water with a circumference of 500 meters. The pond is renowned for its mirror-like surface that beautifully reflects the majestic Mt. Myoko on clear days. Surrounding the pond are lush wet plants and white birch trees, creating a serene and scenic atmosphere.
Very nice place with a lovely cafe. You can also join the snow hiking tour at 9am there.

I guess it wasnt quite Autumn yet so its quite a let down. The sky was also cloudy and gloomy so the pond wasnt as beautiful as i expected it to be
Elizabeth L — Google review
Do you hate Japan's hot, humid summers? Then this is the place for you to escape the heat! Beautiful views, a relaxing pond walk, or more strenuous mountain trails are available. There are plenty of parking spaces in different locations, though during the height of summer this is a popular destination. The information center has public toilets, a small museum, staff to answer questions, a wonderful seating area overlooking the pond, and quite a nice coffee stand with some baked goods. It is a very relaxing place to visit when the crowds are not in attendance.

Nice walking place. Visitor center has some neat science exhibits and a small souvenir shop.

Ski resort
Nestled in the stunning Myoko Kogen region, Myoko Suginohara Ski Resort is a winter wonderland that caters to skiers of all skill levels. With its well-groomed slopes and a dedicated snow park, it’s perfect for families and beginners alike. The resort boasts breathtaking views of distant Mount Fuji, adding to the picturesque experience.
We had two amazing days skiing here. Long runs and brilliant snow. Lift pass Q only busy at 9 when lots of people arrive and that’s the only time we queued. Once people are on the mountain there are no real queues ( this was mid week ). Great for all levels ( you can get your pass on line also which means no Q, scan you bar code, collect pass and off you go (WAmazing)).Usual places to grab lunch on the mountain or at the base
Martin W — Google review
Great ski resort, pretty icy conditions in the middle of March. Very empty on a weekday. The 8.5km ride from top to bottom is a good leg workout! Our instructor was a pro and very helpful to improve!
Akira — Google review
Love the nice long runs! Our favourite in the area so far, we were lucky to have powder snow for 3 days. Fantastic slopes for all levels. For snowboarders we suggest to avoid going on the way to the bottom as it gets very flat some walking is required before getting to the bottom lift to bring u up to the main chair lifts.
J ( — Google review
My favorite resort! I tried many of the Nagan area ski resorts and Suginohara is the one that I keep coming back to the most. Tree skiing is amazing, a lot of snow, long wide slopes to practice, and not crowded:)
Mindaugas T — Google review
Long groomed runs were such a pleasure to ski down! The resort is big, so there were barely queues once we got onto the mountain. My favorite resort in Myoko - chairlifts moved pretty fast when there wasn’t wind and there was plenty to choose from for beginners to advanced skiers. The chairlifts with bubbles were helpful on days where it was dumping.
Janel L — Google review
Probably my favorite resort. I have been skiing in Japan for 17 years. This resort is modern with fast quad lifts and the gondola. The snow park is possibly the widest run in Japan. Huge powder runs. A cute little village section with some good local food. The only downside is the access.. really need a car to get out here
Andrew H — Google review
Good runs for all ski or board abilities, great views of surrounding mountains/Mt Fuji on a clear day. The park is one of the best in the area despite a few kooky features. Lifts are all quick with a good gondola taking you 3km up mountain. Restaurant options are good but not many vegetarian options available. The 8.5km run is great fun and will burn the legs of all skiing or boarding abilities
Dylan G — Google review
Pretty good stretch. After you reach the base of the gondola with a ski lift the repeated area is covered by a 15min goldola ride and a long stretch back. There are several beginner/intermediate routes down the main slope to keep it interesting. The more intermediate/difficult slopes are another lift ride up. The plus point is definately that you get a longer slope to enjoy between gondola trips. The cons being only one area has toilets/restaurants.

Naena Waterfall, often referred to as the Earthquake Waterfall, is a breathtaking natural wonder located in the Myoko area of Japan. This stunning waterfall cascades 55 meters down a basalt cliff into the Seki River, creating an impressive spectacle that resonates with a powerful roar throughout the surrounding hills. Accessible via a scenic trail and charming suspension bridges, visitors can enjoy a leisurely fifteen-minute hike through lush greenery and picturesque landscapes before reaching this magnificent site.
This place was really wonderful. Such a kind of natural beauty I have never seen before. You can go with your kids also.

A very picturesque waterfall, with an easy, pleasant walk in. Luckily the bear alarm and loud growling came from the other side of the river🐻
David P — Google review
One of the top 100 waterfalls in Japan if you are visiting Nagano must visit place. There is small trekking you need to do to reach the waterfall.
Ashish T — Google review
Really good waterfall, close from the parking. The scenery and view is wonderful. Worth the visit. You can also enjoy fishing and eat fresh fish roast it on fire.
Teofilo Y — Google review
Magnificent waterfall which can easily be reached by a short walk of 15 mins.
Christo A — Google review
The hike wasn’t that difficult. You will be crossing two bridges. A lot of children and elderly people were able to do it easily. If you want to swim I suggest you go during a sunny weather. There is no path going directly near the waterfalls. You have to go through the big rocks if you really want to go near it. If you are there to just take a picture and breathe in the beauty of the it then the waterfalls is worth the hike.
Rei E — Google review
A beautiful waterfall located on the boarder between Niigata and Nagano prefectures. There is a large parking lot, and the walk to the waterfall is very easy. I recommend getting to the area before 10, as that's when many of the tour groups begin to show up. Very picturesque!

Kurohime Kogen Snow Park is a ski resort that offers ski lifts, a ski school, and a kids' play area with snowmobiles. In the summertime, visitors can enjoy flowering meadows. The park has wide runs and enough space for skiers and boarders alike. It is also beginner-friendly with its wide and flat courses suitable even for children to enjoy snowmobiles. Additionally, they have intermediate level slopes but are limited in size.
I arrived at Kurohime Kogen Snow Park about an hour and a half before closing with hopes of fitting in a couple of runs at the end of the day. It was extremely easy to buy a lift pass, and for quite a reasonable price, as well (I payed ¥3,800 for a 3 hour pass). Though there were only a handful of runs to choose from, all of the ones that I tried were very enjoyable. They ranged in how challenging and long they were, but I was able to hit every course at least once in that span of two hours. While some might argue that there isn’t so much to do at this snow park, I thought the experience was more than satisfying enough for me. I thought all the runs were perfect in length (about 4-8 minutes each) surrounded by wonderful scenery. Not to mention, the slopes were nearly empty this time of year! All the lift staff were very friendly and generous, with one even allowing me to ride just as it was preparing to close. At the end of my runs, I stopped at the little restaurant at the bottom of the slopes for a refreshment, and the one lady working there on Christmas was very friendly, too. If you’re in the area, I definitely recommend making a stop at Kurohime Kogen Snow Park. Fantastic fun on the slopes, and the view from the top is worth the price of admission alone!

Had a wonderful time. Nice base area with cafeteria. Reasonable rates. Nice high speed detachable quad. Good for beginners. Not very many trails. Awesome section for dogs to ski! They can take lifts!
Mike B — Google review
Really cute mountain slope where you can bring your doggies to ride. Doggie watching is also fun! Simple short slopes with a few intermediates at the top.

Lovely ski resort, We went with our dogs, And it has nice indoor dog run as well. They loved its both inside and outside.
Faizan M — Google review
First time at a snow park with school age kids. We were not planning to do skiing but kids wanted some snow experience. Location is not far from the Nagano town and is good for day trip if you don't mind driving. The drove to ski park is relatively easy, better than expected. We spent about 3hrs at the family area park where the kids got to ride on a variety of snow mobile equipment. We took the ski lift to the top and slid down. Note that most instructions are in Japanese and we have to use google translate. The staff can't communicate in English too and hence need to use google translate too. This ski park seemed to cater more for locals as there were many elementary school kids on school excursion to the park. We rented 2 pairs of gloves as ours weren't warm enough..very pricey. Approx 2000yen per pair and they weren't warm either! Overall kids enjoyed the trip and it's inexpensive for the 3hrs use of ski family area
C T — Google review
The weather was really warm so it was perfect for sledding and building snowman but not so much for skiing. Nonetheless we had a lot of fun and the kids were entertained. The food is on the very expensive side but it was good and quick.
Wayne Y — Google review
We came here because they cater to dogs and even allow dogs to ride up one of the lifts and then run down the mountain! We enjoyed seeing the many dogs and friendly owners. The facilities are quite nice and the guests are primarily families with many more skiers than snowboarders. Unfortunately the old men running the lifts had bad attitudes and little concern for guests boarding or exiting the lifts. The old man inside the control room of the high speed quad was actually sleeping. Some chairs had exposed grass on the exit that could have easily been covered up. Other than when I boarded with my dog no one even held the chair as I got on. The lifts may as well have been unattended. Maybe it was just me, because I’m a foreigner or a snowboarder, but we will probably not return.
Brett F — Google review
Decent place for beginners. They have a couples spits for intermediate levels but it's short. Overall great place for family.

Had a delightful dining experience at EIKA, a cozy eatery known for its delectable dishes. The restaurant may be petite in size but certainly not lacking in flavor. The cold Tsingtao brews were the perfect accompaniment to the superb meals. A return visit is definitely on the cards to sample their renowned ramen dish. With every bite, we were treated to scrumptious cuisine and received warm and friendly service from the staff.
The dumplings were excellent and we loved the vibe of the restaurant. The waiter was extremely welcoming and friendly towards both locals and visitors/tourists. We really enjoyed the spicy ramen and the sour pork as well. I highly recommend this cozy place for a nice warm meal.

The food was delicious - especially the karaage chicken! The owner was also very welcoming and gave us so many ideas of things to do in the area. I would definitely come back here in a heartbeat!

We visited during peak season (December) and the owner tried their very best to accommodate us even though he was very busy. The owner is humble and honest, and provides a personable quality service. Food was delicious and very affordable, especially for the portion size - would highly recommend anyone wanting to try Chinese for a little change in the area!

This restaurant is amazing. Fair prices and the staff is super friendly and accommodating. The food was amazing! I would call ahead on weekends and make reservations because they are one of few restaurants in the area. We kept going back because of the staff and food. I’d give this place a 10 out of 5! I rarely write reviews but they definitely deserve it!

Hot dang the food here is tasty. Suprsingly, the Ramen with Wantons was our favourite Dish, not what I would expect form a Chinese place but it was great none the less. Super affordable too, think we paid under 22,00 Yen for 2x mains and a side.

What a lovely and cute cafe with a mixture of both nature and simple delights. The staff was extremely helpful and patient. I loved the use of seasonal vegetables in the my pasta. Amazing restaurant and cafe, we had to go twice. Wonderful staff and a super cozy environment. The menu was full of options with reasonable prices. Vegan and vegetarian options available on the menu too. They have a wide variety of snacks and cakes to have with your meal or takeaway too. Probably some of the best food in town and the only one with western options. Didn't require a booking to sit in, but made one anyways. Last order is 6:30pm. We loved the Green Curry, the Spaghetti Bolognaise, pizza and most importantly the home made Apple Pie.

We've eaten here with the family (ages 30-80+) multiple times. The food is always excellent, with a rotating menu of different pastas and rice dishes. Food is served in a timely fashion, the owners are friendly, and the atmosphere is relaxed. We always think of it as the DIY Cafe, as the owner has obviously built many of the tables and additions to the restaurant. The views of the Japanese Alps are also quite spectacular. Both indoor and outdoor seating available and parking is adequate.

LOTTE ARAI RESORT is a premium mountainside retreat that has recently reopened after being closed for a decade. Nestled between Myoko and the coast, this legendary resort is renowned for its abundant snowfall, making it a haven for powder skiing enthusiasts. The resort offers refined rooms, impeccable service, and essential amenities such as complimentary Wi-Fi and parking.
One of the best ski resorts in the world! Nice and large rooms with lots of variety available for different price points. Lots of lounges to relax and spend time with companions. Amazing public bath with natural onsen and outdoor bath. Staff were polite and very helpful. Restaurants can be improved upon with variety and quality...
Que — Google review
We stayed as a group of 4 at Lotte Arai for 3 nights last weekend. The rooms are well appointed and comfortable but unfortunately the restaurant capacity does not adequately cope with the hotel guests. There was a queue at breakfast with many people waiting for a table at the buffet. We decided instead to get some breakfast at the bakery that had been temporarily opened and paid 4400 yen each. Unfortunately the food was limited and some items had run out and not been replaced. The coffee has also run out and only got refilled as we were leaving to go skiing. When we complained on checking out we were told “sorry” and not compensated for the inadequate breakfast. The cafe at the village station is not big enough to cope with the crowd and there were no seats inside the dining area. Restaurant bookings were hard to obtain in some of the restaurants. All in all a very poor dining experience for a five star resort. On the final night we were kept awake by a big group of guests in the corridor speaking loudly for about an hour at 1.30am. There was no response from management who would have clearly heard the noise in reception.

My wife and I had a great ski experience at Arai. We spent two days on the slopes and were blown away by the incredible Japan powder. For a short stay, the location was perfect. While there isn’t much to explore off the premises, the amenities were outstanding. One of my favorite moments was unwinding in the Cottage Lounge after a day of skiing, sipping a cocktail, and taking in the beautiful mountain view. The only downside was my experience at the rental shop. As someone who had never skied in powder before, I wasn't advised to rent powder skis, so I opted for all-mountain skis instead. While they were fine, given the deep powder conditions, I asked to swap them out after a few runs, especially since I had already paid for two days of rental. Unfortunately, I was told there would be an additional fee for the swap, which I felt should’ve been a simple exchange and was contrary to the exceptional service we experienced otherwise. On a positive note, the free shuttle to and from the train station was extremely convenient and easy to use (just make sure to make a reservation). Overall, it was a fun experience and I’d definitely recommend it.

I came here in the summer to check out the place as I know I'll be visiting in winter (plus prices are fab in summer!) it has so many activities to do, it's really great for kids. I'd say you can easily do 2 nights here with the activities + onsen. I didn't book restaurants beforehand and it was fully booked the night I stayed so we drove down to Myoko to have sushi dinner which turned out to be fantastic. I booked the characters room too as I grew up eating it as a snacks. I LOVED it. Everything was so cute.

Service is awful - 30 min on check-in in off season, seriously? Breakfast: empty plates and you have to tell them to refill several times before they actually do. And it is 1.5h before breakfast time finishes. The staff is blind or what!? Dinner: 6000 yen for Japanese Shabu Shabu and sukiyaki each - it is a joke🙈 4 pieces of small meat and a lot of onion😂😂 Don’t waste money for this hotel - better find smth smaller and cosier.

Steak house service & menu very good. Breakfast choice is very good. The family room was comfortable. Swimming pool pleasant but disappointed to have to pay extra to use it. Bar drinks are expensive and beware of the table charge that is added to the bill. Overall, it's a good hotel, but I feel it is overpriced.

Lovely even in the autumn. Visited with spouse and my 9 year old boy. Lot of fun activities for everyone. Good food and friendly staff.

Nice area and room was simple but fine. Not exactly what I expected as you had to pay for the pool and service wasn’t the best! Wouldn’t recommend 😒. Steak restaurant was nice though!

Ski resort
Arai Snow Resort is a ski destination catering to all skill levels, offering runs for skiing and snowboarding, as well as cross-country trails. The exclusive Lotte Hotel in the resort area provides luxurious accommodation with amenities like an indoor 50m swimming pool, fitness center, shopping mall, ziplining, and over 10 onsite dining options. Situated on Mt.
Amazing small ski resort. The snow and the slopes are fantastic. This resort exceeded expectations and wasn’t busy at all. However, the mountain is small with few lifts.
Cayman S — Google review
Great resort with ski in / out. Rooms are clean and comfortable. Onsen and massage facilities on site. Food options within the resort are limited and not the best
Faris L — Google review
Too expensive and too crowded! The lifts were not seated to capacity. Sometimes Only ONE person per car designed for FOUR people! And the first class lines moved quickly but everyone else (who still payed ¥7,500 for a day pass) had to wait in LONG, SLOW MOVING lines! Don't waste your money or your time. Ride elsewhere
Bryan B — Google review
Good for intermediate or advanced riders seeking powdery off-piste skiing or snowboarding. Not good for beginners
Ekapol T — Google review
The ski experience here was amazing. The courses are very well made, and are divided into categories based on the skill of the individual (beginner, intermediate and expert). The courses are made fair for everyone and are all well maintained. For some people, ski lift tickets can be included into the hotel price, but most will have to purchase one. There is also a gondola which can be used by skiers, as well as people who just want to enjoy the beautiful views. Ski equipment and cloths rental is also available.
Arseni I — Google review
Hotel is nice and cozy. Ski resort is perfect for powder lovers. Maybe not very beginner friendly but if you are an advance skier or snowboarder. I am sure you will love the powder snow here!
Akane S — Google review
One of my favorite ski resorts in Japan! Awesome view, fluffy and deep powder! Great international ski school Myoko Snowsports!
DaHuZi J — Google review
Skiing in mid December There has been 100-180cm of snow but they still won't open most of the runs. All ski instructors believe they should be open with the amount of snow but nothing has opened up in 4 days we've been here. They haven't even prepared the lifts for these "almost open" runs. Unfortunately I get the feeling that it's to save costs by running only one lift. Pretty disappointed as some of us were hoping to learn (especially with the advertisment of so many green runs) and all that is available are some pretty challenging blues. I understand that a lot of this is condition dependant, but this feels like cost cutting, hence the review. That said, the 2 blues that are open are incredible, the powder is lovely, snow is dry and crisp, and the individual staff members are lovely. The lessons, while expensive, are good quality and cater to all levels. Attached is an image of the snow cam at the closed lift with no chairs attached

Akakura Kanko Resort

4.1
(908)
Ski resort
Nestled in the picturesque setting of Mount Myōkō, Akakura Kanko Resort is one of the oldest ski resorts globally and offers a range of experiences for skiers of all levels. The resort features beginner-friendly slopes, challenging ungroomed courses for expert skiers, and a snow park. The iconic Akakura Kanko Hotel provides a luxurious ski-in, ski-out experience with its vibrant red roofs and proximity to the slopes.
Akakura Kanko Hotel is a nice place to stop for a cup of coffee, lunch or just for the views while skiing at the Akakura/Myoko slopes. Easy access (ski in & out). Excellent food and deserts to die for.
Katarina G — Google review
Literally waited in the lift ticket queue for 1hour yesterday! (Monday From 9:45am to 10:45) Only one person taking payment, but 2 staff at ticket counter. Ridiculous. If you’re buying 1-3day tickets use the QR code advance payment option and skip the line up, but more online options need to be made available. We only wanted a 4 hour ticket and therefore had to line up. Resort itself was fine, no lift queues.
Terry T — Google review
Awesome snow sports area, tons of ungroomed runs. Will definitely be back.
E Z — Google review
A variety of runs. Awesome off piste area to explore and have fun in deep powder. There is also a kebab shop at bottom of Hotel 2 chair lift. Love the kebab there!
DaHuZi J — Google review
The better side of the Akakura resort with more challenging runs, better terrains and tree skiing, enough to keep you entertained for 2 to 3 days. However, despite Covid, the place gets very crowded over the weekend with long queue to get the lift tickets and much longer queue to get on the Gondola. There are less freshies to be found as compared to other resorts (despite no presence of foreign tourists) and hence, I will avoid this place once international travel is allowed. To get here, take train from Tokyo to Nagano station, and from there to Myokokogen station and get the hotel/ryokan to pick you up from the station. The Kanko resort is about 5mins walk to Akakura Onsen. There are also plenty of ski in ski out accommodations in this area.
Emma T — Google review
Great mountain but the queue to buy tickets in the morning is ridiculous. Other large resorts have already gone online, so no wait needed for pre-bought tickets, while Akakura is still paper based. This wastes 30 min of a ski day… for which we still pay for tickets. Please please put in automated gates and online purchase.
Andrew D — Google review
Very nice hotel at Myoko Kogen ski resort. And the food that they serve is spectacular as well. We are the only foreign guests when we are there and the ski is not yet open for another week even though it is snowing everyday already.

Ski & Snowboard Areas
Nestled in the heart of Japan, Akakura Onsen Ski Area is a winter wonderland that caters to skiers and snowboarders of all skill levels. With 14 diverse courses stretching along a scenic mountain ridge, this resort offers ample opportunities for beginners to hone their skills on long, wide slopes while more experienced adventurers can revel in deep powder and thrilling tree skiing. Families will appreciate the ski school and dedicated snow parks designed for kids, ensuring everyone has a fantastic time on the slopes.
Akakura Kanko Akakura Onsen ski areas in Myoko are well groomed, long and not crowded at all. And together with nearby Suginohara it’s a magical place to ski and snowboard too. The local food is exceptional.
Katarina G — Google review
The ski resort is connected to Akakura Kanko which I would suggest purchase combines two mountain tickets else you will fill it too small for one mountain alone. There's a big flat space in the middle of the mountain where the restaurants are.
Kenneth T — Google review
It's a quiet "one street" town and at the tail-end of the ski season it's even quieter, seemingly populated by more Australian ski instructors than locals or even tourists. Food choices are limited and did not pass muster for the more discerning taste buds. Ski slopes are definitely very comfortable for the absolute beginner. Runs are relatively short and combined with the leisurely lifts makes for a very relaxed ski experience. It has gorgeous views and with a little bit of investment this town could really light up.
George L — Google review
A lovely ski resort perfect for beginners and low intermediate skiers. Advantages include wide gentle slopes and a charming small town vibe. Disadvantages are the longish traverses between lifts, which are aging and slow.
Ian B — Google review
This place is heaven. Getting the best snow in all of Japan, maybe even all of the world. This is my go to when taking a snow trip away from home. When there is enough snow this place is a big open playground. With plenty of lifts and runs to suit all levels of skill. There is plenty of accommodation choices and not so many restaurants. This mountain is roughly a 6 hour drive away from Tokyo. I would recommend this place to anyone who is looking for an escape to the best snow possible. You need to visit during Jan and Feb for the best possible fresh powder available.
Chris C — Google review
One of the two historical ski slope located at the foot of Mt. Myoko. This gelande tends to be lower in altitude than the Kanko side but has nice runs in the trees and wide groomed slopes. The slopes are located wide along the mountain so there are quite a few flat traverse you need to do in order to get to one side to the other, but each slope tends to be pretty empty even on a Saturday. Nighter runs until 10PM but not included in the one day or the multi-day pass. Get the 1day passport or the nighter pass separately if you want to go long.
Riki S — Google review
lack of signage and you have to take off snowboard or ski to reach next liftchair. Not user friendly indeed.

Train station
Jōetsumyōkō Station is a convenient transportation hub for travelers coming from Tokyo, with the Hokuriku Shinkansen providing direct access. The station offers amenities such as a bento shop, tourist information area, and JR Rail ticket booth. It serves as a gateway to the Snow Country and provides easy access to ski resorts during winter. The station is well-maintained with clear signage and multilingual ticket machines.
The sky widens here; the air tastes faintly of the sea. Jōetsumyōkō stands between mountains and water — a crossroads of weather and stories. The train hums through, leaving echoes of rain on glass. Tourist Tip: Gateway to Myoko Kogen ski resorts. Local bus connections from the west exit. Excellent winter destination with onsens and powder snow.

Very clean and peaceful station. Shinkansen schedule is almost every hour. Going to Tokyo from the station only takes less than 2hrs . And Kanazawa 1.5 hrs. View is spectacular during winter. Lotte Arai ski resort is only few minutes by car.

A well-needed shinkansen station which allows visitors coming from Tokyo to bypass a change at Echigo-Yuzawa. The station provides a bento shop, tourist information area with local goods and a JR Rail ticket booth supported by friendly and competent staff. Relatively new, Joetsumyoko Station makes accessing the Snow Country more convenient than ever.
Josh F — Google review
Station serving joetsu city. Very easy to get around and find a bus or rental car. During the winter the place becomes magical with access to ski resort. Please note that the HOKURIKU SHINKANSEN stops here and not the JŌETSU SHINKANSEN for Niigata so please watch out. Otherwise, there are some restaurants and shops around the station.
Lucas L — Google review
Nice train station. Feels quite be or renovated. The signage is clear so easy to use as long as you can read Japanese or English. The ticket machines have more language choices. The visitor center is attached to a small eatery and box lunch shop.

Pomodoro is a cozy pizzeria that offers an exceptional dining experience. The woodfire oven-baked home special beef pizza is highly recommended, with the quality of dough and ingredients being perfect. The funghi and prosciutto pizzas are equally delicious, and the gelato con caffe is a must-try for its perfect balance of bitterness and sweetness. The staff members are friendly, adding to the welcoming atmosphere.
We ordered the funghi pizza and prosciutto pizza and both were equally delicious!!! :) The gelato con caffe was perfectly bitter and sweet and amazing as well. Very cozy vibe, and all of the staff members were very friendly. Highly recommend!

This is going to sound exaggerated and ridiculous but their home special pizza (beef) was the best tasting pizza I've ever had. I have a woodfire oven at home. I've had really good pizza abroad e.g. Italy, Switzerland, etc. For for me, the quality of the dough and ingredients, their respective ratios, and the cook time, were perfect. The taste and textures were as good as pizza gets.

Pizza perfection. This little 2 man shop is a little slow but totally worth the wait. The guy behind the counter works the pizza oven like no other with every spare second being devoted to hand making each pizza crust. Menu has good variety, good prices and good value. Tried to go back again but we got in too late to get a table.

Fantastic authentic Italian pizza & pasta in Japan! Brilliant service by beautiful Japanese owner. Husband is the chef, trained in Italy. No bookings but keep trying till you get in. It's totally worth it....go twice!!! :)

Ramen restaurant
If you're on the hunt for an authentic ramen experience, look no further than Omori Arai. This beloved local eatery is renowned for its Joetsu Tonkotsu Ramen, which boasts a rich and flavorful broth enhanced by the delightful aroma of wakame seaweed. The homemade noodles are perfectly bouncy, making each slurp a joy! With a menu that also features gyoza and rice dishes, there's something to satisfy every palate.
Do you want a real ramen experience? Delicious, filling food? Quick and friendly service? Get in and out and see how the locals do it? Then this is the place for you. The various ramen, gyoza, and rice dishes are all excellent and worth exploring. This place is filled with locals, so plan to go early or you will be waiting. However, they do have 1st and 2nd floor seating, and a massive kitchen so they get people in and out without too much of a wait. Servers are always friendly and you'll see the same faces year after year. This is real ramen at its best. Parking is free and there is room for probably 20 cars, but the slots are rather narrow and this really is the local hotspot so be careful if you don't have a midget car.

A quite big and famous Tonkotsu-Shoyu Ramen noodles restaurant in the area. The soup tasted very unique, felt fish and Tonkotsu soup mixed. Cash only, a big parking lot is available.

(Translated by Google) I went there after hearing about it. The weekday-only lunch set menu is not only tasty, but also has a lot of volume. All this for 1200 yen. (Translated by Google) I'm from Kashiwazaki and always go to Matsuchaya, but recently they've been getting a bit irritated by their mysterious system, so I went to the original Omori... The waiting line, ordering, and checkout here are all pretty basic, but that's OK! On the topic of bean sprout ramen and wonton... First of all, the soup...huh? ...Matsuchaya's is overwhelmingly better...It's not bad, but I had high expectations for the original...it's a shame. Noodles...The old Matsuchaya medium-thick curly noodles are good, but a little too soft. Char siu...This is the worst part. It's dry and flavorless. They put it in the soup to make the stock, but I guess they don't add it to the soy sauce seasoning...it's leftover meat. I don't understand why it's so popular...Do the people who give it 5 stars have any palates? I'll go back to Matsuchaya...
