If you only have 1 day to spend in Kamiamakusa, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Kamiamakusa offers scenic island landscapes along the Ariake Sea, with sweeping views from the Amakusa Gokyo bridge route that links its islands to mainland Kumamoto. Visitors come for fresh local seafood, coastal hot spring resorts, and easy access to marine activities such as sea kayaking, cruising, and seasonal dolphin-watching tours. Parts of the area lie within Unzen-Amakusa National Park, providing hiking, quiet beaches, and lookout points over scattered islets. Its relaxed, small-town atmosphere makes it a useful base for exploring the wider Amakusa archipelago.
With favorites like Amakusa Tenku no Fune, L'isola Terrace Amakusa, and Sea Donut Aquarium, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. L'isola Terrace Amakusa is a multipurpose facility located on prime real estate with stunning views of Shimabara Bay. It features a restaurant with ocean-view seating, a shop offering local souvenirs, and a bar. The facility also includes children's play areas and shops selling South Sea knickknacks, clothing, and accessories. Visitors can enjoy delicious food, friendly service, and a chic environment by the pier.
They have many types of ship-pam (salt bread), including normal, mentai, curry, melon, chocolate, caramel, blueberry etc.

Arguably the most おしゃれ restaurant in Amakusa. About a 45 minute drive from Hondo, I always make it a point to stop by when going to and fro from Kumamoto. The pizzas look great and there are a ton of desserts to choose from. They’ve got a pretty decent menu, but I always end up getting the garlic prawns. What I love the most is the environment though... such a chic area by the pier. I come here whenever I yearn for something that reminds me of the big city 😂

Comfortable spot with good restaurant and easy souvenir/shopping area. Can have a nice rest when waiting for boat rides.

The Dolphin Watching cruise is amazing! The cruise will ensure you'll get a good view of the dolphins. The terrace itself, where you'll board the cruise, is ok. The view is nice, food is good but aside from that, there aren't much nearby. Although I haven't tried other activities like biking. Overall, it's a good place to visit.

Amakusa Pearl Garden & Sea Donut Aquarium is a newly opened complex tourist facility that offers a variety of attractions for families and couples. Visitors can explore the fashionable cafe "cafe do mar," souvenir shops, and enjoy the sea view for free. The aquarium features dolphin shows and participatory events, while children can have fun at the playground equipment. Although there are some concerns about floating garbage in the sea nearby, overall it's a trendy destination with something for everyone to enjoy.
My daughter really enjoyed this place.

(Translated by Google) We visited on a cloudy day on March 16, 2025! It would have been great if the weather had been sunny, but it was chilly and drizzling, so we just took a short walk. There were plenty of souvenir shops and restaurants, so we enjoyed it very much. We hesitated to go to the aquarium because there were only two adults, but if we had children with us, it would be worth going because we could touch the fish directly! The view of the Amakusa bridge was also great, and as expected, we ordered a three-color bowl for the meal, with the main dishes being the "mini tempura bowl," "mini seafood bowl," and "mini steak bowl," and we were surprised by the freshness of the seafood, which was freshly fried or grilled! As expected, when it comes to food in Amakusa, not only the seafood, but also the vegetables and meat (chicken/beef/pork) are the best! The seaweed and nori were especially delicious!

(Translated by Google) I visited on a weekday in July. Once you pass through the large gate, you'll find a spacious area. Souvenir shops and restaurants are lined up to the right. There's a photo spot with a windmill in the back. On the left is a shop where you can buy pearls. You can either walk to the back of the aquarium or take a 100 yen one-way bus. Reserve your interaction ticket at the automatic ticket machine at the aquarium entrance, and purchase your admission fee there as well. There are three time slots. I recommend checking the website to confirm the times. The aquarium is small, so you can see everything in about an hour. I was impressed by the dolphins we got to see up close. If you go, it's a good idea to purchase an interaction ticket and touch the dolphins to make a memorable memory. There are also areas where you can feed red sea bream and touch sharks and starfish, so it's fun even with children. However, it gets hot in the middle of summer, so be sure to take precautions against the heat and stay hydrated. There are stairs in places, so strollers are not recommended. We were able to touch the dolphins, which was reasonably priced and my daughter had a great time! We got to see them jump up close, which was very impressive! The exhibits were interesting, and we took our time reading and looking around, so quite a bit of time flew by 😂 (Original)

Interesting aquarium! There are parking lots right outside the aquarium but it can get busy. From the carpark there is a bus that can take you to the aquarium for 100 yen. There are also dolphin shows and interaction timeslots! Must visit if you love aquariums!

We travel from Kumamoto by bus, the journey is about 1.5 hour, it’s 10 mins walk from the bus stop, the aquarium is very kid friendly, a must see dolphin show every hour which u can get ticket at entry office, there are lots to see around there but would recommend to plan ahead if you want to have more plans

If you go on a weekend try to get early to get a parking spot. There Is a cute pink dolphin bus that will take you to the aquarium for 100yen. At the entrance you can get you ticket from the machine. There is no register or someone to talk to. Once there you will see a square aquarium at the entrance that has 3 big turtles and some sharks. Then you have to cross a little bridge to the donut aquarium. They have some special time where you can pet and feed the dolphins. Make sure to line up for that too. What I liked about this place is that you can touch the starfish. The kids were happy and the stuff are friendly

This is a small aquarium so don't expect to much but it was actually interesting enough. I always feel sorry for the dolphins that these places insist on keeping but apart from that it was worth a visit if you are in the area. The nearby restaurants area was good.

This was the best aquarium experience while in Japan across Honshu Shikoku and kyushu. Their dolphin performances were spectacular, and so many interaction options for kids with ocean animals. The dolphon feeding is a must. They also had a nice kumamon shuttle bus, and kumamon jumping castle in the playground. A great daytrip.
Alex M — Google review
So very weird, and yet SO worth a visit! The staff at this semi-submerged aquarium really love to joke with customers via tongue-in-cheek comments on the info' notices next to the fish here, though you need to be able to read Japanese or have a helpful Japanese friend nearby in order to get the jokes. That aside, the variety and method of the display areas makes it worth the entrance fee. Just one caveat, the restaurant on-site is best avoided.

Mio Amakusa & Gokyo Sea Cruise – A Golden Week Highlight Visited Mio Amakusa during Golden Week—it was quite lively with plenty of visitors, but surprisingly, only a few people joined the Gokyo Sea Cruise when we boarded. The cruise was both fun and relaxing, with stunning views of the coastline and calm waters. One of the highlights was seeing all four of the iconic Amakusa bridges from the sea—a unique perspective you don’t get from land. Despite the crowds on shore, the boat ride felt peaceful and uncrowded, making it a perfect getaway moment during the holiday rush. 🚢 Amakusa Gokyo Sea Cruise • Standard Fare: • Adults (13+): ¥2,000 • Children (3–12): ¥1,000 • Online Reservation Discount: • Adults: ¥1,800 • Children: ¥900 • Group Discounts: • 11–20 persons: ¥1,800 per adult • 21+ persons: ¥1,600 per adult • Schedule: 30-minute cruises departing hourly from 9:20 AM to 4:20 PM (the 4:20 PM departure operates from April to September). 🐬 Dolphin Watching Cruise (SeaCruise) • Standard Fare: • Adults: ¥5,500 • Junior High School Students: ¥4,500 • Elementary School Students: ¥3,500 • Infants: ¥2,500 • Online Reservation Discount: • Adults: ¥5,000 • Junior High School Students: ¥4,000 • Elementary School Students: ¥3,000 • Infants: ¥2,000 • Group Discounts: • 11–20 persons: ¥5,000 per adult • 21–30 persons: ¥4,800 per adult • 31–40 persons: ¥4,500 per adult • 41+ persons: ¥4,300 per adult • Additional Discounts: • Special rates available for guests using the Amakusa Takarajima Line ferry or staying at affiliated accommodations. 🐟 Sea Donut Aquarium (Amakusa Pearl Garden) • Admission Fee: Approximately ¥1,400 (based on exchange rates; exact yen price may vary).

Sight seeing via a small 30 minutes cruise ship was a wonderful experience. The price of ship ticket was 1600¥ per person. Yet the beautiful islands you see and the beautiful bridges above you will make you forget the cost of the ticket. You can enjoy various food in the restaurant but a bit costlier than what you find in kumamoto city. You can also buy fresh sea food in the supermarket nearby. And if you are fond of sleeping outdoors in your car there is also a free parking area nearby. Recommended place to visit if u are in kumamoto.

Amakusa Tenku no Fune is an elegant hot spring hotel located in Kami Amakusa, Kumamoto. The upscale accommodation offers chic rooms with stunning sea views, Italian dining, a spa, and an infinity pool. Guests can enjoy the luxury of free private parking and access to a hot spring bath. The hotel provides a premium experience with spacious and modern rooms, in-room spa facilities, and impeccable service.
Gorgeous hotel. The whole experience is very premium and we felt like VIPs. They take you to your room in golf carts, but it didn't seem that necessary. The room is very big and spacious and new. The appliances are nice and the shower head is strong. We loved the in room spa - you need to wait 15 minutes to fill up half way, so prepare the spa in advance. Dinner was spectacular, the steak and pasta were the highlight. The fish dishes were overcooked. Breakfast was loved, even though the fish was overcooked The views from the hotel are better than most nearby scenic spots.

(Translated by Google) I rarely visit this area on my Japan itinerary, but I drove all the way from Kumamoto and found the scenery quite beautiful. As soon as we pulled into the hotel, three or four people greeted us with great respect. Entering the lobby, we were greeted by a seascape dotted with small islands, reminiscent of Matsushima, also known as Amakusa Matsushima Onsen. After checking in, a series of surprises began. Since we were staying in a villa, it was normal for the staff to carry our luggage. Then, the receptionist explained that due to the distance, each villa would be provided with a golf cart. My initial reaction was that golf carts would be everywhere, but that was unfounded. There are only three villas, and I've never experienced a hotel with a golf cart. We drove along the beautiful coast until we arrived at the villa complex. The next day, looking down from the hotel's vantage point, we realized the complex is located at the end of a small peninsula. The three villas all have stunning views and seclusion. The villa where my son and his family stayed was completely tucked away in the greenery, invisible even from above. Sitting in the living room, you can enjoy the ocean view and the scattered islands. The sunset can be enjoyed from the air-conditioned living room or on the outdoor porch, or even from the open-air bath. The refrigerator is stocked with drinks, even two cans of beer, but without the right side dishes, we skipped them. Dinner was Italian on the second floor of the lobby. The sea-facing seats looked comfortable. However, since we had a young child, we were given a private room. The adjacent room was equally noisy with children. Every dish was exquisite and delicious, but surprisingly, there was no children's menu. My grandson seemed hungry, and the waiter was unsure what to do. My son consulted the lobby staff and the kitchen staff, who prepared a simple pasta dish that was better than most I've ever had. Soaking in the open-air bath in the evening, with the scattered lights of the islands in the distance, was incredibly relaxing. In the morning, we took another dip and noticed what looked like oyster cradles on the surface of the sea as a small boat glided pasta. I think this is where pearls are farmed. The name of the hotel, Tenku No Fune, is a bit peculiar. After reading the description, I learned that the hotel lobby is designed to resemble a luxury cruise ship sailing through the sky. Our villa offers a perfect photo opportunity for capturing this image. Overall, the experience was undoubtedly one of the most comfortable and relaxing onsen ryokans I've ever stayed in. There's also a small anecdote surrounding the name of the hotel, Tenku No Fune. Someone asked, "Why would a hotel be named No Fun?"

Seafood restaurant
Fukushin is a well-established name in the culinary scene of Amakusa, having opened its doors as a Japanese-style restaurant back in 1988. Over the years, this seafood haven has expanded to five locations, showcasing the freshest local catches that define the region's rich maritime heritage. In 2016, Fukushin took a significant step by launching its first sushi restaurant, fulfilling a long-held aspiration.
One of the best sea food restaurant in Kamiamakusa, with beautiful views of blue ocean. I have been there 2 times and found it to be pretty busy, people were all waiting. But the long waiting is worth. They serve really high quality seafoods and if you are lucky enough to get a seat by the large window that will make an experience. Go there and enjoy fresh sea food while looking at deep blue ocean.

I visited this place on a Sunday afternoon, and it was quite busy, so there was a wait in line. However, the wait was only around 30 to 45 minutes before we were seated. The staff arranged a comfortable booth for us with a large window overlooking the beautiful scenery outside. The environment was cozy, and the food tasted excellent. The service was also friendly and attentive. It's definitely worth a visit.

We were relegated to a room with no windows which was a shame since we were 8th in line and they sure had what looked like plenty of tables with along the big window side. The food was super fresh so there is that. Tasty too. But my very expensive ebi tempura bowl is supposed to come with an egg. They said sorry, eggs are too expensive these days, is it okay if give you an extra vegetable... I mean.... We are talking like 20 yen more for an egg. And they gave a 1/4 of an okra instead. Also, and this really irks me at a lot of restaurants. My wife and father in law are served instantly. My mother in law and I are sitting there waiting and waiting. Just serve everyone at once! We had hot food. They had cold food. Fix the hot food first. Then plate around the same time. I excuse for serving half the party a full 10 minutes apart. Last gripe. We all left hungry. The portions were a touch on the small side. Honestly I would give this place a 3.5 stars. The food was good and fresh. And they were fast. But that's about it.

Very fresh sashimi platter with a good variety and quality. A memorable and enjoyable lunch even though we had to wait a short while for a table.
