Tono in 3 days

If you only have 3 days to spend in Tono, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Tono is known as one of Japan’s great “folklore towns,” famous for the kappa and spirit stories recorded in the classic work *Tono Monogatari*. Visitors can explore traditional farmhouses and rural scenery at sites like Tono Furusato Village and the Tono City Folklore Museum. The area offers peaceful countryside landscapes, rice fields, and low mountains suited to relaxed walks and cycling. Local festivals and regional foods, including dishes featuring Iwate produce, give a glimpse of everyday life in Japan’s northeast.
With favorites like Tsuzukiishi, Sukawa Kogen, and Roadside Station Tono Kaze-no-oka, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Itoke and Hosuke so you can get the best taste of Tono while you’re here. (Translated by Google) If someone asked me if I'd visit again if I was in the area, I would... However, I didn't feel like it was a particularly distinctive roadside station. It has a good balance of agricultural products, souvenirs, and restaurants, so I think it's worth stopping by if you're sightseeing in the area. Perhaps because it's still new, the facilities are clean and easy to use.

(Translated by Google) We left our accommodation in Morioka by car at 7:15am. Driving on public roads, we arrived here at 8:45am and took a toilet break. The parking lot is very large and can probably accommodate 100 cars. It was really cold when we got out of the car. It was only natural, with the temperature being 1.5°C. When we went into the toilet, we were impressed by how clean it was. We couldn't help but take a photo. There was also a windmill on the facility. Judging from the name, it must be a windy place. It was morning so the facility was closed, which was a shame, but we were very happy to be able to use the clean toilets. Unetori Shrine, a diminutive sanctuary nestled amidst desolate surroundings, is an authentic place of devotion that eludes casual detection. Encircled by seven towering cedar trees and adorned with a majestic Sakura tree hosting the budding presence of a baby momiji (maple), this serene abode exudes an unparalleled sense of tranquility.
A very very small shrine. At close distance to the middle of nowhere, and not easy to spot, this place is a genuine prayer shrine. In a circle of 7 really tall cedar trees, and with a huge Sakura on a branch of which a baby momiji (maple) has started to grow, it feels super relax. People come there to write prayers on red bits of cloth that they tie to wooden building and to the tree branches around. There's no mark to separate the shrine from the surrounding private garden. Highly recommended for the romantic and magic atmosphere.

(Translated by Google) I visited on May 5, 2025 using Tono Kotsu's sightseeing taxi. I heard from a taxi driver that if you tie a red cloth with your left hand, your wish will come true, so my partner tried it. I was curious about this and looked it up later, and it turns out that people write their wishes with their non-dominant hand and tie the knot with their non-dominant hand. Was it really correct for my left-handed partner to write with his right hand and tie the words with his left? I don't know much about it, but it was an interesting experience. Near the entrance to Shinsato Atago Shrine, you can see the row of torii gates at Ushitomi-no-Myoujin. In chapter 35 of Yanagita Kunio's Tono Monogatari Supplement, it is said that this area once housed a large pond where the Lord of the Abyss resided. Prayers to the Lord of the Abyss for marriage would be granted. Through the torii gates, you can see a large area of red cloth hanging from ropes and branches. Tono Castle Shitamachi Museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich history of the Tono region, showcasing an array of artifacts from Japan's samurai era. Visitors can admire impressive displays of armor, helmets, swords, and everyday items used by samurai families. Although it's a compact museum that can be explored in about 15 to 30 minutes, it is packed with intriguing exhibits that highlight the area's heritage as a former castle town.
(Translated by Google) It seems that you can enter the museum with an admission ticket to Too's Story Hall, but as of September 13, 2023, you cannot enter because reservations must be made at least three days in advance of the desired date. When visiting, you will probably need to contact Toono Monogatari no Yakata. Revisited on December 6, 2023. I made a reservation over the phone to Tono Monogatari no Yakata, and when I asked about the reservation time, the staff member who came before the reservation time accepted the reservation. Although the number of exhibits is small and can be viewed in less than 10 minutes, the explanations about the exhibits were interesting as they detailed the Tono Nanbu family and the environment of the common people at the time. There was a notice saying that reservations must be made two days in advance. Although I underestimated the size of the store, there were clothes, military equipment, and daily necessities on display that I could tell at a glance. However, it is a pity that the number is rather small. Maybe the Tono Nanbu family doesn't offer many treasures? Also on display are tools used in merchant houses. Tono City Museum offers an immersive experience into the history, culture, and life of Tono from ancient mythology to modern times. The museum features models, dioramas, and a theater room where visitors can watch 'Tono Monogatari.' The facility is designed to engage visitors of all ages with its visual and auditory displays. Additionally, the museum occasionally hosts special exhibitions such as the Tono Monogatari picture book exhibition.
Start here on your Tono visit. This museum is a comprehensive coverage of the Tono City prefecture. There is an easy to use audio/video guide in multiple languages included in admission 320 yen. (Translated by Google) As the reviews suggest, the museum is small but packed with content, and the exhibits unique to Tono were very interesting. I'm glad I visited. The world of "The Tales of Tono" is introduced through videos, dioramas, and actual artifacts. The large screen offers a realistic view, and I would have liked to see it all if I had the time (it took about an hour). Inspired by the Tales of Tono, you can see statues that were enshrined in actual homes and objects thought to have become zashiki-warashi. While eerie at first glance, they really sparked my imagination. When you think of life in Tono, horses come to mind, and there are many exhibits featuring them. The exhibition of illustrations by famous manga artists is amazing! It was great to be able to see Shigeru Mizuki, Monkey Punch's kappa, Takao Saito's cute zashiki-warashi, and Machiko Satonaka's works up close. You're allowed to take photos, but you can't upload them to social media. Nestled in the serene hills southeast of Tonos, Gohyaku Rakan is a captivating site that showcases over 380 stone carvings of the Buddha's 500 disciples, known as Arhats. These remarkable etchings were created more than two centuries ago to honor and pacify the spirits of villagers who perished during a famine. The journey to this hidden gem involves navigating steep mountain roads, so sturdy footwear is highly recommended for an enjoyable trek.
(Translated by Google) Although it was Sunday, I visited early, around 9:30 a.m., so there was no one there. It's hard to find the location, but if you go up the road between Atago Shrine and Ukotori Shrine, you'll see a series of signposts, so it might be easier to find. There is a highway in the middle, and the entrance is immediately after crossing it. Proceed while watching the bear warning sign. There doesn't seem to be any animal trails. It is slippery due to moss and dew. After 3 minutes of climbing, you will see two small cylindrical artifacts on your left. chair? That chair is a landmark. There are moss-covered rocks rolling around on the right side, and each one is a Buddha? It is engraved! It looks like negative ions are coming out, and the atmosphere is perfect! The heart is revealed. As you climb up while looking for it, you'll find a shrine made of rocks and an offering box, which seems to be the end of the story. It's carved into the rock, but since it's in the open, it will probably disappear in a few decades. It's worth seeing, so you might want to include it in your Tono sightseeing itinerary.

This place isn't easy to figure out how to get to so let me explain. Go to Unedori Daimyojin shrine (the one with all the red cloth hung on the tree). When facing the shrine from the main road, there will be an unsealed road going up a hill to the right (see picture attached). You'll know you're on the right path because there is a sign post at the start and a sign warning about bears a bit further up. Follow this to the top and if you take a left you'll see a foot bridge across the highway. Cross this bridge and you're at the entrance. Should only take 5-10 min. DO NOT follow google maps if you're walking or cycling, it'll give a very convoluted route. I would recommend parking your bike at the bottom and walking up this way if you have one. The location itself is a bit hard to tell where the rocks are because they're covered with moss, but actually it's less than 5 min from the entrance. Don't go any further once you reach a wooden sign, there's nothing beyond that point.

Please be advised you can access this site easily from Unedori Shrine - just up a steep incline next to stairs to Atago shrine or you can go up the stairs to the Atago Shrine. Either way you cross a foot bridge over the freelway and ascend into the hills. (This is much better than 2km walk from castle grounds mostly downhill and past movement activated bear discouragers) Car access is available.

(Translated by Google) I thought there was an area where large and small moss-covered rocks were casually lying around, but it turned out to be Gohyaku Rahat. I was imagining the other famous 500 Arhats lined up in an orderly manner, so at first I couldn't identify them and looked around, wondering if this place was different, so I ended up walking down a strange mountain path. I think this is a good idea, but it's far from the main tourist route and requires careful driving along a narrow forest road, which feels more time-consuming than the distance. A high speed passes in front of me, and it lacks the Tono style. I didn't think it was something worth forcing myself to do.

(Translated by Google) I went when it was still a little cold. There was nothing around, and the silence was very unsettling. More than 250 years ago, this area suffered a great famine (it is said that over 60,000 people died of starvation or disease, and over 20,000 horses died throughout the Nanbu domain), resulting in many casualties. The individual moss-covered stones (Arhat statues) were carved as a memorial for those killed, and they were very impressive. I ventured a little further in, but the "Beware of Bears" sign made me even more frightened, so I quickly retreated. Tsuzukiishi

4.2
(167)
Historical landmark
Nestled among fragrant cedar trees, Tsuzukiishi is a mysterious rock formation that may be a natural occurrence or an ancient dolmen. A challenging 500-meter hike leads to the site, where two massive stones rest atop each other, with intriguing chisel marks on some of the lower megaliths. Accessible from a small parking lot off National Route 396, reaching Tsuzukiishi involves a steep ascent and navigating narrow paths with exposed tree roots.
(Translated by Google) This is the place that appears in episode 91 of Tono Monogatari. There is a parking lot on the right side of R396, 10 km from Tono Station towards Hanamaki. The landmark is the gazebo with a reddish-brown roof and the restroom. Please be aware that if you are distracted by the nearby sign that says ``Nanbu Magariya Chibaya'' parking lot, you may accidentally pass by. It's a curved section, so it's difficult to make a U-turn. There are a lot of wooden canes in the arbor, so it might be a good idea to use them. As the warning at the entrance says, the road is rough until the halfway point. The middle of the road has been carved out by the force of the rain, so you will have to step over it. The path is well-maintained, so it's easy to climb if you're careful, but sneakers are probably a good idea. Even my feet reached the stone in about 10 minutes. There's also a bear warning sign, so if you're concerned about it, be sure to bring a bear bell. Since there was no one around, I was able to soak up the solemn atmosphere of Yamajinja Shrine and Tsuzuki Stone. If you have time, this is a place you should definitely stop by.

(Translated by Google) It's in a very difficult place to understand. I headed there using my car's navigation system, but I found a rock that looked like it along the national highway and stopped. I thought it was smaller than I expected, but it turned out to be an information board and a mock stone. There is a promenade leading from the top of the simulated stone, but I couldn't find it because it looked like ``Isn't this a place where people don't belong?'' Moved by car again. A little further along, I managed to find a sign that said ``Zokuishi Tourist Parking Lot'' and stopped. Please be careful as you can only park a few cars and it is narrow. Look at the information board and choose the shortest path with the steepest incline to climb the mountain. You can climb the mountain wearing a skirt, but sandals are not recommended. As you climb up the mountain path that not many people take, you will come across ``Fudo Rock'' (a rock so large that you can't move it!) and ``Nakiiwa'' (a gigantic rock standing there), and finally you will come across ``Zoku Ishi''. There are many legends about this stone, including that Benkei scratched it, that it was an ancient grave, and that Benkei lifted it and made it. It's really strange when you get closer. It is perfectly balanced and has rocks on it. ``I wish I could advertise it more,'' I thought to myself, ``Isn't this no-man's land?'' I landed on the spot where I had just thought. Soba noodles are homemade and the tempura is fresh and delicious. I had the"salad soba". It was definitely a new way of eating soba for me. Visitors can enjoy the refreshing atmosphere of the clear stream and even try their hand at fishing for kappa using cucumbers tied to fishing poles, provided they have obtained a kappa fishing license from designated locations.
Pretty interesting place. Birthplace of the legend of the kappa, one of Japan's most popular monsters. You are encouraged to buy a permit to catch them at the Lore-in and fish with cucumbers.

Totally disappointed. We had a long drive to see this place and while the nearby exhibition is worthy a visit this stream is a total letdown

Dial down your expectations and focus on the Kawaii (cute). You access the pool passing through the temple grounds - keep an eye out for kappa adorning the railings. 🥒 everywhere ! Denshoen and here will keep you occupied for 90 mins and both worth a look. If you have rented a bicycle this is one end of the path.

It was not the place to drive to visit and to see the site to be honest. I understand that the Kappa is a monster in the folklore story, but the presentation of Kappa story was poor for me. In the Tōno city itself was not attractive for me.

That was just a creek but I am glad that we went there since Kappa is childhood imaginary creature and interesting to see the place where that fairytale started. Azuki ice cream we had was amazing.

Went to Kappa Pool - not much signage for where you can park your bikes, but a nice, cool, relaxing place to visit that also highlights Tono's folklore.

It closes at 4pm with a gate at the entrance saying no access. We had travelled quite far and were interested to see this place so it was a disappointment to find that it closed so early. It just looked like a regular inaka temple so I wonder why they choose to prevent people from entering. Anyway, I suppose we should have checked more thoroughly before going but lesson learnt. I wonder if the kappa was there that day?

Kappabuchi is a must on the Tono tourist trail. It is a remarkably creepy little grove, and easy to get to following signs out of Tono town centre. However, it should be said that there is not alot to actually DO here. It's more about soaking up the atmosphere. "Yokai" hunters will enjoy it, but maybe it's a bit boring for children.

Buddhist temple
Jokenji Temple is located near Kappa-buchi Pool, where the mythical creatures known as kappa are said to reside. The Tono's kappa, called Aka Kappa, is believed to be red in color due to the severe cold of the area. The temple precincts also feature a statue of Nio and a kappa guardian dog. Nearby attractions include Denshoen Garden and Tono's specialty hop fields, making it an ideal place for a leisurely stroll and exploration.

(Translated by Google) Tono Trip ② This is a record of a spring trip I took. I traveled to places associated with Yanagita Kunio's "Tono Monogatari." My next destination was Jokenji Temple, famous for its Kappa Pool. This ancient Soto Zen temple was founded in 1490. The stream behind the temple grounds is called "Kappa Pool" and is said to have once been home to many kappa. Apparently, a kappa living there helped put out a fire at Jokenji Temple, leading the grateful head priest to enshrine kappa guardian dogs. Sure enough, next to the hall on the approach to the temple, there's a kappa guardian dog with a plate on its head. But what exactly are kappa? I sometimes wonder if they were not treated as human beings at the time. There are many folk tales with specific stories. At Kappa Pool, you can even try fishing for kappa by dangling a cucumber from a bamboo pole. It's a great photo spot. Although it's a small temple with a quiet atmosphere, this photo spot is popular and bustling with bus tour guests. Although it's a temple, there are still vestiges of Shinto-Buddhist syncretism, such as the presence of guardian lion dogs. The lion dog guarding the hall was a unicorn. This charming site features the historic Kikuchi family residence, recognized as a nationally significant cultural property, alongside the memorial hall dedicated to Kizen Sasaki, famed for narrating 'Tono Monogatari.' Not too far from the city center, actually conveniently located very close to kappabuchi, another point of interest and low-priced place. You can see traditional houses from the area with thatch roofs, live silkworms, experience some silk processing steps, and see the creepy shrine to Oshira-sama with hundreds of dolls covering the walls up to the ceiling in a room with no windows. It's a kind of more condensed furusato-mura. Nice to visit once.

(Translated by Google) It is said that in Tono, old people over 60 years old were taken here to ``Dendera Field'' to talk less. However, rather than waiting for their lives to end, the elderly people who were brought there apparently lived here together, plowing nearby fields during the day, and returning in the evening. Going out from the Dendera field to the fields was called "hakadachi," and returning from the fields was called "hakaagari." Rather than being abandoned, does it feel like a new life is starting? I was surprised to see that this place is very close to the village and close enough to go back home. But it's the village law, so I can't go back. It was probably a sad but necessary wisdom to keep his precious descendants alive in a time when famines were frequent. It's said that in the past, people who turned 60 would gather in this area and live communally. Those who were healthy would commute to the village from here to do farm work or other tasks. While many people in their 60s are still working these days, back in the day, they were sent to the "Obasuteyama" (a place where old women were abandoned). The reconstructed buildings have been cleaned, so it's safe to enter. I wonder if people really lived in these buildings, which resemble Jomon-period dwellings (with unsunk floors). It looks like they'd be crushed by snow... Since it's on high ground and there's no risk of flooding, it's likely that these days they'd be sold off as houses. It's quite spacious, so I imagine a decent number of people lived there. This is a collection of folk tales published in 1910 by the folklorist Kunio Yanagida, which was compiled from folk tales he had heard from Kizen Sasaki, a native of Tono. It consists of a total of 119 short and medium stories, and is characterized by its strong mysterious atmosphere. There are legends all over the place called ``Mt. Ubagase.'' It is said that the ``old man who could no longer work'' was abandoned in ``the mountains'' in order to reduce his income. This is called abandonment or senicide. It seems that here in Tono, there was a custom of abandoning the elderly in the distant past, and in episode 111, ``There is a place called Denderano. In the past, all the old people over 60 were driven to this lotus place.'' There is a description that says, ``Learning follows...'' In other words, during times when the food situation was poor, elderly people whose productivity had declined were abandoned in the mountains in order to ``feed less.'' It's scary. However, there is no record of ``retirement'' in Japan's official literature, and it seems that it remains in the category of folklore. First, the Tokugawa shogunate had adopted Neo-Confucianism, which valued hierarchical relationships. You wouldn't have done that to an old man, don't worry. But isn't there something wrong with the retirement system? Nowadays, there is no philosophy in the government, and this is scary. As usually with Hachimangu shrines, very big and solid buildings, with strong red and white colors. This one seems quite well maintained. The main building itself isn't especially remarkable for a shrine, and its simple metal roof is far from the beautiful black tiles roofs of other Tono religious places, but the surroundings are amazing. With a superb alley of cedar trees crossed by a long and open lawn, it's a dream for nature and picnic lovers. They also have a super long bridge going from the reception all the way to the main building. Pine trees, momiji and Sakura are also sprinkled around.

In 1189, Minamoto no Yoritomo granted Tono-go to Azenuma Hirotsuna for his meritorious service in suppressing the Hiraizumi Fujiwara clan. Azenuma Hirotsuna dispatched Ufukata Hirofusa to build a palace in Matsuzaki Village and enshrine Hachiman-gō. Azenuma Hirotsuna later built Yokota Castle and erected Hachiman-gō Shrine at the castle's gate. In 1600, Tono became the domain of the Nanbu clan, and in 1661, Hachinohe Tadayoshi relocated the shrine to its current location. It's a distance from the station; you can take a bus and get off at the "Hachiman-jinja-mae" stop. The water outlet at the Sailor's House is not the usual dragon, but a kappa, a truly charming sight. The grounds are spacious, and there is a large horse riding ground on the premises, so the view is open and the feeling of openness is amazing. Everything is well-maintained, clean, and comfortable. Tono Furusato Village is a preserved folk village that offers a glimpse into Japan's old lifestyle and its deep connection to nature and faith. The village consists of old Japanese farmhouses surrounded by beautiful trees, each attended by knowledgeable staff ready to provide hands-on experiences and assistance. Visitors can explore the interiors of these traditional houses, each uniquely adorned with different charming displays.
A cute open air museum where you can walk through a bunch of traditional Japanese houses. On our visit we got to to even see some horses! Definitely worth a stop and especially if you have kids, they had so much fun running around.

I had such a fun time here! It's basically a bunch of old Japanese farmhouses that they gathered into one place surrounded by beautiful trees and nature. However, each house had a person attending it, stoking the fires and willing to help you out if there was any hands-on experience you could try. The interiors also had different traditional items on display so even if each house seemed similar they all had their different charm, making each one worth popping into. My favorite were the ones that had the horses in them too. It's one thing to hear and read about how the people used to share their homes with horses but it was so special to be able to see actual horses and get a better feel for what it may have been like back when people actually lived there. In the entrance there is a restaurant, gift shop, and some bathrooms. While there are provisions available to make the entrance house wheelchair accessible, once you get into the park itself it is nothing but uneven dirt/gravel paths and and steep steps to get into the houses.
Chris T — Google review
A cool open air village that displays the moving condition. There was also a little exhibition. Unfortunately the opening times on Google were not correct so we had to really rush through it all.
Siemon S — Google review
The recreated village has a lot of traditional L shaped houses typical of this area. These houses housed both the horses and the humans under the same roof, which shows how important the horses were to the lives of people living in this area during the Edo period. If you plan to visit other sites in Tono, make sure you ask for the combined discount tickets. These will save you a few hundred yen. We were not pleased that the site had an unscheduled closure - the staff at the park told me that they had announced this on their website but when I went on their website, I could see that the closure had been announced but only three days prior to the closure date. Hardly an advanced notice considering that most people plan their trips months in ahead, especially when visiting a remote town like Tono where it is difficult to book a reasonably priced quality accommodation! If you are short of time, skip this place and visit Densho-en instead, it is closer to the town centre and it has everything Tono Furusato Village has albeit at a much smaller scale.

Tono Furusato Village is difficult to go to, but offers you the traditional view of rural Japan. It is a beautiful place, but pity it is so far away.
Hisanori T — Google review
Basically it's old traditional Japanese houses with thatch roofs. The problem is that it's about the same building, 6 or 7 times. Some have a horse or a poney inside. That's all. The houses are big and beautiful, but they are just spread in a wide area, so you spend time walking between them. Now here is the thing, you can see exactly the same house closer to Tono and for cheaper at tenshouen. On top of that, tenshouen has more interesting stuff to show, like a better and condensed version of the furusato village. At the end of the village, close to the shine, there is a small barn with big wooden phallic statues, that can be surprising when you discover them without an explanation. Be careful if you are with kids. So, I'd say not worth the time.

Mount Hayachine, the highest peak in the Kitakami mountain range, is a stunning natural wonder known for its striking alpine flora and breathtaking panoramic views. This majestic mountain is home to a variety of rare alpine flowers and vibrant autumn colors, making it a popular destination for nature enthusiasts. The area surrounding Mount Hayachine was designated as a Quasi-National Park in 1982, highlighting its exceptional natural beauty.
I hiked Hayachine on Sep 8, 2019 from Kawaranobo. I am posting my experience and some suggestions below with lots of photos. Hope this will be helpful since I could’t find most recent information. I was planning to start from Kawaranobo and return from the Odagoe. However I learned that this trail was closed two years ago because of landslides when I arrived there. It wasn’t written on any website I had a look in English. Anyways this is the closest parking available location so I start walking to the Odagoe trailhead which is about 45 min further along the road. At the Kawaranobo there is a information center, bathrooms etc. I just started walking and noticed that a car stopped and took me to the trailhead. Thanks to this guy who is one of the people who are in charge of these facilities I dind’t have to walk this distance. There is a bus stop at Odagoe but I think the season was over. Check the timetable in advance. There is no hut or bathrooms on the way. You can buy a special bag for toilet at the information center. The suggested time from Odagoe is 2:20 and descending is 2:05. But I could make the summit in 1:25 and came back in one hour. Take your time and enjoy beautiful flowers. It is very rocky so make sure you have suitable shoes. Better to have gloves since you sometimes need to hold the rocks to climb. The total altitude change is 867 and summit is 1917 m. Although it wasn’t rainy or cold the clouds and wind blocked the view. The best season is from second half of June to mid of July. Today tora no o change color into red and it was amazing. There were some other flowers as well check the photos. People I met on the way were very helpful and kind. Some ladies shared home made mochi. Overall it was a great experience. Hope to visit here in June next year. Side notes: there is another trailhead just across the Odagoe. It is going to the peak of the mountain in front of the Mt. Hayachine. It was written 1.5 km to the summit. I was about to try since Hayachine was very quick :))

The alpine flowers—especially Miyama Akebonosou—were blooming beautifully! 🌸⛰️ Although the rocky paths were quite slippery and challenging, I was completely soothed by the stunning scenery and delicate blossoms. 🌿✨ The refreshing scent of pine trees along the trail made the experience even more magical 🌲💚 A perfect hike that awakened all five senses!

(Translated by Google) (November 4, 2025) I went there the day before Prefectural Route 25 closed for the winter (it will remain closed until May of the following year). From the Kawaranobo parking lot, it's a 30-minute walk along the side of the road, gaining 200 meters in elevation. From the Odagoe trailhead, the elevation difference is 650 meters to the summit. There are almost no ups and downs. After a 30-minute climb through the forest from the Odagoe trailhead, you reach the tree line, which marks the start of your first trail. Because it was a clear day, Mount Yakushi spread out to the south, and Mount Kurikoma was always visible to the southwest. The climb, which felt like walking over boulders, continued for 90 minutes. Because it was a clear, windless day, the ice wasn't too severe, so I didn't need to use chain spikes, but it's a good idea to bring them from late October onwards. Once you reach the Kengamine junction, it's a parallel path to the summit. Incidentally, I had read in advance that Kengamine is a bear spot, so I didn't go there. If you go a little further west from Okumiya Shrine on the summit, you'll come to an observation point where you can get a clear view of Mt. Iwate. You should be able to see the Pacific Ocean to the east, but the boundary between it and thin clouds wasn't clear. However, behind Kengamine, you could clearly see the area where the sea merges into the land. I think this is probably Miyako Bay. (Original) (2025.11.4.)

(Translated by Google) Unfortunately, it was cloudy on the day we climbed, but the view from the summit was still spectacular! It took 2 hours and 30 minutes to climb and 2 hours to descend. Bears are scary at this time of year, so I recommend ringing a bear bell! As of October 11th, the leaves had not yet turned red. If you want to see the autumn leaves, I recommend coming around the end of the month! The temperature at the summit was 4°C, so it was very cold! I recommend dressing warmly!

The view is also great, and you can climb the rocky mountain while admiring the flowers. It is a unique and famous peak that is unlike any other. Nature preserve
Nestled in Ichinoseki, Sukawa Kogen is a stunning plateau located partway up the majestic Mt. Kurikoma. This unique destination boasts an extraordinary volcanic landscape characterized by serene lakes, lush marshes, and vibrant wetlands teeming with alpine flora. Visitors can also indulge in the area's hot springs, known for their strong acidity and reputed benefits for gastrointestinal ailments and skin conditions.
(Translated by Google) I went on October 6th. The parking lot is full regardless of weekdays. The autumn leaves near the hot springs were almost at their peak. By the way, I have also included an image of the first fork in the road, which is easy to make a mistake when going for the first time. The correct answer is to proceed in the direction of "steam bath". If you turn right, you will return to the parking lot. They were selling salt-grilled char (500 yen). It was delicious. There was a restaurant and a hot spring, so it was a very nice place.

(Translated by Google) Late June 2023 I stayed for a few nights, but it was sunny for two days and I enjoyed walking along the mountain path. You can see Mt. Chokai in the distance from the open-air bath at Kurikoma Sanso and the mountain path. The strongly acidic Myoban-Izumi Ryoban-Izumi hot water is quite rare and I felt very comfortable. (Translated by Google) I went to see the autumn leaves on October 10th. I was told that it would be crowded during the season, so I made the correct decision to schedule to arrive at the parking lot at 8am. By 10 o'clock it was almost full. The mountains were bright and beautiful at their peak.

(Translated by Google) I went there on May 31st. The fresh greenery was beautiful, and the magnolias, Iwakagami, and Skunk cabbage were still blooming. On the 28th, some roads around Kurikoma (closed in winter) were lifted.
