Mae Hong Son in 2 days

If you only have 2 days to spend in Mae Hong Son, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Mae Hong Son offers dramatic mountain landscapes, mist-covered valleys, and winding roads that appeal to travelers seeking a quieter, less-developed side of northern Thailand. The town is known for its distinctive Burmese-influenced temples, such as hilltop Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu with its panoramic views. Nearby villages and nature reserves provide opportunities for trekking, visiting ethnic minority communities, and exploring caves and waterfalls. The slower pace and cooler climate make it a relaxing contrast to Thailand’s larger cities and beach destinations.
With favorites like Pai Canyon, Wat Phra That Si Chom Thong Worawihan, and Thung Bua Tong Fields at Doi Mae U Kho, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Karsa Long Thai Food and Ci Xin Jai so you can get the best taste of Mae Hong Son while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Canyons
Pai Canyon, also known as Kong Lan, is a must-visit destination in Pai. It offers narrow hiking trails with sweeping valley views and is often ambitiously referred to as The Grand Canyon of Thailand. Some notable attractions nearby include the Chinese Village (Santichon), Wat Klang, Chedi Phra That Mae Yen, The Land Split, and WWII Memorial Bridge.
We loved it! If you like climbing hard surfaces and thrilling activities, you’re gonna love it too! Entrance is 10 baht per person for maintenance purposes. You have to walk up the stairs for 3-5 mins till you reach the top, and from then onwards several trails go into different directions and you can choose to go onto any of them. The views were insane and the air was refreshing. Our clothes got soiled trying to pass some of the openings, so keep that in mind. It was sometimes windy but also very hot, so I would recommend wearing sunscreen/cap/hat and carrying a water bottle. If you want to hike up the challenging trails, hiking shoes are a must! I really enjoyed the two hours we spent here. Gazing at the chasm below, the greenery around, the mountains at a distance, the valleys with a house here and there, and soaking up the vastness of the place was a healing experience. Pictures don’t do justice to the views we got. However, some parts of the trail was highly risky and there’s no safety gear for assistance. There’s also no one around to ask for help so I’m unsure about what would happen if an accident were to take place.
Tahmina B — Google review
Entry is free but maintenance is 10 baht. Once you enter the place, you have three routes to take. The one on the left is your path if you are adventurous. Also, people usually spend 20 minutes here, mostly near the gazebo. But if you cover all three routes it takes a minimum of 1 hour. And the place is very scenic dotted with views and trees everywhere. Go in the morning and relax there till afternoon. Highly recommended.
Madhava P — Google review
Super cool spot, you can easily get there bye going to pai walking street and paying 100 baht at pretty much any taxi stand and they will take you and pick you up. It was beautiful at sunset; super easy to get to, there is a lot to “hike “ if you want to, but if you don’t want to it’s about a 4 minutes uphill walk and then you’re there. I recommend hiking to the other side and going through the little crevices that are naturally formed. Super good thing to do while in pai.
Cooper G — Google review
What a great experience, it’s free even to park your bike/scooter. There are easily lots of ways to enjoy the canyon regardless of the experience you’re looking for, but it will depend on your fitness and strength, fear of heights etc. If this was back in the UK it would be fenced off 🤣. People say to go at sunrise or sunset but we went in the middle of the day, and yes it was very hot, but not very busy. In this type of situation we would always choose the extreme heat over the crowds. Good foot ware is advisable and avoid if it’s been raining. Highly recommend.
Martin — Google review
Short walk up from the parking area until you reach the canyon. It’s very picturesque and unique to see so would highly recommend, entry was 1 baht and toilets are 5 baht. Would recommend wearing sturdy shoes as it can be quite slippy on some of the sandy bits.
Katie C — Google review
The place is beautiful and perfect for watching the sunset. Arrive about 15–20 minutes early — there’s a short and easy climb to the top of the hill. The only downside is the safety along the walking path. Some parts are not well protected, and a small slip could end very badly. I really hope the local authorities will improve it soon. At the parking area, you can find small food stalls with tasty local snacks at very reasonable prices.
Rave G — Google review
Well, it has a great view all around and that's basically it. I wouldn't call it a canyon it's a sandy hill. For anyone coming to see sunsets let me tell you - there are no sunsets in Pai.
Yuval R — Google review
Absolutely amazing landscape, even though the sunset was not visible due to clouds, it was an awesome experience and much more adventurous than I had thought, but even with flip flops/barefoot easily doable.

Hot Springs & Geysers
Tha Pai Hot Spring is a popular destination located about 8 kilometers south of Pai town center and not far from Pai Canyon. The hot spring offers various pools with different temperatures, including a pool with warm water and another where the water is boiling hot. Visitors can enjoy the stunning view of the sun's rays shining through the steam in the early mornings. There are also shower and changing rooms available on-site.
An amazing place to chill, Water are super hot and separated to 4 different pools, with decreasing temperatures. The pools are much hotter then stated on the signs next to it, so try entering slowly and gradually. Overall great place and highly recommended for a visit. You can even hike a little to see the spring itself.
Niv G — Google review
Beautiful maintained hot springs. First you can walk upwards to the actual hot springs which are around 80 degrees and smell like bad eggs 🤭 Afterwards you can bath in very nicely arranged pools with different water temperatures ranging from 36 degrees to 32 degrees. There's a 300 baht fee for foreigners but I think it's adequate since they really took care of the place. I also would prefer this over the other hot springs (Siam Ngam) since there are more pools here. 🙏
Krbs — Google review
It’s actually very beautiful. Usual National Park Entrance Fee and a short walk, easy drive to get there. The water has clearly been channeled into the different levels (hottest at the top) and into the concrete pools. However, walking past these and up to the top to see the source of the water at the hot spring is well worth it, beautiful and steamy.
R2thebizel — Google review
Very nice water springs, has a range of water temperatures so you can work your way up to the hotter temperatures. We went in October and it was extremely quiet as it was low season so it was really enjoyable.
Rose H — Google review
Not the cheapest excursion in comparison to other activities nearby, buy really beautiful and relaxing. We arrived about 1600 when it was much quieter.
Kimjo L — Google review
Such a joy to be in the hot water. We brought food and. Eggs .we boiled the eggs in the hot water . Amazing
Lily — Google review
If your in Pai this is a great place to come and relax in the hot springs which are around 36 degree to swim in and they do have private baths as well. It’s also got a nice short nature walk. It is 300 Baht for overseas tourists to visit and cheaper for Thais. Definitely worth a visit. Yes there is parking and somewhere where you can buy drinks. But eat either before you come or after you leave. There is toilets and cold showers here as well. There is a mixture of hot and cold areas to swim
GREGORY E — Google review
Very beautiful paid hot springs. 300 baht for foreigners. I don’t really agree with paying to use nature, but the site is well maintained and there are showers and changing rooms on site, just be careful of snakes. Four cascading pools at varying temperatures between 28-38C degrees. The source at the top is 80C.

When traveling to the tea village, take a break at the Kho Ku So Bamboo Bridge. This long bamboo bridge and pathway connects Kung Mai Sak village with a nearby monastery and temple, allowing monks to cross the river Sa Nga and flooded rice paddies during the rainy season. The vibrant green landscape during and after the wet season makes for a beautiful walk.
Beautiful place to spend a morning or afternoon. We went early which meant it was not too busy. Great bridge to walk along - think there is a temple at the end but we didn’t reach that. 30 baht pp to enter with free public toilets and a few cafe options too. Good parking area for bikes too.
Katie C — Google review
We drove up here on a weekday with a rental car. I saw some people saying it was an easy drive, in my opinion it is not. But the bigger question is if it is worth the drive....it totally is. Very peaceful environment and a lot longer than I expected. If you are up for an adventure this is a good start
Maarten D — Google review
Beautiful and peaceful spot near Pai! The view here is absolutely stunning. The bamboo bridge stretches for about one kilometer across the rice fields, offering many great photo opportunities along the way. At the end of the walk, you’ll find a lovely temple, and there are a few shaded spots where you can stop to relax. I recommend visiting in the morning or late afternoon, as it can get quite hot during the day. There’s also a small shop at the entrance where you can buy cold drinks. The entrance fee is 30 THB for adults, and children enter for free.
Rave G — Google review
Such a lovely way to spend a few hours in Pai. The walk itself takes about 30 minutes and takes you past beautiful landscapes, swings, and photo opportunities. You can also do archery and shooting and win a small prize which was great entertainment during the walk. Would recommend to anyone in Pai.
Kyah G — Google review
One of the most beautiful places I have visited. Only 30 BHT entrance fee and for an additional 30 BHT you can shoot bow & arrow and some rubber ducks, where you can easily win a nice little bracelet. The place was absolutely incredible and the scenery was stunning, can only recommend. The way here is tuff tho, so if you’re on a scooter on your own it should not be your first ride.
Leon H — Google review
Amazing spot and would highly recommend visiting. 30 baht entry and lots to see and do, walks and few cafe options. We spent a lot of yoke at one cafe which amazing views and relaxing atmosphere! Loved this place
Max S — Google review
Great place! Try the Slow Coffee Bar, they have great coffee and Thai tea (the coffee place is in the middle of the bamboo bridge walk). All money is donated to the temple and the school around 🥹 nice people and very hospitable. Also free bananas.
‫ליאור B — Google review
Absolutely incredible spot! We were here in rainy season and I can definitely recommend, since it’s beautifully green as well as very quiet. There were maybe 4 other people on the bridge. They’ve got some cute cafes and restaurants surrounding the bridge, so you can hide there if it’s raining. Absolutely stunning.

Night market
Pai Walking Street, situated along Chaisongkran Road and the northern end of Rungsiyanon Road in Pai, Thailand, is a vibrant night market that comes alive after sunset. The street is adorned with colorful hanging lanterns and offers a wide variety of products such as clothing, accessories, postcards, jewelry, handicrafts, and original works of art by local artists.
Walking street is a peaceful ghost town during the day but at night it comes alive. The night market is open every night. In the off season I found it busier during the week than weekends. The vendors are friendly and chill —you might even find some drunken by the end of the night and give you a free meal (happened to me) Don’t forget to walk until the bamboo bridge and cross the river during sunset. It’s lovely. You can find good clothing deals and vegan, gluten free street foods too! My favorite stalls are the grilled pork lady, shampoo nachos, queens gyoza, Fah homemade chicken wrap, and fresh spring rolls! Yum. Oh! And the fried spicy squid stall on the corner (she also makes an excellent coconut smoothie !)
Brittany B — Google review
Great food, great vibes 💯 This night market, like all other night markets in Thailand offers an array of shops and stalls selling clothes, jewellery, food, drinks, and snacks. The snacks looked good and I wished I could try all of them. I’d suggest everyone to walk around the entire place and try as many street food as you can. There are several halal options. We had gyoza/dumplings from a halal stall and it was so delicious! I had to urgently buy some clothes and the shop I was in was about to close but they didn’t rush me and helped me every way they could. It was really touching. I think most clothing stores close by 10 pm. The place got quieter around 11:30 pm except for the loud parties going on in the bars.
Tahmina B — Google review
Pai Walking Street is truly one of the best experiences in Pai and should not be missed if you are visiting this small mountain town. Every evening the street comes alive with a vibrant atmosphere full of lights, music, and delicious smells from all directions. You can find everything here: from small bars with chilled vibes, restaurants serving both Thai and international dishes, to countless street food stalls offering tasty snacks and meals at very affordable prices. The variety of food is impressive. You can enjoy authentic Thai dishes, fresh smoothies, vegetarian and vegan options, and even Western treats if you are craving something different. Street musicians and performers create a lively soundtrack as you walk, adding to the charm of the night. The relaxed climate in Pai makes it comfortable to stroll for hours without feeling rushed. What I love most is the mix of people and energy. Locals, backpackers, and travelers from all over the world gather here, giving the street a friendly and international vibe while still keeping that small-town charm. Prices are reasonable, so you can eat, drink, shop for souvenirs, and enjoy live entertainment without spending too much. Overall, Pai Walking Street perfectly captures the laid-back yet lively spirit of Pai
Isuru J — Google review
25/October/2025 Visited this place after dinner. Weather was nice ~22°C. I spotted good varieties of stalls. Good vibes.
T G — Google review
A really nice walking street compared to the more chaotic ones, street vendors friendly and not too in your face and really good food! Strongly recommend the chips from the shawarma stand on the less busy end of the street, homemade sauce is to die for!!
Aaron B — Google review
Its the place to go if your new to Pai, especially if your young. We are older but still liked the vibe on the main street had and down some of the side streets. There is a distinct herby smell in the air and it's definitely not earl grey tea !!! 🤣🌿🌿 after all few drinks my wife and I had some intense games of connect 4, whilst listening to some Pink Floyd....walking cliché I know but it's all good in the hood.....🤘
Martin — Google review
There are many tasty foods, local show and souvenir. The cost isn't expensive. Something is cheaper than in the town. This street is always open every night. It's the best thing that I love. I'm Thai. I really love this walking street because it's easy to plan to come and it still contains convenient stores for normal life.

really cute accessory and clothing stalls, usually not overpriced but some places are. Most prices can be haggled a bit but they start off mostly fair. The food stalls are amazing, good prices and delicious! went here every night for snacks and sometimes dinner.

Yun Lai Viewpoint is a hilltop village complex near the Myanmar border in Pai, offering panoramic valley views and tea service. The area is known for its cultural diversity, with the Chinese Yunnan Cultural Village reflecting Yunnan influence and history of Chinese settlers fleeing the Mao Tse Tung revolution. Santichon village was built to address drug problems and has become an exotic tourist spot.
Visit date: 8-Jul-2025 Definitely the best sunrise spot in Pai overlooking the whole town area. 20 baht per entry. There was only 5 people when I visited on a Tuesday morning. It was a gloomy morning thus no sunrise but the sea of fog was amazing still! There's also a 'wishing tree for couples' and a fish pond (feel free to feed the fish, 10 baht for the fish feed).
Aurélien T — Google review
Nice viewpoint! It is on the top of a hill with a view overlooking the valley and town. There are some nice places to take photographs and you can buy some food and drink from the uncle taking care of the place. I went there in the evening and it was peaceful and quiet. Even saw a small snake swimming in the water. You need to pay to enter.
Collins — Google review
The viewpoint is a beautiful spot, even though we didn’t get to see the sunrise because of the clouds. The entrance fee is 20 THB per person. Inside, you can enjoy a nice cup of coffee or tea in a lovely, peaceful atmosphere. Definitely worth a stop!
Rave G — Google review
good view on the mountains surrounding yourself. the path to go with a scooter can be a bit challenging for beginners, the end is quite steep. tee is good. the entrance fee was 20 THB in July 2025. it's also romantic, you can write your names and put on the tree. Google about this Chinese village to know the history, or gemini. it's quite interesting.
Samuel P — Google review
Beautiful viewpoint, 20 baht per person but so worth it. Has a little shop, cafe and free toilets. Gives such a nice view of Pai so is worth the drive up.
Katie C — Google review
Just a very beautiful viewpoint. Not a lot to do and the restaurant is expensive. There are so many viewpoints in the area, not sure I can recommende about this one. Next to the viewpoint there's a flowers garden, with small entrance fee but we didn't have time to go.
Shy G — Google review
Good view point , but don’t visit at afternoons bcz the heat is too much. You can feed the fishes and hangout a bit there and enjoy the time. Approx 30 mins you can spend there. 20 baht entrance free was needed.

Up a steep road, but worth the effort. Great views and there is a Chinese village at the bottom of the road.

Karsa Long Thai Food is a charming little eatery that may not boast extravagant decor, but it certainly shines when it comes to flavor and value. Nestled in Pai, this restaurant offers an extensive menu filled with mouthwatering dishes at wallet-friendly prices. Whether you're craving a hearty massaman curry or fresh vegetarian options, Karsa Long has you covered.
Delicious, quality, big plate food. The owner came from Vietnam. You can meet many long term travelers

Great little restaurant with very reasonable prices. Had a chicken panaeng curry which was delicious. The khao soi that my husband ordered was a bit bland, but overall had a nice dinner. The Avocado salad is amazing! One of the best salads I’ve had in a really long time
Marisa F — Google review
I didn't like this place. I ordered Tom yum and it was liquid poor soup with lots of carrot. Probably the worst Tom yum I have ever tried in Thailand. Maybe other dishes are good, I saw they have lots of western options, but Tom yum I definitely a big big no (see the picture attached)
Iryna — Google review
This was my go to. Excellent Thai food for my month in Pai. The owners are very friendly and it’s a good price. I will miss it very much! Thankyou

We ate here twice in Pai. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Everything is very fresh, reminds me of farm to table, was some of the best green curry and rice(with wild rice) I've had in all of Thailand. Food portions are HUGE, not that expensive, definitely get your $$ worth. The next time we are in Pai we will be eating here again and again.

Restaurant
Ci Xin Jai is a budget-friendly Thai/Chinese fusion buffet restaurant in Paithat that offers a variety of colorful vegetable dishes, stir-fried noodles, spring rolls, fried mushrooms, and soups. The pricing is based on the number of dishes you choose. It's a vegan restaurant with healthy vegetarian options and mock meat dishes. The buffet allows you to select four different dishes for an affordable price.
A hidden gem. Excellent food with a lot of variety, very cheap (about 50 baht for a meal), healthy, very friendly workers and great vibe. What else do you need? By the way the fried vegan “chicken” and vegan “pork” balls are really amazing!! And I am eating meat!
Gil Y — Google review
Best Vegan food in town. You can chose from around 10 different dishes and add some fried stuff as well. Everything is so delicious and knowing that there is no meat or MSG in the food is such a blessing. It's also super cheap, 45 baht for 3 different curry's with a huge portion of rice. Also try the noodle soup for 30 baht!
Krbs — Google review
Fantastic value for this price! I took rice with 3 different curries for 50 baht - very flavorful and tasty. Although some of the curries was super spicy, so I was a bit in pain. So I would recommend asking before ordering. The pineapple+sweet basil drink was also amazing! Overall place is spacious, ambient, with friendly service and offers great vegan food for a great price! Thank you!
Vita B — Google review
Food was super tasty and super fresh! Got the chicken/tofu soup which was super hot and very filling! For 59 baht. I was a mess trying to use the large spoons + chopsticks so the owner noticed and brought me over a traditional fork and spoon 🤭 Might go back to try the dumplings! P.S. I found a lot of vegan places close early and managed to get here before they close at 8pm
Atara Z — Google review
My favourite restaurant in Pai (maybe Thailand). Cheap and tasty vegan food with numerous options and variety. Has a buffet option, but also an extensive regular menu (pick a blue folder on the counter). The owner is lovely (if a little brisk) but he’s very friendly and runs the restaurant with incredible efficiency.
K S — Google review
Must try if you like vegan food and you are in Pai. The menu alone…it’s like being a kid in a candy shop. For real, and the food was insane. Definately recommend the pad Thai!! Also the spaghetti was awesome. Thank you! 💜

🌟🌟🌟🌟 Authentic Local Thai Eatery – Tasty, Affordable, and No-Frills 🍛 Flavorful Local Dishes Classic Thai favorites like pad kra pao, tom yum, green curry, and som tum packed with bold, authentic flavors. Cooked fresh and served hot — exactly how local Thai food should be. 💰 Affordable Prices Great value for money. Generous portions and wallet-friendly pricing make it perfect for daily meals or casual drop-ins. 🧑‍🍳 Home-Style Cooking No over-styled plating or gimmicks — just honest, home-cooked food from a local kitchen. The kind of place where the flavors speak louder than the decor. 🪑 Simple, Casual Setting Basic tables and fans, often street-side or open-air. Not fancy, but clean and comfortable enough to enjoy your meal. Expect plastic chairs, metal tables, and a few locals chatting nearby. 🤝 Friendly Local Vibe Staff are kind, even if English is limited. Pointing to dishes or photos on the menu works just fine. Warm smiles and quick service make you feel welcome. ⚠️ Minor Drawbacks Limited English signage or menus. Expect to sweat a little if you’re sitting outside during the day. Sometimes they run out of popular dishes later in the evening. If you're looking for real Thai food the way locals eat it — flavorful, fast, and full of soul — this kind of place delivers every time.

Fine dining experience in Pai. Fantastic food and superb service. Set in a wonderfully relaxing restaurant. Excellent vegetarian and vegan options and clearly labelled as such.

Lovely place with very good food and very reasonable prices - especially considering the beauty of the place. The interior has some colonial style vibes with comfy seats. The restaurant is indoor but has an outdoor atmosphere since it's fully open to the garden on one side. They take pride in their wines and have sommeliers at hand to help you choosing. Pork ribs were delicious and the cocktails were also really good. Definitely recommend!

Looking for a cozy escape? This spot offers just that, with a warm and inviting atmosphere that makes you feel right at home. You won't have to wait long to enjoy their tasty food, thanks to the good, fast service. The attentive staff go above and beyond to ensure a pleasant experience, making this a winning combination for a satisfying outing.

The best fine dining & most decent restaurant in Pai. It’s very secluded with formal seating. Interior is ancient while seats are very comfy. It’s a half indoor restaurant that offers the fresh air and ambience of outdoor style. Service is highly professional & staff speak fluent English. Not much variety of foods to choose though. Taste is good as well. All in all, a good value of money for the service, place & serenity you get. We stayed at the Reverie Siam so had access to the restaurant but was told they’re also open for walk-ins. The best part is when you stay here, they could literally serve the food for you at the river area. Breakfast here is fantastic. It’s all worth it!

Great theming in this restaurant. Bakery items pretty good. The healthier breakfast options were good, although the European cooked breakfasts are a little on the bland side.

First of all, the restaurant is super beautiful and has a nice charme. The Staff is friendly and really attentive. The food on the other hand was disappointing. As appetizer we had pork rib and jin lung, both dishes felt not really fresh-made. Main dish we had pan-seared duck breast and mushroom a’olio pasta. Duck was dry, it felt like they took it out of the freezer and cooked it directly. The pasta was actually pretty good, perfect al dente and very tasty.

For day 2, these 5 places should be enough to fill your day with something exciting to do in Mae Hong Son. Start the day with Wat Phra That Si Chom Thong Worawihan and make your way through the city to get to Fish Cave - Namtok Pha Suea National Park. This should take about 13 hours of your day.

Wat Phra That Si Chom Thong Worawihan is a stunning Buddhist temple complex that captivates visitors with its ornate golden shrines and vibrant statues. Nestled near the charming village of Ban Thawai, known for its rich tradition in woodcarving, this area showcases exquisite craftsmanship influenced by various indigenous styles including Lanna and Tibetan. The temple is part of the revered Relics of the Four Peaks, which hold significant cultural importance to both locals and travelers alike.
It was a wonderful stay with the guidance of Mrs. Jirapa , who was so helpful during the process of doing Vipasana . If it was not for her, I could had no finished the 3 weeks of doing Vipasana. The monastery is beautiful . Full of old history of the Buddha . His presence can be felt it. I strongly recommend.

We have been there for a 10 day retreat and enjoyed the great introduction into Vipassana meditation with many other people from all over the world. We met many international meditators. Jirapa provided a great assistance to get used to monastery life and meditation. We hope to have the chance to come back someday.

Amazing and Beautiful Thai temple in Chiang Mai. Must visit this place, very cool museum and interesting history of this temple. More info for who’s interested to learning, practicing meditation by the teacher. Must visit

I was there for 6 days in October. I am incredibly glad that my first acquaintance with Vipassana happened in this place. It was incredibly difficult, but mentors and teachers are doing everything possible to make your path more comfortable. Large temple area, near a lake, adapted food, good accommodation. I will definitely come back here🙏🏽

I found this wonderful place through Google review, so here's my contribution as well. For me it was an incredible personal journey, I left lighter both in body and mind, with a better direct understanding of meditation and Buddhism. I highly appreciate what Ajahn Tong has brought to life here, with all the monks, nuns and laypersons involved, that give acces to everybody to acces Dharma and live a better life. It is a very good environment to experience a better way of being. This being said, here are few more specific points that might help: - a strong emphasis on walking meditation practice and sitting meditation, with simple, clear but also detailed instructions and gradual complexity - introduction tour in the first 2 days by a welcoming layperson, then daily interviews with a senior monk - own kuti with bathroom - lots of beautiful meditation halls - 2 delicious meals per day - everything is inside the main monastery grounds, so you are close to the Buddhist way of life (involvement is optional, with the exception of the opening and closing ceremony) - outlined daily program, but you are individually responsible for your meditation practice - no group meditation sessions (except the optional chanting / meditation with the monks and nuns in the morning or evening) I stayed for 7 full days, and it was just enough! I would be curious to try the full 21 days program though. I highly recommend this experience, at least once in a lifetime! May all beings be free from suffering!

I completed the 21-day Vipassana program here, and what an experience it has been! 🧘🏼‍♂️🌸 Wat Chom Thong is a beautiful monastery, with numerous temples and meditation halls of all kinds, 90 minutes west of Chiang Mai. The monastery, a towering golden temple with several buildings and living quarters, offers a set of incredible Vipassana retreats, which are ongoing throughout the entire year, both for Thai and for internationals. This place is incredible. It's run by monks and nuns, welcoming meditators who wish to toughen their mind-body connection and have some space to rest, find clarity and equanimity. Unlike Goenka, which lasts 10 days, has very strict and well-defined rules to follow to the letter, here things are more relaxed and flexible, relying on your own wisdom and judgement. There are rules and eight precepts which you must abide by, but in general you are the master of your own experience here. You are encouraged to keep silent as much as you can, though many choose to socialize with other meditators during the breaks in between meditations. There’s a beautiful, small lake behind the monastery, with breathtaking sunrises early in the morning. There is even a “coffee garden”, a charming cafe immersed in nature, where you can stop by to get a cappuccino, an ice coffee or, my favorite, a hot foamy green tea with soy milk. The living quarters are simple but functional and clean. They give you a room with everything you need, and no more, which I feel strikes a good balance. The schedule is quite tough: wake up at 4am with the sound of the bells (and the half-stray dogs who enthusiastically share the space with you), breakfast at 6am, then lunch at 11am, and no more solid food until the next day. The rest of the time you meditate. Here, you disconnect to reconnect. No phones, no music, no movies, no reading, no writing, speaking as little as possible… although there is really nobody there to police you. It’s up to you, really. I’ve seen some people meditating 12-14 hours a day and not speaking to anyone, and people who took it a lot more lightly, checking instagram and doing home calls between meditations, although the latter didn’t last very long. They are quite flexible, both with the practice and the length of your stay. Some people do 5 days, others 10. If you can, I suggest doing the 21-day program, and then see how you feel, perhaps even continue with the advanced. Personally, I had my breakthroughs after the 11th day. If I had stopped earlier, I would’ve left with a completely different view of this place, its people, and of myself. I won’t go into the experience of the practice itself, it’s something you have to discover on your own. I was lucky to have Phra Ajahn Poonsak (Art) Suwadhano as my teacher, a gentle soul dedicated to helping others strengthen their mind and body through the practice of Vipassana. Even though he’s been fighting a fatal disease for a long time, he still came to give us guidance. Some days he was too ill to come in person, but he always made time for me. Really an inspiration. As the final days were approaching, I wanted to ask if I could stay a bit longer. Before I could explain why, Jipara, my personal contact, stopped me and said, “This is your home. You can stay as long as you need”, with the kind of loving compassion that almost had me crying. And they do all this absolutely for free. They offer you a room, teach you a practice that gives you mental tools that can make you stronger and help you for your entire life, feed you twice a day, give you access to some of the most majestic halls and meditation spaces you will ever see in your life, absolutely for free. It’s amazing. Since this place is run by donations, they invite you to leave one before you leave, which I absolutely encourage you to do: whatever you can, within your means, give as much as you feel is right. Absolutely magical place. I could write a whole book about my experience here, and perhaps one day I will, but for this review I’ll stop here. Highly recommended 👍🏻 🧘🏼‍♂️

Great international vipassana meditation retreat temple under teaching by Ajarn Tong. Teachers and office stuffs act with pure Dhamma, they are always welcoming to help your practice. I appreciated teachings I’ve received here. plus, food provided here is super, I look forward to meal time everyday. Would come back again.
Wang X — Google review
I initially planned to stay 5 days, but later I extended to 7 days, because I found that I gained improvement everyday and wanted to achieve more. Life here is both easy and tough. Wat Chom Tong provides individually clean kuti (with private bathroom) to meditators, ensuring we are able to do the meditation in our own rooms. Everything necessary for living are accessible within 10 mins walk, from snacks, foods, toiletries to cloths and medicines. The meals here are very nice too, while the breakfast is a bit heavy to me, the lunch always gives me surprises. I am so lucky to have Jirapa as my teacher, she is such a graceful and peaceful Nun, who patiently responded to my questions and troubles. Above all, the best part is my daily reporting to Prah Ajah, talking to him makes me refreshed every morning. And I progressed gradually under his instructions with patience and enouragements. Here comes the tough side, you must fight with hunger and long hours of practice. All in all, I looking forward to coming back someday and finish 21 days basic course.

Doi Inthanon National Park is a popular destination in Thailand, offering scenic trails, pagodas near the summit, and beautiful waterfalls. It is known for its natural beauty and is home to the highest point in Thailand. The park features Buddhist temples, hot springs, and various sights and activities. Visitors can enjoy the chilly mountain air at the highest point in Chiang Mai while taking in breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
Beautiful waterfalls, pagodas, karen Village and highest point in Thailand. We took a tour from Chiang Mai which was nice so the guide could explain everything. Bring a raincoat and good walking shoes as some of the falls spray and it can rain at the top! Definitely worth it!

Doi Inthanon National Park is a must-visit! We had an incredible day here — the weather shifted from clear skies to clouds, and both views were absolutely spectacular in their own way. The twin temples at the summit were stunning, and there’s even a little coffee shop with a top floor that offered beautiful views. This was the only time in Thailand that I actually felt chilly, and it was such a refreshing break to enjoy the cool air for a few hours. We also stopped at a small village where we learned how scarves and clothes are made and had a delicious dinner. Having a guide made the experience even better — we learned so much about the local people, culture, and history. Highly recommend visiting with a guide if you can!

Doi Inthanon National Park is exceptionally well maintained. The paths, gardens, and viewing areas are clean, clearly marked, and well cared for. You can tell there’s consistent upkeep—no trash, no overgrown trails, and facilities are in good condition. The atmosphere is serene. As you climb higher, the air cools and everything slows down. The park often sits above the cloud line, so you’re surrounded by mist and drifting clouds that give it an almost otherworldly calm. It’s quiet, peaceful, and feels far removed from city noise. The combination of clean, orderly grounds and the natural beauty of the mountains makes it an ideal place to slow down, walk, and take in the scenery. It’s one of those rare spots where human care and nature work in harmony.

We visited Doi Inthanon National Park today, and despite the long journey from Chiang Mai, it was absolutely worth it. We traveled by scooter, which took a little over two hours to reach the summit. Upon entering the park, there is an entrance fee of 300 THB per person plus 20 THB for the scooter. Our first stop was at the waterfalls, which were beautiful and free to visit. From there, we continued up the mountain to do the Kew Mae Pan Nature Trail — a 3 km scenic loop. This hike costs 200 THB per group and includes a guide, which is mandatory (you cannot do this trail without one). A group can include several people, but in our case, we were just two. After the hike, we headed all the way up to the summit, where no additional fees were required. There are a few smaller trails at the top as well, and they are also free to explore. The park itself is stunning, with breathtaking views and refreshing mountain air. It was around 17°C when we arrived, but it can be much colder in the morning, so make sure to dress warmly. Although it’s quite expensive, especially with the dual pricing for tourists (which is very frustrating in Thailand), the experience is still definitely worth it. Doi Inthanon is a must-visit for nature lovers, hikers, and anyone looking to escape the heat and enjoy some truly unique scenery.

Great and large national park. We came for birdwatching. Perhaps October not the best month but we did manage to see a lot of new birds since we are not from Thailand. The summit was sunny for a short while before 10 am. Better to come before all the tour busses arrive from Chiang Mai as of 10.30 am. The walking path past the summit was closed until October 30. We did manage to spot birds at that parking spot. It's just passed the official parking for the temples. Tickets for the park are 300 baht and a car costs 30 baht. Valid for 5 days.

I rented a bike the day before (250 baht) n I set off from town 5 plus in morning . Is end Oct 2025.. a little chilly on the way. Easy to navigate using Google map. Can drink n eat along the way .. many petrol kiosks. small eateries etc Entrance is 300 baht n 20 for the motorbike . Was 11 degrees celcius when I was at the peak. (About 7am) … chilly but good to soak up the sun . Went for one of the nature trail at the peak which a memorial site for soldier ((?)) was erected . I swept the area clean with the broom … to make the devas, spirits n animals happy . Went to one of the waterfall .. Just ok Cannot dip Just see As I rode down the Doi .. , I went to the ticket office originally to use the toilet but I heard water … there’s a river flowing .. water probably from the waterfalls up there … Waterfalls or rivers or rain or whatever … aren’t they all the same ? we people attached a name to form(rupa) Anyway I changed into a short n enjoyed the cold water under the hot sun . Passed by a beautiful temple n turned in to pay respect to Buddha There’s a jade Buddha statue in main hall. 2 price system for locals n foreigners .!!! is it worth 300 baht ? Is a very well managed park Perhaps too well managed with steps etc (Isn’t it supposed to be back to nature ?) I did enjoy my time here Perhaps the authority can really look into dual pricing system n the (probably hefty)300 baht ??

The highest mountain in Thailand. Sometimes people call it “the roof of Thailand“. It’s much cooler there, so don’t forget to bring a sweater. The view is spectacular and the hike is nice and shaded.
Elena V — Google review
Don’t rely on the photos. It was a huge disappointment after driving 2 hours from Chiang Mai. You must pay for each entrance, about 300 baht per person. The place feels commercial and lacks any real charm, except for the waterfall, which is genuinely impressive (and was for free !) P.S. take warm clothes if you decide to go

Nestled in the Khun Yuam district, Thung Bua Tong Fields at Doi Mae U Kho is a breathtaking sight to behold. This expansive area is adorned with vibrant yellow Mexican sunflowers that reach their peak bloom during Thailand's wintertime from November to February. The fields can be admired from a hilltop pavilion, offering stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes. Despite the challenging ascent, visitors are rewarded with a spectacular and magnificent display of flowers.
During the sunflower bloom, November into December, the fields are awash with flowers. It can be very crowded during this time, particularly on weekends. There is no entry fee and just driving through is amazing. Parking a car can be difficult. During the off-season the hills are still a nice scene but not the same.

We dropped in whilst riding the Mae Hong Son Loop right at the end of the rainy season in the last week of October. There were some open flowers but the main bloom was still two weeks or more away. On the plus side, there were very few tourists around and the atmosphere is quite serene.

A must go! Super big and free to explore.. i went around 2 pm and the sky was a bit dark. Sadly i didn’t have time to wait until sunset but i bet it will even more beautiful Do check the weather.. i think the best time would be on November when all the flowers bloom

Really beautiful spot. Great place to watch the sunset. Some food options though I didn't try any. The flowers are very beautiful and the view is spectacular. The roads leading up to it are nice but not that notable so on the drive up we worried we'd come all that way for a disappointing tourist trap, but honestly once we reached the fields we found it truly breathtaking. My photos and video should say the rest.

I came end October and many flowers were still not open. I imagine if you come here mid November it will be awesome. When you are on highway 108 or on 1263 then you ahould definitely drive up here it is only about 10 km from the intersection with 1263.

Wat Phra That Mae Yen is a temple located in the town of Pai, offering a breathtaking view of the surrounding valley. The temple features a monumental staircase leading to a large white Buddha statue at the top, providing visitors with panoramic views over Pai.
It’s a beautiful place came right as they opened up in the morning and we spoke with a monk who’s super nice and friendly and helped us with our Thai and how to greet a monk properly, very peaceful place beautiful views and very clean, it was under construction when we went but it didn’t take away from the beauty of it I would definitely recommend also there’s some cute dogs usually hanging around at the top and bottom. ( remember to respect the rules and cover up!)
Sam H — Google review
It was nice to see but the Buddha was ‘under construction’ (bamboo scaffolding). You have a nice view from there but I guess there are similar if not better views in the area. Go early morning to avoid the heat. Although the stairs are manageable. We spent about 20 minutes there so it’s good to combine with other activities.
Carlijn K — Google review
The view is next level for Pai. You can see everything with a very short drive and walk. The Buddha itself is under reconstruction with restoration work part way, which was still interesting to see though the view White Buddha faces out to, is what makes this spot so special. No entry fee required. A local advised walking but I took a scooter, and after seeing the drive in I wouldn't recommend to walk this. The entrance is a large gate on the road, leading further up a driveway to the beginning of the stairs, the road continues to the right for cars and scooters.
Azzurro B — Google review
The Buddha is under construction and repairs. It's not white at the moment and some pieces are broken. Not sure how long it's going to take, so be aware... Been said that, the viewpoint is just breathtaking! And another reason to go, is that good feeling you climed 300 stairs and survived 😃😃

I went here to meet the sunrises, unfortunately, the entrance close at 06:00 pm — so keep this in mind before visiting, there is a gorgeous view of the valley And very nice temple And not too much tourists — especially early morning (but maybe because it’s low season) In September- October 2025 the Buddha statue is being reconstructed here

We climbed all the way up the stairs but found it closed. No reason given. Disappointing! Then we realized we could actually walk up along the road for cars. So only the stairs are closed but it's open for the public via the main entrance. It is quite a climb but the view more than made it up. Good workout!

Tham Pla - Namtok Pha Suea National Park is a 511-sq.-km. park known for its lush forests, stunning waterfalls, and unique fish cave featuring a Rishi statue. The park's main attractions include the Tham Pla (Fish Cave) and the picturesque Pha Suea waterfall. The area boasts fertile forests that are the source of numerous streams and several famous waterfalls, making it a popular destination for nature enthusiasts.
Nice place to walk around. First time we were seeing fish going for leaves and walloping it down in a few seconds.

This was a very beautiful spot to stop to break up the drive. The price wasn't too expensive and they even have a local price for Thai people to visit.. The foreigner price is more expensive 🤪... The fish were beautiful to look at and feed. We sat down at the one of the shops for chicken.. It was nice that the shop owners were calm. The only thing is the chicken was stale and not very hot so I think the food could be improved a little for the price.. Otherwise definetly worth stopping still 😊🙏

The Fish Cave Park is a very friendly and beautiful place to visit. I was expecting the cave itself to be larger and more impressive, so it was a bit of a disappointment. Nevertheless, the park is peaceful and relaxing — a nice stop for a short break during your trip. The entrance fee is 100 THB for adults and 50 THB for children. At the entrance, you can also buy fish food (50 THB for three baskets). It’s fun for kids to feed the fish and enjoy the calm atmosphere.

Not realy a cave but its a combo ticket with the waterfall i did earlyer that day. Go to the back of the beautifull jungle park, buy some food and feed the fish, go all the way to the back, there you can see the fish swimming in the cave below you. Great fun, think it would be a great thing to do with kids.

Pay attention! I give 5 stars because you pay once for 3 place: fish cave, waterfall and park with rafting during a day. We didn't visit the last one and cashier couldn't explain included rafting in a ticket or not, so i don't know. But cave and waterfall are amazing! After waterfall in 5 km are small farm, you can visit it free
Maria A — Google review
I would not call it a cave more like two holes where the fishes eat your food your bring them. You can buy the food at the cave for 10 thb just put a 10 thb in the cup or you can buy at many places around the park or outside. Do not care about what people say the fish not it eat salad or the fish not eat fish food. Some fish are picky but there is plenty of fish and they eat mostly anything you give them. Its a 20 min walk before you reach the "cave" and you can feed fishes along the way as well. Thai 20 thb and Non Thai 200 THB however you can visit the waterfall with the same name and you can visit the park along the same route 4001 it is the same park. So if you planning to visit 3 places in one day it is worth the price. For fish cave alone i would not pay 200 THB. The staff is very friendly and can tell you where you can use the ticket more. If you want you can camp here as well but i see nobody did that but you can we asked.

Cafecito is a renowned coffee institution in Pai, offering a cozy atmosphere and a daily bakery selection alongside Mexican specials. While their coffee may not be the best in town, their Mexican classics like quesadillas, tacos, tostadas, and tortas are highly praised. The homemade chorizo, pulled chicken, avocado or mushroom carnitas options with various toppings such as black beans and pickled jalapenos are particularly popular.
I absolutely love the burritos here! The coffee is amazing, and the hot sauce selection is fantastic. The tortillas are incredible, and the location is right across the street from the park, which is really convenient. There are also plenty of nice places to sit, especially for larger groups.

We had an amazing dining experience and got our Mexican fix.😁 We were seated straight away, the staff was friendly and helpful. We ordered mushroom tostada which was my favorite, fish tacos which were super tasty, chicken tostada which must have been real good too but the hubs wouldn't let me have any, The hubs ordered another entree pictured with the egg on it and I can't remember what it is called but we are all of that too. We definitely recommend you try this cafe. The ingredients are fresh and everything is made to order. The prices are attractive as well.
