Tsuwano-cho in 3 days

If you only have 3 days to spend in Tsuwano-cho, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Tsuwano, often called the “Little Kyoto of San’in,” is a small castle town known for its preserved samurai and merchant streets lined with white-walled buildings and carp-filled canals. Visitors can climb to Taikodani Inari Shrine, one of Japan’s major Inari shrines, for hillside views framed by vermilion torii gates. The ruins of Tsuwano Castle, a distinctive Catholic church, and museums linked to local history and literature add cultural depth. On some days, a nostalgic steam locomotive runs to the town, enhancing its quietly atmospheric, rural feel.
With favorites like Shointei, Otometoge St Mary's Chapel, and Yomeiji Temple, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Shointei and Minoya so you can get the best taste of Tsuwano-cho while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Taikodani Inari-jinja Shrine is a significant Inari shrine in Japan, known for its picturesque views and iconic red torii gates. It is one of the five great Inari shrines dedicated to the harvest god, Tsuwano Oinarisan. The shrine was built in 1773 after the deity's spirit was invited from Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto.
This location is undoubtedly a standout, ranking among the most memorable spots encountered in Japan. While no monks were sighted during the visit, the shrine remains an active place of worship, suggesting their presence. The site is particularly striking due to its impressive column of Tori gates, culminating in the largest one the reviewer has ever seen, which guards the entrance to both the shrine and the town. Admission and parking are complimentary, with souvenirs available for purchase to support the shrine's upkeep. This is undeniably a destination worth exploring.

Always love the walk up the mid hills to the temple as it is a good workout and it gives a breathtaking view as well. The temple is nicely done up and is quite huge.

Wonderful shintoist temple with a path going up from the town similar to the Kyoto Inari temple. From there, you can also climb to the castle ruins in about 30 minutes or go up with the chair lift, where you will have an amazing view of the tsuwano city and its valley!
Andrea — Google review
Definitely worth the trip up the mountains for this. One of the most sacred and beautiful shrines in Japan, and definitely worth a visit if you want to avoid the overcrowded touristy places!
Amos C — Google review
I absolutely loved this place. Amongst one of my most memorable places in Japan. I didn’t see any monks during my visit, but it was a working Shrine and I have no doubt they’re there. There is a column of Tori gates as well, plus the biggest Tori gate I’ve ever seen guarding the entrance to the town and Shrine. Admission and parking is free, but souvenir’s are offered for sale to support the Shrine. Definitely worth a visit!

A small Japanese Shrine located at mid-levels. Not many tourists and it is easy to find. Beautiful old Japanese architecture. There is a great view outside the Shrine. The drive along and the stay there will be refreshing.
Benny C — Google review
(visits 1) Parking was free. No English here. This place is not really meant for foreign tourists. It's a shrine more than tourist attraction. I was here for the nearby castle and this is where the parking was. I of course went to check out the shrine. It was beautiful. The view was beautiful. But I felt rather out of place as I realized this very much more a shrine shrine rather than a tourist shrine. I quickly left to go find the castle.
R D — Google review
The shrine is the highlight of Tsuwano town especially if you know where to find the rear entrance. Taikodani Inari-jinja shrine has a big impact on the town of Tsuwano. One of the roads down into the town has an impressive big red gate as if the hole town is part of the shrine precinct. You can see the shrine from most place in the town overlooking the valley. It was built to protect the castle that no longer stands. The shrine has resulted in the popularity of deep fried tofu skin noodles and the same stuffed with rice, which are likewise named after the fox, inari, that is said to like to eat them. There is a car park directly in front of the shrine allowing visitors to go to pray or purchase omamori talismen after having only climbed a short stair case, but above all, I recommend the rear entrance so that you can go through the "1000" scarlet gates, climbing 263 steps. I think that the red gates symbolise something very important. By going through 1000 of them one may perhaps attain a little more purity at the shrine at the top. The rear entrance, with all the red gates, an be accessed along the river bank near to Yasaka Jinja Shrine which is also marked on Google Maps. Unfortunately there is no car park so the designated driver will have to use the main entrance, or walk, or take a taxi from the station to Yasaka Jinja. Taikodani Inari-jinja shrine itself is very well pretty, if a little gaudy, and the views down onto the town are very pleasant. The shrine sells Hello Kitty, and fox depicting omamori amulets as well as more traditional omamori (good luck charm) variations. The fox is the messenger of the Esoteric Buddhism related god herein enshrined but offerings are often made to the fox. One can purchase the deep friend tofu skin to make as an offering at the shrine for that reason. The fox is associated with esoteric Buddhism and with sex. The fox is sometimes depicted as having a phallic tail. The shrine, and the town of Tsuwano, is 1 hour by car or steam locomotive (March to November) and two and a half hours by road bicycle along route nine from Yamaguchi, through the scenic valley of Choumonkyo and the apple production region of Tokusa. There is, incidentally another famous, and attractive multi-red gated shrine, Moto no Sumi Inari shrine on the coast in the adjacent Yamaguchi prefecture, near the corner of Honshu, and hence perhaps the name of the shrine which means "the base of the corner fox shrine" which is I think a very appropriate name and location for one of these red-gated fox shrines.

Historical landmark
Tonomachi, specifically Tonomachi Dori, offers a unique contrast to the narrow streets of Kyoto. The wide and straight main street is flanked by the white walls of former samurai residences and features picturesque canals teeming with koi carp and blooming irises in June. Visitors are transported to another era as they leisurely stroll through this postcard-worthy scene. Despite its historical charm, Tonomachi is not as bustling as other tourist destinations, allowing for a relaxing experience.
Tsuwano's main street is a captivating blend of history and natural beauty. Lined with meticulously preserved samurai residences, the street offers a nostalgic glimpse into old Japan. A serene canal, teeming with vibrant carp, runs alongside, enhancing the idyllic atmosphere. Visitors can explore charming shops, savor local cuisine, and even experience the traditional art of sake-making. A leisurely stroll through this enchanting area is a must for any traveler seeking an authentic Japanese experience.
Dhruv K — Google review
Main Street was super enjoyable to walk on, you can feed carps in the canal, it’s so much fun for kids and adults as well! Food was about ¥100. Was interesting to find out that long time ago those canals were used as a water supply in case of a fire and as an emergency food supply too (carps). Amazing.

Simply love the peace and quiet here. So clean and tidy too. One can relax by strolling along the non busy road taking in the picturesque scenery and the local culture. The fishes in the drains add to the beauty and tranquility of the place

This is a main sightseeing street of Twuwano town. A street surrounded by samurai houses and water canal. We can see swimming carps in a clear water of a canal. All housese are preserved and maintained as old Japan. There are shops, restaurants and Sake brewery to visit. It's a pleasure walk.

Tsuwano Catholic Church is a charming example of Western Gothic architecture in the town. The building is a registered tangible cultural property and features a beautiful exterior, with an interior design that reflects Christianity. What makes it unique is the use of tatami mats instead of chairs. Visitors can also explore a mini museum showcasing photographs and religious articles related to the history of Catholicism in Japan. Additionally, there's a playground for kids outside and an opportunity to purchase religious items at affordable prices.
Little Church that sits in Tsuwano. 20 minutes walk from the Chapel and the morning mass is at the Convent a few streets down. People need to know what happened here. What Christians went through to practice freely.

If you"re a Catholic like me and you happened to pass by Tsuwano or visited Tsuwano,Japan , there is a solemn Catholic ⛪ church there. Please visit the church and feel the peace and holiness while praying for your devotion. Outside is a playground for kids and a mini museum where you can see photograps and some religious articles about catholicism history in Japan. You can also buy religious items like rosary, pamplets saints figurine, bracelets in a very cheap price . Outside the church you will surely love to watch Koi 's (japanese colorful fish) swimming in a very clean water canal . They are really wonderful , colorful and big different kind of fishes.

Tsuwano Japan Heritage Centre is a must-visit destination in Tsuwano, often referred to as 'Little Kyoto.' The center offers detailed explanations about the town's history and cultural significance. Visitors can explore the exhibits with the help of audio guides and knowledgeable staff. The center also provides English pamphlets for international visitors. Additionally, it houses a collection of 100 paintings depicting Tsuwano, adding to its allure as a cultural hub.
I had such a wonderful time visiting this small museum! The woman that helped me was so happy to share so much wonderful information about this wonderful town! I am so happy that I came to visit this place. The two highlights about this place that stood out to me were the paintings of the town from history along with their photos of it today. I also liked the costumes of the town's Heron Dance Festival. I had a wonderful time!

The Anno Art Museum, known for its exquisite collection of paintings by Mr. Yasuno, is a popular destination in Tsuwano. Aside from showcasing the beautiful artworks, the museum also features a replica of a classroom from that era, providing visitors with a nostalgic experience. The museum boasts an extensive selection of books and paintings dedicated to Mr. Yasuno, attracting art enthusiasts who are always on the lookout for something new.

(Translated by Google) Visited on August 21, 2024. I would like to visit again when some sort of special exhibition is held! This museum has a deep and unfathomable charm that you won't be able to leave once you visit. First, focus on looking at Mr. Yasuno's work and reading his explanations! After that, while watching Mr. Yasuno's 16-17 minute introductory video produced by NHK Educational, read ``Mitsumasa Yasuno's Record 1'' and ``Mitsumasa Yasuno's Record 2'' on the table. If you do so, I think that the works that Mr. Yasuno drew, his thoughts on each work that are written in the explanatory text, and his thoughts on this museum will become more deeply embedded in your heart. It was Mr. Yasuno's own wish when this museum was created, and it has a school-like structure, and in the library, you can carefully read his books and picture books. You will be able to remember the excitement once again as you wonder, ``Is this the work that was published in this book?'' No matter how many times I watched the video, I never got tired of it, and I watched it three times and spent almost three hours watching it. Perhaps because it is a municipal facility, the staff were very courteous when dealing with visitors. I also appreciated that if you use the parking lot in front of the station before coming to the museum, the parking fee is free. The staff's explanations were very thorough and helpful. I want to visit again and again and learn more about Mr. Yasuno. I felt that not only Mr. Yasuno himself but also the museum itself was an important treasure and asset of Tsuwano Town. Highly recommended for those who like paintings and visiting museums! The location is good as it is right next to the station. This is an art museum that we hope will continue to be visited and loved by as many people as possible.

The planetarium is open at 12:00, 13:00, 14:00, and 15:00, and lasts about 35 minutes. You must make a reservation at the reception desk to use the planetarium. I was wondering why there was a planetarium in an art museum, but I heard from Mr. Yasuno that art and science are inseparable, and that he wanted everyone to understand the importance of imagination. The building's beautiful exterior blends in with the Tsuwano cityscape, and the interior has a warm, nostalgic feel. It was worth the long trip. The Mori Ogai Memorial Museum is located next to the old residence of Tsuwano, where the renowned Meiji-period literary figure spent his childhood. The museum showcases a collection of Mori Ogai's personal belongings and handwritten drafts. It also hosts events like memorial seminars and forums on significant dates related to Mori Ogai. Visitors can explore both the modern memorial hall and Ogai's former residence, gaining insight into his life from birth to death.
(Translated by Google) It wasn't until I came to Tsuwano that I learned that Mori Ogai was from here. Since I moved to Tokyo as a child, I have never returned, so perhaps people don't have that impression. When I entered here, I could feel his presence as I saw his multifaceted life displayed in chronological order. The story of Ogai's career as a translator, doctor, and great writer is carefully summarized, and the book quietly talks about Ogai's inner life and the social situation at the time. The letters, personal belongings, and manuscripts on display in the museum are valuable materials that are rarely seen, each with their own weight and helping us to understand his humanity more deeply. The exhibition explanations are clear and designed so that even those who are not familiar with literature can appreciate the charm of Ogai. The calm lighting and spatial composition of the museum naturally guide visitors' eyes toward the exhibits, allowing them to experience the tranquil flow of time. Overall, I once again realized that the Mori Ogai Memorial Museum is more than just an exhibition facility, it is a place where you can feel the life of a man named Ogai and the spirit of his time.

I'm not an educated person, but I only knew Mori Ogai as a writer, and I learned that he was a man of tremendous talent, including the fact that he was a doctor. However, I learned that the Mori family was a product of Spartan-style education, based on the family's desire for restoration and prosperity, which made me think about many things. The fact that Mori Ogai never visited Tsuwano after traveling at the age of 10 suggests that he had mixed feelings about Tsuwano, including the fact that his last words were "Iwami-jin." . I think it was a good museum, including some very interesting and modern buildings, but given that it was so deserted, the entrance fee was 600 yen (honestly, I felt it was expensive) → 200 yen to 300 yen ( I think it would be better to make it a little easier to enter (free of charge as a tourist resource to attract more people to visit Tsuwano), and more people would be able to enter. The paperback books at the souvenir shop were also tanned. thank you very much. Hori Gardens, located in Tsuwano, is a historic site featuring the former residence of Hori Tojuro, known as the 'Mining King of Western Honshu.' The 6.5-hectare grounds encompass gardens from different periods, including the Edo and Meiji periods. The Rakuzan-so reception hall boasts a picturesque pond-centered garden with waterfalls and stone lanterns set against a rocky mountain backdrop.
One of the most beautifully relaxing places I visited. You can lay down on the tatami in a room facing a splendid garden. When we visited it was rain lightly and the sound of water drops on the leaves gave a poetic touch to the lovely view.

Beautiful and quite place. It is a bit far away from the town center, only recommended for travelers with car or a passion for cycling (a bit of uphill), but if you want to just stroll around a beautiful old mansion, with perfect garden and orchestrated view, I can highly recommend. The garden is comprised of four areas: the front garden of the main house, the detached Rakuzanso Villa and its garden, Rakuzanen, the Warakuen Garden on the opposite bank, and the exterior garden of the former Hatasako Hospital. The most impressive feature was the strolling pond garden in Rakuzanen. The stone lanterns, waterfall rock formations, and swimming koi carp in the shade are picturesque, creating a timeless, cleansing tranquility. The view from the veranda is like a framed painting. The space, filled only with the sounds of the wind and water, naturally invites you to take a deep breath. The former Hatasako Hospital building, built in modern times, still stands on the grounds, offering a glimpse into the history of the Hori family, who also contributed greatly to welfare and medical care. The white walls and namako walls along the road are beautiful, and it's wonderful that the whole area has been preserved as a single historical landscape. Italian restaurant
Pizza restaurant
Nestled conveniently across from the post office on the main tourist road leading to the station, Pino Rosso is a charming Italian restaurant that has been delighting diners for over 20 years. Known for its authentic Italian cuisine, this family-run gem serves up an array of mouthwatering appetizers, pizzas, pastas, and delectable pastries. The menu features daily lunch specials that include assorted appetizers alongside your choice of pizza or pasta and a drink—perfect for those looking to savor a delightful meal.
I am an Italian who judges Italian food with the severity of a Spanish Inquisitor, and I can say without hyperbole that Pino Rosso, one of the twin Italian-restaurant gems of Tsuwano (the other is Artigiano), is among the finest Italian restaurants in the world. In a time where I can personally attest it is difficult to get actually decent Italian food even in ROME anymore, the sumptuous fare in Pino Rosso only grows more brilliant, more powerful with every visit. These culinary sorceries exist only to break men's wills upon the wheel. A wheel of cheese and meats. It is one of the great ironies of the universe that I have to come once a year to a tiny Japanese mountain village to finally experience some outstanding Italian cuisine. But outstanding barely does it justice. The Red Pine of Pino Rosso, Kenji Akamatsu, can take a handful of ingredients an in 15 minutes prepare a feast that would blind God. If you find yourself there, I beg you to try the shrimp and cream sauce pasta, which I rate without exception as one of the 5 greatest pastas I've ever eaten in the entire world. It is a symphony. There is nothing left to say of it. It is better not to even speak of it; It will take hold of you, and you will resent it's absence. The imported prosciutto he lays upon his pizza, like a veil upon an Emperor's bride, was impossibly thin. It was a cotton candy of meat. His bruschetta is perfection, an explosion of flavor on homemade bread of the perfect consistency. His cooked pork can stop time, as the smoky complexities of the pork engage in grand rhetoric on your tongue. I could go on for hours. It is honestly worth the trip to Tsuwano just to come for this restaurant alone. You will not regret it.

I have been coming here for the last 4 annual trips and have never regretted coming. The food is so solid. The best Italian u can find outside Italy 🇮🇹, or maybe perhaps even better than a lot of true born Italian restaurants themselves. The owner chef will do omakase for us and cook us the numbers of meals without any repeat. This is a true showcase of his skills and knowledge. The lady boss is so friendly and nice, making the dining experience so wonderful. We never fail to be impressed and amazed and will keep coming back until something prevented us from supporting them. Highly recommend to everyone for sure.

It seemed to be a restaurant run by an old couple, and they seemed accustomed to dealing with foreigners. The black tofu sushi seemed to have a bit of a ginger flavor and I thought the seasoning was a bit strong. There seemed to be some likes and dislikes. Tsuwano Castle Ruins, dating back to the 12th century, offer a glimpse into history from its commanding position above the town. The ruins are easily accessible via a short walk from Taikodani Inari Shrine or a quick chairlift ride. The site boasts stunning views and beautiful stone walls, making it worth the visit. For those interested in history and breathtaking scenery, Tsuwano Castle Ruins is a must-see attraction in Japan.
Absolute must. If you take the china trail you can make it a nice circular walk and you'll see the massive cypress. It's actually a proper walk though, felt more than the signs were telling me. The temple at the North end was under going restoration at the time of writing, but the tree made it worth it. Full circular walk was about two to three hours

If you've seen castle ruins, you'll have a rough idea of what to expect, but the setting and scale really set this one apart. Large compound and nowhere on the premises has a bad view. I recommend paying for the chairlift unless you really want the exercise and have lots of time to spend.

Washibara Hachimangu Shrine is situated near Tsuwano Jozan Park in Tsuwano Town and is known for its association with Japan's oldest Yabusame horseback archery field. The shrine, a nationally-designated Important Cultural Property, features Shinto architecture dating back to the Muromachi period.
The Yabusame was awesome. There was tons of information and explanation provided in English which I didn't expect, but greatly appreciated. The space was laid out well so you could get an okay view. The main shrine is currently under renovation. Really enjoyed my time in Tsuwano as a whole.

The horse was moving so fast that I couldn't tell when the bow was shot. Then I realized how difficult it is to shoot a bow while running a fast horse. There were three targets, and I thought it would be amazing if I could hit even one. There was only one person who got all three marks. I thought the procession to enter the Baba before the Yabusame started was wonderful with all the glittering costumes. I was lucky enough to hear Governor Maruyama speak before the Yabusame began, and to see the shrine building before it was demolished for renovations, making it a memorable trip. The Morijuku Art Museum is a charming museum located just a short walk from JR Yamaguchi Line's Tsuwano Station. Housed in a reconstructed and remodeled residence of the Tsuwano domain's principal village headman, the museum boasts a traditional Japanese house interior with thick beams and a central pillar.
(Translated by Google) It's wonderful, including the paintings on display. It seems that it has been opened for free in recent years. You can take photos, but the lighting will reflect and won't take good photos, so make sure you look closely. It is one of the must-visit places in Tsuwano where you can enjoy the atmosphere of a headman's residence. The building itself is quaint, and the exhibition of paintings by local painters Akira Nakao and Maya Yoshiura is very nice. There is also a beautiful garden, so we recommend visiting when you visit Tsuwano. The space is filled with the warmth of Japanese wood and shadows, and the residence of the head lord of the Tsuwano clan has been restored to its original state, with soothing paintings by painters Akira Nakao and Maya Yoshiura on display. I was more interested in the houses and gardens than the artworks. My companion was admiring the painting carefully. Although the tour was kindly explained to me, I forgot to take pictures of the interior and the paintings. Sushi restaurant
If you're on the hunt for an authentic sushi experience in Tsuwano, look no further than Fukuzushi. This charming establishment, run by the esteemed Nagamine family, offers a delightful atmosphere where you can sit at the counter and watch the skilled chefs—known as "itamae-san"—craft your meal right before your eyes. The menu features some English translations, making it accessible for non-Japanese speakers.
The preeminent sushi experience in Tsuwano, and one of the only dining options open after 9 pm, Fukuzushi is an absolute must for any visitor. Run by generations of the Sushi-master Nagamine family, it is some of the freshest sushi I’ve had outside of Tokyo. Also try their non-sushi offerings! The Tai-no-arani (boiled sea bream) is amazing, and a giant helping of it only costs 900 yen!

I really enjoyed my dinner at Fukuzushi. The owners were lovely people. We had a great conversation in my broken Japanese and they were very accommodating. The nigiri and tuna rolls were delicious and the prices were very reasonable, especially for how tasty everything was. I highly recommend. I'm so glad to be here in Tsuwano 🙌🏼

The food here is so good. They have an English menu with pictures so you know exactly what you are getting. Parking is very limited so we just parked down the street and walked back to it. Sake was really good hot. Will come back when in the area again.

Absolutely loved our lunch here. The chef/owner is very friendly and hospitable. He has an English menu. You can sit at the bar or at a table (recommend the bar), popular with the locals - had some great laughs over a couple of beers and shochou. The sushi was first rate. Super authentic experience.

This is a very good sushi place. I recommend sitting at the counter, so one can see the chefs, or as the Japanese say, "itamae-san" (direct translation: "the person in front of the cutting-bard") They have some English in the menu, the chef also spoke a bit English, and the fish is fresh... some are still swimming. It has a very nice atmosphere, definitely will be a regular. (advised to go before 6, as the counter gets full quite fast)

Day 3

Proximity is everything
For day 3, we bundled attractions like Otometoge St Mary's Chapel and Eitaiin temple and other places within a close range, so that the time it takes to travel between all of them is less than one hour. Combined with the average time people spend there, your day should take about 7 hours.

The Otome Toge Maria Chapel, an iconic historical monument, offers a serene and tranquil environment for meditation. Situated in Sanjakuro, this chapel has witnessed significant events. In the midnight hours, a mysterious lady dressed in a stunning blue gown and veil reminiscent of Santa Maria's image appears to visitors. She captivates them with her engaging narratives, creating an atmosphere that dispels any sense of loneliness. However, it is advised to keep this encounter confidential until the narrator's demise.
A haven of tranquility perfect for meditation and introspection. Its historical significance adds profound depth for Christian visitors. I wholeheartedly recommend exploring the monument within the bamboo forest to complete this enriching experience.

A nice, peaceful place for meditation. The path is a little slippery but the handrails are convenient. If you are Catholic, a very awe-inspiring sight.
Shizuka M — Google review
I hike to the chapel on a semi-regular basis. (About 15 minutes up and 10 minutes down). While it's quite steep (I don't recommend wearing heels/anything shoes that slip easily) the chapel itself and the monuments at the clearing are really beautiful and well-kept. There are explanations written in both English and Japanese about the Christian martyrs who died in Tsuwano/Japan during the Edo period. It's definitely worth a stop for those interested in Japan's religious history or for those who just want a pleasant excursion into the mountains. In the spring, the Chapel is surrounded by Sakura. In the fall, the entire trail is lined with Japanese maples, so it's beautiful.

Martyr Yastutaro’s words to Takagi Senemon and Moriyama Jinzaburo “ I am not lonely at all in this Sanjakuro for just after midnight a lady appears, clothed in a blue gown and wearing a blue veil just like yhe image of Santa Maria. She tells me stories so I am not lonely at all. But pls do not tell anyone about this while I am still alive.” The Blessed Virgin appeared to martyr Yasutaro every night from the seventh to the ninteength of January in the second year of Meiji (1869)

It's not so bad to the church, but if you try to go through to the Monument of Bliss, the ground becomes quite rough. On the way back from the Monument of Bliss, if you go down just before the bridge, you will come out to the temple, and the path there is firmer and easier to walk on. Mr. Sakazaki changed his name, but I heard that the graves of the Kamei clan, who joined the club after him, were located on this site, but I really didn't know. Mr. Kamei also served as the lord of the Tsuwano domain and studied at a Yoroikan in Tsuwano. I don't know the history of this temple, but since the Kamei clan's grave is located here, it must be a temple connected to the Kamei clan. The other buildings and gardens also seem to have historical value, and the paintings on the sliding doors in the auditorium are very interesting. This is definitely the type of sake that was selected for the Delicious Sake Award in a Wine Glass. Junmai Daiginjo is even more drinkable, which is dangerous in a sense. Hazekura is a hidden gem that offers an authentic experience of traditional Japanese culture. Nestled in a serene location, this charming establishment provides guests with the opportunity to immerse themselves in local customs and cuisine. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, making it perfect for those seeking tranquility away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Visitors can enjoy beautifully crafted dishes made from fresh, seasonal ingredients that showcase the region's culinary heritage.
(Translated by Google) There is a sign on the front that says ``Hazekura Iwataya Kawada Furniture Store.'' "Reference Room Hasekura" is in the same building. Hasekura? What did I think... ``Haze'' means hazenoki. It's that tree that when I was a child, I said that my face would swell if I played under the goby. The wax that can be obtained from the goby fruit is the material used to make Japanese candles. It seems to be called ``Hazekura'' because it was the warehouse where the goby was kept. This time I only went inside the attached store, but apparently there is a museum on the second floor containing books by the Tsuwano feudal lords and samurai.

The Kuwabara Shisei photo museum showcases the works of Fuminari Kuwabara, a news photographer from Tsuwano Town. (Translated by Google) I expected him to be a versatile photographer, but he turned out to be a news photographer. In fact, he has left behind works that are unusual for people to take, and it feels like he is stepping into the lives of the local people and photographing them. Therefore, there is a sense of being there, and it is easy to convey the situation from the photos. By the way, Mr. Fuminari Kuwabara is a news photographer from Tsuwano Town. His real name is Fumiaki Kuwabara. He graduated from Tokyo University of Agriculture and has won numerous awards. He won the 1965 Kodansha Photography Award and his work was published in Korea, Taiyo, and Weekly Asahi. Received the 2003 Donggang Prize (Korea). The award-winning works are wide-ranging. He has also had solo exhibitions in various places. 1979 Solo exhibition (Vietnam), Ginza Nikon Salon, Tokyo, etc. There are also a wide variety of solo exhibitions. Also, at the entrance of this museum, there was also an article about past photos about Mr. Fuminari Kuwabara. Currently in Vietnam until October 18, 2023. Photos related to this are displayed. Because of the emphasis on Vietnam, you might think that there are a lot of press photos related to Asia, but in the past there have also been press photos taken about the former Soviet Union. Soba noodle shop
Chishanoki is a soba restaurant located near Tsuwano Station, offering delicious juwari soba noodles made solely from buckwheat. The menu features handmade dishes such as konyaku sashimi and a special vegan option. The owner grows chestnuts used in the dishes, providing a taste unique to Tsuwano. The seasonal menu is bilingual and provides excellent descriptions of the offerings.
A wonderful local treasure. Apparently in addition to being a Soba shop, this place doubles as a Chestnut Cafe. Lots of Vegetarian/Vegan options and Souvenirs and English descriptions of the available options. The owner sources all of his ingredients locally and even uses local sea salt and water in order to get extra nutrients into his dishes. I had the Chestnut icecream and his specially made Konyaku (apparently he uses a traditional method that gives it a special texture and prevents it from developing a smell). Highly recommend to any travelers who need a place to stop for a light meal, local delicacies, or afternoon stop.

(Translated by Google) There aren't many lunch options in downtown Tsuwano. Maybe there is no demand for it because you can do sightseeing in about half a day. I found this store under such circumstances. This is a shop that sells Juwari Soba and sweets made with chestnuts. Inside the store, various posters and explanations are pasted everywhere. Since the chestnut rice was only available until November, I ordered a set of juwari zaru soba and fried rice balls. The tea is legume tea, which is often found in this region. The store is run by an old lady. A little while after I placed my order, I came back to check on it again, which was a courtesy. Zaru soba comes with two pieces of sashimi konnyaku. This konnyaku also seems to be homemade, and unlike regular konnyaku, it contains air bubbles. It has no smell or harsh taste, and can be eaten as sashimi with ponzu sauce. Juwari soba has a slightly greenish color and tastes sweet even when eaten as is without dipping sauce. It's a pity that they don't do large servings. There are two grilled rice balls (I forgot to take a photo!) that are crispy grilled on one side. One was seasoned with sesame salt, and the other was miso, but I was surprised to find that it was wasabi miso. Come to think of it, wasabi is also a specialty. I also bought a chestnut yokan as a souvenir. This yokan is made only with chestnuts, string kanten, and sugar, without using azuki beans. It's a bit pricey, but it looked interesting so I bought it. Other stores also sold items wrapped in bamboo skin, but I decided to use a simple paper box packaging. I was supposed to be able to use a credit card, but the terminal was malfunctioning, so I paid in cash.

It was lunchtime when I visited so I thought it might be busy, but when I went through the noren curtain, there was no one there so I was able to sit down right away. The waitress (an older woman) handed me the menu and gave me a detailed explanation of the dishes. She recommended something called sprouted soba noodles, which you don't see very often at other restaurants, so I ordered that. The bowl arrived a few minutes later, and when I tried it, it was filling and had a decent flavor. Depending on the season, they sometimes serve chestnut rice, so I recommend checking with the restaurant before visiting. We left Osaka as a couple without breakfast. We had decided that we would eat soba here when we arrived in Tsuwano and then go around Tsuwano. Thanks to the owner's kindness, we were able to eat 100% buckwheat soba. I was impressed by the texture and taste of the soba for the first time. My wife had it with salt and I had it with soba soup as the owner's advice. I wanted to eat 100% buckwheat soba with a strong soba aroma again, so I said "I'll come again tomorrow," but unfortunately it was closed on Tuesdays. I've eaten soba here and there, but the soba at this "farm restaurant" was something else. I just got back to Osaka. I haven't organized my photos yet, so I'm just writing this, but I wanted to say thank you as soon as possible, so I'll just write it. Thank you very much. However, because I visited during lunch time and because the restaurant was small, there weren't many people who could enter, so it took about an hour to wait in line and finish eating. Apparently, the amount of soba noodles is small and they don't serve large portions. However, the staff at the store were very kind and pleasant. Udon noodle restaurant
Tsurube is a charming udon restaurant nestled on Ushiroda street, surrounded by an array of noodle and okonomiyaki eateries. The unique ambiance is enhanced by the owner's past as a Yabusame archer, with walls adorned with vintage photographs and remnants of wooden targets. This cozy spot specializes in various types of udon, including their standout curry udon, which boasts a delightful tanginess and just the right amount of spice.
FULL ENGLISH MENU available! A small little Udon place, with seats at the counter, table or on tatami. The curry udon was very good, with just a little bit of spiciness, but not to much. It is a small place, cozy with big portions and reasonable prices. The master has a strict face, but don't be fooled, he is just concentrating on his work, he is a nice fella. :-)
