Turpan in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Turpan, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Turpan is an oasis city in the Turpan Depression, known for its dramatic desert landscapes, traditional grape vineyards, and ancient Silk Road heritage. Visitors can explore well-preserved ruins such as Jiaohe and Gaochang, which showcase the region’s long history as a trading and cultural crossroads. The ingenious Karez underground irrigation system, Emin Minaret, and nearby Flaming Mountains add to its distinct historical and natural appeal. Turpan’s extreme climate also produces famously sweet grapes and raisins that are central to local food culture.
With favorites like Turpan Museum, Red Rose Restaurant, and Ancient City of Jiaohe, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Red Rose Restaurant so you can get the best taste of Turpan while you’re here. Park
Kanerjing Paradise, also known as Chop Well, is a classic scenic spot in Turpan that showcases the ancient karez irrigation system. With a history of over 2,000 years, this engineering marvel demonstrates the ingenuity of ancient people who used vertical shafts and underground channels to collect water from the Tianshan Mountains for agriculture in desert areas. Visitors can learn about the excavation operations and see actual culverts while gaining knowledge about the operation methods for grape trees.
Interesting place. Teaches about how the community made and used water channels to improve their way of living. It has many scenes depicting how life was back then. They still have the water channels. Take good care of them. You will also learn about their grape growing. Many places still grow the grapes and have drying structures. You will see them as you drive around town also.
Norma H — Google review
The place is small, yet very interesting. It exhibits both the model and real Kanerjing tunnels and wells.

Amazing to see how civilization at that time has the ability to channel water from the mountains to dry land for cultivation.

Very informative and engineering marvel of the ancient Chinese who try to get water for survival. The wells system underground is amazing.

Ancient Ruins
Historic Sites
The Ancient City of Jiaohe, located just 10 miles from Turpan, is a remarkable archaeological site that dates back 2,000 years. Situated on a leaf-shaped plateau between two river valleys, this historical city served as the capital of the Jushi or Gushi Kingdom during China's Tang Dynasty period. The well-preserved ruins offer insights into ancient earthen community life and are accessible by renting a car and hiring a local guide.
It is a big Ancient City, the Visitor Center located at the entrance has all the interesting photos ,videos and displays on the history of this City. Next we took about 20 mins bus ride, arriving at the Ancient City Ruins entrance . There is a big signboard illustrating the strategic local on all the buildings in this Ancient City, surrounded by 2 rivers. Walking along the road , we could see ancient walls, private residences of officials Buddhist temples ,pagodas and cemeteries. It took us around 2 hours to walk through the ruins of this stunning site full of forgotten history with lots of photographic opportunities. The architecture is quite interesting , looks like the inhabitants dug into the mud to create their dwellings and probably slowly eroded by the weather, some of carved out rocks have looks like some animal formations. Nevertheless the site is still a well preserved ancient city , it is better to have a local guide who could readily explain whatever abandoned ruins you are looking at !!
Susan C — Google review
Fantastic. Unlike many "historic sites" in the area, I don't believe this is a reconstruction or mockup, as some reviewers have claimed. This is the real deal - it wouldn't be on the UNESCO world heritage list otherwise. It isn't in a good condition, but that is due to its age of more than 2000 years rather than a lack of preservation efforts. In fact, the tourist infrastructure there strikes a good balance between allowing people to see the majority of the ruins and minimising erosion. Make sure to get the ancient city ticket for 70 yuan rather than the ancient village (which is a mockup and not worth the extra 35 yuan).
Daniel G — Google review
Well preserved ruins of an important town along the silk road You have to use your imagination to envisage the ancient town vibrancy during the olden days when traders from east and west passed thru this town
Jason L — Google review
This tourist attraction is the ruins of an ancient city called Jiao He. Because of the dry weather, these mud buildings have been preserved. It was interesting trying to imagine what life must have been like then. This place is hot and dry. Tourists must come prepared with skin lotion, caps, and umbrellas. Bring water. There is a sort of cafeteria at the entrance/ exit where they sell beverages. The freshly blended honey dew and watermelon juice is so refreshing.
Andrew Y — Google review
Not worth it at all. It is a ruined ruin...i.e. it is ruined completely as a place of any authenticity. As is the domestic norm, it has been "recreated" into somewhat of a theme park. Not restored, no. Rebuilt. You're also not permitted to go anywhere other than where the four foot path takes you. Absolutely worthless by any aesthetic, archaeological, cultural or historic metric. Don't go; though should you ignore the advice, the entrance fee is 70.00 (though you can buy a Turpan ticket that grants you access to most of the "archeological" sites in the area, which is much cheaper). There is a scam "ancient" village too...it's really an absolute joke that is an additional 35, should you want to throw some extra money in the trash. The only redeeming factor were the staff, who were mostly all friendly. This was low season and it was very quiet in the afternoon, though there were NO drinks available as all the machines and stalls were abandoned or closed for the season. Staff kindly allowed us to refill our bottles with their own water. I reiterate...this is not worth it for any real traveller.
Jonathon D — Google review
Nice and scenic historic site. Ticket pricing is a bit confusing, but I recommend asking to buy the 70 yuan ticket only for the historic site. If you are able to walk it’s a pleasant 20 minute walk each way from the visitor centre. Otherwise it’s 25 yuan for shuttle bus.
Sam B — Google review
Very interesting place, the area itself is so big, at least need 2-3 hours to explore the whole city. There is 2 stops from the entrance, and you have to ride a car. First is 古村, the main attraction is 古城.

Specialty Museums
The Turpan Museum is a modern three-story building that offers free entry and houses an extensive collection of artifacts, including real mummies. The museum provides insight into the culture and life of the people in Turpan and Xinjiang, showcasing the impact of travel and trade along the Silk Road on cultural exchange. It's located in an olive-shaped intermountain basin surrounded by mountains, offering visitors a unique perspective on the region's history and heritage.
Free entry. Bags have to be put inside locker at first floor. Air conditioned. There are numerous artifacts including mummies (real mummy) which I find interesting. The museum gives me different kind of exposure to the culture and life of people living around Turpan and Xinjiang as a whole. It opens my mind on the way people travel and trade using the silk road and the resultant spread of culture along the route. I'm writing this review two years after visiting this museum which gives me a deep and profound memory. Very impressed with the museum and I highly recommend this museum in your itinerary.
Chow P — Google review
Good experience. Lots of amazing history. Learned a lot. Not very big so you can complete the entire museum in just over an hour. Staff are friendly but watching over the guests carefully. Gift shops are nice. Some good deals for souvenirs.
Philip C — Google review
I'll grant it an extra star since it was free, though you need a passport to enter. It is closed on Mondays and open from 10:30am the remainder of the week. Nearly (maybe even all) everything inside is a fake reproduction. There is no detailed or valid information on most of the exhibits. It is pretty poor for a regional museum and without the free entry I'd generously rate it 2/5. The staff were friendly.

Huoyan Mountain, also known as the Flaming Mountain, is steeped in rich cultural history and folklore, particularly from the famous novel "Journey to the West" by Wu Cheng'en during the Ming Dynasty. According to legend, this stunning landscape was created when the Monkey King caused chaos in Heaven, leading to charcoals raining down on what is now Turpan Basin.
The Flaming Mountain is make famous by a Novel “Journey to the West” legend written by writer Wu Cheng’en during Ming Dynasty. In the novel, one of the three apprentices Monkey King stirred up trouble in the Heaven Palace and kicked over one furnace used for making immortality pills making charcoals fell off the sky scattering around the Turpan Basin where the Flaming Hill now situated. There is a giant thermometer also look like the Monkey King’s Ruyi Jingu Bang which reads 48 degree C , can be found in this site, attracting a number of tourists from around the world. Infact the mountains are impressive to see as it is quite unusual. All barren and brownish red. My friend told me if its on a sunny day, one could see the glory of the all-red mountain. The scene in this area is just like a desert, no vegetation, only sandstone. Few bronze statues from Journey to the West, such as Iron Fan Princess, Bull Demon King & Monkey King attracted many tourists, crowding & touching them to pose for photographs. When the place is crowded , it is very hard to shoot a decent picture. In my observation , there are several tourist attractions such as camel rides, donkey ride & 4 wheels motorcycle . Imagine riding under the heat !!!! Detailed explanations of the history of Flaming Mountain, its geology as well as the legend with all the characters such as Monkey King, Pig and Monk are displayed in its museum. Last but not least, I supposed the only interesting thing found here is the world largest thermometer which looks like the Monkey King’s weapon – Ruyi Jingu Bang. !!!!

As the name, Flaming Mountain, suggests, this tourist destination is terribly hot. It is the location for the fable, 'Journey to the West'. The air is very dry and very hot. Tourists are advised not to stay out in the sun for a long stretch of time. Once again, tourists need to be prepared for this heat - suntan lotion, cap, umbrella, and drink a lot of water.
Andrew Y — Google review
Ask the locals, they are crazy about this place because a TV show about a legendary story of “Journey to the West” was shot here. Many Chinese from all over come here to visit this place, extremely touristy though- and there are airplane rides, camel rides, ATV rides and so on. You’d probably spend an hour or two here, and that’ll be enough.
Seth L — Google review
A place to be appreciated as a wonder of nature with its red hot mountain ranges and surrounding landscapes. However it is too commercialised with places such as the giant thermometer being cordoned off to charge visitors for photos taking. This prevented others from having photos and getting a good view of the exhibit.
Eric C — Google review
Super hot location due to zero altitude. You also get to see statues of characters from the Journey to the West.
A S — Google review
Busy, packed with tourists spot, with plenty commercial attractions for them, such as camel riding, quads, helicopters etc. In spite of irritating touristy chaos i would still recommend having a look. I have walked bit further and enjoyed mountains totally alone. Be prepared for extreme heat. Water and suitable head cover are the must.
Anna S — Google review
Barran, eroded sandstone ridges. Famous as it is linked one of the locations in the Chinese classic, “Journey to the West”, where Sun Wukong and his companions encounter Princess Iron Fan. As a result, plenty of sculptures of these characters for tourists. Nothing much to see. If you’re a photographer suggest coming in the morning or evening when you should be able to capture some fantastic shots as the ridges changes colour.

The Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves is a remarkable complex of 77 caves adorned with murals of Buddha, dating back to the 5th to 14th centuries. Nestled in a river gorge within the Flaming Mountains near Turpan, this site holds great historical and cultural significance. The name 'Bezeklik' means Place of Paintings in Uyghur, reflecting the stunning 11th-century murals that represent a pinnacle of Uyghur Buddhist art.
Cultural Buddha site from 6-7 BC. Some areas had been enlarged until 12 Century. Larger parts of the paintings had been stolen and sold to European Museums. Ideal visiting time in the morning or late afternoon.
Andreas W — Google review
Expensive for the few open caves you're allowed to see. No pictures allowed inside the caves. Most of the paintings inside the caves are damaged or destroyed so you're seeing mostly ruins. Great views of the surrounding mountains but you don't need to visit here to see them. This tourist trap is avoidable.
Philip C — Google review
Extremely hot on the day we visited this place. Not much to see. It's a sad story that people from western countries stole so many important historical pieces from China. Hope to see those pieces return to where they belong.
Mieow J — Google review
The Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves, while historically significant, can be quite disappointing for visitors. Many of the original murals have suffered extensive damage over the centuries due to vandalism and theft, leaving only a fraction of their former glory. Most caves are closed to the public. Additionally, the lack of informative signage makes it challenging to appreciate the historical context without a guide. Overall, while the caves hold cultural importance, the visitor experience leaves much to be desired.
Yamine B — Google review
This is an AAA attraction. Not much to see, the picture in the cave is faded, but the landscape is interesting
