If you only have 1 day to spend in Shimogo-machi, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Shimogo-machi is best known for Ōuchi-juku, a beautifully preserved Edo-period post town with thatched-roof buildings that line an old highway, offering a rare look at historic rural Japan. Nearby natural attractions include Tō-no-Hetsuri, a striking set of weathered cliffs along the Okawa River, and several hot spring areas such as Yunokami Onsen. The town also serves as a scenic gateway to the wider Aizu region, with local specialties like negi-soba (soba eaten with a green onion stalk) adding to its traditional charm.
With favorites like Misawaya Soba Restaurant, Ouchi-juku View Point, and Asanuma Shokudo, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Asanuma Shokudo and Yamatoya so you can get the best taste of Shimogo-machi while you’re here. Historic Walking Areas
Ouchijuku is a well-preserved post town with traditional thatched-roof Edo-period buildings lining its main street. The Ouchijuku Honjin, once a luxurious inn for high-ranked feudal lords, is now open as a museum showcasing the daily life of samurai and travelers from the 1600s. Visitors can explore the elegant interior of this historic inn and learn about Edo period tools and artifacts at the Ouchijuku Townscape Exhibition Hall.
the famous spring onion soba was so famous. I had to wait 2 hours to get to eat one of the most famous soba places in that area. Although there are plenty of other soba places for you. And the water here was so clean and cold in summer.

Visiting Ouchi-juku on a weekday was wonderful because there were few tourists, allowing for a peaceful experience. The famous observation deck offers a stunning panoramic view of the entire village, with its iconic thatched roofs and surrounding scenery. I also enjoyed trying the local specialty, negi soba—soba noodles eaten using a green onion stalk instead of chopsticks—which was a unique and delicious cultural experience. Overall, it’s a charming historic village with beautiful views and tasty traditional food.

A pleasant way to spend an hour. It's one main street with tourist shops and soba restaurants. Theres some small shrines and a photo spot up some step old steps. Always crowded on the weekend with a lot of tour buses. Some local crafts and produce. It can be quite cold. No entrance fee but there is a parking fee of ¥500.

Ouchijuku is one of the most charming and atmospheric historical towns I have visited in Japan. The entire street is lined with beautifully preserved thatched-roof houses, and walking through it feels like stepping back into the Edo period. The town has been carefully maintained and still carries the quiet charm of an old post station from the 1600s. There are small eateries, souvenir shops, and local crafts along the main path, and the surrounding scenery adds to the sense of stepping into a living museum. It is a great place to explore slowly and enjoy the history, culture, and traditional architecture of the Aizu region. A very memorable stop that is worth the visit.

11/25/23🍂🌨️🛖 Ōuchi-juku is a must-visit if you’re interested in Japan’s old-town charm. The preserved thatched-roof houses and historic atmosphere make it feel like you’ve stepped into the Edo period. There are plenty of shops selling local goods, crafts, and souvenirs, as well as restaurants—especially famous for their handmade soba noodles. The area is well set up for visitors, with a parking lot nearby and easy walking access to all the main spots. A great place to explore, take photos, and enjoy a traditional Japanese experience!

Interesting traditional thatched houses. A more modest place compared to Shirakawa-go. Just a single street and one museum house - 250 Yen entry for adults.

Observation deck
Ouchi-juku View Point offers a glimpse of traditional Japanese scenery amidst the natural surroundings across all four seasons, with winter particularly standing out for its stunning snowscape. The district is home to well-preserved thatch-roof buildings and serves as a post station along the historic Aizu-Nishi Kaido highway from the Edo Period.
A spot height point provides a panoramic view of the surrounding villages. There are numerous stairs to climb, requiring careful and strenuous effort, but the view is worth it.

Ouchijuku is such a cute little town from the Edo period. We spent hours just strolling around, exploring all the small shops, buying souvenirs and visiting the town museum. Had some ice cream and enjoyed a traditional soba meal in one of the cosy restaurants. The viewpoint is also worth the walk – lovely views over the thatched rooftops. A really good experience overall.

The approach path was still covered in snow in mid-February, but if you go under the Sanmon gate and take a detour to the left, you can get to the main hall. The stamp pad is still the same as it was in 2013, and the ink is almost gone. This time, I used the time while waiting for the train to visit the shrine on foot from Yunokami Onsen Station. The view itself is very beautiful, and if you look in the opposite direction from the parking lot, it's even better. I thought it would be nice if you could get a new goshuin stamp soon. Tō-no-Hetsuri is a breathtaking scenic spot, especially stunning during the autumn foliage season. The unique rock formations along the river create a dramatic view, and when the leaves turn red and gold, the landscape feels almost magical. Highly recommended to visit in fall for the most beautiful scenery.

A very small scale tourist spot. Just a bridge with the cliff stones and a worship place. At the moment, the view was stunning with the fall foliage. Parkings were available on site. The closer to the bridge, the more expensive was the parking fee ranging from ¥100-300. I parked closest and paid the fee. The keeper gave me a receipt and alleged that full reimbursement for purchase in his shop. I did but later discovered it was a trick. Price of the product bought was marked up ¥300.

Yamatoya is a renowned soba restaurant situated in a nostalgic townscape. One of their specialties is the Negi-Soba, which comes with an entire stalk of green onion that you use to eat the soba. The restaurant also offers insights into the origin and history of this unique dish. Visitors have praised the generous portion size and flavorful soup stock, making for a satisfying meal. We chose this restaurant as our lunch spot and we got what we've wanted: traditional negi soba with the onion spoon. It was very good but the lack of something like fish or meat made it a bit plain. But I guess that is how they have been eating negi soba for hundreds of years. The people working there were lovely and gave us soba tea and refreshing cold water for free which was great.
Gladius T — Google review
(Translated by Google) It was a shop with a very nice atmosphere. Since I visited Ouchi-juku on a weekday, many of the shops were closed, but I was relieved to see that this shop, the birthplace of green onion soba, was open. The table under the eaves in front of the entrance was occupied, so I ate alone in the tatami room indoors. Above the lintel is a medal of honor! ! Furthermore, there are various certificates of cultural property on display, which makes you realize that it is a historically important building. That said, there was a TV and modern home appliances, so it was a strange space where old history and modernity were mixed together. I thought it would feel like my grandma's house, but since you can see the whole store from the souvenir corner at the entrance, I was a little disappointed that it didn't feel very relaxing (lol) The most important thing is green onion soba, but since I came on a group bike tour before, I wasn't able to enjoy it very slowly, but this time I was traveling alone, so I was able to enjoy it thoroughly. So, when I talk about green onion soba, people often ask me, "Isn't it spicy?" That's what it means. No, it's really spicy. Therefore, the trick is to eat it with soba while biting it a little at a time. If you go too far, you will regret it. The portion size seems to be a little more than one serving, but since it's soba, you can eat it easily. As for the price, it's quite a good price for soba, but as mentioned above, the amount of soba was large, so it didn't feel that expensive. Overall, I am very satisfied with the atmosphere. However, it gets very crowded on Saturdays and Sundays, so I recommend coming on weekdays. Since the surrounding area is also mountainous, we have no choice but to eat at Ouchi-juku, and if it's crowded, it will take quite a while to eat (as was the case the last time we toured).

(Translated by Google) They open early in the morning. This is a great place to go to Ouchijuku first thing in the morning and eat negi soba. The soba is delicious, so if you don't mind, you'll be satisfied. In fact, I highly recommend it. I head to Ouchijuku around 8:30am, and since there are hardly any people around, I can take my time sightseeing, then have negi soba for breakfast at Yamatoya. By the time I finish eating, some of the souvenir shops, although not all, are open.

(Translated by Google) Overall review: Let's eat while watching tourists from the window. When you think of Ouchi-juku, you think of green onion soba. Chusonji's Wanko Soba, Ouchi-juku's Negi Soba. It's a gourmet dish that you'll be missing out on if you don't try. Ouchi-juku has a famous green onion soba restaurant near the entrance, but I definitely prefer Yamatoya. This is because you can eat while watching people come to buy small items. In the green onion soba situation, I had to be strong enough to eat one thick green onion, but I feel like I have become healthier. After Ouchi-juku, we took a quick run to Tsuruga Castle. It's also fun to ride a pleasure boat on Lake Inawashiro. Visit in the morning and enjoy the green onion power all day long! [I looked into it] Origin of green onion soba There is a theory that in the past, ``cutting'' green onions was considered bad luck because they were used for celebrations or as gifts to the Tokugawa Shogun, so there is a theory that ``cutting'' green onions was used as is without cutting them. In 1643, Masayuki Hoshina, the fourth son of Hidetada Tokugawa, was promoted to lord of the Aizu domain, following Takato (Nagano) and Yamagata. Masayuki was known to be a soba lover, and is said to have encouraged soba makers to popularize soba when he transferred to Aizu. In addition to Aizu, Masayuki is said to have popularized soba in Yamagata, where he ruled as the feudal lord, and in Edo during his time as an assistant to the fourth shogun, Ietsuna. Well, it was a historical food.

(Translated by Google) I visited with my dog. The outdoor seats were well ventilated and cool, and the view of the streets of Ouchijuku from our seats created a great atmosphere. The negi soba was a bit spicy with the green onions, but very delicious. I'm glad I found a great soba restaurant on my first visit to Ouchijuku. I'm thinking about trying a different soba restaurant next time I visit. (Translated by Google) I had Ouchi-juku's famous negi soba! The thatched-roof house, decorated with ornaments, exudes a sense of everyday life. It appears to be used as both a store and a residence, preserving the Edo-period streetscape. There's no air conditioning, but you can stave off the heat with a hand fan.^^ Cold negi soba (1,200 yen) Ramune (150 yen) They showed me how to eat it. You scoop up the noodles with the tip of a curved leek and slurp them up by bringing your mouth close to the bowl. I was able to eat it fairly well, but I'm clumsy, so I started eating with disposable chopsticks halfway through. I nibbled on the leek as a condiment, and it added a nice sweetness to the dish.^^ The soba was also quite delicious! Thank you for the meal. Soba noodle shop
Misawaya Soba Restaurant offers an authentic Japanese dining experience in a traditional, thatched building with floor seating on tatami mats. The menu may not be extensive, but the food is great, especially the buckwheat noodle soup and tempura. Eating soba with fresh green onions adds a unique flavor to the dish. Additionally, they serve hot soup after finishing the soba and offer options like traditional fish and raw egg with rice.
Super delicious! Their recommended noodle soup with green onion (very fresh) in cool is super nice, fried veg and fish are excellent as well, and snack red bean mochi is good. Btw, the traditional table heating inside provides nice experience to seat for meal. Like👍

I visited Misawaya at Ouchi-juku on a weekday and was pleasantly surprised that there was no waiting time to be seated. I tried their famous Takato soba, which was both delicious and very filling—the regular size was more than enough. The traditional atmosphere added to the great dining experience.

I don’t really recommend this soba noodle. Firstly, two male waiters laughed at me without any reasons. I really felt awkward. Secondly, I don’t think the soba noodle worths ¥1320 because it only contains noodles and a giant spring onion. Driving long way here and eating this noodle is just a waste of time and money.

It was my mistake not to know that October is the peak of tourism. 80 minutes was too long for me...But I am appreciated beautiful garden. I'll be back!!

Really autentic Japanese experience. Tatami floor seating, and you are greeted with tea and veggies. Not an extensive menu but the good is great. Try the tempura. Eating with an onion is comical but really adds flavour to the soba. Both hot and cold soba options. The staff were super friendly and service was quick.

(Translated by Google) I stopped by during a trip. The owner of the shop was very nice and answered questions like the amount of soba when deciding what to order. I ate a mini rice bowl with duck bamboo shoots and sauce cutlet, and the soba noodles had a great aroma. The cutlet in the sauce katsudon was about 2cm thick and the coating was thin and crispy. I don't think there are many shops specializing in tonkatsu that offer this level of quality. Since it was around noon, I looked for a soba restaurant and found ``Soba Restaurant Yu'' along the national highway. The parking lot was full, but there was an empty table and we were seated right away. After looking through the menu, I ordered tempura soba (cold), which was served in a relatively short time. The tempura is all crispy, and the sweet potato is sticky. And it was very delicious. As for the soba, it was also delicious, with just the right amount of firmness and texture, and I was completely satisfied (^^) It was a good store that made me want to come again!
