Kulon Progo offers a quieter, more rural side of Yogyakarta, with views over the Menoreh Hills and villages surrounded by rice fields and plantations. Travelers come for outdoor activities such as hiking to scenic viewpoints like Kalibiru, boating at Sermo Reservoir, and rafting on the Progo River. The southern coast adds variety with beaches such as Glagah, known for its lagoon and breakwater scenery, while local markets and small roadside stalls give a glimpse of everyday Javanese life.
With favorites like Kebun Teh Nglinggo, Sate & Tongseng Pak Panto, and Tumpeng Menoreh, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Sate & Tongseng Pak Panto so you can get the best taste of Kulon Progo while you’re here. Borobudur Temple is a renowned 9th-century Buddhist monument located in the Kedu Valley, Central Java. It is considered the largest Buddhist temple globally and was built during the reign of the Syailendra Dynasty. The main stupa is constructed in three tiers around a natural hill, featuring a pyramidal base with five square terraces, a cone-shaped trunk with circular platforms, and a monumental stupa at the top.
A really awesome experience. The infrastructure around the temple is pretty top notch, roomy clean, modern. The grounds are beautiful and well kept. The temple itself is simply awesome. A bit like Angkor Wat, but obviously not the same. As of September 2025 you can climb the structure all the way to the top. Not too crowded, but there are lots of tourists, obviously.
Bobby C — Google review
Borobudur Temple is absolutely breathtaking — truly one of the most awe-inspiring places I’ve visited in Indonesia. The scale, detail, and history behind this temple are just incredible. Walking up through the different terraces as the sun rises, surrounded by mist and the sound of birds, is something that feels almost spiritual. Every level reveals new carvings and stories, and the view from the top is unforgettable. That said, the guided tour could have been better. Our guide was kind and enthusiastic, but unfortunately very difficult to follow — his explanations were rushed and not very clear, so most of the group ended up wandering off and exploring on our own. It’s a shame, because with a bit more structure and clear storytelling, the tour could have really brought the temple’s history to life. Even so, Borobudur is a must-visit. Whether or not you get a great guide, the atmosphere and beauty of the site more than make up for it. If you visit, I’d recommend either reading a bit about the temple’s background beforehand or using an audio guide, so you can better appreciate what you’re seeing. A truly remarkable place — just wish the guided experience matched the magic of the monument itself. 🌅

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 5/5 — An Unforgettable Experience at Borobudur Temple Borobudur Temple is truly a masterpiece of history, culture, and spirituality. Visiting this ancient wonder feels like stepping into another world. The intricate stone carvings, the peaceful atmosphere, and the sheer scale of the monument are breathtaking. Watching the sunrise from the top is an experience I’ll never forget—the sky slowly lighting up the surrounding mountains and villages creates a magical moment of calm and beauty. The temple grounds are well-maintained, and the guides are knowledgeable, helping bring the stories behind each panel to life. Whether you love history, architecture, photography, or simply want a peaceful place to reflect, Borobudur is absolutely worth the trip. It’s one of those rare places that leaves a lasting impression on your heart. Highly recommended!
Goran R — Google review
This is a must see. Purchase your tickets online closing the convenient time.slot as well as the option of going to the top. You will be assigned for a tour guide inside the temple and he will explain all the story about it giving as well some details from what u see. It is really worth visiting knowing All the history and to see all nice views and also for nice photos. Electric cars are punctual and on on time to get you from entrance to the temple entrance. There is as well a big souvenirs shops market at that area. Highly recommended but during the day it can be very hot and sunny so bring an umbrella and/or hat and sunscreen. And prepare yourself to be given a slipper and put your shoes in a bag (they take care of everything at entrance and it is included in the climbing ticket).
Assala J — Google review
Good to be back to history — such an iconic place that always feels timeless. The area is well-organized and clean. To reach the temple, you can choose between taking a paid buggy ride or the free electric shuttle — both eco-friendly options, which is great. The only downside is the way out — it feels a bit like a maze since you have to walk through a long souvenir market before exiting. Still, it’s worth the visit for the beauty and serenity of Borobudur itself. ✨
Ivy P — Google review
Highly recommend to visit here. Everything is included with 455k entrance fee. Water, slippers to Protect the temple and a guide is included. They schedule by group per hour. Organized and helpful guides. You can also asked the guards for pictures they know how to take it.

Borobudur Temple is truly an amazing destination. I really enjoyed the tranquil atmosphere and the beautiful scenery here. The facilities are also very modern and well-managed. However, I found a navigation issue. The area is so vast that we had a hard time finding our way, and the signposts from the parking lot were not very clear. My suggestion is that it would be very helpful if the management could provide map brochures in the parking area or at the ticket counter. That way, visitors can explore more easily without getting lost. Overall, it was an unforgettable experience!
Adam J — Google review
Borobudur Temple was on my bucket list. And I made to visit it. Some pros: - absolutely amazing art and experience (of course not comparable to Angkor Wat- lets say nothing can beat AW) - tickets for 15:30 actually are for sunset, and this is best time to enjoy the sun extracting colors from the temple. - we bought tickets for Temple Structure, which allows to climb to the top, and include buggy ride. Are 40k IDR more expensive - ticket includes shoes (kind of bamboo flip flops), and bottle of water CONS: - overpriced! 455k IDR (25$) because you’re foreigner (75k IDR for local) - a lot of hustle and bustle around for taxi, souvenirs etc - guide was enough - EXIT is a NIGHTMARE, as you need to get thorough maze of really pushy sellers, which makes me panic to get out of there! Outside- another group pushing for taxi, some souvenirs. Please respect our „NO thank you” boundaries, as we- foreigners- are respecting your prices, places and culture. Whatever good impressions I had, they got lost with going through exit. TIPS: 1. Only Structure Tickets, buy online in advance 2. Preferably entrance at 15:30 3. Take extra water with you 4. Keep calm and move on through maze of shops to get to the desired exit.

Gua Maria Sendangsono is a Catholic cave shrine and holy spring located in a religious complex featuring a large Virgin Mary statue. The site is known for its stunning architecture and religious significance, drawing visitors seeking serenity, meditation, and self-reflection. It offers a peaceful retreat from the hustle of daily life, with vendors contributing to its maintenance. While access may be challenging for some due to the mountainous terrain and numerous stairs, it remains a silent sanctuary for prayer and peace.
Gua Maria Sendangsono is a truly special place that has profoundly impacted my life. As a person of faith who prefers a more personal spiritual journey, I was drawn to this serene location without any prior intention. Since then, I've returned often to experience its unique energy and connection to the divine. I've even brought friends who were initially skeptical about spiritual matters, and they too were touched by the peaceful atmosphere and felt a sense of tranquility. They've returned multiple times seeking solace and renewal. I encourage everyone to visit this sacred place, whether you're looking for a quiet moment of reflection or a more profound spiritual experience. Simply walking the grounds or praying in your own way can open your heart and mind to the unknown. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to those who care for this beautiful place. May God bless you all.

Visiting this place twice had been a healing experience every single time and I love that my mind, body, and soul are at ease. For everyone who wants to go to this place using motorcycle, please choose the car’s route and the destination is: Pintu Utama Sendangsono (not Gua Maria Sendangsono). You’ll be given 2 or 3 routes options, I suggest you take the route from the down north.
Big G — Google review
The place is spacious and cool, perfect for praying, meditating, or just finding peace and quiet. The atmosphere is very calm and peaceful. There are many small food stalls around. The road access is actually good and there are many signs to guide you, even if there’s no signal. But be careful, there are many uphills and downhills, and the road is a bit narrow for two cars to pass. It’s also a bit winding with some small potholes. But once you arrive, it’s all worth it. A great place for spiritual trips or just to relax from the busy city life.

Pilgrims site, a place to find serenity, to refresh the soul, to meditation and self reflection. Came with all burden, distraction, and life problems to pray and hand it to creators of life. Far away from crowded, life frenzied, such a quiet place to refresh our soul and mind. Beauty and harmony can be seen from the architecture form, all came with great imagination to shape every inch, compotition and structure. Just relief and fresh everytime visiting this place. Every corner representing the art itself, touching and seeing it more like the source of fountain of life. Peoples from many background, domestic and international tourist, use to came for pray and attend the mass or just to admire it. Some to take a part for rituals the Passion of the Christ, visitors also providing with free Holy Water in plastic bottle to take away but consider the place need source to maintain its operation and preserve so it will be respectful if peoples might be spend some coin at collection box near it. Many facility are available, gazebos, toilets, restaurant, inn, souvenirs shop, local stall, grocery store, snack, ect. But mostly of restos in this place selling pork dish with loxal taste. Parking area also very large, located near the enterance gate. People also can park near the 2nd gate wich is the Quiet Zone before entering inner site but only for motorcycle not for car. All the way to 2nd gate there's locals offering their merchendise like neckles, rosary, statue, holy waters, bracelet, ect. Road to the location was wort to try, it start with good and wide road condition and end with tight careless roads that only fit for 1 car. Beware for downhill and uphill, curved path and weather condition. Not too many sign board to location, especially at rainy day the terrain condition need more attention to pass. It looks untouched by the goverment or for else reason. But don't worry for the locals was friendly and willing to help for troubles on the way. This place free to enter no need ticket or else.

Peaceful place to pray, one of top destination if goes to Jogja. Must visit place, nature feels so close and quite calm.

This place is one of amazement, religion, and awe. The architecture alone is reason to come. The religious aspect makes this place even more cherished. A symbol of unity through diversity. I spwnt so much time here enjoying the fellowship of others. The power of prayer is ever present in this place. There are a lot of vendors heading up to the Goa, but they are all very respectful. Proceeds from sales helps to maintain this beautiful gem. The staff is tolerant to all faiths.

typical of sacred place of worshiping - Catholic Rome Church. access is a bit difficult from the main road, you have to take a small or local car because the access road goes up and down the mountain. very beautiful place, but not suitable for bringing old people, too many stairs to go up and down. Hopefully easy access will be built in the coming year.

Tumpeng Menoreh is a newly opened restaurant in Yogyakarta, perched on a peak with tiered outdoor decks that offer breathtaking views of the mountains and valleys. The restaurant, designed in a hexagonal shape mirroring the traditional tumpeng, provides a peaceful escape from the city. While it can get crowded during sunrise hours, the stunning view makes it worth visiting.
Great spot for sunrise to see surrounding Magelang, Purworejo area. Easy access to go to here. There are restaurants and coffee shop to buy your snacks and drinks while you're there. Very recommended location if you are in Jogja and Magelang Purworejo area.
Paul B — Google review
Tumpeng menoreh is located in nglinggo , samigaluh kulon progo. This place is brand new area , because before that this location well known as tea plantation . To reached this place is so challanging , the main road is narrow and uphill. Need to prepare your motorbike or car on good condition. We need to focus during the trip. We met area which just clear from landslide material too. The road look likes slippery . We need to pay the ticket entrance , and there are some option . We paid the basic ones . We just walk and follow the instruction. We can see the view from the top of tumpeng menoreh , we can enjoy and take photos . The ticket is include Rp. 15.000 voucher to reduce the price food or drink if you willing to buy it. The area was good and has many spot to take picture, the toilet is clean and they are provide the praying room too.
Chandra K — Google review
I was asked to join a friend to this place. I was expecting some hiking, adventure, and nature. The road to this place is a short adventure, a small road going up the hill. At the entry gate, I was not surprised to pay for the ticket, but the amount shocked me 50.000,- per person. Ok, no problem and we continued to the parking. All was organized well, after parking we started well-made stairs and came to a well-made (helicopter) platform. There is even a kind of lift. My shoes didn't touch any soil. The place is all made for selfies, something I do not enjoy at all. But hey... that's just me! There is a view on some rooms on the other hill. On the otherside some more hills, nothing special and a lot of green, which I like. Except the harvesting of rocks and sand. In my opinion this afternoon was a big disappointment. There is bakso to eat, just normal. And there is a warung with some more traditional food, which tasted good!! Also the special teas are good. But I, as a nature lover, did not like this selfie spot at all. Waste of my money as I know many other places, with 10x cheaper tickets and 20x more nature to enjoy. Maybe my mistake, by not checking out the place before I went there. I can't give much more than 3 stars, as the food was good but the whole experience was for me a disappointment. Maybe the sunrise is better?
Gijs S — Google review
Very beautiful yet hidden place in North Jogja, only 1 hour from downtown. This place is owned by Erix Soekamti by empowering local residents. Provides a variety of foods cooked directly by local mothers. The entrance ticket price is IDR 50K, with IDR 25K being the retribution fee and IDR 25K being the meal voucher which can be exchanged at the kiosk. To get here, make sure the vehicle is in good condition, because the road you take is quite steep. My advice is to come here in the morning so you can see the scenery of hills and mountains around Jogja. Or you can go in the afternoon to enjoy the sunset on the hill.
Fajar A — Google review
Breathtaking mountains view with fresh and clean air. The restaurant is located in Magelang, yet very closed to the border of Kulonprogo and Purworejo. It takes around 40-60 minutes from Borobudur & Yogyakarta depends on one way traffic uphill approaching the restaurants. Driving SUV or MPV with high ground clearance is strongly recommended. Self service Javanese food with additional coffee and bakso/meat balls on another corner. Food is good but not really great. Entry fee IDR 50,000 including redeemable food voucher of IDR 25,000. The toilet is clean but probably need more units. Praying room is available as well.
Hadi S — Google review
#Toiletreview1020 I want to focus on reviewing the toilets in Tumpeng Menoreh. I will give a score 9/10 for the toilets, because it is really well maintained and clean. The water also great and the utilities are super helpful. I believe the tourism place like this should be expensive, because with good money the can manage the place to the next level. Whether you like it or not, the kind of concept they bring with 50k entry ticket is super worth it. You can have a meal, scenery, beverage, and of course clean and nice toilet
Hadit F — Google review
The entrance fee is 50k but with 25k voucher food. The place is really beautiful in the dawn till morning. My recommendation is to come before 7am but for sunrise get here about 5am (in bad time it can be super cloudy and u wont get sunrise). For the food for Yogyakarta standard is a bit high.
Bryan R — Google review
Great view from above, but i am not recomend to go there if you come with elder people (a lot of stairs for them, it have gondola lift but only at the very top of it) They have plan to build from below (thats what i hear from the staff), but for now you must take stairs. Food is not quite special and a bit pricey, maybe because it hard to get the ingredient to the top (one of the reason I am not giving 5 stars) Ticket is quite expensive if no promo. 50k /person for just for enter the "Tumpeng menoreh" and another 100k/person to go to "Tumpeng Ayu", for me its super expensive for only enter that place, last time I go there with promo 1 ticket for all (50k) but spend quite more on the food. (Another reason I am not giving 5 stars) The road to go there is quite extreme (not recomend for new driver) many uphill with small road. its a quite difficult when we facing others car from other direction and for go back almost all downhill, I must stop my car as my break is burning. (And another reason I am not giving 5 stars) So is it worth it? Well if you really love a great view from above either it sunrise or sunset is a good place to be, you can even stay there to wait the sunrise or sunset. If you driving your own car make sure you already have good experince especially on uphill and downhill road (I suggest SUV and MPV car). As I mention the food is quite pricey you might can bring some snack or food with you. Overall its good for 1 time experience

Kebun Teh Nglinggo is a strategically located tea plantation on a hill, offering breathtaking views and the opportunity to learn about proper tea leaf picking. The facilities are comprehensive, including a prayer room, restrooms, parking area, food and beverage stalls, accommodations, and resting places. In the morning, thick mist envelops the plantation due to its location and temperature but dissipates later to reveal vast tea fields.
Gorgeous location with a short walk through the tea plants and an opportunity to grab a cup of the local tea. The drive itself offers plenty of stunning views. You will need cash for the tickets and a driver to get there.
Jessica S — Google review
I visited here since I have a task from my lecture to analyse these places. I never knew that Yogyakarta has a tea plantation with a great view and panorama. You might see some mountains on every side. the ticket costs 15K with free tea fresh from here. The taste of the tea is quite different because you can taste bitterness at the end but still good.
Katsummi M — Google review
One of the best option to enjoy tea garden and maybe the only tea garden in Yogyakarta area? If you want to come here with car or motorcycle, please make sure that your vehicles in a prime condition, check the gas, the brake, the horn, because you will drive through very difficult road, even when the weather is raining the situation get worse because the road is slippery. But after you get there, you will find really good view (when the sky is clear, bcs sometimes it's cloudy up there). You can take a picture with the tea trees background or just enjoy some fresh air.

A different tourist attraction among others, and no others in JOGJA,, Tea plantation. You can find fresh and clean air, and sometimes a heavy fog in the afternoon, while your eyes 360 degrees can swap nice views down there, south sea, Magelang, Kulonprogo and Jogja. And you can get some warm tea or other hot drinks, same as other local snacks. A must try when you visited Jogja..
