Bantimurung Waterfall

4.5
(3982)
Bantimurung Waterfall is a stunning natural attraction that offers more than just cascading waters. The area features clear pools, nearby caves with diverse wildlife like swallows, bats, and insects. Visitors can explore the forested karst hill leading to the Dream Cave and enjoy picturesque spots for photography. Additionally, there are opportunities for recreational activities such as renting floats to slide down the waterfall.
Nice place as a weekend runaway. About 30km from capital city of Makassar, this place provides a natural sightseeing of river and waterfall. The place also infamous for its diverse butterflies (around 240 species of butterflies have been found this far). Alas, now the butterflies are rarely seen due to uncontrolled 'hunting and selling' as souvenirs by local villagers
Laly O — Google review
There are on the way to the national park was beautifully and also the waterfall itself actually beautiful just brown water and full of family visits ☺️ you can also rent a tire to slides on the waterfall for 25k. For local you paid 30-35k and tourist WITHOUT KITAS IDR 255K and with kitas same as local price ☺️🙏🏾 we were only at the first waterfall but actually it is large area, you can go more to the first waterfall from the stairs up next to the first waterfall you’ve seen if you arrived there
Aiva M — Google review
The waterfalls are pretty, yet the surrounding area is commercialized and not well cared for. We came over the weekend and found the place crowded, noisy and not anywhere near the Google reviews and pictures. Best to avoid the weekends and public holidays!

Bantimurung Waterfall is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered! From the moment I arrived, I was captivated by the sheer beauty of this natural wonder. The trek to the waterfall was a delightful adventure, with well-marked paths and breathtaking landscapes along the way. For nature enthusiasts and photographers, Bantimurung offers an abundance of picturesque spots such as colorful butterflies, and the magnificent waterfall itself. I highly recommend visiting Bantimurung Waterfall for anyone seeking a serene and awe-inspiring retreat. Whether you're an adventure seeker, a nature lover, or simply looking for a tranquil day in nature, this place will not disappoint.

The scenery is just okay, but with experience of surrounded by butterflies made the trip worthwhile. Walk until the cave entrance and you will find a small island in the lake. Go on that island and gently disturb the butterfly flocks. Ready your cameras and you'll be like in a movie!
Alwyn S — Google review
Impressive amount of water coming down the river with a larger cave at the top. Not too many butterflies. Good place for walking and enjoying the park. 30k entry fee.

Beautiful place with 4 main attractions. 1 is Helena sky bridge which is located close to first gate (when we get ticket for vehicle), just turn left from the gate. Under the bridge is butterfly sanctuary. 2 is Bantimurung waterfalls. Don't forget to bring changing clothes because you will want to play under the waterfall. 3 is butterflies. It's said October is the best time to visit as you can meet various butterflies flying around the park. 4 is Batu Cave. The inside view is amazing. It's good to hire a local guide to get lights and photographs.

Hey Indonesia! What's going on with you? 255 000 rupias for a foreign guest. Are you serious? It's nature. What I must pay for? You even can't clean up the territory nearby. We vent back without visiting. You're killing tourism on Sulawesi. Shame on you.

Bantimurung Bulusaraung National Park is a stunning destination featuring karst mountains, Prehistoric and Butterfly Caves, and the unique Bantimurung waterfall. The waterfall, with its slightly sloping 15-20 meter drop, offers picturesque photo opportunities. Known as the 'kingdom of butterflies,' the park is home to diverse butterfly species. Visitors can explore stone caves and enjoy family-friendly activities.
Bantimurung National Park is famously known as the paradise of butterflies. Here, you can find a variety of uniquely shaped butterflies that are rarely seen anywhere else. But is it only about butterflies? Absolutely not! If you're a fan of caves, this place also boasts two stunning caves—Dream Cave and Stone Cave. To explore these hidden gems, you can rent a lamp from the locals stationed at the entrance, and pay a tip for a tour guide based on your own discretion. Adventure awaits—come and explore!

I visited the BantimuruNg Waterfall which had easy access from the main road. The entrance fee is IDR30k for locals and 200k for foreigners. The area itself had various trek and spots to take pictures and marvel at the beauty of the waterfall. They also had a kayak rent, cave sightings, and butterfly museum (which was closed when I visited). You can swim freely in the area as plenty of family do that and bring your own food for a picnic inside. However, the management of the place was quite bad and many infrastructure had been decayed and dirty. If you just walk along the trek and path, it's still beautiful. Beware, there are plenty of tour guides offering their service to you. There are also freelance photographer inside that use their DSLR to take pictures od you (without your consent) and offer to transfer it to your smartphone for IDR 5k per picture. There are also some locals that demanded to give them some money because they helped to clean and maintain the place.
Vivi A — Google review
This waterfall is very beautiful and a must-see. It gets very crowded on weekends. People gather from all over the area to play and swim there. It has very beautiful nature, with high mountains and mountains full of trees. And it's still not far from Makassar, it's very close, and wherever you go, the ticket is also convenient. And also You can take food with you or order food there.⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

It was a good concept but like typical place in Indonesia, it was lack of maintenance and not clean. Good for locals to do picnic. A very good and beautiful nature that needs more love not just being abuzed to produce money for certain individuals. It's ok to visit but not a must.

I recently visited the Bantimurung Bulusaraung National Park, and it was an unforgettable experience. Located in Maros, South Sulawesi, this park is a must-visit destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers. Stunning Scenery The park's scenery is breathtaking, with lush green forests, towering limestone cliffs, and picturesque waterfalls. The Karst landscape is unique and fascinating, with its distinctive rock formations and caves. Diverse Wildlife Bantimurung Bulusaraung is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including butterflies, birds, and monkeys. I was thrilled to spot some rare species, including the Tarsier and the Macaque. Exciting Activities The park offers a range of exciting activities, including hiking, rock climbing, and caving. I opted for a guided hike, which took me through the forest and offered stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Overall, my visit to Bantimurung Bulusaraung National Park was an unforgettable experience. The park's stunning scenery, diverse wildlife, and exciting activities make it a must-visit destination for anyone interested in nature and adventure. I highly recommend it! Rating: 5/5

This is a great place and easily becomes nice instagrammable spots to take pictures of the waterfall, creeks and ponds. It takes around an hour drive from Makassar to reach the area. I have no idea but I don't see too many butterflies as this place is called "kingdom of butterflies" during my visit. If you take the path around the small hill, you would reach a stone cave where you could explore it if that's your things. But when the guide there told me that there's actually another small pond that'd been closed to the visitors due to some accidents involved, where the scenery is even better. Well, we managed to persuade the guide to take us there after a strict promise that we won't take a dip or swim inside the pond. After some steep walks, we managed to reach the spot and yes, it was indeed worth seeing. My only negative rating of this tourist area is that it is currently not well maintained. While it should be a great tourist attraction, I saw collapsed concrete railings on the path to the cave and other maintenance needs to be conducted to make this place better.
Agus W — Google review
so genuine..so freshhhh..sooo originaalll...!!!! even the tour guide said all that not allowed to give food to the wild monkeys and/or wild boar inside the forest in order not to break the ecosystem and not to break their body chemicals, so let the wild keep eating something wild and natural also from the forest..and we as the visitors have to be discipline for that rules in order to keep them on track as well😎👍🙌💪🔥🥰 however..as usual other tourism places..somehow its not well maintained hiks..while it is truly such a legacyyyyy for our country🥺🙏 anyway i also attach the video courtessy of my lil sis how gorgeous the bantimurung lake with so many butterflies!!!🥰🥰🥰🥰🙌🙌👍🙌

(Translated by Google) I ordered pizza here when there was an event at the Al Markaz Al Islami Maros Mosque, coincidentally the outlet location was close to each other, on the main road near the red light, right in front of the Adipura Horse Statue Monument. The pizza variants that I ordered were Grilled Beef and American Classic Cheeseburger, because the waiter said this was the recommended menu. It tastes okay, the service is also quite good, not too long to queue. It's just that what I ordered didn't provide the Large size, so I had to order the medium one.

Rammang Rammang Karst Village, located in Maros-Pangkep, Salenrang Village, South Sulawesi Province, is a hidden gem offering breathtaking views of karst hills covered in lush vegetation. It is the third largest karst mountain area globally and is a UNESCO-protected site. The village provides an opportunity to experience traditional life and houses while exploring the natural beauty of the region.
A hidden gem in South Sulawesi! Rammang Rammang is one of the most beautiful and peaceful places I have ever visited in Indonesia. Surrounded by stunning karst mountains, rivers, and green rice fields, the scenery feels like something out of a dream. The local people are friendly, and the boat ride through the karst forest is a must-do experience. Perfect for nature lovers, photographers, or anyone who wants to escape the city and relax in nature. Highly recommended!⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Embark on an unforgettable boat tour through stunning karst formations, charming villages, serene rivers, and mysterious caves. Each boat accommodates up to 4 people and costs around 200K Rupiah. The scenery is absolutely breathtaking—perfect for capturing those Instagram-worthy moments! This spot is a photographer’s dream. While I recommend sticking to a few key villages (extra charges apply for more), the entire experience is a must-do for any adventure seeker. Overall, it’s an amazing trip you won’t want to miss!
Anova F — Google review
The access to the village is through boat rides which will cost you around IDR 200k per boat. Pricing has been set on a fixed price which is nice. I recommend you to wear the farmers type hat. It's very sunny and bright with almost zero shade. Unfortunately the boardwalk is in need of maintenance. And there's need to be more waypoint.

Taman Batu Stone Forest

4.5

Hiking area
Taman Batu Stone Forest, once featuring bamboo platforms for walking, has been left unmaintained during the pandemic. As a result, the bamboos now float freely and the area becomes swamped with water during the rainy season. Navigating through muddy trails can be challenging as murky water can reach knee-deep levels and sinking mud poses a risk of getting stuck. Visitors have even reported their hiking sandals being torn apart, forcing them to continue barefoot.
Very beautiful place. In the dry season you can walk around the whole place and explore all the hidden spaces in between the rock formations. Perfectly doable by yourself
Jan W — Google review
The place used to have bamboo platforms to walk on. However, when the pandemic hit, the place left unmaintained and now the bamboos are left floating freely. This place is swamped with water during rainy season and you have to navigate through a very muddy trail. In some parts, the murky water could be knee-deep high and the sinking mud can quickly swallow your legs. My old hiking sandals got stuck and were torn apart so I had to continue walking barefooted 😅. It sounds dangerous and it probably is... Our guide casually said that ricefield snakes could be lurking. But the trek is so much fun and exciting! Definitely challenging trail compared to the kids-friendly Pak Joni's Taman Batu nearby. An experienced guide is needed and in our case, we were safely guided by Pak Nahar of Rammang Rammang House homestay. It's nice to know that there is already a plan to revitalize the trail for a safer experience.

(Translated by Google) The view is beautiful 😍 To find the site: With maps, I went to the end of the path with my scooter, I left it with a family who lent me their parking lot. They showed me the start of the path. It's not signposted at all, so I tried to get as close as possible to the GPS point, by walking through the rice fields. When you arrive at the GPS point, you have to locate a concrete cabin, in front of it, there is a stream, like a natural swimming pool. The bridge no longer exists to cross and reach the bank where the cave is located. There were a few beams left but I crossed through the water, the natural pool until I reached the shore on the other side. On the right, you can spot steps in the distance and then you finally see the wooden staircase then the iron staircase. The Museum Balla Lompoa, located in Sungguminasa near Makassar, is a tribute to the rich history of the Gowa kingdom. Housed in a traditional Bugis structure, it boasts an extensive collection of artifacts and items that offer insight into the heritage of Gowa. The museum is a faithful reconstruction of the Palace of the Gowa Kingdom and features private chambers for the king, storage space for artifacts, and a reception room.
It's well maintained heritage sight! There are 2 buildings, of which 1 is replica. Make sure you go inside to see the family tree, traditional clothes, weapons. There are also lot of pictures. It's good spot for people who love to click selfies. Make sure you bring a hat, if it's sunny day. The toilets are run down.

It's a beautiful traditional house that used to be a palace. There were lots of invaluable historical items that were displayed with lack of effort to make it a tourist worthy museum, no proper lighting and no English. It needs professional help to run this museum properly and so safe the items so that future generations can still see it. Hopefully government will do something to help the palace fix the museum. It's still worth a visit if you are in Makasar

This museum is housed in a wonderful wooden structure that is representative of the traditional architecture of Old Gowa, the Palace of Tamalate. The museum should enlighten you on the history of the people of Gowa. The royal family and the nobles. The conflicts. There are collections of old coins, weapons, clothing, paintings, and literature. Should you want to dress up as a Gowa noble, you could rent clothes at the museum for a fabulous photo opportunity. In summary, this museum should be on your list of attractions to visit when in Makassar.

You can see the Crown of King of Gowa in this place. The Crown have a good design like a lotus flower. But, i think that design also similar with cobra. Many things about Gowa Empire you can see in Balla Lompoa. And of course you can take a non commercial photo for free.

Kebesaran seorang raja. Balla Lompoa Museum is one of the historic buildings in the territory of the Kingdom of Goa. Balla Lompoa is one of the Palace for the Kingdom of Goa. The word Balla Lompoa comes from the makassar language which means the Great House. Why is a the Great House? Though there is a larger building beside it? Balla Lompoa actually has its own meaning so it is said that. Called Balla Lompoa because inside there is "Kallompoang" which means Greatness. The greatness of a king. That is the reason why it is called Balla Lompoa. After King Goa to 36, Sultan Abdul Kadir Aididdin Andi Idjo Karaengta Lalolang (First Regent in Gowa District) died, the Palace of Balla Lompoa then made Museum Balla Lompoa. Balla Lompoa Museum area also has Tamalate Palace which is often used as a multipurpose building.

The front gate is always closed, So u need to head to the rear gate to get in. It's a little bit dirty because of littering trashes around. There're couple houses on stilts (rumah panggung); one for the King family's quarter, one is for the museum. The ticket fee for the museum costs IDR 5.000. Inside the museum, you can see the traditional clothing, traditional music instrument, the King's family tree, King’s throne, and many portraits of the previous Kings. This place adorned with red and yellow curtains, giving it amazing touches. You won't get bored looking at it. The wind breezing through the big windows makes this place even more relaxing.

Restaurant
Kimukatsu Mal Ratu Indah Makassar is a popular spot in Indonesia known for its specialized Gyukatsu, which has been gaining attention for its tender and flavorful meat. While the main attraction is the gyukatsu, the restaurant also offers side dishes like gyoza, agedashi tofu, tamagoyaki, and salad. The service at this family-friendly establishment is highly praised, with Mr. Edward being particularly commended for his excellent service.
great selection of food , medium to high prices. lots of seating area . very long queue because its newly open .

Specialized in Gyukatsu, lately become so popular in Indonesia. The meat is tender and -to me- better than some Japanese resto that served the same menu. But if you like me who loves side dishes such as gyoza, agedashi tofu, tamagoyaki, or even salad prepare to be a bit disappointed. Nothing really special, or should I say average. For first timer it's a quite OK and the price was not that bad.
Piter H — Google review
Don’t even bother Hard to find a single good thing to say about this chain. The only good thing I can say about it, it is edible. The katsu is poor. The katsu skin and the filling always falls apart even before you eat it (yes it applies to the beef katsu too). The filling is just a painful experience too. Dry chicken and not juicy beef at all. Shame the curry sauce is a disgrace. It is thin and it tastes like store bought curry paste. The condiment inside the curry? sadness. Thin and sad looking carrots, raw onions and weirdly, peas? Why? Oh god. Overall it is an overpriced katsu that tries to be “fancy” but not even better than homecook katsu and curry. Avoid this chain

Leang Leang Archaeological Park is a captivating destination located in Bantimurung, Maros, South Sulawesi. The park features the unique and well-preserved Leang-leang cave, a prehistoric site where ancient humans lived. The cave boasts ancient paintings that are around 40 thousand years old, offering visitors a glimpse into the past. The geological site is about a 2-hour drive from Makassar and showcases impressive limestone formations up close.
A must visit if you are in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The place tells you the history of the first mankind existence. There are many caves (leang), but to enter you have to accompany with a tour guide. Please take responsibility to keep the clean in the area. The is also a museum in the area to getting now more about leang-leang.

A Unique stone garden. People tend to just focus on photographing the limestone constellation, it is beautiful but the history lies in the caves. Hand stencils and animal painting made by prehistoric humans is actually the main attractions here. The museum even though really small but the display is international quality. Such an interesting and comprehensive and modern approach of a museum.

Gorgeous and well-kept place. Only required a small donation to the volunteer who unlocked the gates for us and gave us a mini tour. Easy walk in the park except for the part by the cave paintings, that section is elevated, you have to climb rocks a little bit, there are no harness or railings on that part so you have to be careful.

You can see one "hand shape" painting from the ground The place is just a big garden (nice one) with stones.. Super luxury washroom Full of locals trying to take the best instagram/tiktok pics

It is a fantastic geological site that is very well maintained. It's about 2 hours' drive from Makassar. From the entrance itself, you can see the incredible limestone formations up close. Entrance fee is Rp10.000. If you use the public parking opposite the entrance, it is Rp3.000. The further you walk, the more impressive it gets. However, it is advisable that proper shoes are worn if you want to venture further into the limestone karst hills. If you are satisfied with a simple sightseeing trip with maybe a picnic with family and friends, there are several areas to do so. A small stream flows within the park, and it lends soothing background sounds. On the day I visited, the park was not crowded.

However, have we ever wondered, where does the name Bantimurung waterfall actually come from? Who was the first person to name the waterfall? The history and origins of the word Bantimurung begin during the Bungaya I and II Agreements (1667-1669) when Maros was controlled directly by the Dutch. After that, Maros turned into the Gemeschaap traditional district which was led by a district head elected by local nobles with the title of Karaeng, Arung or Gallarang. The Simbang Kingdom is one of the traditional districts of Gemenschaap which is within the territory of the Maros kingdom. The district is ruled by a local nobleman with the title "karaeng." Starting around the beginning of the 18th century, Patahoeddin Daeng Paroempa, was appointed Karaeng Simbang. He began to reaffirm the presence of the Simbang Kingdom by organizing and developing its territory. One of the programs he carried out was to build a road across the Simbang Kingdom. The construction of this road is planned to cut through the wilderness area. Unfortunately, the work was hampered by a roaring sound in the forest where the road was being built. At that time, the workers did not dare to continue the road construction work, because the roar was so loud. Karaeng Simbang, who directly led this project, then ordered a royal employee to look into the wilderness and find out where the rumbling sound came from. After making a short trip into the forest area to find out where the rumbling sound came from, the royal employee immediately returned to report to Karaeng Simbang. However, before reporting, Karaeng Simbang asked first. "Aga ro merrung?," he asked in Bugis language which means "what is that sound that rumbles?" "Benti, puang (water, my lord)," answered the royal official. (Benti is refined or high level Bugis language for water). Feeling curious, Karaeng Simbang invited all members of the group to see the roaring water directly. Arriving at the place where the sound came from, Karaeng Simbang was immediately stunned and amazed to see the huge flood of water encroaching on the rock flowing down from the top of the mountain. "Makessingi kapang narekko iyae onroangnge' jasangngi benti merrung (maybe it would be good if this place was called the roaring water)," said Karaeng Simbang. Starting from the word "benti merrung" the sound then changed to Bantimurung. The discovery of the waterfall meant that plans to build the road could not be continued. In fact, the area around the waterfall was used as a new village within the territory of the Simbang Kingdom. This village is headed by a village head with the title Pinati Bantimurung.

The Tallo Kings Tomb Complex, a significant historical site, serves as the final resting place for the rulers of the Tallo Empire. This complex is steeped in history, particularly notable for its connection to the Makassar Kingdom formed through an alliance in 1528 under Sultan Hasanuddin's reign. Nestled on Sulawesi's southern tip and west coast, this serene location offers visitors a chance to explore its rich past.
Very interesting historical site. Easy to walk around and see the history for yourself. The graves are maintained by a group of locals who help keep it tidy. For a small tip, one of the people looking after the place was able to give a little bit more information about each grave. Well worth a visit especially if you are visiting Makassar with an interest in history.
