Naturama is a contemporary museum featuring a diverse collection of taxidermy, including whale skeletons, birds and wild boars. It offers an immersive experience for visitors with sounds of nature and different atmospheres created on each floor. The exhibit boasts many species of animals and is highly recommended for children, as well as adults. The polite and talented staff speaks fluent English, making the sightseeing experience easier with descriptions available in English too.
Interesting place where you get a lot of good information about the animals in and around Denmark. The staff is ready to answer any questions you may have. In addition to all that you can read about the animals yourself, small presentations are also given by the staff, which is quite exciting.

A mixture of modern hands-on natural history museum and historical collection. Most of the exhibit descriptions are available in Danish, English and German. Very nice service staff. Good bad weather alternative for nearly half a day.
Soso natural history museum. Some elevators were not working, so hard to get around with stroller. Gift shop placed too conveniently at the entrance, so kids get excited for overpriced toys before they even enter. Staff in cafe was friendly.
One of the most beautiful museums in Denmark. With places and small caves for kids to play and a lot to learn even for grown ups.
Very good animal sculptures, some are interesting some are really cute.
Parking was not great. Had to park 10-15 minutes away, on a Tuesday around noon (though during the school holiday). The exhibits were beautiful, my kids loved it, and all the personnel we interacted with were excellent! 👌

Highly informative about how the poor, orphans, and those in difficult situations were treated in Denmark before the modern social safety nets were established. The museum has much resonance for today for Danes and foreigners alike. Highly recommended.

Interesting, but somewhat depressing museum - happy to live now rather than then
While visiting Svendborg, we made a stop at Danmarks Forsorgsmuseum, and it turned out to be one of the most interesting and thought-provoking museums we've visited in Denmark. It's truly worth a visit for anyone curious about the lesser-known chapters of the country’s social history.
From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by a thorough and engaging receptionist, who took the time to explain what to expect from the visit and how best to navigate the museum. The map and overview helped a lot and set the tone for a meaningful experience.
The highlight for us was the exhibition on “The Seven Poor Children”, which powerfully amplified the voices and stories of those on the margins of Danish society. It was deeply moving and carried a much-needed narrative that is too often underrepresented in mainstream history.
Overall, the museum is well-curated and thoughtfully interactive, providing space for reflection and engagement. That said, we’d like to share a few points for potential improvement:
1. The English name of the museum – “Welfare Museum” – can be a bit misleading, as “forsorg” in Danish refers more specifically to state-run social care and institutionalization. Perhaps a more accurate name in English would be “The Danish Social Care Museum” to better reflect the focus.
2. While the personal stories of former residents are powerful and absolutely worth sharing, we found the amount of narrative material a bit overwhelming at times. A more balanced presentation might help ensure their voices are fully heard without fatigue.
3. We would have appreciated more historical context about the building itself—its transformation over the years and its role within the broader system of Danish social care.
4. Lastly, we felt the 2019 state apology by the Danish Prime Minister deserved more emphasis than just a photo at the end. It’s a significant national acknowledgment, and placing it more centrally could underline the importance of confronting past injustices.
Despite these minor points, our visit was truly impactful. We highly recommend Danmarks Forsorgsmuseum to anyone interested in exploring the human stories behind Denmark’s social history. It’s a museum that challenges, informs, and stays with you.
It is a fine place, where they have done alot to try tell how the poor people had it back then. They try follow the path of some people from birth to end of life. It is for a certain age, there is pretty much reading but also some nice "rooms" how they lived. It is very good to visit in rain days or cold days. Can be hot on a very hot summer day, though they try to cool it. It is worth a visit.
You have to show this to your children 👌😉
Until 1974, these buildings housed the poor and the socially challenged people of Svendborg and the surrounding areas. People like prostitutes, orphans, neglected children, criminals and other humans on the edge of society
The house was build in 1871-72 and there are so many of the original effects that are kept.
You can scan the QR codes and listen to the stories of the people who use to live there. Don’t forget to walk around the building and experience the herb garden.
An important story of the danish poorhouse and how tough the people’s lives were.
On the first floor, you can experience the apartement of the former attendant/superviser. The apartement stands as it did in the 1950s.
If you go to the men’s departement, the dining room is also original with all furniture and even the plants from 1974!
You can bring your own lunch and eat in the cosy yard. The little shop sells snacks, local organic ice cream and soda.
Definitely, worth a visit!
Visited Svendborg last week of July 2020 and came to see the museum with my 12 year old daughter and I was surprised how big the welfare museum was. This is great place to experienced to discover how the welfare state Denmark treated the poorest up until 1974. The museum was very interesting how this place kept so well and allowed to show the world to gives a glimpse of an understanding of how life must have been with the poor people way back then. If you visit Svendborg and see other interesting place include Danmark's Forsorgmuseum as part of your itinerary because it is worth visiting the place.
If you want to know how less fortunate people were stripped of their rights and put behind barbed wire just because of being poor.
Then you should visit this place and see how Denmark treated those people in the past. Before the welfare state.

The impressive Danmarks Museum for Lystsejlads, situated on the pier in Svendborg, offers a captivating glimpse into the world of yachting. Beautiful yachting museum located at the pier in Svendborg. Interesting to know more about the previous owners of those yacht inside the museum. I really enjoyed watching those beautiful old shiny yacht and very interesting. There are many collections of yacht that belongs to prominent people in the past both from Denmark and and from other countries. Worth a visit and its free entrance but donation is optional. The museum has 130 vessels - everything from small dinghies and classic kayaks to historic boats such as. The starboat Leise, which sailed with the Olympic flame or Denmark's smallest pointed gates "Bette Ole" at just 4 meters.

Beautiful yachting museum tracing the history of leisure boating since the early 20th century. It smells good for those who are fanatics and is managed with heart by local volunteers. Worth to be seen and supported!

Thurø Church, a charming gem nestled on a small hilltop overlooking the water, is a must-visit for anyone exploring Danish history. Dating back to the 1600s, this atmospheric church offers visitors an enchanting experience, especially during services that resonate deeply with the soul. The well-maintained cemetery surrounding it provides serene spots with benches where you can sit and soak in breathtaking views of the sea.
This is a lovely church to visit. It is very old, from the 1600's. There is a graveyard next to it with the most wonderful view to the sea. It is a lovely place to go for a walk. I don`t know if it is always open to the public though. We were there at a funeral, and it was beautiful. There is a female priest, which I find it amazing.

The food presentation was really nice. Started with a carpaccio that was very good. Also a lot of it, almost a whole meal on its own. Others took a shrimp cocktail 🤢 But that is my personal opinion they thought it was great though... 😅
Main dish the PIZZA!!! OK I took the carpaccio pizza (pizza 2000) couldn't have chosen a better pizza at all! It was great and the truffels on it was just perfect, not too strong but just perfect... It was soo good that I forgot to shoot a photo for you guys...
A friend of mine took a lam steak or something like that, it was really just bone and fat, didn't look nice, he was trying to get some meat out of it but it was just a lost cause so we said something about it and the chef/owner came personally to see if he could solve it for us and came up with a good solution and that made up for it so that was good!
Banana split is always great, and good that they paid attention to my personal preferences and changed it for me a little bit to make it an amazing evening 😊

Horrible service unfortunately and unfriendly waitress - entire restaurant was empty, asked us to choose a place we like, my wife did and then was annoyed about why we chose the place - 2 seat table only - not that we were occupying something for 4 or 6 people. Simply have never experienced so much passive aggressiveness in one single place than here. Prices are also way too high for the quality of the food. Of all the countries we have been to, this is first time I’m seeing hard and crunchy carrots, cabbage and what not for a 20€ pizza. Anyways, wouldn’t be visiting again 👋

Real authentic old school Italian restaurant. A lot of decor...maybe a tad too much clutter. Don't know how you keep that clean, but it adds to the charm of the place. The food is really good and the pizza was perfect. The waiters will very quickly help you to a table and bring your drink and food, but then be either very patient and wat a long time for the bill, or simply get up and go to the till and pay. I ate there twice in a one week and had to get up and go pay at the till both times.

I have been in this restaurant just once, being an Italian I had to give it a try. The interior of the restaurant is really particular and nice, the owner is very gentle. I spent a nice evening eating a good pizza. I will definitely come back.

Wouldn't go back. I had to ask for menus after 10 mins of waiting. I had to tell them we were ready to order. They delivered two pizzas without some items taken off (no meat please for the vegetarian) so then the vegetarian had to wait for their pizza to be done again, while everyone else was eating while their pizza was hot. For this mistake, i had to ask for the price to be reduced. Only then was it reduced.

A group of seven ate here on a recent sailing trip. The meals were of generous proportions and of great flavour with good service. But one of us may have suffered an upset stomach from a shell-fish dish. We may have been unlucky.

Terrible service, very uncomfortable "Deluxe^ room...
It started at the booking process: they told me first I could cancel my reservation for the 3-day Archipel Stay till 12.00 at the day of arrival but their confirmation stated 8 days in advance.
We had to book then the more expensive "Deluxe Room", the only then available.
This room does not suite the standards for a normal use. You cannot reach the bed from one of the sides, or either the window without a deep bow: the half of the room in under a pronounced inclination.
Our clothes and bags all spread over the floor, no shelves of closet to place them.

I stayed here with my family and partner. We were getting married on the nearby island, so the location was great. Right next to the ferry. The staff were very helpful and we also liked the restaurant as well. The rooms we had were quaint and very classical.
The location is good. Parking is tricky but the staff can help direct you to spots. It is also next door to a lovely Italian restaurant.
We booked this hotel because it's so close to the ferry terminal but as soon as we walked in to the reception we realized that it was exceptional. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and the reception area and bar is delightfully old fashioned, the decor is superbly done. The room was even nicer with a four poster bed and old fashioned chairs and a settee. Everything was clean and the bed was comfortable. This is an old fashioned sort of hotel and if you prefer modern corporate style hotels it may not be for you.

First off, the receptionist and staff were really friendly and helpful, the entrance area/reception is very welcoming. The hotel is perfectly located if you are traveling to or from æro as we were. Although the hotel is a 3* it only just holds on to this standard because of the poor state of the rooms. The cleanliness was below par, the rooms have an old world charm which is nice but the bathrooms need a serious deep clean/renovation. At least in our room on the top floor. Beds were however comfortable with clean cotton bedding and breakfast was great.

The lunch service was just ending, and the dinner service was yet to begin, so we were slightly off schedule. Regardless of that - the staff was most accommodating, suggesting dishes on and off the menu, helping us pick the right dishes, and the food ended up being just great. The owner came out to talk to us - a wonderful gentleman who later suggested a couple of places to visit on our way back to our hotel. We had a lovely relaxing time, felt welcome and at home. We went for dinner and on first arriving the place looked a bit run down. We were seated outside as it was a fantastic spring evening. The service was great, they did not expect have a busy evening, but they did and the waiter was doing a great job.
We ordered the fried eels and the Kro gryde. Both dishes were fantastic and we will return for more for sure.
The price was very reasonable. With drinks and 2 deserts, we only paid 1350,- Danish cronor.

I really like visiting traditional Danish inns, and have been to many and without a doubt, Bregninge takes the hygge and best food prize. They have the best wiener schnitzel this side of Austria. An authentic Inn, with super friendly and charming staff. The food though, the food was amazing, we had their star dish, Weiner Schnitzel, with potatoes and peas, while our daughter had the kids burger, which was all the bits on a platter which she could then build herself. We also had coffee and various deserts, which all were excellent. Honestly, I cannot say enough how great it all was. Book a table though as it gets busy.

The grounds are beautiful and there are so many things to do. The weight room is good enough for a nice pump and sweat. The breakfast was very good. I wish I had more time here. We booked a room at the last minute, so we could stay in this beautiful castle only for one day. The room was simple but clean. And we spent most of our time at the drawing room. Hotel staff kind and friendly. Breakfast fresh and delicious.
A beautifully renovated castle. The rooms felt authentic but modern enough to be comfortable in. They were even dog friendly and our Westie was allowed to stay with us. Great nature walks around the castle and the grounds have been kept up well. Do make sure to visit the little museum. It has an amazing amount of bronze age spear head collections.

There's nothing much to this place other than the location. Don't be fooled by the high rating. The food is average, nothing extraordinary. So, there's nothing much to talk about it anyway. Now comes the service! First of all, they charge you for tap water on a per person basis ie. 30 DKK for each person! Like seriously?? After ordering over 600 DKK worth dinner, you don't even give complementary tap water to drink ?! This was a deal breaker. And no, not all Danish restaurants charge for tap water, so that is not a norm. But apparently this high-end restaurant does! Do they notify you that the tap water is chargeable? No! Is the price of tap water mentioned on the menu? No! Upon ordering beef steak, do you get asked if the steak should be done rare or well done? No! At the end of your meal, do you get asked if you would like to have any dessert or coffee? No! Go there if you like this kind of surprises that you don't even expect in an average restaurant, let alone a highly priced upscale restaurant. But I am definitely not going there again and would strongly advise people against it. There are a lot of similar or even better restaurants in terms of food, don't bother to waste your money here.
Charging people for tap water without notifying them is nothing short of cheating people. You want people to pay for even tap water? That's fine, but at least show some decency to mention it to the customers beforehand. It is not as trivial as you may think it is.

I waited for 69 minutes - yes sixty nine minutes - before the main dish was served, and I sat all by myself in the whole restaurant before the course was served, because this was passed their closing time, so slow they were.
The table where I sat was not clean, but had grease-spots on it. Every table also has small paper covers which looks like baking paper given the whole place a cheap impression - like every customers is a kindergarten child who have no manners.
The facilities looks like they not seen any form of service since the 90’s.
The soya which is on the tables is a plain and cheap soya, which can bought in every supermarkets in Denmark and not worthy a restaurant which is branding itself as a thai restaurant.
I also noticed that customers, who should pick-up take-away food at given times, waited for more than 15 minutes.
It seemed like they had no control nor overview over the situation in the restaurant.
One of the waiters (a young man) had an unfriendly attitude and was not giving the customers a good experience.
I have tried many thai restaurants around the world, but this was by yards my worst experience.
In short. I will not recommend anyone to eat there.

We had a fabulous and very happy evening at Resume eating delicious beautifully prepared food and drinking excellent very well paired wines. The staff looked after us very well, were very informative, and a lot of care was taken by the chefs to accommodate various food intolerances we had specified on booking. We particularly enjoyed the crispy fish skins with the pickled sauce and the pollock fillet with lobster ravioli. The sorrel sorbet was also delicious and very refreshing. Thank you.

Stella Maris is a luxurious seaside retreat with elegant rooms and suites, offering breathtaking ocean views. The hotel boasts a relaxed bar and a French/Danish restaurant. From the balcony, guests can enjoy a magnificent vista of Svendborgsund. The service provided by the entire wait staff is exceptional – prompt and welcoming. The concise menu features delectable dishes prepared with fresh local ingredients, including freshly caught fish from the harbor, organic greens from the herb garden, and locally brewed beer.
If you come to Denmark and you do not stay at Stella Maris then you have missed something special. From the food to the rooms and the view and location, all were wonderful, but the best thing are the staff - they are exceptional. This was our first time to Denmark and we will come back again soon, and definitely be staying at this hotel again. Not to be missed!

We had a wonderful family stay at Stella Maris over the Christmas holidays. The service and staff were absolutely outstanding, warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. The food was exceptional and a highlight of our visit, easily among the best we’ve had at a hotel. The property itself is charming, set in a beautiful location that feels both peaceful and special. The rooms were comfortable and plenty nice, though not particularly luxurious—but everything else more than made up for that. A truly memorable experience we’d love to repeat!
Spending new years eve in another country is always a lottery. In our case we had just arrived in Denmark at the end of our long roadtrip from Switzerland over the Christmas and New Year week-ends of 2023 and putting up at this elegant country side hotel in the western outskirts of Svendborg was a tempting project. We arrived just before dark and managed to get showered and dressed in our nicely decorated and sober room in time for the Queen's speech to the nation at 6 pm where she declared she would resign and pass on the reign to her son after 52 years as the nation’s leader. After this we were served oysters flushed down with champagne in the bar and then seated for a dinner that was going to last till midnight. It was an interesting observational study of the Danish upper middle class and their eating and drinking habits. There was no real dress code imposed, therefore you could see that some were wearing brown shoes after 6 pm, only recommended if you are planning on going out on a nightly wild boar hunting mission, which was obviously not the case. Food and wine were well matched as one should expect, although being a wine snob myself, I thought there were some not so classy wines being served. Olivia who is not eating meat had the giant Wellington beef replaced by a matching turbot dish, a really nice treat by the kitchen. For us the evening ended with a beautiful fire work just in front of our eyes. The rain had stopped minutes before midnight and allowed us to enjoy the scenery from the hotel terrace. We did not join the other guests for their night caps since we had to be up early for breakfast and our final day bringing us to Copenhagen. Like always with breakfast in Denmark you have the option to cure your hangover with a bitter, in our case three variants. Sooo traditional...
Finally, our compliments to the staff for putting up with everybody's habits with a smile; very professional. And the rooms feature the world’s longest shoehorns, a tribute to their guest population.
Superb location in quiet relaxed surroundings, delicious hotel with a wonderful bar and restaurant with a great view and comfortable chairs. Nice rooms with the necessities that should be there. The food is exquisite and delicious, using seasonal food, locally produced.
All the staff, from the Hotel Director Lui to the cleaning staff were sweet and welcoming and all exudes a super wonderful relaxed and embracing workplace, which to that extent rubs off on us guests. We will definitely be back.

The hotel impressed us with its remarkable attention to detail. Every corner of the property, including small decorative items, appeared to have been thoughtfully selected and cared for.
We were pleasantly surprised by the exceptional quality of the rooms, bar area, dining area, and outdoor seating. The view from our room overlooking the canal was outstanding.
The food and service were excellent, and our group felt genuinely welcomed. Our server was attentive and knowledgeable about the menu, which featured French-inspired cuisine of Michelin-star quality.
Our sole regret was that we couldn't stay longer. Without hesitation, the Stella Maris is among my top boutique hotel favorites from all my travels.
If I ever find myself in the vicinity again, the Stella Maris will be my go-to destination for both lodging and dining.
We had a great stay at Stella Maris. The location is spectacular with beautiful views of the water (Svenborg Sound) from our room as well as from the restaurant. Hotel Stella Maris is Paradise! We have spent a week at this amazing and beautiful hotel. The hotel manager Lui Haas Jensen and his staff made our stay unforgettable. The location of the hotel is fantastic with a spectacular view . The food and wine served in the restaurant was so delicious and outstanding. We will definitely come back to this beautiful place and thank the staff for making our vacation so pleasant and wonderful.
We really enjoyed our stay at Stella Maris. The area is calm and the waterfront is beautiful. Thanks to the bikes provided by the hotel, Svendborg is only a couple of minutes away. The room is nicely furnished and comfortable. Delicious breakfast! I will come back.
