Agrigento in 2 days

If you only have 2 days to spend in Agrigento, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
The Sicilian city of Agrigento (Argirò in Sicilian), is a great place to visit any time of year, but especially between the months of March and September - where the weather is warm but not too hot. The city is noted for its rich Greek history, and tourists flock to visit the famed Valley of Temples, a UNESCO Heritage site consisting of seven well-preserved classical Greek temples. It is also well known for the ruins of the ancient Greek city Akragas, much of which is still being excavated today.
With favorites like Cathedral of San Gerlando, Pasticceria Rizzo, and Casa Natale di Luigi Pirandello e Tomba, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Ninin Osteria and La Terrazza degli Dei so you can get the best taste of Agrigento while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Valley of the Temples is a vast archaeological site in Sicily, featuring ancient temples and ruins of the city of Akragas. The city, known as Agrigentum to the Romans, was situated on a high plateau with a panoramic view. It boasted exceptional prosperity and magnificence, attracting foreign visitors.
Visit in the afternoon for less crowds and less heat - the shadows also make for much more cinematic photos! The bookstore has very cute souvenirs, most reasonably priced. Bring water as the water from most fountains on site is drinkable.

We visited Valle dei Templi in Agrigento with a group of students, arriving shortly after breakfast. The weather looked uncertain — dark clouds rolling in and a bit of wind — but that didn’t dampen our spirits. A resourceful vendor near the entrance was selling umbrellas for 10 €, which turned out to be a good investment! Despite the stormy skies, the site was absolutely spectacular. Walking among the ancient Greek temples — especially the Tempio della Concordia — gives you a real sense of timelessness. In front of the temple lies the striking fallen statue of Icarus, a modern bronze sculpture that contrasts beautifully with the ancient ruins and seems to capture the fragility of human ambition. It’s one of those sights that makes you stop and reflect before moving on. The paths are fairly easy to walk, though good shoes are essential. The site is large, so plan at least a couple of hours to explore it properly. There are rest areas, cafés, and a small bookshop near the entrance. This was one of the cultural highlights of our trip through Sicily — impressive, educational, and deeply moving. Tip: Go early in the day or later in the afternoon to avoid the heat and crowds. And if the forecast looks iffy… buy the umbrella!

So I did a two hour tour and learned a lot and the place has a great lunch cafe with stray cats. They have goats that are almost extinct ..... I think it's becuz of the horns. I loved the modern art piece of Icarus. So many paths and just a great easy walkable touchable place
Boston I — Google review
Surely one of the most significant and popular archaelogical sights in Sicily. A very unique experience that you need more than a day to fully discover. So many interesting features along this walk, not a difficult trek, easier if you start at the upper temple by taking the taxi from the parking area and work your way back down to it.
David F — Google review
The site is interesting but the visit could be better organized. Parking is paid separately, and you only learn ticket prices (€17 for entry) after passing a security check, and then for the lower garden (€7 more) only after you've descended about 10 meters down the path... Clearer pricing at the entrance would help. The electric cart costs €4, but the area is small enough to walk comfortably. The temple looks impressive from afar, though up close much of it seems reconstructed. The market-style entrance with many souvenir stalls feels a bit commercial. Overall, worth seeing, but the experience would be smoother and fairer with better signage and simpler ticket options.
Kuba S — Google review
The best preserved Greek Ruins we have seen. The site is very easy to walk through without too many steps (Children & Senior Friendly). Keep in mind the only public restrooms are before you go through the ticket entrances and one in the middle by the cafe. There are plenty of shaded areas to walk through and rest in. Plenty of parking at entrances and lots of photo opportunities. I highly recommend a visit.

***Valley of Temples, Agrigento, Sicily*** The Valley of Temples in Agrigento is a stunning glimpse into the ancient world. Walking among the ruins of towering temples dedicated to Greek gods, you’re transported back to a time before the Common Era. The site is a powerful reminder of how time — the ultimate force — destroys everything. The beauty of the ruins, set against the Sicilian landscape, is awe-inspiring, offering a humbling reflection on the fragility of human achievement.
Tigran P — Google review
One of the best preserved and most impressive ruins to visit, it is intense walking in the heat from one temple to the next. At least 3 hours to see them all properly. One star deducted as we were charged €17 entry (€3 for the gardens) and the gardens were closer anyway.

The Temple of Concordia in Agrigento, Sicily is a well-preserved ancient Greek temple with Doric architecture. It is part of a larger site that includes eight temples and various other remains, all located in the same area. The temple itself is considered one of the world's best-preserved Doric temples and offers a romantic setting amidst wildflower-dotted landscapes with distant views of the sea. Visitors can explore the site on foot or take a minibus for convenience.
It was so much fun! I recommend going in the evening, it’s beautiful with the sunset and it’s less crowded. You can enter and purchase tickets until 10pm. Very worth it (17€)
Frédérick R — Google review
The Temple of Concordia is absolutely breathtaking. Walking among these ancient ruins, you can really feel the history and grandeur of Sicily’s past. Stunning architecture, amazing views, and an incredible sense of timelessness—it’s a must-see for history lovers and anyone who appreciates awe-inspiring sites.
Sara D — Google review
It was a great experience to visit this archaeological site. I really appreciated the history behind the site. Just one to think about if you’re driving there, park in the car park at the bottom of the site and take a group taxi which is €3 euro per person. They will take you the top. This means you can walk from the top to the bottom in 1 hour or so, rather than walking up to walk back down to your car.
Rushil V — Google review
The archeological park is very big, so bring comfortable shoes. We happened to visit an hour before sunset, on a spectacular day, so we had the chance to admire the temples both with the natural light and in the sunset colors. At the end of the visit, the temples were bathed in artificial light, with a black background and was a breathtaking experience. All the monuments and main spots in the park had panels explaining the history, the architecture and drawings of the buildings, to provide the visitors a full perception of the magnitude of the ancient architecture. A guided tour is recommended, to be sure no details or aspects are missed. If you visit the site in a hot weather, bring a hat, sunscreen protection and plenty of water. A bar/cafeteria is located inside the park.

Historic buildings left after the Greek occupation. Audio phone is worth the extra price as it gives you much more information. Beautiful gardens. Wear good shoes and bring water.
Stephen — Google review
A stunning area of well preserved monuments with good insights into the history of these. We visited at dusk and found the light provided interesting photo opportunities too.
SM B — Google review
Very busy and difficult to get a photograph without somebody else in it. However, it is rare to see such a beautiful ancient temple so well preserved. I thought the entrance price was a bit high by Italian standards and the ticket seller was grumpy because I wouldn’t buy the guidebook, which is a bit pathetic really.

Nestled in the Valley of the Temples, Giardino della Kolymbethra is a centuries-old oasis featuring ancient olive trees, fragrant orange blossoms, and traditional citrus gardens. Managed by the heritage organization FAI, this charming garden offers a refreshing contrast to the surrounding temple landscape. Visitors can explore the living museum of almond trees and learn about ancient Greek underground chambers through guided tours. While there is an additional charge for entry, UK National Trust members enjoy free admission.
Great visit and don't miss the opportunity to visit the hypogea (Underground Chamber) if you can find a spot. The tour with the kids was amazing !

Enter The Valley of the Temple from the door. 5 (porta V) is the closest entrance to the gardens. The entrance will be next to the first temple. By giardino they mean a mainly lemon fields and a small vegetable garden. The cave can’t be visit without a previous booking so make sure you book un advance. No information charts are around the area so it makes the visit a bit boring without much info. I believe the place has great potential but a thought storytelling is needed. Many benches and places for a rest is good so bring food and you can sit here.
Betty B — Google review
Wow! Beautiful botanical garden on the site of the ancient Greek garden at the foot of the Valley of Temples. Also not to miss: the "hypogeum" -- an ancient tunnel carved through the hill (under the Temple of Castor and Pollux) joining the garden with the Fifth Gate. After baking your brains out visiting the temple complex under the merciless sun, treat yourself.
Hildred R — Google review
This is a great example of how plants were grown and used centuries ago! Expect to see plenty of citrus and olives!!
Karl G — Google review
If you like ruins and history, this place is amazing. The ruins are in very good condition. Some have been reconstructed, but the main temple is the original as it was used as a church and thus not destroyed for its stone. If possible, I strongly suggest that you hire a local guide as there is so much rich history and so many stories with this area. We learned so much from our guide, Marco. He was very kind and took the time to really explain to my son the history and about archeology. If ruins and temples are not your thing, then skip. However, if you are interested in seeing and learning about history from over 2400 years ago, this is your place. I’m glad we made the stop here and we also enjoyed a one night stay in the town.

Worth a detour to see all the varieties of fruit trees grown and sample some as you wander around. The temple of Vulcan was probably not worth the walk over. We also tasted a variety of marmalades they make - delicious. Also try the nut sweets.

Nice garden inside the park, with some local trees like lemon, orange, almond, chinotto. It is interesting but comparing with the rest of park, not sure if it is worth the 5€ additional for the ticket.

The Archaeological Museum "Pietro Griffo" of Agrigento is situated near the West Entrance of the Valley of the Temples. It's named after Pietro Griffo, an Italian archeologist, and it houses a diverse collection of artifacts such as ceramics, sculptures, coins, and jewelry. These items offer a comprehensive insight into the historical and cultural legacy of the region.
Absolutely fabulous. A must. I visited the museum the day after the temples, and I think it makes sense. The visit to the temples is so amazing that it is good to wait a but before going to the museum. Fantastic painting exhibition when I visited.

We took a bus from Palermo. Not bad as we stopped along the way for snacks. It was about 2.5 hours. They dropped us at the top of the ruins and it's all downhill from there. It was amazing and the pace was perfect. Very clean and organized. I had a surgery on my leg 10 days prior and it was a very easy walk. I recommend this to anyone just to experience the history of our planet. People are amazing and resourceful and here is proof! Please note: we visited in October. Not high season.

A very pleasant small museum set in a beautiful garden full of sculptures. The exhibition is thoroughly prepared, and the visiting program is clear and well-organized. Modern interiors housed within historic buildings. It's also worth mentioning that Cafe Del Museo offers delicious snacks, including huge vegan paninis.
Alina L — Google review
This is a fantastic archaeological museum - the best we found in Sicily. I recommend going to the temples first thing in the morning and the museum after (which is not as busy, and cool in the heat of the day). The highlight for us was the Greek vases which are extraordinary, but also don't miss the Odeon in the grounds, with archaeologists at work.
Roz C — Google review
This keynote museum must do much better. Such poor presentation of such important artifacts. No context is provided. For example, there is no timeline. There are no maps showing different populations and the city over time. There is no emphasis on the important artifacts. There are 1,000 artifacts and all are presented the same without context. No discussion of industry, minerals, trade, food production, social forces, etc. Plus poor wayfinding in the museum adds to the confusion. There are no "you are here maps". For such an important museum, very disappointing performance.
Bill W — Google review
Very nice museum with many everyday objects and jewelry from the excavations. Great little museum café in the garden with a beautiful view.
Udo C — Google review
The museum was nice to visit after visiting the ruins at the Valley of Temples nearby. Lots of archeological artifacts on display. They were all so interesting but we only had an hour to enjoy the museum because we were due elsewhere for dinner. The highlight for me was the big Telemon on display. We had gotten the combo ticket of €20 for the Valley of Temple and this museum. The price of the museum by itself is €9. There's a small gift shop at the entrance with a nice lady who also checked our tickets.
Sharon B — Google review
So many artifacts! Nice thing to do after the main attraction (Temples), I thought it's good value for the extra 3.50€. There was a giant group of teenagers with a guide who completely surrounded me and took a lot of space, which was awkward, and it was confusing how to get out of the museum (my advice: just go back to the entrance). What is completely strange to me is that there is no marked / direct path between the Valley of temples entrances / parking lots and the museum. The first path I tried back to the parking lot from the museum I got chased down by aggressive dogs, the second was a proper road but the gate was only open so visitors from tour buses can enter there (to my knowledge) => result: a guard stopped me thinking I tried to enter without paying. Getting TO the museum from the Temples I followed a marked path, and after 25 min walking in the heat with no shade arrived near the museum but all the gates were closed; a lady met me to ask what i was doing there; according to her i was trespassing 🤦‍♂️ but she let me out nicely and actually tried to help. You'd think if they sell a combined ticket it would be easy to access and find? No, no and no. But yeah once you find it there's a lot of things to see inside this museum. Probably they have millions of artifacts. I would suggest you only buy the combined ticket with the museum if you think that you and your party have the energy to walk 11 kilometers in total, because this is what it took me. And that's with my "illegal" shortcuts. It's an easy walk, but after 3 hours (time it took me with audio guide and taking some pictures) visiting the 12+ sites in the Valley of Temples, I've read reviews where people were too tired or couldn't find the museum. You'll see it on Google Maps but it is absolutely not signed anywhere until you're right in front of it. To be fair when I bought the combined ticket the staff did warn me it was a kilometer away (except you have to take a road around the park so it's more like 1.5 km but anyway...) If you're traveling on foot / by bus, the museum is actually the closest to the city.

The Temple of Zeus is awe-inspiring, even in its ruined state. The scale is massive, giving a real sense of the grandeur of ancient Greek architecture. The fallen columns and giant Telamons (stone figures) are incredible to see up close. It’s a powerful reminder of the strength and ambition of the ancient world. Truly one of the highlights of the Valley of the Temples.

Outstanding temple in the Valley of Temples in Agrigento. A very significant and popular sightseeing destination in Sicily. It's a nice stroll from one end to the other. I opted to take the taxi from the parking area to the other end and walk down towards the parking as I saw the sights along the wall.

Really wonderful, beautiful, awe inspiring place. So much history and so many incredible temples (surprisingly!). Really worth a visit. You could spend 4 or 5 hours here easily. There's also a decent little cafe and toilets. It's a lot of walking but there is a shuttle bus to get ohu back to the car park if you don't fancy walking all the way back.
David S — Google review
Accompanied by an extremely good guide we learned a lot about Sicilian and Greek history, How the evolution of mathematics was tightly tied to the development of larger temples with wider rooves - the golden proportions, Pythagoras etc. I'd advise visitors to bring an umbrella for shade. The complex involves multiple temples - we spent 2.5hrs walking through it. Bring a picnic.

Pastry shop
Infurna Pasticceria Giuseppe, located on Agrigento's main street, Via Atenea, is a delightful pastry shop worth visiting if you have a craving for sweets. This charming cafe offers a variety of Sicilian delicacies such as cannoli, almond biscotti, stracciatella ice cream and citrus granita. However, the highlight is their signature dessert: cassata.
During our five-night stay in Agrigento, we discovered the delightful Pasticceria Infurna on our first day, and it quickly became our go-to spot for dessert every evening. Located centrally on the main street, it was the perfect place to pause during our post-dinner strolls. The standout treat was undoubtedly the cannolo, particularly the classic with ricotta. The large cannolo, priced at just €2.50, and the smaller versions, available with ricotta or pistachio for only €1, were exceptional. The almond cookies and pistachios were equally impressive, and the limoncello cake was a delightful treat. Additionally, the granita with mulberry and pistachio was top-notch. A highlight of our visits was chatting with the owner, Davide. His friendliness and helpful suggestions for exploring the local area added to our experience. Pasticceria Infurna is a must-visit in Agrigento. Congratulations to Davide for creating such a wonderful place!

Cannoli was exceptional. This is the 4th place we tried it in - and this one far the best 🤤
Kate P — Google review
Most underrated pasticceria in Sicily and definitely in Agrigento. People should be lining up for this place and mark my words, it won’t be long some American director will want to film one of his shots in here. The staff is great - two Sicilian blokes right out of the godfather: one has two piercing eyes full of stories and things to say and the other will send you on to continue your day before the other talks you out of the shop. What a pair. Just the best. Pick one of each sweet available and obviously come back for ice cream! Can’t wait to be back. I’m not going to tell you what to pick - let them make that choice for you. Can’t wait to be back!
Tarek C — Google review
Terrible attitude towards tourists. Three of us came in, and even though plenty of shaded tables were free, the staff stuck us at the farthest table in blazing sun — with just two chairs. No toilet. No working card machine. Cash only. The desserts weren’t awful, but after being treated like this, they might as well have been. If this is how they welcome guests, I’d suggest spending your money elsewhere.
Alex L — Google review
Davide the owner welcomes you with a big smile, he understands if you are from Agrigento or you are a visitor! A breakfast with divine CANNOLO alla ricotta I recommend stopping by him, for a breakfast, an almond milk, a taste of almond paste or a takeaway of whatever good thing you desire. A presto!

A stop at this antics pasticceria is a must. The cannoli are superb and the arancini al pistachio absolutely an experience. We had dinner here after visiting the valley of the temples with a tray filled with a variety of creations, salty and sweet. The staff is very kind, thank you!

My Italian friends and I were really surprised that this restaurant had such amazing reviews. The quality of the food was good. Not exceptional but good. For the price we expected more quality and definitely more quantity. The plates they say are for two are in reality for one very skinny person. The people who work there are sweet but clearly not experienced. They spilled wine each time pouring our 5 glasses, forgot to bring water after we asked twice, and made us wait to long to pay. Ultimately for the price we expected more. And this is coming from a group with tourists AND Italians.

We totally loved the atmosphere! It was intimate and charming, later the chef spontaneously playing the guitar bonded everyone together. The food was good, but not excelent. Home style cooking, kept simple and straightforward, the portions generous. It was maybe a tad expensive, but in total a good experience.

We were recommended this restaurant by our AirBnB hostess as the traditional restaurant she would take her mother to. We weren't disappointed! Five stars for service does not even begin to describe the staff at La Terrazza degli Dei. After two nights at the hotel, my wife and I genuinely looked forward to seeing the staff at meals. At breakfast, Manuela, who gallantly saved us from a bee, was later seen holding someone's baby so they could finish their meal. Their Sicilian hospitality and warmth are truly extraordinary. When I asked, "Am I ordering too much?" she replied, "You're on vacation in Sicily - enjoy," and we really did. One evening, our waiter noticed we hadn’t eaten our all of our raw seafood which was delicious but admittedly as Americans we were novices eating some of the items raw. So, the server offered to grill it for us instead and it was heavenly. On our first night, Giovanni, with his remarkable ability to turn a barbecue with strangers into the most memorable night of our trip, was exceptional. The food, the wine, and delighting in a table of intelligent people from all over the world left us wanting more. These people became our friends for our stay. We normally love exploring towns and sightseeing, but we found ourselves loving the hotel restaurant so much that we didn’t want to leave. You will not find a better meal in Sicily, nor a kinder, more thoughtful staff.

Needless to say. The restaurant has an incredible view of the temple. Staffs was very polite and welcoming. They speak English well. We were there for lunch after the visit of the temple. It was a very good decision. They have beautiful and clean toilets in the reception area of the hotel. Every dish was great. The Mediterranean couscous was very delicious. Then pasta with prawn was tasty. The beef filet was perfect cooking. The risotto shrimp and lime was good also but we would have liked it a bit more soft. Yes. It was worth the price. We would have spent more time there for dessert if we didn’t have the flight to catch. I would recommend it!

Having the experience to have lunch or dinner, outdoors overlooking the valley of the temples is good enough. However, lunch was not my favorite nor I would recommend it. Dinner, was really good & perhaps your best option. Again, the friendliest staff we've had in Sicily. The food was delicious & the chef is doing an excellent job. Beautiful presentation, flavors & great variaty in he menu. Again, the decor and ambiance could be stellar yet it lacks it just like the Hotel. This restaurant could be a top ranking if they were to invest on a good decorator.

Highlight of our trip to agrigento, excellent food and service... maybe the best service we've had in Sicily. Excellent views of the Concordia ruin in a posh garden setting. The macaroni was particularly outstanding, though my wife thoroughly enjoyed her gazpacho as well. Don't miss dessert!

I don't have to mention the server' manner, It was perfect dish for me, though I have no knowledge about fine-dining, every server discribes enough details about dishes. I also stayed at the hotel. their service is beyond the standard hospitality! I will definitely come back and thank you so much for having me a great joy.

Seafood restaurant
"Il Pescatore" is a popular restaurant in Agrigento, known for its excellent service and fresh, well-presented fish dishes. The atmosphere is described as elegant yet casual, making it suitable for both special occasions and relaxed gatherings with friends. The staff is professional and attentive, providing helpful recommendations to diners. While reservations are recommended, the location on the seaside promenade adds to the restaurant's appeal.
Delicious fish, they prepared an entire fish for our party of three, with potatoes and tomatoes. It was excellent. The wine selection, also excellent. And my first real cassatta for dessert. The staff were all really friendly and we had a very memorable meal that we will be talking about in the future. Highly recommended.

We had a wonderful dinner at Il Pescatore in San Leone. The food was absolutely delicious—fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. The service was exceptionally friendly and attentive. Prices are a bit on the higher side, but completely worth it for the quality and the lovely setting near the sea with a great view. Highly recommended!

In the top 10 of best restaurants in Agrigento! Came here for lunch on a weekend and I was seated immediately, with a choice of tables. You can always tell when a restaurant is going to be nice when the waiting staff all looks happy and are joking and smiling with each other throughout the service. I was well attended to, and given some good advice on choices. This is not "fine dining", as in it is not a stuffy formal best cutlery and linen type of affair, it is simply excellently prepared. The food, service and atmosphere were excellent. The wine was terrific and matched perfectly the amazing meal. Dessert exquisite! Cash and card both accepted for paying.

This is a very good restaurant. I like the location, the service and the food. The fish is quite fresh and well presented. The restaurant is a perfect place for both an elegant night and a casual evening with friends. In average expect to pay €30 per person for a starter, second dish and wine. The staff is professional and know how to do their job. Nothing to complain about. I just recommend it to you. It deserves it ;)

It seems to be that the owner does not know the difference between red tuna and yellow. They claim that most product are fresh and from local catch... that's not what it tastes like. Here is a picture of a"shrimp" you will fond in your "insalata de mare" and of the "red tuna"... I'll let you judge.

For day 2, if you don’t mind the extra trek, today covers more off the beaten path places like Temple of the Dioscuri. The staff have done the best with I'm sure the small resourcing they have. With more funding, it could be an excellently curated homage to and opportunity for the public to critically understand the history, personality and works of this great writer. I would be willing to pay more for this and I'm sure those who appreciate Pirandello would feel the same. An example of a very well curated exhibition is for the work of Giuseppe Fava, 'La cultura e il diavolo' currently displaying at the Catania Galleria d'arte Moderna until 6 January 2026; which is curated to help understand the cultural context, times, and efforts of another brilliant Sicilian journalist, author and artist.

Absolutely lovely if you love Luigi Pirandello. The house is an elegant villa in the mid of Agrigento country, but it didn't look like better than a shepards shield at the beginning of XX century. Lot of pictures of his family and more, original manuscripts of his plays and short stories. There is a poetry hanging on the wall. Pirandello is known as a drama novel and short stories writer, surely not as a poet. Nevertheless the Return is really beautiful. The gravestone is incredible: a nature well kept sea view path leads you to his gravestone. Ironic Luigi, again you: how can a death place be so beauty?

The Temple of the Dioscuri is part of a larger archaeological site that includes several other ancient temples and sanctuaries. The temple is located in the western sector, alongside other majestic structures like the Temple of Herakles, Temple of Juno, and Temple of Olympian Zeus. Although the temple itself was destroyed, its preserved edges still give an idea of its original shape.
The Temple of the Dioscuri may not be as grand as the others in the Valley of the Temples, but it’s one of the most photogenic. Only four columns remain, standing dramatically against the sky — almost like a perfect postcard shot. It’s partly reconstructed, so it’s not as “authentic” as Concordia or Heracles, but it still has its charm. It feels symbolic: fragile yet proud, like a reminder of how much history this valley carries. Worth stopping by on your walk through the site, especially for photos at golden hour.

The Temple of Olympian Zeus is an impressive archaeological site featuring the remains of a large Greek temple, including toppled stone atlases. The park also houses various historical structures such as the monumental pyramid-shaped Tomb of Terone, three shrines, a Hellenistic-Roman district, and the Giambertoni necropolis.
First of all, I have to say that it was difficult to find the entrance gate. The gate that appears on the map is for the officers, we went around the back roads and went to the parking area. The parking lot is paid. It has a sunlit dirt parking lot with few trees. You can buy a ticket at the entrance. Those who want it have the opportunity to get an audio guide. They keep IDs for the audio guides. The historical artifacts are magnificent, very well preserved and it is a big area. It takes a long time to tour inside, it is useful to be careful considering the intense summer sun. We used shuttle buses on the way back. Although they are paid, they allowed us to travel half an hour in the heat in 5 minutes and cool down, I recommend it.

Beautiful, but..... To the readers who cherish a deep connection with heritage and history, I recently visited Agrigento and found myself awash with a whirlpool of emotions. A city as iconic as Agrigento, steeped in ancient splendor, unfortunately, now bears the weight of neglect. The vibrancy of its illustrious past seems to be overshadowed by the present air of abandonment. It pained me to draw parallels between Agrigento and cities like Calcutta, where an overwhelming sense of decay is palpable. It's distressing to observe how time, unchecked urbanization, and perhaps, lack of proper maintenance have rendered such a monumental city to a state of erosion. For someone like me, who derives spiritual solace from the past, witnessing Agrigento in its current state was like observing a masterpiece slowly losing its colors. I ardently hope for a revival, a resurgence of its former glory. Not just for the city's sake, but for every history and culture enthusiast who seeks profound connections in such historic realms.
Giuseppe F — Google review
The Valley of the Temples is the most important complex of ancient Greek temples outside Greece. Under the rule of the Carthaginians and the Romans, splendid temples sprang up one after another. Because of this, this valley town has also won the reputation of "Valley of Temples". Sicily, as a transportation fortress on the Mediterranean Sea, has always been the focus of political power struggles, with frequent wars, and many temple buildings were damaged to varying degrees during the war. Due to its relatively remote location, the Temple of the Valley has been perfectly preserved, and its integrity even surpasses the ancestor of the ancient Greek complex, the Temple of Athens itself. In the archaeological zone of Agrigento, there are more than 20 relics, but only 7 of them can be identified. The degree of integrity varies.

Church
Place of worship
In the heart of Agrigento, Italy, lies the Chiesa di Santa Maria dei Greci, a Norman church with a rich history. Constructed on the grounds of an ancient Greek temple dating back to the 5th century BC, this site has witnessed various rulers and cultural influences over time. The church features well-preserved Norman wooden ceilings and Byzantine frescoes that offer a glimpse into its storied past.
Very interesting and beautiful place. You can see and get close to the typical three steps of the Greek temple upon which the church is erected. The curch itself is a welcome difference to the baroque churches of Sicily with a rather humble decor and also murals dating almost a thousand years old and the glass floor, allowing you to see the underground of the church. The courtyard in front of the church is also beautiful and gets visited by cats, which I love. Best thing was the ticket vendor though. As all the staff of the church sights in Agrigento he was very friendly and helpful. Also well versed in English and apparently all Roman languages. He took his time to answer all questions I had regarding the church and the town. Clearly a professional in thing regarding archeology and history. I asked him a out a full 20 minutes.

Church of Santa Maria dei Greci: A hidden gem worth a visit. I recently visited the church of Santa Maria dei Greci and I must say that it is a true hidden gem, worth a visit if you are in Agrigento. The church is located in a somewhat remote location, but accessing it is easy and worth the effort. Inside, the atmosphere is truly evocative and the history of the place can be felt in every corner. The frescoes, decorations and the structure of the church itself tell the story of centuries of history and the cultures that have converged here. It is an experience that truly transports you back in time. The most interesting element is undoubtedly the opportunity to see the ruins of the Doric temple on which the church was built. It is fascinating to see how the foundations of the Greek temple have been incorporated into the medieval structure, creating a unique fusion of different eras and styles. The only downside, which I was really disappointed with, was that the elevator was not working. For those with mobility issues or who simply prefer to avoid stairs, this is a real drawback and a service that should never be missing from a place of such historical and cultural importance. I sincerely hope that it is repaired as soon as possible, as it prevents some people from fully enjoying this heritage. Despite this minor inconvenience, the visit was very enjoyable and I highly recommend it. If you are passionate about history, art and archaeology, you should not miss it.
John D — Google review
Chiesa di Santa Maria dei Greci was a simple yet memorable church. The fact that it was built over the foundation of an ancient Greek temple was particularly interesting. The preserved foundation was visible from above through a glass floor, and there have been ongoing restoration efforts. During one such restoration, a "putridarium" was uncovered. Per Wikipedia, a putridarium was a temporary burial place where bodies, commonly of monks or nuns, could be stored. This underground crypt in the Church of St. Mary of the Greeks was where members of the Brotherhood of Santa Maria dei Greci were allowed to dry, sitting on chairs made from living rock, to reach a proper stage of decomposition before the bones were collected for burial. We found it to be quite an intriguing approach to burial rites.

Ok, it's yet another church, one that you have to pay for! But you get a miny vr experience that's novel and you get to climb two bell towers (only the one closer to the entrance is worth it). Entrance fee is part of the combo ticket from valley of the temples. In retrospect I would just done the valley and (the recommended) archeological museum in only.

Cattedrale di San Gerlando is a grand Catholic church located at the highest point of Agrigento. This historic landmark boasts elaborate, art-covered ceilings and is renowned for its massive pipe organ. Originally built in the 12th century as a mosque, it was later converted into a Christian church after the Norman conquest of Sicily. The cathedral showcases fine examples of Norman-style architecture and has undergone various expansions and renovations over the centuries, resulting in a unique blend of architectural styles.
The entrance was cheap, 5 euro for all incl if you are 18-25. Looks beautiful and has a scenic view on the roof.

The Cathedral of San Gerlando is a beautiful piece of history right in the heart of Agrigento. Its mix of Norman and Baroque architecture makes it stand out, and the interior is peaceful, with stunning frescoes and intricate details. It’s not as crowded as the Valley of the Temples, so you can take your time exploring and appreciating the history. The bell tower offers nice views of the city if you manage to climb it. A quiet, spiritual stop that’s worth adding to your Agrigento itinerary.

Its an amazing cathedral, however some steps up to the tower seemes iffy to me and the view isnt that worth it. The ceiling view is though. Also I didnt particularly enjoy VR, but thats subjective. Still a place worth visiting.

A unique (and greatly preserved) architectonic jem narrating the history of the various architectonic stratification over time, starting from the XII century Norman influences and ending in the Sicilian baroque facade and apse of the second half of the XVII century. Access the tower to hear about the "Devil's Letter", a well documented Inquisition history, which is still haunted by mystery.

Luigi Pirandello Theatre in Agrigento, built in 1870 by the architect Giovan Battista and the engineer Dionisio Sciascia. In 1881, a grand inauguration took place, on the occasion of the visit of His Majesty Umberto I, King of Italy, and Queen Margherita. Mayor Girgenti presented Her Majesty the Queen with a parchment case regarding the baptism of the theatre, which was named "Queen Margherita". Since then, many theatre seasons have taken place and in particular there has been a great commitment to opera. There were many companies that performed on the stages of the Agrigento theatre. On 10 January 1938, the theatre was sold by the Municipality to a private company that used it as a cinema. In 1946 the theatre was named after Luigi Pirandello, but it operated for a few more years. In fact, it was closed to the public again in 1956 for renovation work and in the meantime it was returned to the municipal administration. Since then, the curtain of the "Pirandello" was reopened for the first time only in 1986, on the fiftieth anniversary of the death of the playwright from Agrigento, and then, finally, on April 29, 1995. On that historic day, Agrigento was able to welcome the President of the Republic Oscar Luigi Scalfaro. The "Luigi Pirandello" theatre returned to its city with the performance of Pirandello's opera "The Rattle Cap" and since then the artistic performances and theatrical seasons have succeeded each other with great audience participation.

I did not get sick and I am so thrilled with the food and experience! Thank you to the chefs, owners, and staff for being AIC accredited and being a place I can eat safely with peace of mind! Your food is amazing!

My wife and I have eaten here several times. The food and service always excellent. The dishes are surprisingly affordable. The atmosphere is very unhurried and peaceful. We both need to eat gluten free and we have always felt good after eating here. I highly recommend it for everyone, especially for the gluten free community - they are certified for providing means for people with Celiac disease.

The owner accommodated us late, and the moment we stepped in we were greeted with warm hospitality and a cozy ambiance. The food was delicious, and the tomatoes were very fresh.

I chose this place after looking for gluten-free options in Agrigento, and it did not disappoint! Everything we ordered - - caponata, local cheeses, pesto, a lovely dessert pairing oranges with pistachio gelato - - was absolutely delicious. The restaurant is small, cozy and looks to be family-run, with one kind and friendly server (maybe the owner?) taking care of all of the customers. Reasonable prices and relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere.

A modest atmosphere with an emphasis on food which is perfect.. Really nice people working there, very good service. Food was delicious for the eyes and stomach, wine especially tasty and strong. Prices are fair for the quality - not excessive. We had a really nice evening alltogether. Would recommend.

We came here for lunch and went back for dinner because the food is very good and interesting. We just wanted to try more of their dishes. It’s just away from the tourist places, very nice spot. Highly recommended it

Staying up the hill, this was the most accessible after a huge day of walking so we gave it a try. What a find! The cooking is just brilliant, and we had the best food in 3 months of travelling from Australia via Japan, India and Greece. We’ll return tomorrow night too, because it’s just so good, low key, quiet and terrific food. House wine excellent too (had the rose), couldn’t eat another crumb, all less than 50 euros for two. It won’t disappoint.

Good food, not amazing, specially the meat dish. I ordered it for a change but, although it was good, I imagine the fish must be better. Staff was very friendly and helpful!

Pastry shop
Nestled on the charming slope leading to the Cathedral, Pasticceria Rizzo is a modern and meticulously maintained establishment that boasts a rich history of over forty years in traditional pastry-making. This delightful spot is perfect for starting your day with a morning coffee paired with their exquisite ricotta cream-filled pastries. For those seeking something refreshing, their granitas and indulgent pistachio ice cream are must-tries.
Fabulous pasticceria and bar, that I highly recommend! I can't wait to go back to try their amazing looking pastries. This time I had pistacchio and Cassata gelato, and they were the best I've had so far in Sicily. Also, lovely outdoor seating with lovely views. Glad I accidentally came across it on the way to my accommodation.

I came here after seeing all the glowing reviews and high ratings, and we even walked uphill for about 10 minutes in the sun from our accommodation to try it. It definitely feels like a local spot, which I appreciated. Unfortunately, I was quite disappointed with what we tried. The cannolo had a very hard and dry shell, and the ricotta filling was overly sweet and didn’t taste very fresh. I also tried a pastry that I thought would be a ricotta cornetto, but it turned out to be more of a lemony, cookie-like dough with barely any filling — not my taste at all. We also shared a sandwich, which was again on the dry side. The cappuccino was fine but nothing special. Perhaps the cakes or ice cream are better, but based on what we had, I wouldn’t personally recommend it. There are definitely places with fresher options nearby.

Wonderful pastry shop! We had delicious cappuccino and croissants. They were very kind and helpful with ordering in English.

Wow!!!!! The best cassata and Genovese pastroes we have ever had! Great attention to customers, too!

Sitting here as I write this, because this cannoli is magical. I ordered a cappuccino and a cannolo. The cappuccino was great, but then I bit into the cannoli, and this is certainly the best cannoli I’ve ever had in my life. You don’t see them on display because they keep the materials in the back to prepare it fresh when you order. The shell is crisp and flaky, not greasy at all. The filling was still cool from being refrigerated, but very soft, and the perfect sweetness. The people are very friendly, the prices are, I expect, local prices, the cafe interior is lovely, and the patio views are wonderful. I will for sure be back!

Lovely place! The Aperol Spritz was spot on, the snacks were fresh and tasty, and the staff were super friendly and helpful with local tips. Highly recommended!

We love Rizzo’s, a beautiful walk up a small hill. A beautiful view with gorgeous lavender and rosemary bushes. The selection of savoury and sweet snacks are plenty . The service is great exceptional and the coffee is perfect balance of bitter and sweet

We were met by very nice people the second we got into the restaurant. We ordered 2 meat menus. And got the first dish in about 5 minutes. Perfect service.

We spent 3 evenings at this restaurant, it was very nice, the staffs are friendly and efficient. We had tasted the pizzas, pasta, risotto and some seafood, we were satisfied of all, prices are very reasonable!

Have eaten 2 fish menus here and I just cannot decide which one was better!

Recommended by our host. Very popular. Looks small but opens out into a large indoor and garden eating area. We were welcomed and helped although we spoke no Italian. Great pizzas. Really lovely evening. One waiter was unsure of what we wanted and so we waited a long time for someone to explain desserts but overall a great experience.
Lesley W — Google review
This place is a hidden gem. We came here after visiting the valley of temples, and we're extremely tired, hot and hungry. We were discouraged because most places close between 3-5 for fiesta but the owner here gladly welcome us in. The pizza was delicious!!! And at 4-7 Eur a pizza you can't beat that. The ambiance was homely and they had air conditioning as well which was appreciated. Do your self a favor and check this place out!!!

Worst restaurant experience ever! We ordered full menu and waited for food to arrive. Primi piatti came after two full hours! After two hours we asked the waiter whats going on with our food?! Than we got store bought pasta with basic souce that could have been made in 15 minutes. After that we decided that we had it... We said that we want a bill because we couldn't wait any longer and that we want to pay what we had (Guy at the check in at the appartment was waiting for us whole that time). After we asked for the bill and said that we have to go. They started bringing some salads like the secondi piatti is now being prepared or served... They intentionally wanted to force us to stay and ignored our request for a bill. After we isisted on payin just what we had, they wanted to charge the food they didn't serve! They were extremely rude and even said that we as guests had to know that there are many people in the restaurant!!! There were no apologies, even got some aggresion because they wanted to frighten us to charge it all. Never had that kind of experience in any restaurant that I ever visited. After we strongly isisted that we don't want to pay something that we never had,the guy saw that his little performance is not working so only than he made the bill with only that we actully had. Avoid this place...

Friendly people and amazing food. We stopped here after touring Valle dei Templi. The pizza was fantastic, the sausage simply perfect and the olive oil was so good we bought an entire liter to take home.
