Sulmona in 5 days

If you only have 5 days to spend in Sulmona, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Sulmona is a historic Abruzzo town known for its well-preserved medieval center, Roman ruins, and elegant Renaissance palaces. It’s famously the home of confetti (sugar-coated almonds), which fill colorful shop displays and feature prominently during local festivals. Set in the Valle Peligna and surrounded by the Majella mountains, Sulmona offers easy access to hiking, nature reserves, and scenic hill villages. Regular markets, traditional Easter and summer events, and regional cuisine give visitors a strong sense of central Italian life beyond the major tourist cities.
With favorites like Confetti Pelino, Bar Centrale & Central Pub, and L'osteria Del Tempo Perso, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Morsi Di Gusto Panino a km nome e cognome and Nin-Harra so you can get the best taste of Sulmona while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Specialty Museums
Museo Confetti Pelino, located just outside Sulmona, is a celebration of the history and production of the town's famous confetti. It is home to the oldest confetti company in Sulmona. Visitors can tour the facility and explore its museum, which offers insight into how the Pelino company started. The large retail store on-site provides various options for purchasing confetti, making it a great place to find unique gifts.
It’s our 2nd time in Sulmona to get Confetti and our 1st time visiting the museum. The museum is lovely, small and you can see it in less than 30 minutes. There’s a short video at the end that tells the story of confetti and it’s worth watching. At the end of the visit, there’s a shop and even though some of the shops in town are more lively, it still has this old-fashioned, vintage shop air and ambience that I so love about European shops in general. The ladies at the shop will let you try the different flavors, all you have to do is ask. Prices are reasonable and it’s a great gift idea for those who come from overseas and want to gift people back home. Pellino confetti are soft and delicious. It’s one of my favorite desserts in Italy

Very traditional. Every Italian marriage is usually gifted with one of these candied almond treats. Old factory which hasn't changed the way they create these treats and gifts, keeping the tradition alive.

Fabulous! Heard about it on Stanley Tucci's Disney+ show when it featured as part of his tour of Abruzzo and it did not disappoint. Delightful and helpful staff, amazing olde worlde shop and the most incredible array of confetti, very good prices too.

An Absolutely Beautiful Church
Williamson L — Google review
The complex dates back to the 14th century, initially serving as a hospital. Over time, it evolved to include a church, orphanage, and a confraternity dedicated to the Annunciation. The complex has undergone various transformations and expansions throughout the centuries, reflecting different architectural styles to include elements of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture. The complex was damaged by earthquakes, most significantly in 1706.

Porta Napoli is a stunning historical gateway that marks the entrance to Sulmona's charming city center. Originally part of a defensive wall with seven gates, it was constructed in the 14th century during a time when the city needed to expand due to population growth. This impressive structure not only serves as an architectural marvel but also as a cultural landmark, surrounded by rich monastic history and references to Pope Celestino V, one of Sulmona’s notable figures.
On the day of the celebration of the Immaculate Conception, a large wooden set of Joseph, Mary and the infant Jesus was set in the Porta Napoli. Spectacular.

Villa Comunale is a serene escape from the bustling crowds, featuring two expansive ponds with volcanic tuff fountains and charming tree-lined boulevards where locals leisurely pass the time. This tranquil park, built outside the city's original Medieval walls, is surrounded by elegant early 20th-century Liberty-style houses and offers a pleasant stroll down to the Cathedral of San Panfilo. Visitors can enjoy picturesque views, shaded resting spots, and colorful displays in spring and fall.
The Villa is a beautiful park and a great place to walk (and walk your dog). Fall and spring are very colorful.

Located outside the historic center of Sulmona, Italy, the Cathedral of San Panfilo is a popular attraction. Dedicated to the patron saint of Sulmona, it houses relics that are carried in procession every year on April 28th. The cathedral's architecture is a blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles dating back to the 11th century. It features a crypt from the eighth century and has been influenced by Baroque and Renaissance styles over time.
San Panfilo Cathedral is a complicated mix or Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque architecture (being result of two catastrophe earthquakes of 1456 and 1706). I recommend to look at Romanesque apses, Gothic portal, two medieval tombs and wonderful crypt
Sibeaster — Google review
Coming from the railway station it should be your first stop. It is a roman church with a crypt from the eight century. During the years the church has got baroque and renaissance influence. There is a lot to see and I spent there more than an hour to enjoy all the details. Don’t mis the 14 th century Crucifixion fresco, the charming Madonna of the furnaces (11th century), Chapel of S. Panfilo (who saved the city from the plague), the organ at the entrance and the crypt with the fine marble entrance.

A rich and nicely decorated Vatican Church. I did appriciate the marbel and granit works. Aswell the writings on the inner chapel which every chriatian should follow, expecially the second one which states "Da qui si esce per amare il prossimo." Something that the same Vatican should learn to follow.

Morsi Di Gusto Panino a km nome e cognome is an exceptional sandwich shop that offers delectable sandwiches made with fresh ingredients and delightful flavor combinations. The staff is amiable, and the location in the historical town centre allows for outdoor dining. Moreover, there is no need to go through the trouble of translating an Italian menu as there is an English menu conveniently placed on the wall inside the bistro.
We enjoyed lovely vegan sandwiches from this cute shop. The person who prepared our sandwiches took great care in putting together all the super fresh ingredients and making sure the fillings were all well distributed. The sandwich was delicious - especially enjoyed the spicy mustard sauce. There are a few counter seats inside and benches outside. Prices are very reasonable.

One of the most delicious sandwiches I’ve ever tried, fresh ingredients and really good combinations of flavors. Friendly staff and great location, you can eat it outside in the historical town centre. Btw, if you are looking for an english menu, there is no need to take a picture of the Italian one and translate with Google like we did, when you enter the bistro, just turn around and there is an English menu on the wall behind you. :) We highly recommend to try the sandwiches and will definitely come back if we visit Sulmona in the future. 5/5 ⭐️🥪

I was touring from Canada and me and my friends decided to stop at this fine sandwich establishment. This was the best sandwich I ever had in my life. For only 5€, you can get a whole footlong sandwich loaded with meat. Upon finishing my sandwich, I was left with a sense of awe, and my mouth felt as if it was experiencing the best meal ever. The staff were also very helpful and spoke english. Anyone who is looking for an amazing lunch or dinner, maybe even breakfast would enjoy this very much.

This place is amazing. I was overwhelmed by the number of options available, but luckily the nice lady behind the counter gave her recommendation, and oh man, she did recommend. In most cases I am cautious with prosciuto crudo, but it was somehow easy to bite into, and the lemon-infused olive oil with the combination of Parmeggiano Reggiano, excellent. Really. Thank you! P.s. the music was great (some alter-metal-rock. Nice one :D ).

I will say that I am a bit bias in liking this pizzeria. I was one of the English teachers that had recently been teaching in schools in Sulmona, and on our first day teaching, the owner's daughter (if I am correct in my limited understanding of Italian) asked me and my classmates for our coffee order to welcome us to Sulmona, and to teaching her and class. When we tried to decline, she insisted on it! It made us feel so welcomed and really was one of the highlights of our experience there. We made a point to go there during our breaks in the days that followed. The coffee was very well priced, and the pizza was wonderful. While the tea was too expensive for my liking, (€3.50), I would factor that to it being a predominately coffee drinking country, instead of tea drinking one. My classmates were able to enjoy their espresso for just over €1.00. While I won't say the owners daughter's name, this message is to her: Thank you so much for welcoming us to your town, and school, and for you and your classmates being wonderful students.

Day 2

Off the beaten path
For day 2, if you don’t mind the extra trek, today covers more off the beaten path places like National Archaeological Museum of Palestrina. Not quite as popular as Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi, but still highly rated among many travelers. Accounting for getting around and average time spent, today’s activities could take about 8 hours.

The National Archaeological Museum of Palestrina, housed in a grand palace designed by three renowned architects, exhibits ancient art and artifacts in an elegant setting. The museum features Hellenistic statues displayed within the semicircular shape and materials of a former Roman theatre, overlooking a panoramic view of hills and distant sea. The sanctuary finds are well-explained in Italian and English while the Nile mosaic is particularly impressive.
A must-see place, take a day off and enjoy this unique spectacle.

It's a mystery why this museum is not more popular. Perhaps Palestrina is possibly not "en route" for many tourists, but the museum offers a very interesting collection of statues, mosaics, murals, vases, and other objects from antiquity, Greek & Roman. Building itself is also fascinating since it is based on a Roman temple of Fortuna Primigenia, with columns on the 1st floor visible.. The entrance fee is very reasonable...

Elegance inside elegance. Ellenistic statues in a 1500 palace with the semicircular shape and materials of the previous roman theatre. Everything overlooking plane circled by soft hills and the sea far away. Worth a vist just for the container. The content goes well beyond the descriptions of even careful guides. Alas no electronic payments for tickets...

Bed & breakfast
B&B Il Marchese del Grillo is a charming bed and breakfast with warmly decorated rooms, a courtyard, and a garden. Guests have praised the host, Marta, for her exceptional hospitality and the beautiful property. The rooftop breakfast is particularly delightful, featuring homemade baked goods and local delicacies. Visitors have also appreciated the cleanliness of the rooms and Marta's personalized care during their stay.
One of our favorite stops this trip. We travel to Italy each year to explore different areas. We absolutely loved this b&b, I only wished we stayed for more than 2 nights. Marta is an amazing hostess with far better English than my Italian. She was so accommodating, kind, and helpful. We sadly had an early train to catch and wanted to make arrangements for a taxi, which she kindly did for us as well as provided an early breakfast (before normal hours) still offering everything to us. Breakfast included bakery items, fresh fruit and yogurt, made to order eggs and coffee / cappuccino, etc. All very well done. Couldn't have asked for more. The check-in went very well. The room was amazing. It is very clean and very fresh (no damp old building smell). Nice hot shower. I will stay here again and I can't wait. Highly recommend! Marta- thank you for everything!!

We got to our room, and it was fun that the owner of the place, Marta, received us. The room is clean and tidy and the breakfast is particularly indulgent: fruit, yogurt and muesli, any egg and bread you like. A lovely place with a balcony for an amazing sunset. . Recommend with love

Buonvento is a popular restaurant located on Piazza Plebiscito 21/22 in Sulmona. The restaurant boasts a wonderful ambience with quirky decor adorning the walls, window sills, and even the restroom. It is described as a very busy restaurant with outside seating and courteous multilingual waitstaff. Visitors have praised the authentic regional cuisine served at Buonvento, making it a must-visit for anyone looking to experience delicious Italian Mediterranean dishes.
Great restaurant! The menu is very limited, but each dish I tried was excellent. The atmosphere is enjoyable, and the service is very friendly. On my solo lunch in early November, I ordered the Gnocchi Zucca Guanciale e Pecorino for my main meal, and had the tiramisù for dessert. Delicious but a little expensive!

This is by far the best restaurant we have found in Sulmona. Everything is delicious and we’ve tried quite a bit of it 😊 We were in Sulmona for a total of 11 days, we found this place day 5 and never looked back. Great food, perfect pasta, lamb out of this world and wine!!! The atmosphere is charming and makes you feel like you’re at an Italian family dinner on a Sunday. The staff is delightful and gracious even with our limited Italian, they treated us like family. The owner is kind and attentive ( easy on the eyes 👀) If you’re in the area it is a must on your list.

This is an unmossable experience I came alone but the vibe was incredible and the food very local and fresh. Wine was on another level if you are into natural wine this is a haven of incredible local wine and from other parts of Europe.... Can't speak more highly of this place 😍

Update: I returned this past Friday night in early September 2021 and I have to say the menu just wasn’t the same. We had the same waiter Edmund and he was again, excellent! The hit of my last visit - pasta w cream sauce - was not available and the other pasta dishes paired in comparison. We did try the local fried cheese balls in Ragu and they were very tasty. It’s still a nice place, but I was a bit disappointed without that creamy past dish that brought me back. ——————— Original review June 2021 If you’re in Sulmona - you want to eat here!! A very pleasant atmosphere on a side street with a view of a 14th century church and filled with locals - locals so friendly, they insisted that we sample their wine! The waiter spoke fluent English and made fantastic recommendations for sampling a few dishes and sharing others, so as to not just run up our bill, but allow us to try the local specialties. The pasta with cream and sausage was the highlight dish! A wonderful meal and true taste of L’aquila region!

Great restaurant in Sulmona. Both food and service were very good. We ordered mostly whatever counts as local dishes. Cacio e Uva is a must, the chitara primi is delicious - ask for the spicy oil on the side and mix it into it for additional pleasure. They also had a delicious pasta with ragu and red wine which was very unique and delicious for me. They also have a wide and quality selection of wines. The place itself looka very welcoming.

Italian restaurant
Ristorante Clemente, located in a new venue since 2013 but still in the historic center, offers excellent value for money and a chance to savor regional specialties made with carefully selected local ingredients. One of their standout dishes is the creamy saffron pappardelle with guanciale, ricotta, and pecorino.
We had dined here years ago and decided to return - we were not disappointed! Perhaps the best restaurant in Sulmona! The waitress was excellent and helped us (a party of six, two couple and two teen boys) through the ordering and helped us make the right selections - particularly challenging as our friends are gluten free. We all managed a pasta and some meat dishes were shared along with a few contorni. Pasta w saffron was a hit - both w gluten and without. Same for the pasta Clemente or house special. My son really like his lamb and everything else was hot and tasty all around! If you’re in Sulmona, make a reservation and dine here, it’s excellent!

A beautiful place to dine if you're ever in Sulmona. The food was amazing and the staff are funny and friendly. So much so, we came back the next night again for dinner. I highly recommend the vegetarian platter with its array of tapas style dishes that were all delicious. The gnocchi is simple but full of flavour, crazy right? The ragu melted in your mouth and flavoursome. It gets pretty busy and books out quickly. We were smart enough to arrive just as dinner service started so we were lucky to get a table.

A lovely authentic family restaurant. Tasty pasta, the grilled lamb perfectly cooked, excellent wine choices. We loved this restaurant and we will come back. Make a booking, as they were turning customers away. Easy access from the main part of Sulmona town.
Nigel M — Google review
The food is great but the service is terrible. They base the service on the importance of clients rather than a first come, first serve operation. Waitresses are not observant to customers with tunnel vision. We waited 40 minutes to get our deserts repeatedly asking for the menu. I have been to better restaurants. Not recommended

A must-visit gem in Abruzzo! Clemente was one of our most memorable meals in Italy. Recommended by our B&B, this place absolutely delivered — from the generous hospitality to the amazing food. We started with the mixed appetizer platter, which was huge and filled with unique regional flavors — including perfectly prepared lamb offal that reinforced our belief that Abruzzo chefs are meat masters. Even the little amuse-bouche (a crispy fried dough with soft cheese) was delicious. The Tagliatelle verdi con ragù del cortile had a lovely, layered poultry ragu (chicken, duck, turkey, rabbit) with refreshing flavors, though the pasta was a bit soft for our taste. Still very good. The Farfalle alla Clemente — their signature dish — was the star. Don’t be fooled by the homey look: the sauce with prosciutto, spinach, and mushrooms was incredibly rich, savory, and balanced. No sheep cheese, so safe for picky eaters too! The grilled veal steak was perfectly done — medium rare, beautifully seared, tender and juicy with just the right amount of fat. Abruzzo knows how to handle its meats! To top it all off, they surprised us with complimentary dessert and sweet wine when they found out it was our birthday. One of the servers even shared that his birthday was the the next day — such a sweet moment! Excellent food, nice wines, great prices, and truly heartwarming service. Clemente has earned every Michelin mention and more.

Our B&B recommended this place and everything was wonderful. Highly recommend getting the Clementine (their signature pasta), simple yet so flavorful. The meats were cooked to perfection in the griliata mista. We did not enjoy Maccheroni alla chitarra con ricotta Cremona allo zafferano aquilano, guanciale croccante e pecorino - it was a bit too greasy for my liking. We also enjoyed a plate cicoria. Service was great also!

Very nice. Well priced. First course we took the abbruzo starter typical dishes for e18 which we managed to eat between two. 10 different dishes, then we had a pasta macaroni ordered as main course but we couldn't manage to eat not even half. Nestled in the serene landscape of Abruzzo, the Abbazia di Santo Spirito del Morrone is a hidden gem that beckons to those who seek tranquility and history. Founded by Peter of Morrone, a Benedictine monk and later Pope Celestine V, this abbey has roots dating back to the 13th century. Although currently undergoing restoration, its charm remains undeniable.
The building inside has mazingly beautiful paintings and ceilings dating from 12th century. Well worth a visit but make sure it's open. We went on a Sunday afternoon and were surprised it was open. There was a guide who was very informative

This former abbacy was once the main convent of Celestinians - followers of st Pope Celestin V. Now we can see the result of reconstructions of XVIII century so it's not as old as I want))) Moreover after secularization the convent "works" as a prison and most part of its treasuries were taken to museums or thieved. So it's more like nut-shell than real nut but it's still impressive. You can visit three cloisters of five, the former church, refectorium and library Be careful: the convent is open for visitors with very strange timetable (see one of the photos)

Located beneath the SantOnofrio hermitage, the sanctuary known as Area Archeologica di Ercole Curino was initially believed to be Ovid's residence before being unveiled in the 1950s. However, subsequent discovery of statues confirmed its true purpose as an ancient Roman shrine dedicated to Hercules. The sanctuary encompasses multiple mountainside terraces with well-preserved foundational remnants and a sheltered wooden hut housing a valuable mosaic floor.

(Translated by Google) “The archaeological park of the Sanctuary of Ercole Curino was established in the 70s of the last century in the municipal area of Sulmona. Located on the slopes of Mount Morrone, in the Badia area, the terraced sanctuary is one of the most important sacred areas in the whole of Abruzzo. It is built on artificial terraces that define the sacred spaces sloping down the mountain slope: the first building phase is documented on the highest level, with a temple on a high podium. The subsequent expansion of the terrace saw the construction of the so-called chapel with the monumental steps interrupted by the paved square at the base of which the porticoes of the large space overlooking the Peligna basin opened. The general renovation of the plant dates back to the beginning of the 1st century. to. C., with a lower terrace, supported by an imposing wall in almost reticulated work on which a series of vaulted rooms are set below the square. The wealth and fame of the sanctuary were not lost with the abandonment of the place due to a landslide that buried the buildings. The spread of Christianity preserved the sacredness of the place, as evidenced by the construction, on the edge of the pagan sanctuary, of a small church subsequently enlarged by Pope Celestine V (13th century). The excavations, which began in 1957, initially led to the assumption of the presence of Ovid's villa, but then revealed the site of an Italic sanctuary, dedicated to Hercules as demonstrated by the type of votive material found and the dedication inscriptions. The upper part of the sanctuary was buried by an ancient landslide around the 2nd century AD; However, the use of the site did not stop completely, as evidenced by the addition of a church in the Christian era, close to the southern staircase.”

(Translated by Google) Currently, to reach this open and free archaeological site, park at the second barrier along the access road. Park in a space in front of it and walk uphill for about 20 minutes to a serviced area. Behind the area (facing the road if you're coming up) is the site sign and the open gate. A 10-15 minute downhill path leads to the archaeological area. From the reconstruction and the explanations on the signs, it must have been an important site. A mosaic with remains of walls are housed in a structure visible from the outside through glass. It's a shame that the site isn't in perfect condition. The glass is very dirty, and the mosaic is covered in a carpet of earthworms, a sign that it hasn't been cleaned in a long time. The view is beautiful, and you can still appreciate the magnificence of the place.

It's a shame that it isn't particularly well looked after: there are explanatory posters burnt by years of sun and rain, making them often illegible, and waste containers that are rarely emptied. It would perhaps be worth charging a small fee for entry and having greater protection. At the moment access is free, to the point that there is no type of control. From the square below, equipped with benches, shelters, and tables, it's a twenty-minute climb up stairs and ramps, but it's well worth it. On the way up, you can enjoy the panoramic views of the abbey below, the World War II detention camp known as 78, and the archaeological site. Accessible from the square described above, via a short 10-15 minute walk, the hermitage is spread across several levels, from the cave below to the small church with adjoining rooms where Celestine, before he became Pope, meditated and lived. The upper floor contains a kitchen, two bedrooms, and a dining room, which served as a resting place and refreshment for the clergy who occasionally ascended to the hermitage. From the upper floor, there is access to a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the entire valley. Currently, before reaching the square, by municipal decree, you must park your car below the height of a barrier. From the barrier to the parking lot, it's another 20 minutes on a paved road, sometimes shaded by trees. I can assure you that the effort of climbing will be well worth it. Take your time, enjoy the view during the climb, and you'll be rewarded once you reach the top. Parking is available in the valley, and reaching the hermitage takes about 20 minutes uphill on a paved road and another 20 minutes on a dirt road, also uphill. The journey is worth it, however, as it's truly rich in history and boasts spectacular views. It's best not to go on sunny summer days because there's no shade, and especially no water. Furthermore, sneakers or hiking shoes are a must for a route like this. This former military barracks, now abandoned and overrun by nature, offers a glimpse into the past where countless lives were confined during the early 1900s. Visitors can access the camp from behind the main road and explore its intriguing remnants.
So full of history and in such a beautiful place ,the heart of Abruzzo. The local Italian people many of whom risked their lives to help prisoners escape from the Germans during the second world war have merited the thanks of so many prisoners who lived

(Translated by Google) The entrance is at the back of the main road (if you turn around you will find it).. and it is always open as it is a military barracks abandoned for some time, where neglect reigns and vegetation has taken over, however very fascinating which is why I give it 4 stars.. if those walls could speak who knows how many pains and stories they would tell, human lives locked up in those dormitories in the early 1900s... of different nationalities, different languages, different flattened cultures from a single word "captivity". If it were in Germany it would have already become a famous world-famous memorial museum.. but unfortunately it is in Italy.. and it is just a barracks abandoned to itself. If you are passing through I recommend a visit. The gate is bolted, without any timetable or contact information, the perimeter wall has been refurbished and not even a crack to take a photo (except for a side gate which allows a photo). When I went to the tourist office in Sulmona they told me that: send an email to the councilor for culture of the municipality who will contact whoever manages the structure who will come and open it if he has time. But also contact us in front of the door, right? However, seen from above and from this rear gate, everything still seems quite well kept. It's a shame all these difficulties to show us a piece of history, even if it's ugly.

(Translated by Google) Here I live in Sulmona, the third district of the Peligni. The district, rich in water, though small, is healthy. Let the sun's rays heat the earth to the point of cracks, Let the evil star of the Icarian dog shine, - Streams of running water irrigate the fields of the Peligni; The rich soil is loose, the grasses are lush in the meadows. Here are abundant grains, grapes even more abundant, And in some plots there are even the fruits of Pallas. Here the grass is green, everywhere where streams flow, The grassy cover has clothed the damp earth with shadow. Only my fire is missing... No, I was wrong in my expression: Only the cause of the fire is missing, but the flame itself is with me. If I were settled between Castor and Pollux, And in heaven without you I would not want to live! Let the earth be heavy, let eternal sleep be restless For those who have furrowed the whole world with many long roads! At least they would have ordered the maidens to follow the young men, If they were to furrow the world with many long roads... But I, when I had to freeze in the windy Alps, I would consider my path easy, if I were alone with my mistress. With my dear one I would decide to swim across the Libyan Sirtes And let the fickle Notes carry my sail. No, neither sea monsters, barking under a maiden's bosom, I would not be afraid, nor you, the crooked rock of Malea Not even Charybdis herself, who, having had her fill of sinking ships, Spewing out water, again sucks in her empty mouth, But if the force of the winds overcomes Neptune himself And the waters carry away the gods who are kind to me, Put your snow-white hands on my shoulders, - I will swim without effort with my light burden. Young lover Hero often swam to her by sea... He could have swum across that time too... only the night was dark. But without you... Let the lands abundant with grapes Here surround me, the streams water the field, The farmer drives obedient waters to himself in the ditches, Let the fresh breeze caress the hair of the trees, - I still do not want to glorify the healing land of the Peligni, Villages - the heritage of the fathers, - the place where I was born. I will glorify the Scythians sooner, the Cilician savages, the Britons, The rocks that turned red, having absorbed the blood of Prometheus... The elm will love the vine - and the vine will not leave the elm... But why do I languish from the mistress in the distance? Remember, did you not swear to be my constant companion, Swear by me and your eyes, the stars of my life? I see, the maiden's words are like falling leaves, - The evil wind carries them, rushes, running away, like a wave... No, if you have preserved even a share of care for me, Then it is time to add deeds to your promises, The chariot is waiting, hurry! The hot pacers are tearing. Tighten the reins yourself between the unfurled manes! But you, haughty mountains, humble yourself in her path, - In your crooked valleys, may her path be easy!

(Translated by Google) In the evocative setting of Piazza XX Settembre in Sulmona, the statue of Ovid is not just a monument, but a true dialogue with history. His figure, sculpted in bronze, celebrates not simply a poet, but the soul of a city that for centuries has proudly borne the name of its most illustrious son. Ovid, with his thoughtful gaze ideally turned toward Rome, the city that exiled him and to which he never stopped writing, seems to tell a story of love and pain, of success and exile. The statue, the work of sculptor Ettore Ferrari, is a constant reminder of the power of culture and words, capable of overcoming the injustices of time and space. Seeing it there, amid the pulsating life of the square, amid the bustle of passersby and the sound of conversation, makes one reflect on how art and poetry still remain a common thread linking the past to the present. It is an invitation to rediscover his works, to understand his spirit, and to feel the profound connection between the great poet and his hometown.

Bed & breakfast
Sulmona offers a variety of excellent accommodations, including B&B Sei Stelle. This bed-and-breakfast is situated near Piazza Garibaldi and is owned by renowned Boston restauranteur Filippo Frattaroli, who hails from Sulmona himself. Another notable option is Hotel Rojan, a well-regarded four-star hotel located just off Corso Ovidio.
This place is outstanding!!. Davide won't make you feel like family while giving you all the private time you would like. Extremely helpful and hospitable. The location is a 10!!!! Cannot beat the location right on the aqueduct. Part of the aqueduct is actually in the building. The rooms are very, very clean. Everyone who works here is very kind and always ready to welcome you with a smile. This is our second time staying here. The breakfast is fresh, made to order and delicious

Outstanding location, amenities, value and service. Our family has stayed at Sei Stella on multiple occasions and the experience has been beyond the highest expectations. The host David is superb.

Just the best accommodation we have experienced in Europe for years! Davide was an excellent host, breakfast was superb with a great choice, the room was beautiful, and the whole house was in top condition and a very relaxing place to be. Location right on the main piazza in Sulmona was the best, and parking availability just 200 metres away underground was perfect. We stayed for just 2 nights in early October, before flying home from Rome, would have liked to stay longer! We hope to be able to stay there again, and can recommend to anyone. We have no connection with B&B Sei Stelle except as happy customers.

This was our favorite accommodation on our honeymoon. Davide the manager was an amazing host. The rooms were lovely and the communal area overlooking the square is so beautiful, as is Sulmona. There's also cheap parking nearby. Breakfast was delicious, and the staff were really friendly and chatty.

Perfect location in the heart of Sulmona. Comfortable room in a beautiful historic building. Hot breakfast with coffee made to order every morning. Davide was a great host. He gave each guest personal attention, made reservations at the best restaurants in town and offered suggestions for exploring the area. We highly recommend B&B Sei Stelle

There are so many aspects that made this stay one of our most enjoyable during our tour of Italy! Firstly, the picturesque village of Sulmona gave us a lovely feel of authentic italy. Then staying at the Sei Stelle rounded it off! Our host, Davide, was incredible. Great contact before we arrived, directed me to the car park in person, gave us some great recommendations for food - all before we checked in! On checking in, the room was amazing! The living areas was huge. Lovely comfortable couches, a nice terrace to overlook the main square. The bedroom was similarly big with a lovely comfortable bed. The bathroom, again, lovely with a nice shower in it. Breakfast was just amazing, overlooking the main square from the terrace, with our pre-ordered choices of croissants, pastries, juices, served with some typically wonderful Italian coffee. We cannot recommend this place enough, and the host, Davide. We really hope to be fortunate enough to go back again one day. Book the Sei Stelle, you will not regret it.

Maiella, a limestone massif located in a national park, is a popular destination for outdoor activities such as cycling tours. The area is also known for the pristine Green River and the town of Fara San Martino, famous for its pasta production. Decontra, a picturesque village in Maiella Mountains, offers stunning mountain vistas and tranquility. Additionally, Maiella National Park is home to the endangered marsican brown bears and features challenging off-trail routes for adventurous hikers.
Unique mountain range, there are several shelters, both free and not, where you can spend the night comfortably, obviously well equipped with clothing. A place really rich in everything that a lover of nature seeks, for example caves, such as that of the horse, river, waterfalls, old abbeys in the mountain, not to mention the view once you get to the top of the mountain bitter, in fact, with very clear air, you can clearly see the Adriatic Sea, the mountain range is very similar to the Dolomites, for that is suggestive in central Italy ... Magnificent place both in winter, with special equipment, but also in summer with the mountain bare.

The Locanda Medievale restaurant boasts an excellent position, conveniently situated near the main square. While the cuisine may be considered average, patrons can expect exceptional service from attentive and friendly waitstaff. The establishment is highly regarded for its impeccable location and pleasant dining experience.
We came on a Saturday evening at 1845 hrs in late March. No reservation is needed. This place opens earlier than others nearby. Menu has English subtitles. One of the two servers spoke English. We felt the food was of very high quality, with generous portion size. We enjoyed the bean soup, the Caprese salad, a pasta dish, and the chicken dish. Everything was delicious and well presented. We chose the house wine at 4 euros per glass and it was quite nice. Beautiful music was playing, which complimented the historic and interesting decor. I am sure we will be back this week!

Really nice restaurant on one of the main squares. They accommodated us even tho they were almost closing, so we really appreciated it. The dishes were tasty and served in good portions, we also loved the medieval decorations. The only thing I would say is that I was expecting to find more traditional dishes on the menu, while I had the impression that they had the classic traditional dishes that you can find all around Italy.

The Angello was excellent and the antipasto was good but the vegetables were a little over cooked but delicious. I was the only customer at 19:45. Because it was so quiet, I could hear the music playing in kitchen... an Irish concert. Great singing. They let me sit there drinking water to listen to the music..my wife, who died 2 years ago, loved her Irish music.

Food quite bad, one of the waiter wasn’t even willing to put the plates on the table for the costumers,l. when politely we let the waitress know of the flavorless of our meal she accused us that it’s our fault that we eat too salty and nobody else complained. A “we are sorry” would Have been a better reply. Just stay away

It’s hard to get a bad meal in Italy… unless you eat at a bar. And Locanda Medievale is A BAR. We were here and nothing else was open/avail on a Sunday evening, so we made do. Plan better - make an rsvp elsewhere. Otherwise the wine, location and hospitality were great, but the food was below average. Bread was not good, I had the white pork and it was tough and dry. The house wine was good and a bargain. The tiramisu was good.

During my recent exploration of Sulmona, I made a delightful stop at the Museo Civico e Archeologico, which is nestled within the historic Santissima Annunziata complex. Although some sections were closed during my visit, I was thrilled to discover the open rooms showcasing an impressive array of artifacts. The museum boasts a rich collection that spans from Paleolithic finds to exquisite Renaissance sculptures, offering a fascinating glimpse into the region's history.
Wonderful museum! My family and I enjoyed going and will be back.

The most interesting thing of this museum is facade - mix of several styles (Gothic, Renaissance, Mannerism). The museum consists of some sections, for me the most interesting one was that of medieval art. In my time (November 2024) the ticket was 5 euro (only Museo civico) or 8 euro (combined with Diocesan museum)

A section shows traditional Abruzzo clothes from the areas around Sulmona together with some work tools. The medieval and modern art section on the upper floor includes altarpieces, canvases and panels taken from nearby religious centers. A thorough visit takes about 2 hours, even a little more. The entrance is not very clear, the cost of the visit is €4.5, they gave us the option of purchasing the €7 combined ticket to also have access to the art gallery in Piazza Garibaldi (much better than this museum). I recommend going there only, the counter doesn't accept debit cards, only cash, they made us pay €7 over the phone (slow procedure) but €6 was written on the ticket. The only interesting room is that of the Middle Ages and costumes, there is no heating and it is very cold inside (if you go in winter), so I suggest a visit in the warmer months, overall it didn't excite me, there are more interesting archaeological museums in both Abruzzo and Molise. Quick visit, not a long route. Drinking water fountain
Sights & Landmarks
Fountains
Nestled in the charming town of Sulmona, Italy, the Vecchio Fountain is a stunning historical landmark that dates back to the 15th century. This beautiful fountain features two levels, with its lower section boasting four basins designed for handwashing. The fountain derives its name from a striking bearded face that represents an old man, from which refreshing drinking water flows—an inviting sight on hot summer days when visitors are tempted to cool off under its icy stream.
(Translated by Google) Excellent drinking water from this beautiful fountain set in the Mediterranean aqueduct. I add some historical information. The Fontana del Vecchio was built in 1474 by Captain Polidoro Tiberti from Cesena, and is one of the most important testimonies of the Sulmona Renaissance period. On the slab above there is the inscription: “POLYDORUS TYBERTUS CAESENAS PRAETOR SULMONIS CLARUS ET INSIGNIS SUB INVICTIS SIMO REGE FERDINANDO QUOI PRAETAER SICILIE REGNUM YTALIAM OMNEM PACE SE (davi) T OPUS HOC NOBILE STRUXIT ET VIAS URBIS STAERNENS MARMORE INCRUSTAVIT MCCCCLXXIIII”. It takes its name from the "bearded head that dominates the lunette set on the entablature on which the inscription with the date and name of the client is engraved. It has retained the upper part of the original structure, with the entablature and the semicircular pediment, while the basin, which was originally made up of smooth stone slabs, was replaced in 1901 with one of the sarcophagus type. The Aragonese coat of arms is carved into the lunette of the pediment, placed in the center of a garland of flowers and fruit supported by two angels. The frieze below shows two coats of arms of Sulmona at the ends with the initials S. M. P. E. The fountain is completed by two flower-shaped lateral twigs, while the acroterion is formed by a bearded head (from where the water flows) between two rosettes joined by a ribbon bearing the writing Vechio (Original) Ottima acqua potabile a questa bella fontana incastonata nell' acquedotto medirvale. Aggiungo qualche notizia storica. La Fontana del Vecchio venne fatta costruire nel 1474 dal capitano Polidoro Tiberti da Cesena, ed è una delle più importanti testimonianze del periodo rinascimentale sulmonese. Nella lastra soprastante  è riportata l’iscrizione: “POLYDORUS TYBERTUS CAESENAS PRAETOR SULMONIS CLARUS ET INSIGNIS SUB INVICTIS SIMO REGE FERDINANDO QUOI PRAETAER SICILIE REGNUM YTALIAM OMNEM PACE SE (davi) T OPUS HOC NOBILE STRUXIT ET VIAS URBIS STAERNENS MARMORE INCRUSTAVIT MCCCCLXXIIII”.

The Museo della Diocesi Valva Sulmona is a must-see for its unique pastoral display featuring a dragon, something that has never been seen before. The handcrafted crib is exceptionally beautiful, with numerous intricate details and scenes depicted by small characters. It's worth taking the time to carefully observe and appreciate the many specific elements of the crib. Additionally, this museum houses an impressive collection of paintings that combines both contemporary and classical art. The contemporary section is particularly outstanding.
A very interesting museum, thanks!

Fontanone Monumentale is a Baroque fountain located in the center of Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi in Sulmona. It was added in 1823 and offers a stunning view of the Majella and Morrone mountains. The unfinished fountain has an unusual legacy, with the pitch beyond its three arches being named 'fish square.' Visitors can enjoy the sight, especially at dusk while indulging in ice cream on the staircase connecting the square to Corso Ovidio.

By accident, we stumbled upon Camilla's bistrot when its kitchen was closed. However, the owner kindly offered us two delicious pizzas and a selection of cold cuts. Outstanding food in a casual atmosphere. Pasta with meat was Abruzzo style, we received excellent fresh pasta Al dente with a generous piece of beef braised in the sauce and still on the bone. No unidentified ground meat in this sauce. Sides of vegetables were all fresh and flavorful. Perfect pizza, absolute bliss! And I've been to Napoli many times, yes. The part that I loved as much though was the choice of "birre artigianale". Highly recommended! Great service too

Nestled in the heart of Sulmona, the Chiesa di San Filippo Neri is a cherished landmark that resonates deeply with locals. This charming baroque church, which dates back to the 17th century, offers an intimate atmosphere as it overlooks a picturesque square in the historic center.
(Translated by Google) The Church of San Filippo Neri occupies a special place in the hearts of the inhabitants of Sulmona. It is precisely here, in fact, that the Virgin dressed in mourning receives the news of the resurrection of her son during the rite of the Madonna who runs away, the most famous and folkloristic Easter celebration in all of Abruzzo. Its construction dates back to the 17th century, although the last stone was officially laid only in the second half of the 17th century. The earthquake of 1706 then forced the city of Sulmona to rebuild the building, which today has one of the most particular façades in Italy. The facade, which belonged to the pre-existing church dedicated to Sant'Agostino, appears almost unfinished, due to its square shape and its decoration reduced to a minimum. The portal is especially striking, one of the most refined examples of Abruzzo Gothic art.

(Translated by Google) This beautiful baroque church, small and intimate, indulgently observes the square in the historic center of Sulmona from above. The peculiarity of its Gothic façade is constituted by the fact that it originally belonged to the Church of S. Agostino, which was destroyed following the earthquake that struck Abruzzo in 1706. Subsequently, in 1885, the people of Sulmona had the original idea of transferring it and placing it above that of San Filippo Neri. The interior in Spanish Baroque style, remodeled after the 18th century earthquake, has a nave with two domes that joyfully illuminate the light walls, giving a sense of proud whiteness that embraces and envelops the faithful.
