Mechelen in 5 days

If you only have 5 days to spend in Mechelen, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Mechelen is a compact historic city known for its well-preserved medieval core and impressive Gothic architecture, including St. Rumbold’s Cathedral with its UNESCO-listed belfry tower. Its car-free center, lined with gabled houses and attractive squares, makes it easy to explore on foot between museums, churches and canalside spots. Located between Brussels and Antwerp with frequent train connections, it works well as a base for day trips while offering a quieter, small-city atmosphere. Families are also drawn to attractions like Technopolis science center and the city’s long tradition of carillon music.
With favorites like Vrijbroekpark, Municipal Theater Mechelen, and The Chick Mechelen, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Pizza Hut Delivery and Zorba so you can get the best taste of Mechelen while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Parks
ZOO Planckendael, located in Mechelen, Belgium, is a sprawling animal park spread across a vast 130-hectare domain. It houses over 1,000 different animal species from five continents, making it an exciting and educational destination for both locals and tourists. Visitors can marvel at diverse wildlife such as lions, giraffes, elephants, penguins, koalas and more.
One of the best zoos I have visited . The layout route is perfect to make sure you don't miss anything and don't have to double back on yourself at any point. The animals looked really happy and well cared for . I loved seeing the Koala and Red panda the most . The decorations for each area is wonderful too , so much effort has gone into how the zoo looks and it's wonderful

Visited the zoo on a Monday with my daughter. Well worth the trip. Although I was a bit shocked about the price of parking (you can park for free close by…) , the park itself felt reasonably priced and was well organized! Seems they are rebuilding and revamping in some places, but that wasn’t a problem as we got to see all the animals.
Duncan E — Google review
You can easily spend the whole day here. There is a lot to see, animals are separated by continents of origin, and most of them have decently sized living spaces. There are enough food and drink stops, toilets and playgrounds for children.
Marija M — Google review
We visited Planckendael on Saturday with family and a small child. There is plenty of parking on site. It costs €11 for one day and €32 for a yearly pass, which is a good deal! The animals are organized by continent, and we managed to visit three continents in one day. There are many play areas for kids, which is really nice. On the downside, the washrooms were not clean at all. We checked four different ones, and it seemed like no one was in charge of maintaining them, which is disappointing. The bird enclosures were quite small, with not enough space for them to fly. Other animals seemed to have better conditions, although of course a real jungle would always be more suitable. There are also several restaurants and places to grab a drink or ice cream. We chose the warm food self-service restaurant, which wasn’t very crowded, but the prices were high for self-service. The tables were not clean, and the service was quite slow. Honestly, if they lowered their prices, I believe they would have more clients. On the positive side, there is also a flying show at certain hours, which could be very interesting for some visitors. I also noticed a baby cabin with a microwave for parents who want to rest or warm up their baby’s food, which is a very nice detail. All in all, considering everything, I give Planckendael 4 stars out of 5. Thank you to the team, and I really hope to see some progress on my next visits.
Hanna — Google review
To maximize revenue and improve the visitor experience, it would be helpful to have more than one food court open in the park. The kids were quite hungry and only Asia’s food court was available. Otherwise, it’s a wonderful zoo. I’d happily visit every week if I lived nearby!
Pınar Ç — Google review
One of the best zoo's ive been to worldwide! A bit expensive but worths it. You need at least 4hours to finish it, so better come early
Moayad G — Google review
First off, we are zoo people (we have a membership at our home zoo and often go to zoos in places we visit), so do with that what you will. We have visited our fair share of zoos around the world and this particular zoo is without question the best one we have had the pleasure of visiting. It is also one of the more expensive ones, but the cost was well justified in my opinion. We spent over 5 hours in our first visit to this zoo and only made it through about 2/3 of the zoo itself. The layout of the zoo was simply incredible: the walks between exhibits were beautiful and each major exhibit had a variety of different vantage points (some being incredibly high and one being a tunnel you can crawl into for a from the ground view). Overall the animal exhibits were amazing and the activities and parks for kids were the best we have seen at a zoo. The one caveat was that the food was quite expensive so maybe pack some snacks or bring your own lunch. We will definitely be returning to Planckendael Zoo next time we are in the area - thanks for an amazing experience!
Scott O — Google review
A beautiful zoo where animals are kept in habitats that feel as natural as possible. There are also several great playgrounds that kids will love. The food is good, though a bit pricey—especially the drinks.

De Nekker - Provincial Sports and Recreation Centre is a fantastic destination for sports enthusiasts and families alike. With a variety of indoor and outdoor activities, it’s the perfect spot to enjoy a sunny day, especially with the inviting lake for swimming. The modern swimming pool, which opened in 2012, offers spacious facilities; however, some areas show signs of wear after several years. Families will appreciate the extensive playgrounds and attentive lifeguards ensuring safety while kids play.
Its a beautiful well maintained park/recreational area. The beach is perfect for kids and the park overall is clean. Lots of area within the park to explore with cafeteria and a friture as well! Totally recommended for families.

Highly recommend!!!! One of the best places for spent with family! Lots of play grounds, nice, clean, secure swimming place. Management and staff was polite and I found answers to all my questions!!! Big parking area, and empty spots was foundet without problems ( we arrived 2.5 hours after opening) Prices was less than I expected! In total: I was happy, children was happy, family was happy. NO ISSUES AT ALL!!!! Definitely will visit again and again...

I love this sports complex. This complex combines both serious sporting and family activity at the same place. There is a big well maintained swimming pool. I am big fan of their beach. The water in the lake in clean and they have active life guards.
Gofran C — Google review
Great and under rated place. Perfect place for families to spend the day. Off course the swimming beach is popular during warm and sunny summer days, but also for walking or the nice playgrounds this is worth a visit. I can also recommended swimming on colder days or in the evening. Further there are comfortable and modern buildings with accomodation like a restaurant, showers, meeting rooms, ...
Christophe L — Google review
We were hoping for better... We arrived around 9.30am and we were told that swimming is authorised only at 10am. The space to swim is very narrow, too narrow according to us. The really bad point is the lack of cleanliness on the beach, there are leftovers from the day before a bit everywhere. Though we were able to spend some nice time before the beach was overcrowded.
Adrien P — Google review
Wonderful nature, a decent restaurant that serves options for any member of the family. Beach, pool, nature, food, beer, etc. Everything that you can expect from a recreational park. One of the best places for a time to spend with family.
Galip B — Google review
Very nice place, perfect clean water, sand in the lake and on the beach, big shades from trees, no noisy dangerous people, fishes, playgrounds. Minuses: 16 euros for entrance for my family of 4, not cheap, but kids like the water; dirty changing cabins;
Kateryna M — Google review
The staff is absolutely rude and not helpful at all. When I reached there, the counter tickets were already over. I asked a security guard wearing spectacles and big rings in his ears, standing near the barricade how to get a ticket, and he said, “You can check online if you want; otherwise, go home.” To the management: Please instruct your staff to maintain at least a minimum level of respect towards the people visiting.

Saint Rumbold's Cathedral, a magnificent Gothic masterpiece from the 1200s, stands proudly in Mechelen's Grote Markt. This UNESCO World Heritage site is not only an architectural wonder but also a treasure trove of art, featuring stunning works by renowned artists like Peter Paul Rubens and van Dyck. The cathedral’s towering structure boasts an unfinished spire that invites adventurous visitors to climb its narrow staircase for breathtaking views of the city below.
Lovely architecture, we definitely recommend climbing the tower if you have the muscle for it (some 500+ steps total, almost 100m tall). It was 8 EUR/person when we visited (July 2024), the view is spectacular, and the history of the carillon is impressive. Try to be there (or close to the bell chamber) at every half hour or so (when there are songs played)
Mihaela D — Google review
Mechelen is often considered as the capital for Carillon, and St Rumbold's cathedral has two of them. Very beautiful cathedral and the skywalk at the top gives great view. As resident of Mechelen, you can get discount.
Avik C — Google review
A wonderful and inspiring cathedral in a lovely city, not far from Antwerp. There is parking underneath and tge train station is a walkable distance. The acoustic is great, try to visit for a service or concert. There is a tower to climb too with breathtaking views of the city.

An impressive cathedral with a bell tower you can go up -do get tickets in advance as it’s a time allocation only. Wonderful stained glass windows lining the cathedral walls. The bells in the tower are impressive and huge it’s good to go up on the hour to hear them chime.
Graham S — Google review
Wow, the view from the top is breathtaking! But the exhibitions on the way up and down are also excellent. Well worth the time and small cost to experience!
Ben K — Google review
Beautiful and well maintained Cathedral. Very huge cathedral. To visit the top , you need to purchase a ticket.
Shubham M — Google review
What a beautiful cathedral! Loved the baroque arches (similar to many others in other parts of belgium) and the amazing architecture and artistry that is exhibited in the edifice. The grandness and luxury of these cathedrals are totally astonishing. It is free to enter, but 8€ if u wish to climb the tower itself to the lookout. The climb is only available in the afternoons i believe.
Gloria L — Google review
Especially beautiful, definitely worth seeing. I will definitely come back and recommend other people to visit. Regarding the price, very reasonably, for people up to 27 years old the price was 3 euros. There is also an underground parking lot nearby, the price is affordable.

The Brusselpoort is a historic city gate in Mechelen, one of the few remaining from the medieval wall that once encircled the city. It holds great historical significance and offers visitors the opportunity to climb to the top for a stunning view. Adjacent to the gate is a museum where you can delve into its rich history.
"The Brusselpoort" is the only remaining medieval town gate of which Mechelen had several. Several centuries ago Mechelen was completely walled in and access only possible through one of the town gates. Even nowadays us locals still talk about extra-muros (when you lived outside of the town walls) or intra-muros when living within the safety of the walls. Definitely worth visiting / taking a look at when you visit Mechelen!
Pascale S — Google review
It was fun to walk around this site as well as walking through it. Standing under the wooden gate hung in the air, and using the reflection of the sunlight on my smartphone as a torch, I was able to see the detail of those walls hidden far above my head and in the darkness.
Traffic T — Google review
Used to be more useful, now everyone can just get around the whole thing since they tore down the wall. Now it is just a bit pointless and a huge risk to the city defenses when some duchy decides to lay siege again.
Arno D — Google review
It's a nice historical well maintained building, however you can't really go inside and it's also in the middle of an area with high traffic around it. Interesting to look at and spend five minutes to take a photo, but nothing more.
C C — Google review
I enjoyed exploring the site and wandering through it. It is an interesting building in the middle of the road. I enjoyed looking at it and spent five minutes taking photographs, but nothing more.
Erick H — Google review
In the middle of a multi-way crossing close to the canal, this is the imposing, surviving and restored gate of the old wall around Mechelen. You can climb the stairs up, I believe. You can also take pictures of it. That is about all, though. It's beautiful, but doesn't offer much more than it's history and a great sight.
Tobias C — Google review
This was a must see for this area, but it wasn't open for viewing or anything. It was still quite neat to snap some pictures of a historic gate. The gate is located in a rather hectic part of the city that is less friendly to pedestrians than the rest. The crosswalks are on very long timers here.
Emily F — Google review
As good as an airport can be, but as a smoker person I am very disappointed how smoking is treated after a check-in. I know I should not and it is in public interest to force back this habit, but if you do smoke you should get as much as you can before check-in, and than don't look for the smoking area - It's the worst I've ever seen.

The Speelgoedmuseum is a fascinating destination for families, offering 7000 square meters of toys, games, and pastimes to keep kids entertained. The museum provides an opportunity for adults to explore the history of toys and immerse themselves in nostalgia with displays featuring Meccano, Lego, toy soldiers, Airfix kits, and working train sets. Visitors can also enjoy interactive exhibits that showcase the cultural significance of toys.
An absolute jewel in Mechelen! I spent the whole of this morning with two little ones aged 3 and 4 years old playing and exploring this newly revamped museum. Relocated to directly under Mechelen Central Station, there is so much to do and play with for all ages. From LEGO, to dressing up, an interactive sensory room and the most incredible play room with a variety of play areas at the end, the Toy Museum is definitely to be highly recommended! We also rounded off the visit with coffee and cake in the museum cafe. We shall most certainly be visiting again.
Justina P — Google review
A bit disappointed- not so much fun stuff to do and mostly for smaller kids. Some nice cool toys on display. The games and interactive stations could have been better. The location is in the p cellar under the new train station.
Dag A — Google review
I highly recommend Speelgoedmuseum. Not only children can have fun here but also the adult. It’s just amazing to see what are grandparents use to play when they are young.
EM Z — Google review
We (two adults) visited the Malines toy museum in March 2025. The museum is an absolute sham, a disgrace to the word "museum". To say we were disappointed is a serious understatement. This "museum" cannot even remotely stand in the shadow of the Prague Toy Museum or the Museum of Childhood in London. There were six, seven rooms with some sort of displays. In the first room there were audio comments with longwinded Flemish stories that made us loose our will to live. Moving on through the other rooms we did see some interesting artefacts. The whole museum revolves around children, which in itself is good, but very little is done to attract the children's attention to the historic value of playing and/or toys and only the sketchiest of attempts were made to educate them. Basically the whole affair is no more than just a very noisy concrete shelled playground. We were dumbfounded when after a visit of just shy of 30 minutes we found ourselves back at the entrance. We even walked the circuit again to check if we hadn't missed an important part. But no, thirty minutes was all it took at the most leisurely of paces. And that for a fee of €35 (for 2). In short: if you are a serious museum visitor this is a place to avoid. If you want your children to play, there are many cheaper and better playgrounds.
Garratt F — Google review
Wonderful museum detailing the history of toys and their cultural significance. The museum is a great place to introduce kids to the breadth of toys in existence, with many interactive exhibits. Older visitors will have a good time reminiscing about the toys of their youth.
Roel F — Google review
Perfect day out with the family - interactive and informative exhibits, super easy to access by train from Mechelen station, friendly and helpful team. Worth a visit - we have been back a few times already!
Sugar D — Google review
They can be flexible with price if you get there like 2 hours before close otherwise it's over price. This is a good place to spend an hour but could be longer if you understand Flemish. The price however is quite expensive for one hour experience in a foreign language.

The kids loved it. Definitely worth the price. You can expect to spend 2-3 hrs there with kids ages 5-12.

If you're in Mechelen and craving a delicious pizza experience, look no further than Pizza Hut Delivery Mechelen. This well-loved chain is renowned for its mouthwatering pizzas, flavorful wings, and hearty pasta dishes, complemented by a variety of sides and desserts. My recent order from Pizza Hut Mechelen was nothing short of delightful! The service was exceptional; my food arrived promptly and piping hot—just as one hopes when ordering pizza.
I recently ordered from Pizza Hut Mechelen, and I was very impressed with both the service and the food! The delivery was fast and right on time, with everything arriving hot and fresh – exactly what you hope for when ordering pizza. The packaging was neat and secure, and the delivery driver was polite and professional. We ordered a BBQ, a Margherita, and a Cheesy bread on the side. Every item was delicious – the crust was perfectly baked, the toppings were generous, and the cheese was just the right amount of gooey. You can really taste the quality in each bite. It’s a great option when you’re craving comfort food at home, and their online ordering system is easy to use. Whether it’s for a chill night in or a small gathering with friends, I highly recommend Pizza Hut Mechelen for tasty, reliable pizza delivery.

Didn't taste like pizza hut pizzas at all. Tasted like our pizzas were lying out for a long time. We ordered 8 pizzas & everyone was disappointed. Don't know if they do this on purpose during the Saturday day deal, or if it's always like this

Absolutely horrible experience here. We showed up at 9.35pm and got in line to order. We waited for at least 10 minutes until the lady finally acknowledged us. Everyone had already ordered and they were giving out food. When I asked if she spoke English she said yes, then turned away and then told me that they're not taking any orders anymore. At this point it was 9.45pm. She could've told us while we were obviously waiting for them to taking our order and also it was open for another 15 minutes. Would she have taken our order if we spoke her language?

Zorba is a Greek restaurant located in Mechelen, offering delicious and authentic Greek cuisine. The restaurant is known for serving divine moussaka and mouthwatering grilled salmon. Guests may even be treated to impromptu performances by the friendly staff who occasionally play guitar in the cozy courtyard. The atmosphere is described as great, with stylish interiors and a pleasant outdoor terrace.
The food was great and the owner was kind to request for some english songs to be sung otherwise it’ll be all in Dutch. We came from somewhere far far away and we loved the hospitality. It was a warm atmosphere with music around.

Loved this place! This felt like a really authentic Greek experience and just like some of the restaurants we have visited in Zakynthos. I had the moussaka and also the feta from the oven - both delicious! Great range of beers too! The only downside was the atmosphere as it was a Tuesday evening. I’m sure it’s fantastic over the weekend!

The staff was really nice and the food was good. There was live music when we were there, and the atmosphere was cozy. I did find it a bit expensive for the size of portions, but the food was good. We had the giouvetsi and a mezze.

We had the table on the way and this affected my experience there. Maybe if the resto was full packed with crowd i would have appreciated the table but it was not so crowded. so why were we sited on the way?

Food is very fresh and delicious. Staff are also very friendly. It can get quite busy so don't forget to reserve up front. The mezze was really amazing. The vegetables that came with the fish were a little bit hard but otherwise everything was great.

Overall happy with the food, atmosphere, and service. I had grilled quail, which was nicely cooked and tasty. Dauphinoise potato was superb. Service is okay considering the busy crowd on the day, but nothing much to be said about. We tried walking-in for dinner once but they only had tables for those with reservations, which we did the second time. So, reservation is highly recommended.

Den Beer is a delightful dining spot nestled in the heart of Antwerp and Brussels, boasting an enviable location surrounded by stunning architecture. While it may be on the pricier side, the quality of meat and overall experience make it worthwhile. The restaurant features a charming interior and offers outdoor seating for those who wish to enjoy their meal al fresco when the weather permits. Guests have praised the attentive service, with staff members being friendly and professional throughout their visits.
Very positive experience. Actually we went there twice in two days. Service without any problems, the waiter doesn't Smile much but does his job perfectly. Really good food reasonably priced. Plus good Beer. Little too noisy but it is a pub after all.

Quick and professional service. Attentive waiter. Pleasant atmosphere. We had the restaurants take on Lasagne, which was a little unexpected because it was swimming in white sauce. For us it was too rich and heavy perhaps a smaller amount of the sauce would have suited the dish better.

LIEF is a breakfast, lunch, and coffee bar that offers healthy dishes made with pure and fresh ingredients. The menu includes options like sweet potato dip with feta crumble, an oriental quinoa salad with spiced cashews for extra flavor, and savory pancakes with artichoke spread. The cafe also serves refreshing ginger and lemon kombuchas along with quality cappuccinos.
Super nice staff! They went out of their way to make room for us! Portobello Burger, Mexican Salad and bread with fried egg were all good! Mexican salad could have used more spices… Lemonade was on the expensive side!

We stopped casually for some tea and even the tea was so special. Unlike the tea that you get with a teabag, this was the real deal, fresh and full of flavor.

Museum
Het Kunstuur Mechelen offers a unique and engaging way to experience art, making it accessible to everyone, regardless of their background in art history. Visitors have shared delightful experiences where they could hear personal stories from individuals connected to the artworks rather than traditional historians. This approach adds a layer of intimacy and relatability to the masterpieces on display. The presentations are well-structured, with each painting introduced thoughtfully, allowing guests to appreciate not just the visuals but also the narratives behind them.
We enjoyed the exhibition. It is well organised and interactive. In a nutshell this is a guided-only time-boxed art exhibition, also available in English. Stories are well told. We would only wish to have a tiny bit more time to explore the paintings from a close up.

Great place. Laid back atmosphere, wide set of food choices from various kitchens around the world. We went lal out from appetizers with cocktails over dinner (Vietnamese/ avocado bar / bubba /...) finishing off with ice-cream. All tasting great and fresh. Ideal for groups or large families.
Kestens T — Google review
I like the lively ambience and decor at Vleeshalle. There are good number of options that you can choose from. However, the food is quite overly expensive for the average quality. Some of the restaurants like SaBaBa have good quality and tasty food, Nice ice cream parlor has good variety too, others are below average to be honest!
Richa S — Google review
The worst food I had in my life is the bibimbap beef. It is not edible at all. You’re eating extremely salty soy sauce rice. Avoid at all costs.
Elena W — Google review
A place where I like to spend my time off. VERY cosy, nicely decorated, good food choices. You will be spending about 20-25 euros/person, so paybe not for a daily routine 😁 Enjoy the time! (if you don't like the 'cooking' smell, maybe avoid, your clothes will smell a bit afterwards 😉)

Always a good choice if you are with a large group since you don't require reservations. You can always find place here. You can also be sure that everyone will find something to their liking. Wide choices of cuisine and some of them are quite decent. It can be a bit pricey especially if you are getting multiple drinks with your meal but it's a price you pay for convenience.

They offer a wide selection of wines served by the glass and have various types of tapas to choose from. You can opt for different kinds of tapas or even go for a hot mix option.
I love good food, and this place had the best Tapas menu that I had in Belgium. I went twice in a week, and if you'd known me, you will take it as a solid stamp of approval! ;)
Sumin C — Google review
Good tapas restaurant in central Mechelen. The sharing board is absolutely perfect with so many options and the ham was just delicious! I liked the chicken and meatball dishes but the Patatas bravas and calamari were a little average despite the sauce. Good atmosphere overall and a nice team.
Philip J — Google review
quiet place. in the center of the square. welcoming and friendly service. I had fried calamari (obviously frozen and it says so on the menu). there must have been around 8 wheels of squid, perhaps they should have added a little more to the portion. but still they were good for a frozen product. they brought some bread and a garlic mayonnaise sauce. and I also had a beer. total cost 13 euros. economic 👌
Dario D — Google review
Drinks, service and atmosphere were great! Awesome place on the square in the sun. BUT, the fried tapas sharing plate was immensely disappointing. Calamari’s were rubbery, the fries were bland, the anchovies were tasteless… Just go for drinks and have a great time ;)

Stopped by unplanned. We had a drink and a small breakfast outside, which was cosy. Hot chocolate was looking very good but wasn't that great. Unfortunately you couldn't choose for milk chocolate, only dark and white was on the menu. Croissant was really good. The waiter didn't seem that happy to see customers and kept explaining how much work it would take to make everything which was kinda odd.

I was early and was greeted by a friendly maitre d’. Inquiring if they also had vegetarian options they said they would see with chef if they could foresee a vegetarian version of the menu. It’s best to let them know in advance if you wish a vegetarian option, because they only offer a four or five course menu, and both are entirely according to the chef’s inspiration. They did accommodate my request without an issue, and what a treat this was. The food was excellent, the cocktail (Sicilian Mule) and beer (Carolus Whiskey Infused beer) were great. The plating was done with a lot of care for details. It was a fabulous evening, also in part thanks to my dinner partner; but certainly also thanks to the very friendly hostesses. I’m certainly going back!

Reletavily new place in mechelen we had lunch. The outside still needs some work but the inside is very nice and stylish. The staff is friendly and very helpfull. They make a lot of publicy with sharing food but i think thats more an evening thing, wasnt very clear or obvious at lunch. The lunch carte for me was a bit little in terms of choice. A great experience for young and old alike. My almost 12 year old loved it. Our plan was to spend an hour or two but we spent the full day there. The only downside was the extortionate prices in the restaurant. If I was visiting again I would bring food with me. The staff were very engaging especially during the different experiences. We were very impressed with the trilingual abilities. Not easy to explain everything in 3 different languages. We appreciated the effort. We were in the area on holidays from Ireland. I booked the tickets well in advance and made a mistake with my dates. The staff were helpful and fixed it so that we could gain entry, we just had to pay the difference. I would definitely recommend Technopolis for a fun day out during the summer holidays.

I took a girl here of a first date and it was definitely worth it we had a good time and it sparked a few good conversations and kept things interesting. LOTS of kids running around and playing which is something to consider but we didn't mind and its good to see them learning. It is also very easy to access the place by public transport from the train which is a huge thumbs up. Only negative thing really was the staff at the front desk could have been a little more and welcoming as its kind of the first impression.

Vrijbroekpark is a beautiful and well-maintained provincial green domain in Mechelen. It’s perfect for a relaxing walk, not really for hiking – more of a leisurely stroll kind of place. The park is very dog-friendly, with plenty of open space and paths to enjoy with your four-legged friend. The gardens are absolutely stunning, especially in spring and summer when everything is in full bloom. A peaceful spot to unwind, enjoy nature, or have a quiet picnic. Not an adventure park, but definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area!
Mindaugas — Google review
Was able to have a bachelorette picnic here because of the available picnic tables. One of the park's features was its pond, with lively croaking frogs. This added a nice touch to our celebration. I was impressed by the park's upkeep. Despite its popularity, the grounds were spotless. People came for a run, to cycle, relax or even practice yoga here. You can fully get in your element here. I like it here.

Wide variety of products to buy in bulk, lovely staff, great location! You can find a list on their website. Unlike most zero waste shops, they have a vast choice of spices too! They also provide all sorts of pots in case you forget your own packaging, or if you just want bigger jars to bring home. Avoid the roasted, salted cashew nuts, they are far too tasty.

Great shop with fresh produce and not expensive. Very nice store and friendly owners. It is also possible to stop by without your own packaging. You can reuse their old packaging if you are in need :) They have veggies, cheese, bread, olives, spreads, veggieburgers, pastas, rice, nuts, seeds, dried fruits etc Enough to make a full meal or very rich breakfast.

Nice shop to enter. The good, cosy vibe of making aware choices and changing the world, combined with just heartwarming connection and very practical ecology. Take your time when you're there. Trash-free and hurry-free...

Shopping with a eco-conscious and plastic-free mind in the centre of Mechelen. Good offer on dry products such as nuts, seeds, beans, spices, ... also soaps and body-care products as well as fresh products such as veggies, cheeses, bread, cookies,... Just remember to pack some boxes and go see for yourself.

Trattoria Boretti is a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Mechelen, where you can indulge in authentic Italian cuisine. Despite its modest exterior, this charming restaurant boasts a spacious interior that welcomes diners with open arms. The menu features an array of delectable options, including pasta and risotto, catering to both meat lovers and vegetarians alike. For those planning group gatherings, Trattoria Boretti offers customizable menus with multiple courses to choose from.
Good Italian restaurant 😋 with a nice interior 👌🏻 i really like the starters. The main course is typical Italian food and it's enough. The menu is not overfilled. Also the dessert is so good, I replay enjoy the time there after work. Cozy , clean, and hygienic

Hands down one of the best tiramisus! Really enjoyed my visit. Very authentic Italian vibes. Lovely ragu and a dreamy dessert, topped off by a lovely waitress who was really welcoming and friendly. Would definitely return!

Excellent food and atmosphere, service was good but could have more people serving the tables. Price is very reasonable. I had my favorite plate (Carbonara) and it was perfect

Very good first impression as we went to try out this new restaurant. We enjoyed very much the food and the atmosphere. Many tempting pasta dishes in the menu too. Though quite busy, the service could keep up well without hassles.

We had a business dinner at this stunning place. Highly recommend- the food is delicious and the service excellent. We will come again 🫶
Irina P — Google review
Extremely disappointed. Despite booking a takeaway had to wait over an hour for our order, and our order was also incorrect. We received a pasta dish instead of the funghi risotto we ordered online on their own website. Due to the delay, I didn't want to argue the mistake. The pasta dish itself was not good, and a poor representation of authentic Italian cuisine
Rachid H — Google review
A nice spot in the city centre of Mechelen, ideal for a quick bite. The food was good, though not exceptional, and the service was somewhat chaotic. Additionally, the wine was quite expensive, making the overall price-to-quality ratio just okay.
Lucas S — Google review
Cozy place to go with friends, your partner. Long waiting at the front door... The red wine could be more complex (with casks) but the Primitivo is alright. The portions are rather small so price/quality it is not the best restaurant because you tend to eat more: starters, main, dessert etc. That makes a visit around 40-50 eur . Mocktails are 12 eur which is rediculous but fresh made, so the labour has to be payed extra. The coffee is really good, by Boretti!

Restaurant
Cosma Foodhouse, located in the Mechelen Befferstraat, is a unique establishment that seamlessly blends gastronomy with interior design and the sale of stylish interior objects and their own Cosma gin. The restaurant offers a diverse experience, featuring a deli with Mediterranean dishes and wines, as well as a brasserie with an inviting indoor garden. The menu reflects current culinary trends, offering options such as fancy finger food for sharing or a 350-gram Black Angus USA Prime entrecote.
Very personable service. Every single food that we ordered were fresh and delicious. Enjoyed every single one of them. Portion is actually pretty big too. If we ordered 3 course would not be able to finish it. 2 course is just enough. Fancy enough place for a date or special occasion but doesn't need to dressup. Smart casual is good.

Food was decent, had the steak which tasted pretty regular the spotlight was the sweet potatoe truffle fries they were delicious. Pretty pricey for 2 people with just entree and 2 drinks was $140 euro.

I’ve been meaning to try this restaurant for a while and it did not disappoint! The food was delicious and the staff were really friendly and welcoming. The theme is sharing but I was dining alone. The food was served quickly and the restaurant had nice vibe and good atmosphere.

Bloody brilliant! In the middle of the dinner I reserved a table for the next day as well as I was so happy with the food I was eating. (And I just love the responses from the management to reviewers that got their ego hurt ) . Salmon tataki - very good. Negroni - one of the best Negronis I have had. Halibut - well absolutely perfect. Hasta la vista - I’ll be back!

Brasserie
Restaurant
The brasserie Vrijbroekhof is a pleasant spot for a relaxed drink, snack, or casual meal. It is important to note that families frequent this establishment, so some noise from children can be expected. However, many find the atmosphere to be tranquil and calming due to the surrounding park greenery. The friendly staff and reasonably priced good food make it worth visiting again. The portions are generous and the outdoor seating area offers a nice view of the nearby playground for kids.
One has to select seating carefully if you don’t want to be a passive smoker

Friendly service, nice regular food and not expensive. It’s a down to earth place without frills. Chairs definitely need replacing and the toilets need a more regular clean.. people visiting the park use and abuse the toilets… Overall a good place to have a drink or something to eat when you are passing through.

As it can get quite busy here, best to go and order your drinks yourself at the bar... otherwise you may be facing a long wait, especially during Summer days etc. This place has a very unique, original 60's architecture! Been coming here ever since a kid during the 70s.

Like the place for playing but the food is too overpriced for what you get. Also there is always a queue to order and food takes a long time.

Nice place for a casual drink, snack or easy going meal. Take in mind that this place is visited frequently by parents and there children. So the noise of children's can be present, although I experienced it as a quiet and soothing place withe the park greenery around it. For day 4, if you don’t mind the extra trek, today covers more off the beaten path places like Mechelen Public Library Het Predikheren. Specialty Museums
Kazerne Dossin, a former military barracks in Mechelen, Belgium, stands as a poignant reminder of the atrocities committed during World War II. This historic site served as a transit camp where over 25,000 Jews and Roma were deported to concentration camps like Auschwitz-Birkenau. Today, it has been transformed into a moving museum and memorial dedicated to honoring the victims of Nazi persecution.
A very powerful and eye-opening experience. It offers deep insight into history, and I highly recommend this place.
Hugo R — Google review
Chilling. There are 2 buildings : the actual old Dossin barracks, of which a very small part was turned into a memorial, free entrance. Crazy they turned most of this into residences. Across the street is the new museum on 4 or 5 levels, very well done, a thorough visit of both, count 3hrs easily. Pretty much everything there is commented in both Dutch, French and English.
Peter C — Google review
A highly emotional and poignant experience in the serene and respectful surroundings of a monument to those persecuted by the Nazi occupation and certain collaborators. A heart of stone would be required to keep from tearing up while you walk the corridors of photos , audio visual commentary , statistics , personal effects , artefacts , horrid stories of torture and the tearing apart of lives and families - men , women , and children . The enormous photo walls of the faces of the 28800+ deportees from Kazerne Dossin of the "Give them a Face" initiative pay tribute to the persecuted and put faces to the numbers. Personalising what the criminal oppressors did everything in their power to de-personalise . In these days of populist, nationalist, xenophobic, repressive , prejudice, and anti immigrant sentiment a visit to museums and sites such as this should be required for all children and adults . It bears witness to the effect of creeping and unopposed discrimination , repression , and racism . Humans are all equal . The events that this shrine was built to immortalise should not fall from our memory now or from the memory of any future generation . We must never forget . #peace (Footnote: Maybe a missed opportunity to give a name and a face and honour to those who saved so many children from being transported - the nuns next door in the convent and Bruno Ceupens for example - who are righteous amongst nations )
Graham D — Google review
It is of course an extremely sad place where horrible crimes against humans were committed but it is a wonderful memorial and museum and an amazing project causes awareness that many many victims were even only small children 😢 💔
IVONNE K — Google review
Interesting museum. Not very interactive, but do visit if you want to read more about the history.
Audrey L — Google review
I went to this place thinking that I would see the rooms of the camp however it is just a museum that shows you the timeline of the war. How Hitler and his party came to power, you literally witness the war, how Jewish people and Gypsies were targeted and slowly excluded from society. Moreover, museum exhibits artwork and belongings of some Jewish people (camp uniforms, silverware and armband etc.). The museum has 4 floors and if you read everything and watch every video it will take you more than 2 hours to finish.
Aras A — Google review
In the bartacks is a small exhibition, the real one is at the other side of the road. This is an intresting and very nice exhibition With videos from people who lived during the war. You should take a few hours to do the tour. It has 4floors, the upper is a fantastic vieuw over Mechelen.

Historic Walking Areas
The Great Beguinage in Mechelen is a collection of medieval houses, church buildings, and green spaces that once served as the residence for spiritual women. Founded during the Crusades, these communities were established to provide shelter for women and children whose family members did not return from battle. Instead of joining convents, these women formed their own unique communities within the city. The Great Beguinage offers a glimpse into Mechelen's beautiful Beguines with its typical Flemish character and distinctive architecture.
This church is worth a visit and there is no fee. Beautiful paintings, stain glass, and other art.

I'm biased since i was borne and raised here, so I'm counter balancing my score. Stunning alleys and beautiful houses all for you to explore. Perfectly safe as well. A part of the city where you can just feel the history. Beguines were found in most major old cities in Belgium and Mechelen has a significant and beautiful quarter as well. If you travel to ancient Italy, islands in Greece or love to explore Valencia, you will find the same cozy vibe here.

Public library
Mechelen Public Library Het Predikheren is a beautifully restored building that was once a cloister, shelter home, and military barracks. After years of neglect, it has been transformed into a modern library while preserving its original architecture. The small café offers quality products and a cozy atmosphere for visitors to relax. The new kids/youth section is well-designed, and the library also provides nice views of the surroundings. It's definitely worth a visit for both book lovers and those who appreciate historical architecture.
A lot of English books, you can see their catalog online. Good selection of mangas, comics and graphic novels. Staff very friendly and they will speak you very slowly if your Nederlands is not good.

Saint John's Church, located in Mechelen, is a centuries-old marvel that has been beautifully restored on the inside. Visitors are greeted by enthusiastic volunteers who share stories and explanations about the church's sights. The baroque interior is adorned with charming details and features Rubens' triptych, stunning wood carvings, statues, and paintings. Additionally, visitors can explore the murals behind the organ with a guide or through a television screen.
For some months you can see both the main painting of rubens in the center and the two parts of the triptychon. Then these ones, the side parts, offer their place to the paintings of the back side of the triptychon. It was great to see the work inside the church where it belonged and not in a museum.
Konstantina T — Google review
One of its main features are the Rubens paintings. The organ was playing while we were there so added to the atmosphere. I was impressed with the detail of the confessionals. The vestibule areas are full of paintings.
Graham S — Google review
With its imposing tower and handsome high-pointed windows, St-Janskerk is a fine illustration of the Gothic style, mostly dating from the fifteenth century. Inside, almost everything is on the grand scale, from the massive pulpit and the whopping organ through to two large and unusual canons pews.

Worth a detour to see Rubens’ work.

As the second largest church in Mechelen it served the wealthy patrician and guild communities of the city. It's construction follows that of St. Rumbolds very closely and represents a typical church in the Brabantine Gothic.

Tinèlle is a restaurant located in the left wing of Het Predikheren, a former monastery and military hospital from the 17th century that has been transformed into a cultural hotspot. This year, Tinèlle brought back a Michelin star to Mechelen after ten years. Chef Ken Verschuren aims to create a place where delicious food and accessibility are central, without any stiffness. The restaurant promises its customers a surprising food experience in a beautiful historical setting.
It was absolutely worth it! We had the three-course lunch, and every bite was delicious! Lunch menu changes monthly. It's a lovely restaurant with attentive and excellent service. Even the chef said HI to us :) No wonder they have a 🌟, the plating was also very pretty. We highly recommend this place!

It’s good. It’s great. Nice atmosphere. Nice short menu. Good food. The hamachi -starter - was brilliant. The main - fish with white asparagus and grey shrimps - a bit blend. But a nice restaurant with ok prices .

Tinelle (named after pianist Tinel) Is a michelin star restaurant in a tastefully renovated predikheren church. Nice ambiant restaurant with high walls, carefully accentuating some old elements from the former church. French cuisine dominates the menu with a very limited vegetarian menu. Copious portions make sure you won’t go home hungry, perhaps even a tad too much. Flavours are balanced, tending towards a savoury dominance, but on the whole good food! Service is decent, wine menu acceptable for Michelin standards, and there are even some wines by the glass. Perhaps a little room for imrpovement here, but very affordable! Pricing in line with quality and portions.
Koen D — Google review
Refined and tasty. Thought it was aiming for a star, but already has one. Been here on two occasions and I like it a lot but do not love it. Tomato carpaccio with goat cheese and then a very tasty and detailed pasta with crab (wished it had some more crab) and a fresh citrus based dessert. Nice building. Service is on the slow side
Hannes L — Google review
This high level restaurant isn't cheap. But this is related to the top quality of the products they use. The food is delicious. The portions are big enough. Modern interior in a historic building. Brewery Het Anker

Brewery
Distillery
Het Anker is a brewery and single malt distillery that dates back to the 15th century in Mechelen. Visitors can not only enjoy beer-infused dishes and drinks at the bar but also take daily tours of the brewery led by Mr. Luc, who passionately explains all procedures involved with brewing. The tour includes tasting beers made with various malts and herbs used in their production.
We recently stayed at Brewery Het Anker and loved our visit. Situated in an interesting corner of a lovely, medieval city, the brewery is well-situated for a walking tour. Rooms are clean, comfortable, well-appointed and very quiet. We had dinner at the brewery, which was delicious. Service was great even though they were extremely busy. Breakfast the next morning was very varied, with muesli, waffles, breads, ham, cheese and fresh fruits among others on offer. Highly recommend!
Gretchen M — Google review
Cool brewery. It was great to learn so much about the brewing process and the history during the tour. We also got to know about the whiskey and tried it. At the end we had great beer. And after I have bought drinks for all the man in my family cause they really love those products. Also the tour guide was very friendly and funny, and was answering all the questions we had. Great experience.
Daryna H — Google review
I recently visited the Brewery for a tour and tasting. It was very fun, I loved listening to the history of the brewery and learning about how beer is made. Our guide was great, the whiskey was a bit too much for my taste, but the beer and creamy liquor were amazing! The gift is also much appreciated!
Martina J — Google review
During our holidays in Bruges, we drove 1 hour to visit the brewery, following a warm recommendation from friends who had visited it in the past. We arrived with great appetite, but what awaited us there turned out to be one of the most unpleasant surprises we’ve ever had. As soon as we sat down, the waiter informed us that there is a rule stating that we can order a maximum of 4 items from the menu!!! And this regardless of how many people we are!! So, a group of 7 people would be limited to only 4 dishes. The explanation we were given is laughable – supposedly, because of the crowd, it is more convenient for the kitchen to serve up to 4 items per group!! Sorry, but there are much larger restaurants that can easily serve all groups without such rules. It should also be noted that this rule was not written anywhere, neither on the restaurant’s website nor was it mentioned when we made the reservation. We have visited dozens of restaurants both in our country and abroad, and honestly, this is the first time we have ever encountered such a situation. We are aware of restaurants with a minimum consumption requirement, but a maximum consumption? That’s a first!!! As a result, our mood was ruined, we ordered a few dishes but of course remained hungry, and eventually ended up at the McDonald’s across from the brewery to actually fill up!! Therefore, 1 star as a lenient rating (I wish there was an option for 0), and a piece of advice to future visitors: only go to the brewery if your group has a maximum of 4 people – otherwise you will leave hungry.
Vangelis G — Google review
The hotel is hands down favorite in Mecklen basically part of the brewery the rooms are beautiful. The restaurant is excellent it comes with breakfast but I recommend reserving for the evening meal if you stay here better than most places around. The brewery tour is well worth it booking too.

We visited the brewery in 2017 and retuned again in 2025 staying at the hotel. What a superb experience, the hotel bed is super comfortable, spacious room. The restaurant serves delicious food, for both: dinner and breakfast. Service is brilliant, friendly and fast. Would definitely stay here again.
Driele H — Google review
The Gouden Carolus Ambrio beer is really good. Smooth, rich, and the kind of sip that makes you lean back and appreciate the moment. It set the bar high, and luckily, the food kept up. The burger was solid: juicy, well-seasoned, and paired with beer-battered potato wedges that felt like a clever little nod to the brewery's roots. Nothing revolutionary, but everything was tasty and satisfying. Service was friendly and attentive without being overbearing, and the space itself has that cozy brewery charm. Wood, warmth, and just enough buzz to feel lively. It's the kind of place where you can settle in, enjoy a good meal, and linger over another round.

If you're on the hunt for a delightful vegan dining experience in Mechelen, look no further than The Chick. This charming eatery offers a vibrant menu filled with plant-based options that cater to both vegans and vegetarians alike. Nestled in the heart of this picturesque Belgian city, The Chick is celebrated for its commitment to healthy eating and sustainability. With an inviting atmosphere and a focus on fresh ingredients, it’s the perfect spot to indulge in delicious meals while exploring local flavors.
We went on a Wednesday. it was a day where the younger chefs strut their stuff so we couldn't choose the menu items. But despite them being young, all the food were amazing. We took the 5 course + 1 extra special course + non alcoholic drinks pairing. The host was amazing. Knowledgeable and friendly. As was the rest of the wait staff. You feel really welcome there. The non alcohol paring was interesting as it is not often we see that. Every single drink was delicious. Will definitely return. Just to nitpick: if the bread could have been slightly warm, would be even more fantastic.

For the price we paid the food could be better. The wines were very good but the pairing could be better. The experience is there but just not exploding. It is a nice place, we had a great evening. Beautiful inside.

10/10 experience. Very cosy atmosphere with the open fire. Very friendly staff that took the time to have a chat with us and welcome us in our new city (we just moved to Mechelen). Absolutely amazing food, perfect balance of flavours, a good mix of strong traditional products with notes of fusion. 3h meal - 5 services - 89€

Well. This was great. So much innovation taking place in the kitchen. Young talented chef who dares to go beyond traditional kitchen. I do have to return to the best restaurant in Mechelen

We went there for NYE 2021. The very friendly host welcomed us personally. The place looks beautiful, a mix of old and new, very cosy. The bites and food were excellent with some old time favourites and original surprises mixed in. The staff was all very enthusiastic and extremely friendly and welcoming. One of our friends is allergic for several things, and she received a different though very similar dish for all courses. We will definitely visit again!

Fast food restaurant
McDonald's is a beloved fast-food institution that has stood the test of time, famous for its iconic burgers and crispy fries. This particular location boasts ample space, ensuring that even during busy hours, you won't be left waiting too long. Families will appreciate the two-level playground designed to keep kids entertained while parents enjoy their meals. Although cleanliness could use some improvement—particularly on the floors—the overall experience remains enjoyable.
Great experience, super nice employees as well!! 😍😍 Love this place!! Right place for healthy eaters 🥬!!

Huge McDonald’s while still maintaining decent waiting times. You can order at the counter or via the screen. The playground is 2 levels so kids will definitely be entertained. The only downside is that cleaning is not done thoroughly enough resulting in a dirty floor. A lot of parking space nearby and an underground drivethrough.

We got take away and didn’t get our sauce while we got home. We thought “yea, it can happen once”. Today we got 2 large mcmenu’s and we didn’t get any fries!! teach your workers to pay attention to orders, please!
Nika S — Google review
Take away disaster. Cold and hot food packed together in one bag, so the food was cold before we finished the 5 minute drive. Further, we were missing an order of fries and the apple juice that came with a happy meal. Really terrible experience, including being unable to finish a complaint via the receipt
Hilary H — Google review
Good service, food delivered to table. Has own underground car park which is hard to locate with Google maps. Order screens also confusing as no English translation. You need to take a wooden number for table and enter number on screen before payment.

Open for business, In house dining is once again a possibility. And as usual a speedy service. Like eating a hot launch. Today on the menu a big Mac and medium Fanta. Even within this crisis they found a solution to keep the drive-through going. Welldone guys

Museum Hof van Busleyden is a 15th-century palace in Mechelen, showcasing paintings and artifacts from the Flemish Golden Age. The 'Hidden Gems' exhibition displayed over 100 works of art, including masterpieces by renowned artists such as Rubens and Jordaens. The museum also features a new exhibit focusing on regional court culture from the 15th to 17th century.
This museum is a gem. Smiling staff first : it is important. Then, the whole museum is super clear, well organized, not crowded, very warm. You feel very comfortable, there are sofas in almost each room if you want to take your time. There is also audio guide combined with the text on the walls. I did a lot of museums all around the world, and this is one of the best in term of combination between modern technology and classic stuff. Also free if you have the belgium museum pass. Go for it !!
Léopold B — Google review
This beautifully restored Renaissance palace has really interesting exhibits about Burgundian court life and humanism. The mix of old artifacts and modern presentation works really well. A hidden gem in Mechelen — definitely worth a visit!

Beautiful old building with a very nice garden and exhibition. Definitely with a visit when in Mechelen.
Lisa B — Google review
The garden is well worth a visit with the back drop of the main building with its details and arches.
Graham S — Google review
Great renovated museum with beautiful gardens, and a cute coffee shop.
Beat S — Google review
The museum is currently (Easter 2023) under reconstruction and thus only a selection of its treasures can be visited in the undergrounds exposition hall (which is not reflected in the full income price). This selection seems deceptively smaller than it is (more than 100 items), most of which date from pre 1900s, including some paintings from Rubens, Jacob Jordaens and Pieter Coecke van Aelst. They offer a nice overview of the cultural history of Mechelen. There is an informative audio guide in English, Dutch and French, though some of it is rather anachronistic. They also have a special children's activity pack in Dutch. Upon completion children also can get a free post card which can be posted to any address in Belgium for free in the museum.
G J — Google review
Tremendously good exhibition on 700 years art in Mechelen. Perfect free audio guide, and just the good timing (1h30) . Was 5 stars. The new exhibition on the Golden Fleece is nice but very very small. The permanent collections, open again, have beautiful master pieces, but also here only a few.

Municipal Theater Mechelen is a beautiful and historic theater located in the heart of the city. The building itself is wonderful, and the cozy theater hall provides a lovely experience for various events, including graduation ceremonies and shows. While some visitors found the seating to be somewhat uncomfortable during longer performances, many still recommend it as a clean and pleasant place to visit. With a wide variety of shows on offer, it's definitely worth checking out when in Mechelen.

Saint Catherine is an exquisite and charming catholic church, often overlooked due to the prominence of the Saint Romboutscathedral. Despite its limited footfall, this hidden gem deserves a visit when passing by. The allure lies in its beauty and tranquility, attracting few visitors who are fortunate enough to stumble upon it. Perhaps take a mere ten minutes out of your day to explore this stunning place of worship – you won't regret it.

Saint Rumbold's Tower

4.6
(158)
Saint Rumbold's Tower in Mechelen offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the city after climbing its 514 steps. Despite being unfinished, the tower is an iconic landmark visible from all over the city. Visitors can take breaks on different levels while ascending and learn about the history of this 97-meter-high tower. At the top, a magnificent view of Mechelen awaits, and on clear days, even Brussels and Antwerp are visible.
It is in a small and nice town. Pretty high, it has 580 stairs. So it takes time and effort to go up. But on the way, you can make stops and enjoy the construction of the bell ringing system. You can touch the bells even. Also, you can see how the big clock is looking from inside 😍 from the top an amazing view over "half of Belgium."... joking ☺️ but you have a view at Brussels and Antwerp 👌
Mariia B — Google review
Very interesting tour, great to know the nick name of Mechelen people and the story. The AR equipment is temporary out of use in the ash room ,and one of the virtual telescope to south side is also down.
Hao Y — Google review
Tower itself is taller than Belfort in Brugge, and you shouln't waste time in queue to get inside, also it's very beautiful and has a carillon. The price is only 8€. But views from the observation deck are restricted and you can't take a look straight down
Pawel Z — Google review
Climbing the 538 steps reveals original 15th-century construction marks on the interior bricks. The carillon mechanism plays every 15 minutes - the 49 bells were cast using a 1660s alloy formula. The panoramic view shows why this was Flanders' most important watchtower.
Arman K — Google review
Take the time to go up the 500+ steps. It's a wonderful trip down history. There are details on every floor to read and take the booklet when you first arrive for more fun history details. And win-win: the way up is different than the way down, so you won't trip on people going in the other direction. The view on the top is superb!
Patricia M — Google review
You have to pay to go up the 97.5 meter high tower, but visiting the cathedral itself is free and there is much to see believe me.
Marc W — Google review
This attraction is overrated. Tower is too high to see anything beautiful. Red roofs, forests. Completely flat and boring landscape. Floor at the top of the tower is made of glass. You need to be really attentive in the wet weather not to fall down on the slippery glass. Ah! That black drop far-far away is Atomium in Brussels! Wow, really? What a surprise. Belgians try to sell their "gems" to tourists and invent lots of surprising stories about their quite average monuments.
Dasha P — Google review
It is a beautiful monument with incredible stained glass and an impressive pulpit. Several steps lead up to the monument. However, it is worth seeing all the bells and enjoying the view from the top.

I visited with my grandmother. Great coffee (and she's not into all that frilly coffee nonsense). I had a beer (Bloemekei IPA) which was nice and bitter too. The apple cake was nice, airy and tasty. Overall a lovely experience. Not five stars because it's a little bit too dark for my taste (but that's my personal feeling).
Igor H — Google review
Cosy interior. But that's all for that place. The tea was in a dirty cup ("apple tea" was just a sugary powder which is kind of disappointing for that price). Service is unfriendly. Cappuccino wasn't hot enough and too small portions. The prices are above average.

It offers a variety of delicious vegetarian and vegan dishes, making it a great spot for those looking for plant-based options. The restaurant has received recognition, including winning the Belgian Vegan Awards. With its attentive staff and good food, Kato Gateaux provides a pleasant dining experience for visitors exploring Mechelen's culinary scene.
I see that some reviews are about how slow they were. It was full inside and a few tables sitting outside, still they managed to serve us in time. The food was good! We would come back again.
Pankaj S — Google review
Cute place! Friendly staff, tasty breakfast, good coffee. On a relatively quiet street.
Vivian G — Google review
The food wasn’t bad, and the service was fine. However, I found it quite pricey for what it was. I ordered a bagel with pesto and avocado, and my partner had some toast with pesto, caramelised onions and a cashew sauce. While their dish was more flavourful, mine was rather bland. What I enjoyed the most was the side salad and the Earl Grey and hibiscus tea – both were full of flavour. Overall, it wasn’t a bad experience, but given the price, I expected a lot more in terms of taste and quality.
Liza D — Google review
Friendly service. Yummy vegan food. Chai Pea latte was really delicious. Nice place to sit with lots of light. Update: they have changed their menu. Happy to see that. The croque was really good. The bagel could be better if it is slightly toasted too. But all is delicious.

This place was on my bucket list for a long time. I finally visited and ordered french toast, acai bowl and chai latte. Unfortunately, the place doesn’t have anything special from other places. The prices and very high comparing to the portions of food that you get.

When we saw on social media that Kato Gateaux was going vegan we thought, great, we need to go and test it out. Today we made the trip to Mechelen. We ordered 3 different meals we ate in the shop and got 3 desserts to go. - € 13 Cauliflowercouscous - € 12.5 Sweet potatoes waffles - € 11 Bowl of "egg salad' The presentation of the plates was ok. The taste and quantity not so: - The cauliflowercouscous with sweet potato, apple, chickpeas, mint, ciboulette, pumpkin seeds, almond shavings was ok but grossly overpriced and not inspiring at all, we can serve you this at home any day of the week. - The € bowl of "egg salad' was half a bowl of spinach leaves, some roasted sweet potatoes, tomatoes, the 'eggsalad' and 2 half pieces of bread. Again grossly overpriced and not at all what we expected to find. The best thing on the plate, the sweet potato, that seems to be the major theme in this place. - The Sweet potatoes waffles with avocado cashewcreme, chili flakes, pomegranate seeds and cilantro. This was the biggest disappointment of them all, not the freshly baked waffles you would expect, but stone hard bricks with 8 pieces of non ripe avocado on it and some cashewcreme in the middle with yes a beautiful flower on top and some pomegranate seeds and chili flakes. When trying to cut some waffle a lot of brute force was needed and some pieces ended on the floor. This plate costs you € 12.5, and leaves you with a bad taste due to the poor amount and even worse quality. This is so not what we where looking for when going out for a vegan lunch. We told ourselves it's "Kato Gateaux" so maybe we did the wrong thing ordering a meal, thus we decided to choose 3 pieces of cake to take home and taste. Our choice - € 4.5 lemon cake - € 5.5 carrotcake - € 6.5 speculoos cheesecake topped with a raspberry coulis -The lemon cake was nicely topped with sugary edible flowers and a crunchy sugary topping. But other than being beautiful it could not tantalize our taste buds and left us with a strange doughy taste in the mouth. - The carrot cake topping was the worse I ever ate, it was as if licking sugary butter , the cake itself was uninspiring the nutty parts where the best. - the cheesecake with the raspberry coulis, as big cheesecake lovers we looked forward to this one... but here too we unfortunately ended up disappointed. The coulis was nice and the best part of the cake! The cheesecake part had a strange granulated consistency that left a bad taste in the mouth, and the speculoos bottom was just revolting. This was overall such a big disappointment, I usually try to find as many positive points even if a meal doesn't measure up to our expectations. But this time even that is difficult. We loved the little flower table pieces and the flowery plates. But when going out to lunch we would like the food to be up to our expectations more than the decor.
Kat D — Google review
Highly recommended. Amazing new restaurant serving delicious healthy dishes. They've got a lot of vegan dishes and it's really good. Friendly staff and very nice interiors.

Whether you’re vegan or not, this place is worth the detour. The cakes are astounding and if you didn’t know any better you’d swear you could taste the butter. Restaurant
At Ember, they strive to minimize their use of electricity and gas by embracing a back-to-basics approach. The restaurant aims to showcase the subtle primal power of smoking and grilling on a wood fire. Even during rainy days like in Feb23, they stay true to their concept by keeping the heating off inside. Chef Zino Jacobs elevates dishes from the grill, not limited to meats but also including fish and vegetables.
Celebrate our anniversary there and it was perfect! It's super intimate and the food was delicious and beautifully presented. There is only one menu, perfect for people who like to be surprised and don't like to have to choose! They also have a great concept for adapted drinks where you can swap wine for non alcohol at any time during dinner. They make their own alcohol free drinks. They really put a lot of effort into everything. You can see they're really passionate and the staff is very friendly.

Truly exquisite. The service, the food, the atmosphere. It is a wonderful experience. We were three and all had the tasting menu (two regular and one veggie variant). All local produce, smoked on fire 🔥 including their de.li.cious bread. And the mushroom ragout, my goodness, best mushroom dish ever. Every “taster” comes with a matching alcoholic or nonalcoholic drink; also all very tasty. And the service is friendly and polite, without being pedantic. We’re going back for sure!

Both kitchen an waiting staff are delivering top-level quality at Ember. It’s without a doubt the best restaurant of Mechelen. It’s modern cuisine with a focus on top quality local products is delicious. The cuisson was in all three of my visits perfect of every peace of meat and fish we got. You feel that Chef Zino Jacobs has an unique view on cooking which makes his restaurant stand out. Grilling/smoking and using their own herb garden are examples of how they bring their own DNA in their dishes. I tried both the non-aloholic and alcoholic drinks pairing, this is of an unseen level. Maitre and Sommelier Michel van der Wielen puts a lot of effort to put complexity in every pairing he makes for the monthly changing menus. Apart from that the drinks menu lists many gems in both wines and beers. To put on top on your list if you like finedining, because one thing is sure, you’ll definitely have a a magnificent gourmet food lunch or diner!

Absolutely fantastic food, wine and mocktails. Everything exceeded our expectations. The sommelier (Michel) is so passionate and clearly knows exactly what he is doing and talking about. I’ve never had such excellent cocktails/mocktails in my life! Absolutely sublime. My husband and I are big food fanatics and have had our fair share of excellent meals and our dinner at Ember tops them all. Every dish was impeccable. Zino is an extremely talented chef. What a hidden gem in Mechelen. I would give 6 stars if it were possible!

Amazing experience in food, in atmosphere and in service. Incredible dishes and unbelievable ingredients combinations. Very friendly staff, you feel they really care to make ppl happy. All the details that creat fullness like a good wine rich in smell, flavour and aftertaste. About wine btw, you’ll have a lot to try and enjoy, it was another one experience. When you go there be ready for something you’ve never went through before. My recommendation 100%. And a special THANKS for the owner, for his intention to do and create the best from the best from the heart and with the soul 🫶 I can write more and more, but you better see it, feel it, smell it, taste it...

Zino is a fantastic chef and the grill restaurant is in a magic place. From the moment you enter, until you ask for the bill their focus is on you as a client. Brunch restaurant
Foom is a popular spot in Mechelen that offers a variety of dining options, making it perfect for breakfast, lunch, or a delightful pastry break. The trendy setting beneath the Sint-Romboutstoren provides an ideal backdrop for enjoying their signature American pancakes with unique toppings like banana, salted caramel, and speculoos crunch.
We had an amazing experience at Foom! We ordered the pancakes and sweet potato hashbrowns, and both dishes exceeded our expectations. Normally, we’re not big fans of caramel on pancakes, but this combination was absolutely delicious—it completely changed our minds! The same goes for the sweet potato; the flavors were so well-balanced and expertly crafted that we discovered a whole new appreciation for it. You can truly taste the culinary talent and creativity in every bite. Thank you for such a wonderful meal—we’ll definitely be back!

Nice quiet breakfast place. We went pretty early on a Sunday and only shared the place with two other couples. The oat pancakes with banana and caramel were veryyyy good, but you don’t get them if you don’t have a huge sweet tooth, cause these were very sugary 😋. I love that it’s located on the side of the city centre, so it’s easily to get to and quite calm.

Everything was tasteful and well presented. Special mention for the coffee with white chocolat, spéculos etc wonderful. Very fast service.

At first I wanted to give a 4* review because of the long wait, but then one of the waiters told us spontaneously that they're really sorry for the long wait because they were understaffed unexpectedly, which is expert level communication to me, so cuddos to you for that! Secondly, the food is as delicious as it looks. It's sooooo good. We indulged in the fluffy and sweet American pancakes If you want a feel good moment with your friends, please visit these people. They'll take good care of you, feed you well, entertain you with their good service and they do it in a very trendy and cute interior. Thanks so much! PS: there's an upstairs if you like it a bit more quiet :p

Slow service, very hard chairs. Coffee is really not drinkable. Hot luxury chocolate milk much too sweet with mediocre chocolate. Far too sweet dishes. I ordered American pancake and not SOUP with meatballs! (See photo) A real student room at the church tower... I was influenced by the positive reviews. Mediocre choice.

Very good breakfast! Went early on a Sunday morning before the crowds. We had coffee, granola and pancakes! Everything was tasty and not very sweet, which we liked. The coffee was also good. Service was nice and quick!

Great brunch place, I’ve been going for years almost weekly. It’s one of the places in Mechelen with the best price quality. The food is delicious, the portions are relatively big and the staff is always friendly. Foom is a really a winner in the city, makes sense as to why on the weekends there is normally a line to enter 😉

We were here for lunch and we were very disappointed. We both had the grilled chicken toast. According to the info this was supposed to be with arugula and parmesan. Since the name refers to chicken, I expected there to be more than 1 little slice of chicken. As you can see from the picture, this is a very expensive meal for 15€ as a number of ingredients are missing. I normally always encourage local places but I was very disappointed in this place!

Belgian restaurant
Carbon Bar & Kitchen in Mechelen offers a cozy and intimate atmosphere, perfect for catching up with friends while enjoying delicious street food from around the world. The menu features a variety of small dishes meant for sharing, allowing guests to sample different flavors and cuisines. The bao bun with slow-cooked pork belly comes highly recommended, and the cocktails are also noteworthy. The restaurant's concept of sharing small plates works well for groups, although at times the owners may seem a bit overwhelmed.
It's one of our favourite spots in Mechelen. it is a sharing concept with a mix of different countries' kitchen and the total staff it is composed by only 2 girls, who are preparing and serving the food almost exclusively for you and few other tables, so be patient and enjoy the cozy and relaxing atmosphere 😊

My only regret is not coming here sooner after so many years in Mechelen! Absolutely amazing food, very warm hosts, and a cozy decor. Definitely visiting again! ❤️

We had 4 dishes for 2 people (more than enough, portions are very well served). Our favorites were: i) sweet potatoes (never had fries with such a level of “crunchiness”. ii) beef tacos (the seasoning was amazing and the mix between leafs and the meat was unbelievable. Definitely 5 stars for this place. Well priced.

Service is way too slow. I am patient, but this has been painfully too slow, considering that most of the food must have been pre-prepped. I also think it's way too expensive for what you eat. A spring roll for over 6 euros that is made of 5% chicken and 95% of salad and carrot is too much

Very friendly service. Nice environment. Liked how the food is fusion nicely.

We couldn't get enough, and every dish we tried was just as good as the previous one. The staff were all smiles and very helpful.

Decor is good, service good. Some street food items like bao and wasabi chicken were good. Some were just okay. We had beef tacos which were under seasoned.sweet potato fries weren’t crispy enough. We had Choco lava cake and ice creams in dessert and both were outstanding. I think we expected a lot considering All review are great. It’s not bad but I think some dishes definitely need work. Price point is good. We spent 70 on a dinner for 2 with cocktails, 5 dishes & 2 desserts.

AMAZING food, super nice personel. Absolutely worth a visit, especially for the veggie options! Very much recommend the sweet potato fries, steamed bao buns and the burrata with lavender oil. <3
