If you only have 1 day to spend in Trani, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Trani is a picturesque Adriatic port town known for its stunning Romanesque cathedral dramatically set right on the waterfront. Its historic center features a maze of stone streets, a medieval fort, and a lively harbor lined with cafes and seafood restaurants. Visitors can explore well-preserved Jewish heritage sites, including two former synagogues, and stroll along the seafront promenade at sunset. Trani also serves as a good base for visiting nearby Puglia attractions and coastal towns.
With favorites like Basilica Cattedrale Maria Santissima Assunta, Le Lampare al Fortino, and Ristorante Taverna Portanova, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Riso Patate e Cozze (Porto di Trani) and Ristorante Taverna Portanova so you can get the best taste of Trani while you’re here. Catholic church
The Cathedral Basilica of Saint Nicholas the Pilgrim, also known as the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta or Santo Nicola Pellegrino, is a Romanesque Catholic cathedral in Trani, Italy. Made from local pink-white stone and completed mostly by the 1200s, it is an example of Apulian Romanesque architecture.
Basilica is free of charge and only entry to the tower costs 5€. There are about 298 stairs to climb to reach the peak (59 m). Unfortunately you cannot go outside and it is hard to take a good photo beacues of the nets that are installed in the windows, but still it is worthy as from up there you can see the whole castle and the see and it was magical for me. The entrance to the basilica is from the underground. There are nice frescoes in the crypt, but if you want to switch on the light to see them you must pay. The basilica made a huge impression on me. I have never seen a church located so close to the see. I really recommend to visit Trani and basilica.

We were able to visit at sunset and it was so beautiful. I cannot believe the colour of the stone. What a beautiful church.

Cathedral is one of the best places to see in the region. There is a lot of history, monuments to see. Unfortunately you can not take a guide inside. It’s located in lovely area, near the park and the port. The liturgy are normally about 10 pm. Inside is a little bit cold, but it’s normal like in this kind of buildings. You can go also to the underground.

Basilica at probably the most beautiful place in the world and a gem of a structure

Another great place to visit. Good place for eating fish and city views. Enjoy coffee. Do something else and avoid the cappuccino. Italians do not drink it after 1500. Get an espressino. Take a wild side around the Basilica.

The Catholic Cathedral of Maria de Santos is famous in Trani for being made of local pinkish-white marble and its majestic presence by the sea.

A beautifully restored church — definitely worth stepping inside. Please be respectful, keep noise to a minimum, and avoid taking photos. It’s wheelchair accessible, and entry was free when we visited. We enjoyed stopping by during an evening walk along the waterfront, followed by some gelato — a lovely experience overall.

Castello Svevo di Trani, a harborside castle constructed in 1233 by Frederick II of Swabia, is now open to the public as a museum. This medieval fortress was part of the network of fortifications built by Frederick II and is strategically located at the meeting point of land and sea. Made from the same stone as the cathedral, it features a quadrilateral perimeter with turrets at each corner.
An impressive 13th-century Swabian castle, a must-visit in Trani. The huge construction would be worth the visit alone, but to top it off you'll also get to see a part of the art collection of Margherita of Savoy, one of the last queens of Italy.
Ilias C — Google review
It’s was so beautiful to walk around the walls of the fortress 🙌 We watched the 12-minutes video about the castles and went for a walk on its walls. A great way to pass an hour in Trani The inside is a bit null
Paz L — Google review
The castle is right on the water and makes for a lovely photo. We basically had the castle to ourselves, only seeing two other people while there. Queen Marguerite's art collection is on display inside and the history of the castle is really interesting.
Alison C — Google review
One of the best-preserved medieval Swabian castles in the entire region, this fortress is steeped in legend. It is said to be haunted by two ghosts, and there are stories of a secret room where inhabitants would hide during sieges, as well as a mysterious underground passage that supposedly connected the castle to **Castel del Monte**, near Andria. However, this passage has never been discovered. I highly recommend enjoying the breathtaking view from the top of the castle towers.

Seaside castle. Internally is empty and a bit boring to walk around and don’t know the history. The best part is the outdoor walkway, with an amazing view . The cost of entry is €7 .

Beautiful castle with lots of history to unveil , particularly liked pictures of queen Margherita.
MIHAEL S — Google review
This castle is a must see in the heart of Trani! It is in excellent condition and it dates back to around 1233. There is a platform where you could get an excellent view of the ocean and the city. In addition, you will learn so much about the interesting history. For people who also like art, there is a great art exhibition upstairs that exhibits the Queen of Naples art collection of Italian art. Furthermore, the staff is super knowledgeable and friendly and will help you answer any questions you may have. I recommend that anyone visiting Trani comes here!!

On April 19, 2025, I visited this palace for the first time to see photographer Berengo Gardin’s exhibition. I asked if the exhibition catalog was available, but it wasn’t. The cashier—who was likely one of the managers—discounted my ticket from €10 to €8. She escorted me to the start of the ramp leading to the exhibition floor, removed the barrier tape to let me in, making me the first visitor of the day. She also mentioned that the same ticket granted access to the second and third floors, which house the Beltrani Palace of Arts’ permanent collections: Scaringi (his drawings were stunning) and Masiello. Among the donated works on display were pieces by Picasso (lithographs and etchings), Chagall (a lithograph or etching), Toulouse-Lautrec, Mirò (a woodcut or lithograph), and Dalì (woodcuts or lithographs).

Osteria La Banchina is a cozy eatery located on the waterfront that has been satisfying seafood lovers for over 20 years. The restaurant offers a variety of seafood and pasta dishes, which can be enjoyed in their snug dining room or on the covered terrace. One of their standout dishes is "ricci," a rare find that is praised for its freshness.
Osteria La Banchina had some of the best shrimp appetizers, and clams with linguine I have ever had! Very nice wine selection. Great service. Great food. Visited twice during our stay in Trani.

Nestled in a prime location on the port, this seafood restaurant is a true gem. The diverse and meticulously curated wine selection complements the fresh and flavorful dishes perfectly, all at a reasonable price. The service was prompt and efficient, enhancing our lunching experience. A standout dish was the Sea Urchin pasta, which was simply divine and left us craving more. Highly recommended for both seafood enthusiasts and wine aficionados!

I enjoyed the experience here, everything was fresh especially"ricci" not easy to find. The staff was kind and polite. If I have to find something that I didn't like, was just too much oil in the spaghetti as you can see in the picture, and I don't advise the tris appetiser cooked, instead try the fresh sea good it was delicious and for sure I'll come back

Le Lampare al Fortino is a renowned restaurant in Trani, offering breathtaking views of the port and sea. Housed in a 13th-century desecrated church, it provides a unique dining experience. The menu features delicious seafood dishes prepared in various styles, along with delectable Mediterranean options. While some visitors found the prices to be on the higher side compared to other restaurants in Puglia, many praised the quality of their meals.
We had two amazing, back to back dinners at Lampare. When I was first researching our stay in Trani I overlooked Lampare, thinking it was only for catered events. Let me tell you, if you can manage a visit (or two), do it. It is a beautiful building serving incredible food with the finest of service. For the quality of food and service, I found the prices to be quite reasonable. Both nights we had pasta with fresh lobster that was incredible. I also have to say that the pink grapefruit sorbetto is not to be missed if you are looking for something light and refreshing. It’s only been a couple months since our visit and we are already talking about a return!

Exceptional service, atmosphere and quality food. An amazing dining experience! Cannot say enough about how amazing the food was and the dining experience. The staff and their presentation and attention to detail was impeccable.

It is recommended as one of best restaurants ever in Puglia. I agree but need to go there again... The friends I went with were slightly disappointed as they tried a tuna stake 8 years ago and found it absolutely number one, this time the cooking of same tuna steak did leave them concerned. All of other dishes were good but not top. I want to try again my pasta main course, it left me 80% happy. Again ok but not aligning the price we paid for. The restaurant did not have any french wines that night. We still choose a good wine. But if it is a Michelin star I expect to find a wide variety of wines. That said the experience was good and I am going again as I feel like that night a big event at the restaurant did not help the cooks and chefs (I expect a star Michelin to manage such events and regular customers at tables though). Can't wait to go again.

A fine experience. Great service, great scenery. They kindly welcomed us and satisfied our special dietary needs. Outstanding seafood and delicious vegan options. Update: My family and I decided to come back here after 5 days. Once again a very pleasant experience. More and even better vegan options. The usually great sea food. Just book a table and enjoy your dinner. It is the most scenographic, elegant and delicious restaurant in Trani.

Lampare really was a sensational and unforgettable night - my husband and I will forever remember the incredible setting, impeccable service and how we were all made to feel so welcome. The food was excellent and we will always hold this place for a special place in our hearts. See you soon! ❤️

Enchanting dining experience in a restaurant that is beautifully situated at the inner "fortino", right on the ancient and picturesque port structure. A memorable choice for a party or an important celebration, the menu is refined and researched in the flavors, with no pre-made dishes and a relaxing timing to the serving of the courses. On a day with a light sea breeze, the meal would be very enjoyable right on the terrace.highly recommended the desserts, in particular the chocolate gran suofflé.

Riso Patate e Cozze is a beloved dish in Puglia, particularly in Bari. It's a delightful combination of rice, potatoes, mussels, tomatoes, garlic, parsley, and pecorino cheese all drizzled with extra virgin olive oil. Originally a traditional dish for feast days in Apulia, it has now become a staple. The flavors of the land and sea come together in this delectable meal.
Fantastic food, small menu what gives me the impression that everything can be and is fresh. So I like small menus! Great starter with octopus and tomatoes. Lovely tuna as main dish and my wife had a great pasta. Very nice wine with that, all in all a perfect lunch. The photo is of the starter, really lovely! It was quiet but off season so understandable. Try it!
Ramon Z — Google review
I noticed mixed reviews and was slightly apprehensive but ultimately the lovely ambience- outdoor tables, Italian pop music- drew me in. And the menu is what I would always want- a little choice but not too overwhelming. Mostly Puglian specialties from what I know. Anyway, it was an exceptional meal. The staff are of course busy but friendly enough, waiters spoke English happily which I appreciated. They do have menus in other languages which again almost caused me to dismiss it as ‘tourist trap’ but was ultimately helpful. I had the tortina with prawn and zucchini and I used the bread to mop up every inch. Then I tried rice with mussels and potatoes, and it was similarly delicious. The only slight negative is the wine was average but actually that added to the feeing of being in an unfussy Italian restaurant with just one type of wine, so in the end I didn’t really mind! I would recommend and even return if I ever find myself here again.
Kim S — Google review
Not very refined, but with good food. Simple and tasty cuisine. There is no choice of wines or spirits, but the local wine is good, it's a sort of fixed menu that everyone could enjoy. The bill is from "trattoria" and from the south of Italy, normal and honest. The problem, perhaps, is the dance music that comes from nearby clubs.
Agostino B — Google review
It's a nice little place. Food is ok, although we felt a bit weird after it. Service is a bit bad. Slow and we order two peroni and she brought one peroni and one pils not mentioning that pils is 1,5 euros more expensive. Doesn't matter so much in the end but since they charge service charge, would be nice to have service.

The food was too overpriced for the quality and quantity. By far the worst Tiramisu, I tasted in Puglia. The ambience was cheap.

The food was o.k. but nothing special for this high price... But the waiter was a zero star experience. The first 3 dishes we wanted to order were not available...but our neighbour table got this dish served a few minutes later. He wanted permanently to recommend dishes to us...i am the guest and i have to pay for it and so i want to decide what to eat. Maybe the wrong job for the waiter. 2 dishes came wrong to our table...we have not ordered this kind of fish. The waiter just said...its the same price as the other dish. If this is happening - that's possible for sure - the restaurant must offer a free dish or dessert or cafe...nothing was offered. Full price paid. I will never come back after this evening. Sorry

Palazzo Filisio Hotel Regia Restaurant offers modest accommodations in a sophisticated setting, complete with a dining establishment, complimentary breakfast, and Wi-Fi access. Guests can enjoy spacious and impeccably maintained rooms that provide panoramic views of either the Adriatic Sea and the port or the cathedral. The hotel ensures all expected amenities for a four-star establishment are provided. The staff is exceptionally helpful and hospitable, going so far as to arrange car tire repairs for guests.
We spent 5 days at Palazzo Filisio and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Apart from the hotel being in a beautiful location, the staff were very pleasant and accommodating. In particular I’d like to acknowledge Giovanna the front desk receptionist who was extremely helpful with organising car transport and taxis together with restaurant recommendations. Once again thank you Giovanna.

We were customers of restaurant, therefore my review is only about restaurant. We entered for dinner, passing by in the evening, not reading any review. It was a nice surprise, excelent food (ravioli for first dish and beef for second). I was offered to taste 3 wines until I got one I was looking for (excelent blend of Merlot and Syrah). Personnel was very careful and serving was by the book. Size of dishes are from my evaluation larger than in other local restaurants (first and second dishes was little to much for me). We are thinking next time to come to hotel too.

This modern hotel in a historic building has a great location and helpful and pleasant staff. It’s located Right on the harbor and next to the cathedral and castle. There is a lovely jetty to walk on. The city of Trani is pretty and very walkable. Snacks, wine, and water were available in the room. Breakfasts were delicious with a wide variety of hot and cold foods. My only gripe is that music from a party continued until 1:30 in the morning on Saturday night. The hotel is a popular site for birthdays and weddings.

Perfect if you stay in Trani and not leave the city, otherwise... First I must say that the hotel is excellent, from the friendly and very helpful service (I got great help in making restaurants’ reservations for almost what I wanted) to the spacious and very modern and clean room. Breakfast was also very good, many local amazing cheese and good espresso. Parking in front of the hotel was great as well. The only issue I had is that we took the car for trips outside Trani and to get back to the hotel was VERY tough especially at night after a long way of driving...

Fantastic experience - perfectly clean and spacious rooms with the view of the Adratic&the port or the cathedral and all the amenities to expect for a 4-start hotel. A really helpful and friendly staff (they even arranged a repair service for my car tire problem!) Upon arrival in in December, I even found an extra heater running in the room which made it pleasantly warm. The breakfast is a dream - local cheeses (including even stracciatella) and bresaola, and the cakes from the chef (the miringa was a real experience, just delicious). And the fish dishes in the restaurant are really worth trying! All in all, one of the best hotels I stayed, can really recommend.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 So good, we went twice – a true culinary gem in Trani! Quintessenza absolutely impressed us. The dishes are refined, creative, and deeply rooted in Apulian tradition. Every detail – from the ingredients to the presentation – was perfectly thought out and beautifully executed. We ended up dining here twice during our stay because it was simply that good. A special thanks to Domenico, who took care of us both evenings – professional, warm, and genuinely passionate about his work. His service made the experience even more memorable. The atmosphere is calm, elegant, and welcoming – the perfect setting for a truly special evening. If you love exceptional food and thoughtful service, this place is a must. Highly recommended!

Outstanding service from all the team, with a shout-out for Domenico who was knowledgeable, informative and generous with his time in discussing the food, wine and all matters Pugilese. The local red wine, San Valentino from Villa Schinosa, was excellent and perfect accompaniment for the deer. The amusés were beautiful and a taste sensation; the starter of tuna was outstanding with a melt in the mouth texture; the scampi was delicate accompanied by gossamer thin seaweed crackers; Gargano to Salento was a rolled offal dish, with a rich but well+balanced flavour; the deer with cherries and beetroot carpacio was so tender, well seared but pink in the middle; and as for the Apulian Farmer's breakfast dessert (shared)......such simple ingredients, perfectly prepared and elegantly presented. A memorable evening and at €200 a reasonable price for both location and quality.

As I reflect on my visit to this place, I find myself struggling to find the right words to describe it. The beauty of every detail is strikingly impressive, especially the food they serve. I haven't come across another place that even comes close to matching the excellence of this one. The table at the winery is an experience that you simply can't afford to miss. It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that you'll cherish forever.

An exclusive restaurant, very professionally run by four brothers. The warm welcome and communication throughout the dinner left an indelible impression. The dishes surprise not only with their taste combinations, but also with their unique stories. Undoubtedly, Quintessenza is a place where you want to come.

One of the best dining experiences we have ever had! This beautiful venue is host to a team of amazing staff who are truly passionate about what they do. The food was delicious! We had the tasting menu and went for wine pairing too, every dish was full of flavour and the simple use of fantastic ingredients along with perfect seasoning and finesse in the delivery of each plate of food made for an overall five star meal. The wines were both unusual and tasty and each wine went well with the dish it was presented with. We started with a fantastic local sparkling wine as well which blew us away! The staff were so attentive, friendly and smiling and taking care of our every need and question. We would highly recommend this as a must visit restaurant if you have the budget and are visiting Trani!
