Poitiers in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Poitiers, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Poitiers offers a mix of medieval charm, Romanesque architecture, and relaxed small-city life in western France. The city is known for landmarks such as the Romanesque Église Notre-Dame-la-Grande and the historic Baptistery of Saint-Jean, one of the oldest Christian monuments in France. Its compact old town invites wandering through narrow streets, lively squares, and café terraces, while nearby Futuroscope theme park adds a family-friendly, high-tech attraction.
With favorites like Galerie Beaulieu Poitiers, Parc Floral La Roseraie, and Memphis, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Memphis and Boulangerie Feuillette so you can get the best taste of Poitiers while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

The whole place smells like an ashtray, the rroms were very small and the shower was impossible if you're bigger than the average person. I would never stay here again or recommend this hotel to anyone.

Churches & Cathedrals
The Cathédrale Saint-Pierre de Poitiers, also known as the Poitiers Cathedral, is a magnificent example of Gothic architecture located in the heart of Poitiers, France. Construction on this ancient Catholic landmark began in 1162 and took over 200 years to complete. The cathedral is renowned for its ornate facade and stunning 13th-century stained-glass windows.
built in the 12th-13th century, with magnificent stained glass windows and paintings. Looking above the choir, you can admire one of the oldest stained-glass windows in France. This is the Crucifixion window, which measures 3.10m wide and 8.35 m high. It was commissioned by Eleanor of Aquitaine in the years 1160 to 1170, when the current Gothic cathedral was beginning to be built.
Xavier L — Google review
Very old and impeccably preserved stained glasses, which are hard to find elsewhere. This is a sizeable ancient churches of historical and architectural interest. The wall paintings are rather washed out but the ceilings are still crisp in the side chapel. There are multiple explicative notes translated in english so it's inclusive for tourists. Be mindful of the time of your visits as you can't tour it while in use for religious functions.
Philippe — Google review
It is the outside that makes this building into a cathedral as it is spoiled with 3 different arches heavily decorated. The interior only has in parts of the church his medieval paintwork and it also contains some exceptional glass windows which are abundantly detailed with scenes from the live of Jesus.
Bart E — Google review
Poitiers is famous for its historic victories over Al-Andalus, particularly the Battle of Tours and Portiers in early 8th century, where Charles Martel halted the advance of Muslim forces into Western Europe. These victories marked a turning point in European history and helped preserve Christian rule in continental Europe („Rettung des Abendlandes“). Poitiers Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral in the city of Poitiers. Built mainly in the 12th-13th centuries, it is a prime example of early Gothic architecture in western France. Commissioned by King Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine, the cathedral features a wide façade with three large doorways and stunning stained glass windows, including a famous 12th-century Crucifixion window. The interior is spacious, with a wooden vaulted ceiling and richly decorated choir stalls.
Uly W — Google review
Stunning cathedral and one that should he visited and seen when in Poiters. So much to see inside as each part has a unique feature. Beautiful and peaceful 🙏
Matt- F — Google review
Saint-Pierre de Poitiers Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral located in Poitiers, in the Vienne department and the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. It is the seat of the archdiocese of Poitiers. In addition to its title of archiepiscopal church, it has had the rank of minor basilica since March 1, 1912. Less well known than the Notre-Dame-la-Grande church, this immense stone vessel is nevertheless the largest religious building in the city and a landmark visible from afar in the urban landscape. Built on the initiative of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henry II Plantagenêt from 1160, consecrated in 1379, it is in the Angevin Gothic style (use of curved vaults on a square plan) and is similar to the hall churches by its division into three vessels of almost equal height. The façade, flanked by two unfinished towers, borrows elements from the stylistic grammar of northern France. The interior preserves stalls from the 13th century and a collection of historiated stained-glass windows dating from the 12th and 13th centuries, including a Crucifixion, one of the peaks of French medieval stained glass art. The current cathedral was begun in the second half of the twelfth century, around 1162 according to Abbé Auber; it was financed by the bishop and the cathedral chapter but also perhaps by the Duchess of Aquitaine, Eleanor of Aquitaine (1122-1204), and her husband Henry II of England Plantagenêt (1133-1189), as by all the faithful. The construction was long because the church was not definitively consecrated until October 17, 1379. The construction was carried out in seven successive campaigns. They did not follow a predefined plan, which explains many repentances and resumptions during the construction site. Indeed, the initial party, an Angevin Gothic with curved vaults, appeared more and more archaic as the work lengthened. The desire to build up to date clashed with the constructive choices made during previous work.

Lovely food and service. I spoke french but when heard husband speaking English offered to speak English.
Arlene S — Google review
I really liked the fries, the meat quality was not the best. I would not recommend the burger menu and angus steak. The service was terribly slow! It was 2 PM and I couldn’t imagine if we came on the peak lunch time. They let my sundae melted on the front table and still served it :)
Evi L — Google review
Good burgers at a reasonable price. Servers are very nice and responsive. Avoid it during french eating times (noon) as quality and serving speed decrease a lot. Had a rude female manager that made it lose a star.

Bakery
If you're on the hunt for an authentic artisan bakery and patisserie, look no further than Boulangerie Feuillette. This charming establishment offers a delightful array of baked goods, including everything from scrumptious cakes and fresh bread to savory quiches and mouthwatering sandwiches. A visit here is incomplete without indulging in their flaky croissants or trying their famous duck sandwich, which many travelers rave about.
Very busy but it proves it's worth the wait. And it is worth the wait and the price, huge choice from bread, sweet and savoury bakery, drinks, salads, pasta boxes, cakes, biscuits - anything you could think of really. I wish I had it where i live.

Best breakfast place in France. Their duck sandwich is to die for. I have got out of my way to actually come here and eat. The ambiance is so cozy and comfortable, service is efficient and polite, prices are reasonable and their brioche is beautiful!!! As well as all the other pastries, to be fair. I’ve tried many of them and they are all delicious and fresh. Don’t miss this place!

Toqué! Cuisine Bistro offers contemporary, seasonal dishes in a simple dining room adorned with black and white prints. It is an authentic French restaurant that provides impeccable service. The menu features fantastic options, all prepared with meticulous attention to detail. This hidden gem has delightful staff and serves beautifully cooked steaks. The verrine de faisselle de chevres au betteraves is especially delicious.
Excellent food for a very reasonable price. Just outside the crowded main streets. We went back 2 times for dinner after a pleasant lunch. Tried more or less the entire card and every dish was tasteful, well prepared and nicely presented. The entrecote griller was a little overcooked for 'medium done', but that to our taste. A couple of very nice deserts, like 'one meter crème brulé'. Highly recommended.
