The Cathedral of Gela, also known as the Mother Church, is a centuries-old religious site that has undergone meticulous restoration. It houses the revered painting of Madonna D'Alemanna, the town's patron saint. The church is a focal point during the celebration of her feast day on September 8th, marked by the colorful Palio dell'Alemanna procession.

(Translated by Google) The Church of Carmine in Gela, which overlooks Piazza Roma in front, is dedicated to the Madonna del Monte Carmelo and probably dates back to the 16th century. It was built together with the adjacent convent, by the PP. Carmelites. It has a single nave with a postero-lateral bell tower, ten side windows, on whose glass there is a decorated cross and eight chapels with altars. The bell tower has a spire covered with majolica tiles. Originally there was the old domed bell tower damaged in the last war. The architecture of the church is simple in style, with stucco capitals. On the floor of the church, after the entrance, there is a box with the writing "CAN.ROSARIO DAMAGGIO DIED IN 1938". On the ceiling of the nave there are two panels with stucco decorations and a canvas depicting the scene of the "Suppressed Storm". On the right side we find a marble stoup from 1571, with a basin on the edge of which the Carmelite coat of arms is depicted. In the interior of the religious building there are several painted altarpieces from the 1700s. On the right side: the paintings "the Carmelite Saints and "San Giuseppe" and the statues of San Rocco and the Madonna del Carmine. Between the third and fourth chapel, a wooden pulpit created by Baldassare Accomando, a local artist. On the left side: the paintings "Martyrdom of San Lorenzo" and "The Annunziata" and then the heart of Jesus statue. A particular painting on wood, on a gold background, of the Crucifixion (perhaps the most valuable work of art in the church), depicts Christ on the cross, the Madonna and Saint John. This board was used to close the case of the paper mache Crucifix. Then there is a 1917 organ with 9 registers and finally a 15th century papier-mâché statue of the Crucifix, in the central chapel. Fu edificata assieme all’attiguo convento, dai PP. Carmelitani.

On the facade of the church a beautiful Romanesque style portal stands out. Inside there are several works of art dating back to the 19th century, a series of paintings dating back to the beginning of this century, a stoup from 1571 and an organ dating back to 1917. Also worth mentioning is the Fifteenth Century Crucifix, painted on a panel on a gold background and considered miraculous by the population. Ex Granai del Palazzo Ducale is a historic site that once served as the castle granaries. Today, it has been repurposed into an exhibition hall where visitors can explore special exhibits and enjoy great views of the surrounding area. The palace also hosts various events, making it a must-see attraction in the area. Additionally, nearby Palazzo Pignatelli houses town hall offices and offers its own unique exhibits for visitors to enjoy.

(Translated by Google) These buildings, miraculously still standing, are a true jewel in the heart of the historic center of Gela. These are the granaries of a ducal complex, built between the 14th and 16th centuries, around the central courtyard of what was the Terranova di Sicilia Castle, which has unfortunately been replaced by a condominium since the 1960s. What remains, the granaries, were used in the 2000s as a venue for exhibitions and cultural events, although the internal area was left in disrepair where, in the 1990s, due to excavations for the construction of a public car park, vestiges of ancient structures from various eras and finds dating back to the medieval, archaic and classical periods have been found. It is a real shame, however, that in 2024 it is still in a state of total abandonment and there is no mention whatsoever of a redevelopment of the structure and the internal and surrounding areas. For its historical, artistic and cultural importance it deserves 5 stars, but I am forced to leave only 1 due to the total neglect in which art and history are forced to survive in this city.

The dough was really good and the pizzas were good. We especially appreciated the baked potato, sausage and parmesan that was suggested by the app, truly delicious! (Translated by Google) Starting from the Archaeological Museum and walking along the first stretch of Corso Vittorio Emanuele, just before Piazza Calvario there is this take-away pizzeria and diner, which I visited on the evening of Sunday 27 March to order a family Margherita, and while waiting (short ) I tried a ham calzone. I paid 10 euros for the pizza and 1.80 euros for the calzone. Thin, light dough and good quality ingredients for both. Successful leavening as can be seen from the photo of the slice in section. Positive rating, despite some burns on the edge. The thermal box (one of the strong points of this place) is not provided for family pizzas. I don't give the fourth star because the guys who run it, although it cannot be said that they are not polite, can still improve by taking greater care of the welcome and communication with the customer.

Instead of the typical a la carte ordering system, the restaurant offers a uniform and variable menu featuring heavenly Sicilian starters. The main course includes delicious beef steak. Visitors have praised the establishment for its satisfying portion sizes and high-quality red wine selection.
My wife and I stopped here for our first Sicilian dinner on our honeymoon and we were not disappointed! There did not appear to be a menu, but we were offered some antipasti to share, beef carpaccio and bread to start with. There was a varied selection of items that were all tasty and well prepared; the carpaccio was especially delicious. For our main course we were offered a selection of grilled beef, veal and pork; this was dressed with oil, oregano and lemon, perfectly seasoned with salt and served with bread. This was all meltingly soft and delicious. Dessert was a generous helping of lemon sorbet, along with a pistachio and ricotta cannoli, which rounded the meal off perfectly. We ate well and drank a glass each of local red wine (not too acidic, unoaked, with an interesting pepperyness and herbal tones). We also shared a litre bottle of Coca-Cola. The service was an exemplar of good hospitality (we were made to feel very welcome) and we would highly recommend anyone visit who is after an authentic experience (the restaurant appeared to be full of locals). The conto came to 65€, which felt like a bargain!

OMG, best steak I've ever had! Staff was friendly and accommodating even though I don't speak Italian. Reasonable prices, good wine and generous portions! I think I found my dinner place for my entire vacation. Make sure you save room for the cannoli and lemon sorbet!

there was no menu a la carte for dinner. They offered a closed dinner of antipasti and some grilled meat for 30€ per person. We only wanted to order appetizers but could not choose. We were served some lukeworm antipasti for 22€ per person which seemed expensive. I imagine the grilled meat must be good, but beware of the closed menu.

Could not find the place which is a hidden gem. The owner is an ex-butcher who knows his meat! Take what is available, forget about the menus. Excellent stay and divine meat and antipasti. Will return in my next visit.

Museo Archeologico Regionale di Gela is a must-visit attraction in the charming coastal town of Gela, Sicily. It stands out as one of the most important museums in southern Italy and the Mediterranean, alongside other renowned cities like Siracusa, Palermo, Agrigento, and Catania. The museum boasts an impressive collection of archaeological finds from various periods spanning prehistory to the Middle Ages.
There are some remarkable exhibitions in this small but lovely museum

Only half of the exhibition is visible .The rest is because of damage by rainwater or construction work for visitors not reachable. A lttle bit disapointing for visitors.

Greek civilization artefacts in very good condition. The island was a Greek colony. I’m not giving 5 stars for the lack of english language and lack of an english guide tour. No AC. Crazy hit in the summer. Maybe it’s just temporary.

More than expected, the archeological museum showcases a good collection of ancient objects. The terrace offers a good view of the Greek acropolis just beside.

The whole place was set up for walking in a certain direction. Best part was the wing with all the coins. Two gentleman did not allow our group to see the column because one of the men had to unlock the gate but neither would. Our group was told to take photos from the balcony almost 100 yards from the item we came to see.

Employees who really don't care , flickering lights that don't let you see the exhibits , an image of abandonment which the great treasures that are stored in do not deserve. Shame on the local authorities for not preserving their ancient heritage.

Regional Archaeological Museum of Gela can be considered together with Siracusa, Palermo, Agrigento, Catania among the most important in southern Italy and in the Mediterranean. There are contents, archaeological finds, inscriptions, coins, architectural elements and much more from various periods from prehistory to the Middle Ages. However, the collection of the classical and Greek era is impressive. Unmissable visit for tourists who want to discover Sicily and relive some of its most significant testimonies. Welcome, I recommend to visit the museum with a local guide. :)

Disìu - Bistrot Siciliano is a cozy bistro located in the city center, offering Sicilian cuisine with a modern twist. The arancina starter may not have been outstanding, but the burrata and bresaola platter was delicious, complemented by high-quality olive oil and fresh basil. Visitors praise the unique design that blends traditional Sicilian elements with modern touches. The impeccable service and sensational cuisine make it a must-visit spot in Gela.
Sicilian cuisine with a modern touch, in a cozy location, right in the city center. Although the arancina ordered as a starter didn't impress me much (tasted way better ones in Palermo), the burrata and bresaola plateau, splashed with good quality extra-virgin olive oil and topped with a leave of fresh basil was delicious. The sea food spaghetti, drizzled with bread crumbs were also yummy. Ended up the dinner in style with a shot of Vecchio Amaro del Capo. A good Sicilian diner, overall.

(Translated by Google) Capuchin friars, who arrived in the city of Gela[1] in 1571, occupied the ancient complex (13th century), partly crumbling, which until 1481 had been inhabited by the Minor Conventual friars. In 1730 a crypt was built under the church for the burial of the friars. With the suppression of the religious orders in 1866, the entire complex was expropriated and the convent destined for civic uses (lazaretto, hospital, shelter for foundlings). In 1935 the church, initially dedicated to Santa Maria degli Angeli, was restored, enlarged (with the addition of the left nave) and consecrated to San Francesco and the Madonna delle Grazie; and then underwent further building interventions in 1944, which saw the reconstruction of the façade in neo-Gothic style, the elimination of the fourteenth-century portal and the addition of two towers with cusps. In the 1950s the convent was demolished and a new and larger structure was built to house the minor seminary. In 1962 the church was equipped with a third nave (the one on the right) and in 1966 it was erected as a parish with the title of Madonna delle Grazie. July 2nd is the feast of the Madonna delle Grazie, with the solemn procession and blessing of the children.

It happens that, as I pass by and there is a little bit of calm, I stop, go in, sit down and an air of profound peace envelops me. From that moment begins what I call "communion", that form of dialogue between two, silent, unique and profound. A phenomenon that does not happen in all Churches because perhaps they are more "dispersed" and do not allow the concentration that this small and particular environment offers. The Monks are helpful and good and from this Church comes the "Madonna delle Grazie" which is celebrated in the great month of July. I recommend it and... good communion.

Ancient Ruins
Nestled along the stunning coastline, the Timoleontee Walls stand as a testament to ancient Greek engineering prowess. These fortifications, recently uncovered and remarkably preserved, offer visitors a glimpse into history while dominating the landscape from their elevated position. The walls not only serve as an impressive defensive structure but also provide breathtaking views of the surrounding area. Nearby, you can explore remnants of Italy's oldest public baths, adding to the archaeological allure of this site.
(Translated by Google) Discover the majestic Timoleonte Walls surrounding the city, a masterpiece of ancient engineering that remains one of the most impressive examples of a mixed-media defensive structure. Recently unearthed, a section of the fortification is surprisingly well preserved and offers a spectacular window into the past. On the northern side of the hill, these walls unfold in a complex manner to dominate and protect the plain below, as well as one of the main gateways to the city. The western end of the walls extends boldly towards the countryside, embracing the crest of the hill and descending dizzily towards the slopes that flow directly into the sea. To the east, the wall continues well beyond the visible section, reconnecting with the ancient fortifications. The entrance system to the city was characterized by two main gates: an imposing door with a pointed arch, subsequently closed by a mud brick wall, and another entrance to the west, more austere, with linear jambs and an architrave which was always reinforced over time with raw bricks. After its ruin by Fintia, the tyrant of Agrigento, Gela was desolately abandoned, and the wall lost its original defensive function. I invite all lovers of history and archeology to visit this incredible site. A place where you can almost hear the echo of ancient battles and feel the weight of the history that every stone preserves. Don't miss the opportunity to walk next to these ancient walls which still tell stories of a distant time.

Montelungo Beach is a hidden gem with low traffic, making it a beautiful and peaceful destination. The wide and clean sandy beach offers picturesque spots for photography and enjoying stunning sunsets. While lacking in amenities, the clear sea makes it worth bringing your own supplies. (Translated by Google) When I go to Gela and want to eat a great diner, I have no doubts. As a good Sicilian, it is not easy to find places where they offer flavors that make you dream with every taste. Without spending too much, you eat good quality, well-made food. It's a shame that the place is small and having to stay apart doesn't help much. At the counter they are quick and alert, the only thing missing is a smile, even if I can understand the work behind it. If I really have to break, do something for those who are vegan too!
