Estremoz in 3 days

If you only have 3 days to spend in Estremoz, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Estremoz is a historic Alentejo hill town known for its white marble, which appears in everything from its castle walls to local sidewalks and sculptures. The medieval citadel and 13th-century castle tower offer wide views over vineyards, olive groves and cork oak countryside. Within the old town you’ll find traditional weekly markets, regional crafts (notably the colorful Estremoz clay figurines, a UNESCO-listed craft), and hearty Alentejan cuisine and wines. Its location also makes it a convenient base for exploring nearby Évora, Vila Viçosa and other historic towns of the region.
With favorites like Legacy Winery Restaurant, Café Alentejano, and João Portugal Ramos Wines, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Restaurante Alecrim and Imperador dos Caracóis so you can get the best taste of Estremoz while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Restaurant
Venda Azul in Estremoz is a delightful dining spot that captures the essence of traditional Portuguese hospitality. Nestled within the charming old city, this restaurant boasts an inviting atmosphere where solo diners and groups alike feel right at home. The menu features daily specials, with the grilled black pork being a standout dish that you simply cannot miss on your first visit. The attentive staff are known for their multilingual service, ensuring everyone feels welcomed and well taken care of.
Wonderful typical restaurant in Estremoz. The service is super nice and polite, fast and efficient. The starters were super tasty, We chose the chourico and the prawns. The main courses were the "tamboril" rice and the "migas" alentejanas, both were delicious. The deserts were heavenly.
Hugo P — Google review
A local recommended this place, and I'm certainly glad that we took her up on this recommendation. We, a party of four, were each greeted like royalty, a firm handshake to all and a big 'thank you for coming today'. We truly felt welcomed. Service was great and the dishes even better. My wife and I shared a dish for two and we could not eat it all. We should have ordered a dish for one and split it. It was a great experience dining here. A gastronomical delight.
Kenneth D — Google review
We stumbled upon this local restaurant in Estremoz purely by luck while looking for a place to eat, and we can definitely recommend it. The portions are huge and the food is tasty. The staff is helpful and the service is quick. This is a typical tasca there's no fine dining here, so it's important to come prepared for that kind of relaxed, traditional experience. Knowing what to expect, I would absolutely come back if I'm in the area again.
Francesco R — Google review
Great food, really big portions, low prices and the staff is really nice. We couldn't finish our dishes(both photos are half portions). Traditional food from the area. You'll be mixed with locals which is always a good sign .
Rodrigo C — Google review
Great local spot. Large portions and extremely nice staff. We had cod grilled with oil and corriander, iberian pork tenderloin (fantastic) with rice and black beans. Recommend both.
Earl G — Google review
Very friendly staff! Enjoyed the food and dining here immensely and will be back! Large portions

Science museum
Museums
Centro Ciência Viva de Estremoz is an interactive science museum housed in the Renaissance Convento das Maltesas. It offers hands-on galleries covering various topics such as evolution, the solar system, geology, volcanoes, and underwater exploration. The staff are passionate about the center and provide interesting guided tours. Visitors can see a T-Rex exhibit for a small fee.
Great Museum. We were lucky enough to get a guided tour by Bruno, who did an amazing job explaining the exhibits to our daughter, very engaging and knowledgeable.
Marco H — Google review
So many thinga to know about dinossaurs and the planet. Kids really like it and Bruno was a top guide! Recommend to get there at 10am to get the full tour.
Gon L — Google review
A little hidden gem. For me, this is one of the best science museums in Portugal, not because of it's size or quantity of experiences, but because of the reduced amount of visitors (its in a small city) and the way staff manage it. Whitst other science museums in Portugal are very much "go and do your own thing" and where children & adults go around and try everything for as long as they want, this one stood out for me with it's personalised learning experience that is super fun and educational for children. The instructor speaks well in both English and Portuguese, and it's great at explaining things. They can afford to do this due to the low amount of visitors (there was only us and another couple during our visit), but we literally had an instructor from the start to the end of the visit, explaining things about dinosaurs, density, volcanos, earthquakes, under water pressure (inside a fake submarine) and rock formations as the "guided" visit went on. All the children were super engaged and it created the perfect sinergy between fun and education. Beyond this, you can also see a nearly full size replica of a T-Rex right as the visit starts - you can imagine how that's super cool for children (and for adults that want their IG selfies, Google reviews, etc). :) 100% recommended.
Rui M — Google review
Covers dinosaur and geology mostly. Plenty of interactive exhibits. I turned up with a 9 and 11 year old and got a 2 hour tour in English. The great advantage of going of a museum off the beaten track!

Great food, quite friendly staff, amazing dessert, fair prices.

Quality of food was good and the beer was tasty. Only thing that lets it down was they brought a starter when I hadn’t order one and because I’m used to Spanish restaurants I presumed it was a free appetiser. Obviously I was charged for a starter and my main including the beers which was fairly reasonable but I just wasn’t happy overall with been given a start an without asking for one. Had I known I would’ve declined the starter. I guess it’s a Portuguese restaurant thing.
Carlos L — Google review
The food is good, well prepared regional food. Service is a mix of noisy afrobeat with old furniture. A good service and another music choice would benefit the place a lot.

Poor service. Very slooooooow. Menu was very limited. Food below average. Staff is nice though.

Nestled in the charming town of Estremoz, Restaurante Alecrim stands out as a delightful culinary destination. With its inviting atmosphere and attentive staff, it offers a diverse menu that caters to all palates. Diners can indulge in an array of dishes, from refreshing gazpacho to hearty beef cheeks paired with creamy mashed potatoes and vibrant spinach. The extensive wine list complements each meal perfectly, ensuring a memorable dining experience for everyone.
Love the atmosphere of this restaurant! With a very unique cousin of Alentejo. We try the stewed beef cheeks it was delicious! And for dessert we tried two: a strawberry mousse with yogurt cake and Greek yogurt ice cream and a chocolate mousse with vanilla ice cream with a hazelnut and salted caramel sauce.

A really nice restaurant in the center of Estremoz. The food was good and serves as an excellent example of Alentejo cuisine. We definitely recommend this place. It's not on the cheap side, but the quality is high and the service was quick, making it a great choice overall.
Francesco R — Google review
Went there with a very large group (around 14 people) and the staff was great to accommodate everyone. This was a second year in a row that we went there since it’s on the way to a wine event I usually go and I have to say that they improved from last year. The food was good but some hit and misses, with some of the appetizers being great like the presunto/jamon, with the truffle eggs being good but the “peixinhos da horta” being too oily. The bread could also be much better. The mains dishes were a different story, with a number of meat dishes shared and everything great or very good with a special mention to the “presas of porco preto” which was a daily special and the pork was just to die for. The cow meat was also very good but we asked one medium rare which came more on the rare side and a medium well which came more on the well side, so some issues there. The wine list is very good and focused on the Alentejo area. Almost no space for deserts but still shared a couple but nothing was great. For kids they have limited plates and not that adjusted (one plate can feed two kids). Service was very nice and accomodating but some time was hard to find employees. A bit on the expensive side, specially for the area, even considering we had wine.

I could not miss to mention that the place lies in such-a a peaceful location in the city. love the Mushrooms pizza and a lovely apple pie. My lovely wife loved this place ao much i couldn't wait to come back again.

The attentive staff, fluent in English, adds value to the dining experience. This restaurant presents an appealing alternative to crowded establishments like "Venda Azul," providing traditional dishes and desserts at affordable prices.
very nice waiters, they transleted the menu from Portugese to English. The food was tasty and relatevly cheap.

Mr António Oliveira has started to work at 12 and now owns this place. It is small in size and humble in choices, but the only waiter I saw was attentive, helpful, and transmitted all our requests to the kitchen for a great service. It was an August friday afternoon - Saturday is the market day, so, everybody gets crazy - the restaurant was full but people were having their lunch in a quiet and organized way. It was a good experience and a fair price.

Delicious bifanas and huge portions of some other tapas like pica-pau. Service is rough around the edges as you'd expect. Very reasonable prices.

Horrible, absolutely hated it. So first, we got there. An elder man offered us a table because it was packed. We said thank you and accepted it. We satand waited for a menu. We soon realized the man was drunk. He wouldnt leave us alone and he smoked and had a drink and he pulled hash out of his pockets. The waiters never got rid of him and we had to get him to leave after about 20 minutes. They waited for him to leave and then come ask for our orders. The waitress came to us and asked us what to drink. We told her and then she asked for our meal. We told her we didnt even get our menu yet. Shr gave us 1 to share for all 4 of us. She stood there sort of rushing us a bit and didnt give us much time too look. Also, I used the bathroom and there were no paper towels to dry my hands, there were flies everywhere, and it stinks. Another thing is when I walked into the resturaunt, there was a bucket on the floor catching dripping water. The floors were duiscusting too. Also, we asked for our bill and it wouldnt accept our credit card. We had to pay in cash. And also, the food wasnt very good. I do not reccomend and will never go again.

Mercearia Gadanha in Estremoz is a standout restaurant known for its innovative take on traditional Portuguese cuisine and an impressive wine and gourmet shop. Chef Michele Marques's delightful desserts are a highlight, making it a must-visit for food enthusiasts. The restaurant also offers a charming deli that sells gourmet treats like local ham, cheese, and chocolates.
We booked for lunch on a Saturday after visiting the lovely local market. I was expecting a very casual place given the setting within a shop, but we were all blown away by the quality of the food. The restaurant was buzzing with happy diners, including many local families. We did not have time for dessert but wish we had, as they looked amazing.

That kind of Alentejano place: cool and hot, familial and distributed into small tables, hard benches and nice atmosphere. You can find a little of all the flavours and tastes. And the usual niceness of country people.

The food and service were both very good here. Just be aware that this restaurant is definitely not on the cheap side. Absolutely loved our experience at Gadanha. Service, food and venue well situated. They have a great deli/shop before entering the dining space. Good selection of products for sale. Menu on the €€€ side but meal was well prepared. Desert was the peace-de-restance. Toodelicious for words.

Excellent soups and lamb chops. Most of the other dishes were disappointingly salty or chewy. The intensity of the salty sauce made one of the dishes unbearable. I asked for plain rice in order to salvage the salty dish, but the chef denied the request. Thus it went to waste. What a shame.

Museum
Museu Berardo Estremoz, a relatively new addition to the city's cultural scene, is housed in the historic Tocha Palace. The museum showcases an extensive collection of tiles spanning over 800 years, including late Baroque and Rococo azulejos adorning the palace's interior walls. The inaugural exhibition features the largest private collection of tiles in Portugal, with pieces from Portugal, Spain, and even Holland.
Wonderful museum of the history of tiling and believe me there's a lot of it with tiles from the 14th century to today. There are explanatory notes in Portuguese, French and English and there's a free wine tasting at the end of the tour. I'd recommend this museum to anyone visiting Estremoz, in fact it's the best thing to see. It's a measly 3.5 Euros to get in.

We are fans of art and made items (we love craft fairs, galleries, traditional made items and just absorbing culture) The place is absolutely fantastic. The building itself has been completely restored and is quite remarkable. The original marble, vaulted ceilings and amazing light were made even more enjoyable by the cool climate controlled environment. The staff are knowledgeable and multi lingual and delighted to answer questions of all kinds. The ceramic tile exhibition is vast, beautifully grouped and displayed. You can take photographs and there are clear information labels for every piece from the 12th century to date (may be earlier - don’t quote me) There is a huge catalogue which can be accessed and downloaded free on the website. No touristy shop but a beautiful wine selection as your last port of call- and the ticket included a wine tasting of red, white and Muscadet. There is a lift and the loos are great. We were blown away by the exhibition and found it to be world class. There are concessions for older people, students and families. Oh ….and if you go on the first Tuesday of the month your tickets are free and still include the wine tasting.

This museum is a MUST-SEE if you find yourself in the Alentejo region! The Museu Berardo is truly astonishing. I'm not just referring to the amazing collection of azulejos (tiles), but to the building itself, which is a real gem.

In this small provincial town, in the 19th century Tocha Palace constructed by the military family Silveira, this absolutely extraordinary museum of 800 years of tile history is a private collection in an immaculate curation, for only €3/pax incl. a glass of wine, culminating with an explosion of 5 fabulous Vhils tile artworks.

Easily one of the most beautiful museums I have ever been to. We had the museum to ourselves and enjoyed the exhibits and the restoration on the property itself. Enjoyable for adults and children. Kind staff. Wine tasting at the end, phenomenal. And we received wonderful dinner recommendations. Not to be missed.

This is a gem. I liked it more than the national museum in Lisbon. The staff offered us a guided tour, this helped us a lot getting the know the history of all the tiles. The wine tasting at the end is a bonus!

Restaurant
Casa do Pixa Negra in Estremoz offers a family-friendly and traditional atmosphere. Despite its unassuming appearance, this hidden gem serves authentic Alentejo cuisine in a clean and spacious setting. The tavern is known for its traditional dishes like 'Sopa de Cacao' and 'Acorda a Alentejana,' prepared by an experienced cook. Visitors praise the friendly staff, although language barriers may be encountered.
This is one of the "hidden gems" of Estremoz... A most traditional "old style" TABERNA, with its long marble balcony, mostly frequented by locals, a great cook (an Alentejo old Lady) who does serve thr most typical dishes of this region,, like "Sopa de Cação", or Açorda à Alentejana"... And the icing on the cake is that it is not expensive at all, with a complete meal for 2 around or below 20€...! Not to be missed! And... as a suggestion, if you are looking for accomodation in the area, check "Quinta de EVORAMONTE"! Another "well hidden gem" of great confort and quality, where Privacy, and Total Peace is an accalade apreciated by its Guests...!

A very old "tasca", excellent experience, great food, a trip to the old Estremoz when your wine was served directly from the talha.

Was recommended to go here as a great "locals" restaurant. Maybe it is for the locals but after waiting over an hour for my food to come after I placed my order while watching actual locals(At least four different parties) come in after I did, place their orders, get ithem, eat them, pay and leave before my food came was a little aggravating. I know, I know, slower pace of life in Portugal but again, so many others getting their food right away really soured my experience at this place. Kept trying to ask the hostess where my food was and I just kept getting the hands response of it's coming. The actual food itself was pretty good but there was just no enjoying it past a certain point.

Adega do Zé Varunca is a charming restaurant located in Estremoz, offering a delightful rustic atmosphere and excellent value for money. The menu features a variety of well-prepared regional dishes, including steak, lamb, pork, and fish cooked on the large outdoor barbecue. The traditional cellar boasts long benches and typical decor, creating an authentic ambiance. Locals frequent this establishment regularly, attracted by the good wine list that includes their own produced red wine.
The Grilled meat plate for two people is fantastic. The meats were Grilled to perfection and the taste was delicious. Dessert was tasty although a bit on the sweet side. I would return and highly recommend.

Nestled in the heart of a vibrant culinary scene, Restaurante Larau stands out as a gem among high-end dining options. With Chef Filipe Bilro at the helm, this establishment has introduced an exciting focus on fish and seafood, enriching the already diverse gastronomic landscape. The restaurant is conveniently located near free public parking, making it easily accessible for visitors exploring the town.
The food is very delicious, especially the meat. The local wine is tasty as well. There are also outdoor tables near a fountain, which is a nice touch. However, the place lacks atmosphere.

We had a wonderful meal at Larau, the food was excellent and our waiter Bruno was an absolute delight. He took his time to explain the menu to us which we were so very grateful for! The menu itself is very thoughtful and executed very well! Our only regret was not returning to Larau for our second night in Estremoz!
Nicole S — Google review
We came for lunch based on all the great reviews. It was even better than we expected. We had no reservation but were warmly welcomed by the staff and seated right away. The bread was excellent. Two of us are vegetarian and they made us an absolutely delicious shitake mushroom risotto. The other two in our group had the seafood paella and were equally delighted with their food and said it was the best paella they have ever eaten. The passion fruit cheesecake was divine. We will absolutely be returning to this restaurant the next time we are in the area.

We are a fan of the traditional Portuguese cuisine. Larau has been able to uplift the dishes to an excellent mix of flavours and taste. Accompanied by an excellent local whine list and a nice atmosphere, we highly enjoyed our diner.
Bart E — Google review
A must go if you want to eat well. Be prepared to spend more than the average, but you will definitely not be disappointed. Larau is a cosy family restaurant, with an inviting atmosphere and excellent food. The waiters were very amicable and the food was served quickly. As an entrée we had the “peixinhos da horta” (fried green beans) in a tempura style, which were absolutely delicious and served with a savoury sauce. We then had the “arroz de lingueirão” (razor clam rice) which was exquisite, and the “arroz de rabo de boi” (oxtail rice) that was equally delectable, both as the main course. The deserts were simple yet very flavoursome. There is a vast offer in terms of wine, with several bottles showcased, and given that Estremoz is a city with several wine producers nearby, why not try some of the local produce? In terms of accessibility, the restaurant is at a ground floor and in a small residential road with little parking spaces, yet it is close to the centre and at a walking distance from a big parking lot near the church. The outdoor area is nice but probably too hot to have lunch on a warm day. Hopefully, another unexpected joy to be repeated.

It’s an interesting restaurant with the “ table cloth” of its introduction. The fish was well cooked and the vegetables were good too. The “ La garto” was also delicious. And the waiter are very attentive and welcoming. The only thing we didn’t feel very comfortable or get used to was the entrada. It wasn’t showed the price in the menu . So when we were served the entrada, we weren’t asked if we need it and later we were charged for it. They were something fried but cold , so the taste wasn’t that good. But the rest was perfect. And the quality price is high.

A Cadeia Quinhentista, located just behind the Santa Maria Church, offers a great selection of Alentejana cuisine. The restaurant is housed in a historic castle jail and provides a quaint and cozy atmosphere. The menu features local dishes such as Pezinhos de Coentrada and the famous dessert Sericaia. The restaurant also offers personalized rooms for guests in a requalified manor house in the center of Estremoz.
We just visited the bar. Sadly, dogs aren’t allowed on the roof terrace (maybe something to rethink if they behave better than their owners) but I took a glimpse and it was worth it. The bar is lovely inside and offers a great range of international and local drinks. Miroslav was a caring host and gave us all the attention we needed; not easy when you have someone who is truly fussy about this drinks ;) If you are looking for a cool drink in Estremoz - look no further and say ‘hi’ to Miro 😊

the space is quite peculiar, though not unpleasant, and the staff is very kind. the alentejo wines were excellent, but the food itself was nothing special. portions are huge, we could barely finish. the alheira fritters were tasty, the codfish was nice, but the other dishes were forgettable. overall, it’s an ok restaurant, especially for a place with so few options.

The restaurant is located in peculiar location (an old jail ) and there is a chill out in the terrace ( you can order cocktails from the chill out to take during the dinner ) . The food is quite good as well as the service. The unique point to improve os to have more workers in the kitchen to be a bit faster

A delicious dinner at the historic monument, what used to be the jail of estremoz in the 17th century. Situated near the castle, it has a rooftop bar on the 3rd floor with panoramic view of the town. Highly recommend its roasted lamb which after hours of preparation melt in your melt. Tasty, cooked perfectly. The golden codfish, mixed with potatoes is another must try dish. Julia was friendly and professional, helping us chose the right bottle to pair with the dishes. Chef Alice checked on us to make sure we are enjoying the food. The team truly cares about the customers’ experience. Thank you for a memorable night of indulgence.

The real taste of Portuguese food is what you will find in this restaurant. The food is all from the Alentejo region, the Chef behind the kitchen is one of the best I ever found. The restaurant is an old jail that was restaured, great decor. The food is the star of the show, but the extensive wine selection is something to brag about. For me one of the best restaurant in Estremoz, Portugal.

The food is worth every minute of waiting, that i can tell you, the quality was like in a star restaurant. Service was excellent and one of the guys speaks fluid portuguese, english, french and german. The ambiente fits perfekt to the castle, extraordinary. Best thing of the evening: The selfmade herbal liquor (yellow one), this alone was worth the visit.

Wonderful food in a unique location. This was our first visit to A Cadeia but it certainly won’t be our last! As vegetarians, my husband and I sometimes struggle to find tasty food when we eat out. Not so at A Cadeia. Julia was able to recommend dishes for us that were so tasty and each course was a delight. (Remember to leave room for dessert!!) The service was attentive without being intrusive. Inside the restaurant is tastefully decorated whilst still retaining some original features. It’s definitely worth a visit when you’re in Estremoz. We can highly recommend it and will definitely be paying this absolute gem of a restaurant another visit.

Tiago Cabaço Winery, located in Estremoz at the heart of the Alentejo wine region, is a family-owned establishment that embodies a deep-rooted passion for winemaking. Tiago Cabaço himself grew up immersed in the vineyards and cellar, learning the intricacies of grape varieties and the art of wine-growing from a young age. Established in 2004, this winery offers an unforgettable experience for visitors.
We had an amazing experience at this winery! The tour was incredibly interesting, and Maria did an excellent job explaining in English about the different types of wine, the production methods, and the processes the wine undergoes at the winery. The wine tasting was fantastic – we really enjoyed all the wines. On top of that, the view from the winery is absolutely stunning. Highly recommended!

This is a great tour by guides who truly love what they are doing. The guides take the time to answer your questions, and they did a great job explaining the process of making wine. Of course, sampling the wine was pretty good as well. Definitely recommend getting reservations. Lots of parking and easy to find. A special thanks to Madelina, our guide. She was very special. She loves people, and she loves her job. We felt like we had won the lottery when we met her.

What an amazing place to visit! Spectacular wines and so warm and pleasant introduction to Tiago Canaco wines by Maria, that once I left the winery, I was already thinking to come back ))) Maria elaborated every single detail of each wine, explained best pairings, history on the winery and their innovative approach. The wines are simply devine! Exeeded all my expectations! Been in 100+ wine yards in Italy, France, Spain, Moldova, Romania, US, New Zealand, South Africa, so more or less knew what to expect. Tried various wines and each was simply amazing in its own way. Bravo!!! Will be more than happy to pay a visit to Tiago Cabaco again and enjoy sweet presentation by Maria :))) P.S. attended the place on 4.11 (my birthday) and took 0411/1200 bottle of white - Blog 2023. Strange coincidence, however the wine is truly stunning 😍🍷

Nice wi ery. We were off-season and the only ones there for a tour and tasting. The host was wonderful explaining the brand, varietals and bottling. Wines were nice, varied. Situated across from scenic Estremoz with a large glass window the setting was wonderful. Wines are inexpensive to Americans and well crafted. I would advise the tour and/ or a few bottles to go.

His winery embodies both worlds: large-scale production that creates high-end, award-winning wines recognized globally, alongside accessible, affordable bottles crafted for the everyday tables of hardworking locals. Our tour, guided by Marianá, was a highlight of our trip. She shared not only the history of the vineyards, but also the personal journey of bringing wine from farm to table with care and dedication. The passion and authenticity of her storytelling deepened our appreciation for each glass. We left with the sense that Tiago’s wines are not only a product of the land, but also a reflection of family, innovation, and vision. We are excited to bring this experience home to Canada, sharing both the flavours and the story of Tiago Cabaço’s craft.

Our visit to Tiago Cabaço Winery in Estremoz was an unforgettable experience. Our guide, Madalena, was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate, walking us through the winemaking process with great detail. As newcomers to wine culture, we felt engaged and learned so much about the craft behind each bottle. The tour was very enriching, and the wine tasting itself was a highlight, with Madalena offering insightful tips on how to fully appreciate each wine. I highly recommend this experience for anyone visiting the region!

Amazing visit - beautiful Portuguese homemade vineyard . You should book a tasting / tour in advance . Takes about 1.5 hours if you take your time . We have visited a lot of wineries around the world but this is the first one we actually got to see the bottling process which was amazing . Wines are so delicious . Highly recommend this beautiful vineyard . Thank you for a great experience.

We had an amazing time here. Maria was a fantastic tour guide - very knowledgeable about the wine making process, and the notes on all the wine. She was also great fun! We ended up leaving with a few bottles as we just couldn’t resist.

João Portugal Ramos Wines is a renowned winery led by João Portugal Ramos, a prominent figure in Portuguese winemaking. Established in 1990, the family business is now run with the help of two of his children, Joao Maria and Filipa. The winery's high-quality wines reflect the distinct characteristics of the Estremoz terroir.
Great visit! We took the tasting/visit with tapas. It was a great experience. I highly recommend it.

NO walk in. Nobody was there and they wouldnt even serve a glass of wine. Very disappointing to see this pattern amongst many wineries in the region—won’t attend customers without appointment, blaming out on covid (it’s 2025.)

Our visit to João Portugal Ramos Winery in Estremoz was nothing short of unforgettable. Located in the Borba subregion of Alentejo, this is the home of one of Portugal’s most famous winemakers, and our experience there went far beyond a typical tasting. We arrived during harvest season and were warmly greeted by Marcia, a knowledgeable and friendly guide who explained the Ramos family’s history and estates across Portugal. Walking through the winery, we caught the distinct aroma of fermentation, visited the barrel room where classical music played to help “calm the wine,” and even glimpsed João and his son testing the must. Then came the highlight: harvest participation. Outfitted with white t-shirts and Panama hats, we rode into the vineyards in a work truck with Lucas, the head of harvest. Shears in hand, we picked Alicante Bouschet (a red-fleshed grape) and Trincadeira alongside seasoned workers who made us look slow by comparison. The vines showed signs of stress from the hot sun, but the setting—rows of vines overlooking a castle and valley—was incredible. Back at the winery, the adventure continued with traditional foot-trodding in the granite lagar. Wearing fisherman-style waders, we climbed in and learned the technique: knees high, marching in place to keep the skins submerged during fermentation. It was an amazing way to connect with a centuries-old winemaking tradition. After cleaning up, we sat down for a multi-course lunch prepared by the Ramos family’s private chef. Each dish was beautifully paired with the estate’s wines, and João’s wife, Ana, personally stopped by to greet us. The combination of hospitality, food, wine, and scenery made for an epic experience. If you want more than just a tasting—if you want to see, feel, and live the winemaking process—João Portugal Ramos Winery is a must-visit in Alentejo. Make reservations, you will not be disappointed. Highly recommend!

I did the wine tour and degustation lunch. It was a nice introduction to the wines. You could fall in love with the wines and send a whole box home. Beautiful vineyard and tour.

We booked a wine tasting for two. We had tasting of 4 wines which were all fabulous and the tasting included some olive pate, cheese and some crispy bread with oregano and olive oil all were fabulous components to have with the wine. We left with 2 cases. Highly recommend.

We were passing by while on holiday in the Alentejo Region. The staff are amazingly welcoming and friendly. Having been a few vineyards, the wines they have here are amazing. We ended up buying a few to take back home in the UK. Thank you very much for your amazing hospitality. We felt like we got VIP treatment, specially because we hadn’t booked or anything. Thanks again

We had an unforgettable experience at João Portugal Ramos Winery in Estremoz. From the peaceful setting to the incredible hospitality, everything was designed to help us unwind and enjoy the best of Alentejo. Our guide, Marcia, was outstanding—warm, knowledgeable, and wonderfully attentive. She answered every question with care and made the tasting both fun and educational without ever feeling rushed. The lunch was exceptional. The alheira starter was rich and flavorful, and the bacalhau à Vila Santa was easily one of our favorite dishes of the trip. Each course was paired with a standout wine, including the Quinta da Viçosa, the Duorum Reserva, and the Marquês de Borba Reserva—all added to the experience. And their Port wine? A perfect finish. This visit was a true highlight of our time in Portugal. If you’re anywhere near Estremoz, don’t miss this winery.

(Translated by Google) Total disappointment. I'd been wanting to visit the castle for a long time, and when I got there, I saw a closed castle overgrown with weeds. The worst part was that there were vegetable gardens and stalls with animals around. A sad view of a beautiful castle seen from afar. (Original) Desilusão total. Café Alentejano is a popular 60-year-old art deco-style cafe and restaurant located in Rossio. It offers substantial Portuguese fare and provides a great view of the square from its first-floor restaurant. The café also offers inexpensive accommodation upstairs. Known for its authentic Portuguese cuisine, it's a bustling spot during lunchtime, offering delicious dishes like wild boar stew and fresh French fries at an excellent value.
IMHO the best relation quality of food / price in the town of Estremoz. They won many cuisine contests. Very friendly and helpful staff

British tourist here. The wild boar stew (not a casserole, rather, a dryer dish) was, quite possibly, the best meat dish I have had in my life. I relished every bite. It’s also the most ethical and sustainable meat you can get in Portugal, so what’s not to love? (Service was also excellent - a single gentleman running the whole thing but very light on his feet!)

Tried visiting this restaurant for dinner on a Friday night around 8pm. There was no one in the dining room upstairs and the lady working there seemed annoyed that we had showed up. She did not greet us at all and brought over menus without a smile. We ended up walking out and went a few doors down to Alcerim and had a delicious meal there.

Mixed feelings, but i give the 4 star for the excellent wild boar stew and the fresh french fries. House wine was as well good. Could be a little bit more on top regarding hygiene

O Nicolau is not a fancy establishment, rather it is a cozy restaurant that serves tasty and authentic Portuguese cuisine. While it may not be worth going out of your way for, if you happen to be in the area, it's definitely worth checking out. The prices are also quite reasonable. On my first visit, I found the food to be delicious and the staff to be extremely helpful. I highly recommend trying their dishes as they are wonderfully prepared and reasonably priced.
This is a really cute, small village restaurant. The owner is preparing and serving the food himself. Unfortunately we only speak a tiny bit of Spanish and no Portuguese, so communication was based on hand waving and google translate. Still we got everything communicated. As everywhere in Portugal everyone is super nice to small kids, the same is the case here. The food was AMAZING. The meat was so soft, it fell apart on the fork. There are big city multi star restaurants that could learn a thing or two about how to prepare meat, especially game.

O Carlos is a charming restaurant that offers a variety of traditional dishes from the Alentejo region, including migas and asparagus omelette with fried potatoes and salad. The portions are described as massive, and the prices are considered very affordable for both local wine and the size of the plates. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, making it a perfect place to enjoy Portuguese traditional food with fresh wine and drinks.
Wonderful experience. We have ordered traditional Bacalau and pork mix. The poetion is big and very tasteful! Now I love bacaleau. You should try red house wine!

My partner enjoyed the migas and because I’m vegetarian, I was very happy they had an asparagus omelette option (doesn’t say this but it comes with fried potatoes and salad). Friendly and accessible despite being one of the region's top wineries. Our wine tasting was an absolute blast with the super friendly staff genuinely happy to share their knowledge and introduce us to the flavors and the process. While the winery features a variety of whites, roses, and reds at different price levels, there is also a selection of special blends from outstanding years and experimental wines which are a real treat. Owned by two brothers - an economist and an agrarian - Herdade Das Servas is an intellectually stimulating place to visit as well as a great way to spend an afternoon.
Kate S — Google review
Everything about this place is superb. The new driveway brings you past the front of the restaurant and cellar door which are set atop a rolling hill surrounded by the property's vineyards and gardens. We dined Al fresco (July) on a hot but dry day with a cool breeze. The service was prompt and friendly. We had a child whose meal was served very quickly which kept him calm and preoccupied. We ordered a red and white suggested by our waiter which were wines of finesse and structure. The majority of us had red meat dishes, all of which surpassed our expectations. Perfectly cooked, with great textures and flavours, the red complimented our meals beautifully and delivered a culinary masterpiece. A walk inside the restaurant presented a luxurious and very contemporary dining room which appears to be recently renovated yet maintains the old world charm of a venue and property established in 1687. The cellar door is a well lit space designed to cater for enough curious wine enthusiasts and still have a very intimate discussion with the well versed staff about the history, the varieties, and philosophy of the families winemaking. And yet, despite all this, it is the wines that truly shine here, (on par with the staff) leaving an indelible memory of what Portuguese wines are all about. I'd give everything a 10 if I could and it would be insufficient to truly honour this place and it's people
