Castles
Nestled along the scenic bend of the River Eske, Donegal Castle is a stunning historical landmark that showcases Ireland's rich heritage. Originally constructed in the 15th century by the powerful O'Donnell clan, this impressive fortress has undergone significant transformations over the years. Sir Basil Brooke rebuilt it in 1623, adding a striking Jacobean house nearby.
This is a beautiful castle to go visit. It’s right in the middle of town. Parts of it have been restored, on the inside there are some finished rooms and a large grand Hall. There is lots of information to see here about the history of this castle. You can take a tour or walk about freely. There is a large grass courtyard. There is no free parking. You must park in the parking lot by the river.
Don L — Google review
This is a really great historical landmark right next to the Diamond, the town center with lots of great shopping and eating. The fee is very small and the tour takes about 20 minutes (more if you linger). The staff is very friendly, and the facilities are very clean. This was one of our favorite landmarks, as it had a sf guided tour with lots of great historical information, and some rooms were staged to replicate original conditions. It was a lot of fun and really interesting.
Jason V — Google review
Worth a visit. Entrance fee €5. The castle does not have parking. You can park in the city for €0.30-€0.50 per hour. The castle is well preserved, worth a visit.
Zilvinas A — Google review
I was hoping you'd get to go into the outer corners; they have access but there's no way to enter (doorways suspended in the air). Nice little castle otherwise. The woodwork was a plus! They did a good job repairing. Took 30-45 minutes to explore. Parking was kinda hard to find. Sept 11, 2024.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Donegal Castle — 10/10, would “mind our heads” again. As two women who barely clear five feet, we’ve never once been accused of being too tall for anything. But apparently, medieval architecture had other plans. Between ducking through doorways, climbing spiral stairs that could double as a quad workout, and pretending we owned the place for 0.2 seconds, Donegal Castle gave us everything we didn’t know we needed. Highly recommend — just bring good shoes, a sense of humor, and maybe a helmet for the tall folks. 🏰😂

Intact castle with 4 floors open to the public. Beautiful castle , located right in town. We enjoyed our visit, worth your time.
Elle S — Google review
Used the OPW card to gain free admission. Surprised a castle employee when the card was presented....she was rather smart-aleck and then saw the card and knew she had to now do some actual work besides sitting there and taking people's money. The castle is small but quaint and realistic. The 2d and 3rd floors are awesome.

Great day and wonderful castle! Employees were wonderful! Very thoughtful for parents in their 90’s. Time there was terrific and you need to try our tree seat!

Olde Castle Seafood Bar is a charming pub that has been serving food and drink since the 1700s. The establishment offers unfussy pub grub and locally-sourced fish and seafood in an upstairs dining room. The beautiful old building exudes hospitality, making it a gem for visitors. In addition to exceptional seafood, the Irish Beef served here is described as unforgettable, making it a must-try for patrons.
Lovely atmosphere at the Olde Castle Bar. A bit of a wait for a table at peak dinner time but we were happy to grab some ginger beer (with bitters and lemon per the barkeeper’s recommendation) and sit in the cosy bar area. Excellent seafood and a mean lamb stew as well.

The food was absolutely amazing! I had the superfood salad, which was fresh, colourful, and full of flavour. Courgettes were a little on the dry side, but the salsa chickpeas completely made up for it. My meat-eating friends were thrilled with the lobster (priced at €48) and said it was worth every cent. We finished with the Summer Berry Tart, which was just as delightful. Crisp pastry, sweet-tart berries, and the perfect amount of cream. Highly recommend!
Witty N — Google review
We went here twice with large groups (no reservation) & they were VERY accommodating. The shrimp skewers are amazing. Others also raved about the Venison pie & lamb stew & pasta dishes. They were very friendly didn't get rattled if someone changed their mind on something. Great place!

We were lucky to get a tight corner table on a Saturday afternoon. Food & service were great. Gluten free beer available- and very good! Also love the Kinnegar beer - and their marketing vibe is really fun. See the poster! Enjoy!! Even if your table is a tad uncomfortable 🍻😂

Stopped in for lunch. Seafood chowder was very good, definitely a 10 out of 10. The pork sandwich was just average. Wouldn’t recommend ordering extra chips — €6 per portion and they tasted over-fried in old oil. Service was fast with drinks and decent with food. Atmosphere was nice and relaxed, no loud music, even though the place was busy. Overall, a solid 4 out of 5. Would go back for the seafood chowder alone. Definitely recommend that.
Marina — Google review
Even though the restaurant is quite large, it fills up quickly. As soon as we were seated, a line started forming at the door. Feels like one of those spots all the tourists go to. With so many people, the service was pretty much absent. I tried the burger and the seafood linguine. The burger was a tad salty and the linguine was lacking in flavor. Maybe we came at a bad time.
Tony Y — Google review
Terrific lunch experience here. One of their specials was a beef and mushroom Guinness pie. It was fantastically done. The location itself is very neat and gives that authentic pub vibe. Service was great too!
Ryan B — Google review
We ordered steak, seafood chowder, seafood platter, 4.5 Guinness, lemon meringue and 2 Irish coffee for around €150. Fantastic value for money given the cosy venue and food was genuinely delicious. Definitely worth a visit as part of your trip to Donegal Town!

Restaurant
The Blueberry Tea Room and Restaurant is a charming dining spot located in Donegal Town, Ireland. Situated near the iconic Donegal Castle, this restaurant offers a delightful culinary experience. With its cozy ambiance and delectable menu, it's a must-visit for both locals and tourists exploring the area. The establishment is part of the vibrant food scene in Donegal, showcasing the region's culinary offerings through its dishes.
It is a nice small cafe right at the heart of the Donegal town. The place is great for their breakfast and meals. Also look out for their specials as well for the day which are mentioned on the board beside the counter. We had ordered their freshly house made scones and french toast, cappuccino and flat white for us. They not only have lovely breakfast on their menu but also have great scone of different flavour to die for. The scones were served with fresh cream, jam and butter. The ambience is great with fabulous decor on the walls. The food was good fancy and nicely presented. The breakfast was definitely fulfilling in quantity. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. They also have a good outdoor sitting if the weather is good and bright. I will personally love to visit again whenever I am in town next time, until then I will recommend this cafe to my near and dear ones.

Darling little restaurant with generous, well appointed plates. The smash burgers were heavenly. Unfortunately, the dessert we wanted was sold out so clearly the homemade treats are also scrumptious. The prices are very reasonable as well.
Feisty G — Google review
I wish I lived here so I could go here all the time. We ended up eating here on 3 separate occasions. Once for breakfast, once for lunch and finally once for snack. The place is packed, but they magically always seem to have a table. Great waitresses, so accomodating and in great spirits. It was great for a fry up breakfast. Lunch was incredible with their panini and their soup of the day with homemade bread hit the spot! Our snack was tea/coffee and sweet treats. I recommend the plum & apple crumble and the chocolate sponge. Just adore this place!
Sally S — Google review
Adorable little place for a breakfast that is better than homemade. Scones, jam, and butter were so tasty. The portions were large. The full Donegal bfast included more than enough for any large appetite. Wait staff were working hard to keep everything moving like clockwork. The manager was great comic relief. Highly recommend.

Lovely decor, so happy that my poached eggs came with soda bread! Our waiter Brian was very nice to us and kind to families with children. Pleased to see even a sweet treat on offer that was both gluten free & dairy free!

The porridge was fantastic and topped with fresh fruit. I loved that they even offered soy milk as an alternative. The cream and honey were served on the side, so you could add exactly as much as you wanted.

Don't walk, run to this delightful little Cafe. My husband loved his seafood chowder. I ate the best scone I had in all of Ireland, and I had quite a few! Don't skip out on the delicious fresh made jam and clotted cream with it. The staff were all very friendly.

The Reel Inn is a renowned pub in Donegal Town, known for its traditional Irish music offered every night. It has both indoor and outdoor seating with a view of the river, and a cozy front bar with a coal fire. The pub is famous for its lively atmosphere and is considered one of Ireland's best pubs for traditional music. Visitors can also enjoy other nearby bars such as Olde Castle Seafood Bar and McCafferty's Bar, each offering their own unique charm and experiences.
Came here for a traditional pub with music and very pleased we chose The Reel Inn. The Guinness is great, the service at the bar excellent and the traditional music added to the great atmosphere.

A top night of our two weeks in Ireland at The Reel Inn. Thanks to the hilarious and accommodating staff there.. my sister got her Guinness pouring certificate, they moved a table so we could be next to the fire and put up with our shenanigans and requests for another round. Cheers to you guys and hope to be back one day!
Sage W — Google review
We were recommended this place for traditional music but I was disappointed. It seems to be more of a tourist music gig than a real traditional session. I'm sure most people will love it but for me the microphones and amps distort the music and I don't enjoy it. It's mainly a blokes playing a guitar and accordion singing traditional songs, no pipes and not even a fiddle the night we went!
David L — Google review
Maybe the best pub in Donegal town. Great pints, great music. Definitely worth a visit!

Amazing local pub in Donegal, Ireland. Friendly atmosphere and a mix of locals and some tourist. Mostly, locals.
Jeanne W — Google review
Wow! This pub was so good that we stayed an extra day in Donegal to come back again. The first night was absolutely brilliant. Two different (and really good) live acts, really friendly people, and a brilliant atmosphere with lots of singing, dancing, cheers, etc. Because the second band was so good, we decided to stay another night and see them play on the Monday night. The man working that night was really lovely, helpful, friendly and informative about the area. I thought the first night couldn't be topped, but it definitely was. One person described it as the best night of her life. How the woman on the bar coped, I have no idea, but she did, and kept the drinks coming while genuinely smiling and working through it all. A phenomenal place. Must visit.

Amazing waterbus trip in Donegal. They were so kind to reschedule our tickets when we needed. Great and nice ride with family and kids. Very good music for kids and adults, nice food. We were able to see some seals. Has toilets, friendly for wheelchair and pram.

This was such good fun. Excellent value at €22 each. 1 hr 15 mins of total entertainment. A slight delay in setting off due to waiting for the tide/water to be high enough. Seals (as promised), beautiful shorelines, ongoing commentary - some pretty corny jokes !! Great sing-a-long on the return trip. Lots of seating outside - gorgeous sunshine for us. Very comfortable area inside. Brilliant bar service. Toilets etc. Really enjoyable experience. Parking is onsite next to the boat at 30c an hour.

We went on Saturday morning after a wedding and this could not have been a more perfect start to the day after a late night. The staff are so warm. There were about 25-30 of us, but they made a point to speak with us all & make a real connection. The landscape was so picturesque. No seals 😔but when the songs started it was soon forgotten. I actually teared up when they played "Tell me Ma" remembering my Mother who passed and loved Ireland & that song. I highly recommend this joyous, friendly experience that will make you love this place even more! 💚

Restaurant
La Bella Donna Restaurant is a family-run establishment in the heart of Donegal Town, widely regarded as one of the best dining spots in County Donegal. It offers Italian cuisine and is known for its warm atmosphere and delicious food. The restaurant has received accolades for its excellent service and wine experience. With its prime location on the River Eske, it's a popular choice among locals and tourists alike.
Such a wonderful place to visit, so much we came back twice. My wife and I were in Donegal for two nights and got dinner the first night where we met Ann (the owner) who served us a wonderful Italian meal. Having gluten free pasta for my wife was a huge highlight and such a treat especially when traveling. After dinner the first night Ann offered us some wonderful suggestions for areas to visit while we were in town. The second night we came back after visiting a local pub for some Irish music and grabbed dessert. Again we saw Ann who remembered us and we stayed probably for half an hour talking to her about the history of the restaurant, what we have left in our trip and overall just great conversation. We both would HIGHLY recommend coming to visit La Bella Donna for your gluten free items and dessert of course!

Great food, good atmosphere. If nitpicking risotto was a bit undercooked and there was some dust on the divider. However all and all will be back

Went to La Bella Donna for dinner and really enjoyed it. I had the Pollo Diavolo which was full of flavour and had just the right kick, while my wife had a pizza that was fresh and delicious. The staff were really patient and accommodating with our little ones, which we really appreciated. Great food and a relaxed atmosphere – we’ll definitely be back.

Lovely atmosphere, delicious pizza, my husband was OBSESSED with the carbonara pasta. The slow gin fizz and mai tai were also delicious. Highly recommend the lemon tart! So yummy! Staff were super friendly and pleasant and checked in on us frequently which we really appreciated.
Riley W — Google review
The food at La Bella Donna was excellent, and our waitress was really great. We expected a bit of a wait since the menu mentioned that everything is made fresh, but we ended up waiting over an hour for our food. A couple of tables seated around the same time had already finished and left before we were served. That said, our server was very apologetic and kept checking in with updates, which we really appreciated. The only other downside to the experience was the woman who seemed to be the host or manager. She was not pleasant to interact with and came across as quite rude.
Megan D — Google review
My sister Melissa and I dined there tonight. We are visiting Donegal for a few days from the US so based on positive reviews we called and made a reservation for 5pm which is opening time. We were not disappointed. I wish I knew our server’s name. She was lovely and very attentive. We had the bruschetta which was one of the best we’d ever eaten and each had a Caesar salad for our entree. Absolutely delicious and the portions were great. We even had dessert—my sister had the gelato trio and I had the Tiramisu which I found out is made in house. So delicious I ate every bit of it. Would definitely recommend and eat there again .

The Reveller Bar is a popular live music venue which features great bands on Saturday and Sunday. The summer months see live music from Tuesday through to Sundays.
This is a very friendly pub with a great location, the first one I saw while coming off the bus. The service was fast and friendly, with Guinness at €5 a pint. There was a mix of young and old and they were all great. Definitely worth a visit

This little bar added to such a unique experience to this area of Ireland. The room was just renovated with a clean modern bathroom. You could not hear any noise from the bar below. The bartender was a lovely young lady who obviously loved her job there. Thank you so much for a great experience.

A very decent & by Irish standards reasonably priced place to stay. Spotless, spacious bedroom + superb modern shower room. Couldn’t be more central in Donegal Town. Large car park a short walk away costing (if memory serves) a little over €1 for 24 hours with no restrictions on length of stay. I’m knocking off a star because there’s no breakfast option & the experience overall was rather impersonal. The steep, narrow stairs up to rooms might be challenging to the aged or infirm, as might the uphill walk from Car Park #4 with suitcases.

I stayed in a room upstairs, it was very clean, large, practically brand new and felt very homey. The staff were very welcoming. Not at all noisy considering above a pub but tbf I was there midweek. Fantastic location as well. Note the rooms are up two floors, no lift. The pub downstairs is cosy and has a lovely beer garden. Highly recommend this place!

Day 2

South side of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the south side side of town. Start the day off with Lough Eske Castle, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Blas. All together, your day would be filled with about 7 hours of non-stop fun.

Nestled on the picturesque shores of Lough Eske, Lough Eske Castle is a stunning 15th-century castle that has been elegantly restored into a luxurious hotel. This enchanting destination combines the charm of Irish hospitality with five-star opulence, making it perfect for a regal getaway. With its proximity to Donegal Town and the breathtaking Slieve League cliffs, guests can easily explore the natural beauty surrounding them.
I had the best experience at Lough Eske Castle Hotel during our one-week road trip around Ireland exploring castles. The views are absolutely stunning, our room was beautiful, and the food was excellent. We were kindly upgraded to the Donegal Suite, which made the stay even more special. We also had the Relax and Recharge Spa treatment — and it was beyond good, such a perfect way to unwind. For dinner, we went to the Gallery Bar — the Apple Virgin Mojito mocktail was refreshing, and the Sirloin steak was delicious. Special thanks to Concierge Shae (Hope i spelled it right) , who was so welcoming and made us feel right at home. Overall, an unforgettable stay and one of the highlights of our castle road trip in Ireland — highly recommend!

Wow, this is a special place! The grounds and castle are stunning in every regard. The room was gigantic and all of the staff were delightful and very welcoming. We went on the half hour horse and cart with Theresa the horse, and highly recommend doing so. It’s incredibly scenic and calming, traversing through the beautiful forest listening to hoofs clip-clopping. Dinner at the restaurant and breakfast the next morning were both excellent, and cocktails at the bar were scrumptious - get the bramble! There is a spa on site as well, and option to book outdoor jacuzzi’s in the gardens. We were very sad to leave such a magical place.

a 5 star experience, highly recommend this place. beautiful grounds, amazing room and amazing staff. it is a trek to get here, but we well worth it. definitely recommend the suite rooms for the extra space. the bar has amazing food. shout out to the bar manager who was amazing and looked after us.

Beautiful location and building. Friendly and helpful staff. Breakfast options are top class. The options of fine dining and pub food are great to have. Food was very good. Less than 10 mins from Donegal town if you want night life. I Highly recommend visiting Lough Eske Castle
Stephen M — Google review
We stayed for two nights with workmates (4 adults) in a connecting family room with a dinner package. Unfortunately, our experience was quite disappointing. On the first night, we had dinner in the bar, and the service was very poor. The staff seemed disorganized — our order was wrong, and one of the meals was completely forgotten. My friend had to wait around 30 minutes for her pizza after the rest of us had already finished eating. The next morning at breakfast, another friend ordered from the menu, but her meal never arrived. She ended up having just two slices of toast instead. On our last night, we went to see a show in town and ordered room service before we left. Reception informed us that the last order was at 9:00 pm, so we asked for the food to be delivered to our room at that time. When we returned around 9:30 pm, there was no food. After checking with reception, we were told that they had forgotten to place the order. We didn’t receive our food until around 10:30 pm. For a five-star hotel, and considering the price we paid, this was extremely disappointing. I chose this hotel expecting a relaxing stay, but instead had to deal with repeated service issues — the last thing I needed.
Fiona F — Google review
This place is incredible. The rooms are bigger than most apartments I've lived in. Extremely comfortable and spacious. The interior is bedecked in wonderful art, and the nature and sculpture of the grounds are an attraction all by themselves. The food is quite good and available at very flexible times. Which is good, because the it is a bit of a hike to get to another place to eat. This is definitely a rural retreat, so maybe not the best choice for exploring the city. Donegal isn't too far away, though. But there are plenty of reasons to stay in or near the castle. The on site spa is incredible, offering massages, a pool, and thermal suite. The woods around the castle are gorgeous, and have many scenic trails. The only thing I wish the castle had is a map of the property. As you might expect of a castle, it's VAST, and easy to get lost. There are many short cuts, but you kind of have to find them on your own.

Amazing place! Cannot recommend enough! Very relaxing and peaceful, it was an amazing week-end for us. The staff was very nice and helpful, the food was very good, we had great cocktails at the bar. Super experience and will definitely come back.

This was a wonderful experience to stay here! Gorgeous rooms, warm and welcoming staff and stellar service at every level. The rooms are well appointed and the shower was lovely. Our meals in the restaurant were exceptional. The breakfast buffet was generally good.

Specialty Museums
The Donegal Railway Heritage Museum is a delightful destination for anyone interested in the rich history of rail travel in Ireland. Nestled within the historic Donegal Town Railway Station, which dates back to 1889, this charming museum showcases an impressive collection of artifacts and memorabilia from the county's narrow gauge railway system. Visitors can explore vintage photographs, original oil paintings, tickets, and posters that tell the story of how trains played a crucial role in shaping local business and trade.
First of all there is no parking directly outside the museum but on the opposite side of the roundabout there is some street parking (Pay to Park Mon- Sat) and just past the museum there is the St John Boscoe centre were you can park for free. On entering the museum which is the old station building you are met by very friendly and helpful staff. There are a couple of rooms to look around and in one a short film about the line, very interesting as it captures things that are no longer around. There is a carriage outside that has some useful info and a children interaction area. Overall a lovely place to visit and made better because I could bring my dog.

Absolute must-visit for all railway enthusiasts! Incredible experience, fascinating details, and unforgettable atmosphere. Thank you so much for hosting us on Tuesday, April 29 — we loved every moment! — Belturbet Heritage Railway Museum team

Brilliant experience with entertaining and informative staff/guides. Was worried our 11 year old would find it boring but she was engaged and found the interactive parts amusing and fun. Can't fault it, highly recommend.

We had a wonderful visit learning about the history of the Donegal railway. We were impressed by the multimedia aspect, including some original film footage from the 50s. We had a nice chat with Stephen who answered our questions and sent us on our way!

Genuinely fantastic way to spend an hour or so in Donegal town. All of the staff are extremely knowledgeable and friendly, the video and displays on the wall all add to the feel. The interactive cart would be a big hit with kids, it was a big hit with us in our mid 20's!

Absolutely brilliant museum for train fanatics, the staff go above and beyond with accommodating for all ages, we went with our 2 year old and the staff couldn’t have been any better with him. Definetly recommend this museum it’s worth a visit.

Very enjoyable. Lots of stuff for kids and lots of information for adults. Well worth the price of admission. Just a short walk from Donegal Castle. Cafe right outside. Park a minute's walk away. The staff are very friendly and helpful.

People who are aiming to keep history alive, always a plus in my books. This is a brilliant yet sad example as to how Irelands railway use to flourish, while showing how crippled the nations transport system has become. Do not compare this museum with the same capacity that other heritage railways have to work with, its unique in its own way. Go and support the further restoration of the station and its past. I have more photos, but go see it for yourself. 😊

Pub
The Forge is a traditional Irish pub located in Donegal, known for hosting live music on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. It's considered a hidden gem with friendly staff and a cozy atmosphere complete with a hearth. The pub is said to be the oldest in the area and was once part of a building that included a forge. Visitors praise the quality of Guinness served at The Forge, making it an ideal spot for enjoying a pint on Fridays.
Class pints of Guinness. Great atmosphere and friendly bar man. Open mic night on Thursday as well!
Jessica H — Google review
Came here for a couple of drinks - well priced and fabulous atmosphere with little nooks and spots to talk.
Steve B — Google review
Visited because I had a recommendation that the Guinness was the best in town. It was a busy Saturday night and there was one member of staff serving - they were doing their very best to serve everyone promptly and efficiently. A new bar person joined eventually, but their attitude was kind of rude, in my opinion. I was trying to catch their eye to order a drink, instead of shouting for their attention (in the front bar), but they went to great pains to avoid my gaze, looking anywhere but at me, waiting for a pint of Guinness to settle...I found this quite strange behaviour. We upped and left - there are other more central pubs that are much friendlier. 5 star service from the over-worked bar person. 1 star because the other bar person had some sort of chip on their shoulder.

BLAS in Donegal Town is a popular restaurant known for its delicious and competitively priced food. The place offers vegan options and has received positive reviews for its friendly service. Located on Killybegs Rd, it is one of the best places to taste vegan cuisine in Donegal Town. The restaurant's Gaelic glory adds to the overall experience, making it a must-visit spot when exploring County Donegal.
Spent a couple mornings getting breakfast here, everything was delicious! Well-cooked with a few vegetarian options. Great filter coffee available as well. The restaurant has plenty of seating while still maintaining a cozy atmosphere, and the staff are warm and friendly! There is also plenty of parking outside for Blas customers.

Kind staff. Food doesn’t seem that fresh 🥹 ; soup & fish were not really good ; smoothie was not home made neither. We didnt stay for the desserts so 😬🫣! But nice location and welcoming staff

Blas is an absolute gem in Donegal Town 🌿 — a place where warm hospitality meets exceptional food. The setting is cosy yet stylish, with a lovely balance of modern touches and rustic charm that makes you want to linger. The staff are genuinely welcoming and attentive. You can tell they care about both the food and the people they serve. On my visit, I had the breaded chicken fillet burger 🍔 — perfectly crispy on the outside, juicy and tender chicken fillet , served in a fresh bun with vibrant, well-seasoned chips and side salad. For dessert, I went for the marbled red velvet brownie 🍫🍰, which was rich, indulgent, and beautifully presented — the kind of sweet treat you remember long after the last bite. The relaxed atmosphere make Blas a must-visit. Whether you’re stopping in for breakfast, lunch, or just coffee and cake ☕, you’ll leave feeling well-fed and well-looked-after. Highly recommended for locals and visitors alike 🌟. I would recommend to pre book the slot for lunch or breakfast even on the weekdays as they are absolutely favorites for the locals. It also has ample of parking and is wheelchair accessible as well

Lovely spot for breakfast. We stayed at the Gateway Lodge and had a fantastic set menu for great value at Blas. Yogurt, tea/coffee, juice, and a large selection of hot breakfasts to choose from.. The French toast really is fantastic!! Great service and so many wonderful Christmas decorations when we went.

We had such a lovely breakfast here today! Donna was so welcoming and even gave us some recommendations for breakfast. The Blas platter is a great idea if you want to try out 2 dishes but aren’t sure which to get and can even have a mixture of savoury and sweet. 🥞🍳
Ciara F — Google review
Cute spot for brunch with nice menu options. Note that it only opens at 10am to the public. My friends couldn’t decide what to get so got the half savoury half sweet option which was a good compromise. There was a slight problem with my omelette, but when I notified the staff they fully nulled the cost of it. I will say I didn’t feel like we got the warmest welcome, but again once I mentioned the issue with my meal they were very apologetic which I appreciated.
Abigail S — Google review
We came in as a group of seven for breakfast, even though we weren’t hotel guests, and the staff warmly welcomed us and quickly found us a lovely table. Our waitress was incredibly attentive. Not only did she take our orders efficiently, but she also remembered that I had asked for soya milk in my drink and thoughtfully checked if I’d like my porridge made the same way (which I had completely forgotten to mention). The food was outstanding, and everyone at the table left happy. Most of the portions (especially the porridge, Greek yoghurt, and pancakes) were very generous, while the avocado crush and pan boxty were more standard in size. I highly recommend the matcha latte and the porridge with fresh berries and honey, both were delicious! 🫶🏻🫶🏻

Nestled just a short stroll from the bustling heart of Donegal Town, The Gateway Lodge offers a delightful blend of comfort and charm. This family-run guesthouse combines the best aspects of hotel amenities with the personal touch typical of a cozy B&B. Guests can unwind in down-to-earth rooms, some adorned with elegant chandeliers, creating an inviting atmosphere. One highlight is Blas, the on-site restaurant renowned for its award-winning breakfasts that cater to all tastes.
My partner and I recently stayed at The Gateway Lodge while attending a wedding at Harveys Point, and we were absolutely delighted with our experience. The location was ideal, just a short and easy 10-minute drive to the hotel. From the moment we arrived and were able to check in early, the staff were incredibly welcoming and went above and beyond to ensure we had everything we needed. We had booked three rooms in total, and the price was fantastic – the best we found in the area. Our room was spotless, comfortable, and absolutely perfect for our needs. We couldn't have asked for a better base for our wedding weekend. Highly recommend The Gateway Lodge!

We loved our very brief one-night! We stayed at the Lodge in early April. My favorite part: we could walk to town… and we did. For dinner AND THEN… early the next morning we walked in to town & enjoyed a magical walk along the Bank Walk (also known as the Fairy Bank) ✨ do it - you will love it! - it was one of the most charming, unexpected finds on our trip to Ireland. The staff friendly & helpful. The lodge - quaintly laid out with rooms tucked up and around one another w/plenty of space to lay out your suitcases. The next morning, we enjoyed a lovely Irish breakfast at the lodge’s restaurant.

Great hotel! Rooms were clean and seemed to have been updated recently. The breakfast was amazing and really well presented (see photos). Location was an easy 5 minute walk to restaurants and bars / center of town. Would stay here again.

Staff at the Gateway was wonderful and friendly, and breakfast was excellent. Our room was good, with a nice comfy bed, but it was warm. We had to open the window, and in doing so were woken up by the lads coming home around 2am. We also heard a couple getting freaky in the next room, so not the quietest sleep. Overall, a very decent stay!

Had the best experience with them. The staff was really nice and warm. The girls on reception just make you feel comfortable with their chats and good suggestions about places to visit. The manager is pretty chill and friendly guy as well. We stayed there for 2 days and were to check out on the day of storm ewoyn but the staff told us to stay longer that day without any additional charges given the weather. It's not common these days even though we didn't ask for it. They're genuinely gem of people. ✨✨

Popped in here for pizza. We just drove from Westport to Donegal and were famished. Our pizza came really quick. Service was excellent. I only wish there was more basil on my pizza.

Located in a fantastic area right in the town centre, when we arrived we sat in the bar part of the premises, the front bar was warm when the back part where we sat was very cold with no heating on, staff was very friendly showed us to our room. Rooms where in a good condition for the price, the carpet was stained, and there was some floaters in the kettle. The heating in the room was extremely hot this left me unable to sleep, when we return to the room and I noticed the radiators were blasting I turned all off, also my partner burnt his hands on the water as it was extremely hot very quickly. Overall it was an ok spot for the price

Harvey's Point

Hotel

Nestled on the shores of Lough Eske and surrounded by the stunning Blue Stack Mountains, Harvey's Point in Donegal Town, Ireland has garnered numerous accolades. This luxurious hotel was named Ireland's Hotel of the Year 2017 and boasts posh suites with picturesque lake or mountain views. The on-site restaurant has been recognized as the Best Hotel Restaurant in Ulster, offering a delectable four-course Table d'Hote dinner menu.
This resort has exceptionally large rooms (especially by European standards), friendly and accommodating staff, and a reasonable range of amenities on site; the restaurant is noteworthy for not relying on a captive audience, and the bar is equipped with a wide variety of spirits and friendly, charming bartenders. It's perfect as luxurious home base for car-equipped adventurers, or as a quiet getaway for those who prefer a serene retreat.
Tony S — Google review
Attended a wedding at the hotel. Ceremony and reception. The location is really nice on the banks of the lake. Weather allowed for the ceremony to be outside. The hotel rooms were huge and of a very high quality. Food was exceptional wedding related and food eaten at other times. Staff were really nice and helpful. By far the best hotel stayed in, in some time.

We've been going to Castle Lough Eske for a few years now and knew about Harveys Point, but just never been. Mostly because they don't have a Spa - my wife's requirement for a 'good' hotel. BUT. This was a super stay. They had weddings on 3 days in a row and it never spilled over into the hotel. The round bar is amazing and the view across the lake from the dining room is absolutely gorgeous. AND they have a fabulous little 'mindful walk' in the forest on the lake edge. Absolutely relaxing and peaceful. The service was excellent and the breakfast was full on - must admit I totally stuffed my face... The staff seem to have been there for ages. The mark of a place where even the staff are happy to be there. I'm absolutely going back again.

Simply Outstanding! Our stay at Harvey’s Point was absolutely perfect from start to finish. The location by Lough Eske is stunning — peaceful, scenic, and truly relaxing. The rooms are huge, luxurious, and beautifully designed, with every comfort you could imagine. The staff were exceptional — warm, genuine, and always going the extra mile to make us feel at home. Dinner in the restaurant was superb, with excellent food and top-class service. Breakfast was also a highlight — delicious, fresh, and served with a smile. Harvey’s Point has that rare mix of elegance and genuine Irish hospitality. It’s one of the best hotels we’ve ever stayed in, and we can’t wait to return. Highly recommended!

Great hotel in a very picturesque location which arguably should be a 5 star. Food is excellent and staff are friendly and helpful. Rooms are fantastic. Downsides are location and the price of accommodation. Location great if only staying there, not so much if plan is to head to Donegal Town.

A group of six friends travelled to Harvey's Point for two nights to celebrate a birthday. Amazing hotel and every person you meet in Harvey's Point were exceptional and so friendly. Our room was stunning, and food was delicious, our meal on Saturday evening was exceptional and to the highest standard. From the moment of booking with Anne Marie, to the wonderful Bar staff, including Amy, to the wonderful breakfast team, Linda and all the team, to the wonderful dinner team, everyone exceeded our expectations. A special mention for Geraldine who looked after our group so well on Saturday evening. A very big thank you for making our trip so memorable and fun.

A hidden gem with scenic lakeside and hillside views from luxurious bedrooms. We happened to go there on one of its midweek cabaret and dinner nights. Amazed at the full house which is obvious a well kept secret!! It was great , gorgeous food and great talent ( thoroughly enjoyed the uniques of this event). The greatest treasure at Harvey’s point are the staff, multicultural and local , all well polished in what they do. Highly recommend for lovers of walking, and being in nature.
