Horta in 4 days

If you only have 4 days to spend in Horta, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Horta, on Faial Island in the Azores, is a classic stopover for Atlantic sailors, known for its colorful marina murals and historic Peter Café Sport. The town offers striking views across the channel to Pico Island and its dominant volcano, especially at sunset along the waterfront. On Faial itself, you can visit the vast Caldeira crater, walk the ash-covered landscape of the Capelinhos volcano, and follow coastal trails lined with seasonal hydrangeas. The area is also a base for whale- and dolphin-watching tours in the surrounding Atlantic waters.
With favorites like Monte Queimado, Ah! Boca Santa, and Miradouro Mirante, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Ah! Boca Santa and Jin Li Lai Chinese Restaurant so you can get the best taste of Horta while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Bar
Cafe
Peter Café Sport is a legendary bar that has been welcoming international yachtsmen since 1918. It has gained global popularity for its special atmosphere, making it a must-visit spot in Horta. The bar offers the right ambiance for socializing and enjoying drinks or snacks, attracting regular tourists as well. Its reputation is further enhanced by the strategic position of Horta and its marina, which makes it an essential port of call for those crossing the Atlantic.
Iconic place to eat. Very delicious meals, good cocktails and great desserts. We had the cheese plate with olives, garlic bread, tuna steaks, the famous chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream and some apple pie. Also a coffee and two cocktails. Everything tasted really good, you should definitely give it a try. Service is not too fast and sometimes looks a bit lost.
AeroFlax — Google review
Famous Peter's Sports bar where you can have a drink or proper lunch. Has outdoor seating area overlooking the marina. Had beetroot humus salad with is a local take on blending beetroot with chickpeas where you get about 150 grams of beets pulsed with chickpeas. Bit watery and lacks humus texture. Rating 5 out of 10. Hamburger was good with rating 7 out of 10. Simple salad was with fresh veggies (iceberg, tomatoes, cucumber and pickled onions). Rating 7 out of 10. Great coffee. Octopus was good with rating 8 out of 10. Falafel was a good portion of 4 pieces and was decently done with my rating of 7 out of 10. Overall bill was 75 Euro.

I will not talk about all food (honestly some I dont like), but the fish soup and coconut pudding are the best 🫶😭 I will miss. P.S. Good music inside. Would be nice to add local wine by glasses.
Olga T — Google review
Excellent food and friendly service. They serve food all day long. The octopus stew was so tender and tasty! Their gin tonic is a must try too!
Estelle T — Google review
A very cool spot where you can really feel the history around you. It’s laid-back and low key, with a local G&T you definitely shouldn’t miss—plus it’s super affordable. And the chocolate cake? Absolutely delicious—I’d love to get the recipe!
Arthur B — Google review
Well packed and touristy which affected the service, very bish, bash, bosh, see ya later alligator. However, the place looks great and the atmosphere was buzzing. The food, good. They accept cards.
Pedro S — Google review
Best place on the island! Super atmospheric, with a cool history, friendly people, and a very tasty breakfast. If you order orange juice and add one espresso, it will be a bumble coffee 👌 Just try it!
Daria D — Google review
The atmosphere is nice ⛵ Staff is friendly and the service is attentive. (Waited a few minutes for a table) But the food is not worth the hype - 🍔🍟 it was almost cold when served, tasted average and a bit overpriced. But huge portions and drink prices are ok to be fair. I would rather go here for a drink. 🍺🍸

Praia do Porto Pim is a picturesque sandy cove located in the southern part of Horta's port on Faial Island in the Azores. It is known for its white sandy beach, clear waters, and views of São Sebastião Fort. The area features changing rooms and showers for visitors' convenience. The beach is sheltered by Monte da Guia, a volcanic crater, providing calm waters that are perfect for swimming and suitable for families with children.
Calm beach. One of the view sandy beaches on the Açores. Good for kids. Bars and coffees close by.
Janine M — Google review
I visited this beach twice because it was an easy walk from my hotel in Horta. The landscape is very nice. Afternoon time is relaxing with some bars and restaurants around. The water is shallow and looks polluted from algae. I give it five stars for the lanscape and three for the swimming conditions, so a final compromise of four! You can also swim near the gate of the agjacent sea wall.
ANASTASIOS T — Google review
A nice beach but many Man-o-war and Jellyfish due to the strong wind. Go to Stone Beach for perfect swimming if this beach is too windy.

Nice little beach with volcanic black sand. Reachable within 5min from Horta port.

Ufff, nice beach... although a bit crowded, but a nice space for ball games, for enjoying the sea (ocean) and for all water activities...

Smal but beautiful sand beach next to the whale museum, full of plastic trash during Winter due the windy wheater and the waves bringing it in from the open ocean.

Nice beach for a refreshing swim in the ocean. It's not too crowded and has a few cosy restaurants nearby. The edge of the ocean may appear a bit dirty because of all the seaweed-like plants near the shore. Deeper into the ocean is a rich sealife, perfect for snorkeling.

Marina
Nature & Parks
Marina da Horta is a bustling hub for transatlantic regattas and amateur sailors making the ocean crossing. It attracts a diverse array of vessels, from super yachts to small crafts. The marina is steeped in maritime superstition, with its walls and ground adorned with paintings by captains marking their voyages. Opened in 1986, this nautical facility can accommodate up to 300 boats and has been awarded the Blue Flag of Europe since 1987.
This is a must see art experience on the island with paintings from the ships that made the journey before us. I loved the sense of humor on many as well as the artistic talent.
Christine K — Google review
Lovely marina / harbour. Definitely a working harbour and a lot less tourist oriented; catering for the needs of crews stopping over on their trans-Atlantic / round the world adventures. Fascinating. Great tradition where the crews paint a logo or memento of their visit, some updated many times. Brilliant to wander round and read. A couple of bars / restaurants on the marina though mainly concentrated on street just off the marina at the Southern end. Usual places offering trips on and off the water. A nice "vibe" here, kids playing, people working. Very nice indeed.

Horta marina is one of the most visited in the world.Great promenade, colourfull walls. You can see the hundreds painting messages from sailors.its making lovely exhibition.Stunning view Pico
Aiva J — Google review
Beautiful island, green with sweet hills. And the marina is full of sailing boats doing a stop during their transat (well, like us). Crews do some painting everywhere. It is a must do for them.
Amedeo S — Google review
Horta marina is one of the most visited in the world and I think is the most colourful. Here all the visiting sailors decorate the harbour walls with their personal paintings making it a lovely exhibition. Also you feel the good vibes of a town surrounded by whales and sailors.

If you are coming to the Horta Marina by boat from the american continent you have to go on anchor in the harbour. Then a medical boat will come and get your information. After that you will be picked up around noon and be brought to the pcr test. We got our results per mail and per radio the next morning. If there are many tests it might take one more day. After receveing your results you are free on the azores. If you go into the marina, laundry costs 5€ (drying again 5€) per mashine. Showering costs 1,55€. We are on a 41 feet ship and paid around 15€ per night. So the prices are fine. I give 3 stars because the sanitaries are only open from 8-11:30 and 13-16. Thats a real disatvantage and i have never experienced it somewhere else.

The Municipal Market Horta is a small but charming market located at the end of a street near the boardwalk, next to a lovely park. It offers local products, including regional fruits and handmade chocolates at cafes like Acucar. Visitors can explore local vendors selling fruits, veggies, and crafts while enjoying tasty food and drinks at the food court or cafes inside. Miradouro de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, also known as Viewpoint to Lady of Conception, is a must-visit spot just north of Horta. Perched on the Ponta de Espalamaca, it offers a stunning aerial view of Horta and its harbor. On clear days, visitors can marvel at the sight of Caldeira do Faial and even catch glimpses of Pico, Sao Jorge, and Graciosa islands in the distance.
This is a fantastic viewpoint where you get a lovely overlook of the city of Horta and on the opposite side of the road you can see the black sand beach. So glad we stopped and got some great photos. The views of Mount Pico are also very good from up here.

Great view of the island! Sadly, busted beer bottles were on the ground right in front of the garbage reception. She looks over the port and the island and is very impressive. Can leave candles and say a prayer. Good parking on both sides of the street.

Park
Reserva Florestal Natural do Parque do Capelo is a beautiful, serene, and complimentary location where one can enjoy a picnic or barbecue while their children play in the playground or observe the deer. Although the playground could be enhanced with more equipment, there are ample picnic tables and barbecues available for use. The park also provides readily accessible wood and water for convenience. Additionally, there are well-maintained toilets on site.
This should be a "must see" for the island! It's amazing how much work was done here for what is basically just a really nice place to enjoy nature. Everything shows care and thought. The area is beautiful enough by itself, but add in the amount of trails and facilities that have been made available and it is simply amazing!
Jonathan K — Google review
Love this place! Definitely bring a picnic lunch and make the most of it. So many neat little trails with beautiful flora & fauna... Deer, birds small animals, too... This was great! Very clean bathrooms and multiple locations for them. Several trash reception very clean grounds.
Jinny G — Google review
It's a very nice, quiet and free place, where you can have your picnic (or barbeque) while your children play in the playground or watch the deers. The playground could be improved, there are just a slide and two swings. But there is plenty of picnic tables and barbeques (wood is freely provided, as well as water). There are also comfortable toilets. All sorrounded by nature.

Restaurant
Ah! Boca Santa is a charming eatery with an open-air seating arrangement, offering a laid-back dining experience. This establishment specializes in comforting, homemade fare that highlights locally sourced ingredients. One of their main attractions is the mouthwatering artisanal burgers, crafted from 100% Azorean meat and served on delectable bolo levedo, a sweet bread native to the Azores. Vegetarian options, salads, toasties, and sandwiches are also available.
Nice place inside a small mall. The burgers are superb and cheap as well. We ate 2 burgers, fries, salad and had 2 drinks for only 26€. Personnel is very friendly and helpful as well.
Guus S — Google review
If there was a way to have a life time supply of their burgers, I would be the first in line. No joke, they were without a doubt, the most delicious, perfectly cooked, juicy, flavourful burgers I have every had in my life. And, I am actually slightly mad about it, because they have ruined every other burgers chance : since eating here, I now know what a good burger is. Came here twice with my partner in 2 days, and we were almost rolling on the floor with how masterful they were. Works of art. The chicken burger, pork burger and the beef burger were to die for. If you don't go here, you will regret it.
Kathleen M — Google review
Holy moly, what a treat for the taste buds! The service was fantastic, and they took the time to explain the concept behind the dishes and make recommendations. You can tell straight away that everything is prepared from scratch, which you can really taste! We shared the pork and beef burgers, and every bite was worth it. I can highly recommend this restaurant!
Tobias S — Google review
Great food and fast service! Recommend trying the burgers or salads and finishing with the delicious chocolate “Lava” cake.

Ah! Boca Santa is a unique place in Faial. The street food concept here is quite different. The food is amazing, especially the burgers and fries. Friendly staff and good atmosphere.
Diogo B — Google review
Located in an indoor market for tourism is this gem, though we hear that they are moving to a store front near by. This is a woman owned lunch spot. We got the burger and fries. It was sooo yummy. We didn’t have cash on us, so after we ordered they told us where the atm was and didn’t fret that we didn’t pay right away. This is a great location to start your tour of the city
Carl R — Google review
I came for the vegetarian burger but was disappointed to find out that it was not available that day. Instead, I was recommended the salad, which was described as “really tasty and filling,” with the option to add a fried egg. That was not really what I had in mind for my dinner, but the owner’s convincing manner eventually made me decide to order the salad. I wanted to add some fries, but I was politely discouraged from doing so, as I was told the portion was very large. In reality, the salad was no more than average, not served with bread, and definitely not filling – especially if you came craving a burger. The fries I saw at other tables looked like a perfectly standard portion, not oversized at all. It also felt like the description of the salad was something the owner had repeated many times before. Since I was one of the first guests and the explanation already sounded very “rehearsed,” and because I later saw other vegetarian guests being turned away with exactly the same wording, I had the impression that the vegetarian burger is often not available. Nevertheless, the service was good, and it was clear that the owner put in a lot of effort, was attentive, and genuinely tried to make everyone happy. Still, it would be worth considering a proper alternative for when the vegetarian burger is not available.
V R — Google review
Best place to eat on Faial hands down. The bread is freshly baked by the owners, and all ingredients are top quality. Service is also top quality as the owner talks to every customer and asks if everything is good. The burgers are one of the best in Portugal. We came back two times.

Staying at Pousada Forte da Horta—inside a centuries-old fortress—was an unforgettable experience. If you’re looking for authenticity, this is it. The views of Pico are breathtaking, and the atmosphere is steeped in history and charm. The restaurant was a pleasant surprise: cozy, with standout service and a proper Portuguese meal that exceeded expectations. It’s a bit of a splurge, but absolutely worth it for the setting and experience.

What we loved: the view from our room, our balcony, the location, the staff, and the breakfast especially! I don’t know if the showers and sinks are as small in all the rooms as in ours, but if you are not a slender person, you may have difficulty with the shower. It was the smallest shower I have encountered. And the sink is very small and the counter very low. But I knew the bath size was on the small side and have no regrets. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The staff are wonderful, as is the breakfast. Would wish for coffee maker of some type in the room, but I adjusted :)

Fantastic experience for our Italian school group! We spent four nights at the pousada in early April 2025 and the staff were exceptionally kind and understanding when hosting 21 international teenagers! The location is exceptional, the food (we had two dinners and breakfast) was excellent and varied (they even catered for my vegan diet) and the rooms and pool met our expectations. I would definitely recommend this accommodation for groups!

Nice hotel with very good location near marina and restaurants. Our room was small, but clean. Breakfast is pretty good, but very small options for desserts and vegetables. WiFi is fast and stable. Hotel is pet friendly. It’s pity that there is no bathrobes and slippers. Sometimes we’ve heard noise from the hall.

The Pousada Forte da Horta is ideally located on the harbour offering incredible views of Pico and central to the town’s many restaurants, shops and water activities. Full of old world charm, the preservation and tasteful incorporation of the old fortifications into the building and grounds make it an extra special place to stay.
Michael A — Google review
Disappointing Experience and Total Lack of Transparency We had booked two rooms in July. Due to the cancellation of our flight, we unfortunately could not make it to the hotel. The booking conditions were clear, and we accept them—even though a goodwill gesture for services not rendered is common practice in the industry. What is unacceptable is that we received no invoice for a stay that was charged in full. Neither the hotel nor customer service responded to our inquiries. A payment without an invoice raises serious questions: negligence, fraud, or shady practice? In any case, an experience to avoid.
Pierre P — Google review
The advantage of this place is that it is right at the marina, and the view from the room is perfect. However I would have expected at least a refrigerator at this price range.

Very cool, laid-back place. Seems to get quite busy in the evenings and understandably so, the dishes are simple but delicious. Most of the negative reviews aim at the slow service. Great place. Friendly people. Lovely food. Nice drinks. Absolutely can't understand people going elsewhere. This is it. Totally recommend. Easy to find. Nice old harbour side on the left. Easy jazz. No bookings. Try the sausage starter and the octopus rice. Or the seafood soup and the fish main. Yummy. Had some nice artisanal beers and a house gin you could scuba in!

Imagine going out for dinner, sending back a steak that tasted of prawns, and ending up stuck in the restaurant for over an hour while the police are called. That’s exactly what happened to us here. We ate at this restaurant three times in a row because we initially enjoyed the food and atmosphere. Unfortunately, our third visit turned into a nightmare. One of our steaks tasted strongly of prawns/fish and seemed unsafe to eat, so we sent it back after a few bites. Instead of dealing with the situation directly, the owner summoned us (through staff) to come inside to speak with him. We invited him to come outside to our table instead, but he never did, and no response was offered. To our shock, the steak stayed on the bill. When we refused to pay for a dish we could not eat, the owner threatened to call the police. When we still refused, he did call the police and told us we could not leave. We then had to wait in the restaurant for over an hour until the police finally arrived. The police informed him that the law is clear: if food is unsafe and not eaten, the customer does not have to pay. Only then did he remove the steak from the bill, after first pointing to a sign on his door that falsely claimed otherwise. Based on other reviews, this seems to be his usual practice — whenever customers send food back, he refuses refunds and immediately threatens to call the police, knowing most people will fold and pay to avoid the ordeal. The police proved him wrong, but the whole episode was incredibly stressful and put a very nasty end to an otherwise lovely visit to the island. My advice to others: if the owner threatens to call the police in this situation, don’t be intimidated. Call his bluff — the law is on your side. This is a deeply unpleasant and dishonest practice, and I want to warn others: if you have a problem with the food here, be prepared for intimidation instead of basic customer service.

Taberna do Pim offers a wonderful outdoor seating area that's perfect for watching the sunset - truly a magical setting that draws crowds for good reason. The restaurant is extremely popular and bustling with activity, though they don't take reservations so be prepared to wait for a table. The staff is friendly and welcoming, but the popularity comes with a downside: service can be quite slow due to how busy they get. You'll need to be patient, especially during peak sunset hours. The food quality is good and satisfying once it arrives. However, I'd recommend skipping the house red wine, which was unfortunately not very enjoyable - perhaps stick to other beverage options or ask for wine recommendations. Overall, the price-to-value ratio is reasonable for what you get. If you're willing to wait for a table and don't mind slower service in exchange for that spectacular sunset view and decent food, it's worth a visit. Just plan accordingly and maybe arrive early or be prepared for a longer evening.

Nice, calm and cozy place. Very nice service, delicate attention to guests. Tasty food and local wine. Worth to come anytime. Strongly recommended.

Very nice fish soup also servis and restaurant itself. Calamari would be nice to have them written on the menu how they come prepared - we did not expect this little bit boring fried style.
Tomas M — Google review
Lovely little find, food was really good, as was the wine. The waiting staff were really friendly and helpful. Be prepared to share a table if you are just a couple. This is a really cozy find and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

Good food and service and the most amazing spot to enjoy the sunset in Horta (a few tables outside with views over the beach). Traditional tavern with small menu and very decent options. We tried the tuna steak and the alcatra (beef stew) which were good. Service was fast and super kind. Overall, unique point to have dinner or a glass of wine while enjoying the sunset in the Porto Pim.

Day 2

Keep it simple
For day 2, these 6 places should be enough to fill your day with something exciting to do in Horta. Start the day with Capelinhos Volcano Interpretation Center and make your way through the city to get to Faial Botanical Garden. This should take about 7 hours of your day.

Specialty Museums
Nestled in the stunning landscape of the Azores, the Capelinhos Volcano Interpretation Center is a must-visit for anyone intrigued by volcanic activity and natural history. Opened in 2008 and designed by architect Nuno Ribeiro Lopes, this unique center is ingeniously built underground to blend seamlessly with its surroundings, minimizing visual disruption while providing an immersive experience.
This place is just EPIC. Very interesting museum about the creation of new land mass on Faial along with the lighthouse. Definitely go up there and take some photos like the ones I uploaded here. Also nice for taking some drone shots.
Yannik D — Google review
Compared to other visitor centers in the Azores I need to say this one was rather underwhelming. It tries to be something really good, but the whole organisation is a bit haphazard, there is no concept and the moovie in the auditorium is just a bunch of nice drone footage about the islands without any real knowledge or story told. I’d just skip tha auditorium and go straight to watch the other film in the exhibition. There is a nice interactive sand playground towards the end, check it out if you are with kids or just want to have some fun.
Adam — Google review
Amazing museum. You can go there for multiple reasons: the history of that place, the rocks they display, or let alone the architecture of the museum (it's a bit like the hideout of an old Bond villain). The cafe at the entrance ist good, too. The only negative things are the prices of both: the regular entry is 10€ (also allows you to go on top of the light house), the cafe charges 5€ for an espresso plus a small piece of pastry. I find this a bit much for the region. I would nevertheless strongly recommend this place to visitors of Faial
Dr. O — Google review
The Museum opens at nine and closes at six pm (in summer). It is very interesting and interactive, it explains in depth the formation of the Capelinhos peninsula in 1957, following a devastating eruption just off the coast of Faial. The ticket includes a visit up the lighthouse, with an astonishing view of the surroundings. Some parts of the Museum were probably cutting edge when it was opened, but look a bit outdated now, for example the 3d projection of the formation of the peninsula, very interesting but pretty dark and out of focus.
Stefano M — Google review
We came out here before we walked around the caldera and it was very interesting to see the different types of volcanoes and then actually visit one later. Great bathroom facilities and just a little coffee shop for concessions. I do wish that the information about the 1957 eruption had been a little more extensive in the museum portion of the building. The video was great and it was fascinating to see the evolution of the land through their maps. Spectacular views from the top of the lighthouse.
Linda E — Google review
🌋 Best museum in the island! Old light house was cover by the ashes of the volcano. They rebuilt the old tower and did a museum underground. You can go up the lighthouse for the great views and visit the museum. 🆕 Some parts of the museum have been recently renovated
Nuno B — Google review
❗️only 1€ for entering the lighthouse. 10€ for full ticket to visit the exhibition, the museum and the lighthouse. Lady at reception did not explain the price difference. We found 10€ to be too much for the experience. Lighthouse is closed when too strong wind. Beautiful surroundings, big parking.

Great exposition. There is a guided tour in English every working day, included in the entrance fee. (10€) It was very informative!

Lighthouse of Ribeirinha

Historical landmark
The Lighthouse of Ribeirinha is an intriguing site with a troubled past. The road leading to it can be treacherous, but the destination is well worth the journey. It stands as a testament to the power of nature, having been damaged by an earthquake. Access inside the lighthouse is prohibited for safety reasons. Care must also be taken around aggressive cows in the area.
This ruin of this lighthouse is another victim of the infamous earthquake that shook Faial in 1998. The characteristically red metal dome housing the lamp has been destroyed, but the lighthouse tower still miraculously remains standing despite its huge structural damage. The rest of the lighthouse is mostly gone, but it is still admirable how much is resisting the harsh Azores weather. If there is one ruin on the island worth visiting it is this one.
Andrej M — Google review
It's worth visiting while touring the island. It's a beautiful view and has signs regarding the history of the lighthouse and the earthquake that destroyed it.
Braxton B — Google review
Interesting ruins of a lighthouse after earthquake. It is forbidden to enter it. Be careful with the agressive cows nearby 😬. Do not forget to visit the nearest church ruins as well (Igreja de São Mateus) , it is even bigger attraction 😇.

This place is great!, part of the road to this place is awful, but worth it once you get there, we had the place to ourselves for well over an hour. the views are dramatic and the building is held together by good luck and wishes at this point. Hiking Trails
Monte da Guia is a small volcano with a collapsed cone facing the open ocean, offering spectacular views of Porto Pim bay and Horta city on one side, and an impressive almost perfect circle of the collapsed cone itself on the other. The promontory was once a whaling station in the 19th century, and some of the historic buildings still stand by the water.
The hike to the end of the road is around two and half kilometers from the harbour of Horta. You can take shortcuts by steps. Anyway is worth the time and physical effort because gives wonderful vistas downward. To the city of Horta city and harbour, the places west of Horta and to two other natural harbours: one is Praia do Pim north and the other, lying south, is shaped like number eight. On the way you have also vistas of Pico island with his conical mountain, the highest peak in Portugal. Of course someone can go up to the small mountain by car, and some people do so. But I really enjoyed the hike. The top of the hill at the end of the road is closed to the public.
ANASTASIOS T — Google review
Whether you have the option to drive, bike, walk or even run here, you should definitely make this one of your stops when visiting Horta. The views over the caldeira, the town or even Pico (if the visibility permits) are indeed great. The little delightfull chapel next to the small parking place adds another interesting sight to behold. Just behind the chapel you can find a marked trail, which will take you on a short hike around the western end of the hill, offering a great view over the open ocean.
Andrej M — Google review
Beautiful viewpoint overlook to Horta and the Southeast part of the Island. The road up is an easy leisurely walk. The overlook into the caldera is impressive and then there's the wide expanse of the Atlantic southward to the horizon. Five Stars for this.
Joseph G — Google review
A very nice view of the surrounding bays and parts of the island. Worth a visit.

Oké. You have a gret view here. To the Atlantic. The town of Faiala. The only drawback. The radiostation is blocking the view and way to the west. There is no chance to watch the sun go up.

Nestled in the heart of Faial, the Teatro Faialense stands as a cultural gem and the island's primary venue for artistic expression. This historic theater, which first opened its doors in 1856 and was rebuilt in 1916, showcases an eclectic architectural style reminiscent of early 20th-century design. Its striking yellow-ochre tiled façade leads to a beautifully harmonious interior featuring multiple tiers of boxes and a stunning contemporary ceiling painted by local artist José Nuno da Câmara Pereira.

Nestled in the heart of the Azores, Faial Botanical Garden has been welcoming nature enthusiasts since its opening in 1986. Spanning two locations—one in Flamengos parish and another at a higher elevation in Pedro Miguel—the garden is dedicated to conserving and studying the region's unique flora. It also plays a vital role in environmental education, highlighted by its acclaimed Azores Seed Bank program, recognized for excellence in rare seed conservation.
Adorable staff and tripod Lion, well arranged garden and very well taken care of, thank you for everything. One of the best botanical garden I’ve visited for decades.

Beautiful botanical garden! Showcasing lots of different plants while still looking natural. I recommend watching the introductory movie about their work. The orchid collection was in bloom - phenomenal!!! Absolutely a staple to visit!
Viconstanze U — Google review
Faial Botanic Garden is a beautiful and well-maintained spot, though I expected it to be a bit larger. Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed with a complimentary iced mint tea, which was a lovely touch. The garden features a video room with an informative video explaining the garden's history and significance. The video was excellent, but it doesn't autoplay—you'll need to manually start it, which was a minor inconvenience. The garden itself is stunning, with every area thoughtfully curated and well-kept. Despite its smaller size, it’s a peaceful and enriching place to visit.
Olívio M — Google review
Good place to spend an hour or two. The person who sold us the tickets was super friendly and gave us a short intro in great English and offered tasty herbal tea. The garden itself is not huge and full of blossom but rather interesting if you want to see endemic Azorean plants of just a rather good looking one if you have time to spend walking. Just don't expect wonders. Do expect basic niceness and few tiny pleasant details. Totally worth the time (took us about an hour) and money (5€/adult, 2€/child) in my opinion.
Alexander K — Google review
This botanical garden has a great collection of endemic plants and carries on sublime work with their seed bank project. We could get a little herbal tea offered with our ticket, and there is an indoor museum part where they will show a movie about the history of how it was established. Definitely worth a visit to learn more about the Azorean unique flora and ecosystem, the threats its facing and the work carried out to protect it 💚
Teresa C — Google review
A nice place to visit even in winter, it was a real surprise: we did not expect to find such a rich variety of orchids and a demonstration of the endemic vegetal life of the archipelago. The cat Tarzan was super keen to welcome and cuddle the visitors. The person at the reception was very nice and available to explanations and chat. 5 €/person, and it was worth it. Don't miss it!

Pizzaria California offers pizzas that meet the required standards. The sauce has a hint of spice, particularly in the pepperoni. The service is friendly, and there is a wide variety of dishes to explore on the menu. Bruce G — Google review
The most ridiculous place to try to get pizza. Went twice well within working hours.... could not get a table or a pizza to go... Unless I wanted to wait 2 hours. Staff is the most non customer focused... Or... Perhaps back of the house can only make one piece at a time and three pizzas ordered shuts down the whole place? Either way... I do NOT recommend this place. Learn how to make potential customers happy....not turn them away multiple times pissed off. Something's wrong when you see a completely empty restaurant but they will not make you a pizza or sell you one to go!?!?

Genuíno Restaurante is a must-visit dining spot on Faial Island, Azores. Located in Horta, this restaurant offers an array of delectable dishes that will tantalize your taste buds. With its charming ambiance and top-notch service, Genuíno Restaurante promises a delightful dining experience. Whether you're craving seafood or Portuguese cuisine, this restaurant has something for everyone.
We came here for dinner one night during our stay on Faial. My girlfriend had the Tuna steak, while I had Tune meatballs - we shared a starter of local cheese. Food was great, service was attentive and the prices fair. All in all nothing to complain about.
Mazze A — Google review
We had a decent meal at Genuino, but to be honest, we have eaten better elsewhere on Faial for less money. But I guess the fact that Genuino is situated in Horta means the prices are higher. As a starter I ordered the fish soup which was ok, but served at almost boiling temperature. Way too hot! The polvo was very tasty, but it took way too long before we got served our main course. Sadly this restaurant does not offer outdoor seating. It is a popular place, so make sure you make a reservation beforehand. Staff was fluent in English.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Outstanding seafood and service! Restaurante Genuíno is a must-visit in Horta. The staff are welcoming and attentive, and the setting overlooking the bay is beautiful. The seafood is exceptionally fresh, and the grilled octopus is the highlight—perfectly tender with a subtle char and incredible flavor. Pair it with a local Azorean wine for a memorable meal. Highly recommended for anyone who loves great service and top-quality seafood.

The service was great. Our waitresses were kind and did their best to answer all the questions we had. No reservation and no wait time! Our fish dinner plates were delicious
Pearl R — Google review
To be avoided, To begin with, the welcome was very confusing and, despite a reservation made over a week ago, we had to wait an hour for our table without any explanation. Despite a large number of seats, the manager was unable to seat only 4 people who had already reserved! Out of four entrees ordered, only two were served. Fish dishes such as tuna were overcooked and over-salted. As the wine ordered was not available, the waiter told us that there was only one bottle left at that price, but on checking the bill, it turned out that the wine was €10 more expensive. I'd advise you to do your own sums. As a guide, this restaurant is to be avoided at all costs!
Sacha M — Google review
Our main courses were lukewarm. Our best guess is that the fish had been pre-cooked and then an attempt made to reward it. Even the boiled potatoes were just above room temperature. The waiter did her best but obviously the restaurant is understaffed. It was a zoo at the checkout in order to pay. We have paid less for better food in the Azores.

Nothing to add to all the positive reviews before. Very simple and delicious, a small buffet of everything that is probably cooked in Azorean everyday life. Don’t expect a salad bar or healthy food or fancy drinks, it’s all about sausages, very tender meat, rice, potatoes and some vegetables. First time I really liked sautéed cabbage. Friendly owner. Super cheap.

Reserved a table for 9PM. Arrived at the restaurant at 8.50PM. The waitress told us to wait 10 minutes. After 35 minutes under the rain, nobody came outside to call us. When we asked (3 times before getting a clear answer), the table was not ready yet. What’s worse is that the waitress didn’t even try to apologize or to find a solution. Terrible services, never happened anything like that in 10 days in the Azores. Not recommended

Good food, nice interiors, great location, good service. We went to Praya for a light lunch after swimming at the beach nearby. Everything was delicious with the Queijo Morro (local cheese) being the highlight. The menu looked very promising. Good wine list as well. The interiors are nicely decorated which differentiate the place a lot from the standard tavern aesthetics that you usually find in the region. Service was excellent.

First off.... staff here is always cheerful and helpful. 2nd....view is BEST in Faial in my opinion!!! Grab a table upstairs/outside ...enjoy the waves, the view of Pico and always cool music. Food is solid, just a limited amount of items. No worries is the wine list is much more in depth. HIGHLY RECOMMEND
HENTHORNE — Google review
We waited 50 mins for our dish to come. The fish of the day was not fresh and came with smelly taste. The only thing positive is the view of beach. Not recommended.
Yang S — Google review
Praya is the kind of place that makes you want to slow down, breathe deep, and stay way longer than you planned. Located right on the sand at Praia do Almoxarife, this beach restaurant has one of the most stunning terraces in the Azores — front-row seats to the Atlantic and Mount Pico beyond. Sunset here is pure magic. The vibe? Laid-back but elegant. Wooden textures, island design, and a warm, open space that blends perfectly with the landscape. You can show up barefoot from the beach and still feel like you’re dining somewhere special. The food? Fresh, local, and full of flavor. Think seared tuna, island cheeses, creative starters to share, and great vegetarian options too. Everything is made with care and beautifully presented, but without the fuss of fine dining. It’s more “modern Azorean bistro” than traditional — and it works. Drinks? Excellent wine list featuring local producers, plus creative cocktails. Try the local white wine with fresh fish — a perfect match.

The fish was delicious, good service and amazing ambiance! The music with the view is perfect. Definitely recommend for a sunset dinner or even just a cocktail/ coffee.

The food was really mediocre. There were only 3 waiters for full restaurant and it made them rude. The await time was 2h, so you can go there only if you are not hungry 🤣 I will not come back and cannot recommend

Day 3

North side of town
For day 3, we recommend exploring the north side side of town. Start the day off with Torre do Relógio, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Monte Queimado. All together, your day would be filled with about 8 hours of non-stop fun.

Located at the top of a set of stairs and through a narrow passageway, you will discover the clock tower known as Torre do Relogio. Originally part of the old Matriz church demolished in 1825, this tower has stood since the 18th century. Adjacent to it lies Jardim Florencio Terra, a lovely park that offers visitors an opportunity to take a break.

Scrimshaw museum

Handicraft museum
The Scrimshaw Museum is a treasure trove for those fascinated by maritime history and artistry. It boasts the largest private collection of scrimshaw in the world, featuring intricately carved whale and sperm whale teeth adorned with diverse motifs crafted by talented whalers and local artists. Beyond these stunning pieces, visitors can explore an extensive array of ivory and sperm whale bone artifacts, alongside a rich assortment of photographs, manuscripts, maps, books, and documents that delve into the realms of whaling and navigation.
A small but very interesting museum, at the firs floor of Peter Café Sport. For just 2.5 euros a person will accompany you up the stairs and answer all your questions about the collection. The collection includes hundreds of spermwhales' teeth engraved with black ink ("scrimshaw"), some of which date back to the XIX century. The subjects range from marine life scenes (whale hunting for example) to portraits of common people or famous persons. There are also very beatiful objects or jewels made in ivory, an engraved walrus tusk, engraved hyppoes teeth, a narvalo tooth and some tools for whale hunting.

Monte Queimado, named for the black color of its rocks, stands impressively behind Porto Pim beach. It is part of the Protected Landscape Area of Monte da Guia and can be accessed via the Entre Montes Trail. At the top, you'll find ruins of an old estate and enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of Horta city and Porto Pim bay. The hike is moderate with many stairs on the way down but manageable.
The hike is relatively short and easy to find between the trees. Mind you, it takes a bit of climbing, but definitely worth the view.

Cantinho das Provas, a wine bar in Faial, has successfully introduced top-quality Sushi to Horta, which is ideal for showcasing the excellent Azorean yellow fin tuna. This establishment was created by local couple Mariana Silveira and Franz Hutschenreuter. I highly recommend booking a wine tasting workshop with them through their Facebook page.
A wonderful dining experience with outstanding service. The staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming, and the food—especially when paired with the wines—is truly exceptional. The atmosphere is warm and relaxed, with soft background music and a beautifully designed interior that perfectly complements the character of the restaurant. We highly recommend choosing the €25 wine pairing option with your meal. The wines are mostly local and come with interesting stories that add an extra layer to the experience. The pairings improved each course and made the evening even more enjoyable. As we understood, all the ingredients are locally sourced, which adds to the authenticity and quality of the dishes. We shared seven different dishes, which was just the right amount for two people. With four wines (plus a small extra refill for free, amazing service, because we loved one so much) and a bottle of sparkling water, the total came to €120—excellent value for what we received. All in all, highly recommended.

OMG everything we had (and we had everything) was truly out of this world. The chef owner gladly shared how the food was made and information on the different plates. Great local wine selection. The ceviche and cured fish were the best. Everything fresh and tasty. Too bad we had to go back to Pico as we would have returned for more!

We had the most wonderful dinner at Cantinho das Provas. We ordered the tasting menu with wine pairings. The food was simple yet creative, full of flavour and delicious. The wines had been thoughtfully chosen to accompany the meal and were among the best we tried in the Azores. Franz was also a warm and friendly host who told us about viticulture and farming on Pico island and more generally in the Azores. Cantinho is a must for anyone with an appreciation for good food, good wine and connecting with the Azores through a unique and laid back dining experience.

We had originally planned to go for dinner, but unfortunately the restaurant was fully booked, so the owner kindly offered us a table at lunchtime instead. We certainly did not regret it! Each wine was presented with great care and affection, and the dishes themselves were outstanding – both in quality and in the way they were composed and served in sequence. This little restaurant ranks among the very best we dined at during our journey through the Azores!

The café provides a comfortable, open-air environment with friendly service and has become popular among both tourists and locals.
Absolutely amazing place to eat. They have a nice courtyard to sit and enjoy your meal. We had octopus-salad, swordfish steak and a fish soup (which is a bit spicy). Everything tasted really good. Would recommend!

Great spot right down town offering both indoor and outdoor seating. We ordered firstly order garlic bread, which was not too crispy and grill toasted followed by tuna and sword fish steaks which were flame grilled and came with a potato salad, green salad and a diced tomato salad. All a real good mix we finally finished off with a home made vanilla ice cream with pineapple chunks (sounds weird but actually a really good combo) with a short bead cookie. And a key-lime pie. All dishes were flavourful and showed the chef cares. To drink we ordered the berry sangria.
Oliver J — Google review
Such a fantastic ambience and yet so dissatisfying. They have a huge grill but the menu doesn't resemble it (1 fish and 2 meat options). We ended up ordering garlic bread (not crisp at all, just flat bread with oil) and burgers with fries. The burgers were OK, but you would expect a bit more in a restaurant (rather than Burger King). The sauce served on the burger and with the fries contained mint, which you have to like. This sauce should/could be optional at charge. When asking for some ketchup for the fries we were informed quite rudly 3 times that it would cost extra, which we confirmed 3 times. We paid extra just to be given some small plastic bags of ketchup. The mint sauce that no one liked to eat with the burger came free of charge. Service was arrogant and so fast that customers don't really feel welcome to stay. We ate just as quickly, left and we won't come back.
Lena B — Google review
The vegan curry was delicious. The menu is varied and they have an ample choice of appetizers. On the minus side is the service. Only the girl that welcomed us at the door was professional. They have a large cosy courtyard with big tables. If you are not a family or a group of friends, you might be asked to share a table with other guests, which was not at all a problem for us.

Unfortunately we had a very mediocre/bad experience tonight. The staff seemed in a bad mood almost across the board. The prices for the main dishes are fairly high compared to the rest of the island and the amount that is on the plate. A steak that we ordered medium came bleue/rare (even less than that, if possible). On request, the steak was grilled again until it was medium, then it was also tasty. The fries were good, crispy, skin on and with nice condiments. The other sides were not very satisfying. The portion of swordfish that we ordered was very small, a little dry but still ok in taste. The fish soup was good. Nothing that’s really up to the restaurant but certainly didn’t contribute to a good experience was people having their bare feet on the benches and others changing the diapers of their babies !on! the tables. All in all we wouldn’t visit again, just not good value for many and no good dining out experience in general.

If you find yourself on the beautiful island of Faial, make sure to stop by Kabem Todos for an unforgettable dining experience. A Hidden Gem on Faial – Unforgettable Dining Experience During our stay on the island of Faial, we had the pleasure of dining at Chef Renata’s family-run restaurant – an experience that left a lasting impression. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, reflecting the personal touch and care that goes into every detail. Renata's daughter, who manages the service, was exceptionally attentive and friendly. She went above and beyond to make sure every guest felt comfortable and satisfied, fulfilling every request with genuine warmth. The food was outstanding. Whether you're a vegetarian or a meat lover, you'll find something to enjoy. The vegetarian dishes were creative and flavorful, and the steak was cooked to absolute perfection – just as ordered. You can clearly sense the talent and passion behind the kitchen, with every dish showcasing a unique idea and careful execution. Despite the high quality, the prices are very reasonable by German standards. The wine list is extensive, with a strong focus on regional options and helpful recommendations to match your meal. Had we stayed longer on the island, we would have returned more than once. This restaurant is a true recommendation for anyone looking to enjoy something special without spending a fortune.

Cantina da Praça offers a fantastic dining experience with a variety of delicious dishes. The meal starts with a superb fish soup, followed by a remarkably tender octopus paired with unique sweet potatoes and an exquisite steak. The dessert is also outstanding. For those staying in Horta, this restaurant is a must-visit for its amazing food and drinks. Their cocktails are particularly noteworthy, as the skilled bartender knows how to surprise guests with something extraordinary. The service is excellent and exceptionally friendly.
This is one of the fancier and better spots I'm Horta. It has a very cool atmosphere with music playing and cool furniture. The service is very good and polite. We had a couple of steaks that were very delicious. I asked for mine to be medium rare, however part of the steak came back pretty rare, of not raw, however they were kind enough to cook it some more. The taste was on point. Everything had amazing flavor. We also had the creme Brule which was amazing along with a cocktail that also was delicious. The only downside is that you'll pay much more for this meal than other places. Granted, there are only one or two other spots in Horta that even have this type of food, so it makes sense. I think it was worth the price. Few things to note: there is no menu handed to you, when you enter into the main space, the menu is written on the wall. Additionally, you have to pay for the water which is kind of a pain. I'm still giving 5 stars cause we had a great experience and these few things didn't bother me. I'd come back. Forgot to take photos of the food so I only have the cocktail.

Had a fantastic meal here, really nice steak followed by a local dessert. Superb food and friendly service. Bit cold and drafty but otherwise perfect, and I can't fault the value for money.

Small restaurant, recommended to make reservation in advance. You may easily park your car at the square. Fantastic fish soup, you must taste it! 😋 Hamburger was OK, potato chips is a good choice. "Fish of the day" was excellent, but I do not remember the name of the fish...

We had an amazing dinner. An excellent fishsoup followed by a super tender octopus with very special sweet potatoes & a delicous and tender steak. Also the desert was excellent. If you are staying in Horta this place is a must eat and drink. Therefore I also recommend ordering a cocktail, since the barkeeper really knows how to surprise you with something special. Thanks a lot for this wonderful evening. :-) PS.: Service was excellent and super friendly

Amazing fish soup (which i don't have photo of 😅) and fish of the day totally on point (the vegetable and mushrooms were also delicious. Fast and kind service - first time in the azores i got served beer with foam (*happy noises in czech*). The menu is very small, but if everything is as good as the dishes i had, you have much to look forward to ☺️.

Nature & Parks
Nestled in the heart of Horta, the Estação de Peixes Vivos // Aquário do Porto Pim is a unique destination for those eager to explore the rich marine life of the Azores. This aquarium showcases an array of common coastal species found in the archipelago while also providing insights into the deep-sea ecosystems surrounding it.
It was a pleasant surprise! We had been told it was small so we only went because it was included in the tour of te Dabney house. I am delighted that we did! It is indeed small, but it is a very interesting project! It is very important to have the guide explanation of how the Aquarium works, and on that I have to say Alejandro was not only professional and kind, but also his enthusiasm for his work is contagious! Thank you for the visit and I only pity that we did not dedicate some more time to it!
Rita R — Google review
Nice place to visit ( specially if you take time to do the trekking around Monte da Guia, its on the way). The cost p/ person is 4 eur. Indeed not a typical aquarium that lives only from tourism. The idea here its to mixure tourism with a work place. 90% of the fishes (which are exclusively from Azores region) will be sold & transferred to other aquariums around the world or are temporarily there to be taken care off. I recommend it. The staff was nice and explain us many stuff. In the end its possible to watch a 7min video with a short explanation of the marine life around Faial.
LFC — Google review
Overpriced! Close to a tourist trap... there is a reason why you don't see pictures of it... very kind and helpful staff but the aquarium is closer to some tanks with fish... you find one aquarium and 7 tanks with windows. Not worth the money, 4 per adult. The worst part of it is that you can't get the ticket for the aquarium alone, you have to visit another exposition about American consuls (boring)...
Nuno R — Google review
Supposedly it is a public aquarium but in practice it is a collection holding tanks for a private company that supplies fishes from Portuguese waters to public aquariums around the world. The species present depend on the orders the private company receives and the aquariums are mostly bare tanks as it is temporary. The one highlight is that they do some wildlife rehabilitation work, mostly with sea turtles.
Lígia V — Google review
Terrible terrible service. It closes at 5 pm and the lady did not want to let us in at 4:50 even though we had purchased tickets before. She was very rude but eventually let us in. DO NOT VISIT THIS PLACE. It's a waste of money. There are barely any fish to see and the place is just awful. Avoid going here because there is nothing to see, typical tourist trap.

Dabney, the first United States Consul General to the Azores, moved to Faial in 1806, with his son Charles and grandson Samuel also holding the same position over time. The museum provides insight into their impact on Faial's development and history.

(Translated by Google) During their time in Horta, the Dabney family exerted significant local influence, both economically and socially. They settled on the property known as "Casa Dabney" or "Casa da Horta" and contributed to the strengthening of trade relations, particularly those related to whaling and support for American ships. The legacy of Dabney and his family is still remembered in the Azores as a remarkable example of foreign diplomatic and cultural presence in the archipelago. It deserved a more dynamic space than just panels. (Original) Durante sua permanência na Horta, a família Dabney exerceu grande influência local, tanto econômica quanto socialmente. (Translated by Google) Attention Spaniards 🇪🇸👇🏻 ✅ Positive aspects: It's a top visit if you're in Horta and want to soak up a bit of the island's history. It's right next to Monte da Guia, in the heart of Porto Pim, so the surroundings are already stunning. What we liked most was that the guide was Spanish. He treated us wonderfully, gave us a super interesting introduction to the Dabney family, and gave us a great context. Thanks to that, we enjoyed the exhibition much more. The house is well-designed, with panels that explain everything very clearly, and it's free. Plus, you can go anytime because it's open almost every day. ❌ Negative aspects: It's a short visit, more for reading and learning about the history. 🌐 Overall rating: It's a highly recommended stop if you're in Horta. It's in a beautiful setting, you learn a lot in a short time, and if you're lucky enough to be served by the same guide as us, the experience will be even better. It's worth it.

The Fábrica da Baleia de Porto Pim, located in Monte da Guia, Horta, Faial Island, Azores, is a museum managed by the Observatorio do Mar dos Acores. It offers insight into the history of whaling on Faial and the Azorean whaling industry. The museum showcases the processing of sperm whales from raw meat to oil and other byproducts and displays a large sperm whale skeleton.
Would recommend everyone to visit this museum the first day they arrive at Horta! You will get a better understanding of the town. The museum is also very well-designed, I absolutely enjoyed my visit there! The museum also comes with a cite little souvenirs shop
Tszyu — Google review
For centuries, whaling (or whale hunting) directly shaped the culture of the Azores and impacted the life and traditions of its inhabitants. Whaling culminated in mid-20th century by developing into an efficient and methodical industrial complex resembling a production line. This museum does a fantastic job in showing and explaining the realities of this period openly and directly, but at the same time sensitively enough and without resorting to graphic depictions of the hunting itself. This makes the museum suitable for anyone who would like to learn about the history and the rise and fall of the whaling sector, but also about sperm whales, their behaviours, anatomy and biology. The exhibits are very well put together, with plenty of information included and without being overwhelming. Overall, we highly recommend adding the visit to this museum to your schedule when visiting Faial.
Andrej M — Google review
Very interesting and the history of whailing in the Azores was well conveyed (also in english). Nice selection of exhibits and videos. Highly recommended.

Very interesting museum (in the originale whaling factory) in which you will learn not only the history of the factory but also everything about the processing of a spermwhale, from the raw meat to the oil and other byproducts. There is also a huge spermwhale skeleton on display. Luckily nowadays whale hunting is not allowed anymore, but this museum is of great historical importance.

Very lovely little museum. It has all the old machines and does some explaining on a handout in a preferred language. Not too busy. Whaling is horrible but the museum doesnt care. They are sad to have closed the doors of the factory after a dying demand of whale products hahaha.

The waiter (probably owner) did not greet us properly, told us impolitely that he can only make pizza when someone wanted to order something different from the menu and had hardly any ingredients there, so that 3 of the 4 pizzas we ordered were not possible as described in the menu. Very tasty food in an all-you-can-eat style for 16 euros/person. The menu is pretty varied and you can choose for yourself, the drinks and dessert being included in the same price. The people are very nice and serviable and we enjoyed ourselves.

RUDE! Arrived @ 1:50, sign said they closed @ 3, and we saw people eating so we entered. An extremely rude man said “no closed!” So, we asked if he knew anywhere else that might be open and he just shrugged. Wouldn’t eat here if it was the last place on earth so rude!

Don't let the nondescript exterior fool you. Inside is a modern air conditioned decor. The buffet was varied and well presented. We lingered and were not rushed. Very pleasant.
