Palencia in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Palencia, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Palencia province offers one of Spain’s highest concentrations of Romanesque architecture, with dozens of rural churches and monasteries scattered across its villages. The Camino de Santiago crosses the province, bringing historic pilgrim routes, small stone towns and open landscapes of the Tierra de Campos. To the north, the Fuentes Carrionas and Fuente Cobre Natural Park provides hiking, wildlife and mountain scenery. Visitors can also explore the Canal de Castilla’s old locks and towpaths and try regional specialties such as roast suckling lamb and local cheeses.
With favorites like Restaurante Ajo de Sopas, Restaurante Asador La Encina, and Restaurante La Traserilla, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Restaurante Babel and Bar Maño so you can get the best taste of Palencia while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Located on Mayor Antigua Street, the Catedral de San Antolín is a captivating blend of Visigothic and Romanesque architecture. Originally a 7th-century Visigothic basilica, it was transformed into a Romanesque Cathedral by Sancho III. The cathedral boasts five entrance doors, with the Virgin or Bishop door being particularly noteworthy.
OH WOW what a building , the outside architecture is astounding, I didn’t go in as today I hadn’t time , it’s meant to be the 3rd largest cathedral in Spain and I could believe that very easily. The square in front of the building is so well kept and the spires of the building with thier decorative architecture that dominate this area are simply fantastic, this is a real must visit when in Palencia
Aidan M — Google review
The gothic Cathedral Basilica of Saint Antoninus, dedicated to Saint Antonius of Pampers, is one of the largest cathedrals in Europe (130m x 42m high x 50m wide) similar in size to Cathedral of Reims, and Notre Dame de Paris. It is generally known as “the unknown beauty" because it is not as well known as other Spanish cathedrals, though it has works of art of great value, including a fabulous El Greco: the martyrdom of St. Sebastian from 1579. A curiosity are the stork nests on the tower, so you are constantly followed by the characteristic noisy bill-clattering, which appears to be distant machine gun fire.
Jesper A — Google review
Very impressive and interesting cathedral! Entry is 6 Euros but it is definitely worth it. Being Spain's 3rd biggest cathedral, it offers countless chapels with richly decorated altairs, several choirs, two big naves, a transept and catacombs. The condition is surprisingly good due to excellent maintenance.
Ludowig G — Google review
Very nice building It is worth to look at it from different angles We didn't go in, but situated next to the university and yet in a quiet and peaceful area
Roland L — Google review
Despite the ghastly bling bling in the side chapels and altar this is a rather lovely building. The choir is magnificent on the outside and the organ is fantastic. Great stonework throughout. The small gallery of artwork is well worth a visit, some nice works including a rather homoerotic San Sebastian by El Greco which could have been painted this century.
Martin P — Google review
We enjoyed the guided tour at noon. The guide was very competent and spoke in a clear Spanish. Even if you do not speak Spanish most visitors will enjoy the tour.

Look Up! Marvel the magnificent gargoyles! And don’t forget to photograph the photographer and see the Aliens Xenomorphs!!!!
Duckula — Google review
A really unexpected surprise in Palencia. The province being the realm of the Romanesque, I expected its cathedral to be this style, too. Instead, we came across a fantastic Gothic temple which, unfortunately, we could not visit because it was being restored. We at least enjoyed the awesome exterior.

(Translated by Google) In addition to everyone being super friendly, the food is very good and the price can't be beat. Every day they have a menu with unique dishes (you can't choose between several), with a drink, bread and dessert for 6 euros. I ate cooked food that was available on Sunday and it was delicious and a good quantity; for dessert a yogurt. Of course you couldn't ask for more. Besides, if you don't feel like the dish that's on that day, you have many options at a minimum price (torreznos, mushrooms, Moorish skewers, sandwiches...). It is very central and has a good atmosphere. I recommend it 100% and I will return for sure!!

(Translated by Google) A quintessential neighborhood spot, small and family-friendly, with a wide variety of delicious meats and, what I personally find excellent, the sandwiches. The sandwiches, both to take away and to eat there, are filling and incredibly enjoyable. In addition, the various tapas dishes featuring a variety of meats typical of the area make eating here a pleasant experience. The not-so-good thing about this place is that the atmosphere (literally, smoke from the food being prepared) may not be suitable for sensitive people. It's a place that, as delicious as it is, can give the impression of being greasy and unhygienic. However, if you're not modest, it's a delicious, inexpensive, and wonderfully enjoyable place.

Restaurant
Ajo de Sopas is a stylish restaurant in Palencia that offers both local and global dishes, beautifully presented on the plate. They have a tasting menu option that showcases their creativity and unique flavors. The staff goes above and beyond to ensure all diners understand each dish, making the overall dining experience even better. The food is modern and delicious, with unexpected twists like savory waffles and spicy ice cream. Their lamb meatballs in a Thai-inspired curry are particularly flavorful.
This place is a fancy version of tapas and was amazing. The food was really unique with a very different taste from normal tapas but everything was tasty and well done. The staff was friendly and very professional, explaining all dishes and we really like that they took the time to bring us the food in a specific order and with time between dishes, sometimes things get mixed and cold but in this restaurant there was a clear care about this point. The space is very nice, with a nice outdoor.
Pedro C — Google review
A bit disappointed! Remember we had a very nice meal with tapas dishes in the terrace before. For the tasting menu, I only like the appetizers.
Esther N — Google review
Probably the best meal I've had in 3 or 4 visits. Was good first few times but has kept improving.

We were expecting more after reading some of the reviews but the menu didn't have much choice, the empenadillas were full of water and the outdoor area was quite littered with serviettes and other waste items from the tables.
Klaus M — Google review
We sat outside and enjoyed typical "para compartir" lunch. Try the empanadias 🥟 they are great.
Michael S — Google review
Went for lunch, menu very limited, mostly bar food that's dressed-up and trying to be fashionable. Service friendly but much more involved with making the scene than actually serving food. House Ribera del Duero was very good.

My husband and I are new to Palencia but heard great things about Ajo de sopas so we knew we wanted to try it. Many thanks to our server that was so patient with our lack of Spanish and went above and beyond to make sure we understood what each dish was in English. She was attentive throughout the night and made our experience even better. We did the tasting menu and were blown away by the creativity and flavors. We thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience and will most definitely be back. Thank you Ajo de sopas for the beautiful night!

A central restaurant with an outdoor terrace, an indoor tapas area and a formal restaurant hidden in the back, a traditional decor with good service, an extensive menu and excellent wine card with fair prices. We were a group of 5 that had 3 starters including a delicious revuelta de morcilla, a couple of solomillos and very tender lechezas with 2 good red from Ribeiro de Duero, waters and coffees for €50/pax.
Jesper A — Google review
No problem with the food, or the initial service at the bar. I ordered a caña zero & tortilla. I took the food out to the terrace myself, not a complaint, just a fact. Then the waiter appears & gives me my bill at the table. Again no problem with this as other establishments do this then give you a new bill as you re-order. He just stood there & made no move to leave me to have my food & drink in peace. In the end I just paid him. Very strange attitude & not encountered in any other establishment. The cana was one of the more expensive ones at €3.30 that I've had here.

Cristo Del Otero is a 69-foot cement statue of Jesus Christ, created by Victorio Macho in 1931. It stands on one of the hills surrounding the city, overlooking an old hermitage and a museum at its feet. This colossal construction dominates the entire city and is the main symbol of Palencia capital. Visitors can enjoy breathtaking views from the top and admire the impressive artistic style of this third largest Jesus statue in the world.
Stunning Panoramic Views & a Serene Atmosphere Cristo del Otero is a must-visit landmark in Palencia! The towering statue of Christ is impressive, and the panoramic views of the city from the top are absolutely breathtaking. The walk up is short but rewarding, and the peaceful atmosphere makes it a perfect spot to relax and take in the scenery. There's also a small chapel and a museum nearby that provide interesting insights into the history of the monument. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Palencia!

Went for my birthday. No table available without reservation inside but plenty outside. Had the Fish and Chips (which I'd been craving - I'm a Brit, what can I say.) Although not terribly "traditional" (Fish in pieces and not a full fillet, chips round rather that the usual oblong, no salt and vinegar, lemon or tartar sauce) the batter was outstanding and the fish fresh and tasty. Chips too. On a previous occasion I'd had the tacos, which were also pretty good (although as a Brit I can't comment on how "authentic" it was.)

Whole roasted lamb for 2 or if you are really hungry for one is worth trying. This is true if you are fan of the meat as it's more "smelly" than pork or beef.

Nice people, great atmosphere, excellent quality of the dishes. As a Vegan, i was served the most amazing oak wood grilled vegetables. Ny friends praised the seafood dishes. English and French language menus. Personnel is friendly and speaks English as well. Highly recommended.

The best place to have a delicious lunch or dinner in Palencia especially if you are looking for meats and seafood. Alberto was our server and he was extremely good and loves His job. It was such a delight to watch him and interact with him. And he gave us complimentary bites as well. The menu is available in English and French apart from Spanish. Lovely interiors which partitions well between the dining area and the bar.
