Valkenburg in 2 days

If you only have 2 days to spend in Valkenburg, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Valkenburg is a historic hill town known for its medieval castle ruins overlooking the Geul valley and its distinctive limestone (marl) quarries and caves. Visitors can explore underground tunnels with murals and sculptures, ride a cable car up the Cauberg hill, or walk the old town’s streets lined with cafés and terraces. The area is popular with cyclists and hikers thanks to its unusually hilly landscape for the Netherlands. In winter, Valkenburg’s Christmas markets in the caves and around town are a major seasonal attraction.
With favorites like Sha'aam, De Zoete Zoen, and Dionysos Valkenburg, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Dionysos Valkenburg and Koco Bistro so you can get the best taste of Valkenburg while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Caverns & Caves
Gemeentegrot, also known as Municipal Cave or Cauberg Cavern, is a historic marl quarry dating back to Roman times. It served various purposes throughout history, including as a WWII hideaway and nuclear fallout shelter. Visitors can explore its underground passages on foot or by taking a slow train tour. The cave is filled with art and hosts unique Christmas markets alongside informative exhibits about marlstone and caves at Mergelrijk.
We took the train in the cave and it was great. The guide had a lot of knowledge and explained everything we saw. Even the nuclear bomb shelter from the cold war. It was very interesting.

Wow, the cave itself is absolutely magical during the Christmas markets, it felt lovely to walk through especially towards the end of the market. The bad points : entrance was a nightmare with hoards of elderly coach trippers, the majority of the stalls sold mass produced junk rather than the hand made gifts we expected, entrance fee was 9euro per person, per cave (we do understand the reasoning for an entrance fee but seeing the quantity of visitors in just 2 hours of 1 day of the 6 week event is sickening!). I have still given the cave itself 4* because it truly is a great place to visit and after speaking to the staff we'd be inclined to visit at another time of year. The very last stall of the market you can buy personalised gifts of the stone from the caves, I wonder if this is there all year, I highly recommend.
Megan J — Google review
It’s pretty cold in the grotten. So make sure to bring a jacket/ shawl when you are visiting. The temperature was 12 degrees Celsius inside, while it was 22 degrees that day outside
Sanjaana D — Google review
The Gemeentegrot Christmas Market is definitely one of the most unique Christmas markets I have visited, simply because it takes place inside a historic cave. The cave is filled with beautifully decorated paths and lamps that create a festive and warm atmosphere. The lighting is stunning, and there are plenty of Christmas themed decorations, ornaments, and gifts on display throughout the market. The focus here is more on the shopping experience and the enchanting cave setting than on traditional festive food and drink. Food and drink options are limited, so it does not have the same cozy, culinary atmosphere as some other Christmas markets.
Dwi F — Google review
Visited on the very first day of this season! If you’ve never been here before, then it’s definitely a NO-BRAINER to visit! experience Christmas festivities in a cave set up, which is pretty unique. the cave has a pleasant cool temperature, and this one is more lively that the velvet cave. if you’re only looking for exploring and not shopping, you can easily cover this in an hour. But in most cases you’ll find yourself invested in purchasing something. Compared to Amsterdam, the prices of souvenirs aren’t too bad (some of them were even slightly cheaper). Will make a full video of my complete experience and upload it on my YouTube. Hope you find me there 👋 🎥 Pro tip: visit on weekdays, or weekend mornings. I was lucky with the crowd since i was one of the first few visitors in the cave since I visited the very first day.
Parichaya W — Google review
It is an unique location. How many underground Christmas markets have you been to? This is the only one for me. Sadly to my disappointment, while the infrastructure and safety was well managed and implemented, there was few spectacular things inside the mining shaft. It seemed like a street vendor market just moved from surface to underground. This is something quite objective, as shopping goes. But my advice is, do not expect anything more than regular street vendors.
Bart S — Google review
It was not so nice as expected, though one time visit is "okay" due to the hype but it was not Magical....... I would be neutral on recommendation, parkings are available nearby in walking distance (5-8 Minutes) for 1.90€ / hour
Manna D — Google review
This was a very unique experience but I was let down by the lack of homemade and quality Christmas decorations. It felt like most of the stuff being sold was just from action. I still enjoyed the experience and the atmosphere.

Valkenburg Castle Ruins, located in the south of Limburg, Netherlands, is a 14th-century hilltop castle built on ancient fortifications. The town of Valkenburg itself is known for its cozy and touristy atmosphere, with unique marl buildings. Despite being in ruins, the castle offers panoramic views of the surrounding Geul Valley. Visitors can explore the self-service site and enjoy depictions of its heyday.
Very well manteined. It's interesting to stroll around the ruins and admire the cleverness of Roman's civilization in making such awesome venues
Mad B — Google review
Really nice stroll throughout the castle ruins. It’s not very big and took about an hour at a very leisurely pace. Nevertheless, the ruins afford some really nice views of Valkenburg and its surroundings. Dog friendly! Kiosk is a self-pay machine with an automated entry, there is no attendant. Visit costs 10.50 euros.
Angel K — Google review
Valkenburg was a beautiful, and very touristy, little town and I wish we'd spent longer there but poor research on the part of our travel planner meant we couldn't! The town was so touristy that the car park was full so we had to sit and wait at the barrier until someone came out. We visited the castle which looked like it was magnificent at one time and certainly covered a large area but was slighted in the 17th century and then steadily plundered for stone by house builders in the town. Now it was a hugely popular family destination and when we visited there was some living history displays as well as archery and some games. We bought a combined ticket with the Velvet Caves.
Marcus H — Google review
I visited here yesterday. Can see nice view of city. Poor display of information.
J N — Google review
Nicest medieval castle i’ve seen in the Netherlands. Differently from usual, it is built in stone and on top of a hill. From there you can watch a beautiful landscape on the village of Valkenburg and the sweet hills of Limburg, not typical dutch view, it resembles more germany or Luxembourg than Holland. You can get a combined ticket with the caves that is free with the Museum Kaart
Dario — Google review
It was a great place to see the city from above. I used my museum card to enter the ruins

Only a few kilometers from Valkenburg, and such a beautiful castle and walking area. Totally worth the excursion for a one-night romantic getaway.
Brian M — Google review
Spent a very fun morning exploring here. The entire thing is self service, from buying the tickets at the automated machine to the self guided walking tour. Lots of space to spread out and explore, and various ways around. Super interesting history and we loved the "depictions" of what the castle would have looked like during its heyday. Definitely recommend. Advisory: while there was an elevator to get to the entrance level, the walking paths didn't seem very wheelchair or stroller friendly.

Fluweelengrot, also known as the Velvet Cave, is a historical site that dates back to the 12th century. It served as a refuge during World War II and features an intricate network of passageways. During the holiday season, it transforms into a charming Christmas market with an array of unique products and decorations. The cave offers a one-hour walk through its passages, which can now be reserved in advance to avoid crowds.
The Velvet Cave in Valkenburg is such a cool spot, especially during the Christmas market. Walking through the tunnels with all the lights, stalls, and decorations made it feel really festive. It’s not too big, so you can take your time and enjoy it without feeling overwhelmed. I liked how the cave setting made it feel different from a regular market. The mix of history and Christmas vibes was just perfect. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Valkenburg around the holidays.

I didn’t go in the cave because I chicken out last minute. The tour was in Dutch, but they’ll give you a piece of paper containing the explanation of the cave. You must enter with a tour guide. I used my museum card so it was free for me. You can also explore the ruins if you don’t want to visit the cave. The view from above was amazing
Ayu P — Google review
Great experience visiting a cave 25m underneath surface level. However, the instructions of the tour guide was in Dutch, although he spoke fluent English and half of the group was non-Dutch. Why can't it be in two languages (like many other guided tours at NL)? Apart from it the experience was awesome.
Nirupam B — Google review
After the castle we did struggle to find the caves for our tour but eventually found a sign and followed the route, a little way out of the town centre. We had missed our tour slot (my fault again!) but we were able to slot onto a Dutch language tour. The caves were excavated from? and as well as being a quarry were used as a chapel during the Revolutionary Wars when the French Republic tried to erode the influence of Catholicism. The tour lasted about 45 minutes and we saw some beautiful artwork done in the caves. We had an English print out of what each stop of the tour was so that certainly helped and the guide gave us a quick run down in flawless English too. The tour exited at the castle so we had done them in the wrong order!
Marcus H — Google review
I was happily surprised by these caves. We were lucky the weather was bad when we went, because of that we didn't had to wait long to get in. Really loved the whole Christmas ambiance they created inside🎄 and it was not just food what you could buy (which is often often at Christmas markets). Instead they sold a lot of nice and original Christmas things. It felt truly magical.✨ Would highly recommend
Samantha — Google review
Very interesting and informative. We did the Velvet Cave tour and the walk around the castle ruins. I formation was presented in English, which was great for my partner. It was a good visit. Be mindful of a lot of stairs if your not that mobile.
Carolina B — Google review
Amazing cave with a large number of wall paintings. In November and December there is a very nice Christmas market with a large selection of different Christmas stuff, clothes and decorations. The food is only after a while, they have some great places to eat something, there are stroopwafels and some Italian cannoli. The temperature in the caves is nice amd around 10 degrees. It is recommended to buy tickets in advance, buying tickets on spot requires you to take a very long line. If you have electronic tickets you will be inside in 10-20 minutes.

Attractiepark Kabelbaan Valkenburg offers a unique outdoor cable car experience, the only one of its kind in the Netherlands. Ascend to breathtaking heights and enjoy stunning views before diving into thrilling activities like the exhilarating toboggan run, laser tag, bounce adventure, and mini-golf. Even on a cloudy day, this attraction shines with friendly staff and plenty of fun for all ages.
A great destination for a family day out at the weekend. The theme park can only be reached by cable car. At the top there is a summer toboggan run, a minigolf course, ziplining and other small attractions. There is a self-service restaurant in the building with snacks and drinks at fair prices. I really enjoyed the trip. I was particularly pleased that I was able to pay for everything by credit card.
Oskar V — Google review
Tall, scary adventure bouncing/climbing place inside a hill. Make sure everyone stays away from the edges. The place also has a small minigolf course ✌🏻 and a cafeteria 🥪 A bunch of kids were making a huge racket at the minigolf 🏑 the place is of stone and steel so the echoes are large and loud.
Kortteli P — Google review
Visited this attraction park. Quite minimal, to be honest. Cable seats, up the hill. Using little carts to go down, and back up. Mini Golf. Was meant to be entertainment for longer, but we just whizzed through it. Online tickets were cheaper than onsite, so recommend buying online
Sander B — Google review
The cable car ride takes you smoothly up the hill, offering great views over Valkenburg and the surrounding landscape. Everything is well maintained and the staff are super friendly. They also take photographs of you during the ride, which you can purchase as a hard copy. The ticket price is around 5 euros for a round trip, which is reasonable if you just want the experience of the cable car and a quick view from above. It’s not really a place to spend hours unless you’re planning to join some activities uphill. I was expecting a bit more to see at the top, but there are just some benches and a few attractions, so I didn’t spend much time there and went straight back down.
Dwi F — Google review
As someone who is always excited to try new things, for me the skylift and tobaggun are great for me and worth my time, energy and money visiting this place. They open at 10.30AM, but I went there way too early because I wanted to avoid a long queue. So walk around Valkenburg. There are too many things to see. After strolling around, I went to this place and wait for them to open. The skylift cost you Euro 5,5 round trip and tobaggun if I remember correctly it's Euro 7,5 for two rounds.
Raidah R — Google review
It is a quite nice place to visit with kids, you can go up the hill with cable car, there are several activities such as mini golf, tubing and also sliding down the hill. I take a star from it because since the Cafe up the hill is not there anymore, there is nothing to eat or even go yo toilet when you go up, so you have to come down for it. Then you want to go and plat mini golf, then you have to go with cabin car again. So you have to! we tried to get it from a side door via hill but no chance, there are even guards there! So you have to experience the high ride again and this does not feel comfortable.
Zahra F — Google review
Quite a cute little ride. Went when it was raining, and they closed the seats of the cable ride to keep them as dry as possible when not being used. All of their side rides were closed due to weather, but that is not within their control obviously though would have been fun to try.

Dionysos, a Greek restaurant, offers an all-you-can-eat experience with 5 rounds of small plates per round. The food is plentiful and the meat dishes, especially the bifteki, are delicious. The sweets are also a pleasant surprise and the staff is friendly and polite. However, the seafood lacks taste and there can be long waits between rounds. Additionally, every meat dish has onions on top instead of parsley.
I really enjoyed my meal here! I was absolutely stuffed after and I was glad I was! I came in quite hungry and left extremely satisfied! I hope they keep it up how it is now because that and the amazing sphere there, it's an absolute delight! And very reasonably priced aswell!
DotNet — Google review
At social deal it is described as all you can eat but it is not exactly like that. You have 5 rounds consisting of 5 plates each. The plates are small like in sushi bars but still i cannot say i was hungry at the end. The food was abundant. Meat dishes were very tasty (especially the bifteki). Sweets were a nice surprise, very tasty as well. Also the personnel very friendly and polite. Only downsides, the completely tasteless seafood, the long waiting between each round and the onions on top of every meat dish (why not parsley?). Overall, i would visit this place again.

It was cheap, but definitely not the best Greek I've had. Strange choices (rice with mushroom gravy?!?). Soup was Greek style but no Greek flavour at all. Souvlaki was tough, but Gyros was tender...\

Amazing experience! What a nice pleasure to know we were their first customers of the year. They were so nice to us. Food was amazing! It is lot of food! There’s something for everyone! One tip though is not to rely on the specials on the website, was a bit disappointed when I couldn’t find what I wanted on the actual menu haha (or maybe update this? 😀) .Nevertheless, the vibe made it all worth it. We loved our waitress!!!

Chose this restaurant based on google reviews when on the road passing through and it didn’t disappoint. Food was good and service was very friendly. The only complaint I have is that every time the doors opens, and that’s very frequently, an ice cold wind blows through the restaurant. I understand, it’s January 18, it’s cold, but at least hang something like a thick curtain ! Thanks

You can always wake me up 4 some Indo food. And i definitely didn't get disappointed at all . For a drink took a #Cendol and for a #Starter some great #SateKambing. In summary, it is a must-visit for anyone looking for great Asian food, a charming atmosphere, and outstanding service.

Such a nice, warm atmosphere! We went there by recommendation and we left smiling☺️ The waiting staff were super kind and friendly. Food was delicious. We first had a street food bites sharing plate (which had all different kinds of street food in biting size) YUM! (unfortunately i forgot to take pictures because we were hungry) Then we had soups: Soto Ayam and Laksa (Laksa soup is really delicious but too spicy for me) and for desert we had crème brûlée with coconut ice cream. Everything was perfection. Would definitely want to come back again! Recommend 🫶🏼
Gözde Ç — Google review
I ordered the Soto Ayam and it was delicious. The most seasoning I’ve tasted in this country! My partner had the black angus burger and it was tasty as well. The cendol was refreshing, and the Koco Gembira was my favorite drink. Service was very friendly and attentive. They even turned on the outside patio heat just for us. Very kind. We’ll be back to try dinner. They also take credit card.

Disappointed, the reviews promised so much more. Food appeared to be pre-prepared and warmed up to serve. Green curry was nigh on inedible. Starters were adequate, nothing special. The Philippine Pork was fairly good. Coconut rice was a travesty, why not just call it what it is, slightly stodgy white rice. Also if you are only going to fill the Ginger tea glass halfway be prepared to refill it with hot water when asked, the meal cost 149 euros, providing a glass of hot water is not going to bankrupt you!

Sha'aam is a dream come true for its owners, who wanted to bring the flavors of Syria to their own restaurant. The menu features authentic Syrian dishes, with a focus on vegetarian and vegan options. The cozy and welcoming atmosphere adds to the experience, making it feel like a truly authentic Syrian dining experience. Customers have praised the generous and delicious main dishes as well as the impressive desserts.
Came here in a day with the Syrian buffet. All the food was amazing it was so hard to pick a favourite dish. It has a cozy family atmosphere and all the people running the place were extremely friendly. The drinks are also refreshing and worth trying. We finished with a Syrian tea to help digest all the tasty food.

Great local restaurant with lots of options for everyone! Especially for vegetarians. The buffet (with a set price) offers a wide selection of delicious dips, dishes and desserts to choose from. Spices and flavors are fantastic and balanced. The service is great as well: the waitress was very friendly and helpful. The chef (who’s also the owner) took a lot of pride in his work and came out to talk to us. This is what I call cooking with love! Can only recommend going here 😊

Very nice restaurant with friendly and fast service. It is abit inconvenient in terms of ordering. If you want to go to a restaurant for a big meal, it would be a perfect place, but if you want to eat a light meal, maybe not. We went there for kebab on a Thursday, and even though it was written on the menu that they have kebabs on Thursdays, they said there is a buffet and no kebabs are available. The price of the buffet is rather high as well (35 e pp), so if you do not want to eat much, ordering is so difficult. The food was nice, but again abit pricy for what you get. We liked it but if felt like too much of a hassle to eat there.

The atmosphere was cozy and beautiful, which contributed to the experience and feel of a Middle Eastern restaurant. Even the music was pleasant. A wide variety of both vegetarian and meat dishes. Incredibly tasty and the portions were quite generous. We also got some deserts and enjoyed some lemon juice with mint and Syrian tea. Would visit again! Special thanks to the hosts for their hospitality.

The food here is absolutely amazing, and the people are such a sweet family. The whole atmosphere reminded me so much of my home and culture, which made the experience even more special. What I loved most is that this kind of food is so rare to find in restaurants, especially being far away from home and my family. You can find the food as a buffet which i think is amazing since you can eat as much as you want from different foods. I truly loved everything about it! I came all the way from Germany and will definitely come again and tell more people about it.

We came here based on the previous reviews and it did NOT disappoint!! Lovely food, freshly made and very tasty! The couple was very hospitable! P.S: Please ask for their housemade Sambal on the side (It’s mind blowing and spicy too)

Pommes Valkenburg is a charming spot that offers a unique take on the traditional Dutch "frieten." The owners are known for their friendly and engaging service, making it a must-visit for those who appreciate delicious dishes. Visitors have praised the top-notch service and excellent food and drinks, with highlights including house-made croquettes featuring local sausage, sauerkraut, and cheese.
Delicious fries in the city center. I ordered the fries with pulled pork, they are natural potatoes (not frozen). The service is also top notch, they also speak English and German. They do everything they can to make you happy.

I wanted to use a toilet, they asked if we will eat there. We said no, but we are willing to pay some drinks in order to allow me to go to the toilet. They have sent us away. Hospitality at it’s poorest. A big NO GO

The burger was very good the meat was juicy and overall vegetables were good. Though for the price and the 30~ mins it brings contrast to the experience

About a 35-minute wait and lowkey pricey for the portion size, but the homemade sauces were absolute bangers

The owner was very wholesome and sincere. The food is also pretty reasonable compared to near by restaurants. I am surprised that this place is not popular.

Nice place with an other view on French fries. The offer is interesting and gives you another taste on something simple and traditional as are Dutch "frieten". The owners are friendly and engaged. A must try if you like these dishes. We will definitely return.

Rodelbaan Valkenburg is a thrilling hillside activity center featuring two long and twisting toboggan tracks, offering an exhilarating experience for visitors. Situated near the Wilhelmina Tower, this high-speed toboggan run provides stunning views of the Valkenburg area. Visitors can purchase tickets for a lift up the hill, which includes both ascending and descending trips. The facility accepts card payments and offers the option to buy photos taken during the ride.
Super fun place definitely worth a visit! We had a great time here. The website wasn’t in English, and even after trying a few things like Google Translate, I couldn’t really figure it out. But once we got there, everything made sense. The whole place is really well-designed. No wonder kids don’t want to leave they covered a hole inside the mountain and turned it into a huge bouncing area made of nets. It was such a cool and unique idea! The Rodelbahn was probably my favorite part. It was €5 for two rides, which felt really fair. Everything was modern, clean, and safe. However you do need to take a cable car to reach the Rodelbahn, and that’s a separate fee but honestly, it was totally worth it. The ride up was nice, and coming back down gave us an amazing view over Valkenburg. There were no lines when we went, which was a big plus. Now, here’s the funny part: they took pictures of us during the ride without telling us (sneaky move 😂), and then displayed them at the exit to sell €4 each. Honestly, I’m amazed by their strategy super clever way to make extra cash without asking. I just wish they’d snapped the photo on the way down so the background would look better. But hey, gotta give them credit for creativity, even if a heads-up before the ride would’ve been nice. I don't mind. Overall, I was super impressed with the creativity of the place. Some people might not love the surprise photo thing, but I thought it was funny and harmless. Would definitely go back!

An exciting ride to experience in Netherlands, though it’s short compared to Swiss but it’s a nice experience. When we went in September last week the parking was closed . But since very few people were there It was no hassle . Ticket is 5euro for two rounds. There are very beautiful places and arrangements for small picnic and also kids playing area . With family you can spend a nice time here. You must check the weather conditions before visiting as if it rains ride is closed.

We went there 16 august 2025, 1 ride is 1 coin. You can buy coin in the machine. 1-3 coin @5€, more than 4coins @4€. The ride is 2x, you go down in the same place you start, i did wrong hahaha. It was fun.. They'll close the arena if the weather is bad, rain.

MergelRijk - the nicest cave in Limburg is an underground marl cavern in Valkenburg that offers a fascinating experience for visitors. The caves feature sculptures, fossils, and rock carvings, providing insight into the region's history from prehistoric times to the present day. Visitors can explore 3D cave paintings, sand sculptures, and participate in a fun treasure hunt.
What a fantastic, interactive and educational place this is for both adults and kids. Here one learns a lot about the limestone cave/quarries of the area as well as seeing artefacts and fossils from dinos and other animals. The 3D paintings are the cherry on the cake. A must see if you're in Zuid Limburg.
Ryan B — Google review
At first, I thought this was overpriced, but it's quite extensive and interesting, so by the time we finished our visit, I was satisfied that I had not paid too much. It's a good mixture of informative history (though this is all a replica of Gemeentegrot and some of the other sections of the marl mines) and entertainment, and even includes some fun interactive displays. It would be a good place to bring children, I think.
Eric S — Google review
Overall a great experience. Loads of information of the local area with ability to create your souvenir with the stone!!!! The puzzle book was great to keep kids engaged and learn along the way!!! 3D photoscape was great to have some fun. English information was very minimal and overall experience feels pricey !! Nonetheless a place worth visiting!!
Rammurthy M — Google review
Super cool place to visit. Also great to do on a hot day, because the caves are nice and cool. Plus you get to try your hand at carving the sandstone yourself which was very fun.
Tori L — Google review
Awesome experience! Very fun to be walking around a few feet underground and learning a thing or two about how the mineworkers got to work there. There's plenty to learn about dinosaurs (although some information is a bit outdated). The sculptures in the walls made by university students, about ten years ago, and on the displays are absolutely amazing to look at and there's some interactivity as well! You can carve out your own piece of rock and there's a section where you get to draw on the walls (if you dare to enter as it is dark and spooky!). Definitely recommended. It is quite the walk up the hill from Valkenburg, so I recommend leaving on time. Sometimes if you're a little earlier that's okay too.
Colin ( — Google review
Third visit over several years, the whole attraction has had an update recently I think. Lots to see, not too crowded. Well worth a visit give yourself a good couple of hours at the least.
Joanna K — Google review
It is comparable to Maastricht underground, almost the same but there are many statues inside, small museum, and of course - the 3D room, BUT: there was unbreathable air, no ventilation, stench, 3D paintings were faded, almost unusable for good pictures, no English notes at exponats, I think the ads for this place are exaggerated, the staff was kind but the price and the overall feeling was not worthy, paid parking at the city or at front entrance, wc available
Marek S — Google review
Very nice place to visit with kids there is a tour where the kids leave in an educational and playful way a lie of the local history. All the local mining great explained and a lot of information about dinosaurs. The kids can search for remaining of dinosaurs, they will find thoots of ancient sharks in the ground. What also very funny to do is to carve a piece of soft stone into your favourite designs. The kids can bring that to home of they like. Since valkenburg is a very touristic city parking can be challenging even while there is a parking at tbe the opposite side of the road. Don't worry. Valkenburg is a small place so tbe other parking are at walking distance we had a very good afternoon with the kids over here.

The Roman Catacombs in Valkenburg are an underground replica of ancient Roman burial chambers, featuring frescoes and statues. Open since 1910, the site offers daily tours at specific times, with additional tours during the summer months. Visitors can expect a temperature of 12 degrees Celsius inside the catacombs. While tours are conducted only in Dutch, English stories are available for self-reading. Some visitors suggest that investing in modern audio tour guides would enhance the experience for foreign tourists.
This is an interesting visit. The site is only accessible through a one hour guided tour, in Dutch. It’s an identical replica of the catacombs in Rome, but in shortened space. Don’t get me wrong this place is still massive. Be sure to wear pants and a sweater or jacket. It’s an an old mine so it’s cold and dark in there.
Refcon — Google review
The attraction is well setup and the experience inside the cool dark cave is special. However two things to mention. There was no English option for the tour (they offer English documents to read, but not easy to read in dim conditiins). Secondly and more importantly, this is a complete replica done in the early 1900s of a roman catacomb, so everything inside is not authentuc or roman but 'fake". The world 'Museum' is hence incorrect, it is a bettrr understandood as reconstruction. Price is 16 eur for an hour.
Stephen M — Google review
This experience was pretty cool for me and my friends! I found out that it was a replica but it was still really cool to tour. The tour was in Dutch and as Americans, me and my friends were fine with it as we are tourists and don’t expect anyone to cater to us as far as language goes! The tour guide and staff were sweet and the tour was a little over an hour. The different rooms were cool to checkout and the artwork was really nice. I highly recommend buying your tickets in advance just to be on the safe side and wear a nice jacket as it’s cold down there!
Ms. K — Google review
We had to take a guided tour to see the catacombs. The tour was mandatory but the explanations were not in English - only Dutch. There was only a brochure to read. Worse, the guide left out several parts, including the most important ones, leaving us unable to explore or learn about them ourselves as we were not supposed to leave the tour. Considering the entrance fee of 16 euros, I did not expect this answer: we were short on time and could not see some parts.👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻
FARNAZ M — Google review
Nice tour in catacomben 1:1 replicated from those in Rome. Some great restauration has been done and the biblical depictions were worth the tour alone in my opinion. Pretty cold and moist, so be prepared, also not accessible with wheelchair etc
SGP V — Google review
The Valkenburg Catacombs are a full-on replica of the ones in Rome, copied down to tiny details. Long corridors, carved chapels, paintings — it really feels like stepping into the real thing. It’s impressive, a bit morbid, and very dark. You get a little lantern to carry, which is fun, but also a reminder to stick close to the group or you’ll lose your way fast. It’s cold underground, so bring a coat. There’s no English-speaking guide, only an information sheet in English, so most of the storytelling is lost if you don’t understand Dutch. Kids won’t enjoy it — mine didn’t. It’s slow and heavy. Better for adults, history lovers, or religious visitors who’ll find meaning in the atmosphere. Staff are friendly, the place is well cared for, and the detail really does transport you. Not a cheerful outing, but if you’re into history, religion, or unusual sites, this is one of the most striking experiences you’ll find in Limburg.

Smaakmakerij Fer Botterweck is a delightful gem in Limburg, renowned for its homemade ice cream that boasts an impressive array of flavors. From the rich Chocolate Pure to the refreshing Strawberry and exotic Mango, there's something for everyone. The generous scoop sizes are sure to surprise you! You can even place special orders for your favorite flavors to enjoy at home—just remember to plan ahead.
Visited Botterweck, a charming café nestled in the heart of Valkenburg. This delightful spot offers a wide range of options, from lunch dishes and ice cream to coffee accompanied by a delicious breakfast and Limburg pastries. Heeding local advice, we indulged in the regional specialty, Vlaai. We sampled two varieties: one with chocolate pasta and jam, and another with passion fruit and slagroom. Both were exquisite, striking a perfect balance of sweetness without being overly rich. Strategically located in Valkenburg's center, Botterweek is regarded as one of the finest cafés in the area. It’s the ideal place to unwind and savor the flavors of this picturesque city in the Netherlands. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Valkenburg.

Though they have a lovely terrace looking at the old church in the town square, we chose to enjoy the retro aesthetics of the inside. The two ladies who waited on us greeted us with big smiles and kind voices as they explained the different pies that were available... we finally decided on the apricot, custard, and creme pie to go with our cappuccinos. Nestled in the charming town of Valkenburg, Fairytale Forest is a delightful theme park that brings beloved fairy tales to life through animated displays and engaging attractions. With two convenient entrances and nearby parking options, accessing this whimsical destination is a breeze. The park features an enchanting blend of classic story exhibitions alongside family-friendly rides and playgrounds, making it an ideal spot for families with young children.
Fantastic fairy tale forest for small kids. Mine age 1 3 5 had the best day ever here. Plenty of fairytales visualized. Small but nice attractions, a large playground, plenty of pick nick possibilities, a basic fast-food restaurant, small animal farm and a cave system you can visit. The park has a 90's feel to it but that did not bother anyone really. You don't go here to be amazed as adult. Only downside is that the park is located on the flank of a hill, meaning with a buggy you have a lot of pushing to do :-)
Vincent W — Google review
We used this as a pitstop for our 2 year old from Netherlands to Germany. It was nicely positioned in the middle of our trip. The park is a mix of fairy tale exebition attractions and fiar attractions. The price was cheap and the employees were approachable and kind. There are a mix of reviews about the park being outdated and behind on maintenance. While you see this at some of the fairytale exebitons, you also see others that have been recently touched up and renewed. It didn't bother us at all. We also ate here for lunch and while the menu is simple it was well prepared and timely delivered. We bought our tickets online which was quick and easy. Special attention is required at the moment for parking be sure to park at 'Geulpark Valkenburg' from there it's a 7 minute walk up a small hill to the park entrance. This is paid parking where we spend about 5 euro for a 3 hours or so.

If you go there with discount tickets, then is nice. I think nice for younger children. Many places telling stories but think maybe ore interesting for children 4-7 around? Some places to play, is funny for younger children. But in general is nice for some activities in this town.

I accidentally hike near this creepy park to reach Radelbaan. The park was closed and no one was there, only a fenced area with a bulldozer nearby.
Ayu P — Google review
Parking was a little confusing. There is no parking next to the park. There is a big parking lot downhill but it was quite crowded. Inside the park is more suitable for younger kids. Our 10 year old got bored. There are not a lot of food options in the cafeterias. Around half of the attractions were under maintenance. All in all, it is not a waste of money if you are passing by but not good enough if you come a long way just for this.
Bülent K — Google review
Small, little outdated theme park. Lots of opportunities for smaller children to play
Ferdy P — Google review
We enjoyed this fun park very much. The price for value ratio is very high hence the high score. We have a 5 yrs and 7 yrs old, they had a lovely time. What we like: + nice environment up on the hill, beautiful setting + all the rides are ok for the kids to go on their own as long as they are 120cm+- + the park is not too big not too small, just about right size for us that not too tired walking around + staff are very friendly, kids got a few solo runs on their own What can improve: - the stories houses indeed creepy and not very clean All in all, we would recommend for family have similar age group kids for the park. We would definitely go again.
Y Y — Google review
Nice place. Not the best , but definitely good park. Price is reasonable, however absolutely awful Parking experience. The Fairy tale park has it's own parking place, but it is really small and the nearest public parking is about 1 km away, but you will have to go real hiking with small children. What really upset me, they charge everybody same price from 80cm and above. My son is 1 year old, but they measured him 80.5cm. I was told that there are carousels for such small children where I could accompany him. The suprprise, I was refused to go with him and he is definitely too small for such things. He was not able to visit one single attraction. I think charging 1 year old babies full price is a big shame!

If you are looking for the old cozy, classic and atmospherical Golden Leeuw restaurant, unfortunately, you will not find it here anymore. My family and I have been going to this restaurant for 9 years, until today, it was a comfortable, welcoming and delicious restaurant. Today we ordered 2 beers from the tap, we pointed and confirmed that it was from the tap. They brought us 2 bottled beers (both worth about 4€), we specified that we ordered something different, to which they said that they didn’t have any left, and that it was the same (it isn’t) nevertheless, we ordered something different yet they said that they couldn’t take it back as “They opened the bottle”. In the end, we payed 8€ for 2 beers we didn't order, and didn't drink.

I visited the Kippenbar Vesting Grill with my family and had a pleasant time. This eatery offers affordable prices and serves delicious, uncomplicated food in a casual setting. I ordered a whole roasted rooster with two servings of rice and French fries, accompanied by a delectable mushroom sauce. The bill came to 32 euros, including drinks. I thoroughly enjoyed the simplicity and tastiness of the dishes offered at this restaurant.
The food was good , the taste was nice , server was very friendly , unlike oher reviews that say there was screaming in the kitchen this was not the case? Seems like they made some changes for the better. If these accusations are even real or realistic. The chicken was cooked to perfection. Juicy with tons of taste, I highly recommend the mushroom sauce!

Worst service I've ever had ever. DON'T GO HERE. Unfriendly and rude woman asking us what to eat before we were even had time to read menu. Super unfriendly and stressed out. Told us we have to hurry ordering because they close soon. That miss needs to stop working in hospitality. The food was cold, unseasoned, dry and I think that most of the ingredients are either canned or prepared days before. 15€ for a old and saggy dry dish. When we wanted to pay we chose debit card (because we saw our neighbours paying with card as well). When we wanted to pay, they told us "only cash". After we said we want to pay debit she gave us her terminal to insert the card ourselves. When we tried it didn't work. So we end up paying cash. Which is not a problem. But the way you get treated in this "restaurant" is just not worth any penny. I hope everybody reading this before they made the terrible mistake to eat here.

Overall the worst experience in my life never go there again, they need health and safety and closing down, worst “restaurant” in the world Disgusting wouldn’t go there again even if I was paid. DIABOLICAL

Unfortunately I have to confirm what other reviews say. The lady running the place does not seem to grasp the concept of awkwardness. She is constantly shouting at the staff, making the whole experience very very awkward and unpleasant. The food was ok and the price was right. I want to say this to the young girl who is working there currently (Lunch shift, 13 July 2025) and served us today: you can leave, its ok, that place is what is known as a toxic work environment, and luckily it is not the norm. Just find something else.

We had lunch here. Was comfortable refuge to sit from busy Christmas markets. Service was nice and quick. The chicken is good, fries passable. Overall for the price in middle of Valkenberg we enjoyed our meal.

The food was horrible and the prices are to high , 10 Euros for a stew that looks like my making from the last day . When couple meters from here u can eat for 15 Euros a michelin star rated food.

I remembered this place from four years ago, where I had the best soup ever. Went back today for lunch and they surpassed my expectation again... Across the street you can learn about the history of Valkenburg and it's caves. Highly recommended!

Food is very tasty and both the inside restaurant and the covered terrace have a nice atmosphere. Friendly and attentive staff. When we stay at Landal next we will definitely go here again.

Not awful, but for sure overpriced. Quality of some of the food turned out quite disappointing. The Spare ribs are decent and the overall ambience & service is OK.

Good restaurant. Food was very nice. Service was a little slow at some moment but it was very busy. The whole restaurant was full so that was understandable.

Fast friendly service earns it four stars the prices are a little bit more than if you walk into town but if you're staying here it's a nice option, a very cute place, with satisfactory food.

(Translated by Google) I was sitting outside on the terrace, just after lunch rush hour on Tuesday. I was the only one there, so it was pretty quiet. There was a lot of noise coming from the park, because the motorized lawn mowers were going into turbo mode. The effect of sitting at a bungalow park, I think. I'm sitting there myself and it looked quite pleasant here. The beer on tap was cold and tasty. The asparagus soup was thin and salty but had a good taste. The soup was accompanied by a slice of white, nothing special but not dried out either. The service was nice and reasonably quick. The music was of the type of café, a bit fast, saxophone, synthesizer, you know the drill. Tuesday (today) and Saturday it's Spare Ribs Night here (they do close for the night), so maybe more of a Spare Ribs Evening. But that sounds less of course. Maybe I'll come here to eat a rib if I don't feel like going to the center of the village. Together with the friendliness, that is the biggest asset of this shop: close to the Landal park. Will definitely come here again for a cold beer! Edit: when more people came in at 3 o'clock it became a bit more cozy!

(Translated by Google) We had delicious sauerkraut yesterday. Highly recommended. The staff is very friendly and nothing is too much trouble. The Kwaremont on tap was delicious. Highly recommended. We'll definitely be back.
