The Aberfeldy Watermill Bookshop & Cafe is a charming establishment located in an old watermill, offering a unique and picturesque setting for book lovers and food enthusiasts. It has received accolades for its impressive collection of Scottish books and is renowned as the largest bookshop in the Highlands. Visitors can explore the well-preserved internal machinery while browsing through an interesting selection of books. The cafe below serves British and Scotch cuisine, making it a delightful spot for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
Lovely selection of books - both fiction and non-fiction. Nice to see different and quirky Scottish books for sale too. The gallery is worth a look, though prices are quite expensive. The cafe is also lovely. Unfortunately, no dogs are allowed inside the bookshop or cafe, so we were unable to stay as long as we'd have liked.
Jo M — Google review
Nicely situated bookshop with cafe downstairs which also has a lovely outside seating area good range of teas too. Nice place to sit though lunch menu is quite limited. Though better to do a few things well than over stretch yourself!
Linda J — Google review
Interesting little place with great cafe downstairs and a wonderful bookshop upstairs. Locally made cakes and slices in the cafe. Highly recommend the carrot cake. (They only keep one slice in the display fridge but there is always more in the kitchen). Goooood coffee! Cosy seating available inside or if its a lovely day, there is seating outside in the pretty garden. Friendly staff and a wide variety of books to choose from catering for all ages and most interests. Old workings of the mill still on display and very pretty location.

We have always made a point of visiting the Watermill Bookshop & Cafe when in Aberfeldy. You can always guarantee that you will receive a warm welcome in a very warm atmosphere. Not just because of the wood burner, but because the staff and building make it a great place to provide this vibe. We ordered tea and coffee with gluten free chocolate cake. We couldn’t have been more happy, everything was great and the chocolate cake was massive ! The book shop is amazing with a huge selection of books from Scotland which is a passion of mine and something that we Scots should not be ashamed off. Why does Scotland not do this more and stock just stuff from Scotland? The artwork was interesting with some amazing etchings , other work, well not so much. A great place with great staff in a great building, see you soon.
DOVETAIL — Google review
Wonderful selection of books, fresh sizable scones, and charming dogs. They kindly request you do not let your dog foul in the garden.

Wonderful food and great book selection. Speedy and friendly service. Thanks James! BEST HOT CHOCOLATE EVERR!!
James O — Google review
Bookshop excellent. Food looked good in the cafe but we never got to try it. We waited as instructed by the fireplace for a table. They led the people directly Infront of us to a table so knew we were next. The next free table came free and they completely skipped us in the queue and led the people behind us to the table. We were too polite to kick up a stink so just left. The young lad did it and i think he might have been oblivious, the lady clocked it but didn't say anything. Neither did the rude people behind us who knew exactly what happened. I felt really embarrassed. It's worth a visit I'm sure it doesn't happen often. But kind of ruined our little visit. We were really looking forward to it as well.
P M — Google review
A story of two halves. The bookshop is fab, a real treasure trove and terrific for browsing. The cafe food was good but even though it was quiet the service was abysmal. Sadly this means I won't be back.

The Black Watch Memorial in Perthshire is a significant attraction, featuring a striking statue of a soldier in the original Black Watch Regiment uniform. Situated near the Wade Bridge, it offers an excellent spot for photography and is popular among history enthusiasts. The memorial holds historical significance as it marks the location where the German offensive was halted in 1914. Visitors can also enjoy the surrounding area, including the Riverside walk, putting green, benches, and Aberfeldy Golf Course.
Everytime I am in Aberfeldy I visit the Black Watch memorial. It gives excellent views of the River Tay and Wade Bridge.
Colin O — Google review
Lovely Historical Memorial in a Beautiful Setting Located beside Wade’s Bridge and overlooking the River Tay, the Black Watch Memorial is a powerful tribute to one of Scotland’s most legendary regiments. The imposing cairn, crowned with a statue of Private Farquhar Shaw in full Highland regalia, makes for a touching and evocative sight. Historically rich and architecturally refined, the memorial marks the first official muster of the Black Watch regiment in 1740 and was unveiled in 1887 to mark Queen Victoria’s Jubilee—crafted with local pride through community funding. Nearby benches make it a peaceful spot to pause and reflect, especially with views that stretch across the Tay and into the hills beyond.

Wonderful Memorial beside an ancient bridge over the river Tay at Aberfeldy. One minor but glaring error is some clever clogs put a lightning conductor cable down the front of the memorial instead of at the rear where few people would see it.
Neil — Google review
I witnessed a magnificent ceremony, honoring the memory of the Aberfeldy Black Watch and its first muster in the 1700s. A full band of bagpipes and a reverend with a sermon, everything was amazing!
Rose A — Google review
Walked down to the river, and came across the Black Watch Memorial statue. Surrounded by beautiful views. Close to Victoria Park and Aberfeldy Golf Course. A few benches to sit on and admire the countryside. Worth a wee visit
Anne H — Google review
Stumbled across the Black Watch memorial travelling through. The bridge at Aberfeldy first caught our attention which was built in the 1700's also. The town was immaculate. Only complaint was why didn't they put the lightening earth strap down the back of the statue 🤔

Set alongside the River Tay and Wade's Bridge it's in a beautifully scenic location. There is a plaque explaining about the Black Watch etc.

It's exactly what you should expect from a pub away from a big town centre. Very friendly staff, very fast service, nice food, good portions, right volume level music, nothing pretentious, and very relaxed. I would definitely come back, next time back to Aberfeldy. Thanks Scott and Hamish.

Amazing wee pub tea we had in here! Wait time was so quick, food tasted great & we were less than £40 for 2 adults & 2 kids all with drinks and a side of garlic bread. We left a personal belonging at the table and staff were great keeping it safe until i arrived to collect where they were ready & waiting for me. 100% be back here next time i’m in aberfeldy.

The Birks Cinema has been showing films, both new and old, for a long time. It is also the home of the Aberfeldy Film Society, which arranges screenings, film festivals, and other activities. This cinema offers an intimate atmosphere where you can enjoy movies with friends. The comfortable seats are free from distracting elements like smelly food or people using their phones. Additionally, there is a fantastic cafe in the lobby that serves substantial meals as well as cake, coffee, and wine.
An excellent location to watch the Six Nations rugby, unfortunately the scoreline did not stay 0-0 for very long. It was free to watch, as all they ask is for a donation. The Birks offered nachos and breakfast rolls for their halftime warm meals. I'll definitely be visiting again.
David M — Google review
My partner and I visited here for the first time today. The staff were absolutely wonderful so welcoming and friendly. There was a girl who had only started, who provided such a lovely service to us. The food was absolutely phenomenal. I got a cheese and onion chutney panini and I genuinely think it's one of the nicest panini's I have ever had, my partner had the soup of the day which he said was lovely. They even brought a bowl of water for the dog which was very kind and appreciated. Highly recommend visiting here for a coffee or quick bite to eat.

We were staying near Aberfeldy, and decided to take the kids to watch Moana 2 at the Birks Cinema. Last year my wife took them to watch Wonker, and spoke highly of the experience. We needed lunch and the team was great, and the food was good and reasonably priced too.

Fantastic staff and great food. Christina the manageress was really friendly and helpful. The coffee is great we loved the breakfast

This cinema is a little gem of a find, because of its size it gave a very intimate feeling of watching with friends, the seats are so comfortable, no smelly hot dogs or popcorn no one sitting playing on their phones. There's a great cafe in the foyer where you can have something substantial to eat or cake and coffee or wine. To me it was the best visit to the cinema in many many years. Its a long way for us but worth every mile and the scenery through the Sma Glen is spectacular. We shall be back for sure, loved it ❤ The film we saw was Fisherman's Friend's it was fantastic.
Jo T — Google review
A lovely old Art Deco building in Aberfeldy brought up to date inside with a light, colourful and open interior. The cafe is lovely and the staff were very friendly on my visit, plus there was a good range of fresh cakes and bakes to choose from.

Small local community cinema.... Which is a concept I was previously not familiar with. Very pleasant experience with exceptionally friendly staff, a comprehensive cafe and the ability to take drinks into the small auditorium (which nonetheless had a full sized screen and surround sound). Brilliant. Would definately be a regular patron if I didn't live 250 miles away!
Nigel C — Google review
Beautiful cinema with old school picture house vibes but is actually a modern facility at the heart of the town centre. Close to all the main shops, pubs and takeaways too, it offers a great range of current films as well as less mainstream ones....well worth a visit! Baking in the cafe is clutch!!!

An amazing time white water rafting with the whole family, made even better by our instructor, Jack. He was clear, informative, and made safety a top priority without taking the fun out of the experience. Jack’s knowledge of the river and calm, confident instructions kept us comfortable and engaged the entire trip. You could tell he genuinely cared about the group having a great time while staying safe. Highly recommend—especially if you get Jack as your guide!

Amazing! Food was fantastic, staff friendly, cute little spot. I picked up a cutting /charcuterie board even.... Gets busy when the kids are let out of school, but shows how good the food is! Great price, highky recommend the NY filling

Avoid. The worst fish and chips myself and mum have ever had. The batter was undercooked, thick and mushy inside. The fish didn’t taste fresh at all. Chips were undercooked and to top it off our stomachs started cramping and we felt quite unwell after eating here. Save your hard earned cash for somewhere other than The Plaice In The Square.

the sausage in the sausage supper was so poor. i could easily tell it was frozen and re-frozen numerous times with hiw extremly poor the quality was. chips were rock solid outside and a mystery mush on the inside. avoid this chippy at all costs.

The fish was the best fish I’ve had! Chips were great as well but my friend got vegetable pakora and it was very dry.

Fish was excellent freshly cooked when we ordered, great crispy batter, nice chips. Really good size portions. Highly recommended

Avoid ! The worst chips I’ve ever ordered in me life. They had obviously been made earlier in the day and reheated when we placed our order. The chips were over cooked, cold and tasteless. I had a white pudding and chips and even the white pudding was terrible. I don’t like food waste but had to throw it away.
Jeremy G — Google review
Ordered some pizza and they were really nice! But the trouble is, I think despite clarifying during placing the order, they got one of the pizza orders wrong 😅 it was too late to do anything by the time I noticed and didn’t really mind but would’ve been better if it hadn’t happened at all :)

This charming establishment not only offers mouthwatering dishes but also creates a warm and inviting ambiance for its guests. The food is outstanding, ensuring that diners leave nothing unfinished on their plates.
Came for dinner and both had really great meals. I had the tagliatelle gamberoni which was the best I’ve had- really light and fresh, sauce was delicious. The staff were incredibly welcoming and attentive and the atmosphere was really nice. We popped in on a Monday night and it was pretty busy so probably best to book a table. Would definitely come back if we were in the area again!!

We made the booking at noon time, tried to book a table at 7 pm on 29 May; later on, we got a call at around 4 something , the staff told us they are busy, table only available at 7:30. And again, when we were setting off to the restaurant, another call received, we were told our table is only available at 7:45pm. We had no choice as it’s too late to book another restaurant. We arrived on time, and ordered our food ASAP, we were all starving!! Sadly, The restaurant was busy, we finally had our starters at 8:30! and main courses at 9:00pm! During the wait, our next table, who came around 10-15 mins later then us, enjoying all their meal before us. I looked at the staff, they have no response, no apologies, no comforting, we were just being ignored! I really want to ask them for a few pieces of bread to fill our stomachs! How starved me and my kids were! In my opinion, If you are too busy , it’s better to turn down our booking! Staff actually were generally nice , but that would be even better if they are more attentive and sensible to customer’s needs .

Great little place that might be somewhat deceiving. It doesn’t look like much from the outside but stepping in you are instantly welcomed with a modern, warm restaurant. I had the lamb main which was delicious and my girlfriend had the prosciutto pizza. I tried some of her pizza and it was also great. Her one criticism was it would have been good if it had a little balsamic vinegar on it (just a personal preference). Service was all very friendly. It did take a while but we felt that was because they were focusing on each table cooking from scratch and so the quality was worth it. Great place and I would definitely visit again.
S W — Google review
My family and i dined here on a busy Monday night. The food was tasty, hot and served in generous portions. Three of us had lovely pizzas and my son had a freshly cooked bowl of spaghetti Bolognese. One of our party is dairy intolerant and was able to swap out the mozzarella on her pizza. The service was fast, efficient and friendly. The atmosphere was good. The restaurant was full but not too noisy. We shared two starters and had four mains with only one of our party drinking alcohol. The total cost was £127, which included £4.50 for a small bottle of Highland Spring still water and £3 to swap out mozzarella for goat's cheese on one of the pizzas.

We had planned to eat at another restaurant in town but found there was no table available and it struck us as a bit trendy for us anyway. So we walked to The Black Watch and enjoyed a delicious meal in the Croft Restaurant. We were seated quickly and two staff members took care of our drink and food needs. As the place filled up, those who did not have reservations were treated politely and told they could go to the pub next door to wait for a table to open--while that sounds like a normal response, we found many places in Scotland just turned people away. My steak and ale pie was savory and served with fresh vegetables as well as the chips. My husband said his macaroni and cheese was very good, as well. After dinner we stopped into the pub for a drink and the bartender was quite friendly. It was a pleasant atmosphere and everyone was nice.

Would recommend! Quite quiet for a Friday evening in September but couldn’t fault the food. Staff were very friendly and service was great! Our local Indian in Hertfordshire is good, the food here was as good but bigger portions for your money. We all had starters; two had onion bhajis (4), one had vegetable samosas (3) and one prawn puri which was packed with prawns. Mains: 2 biryanis, both delicious, 1 Madras and 1 Chicken Shishlak. We had ordered Bombay aloo and Sag aloo as we normally do but we all ate our fill and had so much left over we asked to have it bagged up and took it back to our holiday cottage.

Amazing food!!! Lamb madras chicken shashlik pilea rice keema and pashwari nans, very fresh salad, chicken cooked to perfection, moist and very tasty, sauces excellent, generous portions compared to Pitlochry establishments...

Real, authentic Indian restaurant with good sized portions for hungry eaters. Prices are down to Earth and portions are quite filling. Place needs a bit of a facelift but ither then that we enjoyed the food and the attentive service.

We enjoyed a lot our meal at Chillies. We had balti chicken, balti prawn, with cauliflower side, garlic naan and rice. They were all delicious. The sauces are rich of flavour without overdoing it. The person who served us was very nice and attentive. Recommended!

Popped in for a meal with friends while staying in Aberfeldy. Food was fantastic, and service excellent. The Captain Patila curry was superb if you like a bit of heat.
