Portalegre Castle, constructed in the 13th century, features well-preserved walls and towers that provide visitors with a glimpse into its impressive history. The castle offers breathtaking panoramic views of the picturesque countryside and the charming city of Portalegre.
Portalegre Castle Type: castle Time spent: 25 min Visits: free [at this moment] Parking: not available Languages: English, Portuguese Current situation: the castle is under reconstruction, but one of the towers can be visited, and you can see the castle from it. The Castle of Portalegre stands out over the older part of the town because of its imposing location over a higher area. The earliest historical references date from the reign of Dom Afonso III of Portugal, the king who conceded the first charter to Portalegre in 1259, which gave it the status of vila (town) and made it the capital of a new autonomous municipality. Starting in 1290, King D. Dinis reinforced the castle and built the city walls, motivated by the increased importance of the town. The castle was listed as a National monument in 1922.

If one is fond of architecture, then you must, because the contemporary wood intervention is magnificent, otherwise the castle ruins are not remarkable at superficial glance.
Alexandre P — Google review
It was closed when I went there. In the website and Google said it was open. The only thing telling about the real schedule was a small paper at the door.
Francisco C — Google review
It's somewhat forgotten and poorly maintained although it has. A nice atmosphere, the wooden structure takes away a lot of the magic from the castle itself, sadly. It's not possible to climb the towers although they should provide a very good view overall, but since there are no safety measures its not allowed to climb them to see. They could have built some railings for safety along the walls instead of the wooden structures that they currently have. Good to pass by, but overall could be better.
Tom R — Google review
Closed when we were in town, not sure of opening hours so we stopped by on the off chance. Castle seems in ok condition although what is visible of it seems like it needs more care and attention.
John V — Google review
Not comparable with any of the other Alto Alentejo region castles. Not well preserved and unfortunately altered with a wooden structure attached. Even the exhibits inside are not interesting at all. Good thing is it's free
Daniel B — Google review
Despite the announcement of free entry, we found the Castle closed, we believe that due to renovations, or because it was a public holiday...it doesn't say anything.
Dário S — Google review
Closed, not very exciting from outside. The old city is in poor conditions. Not worth to go up ther.

Museu José Régio is a captivating museum located in the former residence of the renowned 20th-century poet José Régio. The museum showcases his extensive collection of religious art, antiques, and personal memorabilia. Visitors can explore a diverse range of mainly religious paintings and sacred art acquired and collected by José Régio himself. Additionally, the museum holds a remarkable collection of Portuguese ceramics and textiles, reflecting the rich craft associated with the town.
Grew up next to this museum, only had to jump the wall. The best childhood memories ever. Have not visited for over 30 years will be there in September

(Translated by Google) Wonderful experience, with sacred art that was purchased and collected by José Régio himself. We had an excellent guided tour, with a lady who was very knowledgeable about all the details of the history of the House-Museum. I recommend the visit. Recomendo a visita

I loved going here so badly, it was so fun to explore the place and the lady that explained everything to us needs a raise ASAP, literally the nicest tour guide I've ever seen and she answered all of my questions! As a art student, visiting this place is a MUST for art enthusiastics like me. A solid 10/10, a museum full of story and things to see!

(Translated by Google) The collection of sacred art pieces, furniture and other pieces that José Régio managed to put together is incredible (only part of it is in the museum). (Translated by Google) A very interesting space that shows a lesser-known side of José Régio as a collector. A house that respects tradition, the poet's wishes and reveals his world and the society in which he lived. The tour was accompanied by Maria Augusta, an employee of the house-museum, who shared so much knowledge and interesting facts about José Régio and Portalegre. Congratulations, we need more cultural spaces like this! (Translated by Google) This was the house where the poet José Régio lived while he was a teacher in Portalegre. It was transformed into a museum in 1971, after being acquired by the Portalegre City Council, following the poet's wishes. We can see the beautiful collection of sacred and popular art from the region, which José Régio acquired throughout his life. A highlight is the more than 400 images of Christ Crucified, the oldest of which dates back to the 15th century (Gothic style). The tour is guided and gives us an insight into many interesting aspects of the poet's life.

(Translated by Google) A house museum that showcases pastoral art well. There's also a lot of sacred art, but that's less important to me. José Régio was an avid collector, and the visit is worthwhile in that regard. In terms of improvement options: having a little more of his art written around the house. There are some examples, but I think more serious ones are even better. The lady who guided me through the tour was enthusiastic and energetic. Thank you! Obrigada!

Camoesas J — Google review
(Translated by Google) It has potential, but it is underused. The space needs to be rethought. It is spacious and has magnificent shade. Sometimes cars pass on the pedestrian road that crosses the garden, putting children playing in the playground right next to the road in danger. At the very least, it would make sense to put up some removable pillars to block the entry of motorists who don't even notice the no-go sign. There are few rubbish bins. There are holes or cement flowerbeds hidden in the grass... It is a shame that this space, right next to the Town Hall and two schools, does not have the dignity or the use that would attract more families to the garden.

(Translated by Google) I just don't give 0 stars because it's not possible. Terrible in all aspects. I made our ribbon burning lunch together with a friend and it was simply terrible. Food besides being horrible, very COLD. We chose the most expensive menu and even that wasn't worth it. Very unfriendly staff and they made shipping, I even asked for fresh cheese because what was on the table had a sauce on top and not everyone liked it, guess what: "THERE IS NOT" as the fridge was full of cheese. LOL. Liars. Not to mention that things were missing from the menu. ANYWAY. RUN AWAY. ENFIM. FUJAAAAAM.

(Translated by Google) We went for lunch in a group of 23 people and there were 2 other groups with the same number of people, the food presented was 2 platters of meat cooked without seasoning, with melted shrimp that looked like the day before, something without presentation or flavor that doesn't present itself. at a table nowhere, 4 people from the group did not eat, because the employee was rude and refused to bring more food, and when he did he went to get a plate with leftovers from another group's table, they asked for another bottle of wine even if were paid separately due to the budget as it is a group, 20 euros/person in which an open bottle, half left over from another group, was also placed on the table. In the end, four digestives were politely requested in a plastic cup so as not to get dirty as it was close to 3pm, closing time, paid separately. When a young employee jumps out shouting that she doesn't serve and that she doesn't do tray service, when she was asked to stand at the counter, politely I repeat, she shouted, saying that those were her rules and the rules of the house. We left out of shame, since the girl doesn't have it and has never kept quiet. We were wrong not to ask for the complaints book, but we ran out of blood and it didn't even occur to us at the time, we could have not served and been polite, to say it in another way and we would have understood. Service, food, education, service, everything was of the lowest level and quality, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, a terrible experience, I won't come back, not even close. I completely advise against it. Nice restaurant in the historic center. We were welcomed by the door and were one of the early tables before it filled up. The owner (?) was very helpful to us deciding our order. Bread came and it was absolutely delicious, soft and fresh. Then we waited 45 min for the tomato soup (very good and rustic) and another 30 for our dishes. All the tables that came in after us were done. The owner apologized twice. The dishes were good but not outstanding in flavors. The fried chicken strips (frango frita) was the most interesting. An overall good experience that just tried our patience as relocated Americans in a land that can move slowly. I'd go back, however!

Nestled in the heart of Portalegre, Restaurante Tombalobos has been a passionate advocate for the culinary delights of Alto Alentejo for over two decades. Under the expert guidance of chef Jose Julio Vintem, this charming eatery showcases an authentic menu that highlights seasonal and local ingredients.
The food was very well cooked and delicious (we had pork belly and cockerel). The service was very good and the place itself is beautiful. The food is a bit pricey but considering how tasty it was it was and how good the service was, it was worth the money.

Decided to treat ourselves to a top notch lunch given we had to visit Portalegre. And this beautifully designed restaurant didn’t disappoint. Food is creative, with an extensive menu, and excellently executed. Staff are friendly and attentive. Pleased to see that they are checking vaccination certificates properly unlike some places. Location is in the old part of town, good for a wander around. Highly recommended.

Has to be one of the best meals I’ve had in a very long time. Staff were friendly and attentive, Chef was creative and prepared excellent Alentejo dishes. If you want superb local food, with great ambience (in a wine cave) and just a really enjoyable time - I’d highly recommend.

This a great surprise in the middle of Portalegre. Probably one of the best restaurants I’ve ever been. The food is simply amazing and the wines are simply the best. But what surprised me the most was the staff. They were quite amazing and very informative. They made strong suggestions about the dishes and the appropriate wines. Thank you so much for the experience. I want to repeat it more times. The only minor downside of this restaurant is the lack of Wi-Fi… but who cares? The employees are incredibly friendly and prompt in seating customers, while the cuisine on offer is exceedingly delectable, especially the spaghetti. Various types of sushi are available, though personal preference may lean towards a single kind. The sole drawback lies in the mildly disappointing sweetness of the chocolate mousse; nevertheless, no grievances were voiced. This establishment comes highly recommended and warrants generous tipping as well. It should be noted that repeated servings can be obtained for a singular price as indicated on the wall.
Wonderful restaurant, so much choice. The sushi is amazing. The staff are so helpful. Lovely clean restaurant with great views. Fantastic experience and value for money
Vanessa L — Google review
The staff is really nice and quickly gets you a table, and the food on the menu is really delicious, specially the spaghetti. They have several kinds of sushi available, although I personally only liked on of them. The only subpar thing, is that the chocolate mousse that was available wasn't as sweet as I was expecting, but no complains here! I highly recommend this place, it's worth tipping as well. You can repeat several times for only one price (posted on the wall). Love it!
Miguel N — Google review
Great value for money. €10.5 all you can eat sushi is the cheapest in all Portalegre. Be advised that the establishment does not accept international credit/debit cards and is somewhat far from an ATM.

Day 2

North side of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the north side side of town. Start the day off with Plátano do Rossio, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Portalegre's Municipal Museum. All together, your day would be filled with about 8 hours of non-stop fun.

The Saint Bernard Convent in Portalegre is a remarkable historical site that showcases stunning tile panels and charming cloisters, reflecting its well-preserved state. Currently serving as the headquarters for the GNR (Republican National Guard), this former monastery offers visitors a unique glimpse into its rich heritage. Friendly personnel accompany tours, sharing fascinating insights about the building's history and significance. Although it functions as a military school today, guests can still explore parts of this architectural gem by simply asking at the entrance.

A little restaurant in the middle of Portelegro. We were looking for a little light lunch, the food was ok, we had what was supposed to be stuffed veal but in reality it was just veal cooked in a nice sauce, served with chips and sallad. As I said the food was ok, it only gets 3 stars because the service was lacking. We never received a menu when we entered, the waiter just wrote 2 dish names in English on a piece of paper and gave it to us and we never new how much the food cost until I paid the bill. The food was good and worth the 8 euros each it cost.

Although it doesn't have much space it translates in a more cozy and relaxing ambience. (Translated by Google) Excellent Roman pizza! The place is small, but I usually take it home to eat. The garlic bread with cheese is also very good. (Original) Pizza romana excelente!

Restaurant
Nestled in a charming locale, O Abrigo do Martinho is a delightful haven for food lovers. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with attentive staff who ensure your dining experience is memorable. During my visit, I enjoyed a serene lunch where the soup of the day was simply magnificent—perfectly balanced in texture. The pork steak topped with an egg was not only delicious but also beautifully presented in rustic clay dishes.
This place is AMAZING. The food was incredible, the land and sea skewer (last thing on the grilled section) was absolutely to die for. The steak was soft, tender, and it came with grilled pineapple with was beautiful. The sangria was lovely and my dad had the pork tenderloin with honey and cleared his plate. The staff was lovely, Luis was our server, and despite not knowing much English made the biggest effort and even taught us a few words in Portuguese. He was great!! Atmosphere was great even for a Wednesday evening. Mostly full tables but still amazing service. Wish we could come back again, but we are at the end of our holiday. Might come back to Portalegre just for this restaurant. Thank you Luis!

It's a very friendly and nice place, the staff is attentive as well. The waiter seemed to be new, but still the experience was not affected by that. It wasn't very crowded when we went to have lunch so it was a very calm lunch. We had the soup of the day and pork steak with egg on top and was all very delicious and well cooked. The soup was magnificent, not to watery and not to pasty just perfect. The meal it self was served in clay dishes what was surprisingly pleasant to the eyes. The potatoes seemed home made so that's a very good sign right there.

We had an amazing meal at this beautiful typical restaurant, we tried the lamb chops and açorda (mashed bread) of wild chicken, nice wine, very agreeable place!

(Translated by Google) Fantastic food, very good and well-prepared. We were served superbly and quickly. The only drawback is that they charge for filtered or purified water, and there was no drinks menu, nor was it mentioned anywhere. €2.50 for a bottle of tap water is excessive for the area. But the restaurant is worth it, a true culinary experience.

(Translated by Google) Very good: the space, the service, the food, everything. We had tender and flavorful tenderloins with honey mustard sauce, delicious and fluffy rice, and very good fries. We also ordered a similarly delicious Black pork stew, accompanied by very good and tasty baked potatoes and a perfectly cooked açorda (bread stew). A large salad was very well seasoned. 10 out of 10 for the gentleman who served us, very friendly and attentive. Overall, everything was very good, highly recommended :D (Original) Muito bom, espaço, serviço, comida, tudo.

(Translated by Google) Picturesque restaurant... Friendly staff... Food well prepared with the exception of the dessert, more specifically the pudding, it seemed instant... The only bad thing... I recommend making a reservation... (Original) Restaurante pitoresco... Recomendo fazer reserva...

(Translated by Google) Well we arrived, we ate and we left. Well, I think it's an expensive place for what they offer. Around 35-40% higher in value than it should be. Normal food, very very slow service, that in itself is not a problem, I am not in a hurry to eat. Problem, I think that in the end, between the appetizers, the bread, the olives, the pates and the small plate of sausage, they charge you almost more than €7, because the bill comes to you like a luxury. When the service and food is average bar. I don't plan to return. No pienso volver.
