Follonica in 2 days

If you only have 2 days to spend in Follonica, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Follonica is a relaxed seaside town on Tuscany’s Maremma coast, known for its long sandy beaches and shallow, family-friendly waters. The shoreline looks onto the island of Elba and offers plenty of opportunities for swimming, sailing and windsurfing. A lively promenade, summer nightlife and nearby pine forests make it appealing for a classic Italian beach holiday, while day trips to medieval hill towns and natural parks are easily arranged from here.
With favorites like Varco 3 spiaggia libera riserva naturale statale tomboli di Follonica, Portale Del Mistero, and Pinacoteca A. Modigliani, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Pinsa & More and Osteria il Trabaccolo so you can get the best taste of Follonica while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Acqua Village Follonica is a Hawaiian-themed water park featuring twisting water slides, outdoor pools, and a variety of attractions. The park is well-maintained and organized, with ample parking and seating areas. Visitors can enjoy a range of pools and slides suitable for both adults and children. The park offers clean facilities, short queues, and plenty of shaded areas. Additionally, the on-site food options exceed expectations. Overall, it's a great place to spend the day with family or friends.
Beautiful acqua park for everyone. Free zone for sunbathing with umbrellas near pool, with DJ music on the floor side of pool. There are bar and restaurant take away in zone, dressing room near toilet and clean toilet.
NNN G — Google review
We visited the village on the opening day. The place was very crowded, so the wait for most of the waterslides was quite long, especially since there are only a couple of slides. Despite the crowds, however, the place was clean. Bear in mind that everything from lockers to showers costs extra. Overall, not bad for Follonica standards, but also nothing extraordinary. I highly recommend buying tickets online.
Maciej W — Google review
A cracking day out at Follonica. There were plenty of spaces to setup our camp in the shade - lots more options further into the park if you don’t find a good one by the entrance like we did. Lots of options for kids and adults of all ages to enjoy. It’s the not the most extensive in terms of number of different slides, but there was plenty to keep us busy for about 5 hours on a hot day. The flying act on a water jet pack thing was pretty cool, but we all wanted to have a go not just watch!
Michael C — Google review
Great place for all the family, recommend to arrive when it open to have place to seat. It is not very big park but you can spend half a day. The food is great and not so expensive.
Amir S — Google review
I have visited plenty of water parks all over the world, from the huge US-parks to others in Australia. This small one was so far the best, no kidding. Very clean, great value for the money, now in early September on a Tuesday ZERO waiting team, funny rides. Not mega mega fancy, but really thrilling.
P.S. — Google review
We arrived on a Monday by 10am. Not busy at all. We didn't buy tickets online before and it was fine. Lots of covered parking. Fun staff on stilts welcoming everyone. Very clean and nice Hawaii design. Easy to navigate as not overly large and fine to let our 11 and 13 year olds roam. All life guards and staff spoke helpful English and were very welcoming and friendly. Parking 4 euro Umbrella lockers 4 euro with free chairs. Sunloungers 4 euro. We just got two as kids were mostly off having a blast. Three groups of larger slides were fun with lots of options. No queues to speak of. Can ride with rings or without. Not to scary for adults either! We liked the Kamikazee the best. Park is most suited to pre teens down to toddlers with their own dedicated area. Food options were fine with lots of usual variety. A very nice way spend a fun filled day.
Michael H — Google review
My son simply loved it here. There is something for all ages and you cannot not have fun.
Andreea M — Google review
Visited the aqua village on a Monday in June. Not too crowded. Children enjoyed it. Park is nice and clean. You can buy food inside the village but it is quite expensive. We brought our own food. Sun shaded parking for 3€. Free parking on the other side of the street.

The Church of San Leopoldo holds great significance in Follonica and stands out for its unique design, constructed in 1836. What makes this church truly distinctive is the extensive utilization of a material deeply connected to Follonica's history: cast iron. A multitude of architectural features, such as columns, embellishments in the churchyard, a decorative rose window, the apse, and even certain furnishings are crafted from cast iron.

Piazza Leopoldo II di Lorena in Follonica is closely tied to the economic and population boom of the area, attributed to Leopoldo II's efforts. As one of the last grand-dukes of Tuscany with connections to the Bourbon dynasty, he capitalized on the rich iron resources in Maremma by establishing the Royal and Imperial Foundries in Follonica.

The MAGMA Museum of Arts Cast Iron Maremma is a gem in the small town, offering an interactive and detailed experience that reflects the history and charm of the area. The museum beautifully documents all aspects of cast iron production, with special attention to the stories of foundry employees. Visitors are taken on a journey through different floors filled with panels, photos, and descriptions that fantastically link the exhibits together. The staff is friendly and helpful, adding to the overall enjoyable local experience.
I did not expect a lot from the local museum in small town, and to no purpose. Museum is great , interactive, detailed , many installations and not too many text. I would say it’s made with love to the city. Please do not expect exp like in top museums but come here for good local exp .

Very disappointed because we wasted half a day coming here. Their website doesn't say that it is closed on the May 1st public holiday (unlike many other museums). And there's no sign on the door stating that either, so we wasted another hour waiting for it to open. It looks like they haven't updated the website for 18 months.

(Translated by Google) I have been to Follonica, and I must say that I was not particularly impressed by its sea and its beaches, but this museum was truly a beautiful and pleasant discovery. It tells and shows a little about all the processing of iron and cast iron, how they came to us and how they were and are today fundamental materials used in many sectors. The water wheel is interesting and then the video story on the history of materials and processing from the Etruscans to the present day. I suggest going there and bringing children and teenagers, because they will certainly be overcome by curiosity as they enter and leave, they will have something more in their cultural baggage.

(Translated by Google) The MAGMA is housed in the former factory city, the original nucleus around which the town of Follonica developed, in particular in the building which at the time was a prodigious smelting furnace. The museum itinerary is spread over three floors: on the ground floor it tells of the "artistic" production, on the first floor there is a historical-educational exhibition while in the basement there is a suggestive setting that aims to represent the production environments. An installation full of multimedia and interactive integrations. Very interesting for children too. If you are on holiday in Follonica and you experience a day of uncertain weather, it is a highly recommended destination for an interesting alternative activity. Whilst very modest in appearance the raw seafood, that is various types of shrimp and langoustine, as well as their lobster pasta were absolutely delicious. When asked for desert we ordered another plate of 'crudo' instead. The chef came to see us personally as he probably does not often see such enthusiasm. The staff was wonderful and attentive too. The wine list was extensive and thought through. We highly recommend!

(Translated by Google) A small restaurant on a side street in the center, with a few tables inside and a few outside; reservations are recommended. The quality of the meat, the cooking, and the preparation by the chef and the lady in the kitchen, who also makes fantastic desserts, are WORTH IT. But the real highlight is TIZIANA, who welcomes you and entertains you throughout the dinner in a fantastic way. A lady "from television" who was a great and very pleasant surprise to find here. The excellent Chianina PGI beef (sliced, picana, Fiorentina, rib-eye steak) is served on cast iron plates so you can continue cooking for those who prefer their meat not rare. Also excellent are the cacio-pepe-truffle pici, and finally, the desserts made by the lady in the kitchen. Excellent red wine, served in a special way (seeing is believing) and at an ideal temperature of 16-18°C. The owner owes nothing but thanks to the entire staff at this restaurant, especially TIZIANA, for the restaurant being packed every night. I repeat, highly recommended, especially with reservations given the limited seating. Ripeto consigliatissssimo soprattutto previa prenotazione visto i pochi posti a sedere.

Nestled along the stunning Tuscan coastline, Ristorante Il Sottomarino is a seafood lover's paradise that promises an unforgettable dining experience. With its sleek design and enchanting garden terrace overlooking the sea, guests can indulge in beautifully plated dishes crafted from freshly caught seafood. As you savor each bite, the breathtaking sunset adds to the ambiance, creating a magical backdrop for your meal. The restaurant prides itself on offering exceptional value without compromising quality.
Great restaurant, lovely food and nice setting. Amuse bouche was very nice. Warm seafood salad and ravioli were standout dishes

First things first. Book! Especially in high season. Waiting outside in the heat, hoping for a table that may never materialise, it's just not worth it. As for the restaurant per se, there's a reasonable selection of sea food dishes on the menu at an affordable price. The whole, accompanied by a nice wine selection where there were some interesting bottles from Francia Corta (try them out). Of the dishes we ordered, all were extremely well prepared, but some of them had a few quirks and lapses that are unacceptable at a Michelin mentioned restaurant. A case in hand, the "polpo spadellato" which, in our case, had acquired a strong smoked/burnt aroma that spoilt the experience. Others, like the "ravioli alla razza", came with a sauce that, in our opinion, did nothing for the excellent ravioli except smother their taste. Still of the eight dishes we had, most were excellent (the "trancio di morone" for example), well presented and well cooked. The desserts are very good and I suggest you share them at the table so everyone can try different things. The waiters were professional and courteous, sometimes distracted by perhaps having too many tables given the number of personnel available. Prices are in the norm for a sea food restaurant, especially if you consider the quality of the service and the 'ambiance'.

Unmatched table in Tuscany by the sea. Exceptional in every aspect and real value for money. The $$$ in Google profile are deceptive. Bravo to the chef and the team. It is not by accident that you have to book well in advance. The spirit of offering value to the customer goes further from the menu to the wine list. The service is top. The only cons are the lack of rythm between the different plates, however not really disturbing, and the really great difficulty to find a parking place. After half an hour of search, we finaly found a place where we got a ticket.

The food was simply bland - every single dish. We have visited a few Michelin guide recommended (or starred) restaurants but this is the first one where we are totally lost why it is featured at all. Overpriced, overthought, overrated - a nice looking tourist trap at best.

Position: Seafood restaurant in a prime location facing the sea. We were seated in the garden area as opposed to the front terrace surrounded by the intense scent of jasmine. Ambience: Low noise levels and sense of intimacy with tables well spaced. Covid-19 rules fully respected. Subtle lighting on the tables (Flos) so no glare. Very pleasant! Service: Excellent service. A special mention to Anna, a delightfully helpful and friendly waitress who attended to all our needs. Food: Food was well presented although portions were contained. Maybe the mixed seafood dish could have been hotter (piping is always preferred). "Cannoli" for dessert were delicious (chef is Sicilian so he knows his profession!). Fresh pineapple chunks could have been served in a more eye-pleasing way and perhaps some experimentation from the chef would have created a more exciting dessert. Extra virgin olive oil from Massa Marittima (Morisfarms) was very much appreciated with the accompanying bread. Wine: White Vermentino also from Massa Marittima (same estate) was ordered and given full marks for its fruity and light flavour. Supporting the local economy deserves top marks! Pricing: The bill for two came to 90 euro. Thank you for the very pleasant evening! Booking in advance is necessary!

For appetizers, we ordered the scallops and quinoa cod nuggets. They were both bland and lukewarm when they arrived. Unfortunately, this was the best part of our dining experience. For entrees, I ordered the gnocchi with baby calamari, and my wife order the calamarata. After about 20-25 minutes the waitress brought us two big plates of fried seafood, that clearly wasn’t our order. When we tried to tell her this was not what we ordered, she shrugged her shoulders and walked away from us. After about 4-5 minutes, a different server came and hastily grabbed them off of our table and gave them to the couple sitting at the table right next to us (they were also not happy about the mixup). After about 10 more minutes my wife’s calamarata came to the table. It was cold and bland. We sat there confused for about 5 more minutes before my gnocchi arrived with zero explanation. Again, my pasta was also lukewarm and bland (we should have gotten up and left right there). The service treated us like we were somehow at fault for them not knowing where to deliver anybodies dishes, and even the owner was rude when we tried to tell her about our experience. Everything was so awful, that this is the first time I’ve ever written a review (good or bad) about a restaurant (it was THAT terrible) in my life. I have absolutely no idea how this place has a Michelin star. We’ve been in Follonica for about a week now, and dined at several other establishments in the same area. All of them have been good to great food, service, and environments. Do yourself a favor and avoid this overpriced, overhyped tourist trap. Literally all of the restaurants in the area are substantially better (and less costly). You couldn’t pay me to come back to Sottomarino.

The worst restaurant in Follonica. Service was terrible. The food was served cold and they brought us the wrong dishes at first. The wine was old and disgusting. They claim being a Michelin restaurant but this place is not worth it! Please get pizza instead if you’re hungry. THE WORST RESTAURANT IN FOLLONICA.

***UPDATE*** not sure if it’s coincidence or if they saw my review, but this morning there were 2 staff members out there cleaning 👏🙌 *** My family and I went (ages 6, 10, 12, 39, and my mom at 69). We did have fun even though some of us got some scrapes and bruises (I think that can be expected). The main thing that really disappointed us and was disgusting was that there was bird poop all over the equipment! Everywhere you stepped and fell was on bird poop, and often you have to use your hands to help yourself so that was just disgusting. I know it would not be the easiest thing, but surly they can find a way to clean it and maintain the cleanliness. Unfortunately, our hour time frame ended early because my son was stung badly by a jellyfish. The lifeguard on duty did hear him screaming and crying and checked on us. We ended up needing the lifeguard to row my son back to shore in his little raft. All in all, I would do it again if the bird poop was cleaned thoroughly and minus the jellyfish sting.

Nestled in the scenic Montioni Natural Park, La Pievaccia stands as a captivating remnant of history atop Poggio al Chiecco hill. This site features the ruins of what was once a fortified church, possibly transformed into a religious structure during its later years before being abandoned. Visitors can access the second level via an iron staircase that leads to a platform offering breathtaking views stretching from Piombino and Elba Island to Monterotondo Marittimo and Massa Marittima.
(Translated by Google) Suggestive medieval watchtower and refuge, located on the crest of Poggio al Chiecco, perhaps transformed into a religious building in a later period (hence the name) and then abandoned. From the second level, which is accessed by an iron staircase with walkway, you can enjoy an exceptional panorama that goes from Piombino (ancient capital of the principality) and Elba, up to Monterotondo Marittimo and Massa Marittima. Precisely from that direction, in ancient times, a danger could have come for the Principality of Piombino, for which the tower was fundamental for the defense of the territory. The lower part is closed to the public, next to the building there is an ancient cistern. Highly recommended, it's about a 20 minute uphill walk from the car park.

I assume more for a sighting system than for a religious function as the name might lead one to believe. In any case, beautiful panorama, truly suggestive. I suggest to those who intend to visit it to go through the path in the woods just before the parking lot and the signs towards the fire road. Unfortunately we were not able to try their food since we came at 4:30 on a Saturday and they were still closed… This is was the 3rd pizza place we went to and they were all closed even when they said they were open! Not sure what was up but very annoying

Tasty pizza. Good value for money. Big plus for gluten free pizza option! 😃 👏
Jarema D — Google review
Wonderful pizza and burger place. Loved that they had gluten free options! Chef seemed a bit cranky (wouldn’t make eye contact nor greet his customers) but the staff are smiling and helpful.

Fresh and delicious pizza. Nice and fast service with short lesson of Italian lenguage. "Must eat" :) during sightseeing or after day on a beach. Highly recommended.
Jarek — Google review
We came for a full pizza but they were only serving per slice and they didn’t look too appealing. If you’re from the US then you might’ve had similar ones served in your elementary school cafeteria lol. We got the double bacon burger and chicken burger with deep fried mozzarella balls instead. The breaded chicken breast in the chicken burger was so thin that it was almost crunchy. The bacon burger was fine but greasy. The mozzarella balls were good though. Their menu was more ‘American-style’ and had lots of options so maybe it was just a miss with these items

We liked it a lot! Good food, fast and good service...only the location in front of the street is not perfect. But a in all good location.

Seafood restaurant
The Piccolo Mondo hotel is a unique and eccentric establishment propped up on stilts above the sea. It boasts a seafood restaurant with loaner bikes for guests to use. The location is superb, situated right by the seaside with stunning views of the waters. The restaurant itself is spacious and tastefully adorned, making it ideal for accommodating large groups of people. The staff are friendly and welcoming, providing an enjoyable dining experience. The menu offers an excellent selection of reasonably priced seafood dishes.
My 3rd time in this delightful place. Location, quality of food and service are amazing and more than make up for the ageing overall look of the place. Definitely a Must visit if you are in the area

Travelling south and spotted this place-in-the-sea on GoogleMaps, great location and food at a good price, with great (English) service from the Calabrian. Good view of the sunset from the window-side tables. Highly recommended if you are passing..
Kerry W — Google review
Very nice location, on the seaside, just above the waters. The restaurant room is spacious, able to host rather large groups of people and nicely decorated. Amiable staff. Excellent choice of seafood at a reasonable cost.

The restaurant has lost al charm! The guy that served us was like a salesman. That doesn’t work on us. We got a disappointed and didn’t take the food he wanted us to eat. After that he didn’t even look our way haha! The food was mid! It didn’t taste anything. But two stars because of the view.

I was waiting something more from this place. Good dishes with fresh fish but nothing special. Old refurbishment of the restaurant and distracted personnel.

Great fresh fish, the sashimi was excellent along with the fish of the day. Extensive wine list and great recommendations from the super attentive waiters. Strongly recommended.

Really nice place. Great service. We had probably the best pasta dish with burata and clams there, wow! We had the fresh fish of the day which was really tasty but the vegetables on the side could have been much better. Thanks for a good experience!
