Mytilene, the capital of Lesbos, combines a busy harborfront with layers of Greek, Byzantine, and Ottoman history. It also serves as a convenient base for visiting Lesbos’s thermal springs, coastal villages, and beaches around the island.
With favorites like Tsamakia beach, Castle of Mytilene, and Roman Aqueduct, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. Sights & Landmarks
The Castle of Mytilene is a must-visit destination in Greece, offering a rich historical and cultural experience. Situated on top of a hill in the northern part of the town, this castle is one of the largest in the Mediterranean. Originally built during the Byzantine period and later renovated by Francesco Gattilusio, it provides stunning views of the surrounding area.
Very nice place. Historically valuable, many castle walls and rooms have now been restored. Some buildings are still being restored (August 2024). A good overview of the city, you can make good photos. Entrance costs 3 euros per person, the castle is open until three o'clock, but I recommend visiting it from the very morning before the scorching sun.

Mytilene castle is a place that is well worth seeing. You have the ancient underground crypts, churches the jail, and some of the best views in Lesvos
Peter B — Google review
We were there on Monday after 5 p.m. and it was closed. The main castle is under renovation and is surrounded by scaffolding. Mino, it is worth taking a walk along the alley to admire the beautiful views
Ewa Ś — Google review
While the place offers a beautiful view and is rich in history, the entrance instructions were not very clear. In addition, there were not enough signs or explanations about the artifacts. Overall, it’s definitely worth a visit, but there’s room for improvement. Tickets were free for under 18, and costs €5 for adults.
Ceren U — Google review
A very large and magnificent castle offers a delightful experience of watching the sea view from its forts. However, it closes early, so it is advisable to check the timings before planning a visit.
Pamir Ç — Google review
I cycled from the centre to the castle and left my bike at the entrance with the guard who happily accommodated me and offered advice on how to make the most of my visit. It was Christmas time and rather quiet but sunny, bright and warm. The view from the castle is breathtaking.
Maria V — Google review
A good place to visit, much of it is in ruins and under restoration but the storage rooms underground were impressive. It was also free on the day we visited due to a holiday.

Yeni Mosque, located in Mytilene, is a significant historical site and the largest mosque in the area. It was built to replace an older mosque that was destroyed in an earthquake in 1867. Although it has not been restored and appears as a beautiful ruin, it remains an intriguing place for history enthusiasts to explore. Situated along a shopping street, this mosque offers visitors a unique glimpse into the past and is definitely worth a visit for those interested in history and architecture.
Beautiful location. Unfortunately, it is not open for visitors.
Ef B — Google review
This mosque has historical value, but is very neglected. We did not get inside on Saturday, but there is nothing to see there, from the street you can see most of the facades and the courtyard. It would be incredibly cool if this mosque were restored!
Anna H — Google review
Nothing special. Poorly described and poorly maintained ruin. You can’t go inside. Only viewable from the outside.
Kris S — Google review
It's left alone to it's fate.. The building originally looks beautiful, but it's not restored at all. Sad..
Faruk Y — Google review
Need to be restored and get ready for visiting purposes, not quite good in condition right now.
Zafer O — Google review
I wish it would be renovated
Mimi — Google review
Unfortunately we could not see this place. Obviously a very important part of history; you can tell that the architecture is beautiful and sophisticated; and it is a temple of Muslim faith; I strongly believe it needs to be maintained properly and should be open to visit. It was very disappointing to see a place like this is left to ruin. Authorities need to step up and do right by this place.

Tsamakia beach

Beach
Nestled on the edge of a public park, Tsamakia Beach is a delightful pay-to-enter destination that boasts pebbly sands and an array of amenities. For just 2 Euros, visitors can enjoy sunbeds, umbrellas, and access to clean facilities including showers and changing cubicles. This beach is particularly popular year-round due to its stunning views and prime location in Mytilene. While it can get busy during the summer months, the serene atmosphere makes it well worth a visit.
Plaz restaurant was really nice (but the cocktails are extremely watered down). The beach is very cheap (2€ entrance fee) and you get a locker for 1€ more. The water is great but you need shoes because of the rocks. Also, look at this pigeon
Asya — Google review
Great beach very close to Mythelini. 2 Euro entry per person and nice / clean facility. We loved it
Arda L — Google review
Entrance is €2. The sea is beautiful, but make sure to wear water shoes — there are lots of sea urchins, and we unfortunately stepped on one too. If that happens, go straight to the lifeguard, they help immediately. The restaurant staff are friendly and attentive. It’s €5 by taxi from the center. Once you get the number, you can call them via WhatsApp — they arrive quickly. Walking in the heat can be tough, so a taxi might be a better choice
Burdan G — Google review
Nice experience with a great beach entrance fee of €2.00. But has all the facilities
Mike Y — Google review
A very clean, calm and peaceful beach right in the center of Mytilene, easily accessible on foot. There is a 2 euro entrance fee. Inside, you have sunbeds and umbrellas. You can order food and drinks from the restaurant. I was pleasantly surprised by how clean the toilets were, really impressive. Since the beach is rocky, it's better to use the pier to get into the water or wear water shoes to protect your feet. There are also areas for playing volleyball and other games. The only negative point is the presence of some seaweed in certain parts. If I come back to Mytilene, I would definitely visit again.
İsmail G — Google review
Loved this place! 2 euros entry, includes deck chairs, umbrellas, change rooms, toilets, kids play activities, and there is a cafe, includes alcohol. Service was excellent. The water is lovely, not too many rocks if you go off one of the jetties. Not too crowded either. I think it's a hidden gem in this town!
Deniz C — Google review
If you don’t have a car this beach is the best place to go. Entrance fee is 2 Euros, you can eat, drink and enjoy yourself whole day
Hülya K — Google review

The Archaeological Museum of Mytilene is located in the capital of Lesvos, offering a serene and valuable experience for visitors. The city itself provides modern conveniences with accommodations, entertainment facilities, and various shops. The museum's proximity to the ferry makes it easily accessible, although visitors should be cautious on sunny days due to the heat. Additionally, the museum is close to a park and beach, providing opportunities for relaxation and swimming.
Very fascinating look at the history of Lesvos and Mytilene. The restored mosaic floors and the replica kitchen were my highlights. If you appreciate Roman artifacts I would recommend going

really beautiful collection!! so fascinating to see the recreations of the buildings and architecture they had collected mosaics from, and you can even walk on them (on protected glass) to full explore the size and magnitude of the art!! really cool place to visit
Mary — Google review
An excellent museum with some unique exhibits like the mosaics from a Roman villa of Hellenistic times. And if you can get Ismene to be your guide, you will enjoy it even more!
Claire T — Google review
The museum will be interesting for people who like history and archeology. The museum has many artifacts that were excavated on the island, it is interesting to walk and read, comparing it with history. The entrance cost 4 euros, the employees are polite, but it was a little uncomfortable when they followed you and talked to each other. It would be much more valuable if the museum had tours or stories about the history. If you have no alternative to occupy yourself in the city, you can visit this museum.
Anna H — Google review
Fantastic mosaiacs and some interesting objects. Random non sequential jumbling of item numbers and text contributed to it being a bit inaccessible. As with so many museums, would benefit from a rewrite of the narratives for brevity and clarity together with placing the objects in the broader historical and geopolitical forces that shaped this beautiful island over the millenia.
Erich S — Google review
The location of the museum is so close to Ferries. We walked all the way there but be careful on sunny days. It may be hot, wear your hat. The museum is so close to a park and a beach. If you have swimsuits with you, you may swim. When you get in there, there is a small reception on the left. If you don’t want to carry your backpack with you, there are locked wardrobes. It looks like museum is a calm place and few people visits there but valuable. There is always a lady directs you during the trip. Rooms are little bit complicated but someone helps, no worries. I had almost 100 photos, the system doesn’t let me upload all. I may try it later. Anyway, the museum is cool, I enjoyed it. I hope you can also like it. Enjoy your trip!

Roman Aqueduct

4.6
(562)
The Roman Aqueduct, located near the town of Mytilene on the island of Lesbos, is a remarkable ancient structure dating back to the 2nd and 3rd century AD. This impressive 160-meter long aqueduct was part of a larger system that transported water from Olympos Mountain to ancient Mytilene. Built with characteristic grey marble, the ruins in Moria feature up to three levels of arches between each pillar.
This is an unbelievably beautiful structure u just outside Moria about 15 minutes from Mytilene. They think ot was made in 2 A.D. due to the way it’s constructed but no one really knows. It’s well worth the drive, it’s a hidden gem. “Edit” 3 day after I went it was put on the UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE LIST so hopefully they will put up better signage.
Peter B — Google review
The aqueduct is a remarkable feat of engineering and architecture. However, the access roads are in need of significant improvement. One can reach the site via the narrow roads of Moria village, or by taking the rocky road that branches off from the main highway. The latter option is not recommended.
Pamir Ç — Google review
Visiting the Roman Aqueduct near Moria was definitely a highlight of my trip to Lesbos. Despite the clear signage in the village, the route there is a bit of an adventure with narrow roads and the occasional tight turn that can make you wonder if you’re heading the right way. But once you get there, you can drive right up to the aqueduct and park, which is a relief in the heat. The aqueduct itself is really impressive. I found online that it was built somewhere around the late 2nd or early 3rd century AD and it used to bring water from Mount Olympus all the way to Mytilini. Roughly around 26 kilometers, supplying a huge amount of water every day. I found out that it’s about 24.5 meters high and 170 meters long, with 17 arches and 16 marble pillars still standing tall. A lot of it has been restored but on the top you can find the original arches. It’s a bit of a shame that there isn’t more information at the site. You’d expect at least a sign explaining when it was built or how it worked, but there’s nothing like that. Still, it’s a fantastic place to visit, especially if you’re into history or want to see something unique that’s a bit off the beaten path. Bring some water, wear good shoes, and take a minute to appreciate this incredible piece of history.
Dylan R — Google review
I had seen photos online but it was worth the visit in real life. The structure was massive and a fantastic photo opportunity. There was sufficient signage for us to find it, as some previous reviews stated, some roads are narrow and steep. There is no entry fee or tickets, the site is open. We also fed some cats near some bins on the way.
Katie B — Google review
Outstanding. Such a special structure. It's even better if you come here for a concert during the Molyvos International Music Festival. The place is lit up and is alluring in the music in all of its glory.
Petra D — Google review
An excellent example of roman engineering. There is a simple board in Greek and English with history. Driving through Moria is fun in a small car. Adequately signposted but if you miss one ask a local - do not depend on Google once in the village. The road out the other way is very passable with long stretches of concrete but some sections of unmade road - ok in daylight.
Neils — Google review
Difficult drive to get there but really great to see, so it was worth it!

Cafe
Kafeneion O Ermis is a historic kafeneio-ouzeri in Lesbos, dating back to the 1800s when the island was under Ottoman rule. It offers 15 varieties of ouzo and excellent meze, including stuffed courgette flowers, dolma, seasonal greens, and homemade pasta. The old-school interior with faded paintings in gilded frames provides a great atmosphere for people-watching.
All were good. Especially the fava, zucchini flower dolma, lakerda but the octopus in wine is exceptional. It was so delicious. The old bar, mirrors, all decoration was nice, you feel like you are in the beginning of 20th century. Prices are moderate.
Ismail A — Google review
The highlight of our weekend in Lesvos was definitely Kafeneion O Ermis! The interior design is quite impressive, but we chose to sit in the open-air section for dinner. It’s a very popular restaurant operating with a reservation system — even though all tables were full, new guests kept arriving. Luckily, we didn’t have any trouble getting a table. As always, the table was set with the classic olive-patterned kraft paper and a pitcher of ice-cold water. We enjoyed octopus cooked in wine, Greek salad, and stuffed zucchini flowers with a glass of white wine (Retsina)— everything was delicious. Due to the crowd, they couldn’t take our dessert order, but that gives us a reason to return :) And of course, the island’s iconic cats were there too!
Sevil Ö — Google review
I visited a historic taverna in Mytilini and had mixed feelings. I rated it 3/5 because it’s not what it used to be. Many dishes on the menu were unavailable, and we were only informed after sitting down—not just seasonal items, but many others too. The grilled cuttlefish was overcooked and tough to chew. However, the fried dishes and anchovies were very tasty. The service was good timing-wise, and the waitresses were kind, but the fact they kept saying ‘we don’t have this or that’ kind of frustrated me. Some alternative recommendations or suggestions off the menu coming from the waitress might have been nice. The atmosphere, rich with history, is the highlight if you’re looking to experience an old traditional “kafenio” style taverna.

The atmosphere is very cozy, an old rum tavern. The staff were friendly and meticulous about customer satisfaction. the food was delicious. We ordered saganaki, zucchini balls, fava, aubergine salad, octopus cooked in wine, grilled calamari and chicken tigania with ouzo. I didn't like the calamari very much, the octopus was cooked very well, the consistency was very good but the taste was not very original. Fava was not very suitable for my taste.
ASLI D — Google review
I visited Lesvos 4 times in the last 12 years, and had been in O’Ermis 10 years ago. It was really good years ago and still really good. It is a family run restaurant. The fish is always fresh, the seafood is well cooked and served directly from the grill. The octopus in wine sauce is one the best in town. It is one of the best afternoon lunch restaurants in Mitylene.
MBK — Google review
This is a traditional Tapas style restaurant at the heart of Mytilene. Story goes that it has been around in one form or another since the 1800s. An attractive decor with old memorabilia and a beautiful space inside is what to expect in terms of ambience. It captures the essence of the times gone. Food Quality is great, portions are decent and prices are very reasonable. It also has quite an impressive Ouzo list if you’re into that. Service was fast, friendly and efficient. what more to ask? Must try

Fish (sardines and red mullet) was not prepared properly before frying. You could see and taste that easily :( Calamari was chewy. I wouldn’t recommend seafood but appetizers are okay. Nestled in the charming streets of Mytiline, NAN is a remarkable not-for-profit restaurant that beautifully blends culinary delights with a mission to uplift the local refugee community. Founded by four inspiring Greek women, this social enterprise offers a unique dining experience where refugees from various regions prepare an array of global dishes. I had to come here when I heard of how this restaurant helps refugees. We had a Greek Salad and chicken with rice. It was super good. We asked to pay and were told to pay what we thought it was worth. The chef cooks for the customers and 30 refugees everyday. Refugees also work here.

One of the best dining experiences in a very atmospheric street of Mytiline (Komninaki street). Great concept, run by refugees and locals, serves delicious and extremely healthy dishes inspired by the refugees cuisine. We had the green salad, roasted mushrooms wrap, the spinach and feta lasagna, and the Kabuli chicken pulao. And their pita bread of course! If you want a drink you can order from the bar across the street (Sponda), water is served at the premises. A wonderful restaurant serving delicious dishes with a twist. Me and my concubine needed a break from Greek salad, so we took refuge in the lovely menu at Nan. We have to say, we were blown away by the colourful journey of nibbles and Nom noms. I cannot recommend this place enough!!!!

Definitely the best restaurant of all Mytillini. Between hearty wraps, fresh salad, flavorful dips and delicious dishes of the day, everyone will find their perfect match. Vegetarian and vegan options are clearly indicated and the menu is available in both Greek and English. Plus the staff is really friendly. Would highly recommend the muhammara and their naan bread

Tasty food with fair prices. Kind employees. Warm and relaxing ambiance. Chicken wrap and falafel wrap were very good. Mutabal was also delicious. Specifically advise homemade lemonade and ice tea.
