Specialty Museums
Nestled in the heart of Shildon, Locomotion is a captivating museum that celebrates the rich tapestry of railway history. As part of the largest railway museum complex globally, it boasts an impressive array of locomotives and interactive displays that transport visitors back in time. This family-friendly destination is perfect for all ages, offering year-round access to its fascinating exhibits.
Absolutely brilliant place. Packed with exhibits and clear interpretation boards. Lots of tables and chairs fitted about for families to use for crafts, picnics, or just resting. Two big indoor spaces filled with locks and trucks of all descriptions and good historical information. A fantastic resource, and all free.
Helen S — Google review
We visited this museum for a special visit by the flying Scotsman. For a small payment, you could enjoy a short ride being pulled by this famous locomotive. The museum has improved a lot since we last visited, with a second hall now open with more trains and carriages inside. There also seemed to be more interactive exhibits than last time. Well worth a visit, especially as it's free (donation is welcome)
Martin ( — Google review
Lovely couple of hours spent here last week. Nice welcome, free but donations encouraged. Two large sheds with a good range of exhibits and plenty of details and information boards about the history of trains which began in the area. Smaller than their sister location at York, but much less busy with a dedicated free carpark.
Lisa J — Google review
Locomotion is a great experience. Coupled with the opportunity for me to cab ride Scotsman from the museum was a bonus. When I went there were plenty of people but enough gaps to video without people mostly. Well laid out with good interpretive signage. I appreciate the freight equipment being in its working clothes.
Paul P — Google review
Great place to visit if you like trains. Very helpful and friendly staff, cafe for coffee and a snack. Ample parking. Lots train related for adults and kids. 👍🏻
Andy J — Google review
Excellent railway museum. Lots of exhibits in two massive buildings. Check website for running days on short demonstration track. Good cafe and friendly staff.
Graddy 6 — Google review
Lovely clean and roomy place. Nice big carpark. Free to enter, we gave a donation. The trains are amazing. Lovely walk to see the old building (none are open) which is a shame. Overall super morning out.
C T — Google review
Outstanding venue and will cost you nothing unless you want to make a donation (which everyone should even if it's only a pound or two). The staff were all very friendly, and the exhibitions were excellent. The flying Scotsman was there on our visit (see photos). A massive sandpit outside with buckets and spades for this kids was a excellent addition (only summer). And just a little walk away they have an excellent play area which is very well maintained.

Caps Off is a hidden gem located in Bishop Auckland, offering a wide selection of locally brewed craft beers, ciders, and spirits. Tucked away in an industrial estate, this taproom provides a cozy atmosphere to enjoy your drink on-site or take it home. The brewery features a well-organized layout with seating options including tables, benches, and sofas along with patio heaters for comfort. On Saturdays, visitors can savor different food offerings from various vendors while occasionally enjoying live music performances.
Highly recommend Caps off. A bit tricky to find hidden away on an industrial estate but persevere because it’s class! We’ve been several times and service is always great. Staff are friendly, helpful and always grafting. They are super dog friendly with free water and treats readily available and even a dogs of the bar photo wall. The frozen strawberry daiquiris are fantastic! Food is outstanding and really well priced for the excellent quality. We’ve both eaten in and takeaway and never had any issue with orders or quality. It was crowded when we went for a gig but service was still very quick. Best bar in bish

Great craft beer bar with excellent food and a cracking venue for live events. All the food is handmade and cooked fresh with the great selection of beers brewed onsite. Everything from Belgian style sours to American IPAs. The staff are very helpful. Cheers!
Balefire L — Google review
Caps off brewery is very well laid out inside. Brewery on one side and then bar and kitchen on the other. Seating, there are tables and benches to sit on. There is also a sofa area as well. Inside there is plenty of patio heaters to keep the building warm. Bar wise, Caps Off own beers to chose from and they have a varied range and are always excellent beers. Food is rotational on a Saturday with different food vendors coming in. Saturday nights will occasionally host bands as well. It’s one of the best tap rooms around and is really worth the effort to find it.

1st night at Caps of for the Burns night ceilidh! Fabulous service sent a few messages and prompt to respond. Food was amazing and nice variety of unusual beers/ IPA's to try. Will definitely be back 😊

Enjoyed a visit to Caps Off brewery for their beer festival while staying in Witton-le-Wear for a holiday. A great selection of Caps Off beers plus some guest bears. A nice chilled atmosphere and good service from the bar staff. Would definitely return for more beer. Cheers 🍻

Total chaos for the event on Saturday afternoon/evening, 35 minutes plus to be served at the bar..... Food queue was disgraceful and we waited/ queued over 30 minutes for a very small burger with no fries, utterly shameful, £10 for the charity event..... This company needs to rethink how it manages events. Only positive was the live band,Ded wrongenz, fantastic end to the evening.

Great little brewery. Visited for a family christening as the after church celebration was here. Plenty of choice for the ales. I had the pale ale and it was fantastic. The buffet they provided was a mix of hot/cold choices and it was delicious. Plenty of parking available outside and a great location away from town.

Kynren, located in Bishop Auckland, is a captivating open-air show that unfolds 29 dramatic scenes portraying the history of Great Britain. The attraction's name, derived from the Anglo Saxon word Cynren meaning generation and family, perfectly aligns with its depiction of Arthur's discovery of his roots. Visitors can also explore The Spanish Gallery and 11Arches at this site. Additionally, nearby attractions like Bowes Museum and the town's ruined castle offer more historical insights.
A Spectacular spectical worthy of every great review it gets. Impressive, awe inspiring, magnificent, moving and many more way to describe the provocative show. Village is scenic, food stalls are fast and well organized. All the food and merchandise is reasonably priced. I would regret it if i diddnt come and see it.
Daniel F — Google review
The show was very entertaining and incredibly well put together. It's amazing that everyone is a volunteer. The viking village was also entertaining but could do with allowing people to enter earlier to avoid the massive queue.
Susan C — Google review
The show was absolutely fabulous, so well put together, the actors, the animals, the fireworks and lighting. The props and scenery was beautiful. lots of photo opportunities too! 100% will be coming to watch again and recommending every else does too! Take a coat or blanket as it did get cold later on. So I went bank holiday weekend so its no surprise it was rammed. Few points to mention on it being busy... - I'd get there early if you are wanting food and a table to eat at, gets very busy very quickly. - The seating is quite cramped and you are literally shoulder to shoulder and you have to keep getting up and walking off the row when people arrive to be seated as there is no room to walk by and certainly not safe enough to stand and lean over. - Make sure you get the shuttle so much easier to and from, especially as I took my 5 month old baby. Long ques but that is to be expected and made sure you drop a pin on maps where you're parked🫣 - The viking village was good, just wish there weren't so many people in, was really busy and hard to engage in anything as couldn't get close to the barriers to see much.
Jaimee B — Google review
The Kynren experience was amazing!! I went with my partner and family and loved it. We saw the live show/reenactment which was great. Seeing the volunteers riding the horses and charging them down the path and jousting the boards was fun to watch and the amazing water light show. Definitely going next year and going back in time watching the cast showing working and living life in past eras ❤️🔥✨️
Alison — Google review
I attended one of these shows last weekend, and while the performance itself was visually stunning and clearly the result of a huge amount of hard work, I felt very let down by the pre-show experience. The Viking Village — one of the things I was most looking forward to — had already closed well before the show began, which was really disappointing. On top of that, access to food and drink was extremely limited. What little was available either had very long queues or had already stopped serving. I also found it frustrating that the website states not to bring in a drink, reusable aluminium bottles are not allowed, so I was forced not to bring one. Once inside, I then couldn’t access a drink easily, which made the evening a lot less enjoyable. Be prepared to queue for almost an hour to access basic amenities. Another point worth mentioning is the seating. The stadium-style seats are very, very slim and uncomfortable, which made sitting through a long performance quite difficult. Finally, despite announcements asking people not to smoke, there were several e-cigarettes being used in the audience during the show. This was unpleasant and distracting, and it really took away from the experience. I completely understand that running large-scale events is challenging, but clearer communication about what is open and when — along with better access to basic amenities, more comfortable seating, and stricter enforcement of the no-smoking policy — would make a huge difference. I hope this feedback can help improve the experience for future visitors.

Absolutely brilliant.. probably best value for money ever.. good quality food reasonable prices .. gifts merchandise equally surprised at the prices... The transport from and took the car parks.. absolutely top noch.. couldn't fault anything at all
Caroline S — Google review
Kynren was hands down one of the most fascinating performances I’ve ever witnessed. From the moment it began, I was swept away by the colors, vibrancy, and sheer energy of the show. What amazed me most was how a simple, barren ground was transformed into a living, breathing stage full of life and history. The scale of the performance was breathtaking. The number of performers, the richness of the set, and even the real animals brought a sense of authenticity that made me feel like I had truly stepped back in time. The sight of horses galloping across the arena was simply spectacular and gave me goosebumps. Every detail was carefully thought out, and the production quality was outstanding. In totality, it was truly bang for your buck! A grand, immersive experience that stays with you long after it ends. A must-visit for everyone, whether you love history, theatre, or just want to be amazed.

Wow!!! What an amazing show. I want to come back every year. No ward work went unnoticed. To the actors, to behind the scenes, even the bin men! The fact this is all done by volunteers makes this even better!

Since moving here from London few months ago Never have I once liked anything I've bought in any take away shops in shildon till I went to this shop🫡 Food is great, my chicken wrap and chips was delicious. The staff is great each individual greated me with a smile and the wait wasn't long. Only regret is not getting a 3rd wrap. Unfortunately my nieces and nephew weren't asleep yet when I got in and my sister and I had to share😑

Great food tonight! We had a few different selections and they were all very good. Always good when the salad is fresh and crunchy. Ordered online and it was ready in the time specified. The shop was immaculate when we collected and the staff friendly.

This place is literally the cleanest food shop on the plant. The food is always really fresh, the chips are amazing and if you decide to stray away from the chippy menu, they do incredible pizzas. They put plenty of toppings on, oh and the chicken kebabs are honestly the best I've had in the North East

The ambiance of Pizza Zone is inviting and conducive to both casual gatherings and intimate dinners.
Called them up over pink, undercooked chicken in wraps and was immediately told that it was because of the "new sauce they do" in a semi-joking voice by a male employee. Take a look at the pics and judge for yourself. Not worth the risk ordering from here.

Order food at 1am said food had been delivered at 1:50am but hadnt, so rang up and they said it was still on its way. Got to 2:30am and rang up twice said the order was still out for delivery and that the woman was looking for our house number but went outside and saw no one. 3am ending up having to get a refund but they were very apologetic.

Paid just over £13 for this decided to take a photo after having one piece. I asked for an extra large kebab no pitta bread and some salad. I phoned up to tell them that it was more of a small or a medium and they said they cannot do nothing, because it’s how the boss made it. Took only 45 mins but still not enough food for the money. Used to be a ton for £9. Edit: gave me an upset stomach 1.5 hours after eating. Currently on the loo at 2.35am.

Ordered meat mix:….. DO NOT ORDER HERE You get the meat just dumped onto the chips so you get soggy, soaking wet greasy chips and they put your can of coke in the bag with the food After ignoring my special instructions on Uber eats to pack it separately I got them to redo it and they sent back a box of doner meat

Ordered a Parma and portion of kebab meat, both were nearly warm and the Parma how no béchamel sauce and large very large slices of onion under the cheese very disappointing
Jordan G — Google review
Have used this place for years. Ordered via their app as I’ve always done, this time no confirmation of order yet money taken from bank. Phoned shop and told “we don’t have an app”, let they advertise the app in their shop! The member of staff disbelieved me when I said I made order 6 days ago via the same app, he then hung up. Last time I got a pizza it was a stuffed crust, but all they did was make base thinner and roll it over on edges, there was nothing in the crust. Another time I found a big spider under a slice. Don’t use this place!
ワイスジョナサン・テイラー — Google review
30 minutes late, the kebab pizza was burnt to crisp and looked like it was rushed or somehow forgotten it was getting made, the cheesy chips was rank, barely any cheese on and the cheese that was on was burnt to crisp as well, they were all stuck together and if I picked up one chip I’d end up picking the whole box. The worst ever. Do not order
Lucas B — Google review
Got a bolognaise pizza. It didn't look terribly appetising but did taste a little better than it looked. Service wasn't terrible but wasn't fantastic either. No menus on the walls or counter so didn't know the price till I'd ordered 9 quid for a large bolognaise of this quality, I don't think I'll have that again.

I recently visited The Red Alligator, a restaurant known for its bustling atmosphere and live entertainment. The ambiance was delightful, with an enthusiastic lady captivating the entire pub by encouraging people to dance. If you're in the mood for a lively evening out, this place is ideal. To my surprise, I discovered that they offer online ordering as well; their contact number is 01388 605644.
What can I say! Wow! Came by chance on a Wednesday apprehensive in remembering how poor service I had received previously, but really glad to find out that new owners have transformed the atmosphere and menu. Steak night is amazing value at £24 for 2 steaks and a drink! Food was well presented, high quality beef and very well cooked and prepared. Will definitely be back to try the fantastic looking burgers and parmos! Thanks

I got a takeaway because I didn't have time to sit in before work and omg deans dinners are actually better than I remember them. Only tiny complaint is the turnip needs blitzing a little more but that's personal preference and you can please everyone. Everything else was cooked perfectly

Auckland Castle, part of The Auckland Project, was the private residence of the Prince Bishops of Durham for 800 years. It overlooks the River Wear and features St Peter's Chapel which holds many historical treasures. Visitors can also explore the Mining Art Gallery, Auckland Tower for panoramic views, and The Spanish Gallery with Salvador Dali's famous artwork. Additionally, nearby attractions include the Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle and its ruined castle.
Amazing place to visit full of history and interesting pieces. Absolutely loved the gardens and the museum in the palace where each room is about a bishop and a time period. Did not have enough time in a day so will return to visit the faith museum and the galleries.
Beccy E — Google review
No parking at the Palace, but parking available a short walk away. Beautiful building, amazing history, very enthusiastic volunteers (sometimes I felt pounced on), great cafe, large art collection. The lower floor of the faith museum was incredibly interesting, upstairs felt like a chill out rave experience when everyone else was on drugs and swept up in the atmosphere. Fortunately I wasn't invited to their party and made a quick exit.
Jo G — Google review
There is no parking at the palace. There is no castle. The tower is just a big metal structure. There is only one door in and out of the large walled gardens. When I went to the Faith museum, I was told to go see the gardens first and then come back. This makes no sense. The palace is listed on the English heritage map, but they don’t accept it. They said they would give me a 10% off a yearly discount only. It should be taken off to English heritage map. Not cool.
G M — Google review
Absolute gem, beautifully restored and presented, excellent information panels, but the room guides are quite exceptional - so well informed and interesting. The cafe and shop are first class too, and there’s so much more to see and discover, including the magnificent walled garden and Faith Museum. There’s so much more to see in Bishop Auckland market place, too. A whole day, minimum, is required!
Chris G — Google review
Such an iteresting place. The palace itself is a gem, the faith museum is unbelievably well designed and thought-out, the grounds are lovely (particularly the walled garden) and the staff couldn't be friendlier, more helpful or more knowledgeable. At first I thought £18 was a bit steep but I was proven wrong, it turned out to be very good value for such a great place. My only regret is that I didn't allocate more time for the visit (I spent 3 hours there, I could quite easily have spent another 2)

Home of Durham prince bishops for centuries. Second most powerful person in the country after the king, visit here to get the full story!! Still the bishops residence and now open to the public with large deer park attached and stunning interiors with incredible antique contents. Entry also includes access to two art galleries in town which are also not to missed

Fabulous Cultural Visits. The Auckland Project is a world-class group of attractions, including the Auckland (Bishops) Palace, formal gardens, Faith Museum, Spanish (art) Gallery, & Miners (art) Gallery. These are located off the central town square of Bishop Auckland, within 5 minutes flat walk from the North Bondgate car park (£4 for all-day parking). Entry is £18 per person covering all the collections (except the Miners Gallery, £8) - reasonable for such a range of attractions. This is a full day visit (or makes a good weekend trip). Located within the Palace complex is the new Faith Museum (the focus of this review), a beautiful new church shaped structure made from local natural stone. This explores the history of religious belief in Britain, from prehistory, Roman Britain, medieval times, the Reformation, the Great Revival of the 19th C, to the growth of multicultural Faith in the last 50 years. The curating is thoughtful & all the exhibits (drawn from across the UK's best collections) are really top quality, & the displays are modern & clear. The top floor houses special exhibitions of modern collections, including currently a video art installation. There is a nice cafe on the ground floor serving drinks, snacks, & light meals (£6 each for a home made quiche with salad). The Faith Museum is unique in the UK - & the Auckland Project as a whole is surely one of the best Museum complexes. Overall 10/10 rated.

Auckland Castle Deer House, located in the deer park of Auckland Castle, was constructed around 1760 for Bishop Richard Trevor. This listed building and scheduled monument is managed by English Heritage. The gothic-style structure serves as a shelter for the deer and adds to the post-medieval landscaped park's dramatic scenery. While visitors cannot enter the interior, it is still worth admiring from its perimeter.
Attended AGLOW light festival for the last 2 years and loved it. With a 10 and 14 year old we wanted something festive but a little more 'mature'. This ticked every box for every age group and would highly recommend it. Toilet facilities are on site and throughout the park. Paths are a little muddy and uneven in places but overall very well maintained. Able to purchase refreshments at additional cost and a bonus was we were able to take our dog along for the festive fun!

Park is free to the public and a lovely walk through a tranquil setting unfortunately we didn't see any deer which I'm not sure if that was due to the time we were there, but definitely recommend if you want a dog friendly park in a quiet location.

Aglow event - amazing evening we will be returning. We loved it all from the lights to the Santa village. It was clean and tidy and staff were friendly and helpful.

Lovely place we walked around the grounds & along the river we had our dog so didn't go into the castle. & didn't get to see the deer this time but it's a really good day out & would definitely go back again

Lovely place to wander amongst veteran trees and riverside grasslands. Deer house offers an interesting glimpse into the history of the place.

We recently visited Auckland House – also known as the Deer House – and it’s an absolute hidden gem nestled within the beautiful grounds of Auckland Castle in Bishop Auckland. Whether you’re a local or just passing through the area, this spot is well worth a visit — peaceful, historic, and surrounded by nature. The Deer House itself is a unique Grade II listed building, originally built in the 18th century to provide shelter and feeding for deer, but also to serve as a charming viewing point for the Bishop of Durham. It has a fascinating blend of practical function and architectural elegance, and it’s great to see it so well preserved and accessible to the public. The surrounding parkland is stunning — ideal for a relaxing walk, picnic, or simply to enjoy some time away from the hustle and bustle. There are clear paths, scenic views, and plenty of wildlife, making it a lovely day out for families, couples, or anyone who enjoys the outdoors. It’s brilliant to see heritage like this maintained and appreciated. Auckland House (Deer House) is a testament to the rich history of the area, and we’re lucky to have something so special right on our doorstep.

Tea house
Nestled in the heart of Bishop Auckland, Fifteas Vintage Tea Room is a delightful destination that transports you back to the charm of the 1950s. With its enchanting vintage decor and an inviting atmosphere, this tearoom offers a menu filled with scrumptious cakes, bakes, and light lunches that are sure to please any palate. On Sunday afternoons, guests can enjoy live music while sipping on their favorite tea or coffee.
Lovely lunch with family on a great atmosphere. The tea rooms were buzzing with people, happily chatting and enjoying food. The teas are served on vintage teapot, which I loved, and the food was home made and in rather big portions. Will be back. Thank you x
Kinga L — Google review
The staff were exceedingly friendly and courteous. The delightful decorations truly evoked a sense of stepping back in time. It was disappointing that my poached egg was overcooked, and that the full breakfast included only one sausage and one rasher of bacon.
Andrew H — Google review
50s Tea room was stepping a bit back in time. The staff had great customer service, attentive & smiles. The dress & ration books used for the menus has a nice personal touch, with the decor. I had todays special of feta and red pepper quiche with sweet potato fries & hubby had smoked salmon & cream cheese sandwich with chunky chips. 2 diet cokes came to £27.30 The portion sizes are small compared to other cafes. In Market square, Bishop Auckland.

Called into Fifties Vintage Tea room while out cycling last week. It’s like stepping back in time. Service was superb, staff were super friendly and the scones were fab. What’s not to like😀

Excellent fifties themed tea room. Booked a day in advance to get gluten free afternoon tea which was so big we had to take some away. Great atmosphere with friendly staff even though they were busy on Saturday afternoon.
Graddy 6 — Google review
Visited the fifties tea room this afternoon to treat my friend to lunch whose birthday it was and what an undiscovered precious place this is. The decor is beautiful and has a timeless charm about it. The staff couldn’t do enough for us and the gentleman who served our food was just lovely and ever so pleasant. The food itself was absolutely gorgeous, piping hot and came with a stunning array of a colourful and fresh side salad. We were stuffed, but the various cakes on display looked delicious and more than tempting. We’ll definitely be back for that cake and I’d highly recommend.

Really friendly staff, live singer performing and food was good too.

Just had the most delicious afternoon tea. As afternoon teas go it is certainly one of the best. The lemon posset was to die for, alongside a huge selection of cake and dainties and obviously sandwiches. Top marks. Staff were wonderful and all talked round to ensure our mam was positioned comfortably in her wheelchair . All served in china crockery, fashionably mismatched. Wonderful afternoon.

Points of Interest & Landmarks
Binchester Roman Fort, located in County Durham, is an archaeological site with ruins of a Roman fort, settlement, and bathhouse dating back to AD 79. It is the largest Roman fort in the county and offers a family-friendly experience with seasonal openings. Visitors can explore the excavated part of the fortress and learn about its military history through informative information boards. The site also features a shop and opportunities for activities such as mosaic creations for children.
It's definitely worth visiting the site. It has a best preserved roman bath house. Very educational. Not a dog friendly site unfortunately.

Very nice, small area. 2 bathhouse but not much else. The bathhouses are very well preserved There were 3 other people there at the same time
Mary P — Google review
This place is a little treasure! A small part of this huge Roman fort, which lies on the old Roman road Dere St, has been uncovered. You can visit part of two Roman bath houses and see typical features such as a hypocaust heating system and plunge pools. It is amazing to think that so many building still lie beneath the surface over such a large area. There are helpful information points and some fun activities for children in the holidays. Great stuff!
Victoria P — Google review
A great hidden gem. It's not a huge site, but they are excavating it still I think. There's loads uncovered in the last 20years and now can see the bathhouse complex from above and below. Well curated and some neat little insights with the footprints cast from the Roman era. Also happened to visit when there was a reenactment and that was great, so look out for days with events too!
Simon B — Google review
A great little local attraction, that packs a lot on for such a small site. Without attractions being there you'd typically spend around an hour - an hour and a half per visit (children dependant). There is a shed for some children's activities to take place, such as mosaic creations. Entrance was £6 per adult and £4 per child. There is a concession for others too. There are toilets available at the site, but they are only portaloos, and not an enclosed brick building.

Great little place pa ked both history. Roman re-enactment on today
Marie S — Google review
Absolutely ingredible place to visit. Visited this place as we where staying close by for the weekend. I have seen a few Roman fortifications over the years, including most of Hadrians wall. However this was just something else. It is the most preserved Roman bath house in the UK at almost 2000 years old. It really is an amazing place and so beautifully preserved. Mark the site manager is a pleasure to talk to, and has a wealth of knowledge about the site and its history. At only £5 per person, I can highly recommend a visit.
Del M — Google review
Quite an amazing experience. It is incredible the work carried out to achieve these finds. It's like walking into the Roman past. Highly recommended visit. There is currently an archaeological dig on site too which is most interesting. Thanks to all the lovely people on the archaeological site who made me feel so welcomed and to Stephen who showed me around the site.

Thai restaurant
If you're on the hunt for an authentic Thai dining experience, look no further than Chang Thai Restaurant in Bishop Auckland. This gem captures the essence of Thailand with its vibrant flavors and generous portions, making it a delightful choice for any meal. The restaurant is situated on the second floor, offering a bright and airy atmosphere along with lovely views of the marketplace. While some recent visitors have noted that service can be a tad slow at times, many rave about the excellent staff who are attentive to every detail.
Would highly recommend. I got the pineapple fried rice as I used to get this alot when I was in Thailand and it did not disappoint. Really reasonably priced meals and drinks, well under what the bill would have been at Zen or The Rabbit Hole. Food was so good, can't wait to come back and try the Phad Thai.
Andrew D — Google review
Very lovely experience at Chang Thai, the staff were amazing and very accommodating to all little details and needs. Cater for coeliacs/gluten free, though I found the restaurant menu a little confusing compared to the one I saw online. The food was absolutely delicious! My friend said it was the best Pad Thai she’s ever had! Would recommend!

I don’t know much about Thai food but my brother does and it was his treat. Apparently very authentic. I know it was very tasty and fragrant. A nice lighter change to an Indian curry. Room was bright, airy and had a beautiful view of the market place. Service was spot on and it was good value. A must on any visit to Bishop. Their website needs updating.
Westphalian — Google review
The food was very good. The restaurant is on the second floor of the building, located in the centre of Bishop. The staff is from Thailand and the food tastes very similar to the food you can eat in Thailand. I spent a month in Thailand and I was missing some Thai food and I would recommend this place. Prices are reasonable, and the portions are big.
Roberto G — Google review
We dined here this evening and it was most disappointing given the outstanding reviews. The main issue for both of us was the extremely dry chicken in both dishes. We ordered a red curry and a stir fry the red curry did taste lovely but the stir fry tasted of zero flavour which was supposed to be a ginger dish which was totally lacking in ginger. There was zero atmosphere and the room was lovely but not very cosy. We also had to pay on leaving as no one came with the bill. Overall very disappointing
Claire T — Google review
Good Food, But Unacceptable Wait Time I ordered takeaway an hour in advance, expecting to pick it up at the time they advised. However, upon arrival, I was made to wait another 45 minutes before finally receiving my order. I understand that they were busy, but if they give a specific pickup time, the expectation is that the food will be ready—or at least close to ready—when I arrive. Instead, there was just a quick apology, and that was it. That being said, the food itself was great, which makes it all the more frustrating. If they could manage their timing better, this would be an easy recommendation, but as it stands, the long and unpredictable wait dampened the experience.

Pub
Gastropub
The Stanley Jefferson, a pub in Bishop Auckland, is named after the famous comic actor Stan Laurel. The establishment offers a unique dining experience with its sectioned-off areas that create an intimate atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy traditional British fare such as fish and chips along with a pint of beer. The pub also features displays about Jefferson's connection to the area, including his time at school in Bishop Auckland and his role as one half of the iconic Laurel and Hardy duo.
This was a superb pub for drinking, with an underground style layout! The counter is well presented too and glass roof is pleasant, staff were friendly. I enjoyed an IPA beer, sitting comfortably at a clean table!

I thought I was in a different pub then wetherspoon. The food was actually tasty and well presented ( Burrito salad bowl) I had. The tables were clean. Staff made conversation & polite. The seating area separately from the bar. I will definitely come back here again. All for £26.26 with drinks.
Anne S — Google review
Love spoons but when someone is clearly drunk, they shouldn't be served any more - as the law states. It was made worse when he randomly came over to talk to us. I don't want random drunks talking to me while I'm eating ffs Staff were great, Food was what you expect and the place was lovely. Just lose the drunks.
Simon H — Google review
Great value for money, a meal and a drink for less than a tenner. There's a garden out the back for warmer weather. Food is OK. I have never seen CCTV cameras in a public toilet, if youbwant some privacy, while you use the bathroom, I suggest using the cubicles as the cameras are just above the urinals. What do they do with the footage!?!

Large spacious Wetherspoons in the Market Place at Bishop Auckland. Quiet in the mornings for breakfast, but they have some breakfast deals and food deals which other Wetherspoons do not. Staff are pleasant and the food is served fast. My only issue is the heating is not as warm as it should be.
Andrew D — Google review
I’m 17 with a child I came to Wetherspoons to get some food however was told to leave due to needing a parent even though I am her parent. It was around 4pm on a Monday we weren’t doing anything at all just sat eating my food she wasn’t crying. Will never come again yes it’s not ideal being a young mam but being segregated because of it is ridiculous I do well raising my child and I’m extremely offended by this

To be fair the service that was provided was prompt & professional. The table where we sat was rotten, as was about 5 or 6 tables in the same area. We cleaned our own. Ordered the food and drink accordingly. Sat & waited a short period of time. While we drank our coffee. The coffee from the machine was only a tad more than warm, which in all honesty was a dam sight warmer than the breakfast. Beans, were stone cold, fried eggs, were more raw than cooked, sausages, cold, black pudding, warm, bacon, cold, the toast was the warmest thing on the plate. I ate half a slice of toast, half a sausage, 2 fork full of beans and left the rest. It was awful. The other breakfast was left after a mouthful of toast, a mouthful of sausage, (then put back on the plate). Half a piece of bacon eaten. By far the worst food I've eaten in a long time. Absolutely dreadful. Defo not recommended. Even the people were on the dirty tables waiting for their services were wishing they hadn't ordered. This was the parting comments between us, as we left the venue. It cost us nearly £15 to clean a dirty table, order some dreadful food, then leave. We left Wetherspoons and went to Sainsbury's, to which I made a hasty retreat for the toilet where I got to say hello to my breakfast again. Absolutely awful.

We visited here , en route to the kynren , which was right by the shuttle bus pick up point , the food was delicious , succulent flavoursome boneless chicken , raman noodles served quickly & piping hot , was pretty busy but for such a large establishment ,it didn't feel overly so ,we couldn't get over the prices , such value for money . Staff friendly & cleared the table from the previous diners swiftly when asked . Bar staff friendly & very efficient .

Low Barns Nature Reserve and Visitor Centre is a true gem nestled in County Durham, showcasing the region's commitment to wildlife conservation. Originally farmland, this area has been transformed by the Durham Wildlife Trust into a thriving sanctuary for various species. The reserve features flat terrain and accessible bird hides, making it an ideal spot for nature enthusiasts of all ages.
What an absolute gem of a nature reserve on a beautiful winter's day. There are really good hides from which to view birds on the lake, 1.3 mile walk round and accessible path with a mobility scooter too. Free to visit, but a donation I'm sure is greatly appreciated. Friendly and helpful staff in the cafe, with good food, reasonably priced. Will definitely visit again.

Spent a lovely Saturday morning in March here. Parking is free for Durham WT members or a requested £2.50 for visitors. Very reasonable when you consider how much it is to go in RSPB reserves so please pay. Unfortunately it was one of these pay with your phone mularkeys, which did not work for us, so we put a donation in the container in the cafe. The carpark is not massive and it is obviously a popular place. Lots of hides, with information, around the walk. Paths are flat and easy , suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. Cafe is down to earth and the staff were lovely. Toilets inside. Dogs are allowed on a lead - unfortunately not everyone thinks that applies to their dogs!😡 Lots of bird life both in the trees and on the water. High light of our visit was a white egret. Strava said we'd done 2 miles at the end of it but we did do every path and some of the extras to see the beautiful river Wear which runs alongside. An accessible for all site. It was a very pleasant morning and I am sure that we will return.
Liz H — Google review
Gem of a reserve, family friendly, nice cafe, good toilets, quite a few hides, great for the kids with little legs, benches evenly spaced with fun facts on them. As a seasoned birder I saw some excellent birds too, very well recommended.

Fantastic place to visit. Low Barns is a Durham hidden gem. It's free to get in, but donations can be given. The walk at Low Barns is a pretty simple circular loop that can be taken in either clockwise or anticlockwise directions. There are plenty of hides around the area, perfect for those looking to do some wildlife/bird spotting. It's never been overly busy when I have been here. There is a cafe/visitor centre here also, never been in however so I cannot comment on its quality and or benefits.

Witton Castle holiday park provides a wonderful opportunity to immerse oneself in nature while also enjoying the comforts of the indoor castle. Guests can relax beside a warm fireplace and indulge in refreshments. Various activities are available, including dining on fish and chips or visiting the coffee shop, which offers a dedicated kids' area. Additionally, there is a snack bar with a children's play area, as well as a bar restaurant. The park features fishing ponds surrounded by wooded areas, adding to its charm.
Didn't stay here but have used the cafe, country park and lake activities. Lovely location, loads of parking. I run with my dog here and amazingly beautiful location, really well maintained and the lake activities are really well run. Staff are all lovely and friendly. Although inside the cafe is no dogs (apart from to order, there is loads of seating area outside with water bowls, my dog particularly loves their 'dog sausages!'. Highly recommend and one of my favourite places.

The castle is a beautiful location and has amazing views, I have been many times with my husband and kids and had a lovely time with service however I am appalled by the lack of professionalism I encountered today. The red haired lady that served me in the bar made it apparent that she didn’t want to be there. There was not politeness and actually was talking and laughing to her co worker about me while I was stood right there. I saw her speak to multiple other customers the same way and as someone who has worked in hospitality before I know that this is not the standard at all.
Sharon W — Google review
Absolutely lovely location for a holiday. Lovely walks around the castle to see the farm area surrounding, and one of the only places I've been which has so many poo bins. Cannot fault, and would come again

Stunning site, acres to explore, plenty to do for all ages. Dog friendly, fishing lakes, nature trails, streams and waterfalls, play ground, wild swimming, water activities, paddleboarding, canoes, country market every month, restaurant serves superb food. The Park is immaculately kept. After looking at every holiday park within 50 miles of Teesside, nothing else compared. Witton Castle is a hidden gem 🥰
Claire P — Google review
We recently spent a weekend at Witton Castle Country Park, and the castle itself was the highlight. This richly historic, Grade II* listed gem dates back to the early 15th century, rebuilt and restored over centuries – and today it forms the heart of a vibrant holiday park set in 330+ acres of woodland, lakes, and activity areas . The castle’s crenellated towers and fortified walls create the perfect backdrop to a uniquely charming park. It’s clear the caretakers work hard to preserve the structure, with the exterior and grounds looking well-maintained and inviting . You can wander through castle grounds and enjoy panoramic views amidst the architecture. During our stay in a modern, well-equipped caravan, we appreciated the peaceful surroundings and the friendly staff who were especially great with kids . On-site facilities include a café, bar, fish-and-chip shop, playgrounds, soft play, lakes with paddleboards and fishing — so there’s something for all ages . Families will love the relaxed vibe, tranquil woodlands, and castle charm blending history with holiday fun. Whether you’re strolling the lawns or launching a kayak, this place balances heritage and leisure beautifully. Witton Castle Country Park offers a memorable break—historic, serene, and family-friendly. Highly recommended!

Absolutely brilliant site. Friendly atmosphere in the castle, lots of walks and scenery to look at, nature (peacocks, squirrels & rabbits to name a few) is beautiful to see. Caravans are absolutely lovely. Alongside this, it is a lovely location, a 10 min drive to the shops and lovely countryside along the way. Additionally, there is a consistently lovely fish and chips shop which never disappoints. My only complaint is the very large potholes along the exit route. Other than that a brilliant site. Would recommend to everyone.

Sights & Landmarks
Churches & Cathedrals
Nestled in the picturesque Escomb Village, just a stone's throw from Bishop Auckland, lies the remarkable Escomb Saxon Church. This historic site is celebrated as one of England's oldest and most complete Anglo-Saxon churches, with its origins tracing back to around 670 AD. Constructed using stones sourced from the nearby Roman fort at Binchester, some of which still bear ancient markings, this church offers a unique glimpse into early Christian history.
I had an unplanned stop here on my motorcycle tour. Sadly not too many Saxon churches left so was keen to see this from a historical perspective. I am not in anyway religious but this is an amazing historical site. Beautiful design and quaint location.
Andy J — Google review
Beautiful church, unfortunately surrounded by a mix of modern properties. Key available from outside one of them (details at the church). If you enjoy churches and history a must visit.
Jo G — Google review
A little gem of history about one and a half miles off the A68 is well worth a visit. It's dated around 660 AD and listed as the oldest complet Saxon church in the UK. It has an amazing atmosphere and can be accessed by a visit to house number 28 (directly behind the church) where the church keys hang outside the front door. No need to knock take and use them return when you have experience the amazing atmosphere inside. There are a number of interesting features and architectural treats. Sorry I didn't take any photos inside but I felt it wasn't appropriate at the time as this is very much a living church and folks were inside praying. The church is at the end of the village in a walled are that has a circular road around it. Drive carefully as houses surround the road and church and the village school has to be passed on the way in. There is a small car park on the right hand side as you approach the church, the entrance is quite tight. Access by less able folk is reasonable with a slight walk up an incline and reasonably smooth paths to the church door. Its not a tourist trap and so I don't believe there are any facilities but you can donate via card at a machine by the entrance. Well worth a detour if you are in the area. Enjoy.

Stumbled upon this delight. Fluffy and light pizzas. A wide range of toppings. Lovely drinks. Reasonable prices. You can order using a QR code and the food comes quickly. It’s a really decent spot.

Oh yes. This pizza is so good, especially the goats cheese pesto - absolutely delicious. Light , bubbly, nicely charred crust and plenty of toppings. Very modern inside and tables outside for when it's fine. Cocktails looked great and reasonable cost too. Sadly it is closed monday to weds though. Was very busy when we walked past on Sunday morning with people eating breakfast. Lots of free car parking nearby roadside.

I've been dying to try this place for months and finally got my chance for breakfast. Annoyingly we've spent our time heading to durham for breakfast. Wasting time with parking, traffic and crowded cafes. Breakfast at Knead A slice had none of that and offered a much more relaxed dining experience. The cafe has a modern vibe, fantastic coffee, a great beer selection and a menu that's brilliant. The food is well prepared and of a good quality. We will be returning for breakfast and we'll leave durham to the students.

Great place, nice atmosphere and very friendly staff. Great coffer but the doner pizza I had was tremendous. 5 stars easily.

Truly magnificent experience from a warm welcoming, to a truly magical pizza. Owners sincerely give a second hand on making sure every element is well taken care off. The Cuban pizza is truly something magical!! Would highly recommend visiting other specials if visiting!

Nice little café in Bishop Auckland. If you enjoy traditional English breakfasts then I'd recommend their Big Boy Breakfast. You will not leave hungry or unhappy. Quick service and reasonable value. Definitely worth a visit.

2 families came together here before heading to Kynren. We parked over the road. Decent menu of pizzas, service was quick especially given how busy it was. All the staff were great and friendly. Would highly recommend for something decent especially with kids.

El Castillo is a standout tapas restaurant located in Bishop Auckland, offering an authentic taste of Spain right in the heart of this charming town. Nestled within The Auckland Project's revitalization efforts, it serves up exquisite small plates crafted from fresh ingredients sourced from the nearby 17th Century Walled Garden at Auckland Castle. This delightful eatery is perfect for a romantic evening or a fun night out with friends.
First visit for my daughter's birthday and the chef did a special addition to our desserts for her. Great food, wine, cocktails and Katie our server was lovely. We're going to make this a girls thing monthly at least! A definite 10 out of 10 all round. And, I had no problems due to my food allergies.
Tanya T — Google review
Was given this as a recommendation by two people that we met at different times whilst staying on holiday near Copley. The recommendations weren't wrong! The food was excellent and the front of house staff - all youngsters - were very good. Nice to see a restaurant with appropriate wines - only Spanish, Portuguese and Argentinian. It seemed quiet for a Friday night but we are from NW London so are used to places being much busier. If you are ever near Bishop Auckland then give this restaurant a try.

Called today for a business lunch and wow absolutely beautiful many thanks and the pork was easily the best I’ve ever tasted, easy 5 stars so pleased your in our Town. Staff were great it’s immaculate and the decor is fab also the Santiago cake was unreal as it all was really 👌

Superb lunch at El Castillo. The friendly staff squeezed us in as we hadn't booked (recommend you do, it's popular!). Ordered a variety of tasty tapas dishes, great sized portions and perfectly presented. Yum! A proper little gem in Bishop Auckland's northern quarter. In the immortal words of Arnold, "I'll be back ".

We received a warm welcome and found everyone who works here is really lovely, attentive and professional. The restaurant has a really lovely vibe, which makes the evening even more enjoyable. The menu is fab and offers an excellent variety. The decor is soothing and relaxing and the lighting at the right point with gentle music in the background. We really enjoyed our evening here, we were off to the very popular comedy club in the town hall so it is amazing to have such a quality restaurant in close proximity. We enjoyed it so much we have already booked our next visit to El Castillo. Thank you to all team members, you are all doing an amazing job.

Lovely food in a comfortable environment. And the fact that it's part of the Auckland Project makes it even more special.

Our first visit on Sunday was amazing. Authentic Spanish Tapas and the staff were attentive, professional and very friendly. I can highly recommend but if you have an allergy with worries about cross-contamination issues, I would recommend you phone in advance. My issue was a restricted menu choice, due to the kitchen only having one fryer working, which was used for everything! So, with an allergy to shellfish, the restaurant wasn’t able to serve me anything that was fried. Nevertheless, we will return!
Jill C — Google review
The decorations and the presentation of the food was exquisite. The taste was also lovely and the mocktail I got was lovely. One staff member was a bit hasty to clear out plates when we weren’t finished which was strange because the restaurant was empty however he didn’t seem to have ill intent and we weren’t annoyed by it. Also a good location close to the castle. Would reccommend

During a stopover on the way to Scotland, guests were assigned room 9 at The Saxon Inn. This particular room offered all the necessary amenities and more, ensuring a comfortable stay. The cleanliness of the room was impeccable, and it appeared to have been recently refurbished. The inn is situated in a charming area with picturesque walks along the river and a vast lake brimming with wildlife.
A lovely quiet pub/ hotel. The rooms and facilities are fantastic! The staff were incredibly helpful and polite, the food was brilliant and the portions were man sized! We were very surprised with the price! It would have been cheap at twice the price! Unfortunately we were only there for 1 night but the next time we are working in the area we will certainly be booking again!!! Glad I found the Saxon inn 👍 thank you to all the staff 👍

Great pub/inn with amazing food, great atmosphere, and music in a nice quiet location. First of all, shout out to Bev, she made my stay feel great, very friendly, helpful, and accommodating. All staff were amazing, just didn't catch their names. Great location, green everywhere you look around. Very quiet as well. Limited parking on site but plenty available on roads outside. Food was amazing, with great portions, just tasty homemade food, and it tasted it. Room was very clean and had more amenities than a 5 star hotel in the middle of a busy city, great bathroom, good water pressure in the shower, smart TV with multiple streaming apps installed, great comfy bed AND a truly room controlled thermostat! Overall, it was a fantastic experience, and if I'm ever in the area again, I will definitely be back! Thank you Saxon Inn

We visited here on a Sunday without reservation, and seem that we were lucky to get seated as by the time our meal was put on the table, the room we were in was full. The staff were all really friendly and the food was really tasty and quality. We had the mixed Sunday roast with extra veg and roasties. We would definitely go again. Thank you. Can’t comment on the rooms, but everywhere downstairs was clean and well presented.

Bishops Lodge is a culinary gem that promises an unforgettable dining experience. Known for its generous portions and delicious offerings, the mix grill is a standout dish that leaves even the heartiest eaters satisfied. The scampi also receives rave reviews for its quality and size. Guests appreciate the warm, friendly service provided by staff like Zach, who enhances the relaxed atmosphere with his local insights.
Just had our first meal here and it was lovely. Delicious food - fish and chips was cooked beautifully, and so were the chicken goujons. The whole place is nicely decorated - super tunes playing too! Will definitely be back

Delicious food, generous portions. The Chef discussed his latest Burger creation with our group, and it was a winner. The atmosphere was relaxed and the staff were friendly and couldn't do enough to help. Special mention to Zach, who was a great host and spoke so positively about the area and the local folks. If you want tasty food, cold beer and a relaxed atmosphere, head to Bishops Lodge

Visited here for the first time recently with my brother, uncle and Marley (a very energetic cocker spaniel) who were visiting us. We were all very impressed with the food both at lunchtime and in the evening. Everything was freshly cooked, delicious and the portions were very generous. We ate in the dog-friendly area which was spotlessly clean and spacious. Marley was looked after very well and he loved his doggy sausage. All the staff were extremely friendly and made sure that everything was okay and responded quickly to any requests we had. Thank you especially to Carla, Zac and Abi for looking after us so well. My family has returned home now, but my husband and I will definitely be returning in the near future (sans dog!).

We have been regulars here as a family for over a year. The standards of service, food quality, and value for money are second to none. Well done to the chefs, the floor staff, and everyone involved in running this business.

Had a very pleasant meal here. Tasty food, with plenty of vegetarian options to choose from. Nice atmosphere with background music at the right volume to easily have a conversation. Friendly staff. Excellent value too – we got the Tuesday deal, which was a free dessert with each main meal. Particularly impressed by the tart tatin!
Sarah S — Google review
Staff so pleasant and helpful despite a very busy service (everyone going to Kynren) and an obnoxious customer demanding to be served first 🙄. Wait for food was not too long (given how busy it was), and portions were hot and plentiful. Would definitely come back again.
Dennise S — Google review
A truly awful meal if you could even call it that. A Sunday roast with one potato each. Pork so over salted it was inedible! Requested a coke and lemon, apparently this pub has no lemon? Requested a bottled beer but apparently they don’t have that either? Requested a ginger beer but guess what, none of that either?? So no drink with my micro roast! Served with a gravy boar of what looked like baby food. Fortunately another customer asked what that was and apparently it’s their speciality orange and grey cheese sauce with a bit of random cabbage thrown in! Enough vegetables to keep a hamster happy for twenty minutes! Topped off by a small Coca Cola for £3:50!! Never again and enter at your peril or if you enjoy rancid food and rude adolescent staff!

Killhope Lead Mining Museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the life of Victorian lead miners, allowing visitors to step back in time and explore the depths of an old mine. Nestled in Upper Weardale, this unique attraction features engaging displays that highlight the region's rich mining history. Guests can also experience what it was like to be a washer boy above ground while discovering various minerals. The museum is home to a remarkable working waterwheel and provides opportunities for wildlife spotting, including adorable red squirrels.
Great day out at KillHope lead mining museum. Last time I was here I would of been 11 year old(many moons ago) Decided to take the kids for a day out and we weren’t disappointed. The whole experience was well worth the drive. Going into the old mine tunnels was definitely the highlight for me. The kids loved looking for galena and other types of minerals that are found around this area. Galena when smelted turns into lead, it’s a very pretty in colour. Staff are really good here, they have a wealth of knowledge about the mine and area. It is also currently free entrance.
S A — Google review
We was holidaying in the area and found this on a things to do list, we thought this would be worth doing as never visited a mine before and be interesting to see what it's like and the conditions people worked in, I was surprised to see this was free entry as I would of definitely paid to visit. We was here around 2.5 hours first looking around the museum then the old living areas and lead washing, we then met our tour guide and got kitted up in hats and torches whilst he told us some old stories and facts before entering the mines, we thoroughly enjoyed the tour made all the better by the guide who I think had alot of passion for his job but had the perfect amount of facts to banter ratio and kept it interesting throughout. I'd definitely reccomend this but don't forget your wellies or you can't go down the mine.
Tom K — Google review
Excellent museum with interest for adults and children alike, set in the beautiful Weardale countryside. Red squirrels visit here too. Good little cafe and toilets on site next to a well stocked gift shop. Free entry at present, a lot of conservation work happening so some access is restricted.
Graham R — Google review
Fascinating place and highly recommended. Staff were incredibly friendly and kindly shared some amazing stories of the conditions the miners faced and the background to the mine and its workings. The food is very yummy. The fact that it's FREE entry is amazing too. No need to pre-book - just rock up! Surrounded by beautiful countryside. Kids absolutely loved it (as did we adults) and would thoroughly recommend you visit!
Simon N — Google review
A fascinating look at lead mining on the 19th century. There's a nice museum, nice little cafe access to most of the site with helpful staff to explain the workings. You can also go underground but we didn't as we had our dog with us. Access to the site and the museum is free. Definitely worth a visit.
Bill R — Google review
Fantastic museum. Staff helpful and very knowledgeable. Mine tour was amazing - really brought home the awful conditions that the miners had to work in. The Showman pavilion exhibition with the fluorescent light changes of the various minerals was really fun to see. Nice cafe too. Really worth a visit.
Irene B — Google review
Visited midweek out of school holidays and it was lovely and quiet. We brought our 6 month old baby, pushed him around in our all terrain pram and didn’t struggle. There was plenty of free parking, and entrance is free. We probably only spent an hour here including having a coffee but it was still an interesting visit.
M T — Google review
A real hidden gem. There was no queue to enter. Totally free access and parking. Very informative guides informing you on the history of the site and how lead is mined and made. Lots of other interesting information on the different types of chrystals. Lovely walk around the site. There's a bird hide and a squirrel hide. We saw a good number of different birds. Sadly the squirrel hide was out of bounds when we visited.

Nestled in the heart of Bishop Auckland, The Spanish Gallery is a must-visit destination for art enthusiasts and culture lovers alike. This remarkable venue is the UK’s first gallery dedicated to Spanish art, history, and culture, showcasing an impressive collection of 16th and 17th-century masterpieces from renowned artists like Velazquez, El Greco, and Murillo.
Impressive gallery with a wide range of original Spanish Masters (Velázquez, Murillo etc), not just paintings but wooden sculptures and carvings. Also some excellent Dutch and Italian works. Some of the works on the top floor are (very high quality) reproductions. Not what you expect to find in a small County Durham town... The attendants are well-informed and happy to provide information if requested. Definitely worth a visit! Buy all-site tickets online for a small discount - plus the tickets last for 12 months!

Wow! Where do I start? The UKs first Art Gallery & culture dedicated to Spanish Art from the Golden Age. The Haburgs & different versions of depicting of Christ, the virgin Mary & Jesus. Famous artists like alot of work by El Greco & other lesser known artists. There is a sculpture of Jesus created by a woman the only one in the gallery. Bishop Auckland is on the map with the world with the loaning of paintings & vice versa. There are 4 floors and it took my hubby & I 2 & half hours. We were in awe. Definitely will be back. There is a lift to all floors, as a wheelchair ♿️ user is brilliant. The staff were absolutely brilliant and knowledgeable & answered any questions we had, Gill and Jeremy especially. There is a cafe but did not go in this time. Toilets. The cost is £12.95 entrance but carer goes in free, you need to show proof. Again, an absolute wow factor. There is parking outside, but as a blue badge holder parking is free for 3 hours.

Really loved the gallery, but disappointed that you have to have a tour. Although it was interesting it did last an hour and a half which I found quite a long time. I would have liked to spend more time looking at certain paintings and less on others. We were told that we were unable to separate from the group. I would love to come back, however not whilst it is tour only.

This was an outstanding gallery experience. Stunning works beautifully displayed with a friendly, knowledgeable and engaging team in situ. This gallery combined with a visit to the Faith Museum nearby would make for a great morning visit to Bishop Auckland and the castle.

Phenomenal visit to the Spanish Gallery at Bishop Auckland today; spectacular paintings, beautifully restored, displayed and lit. The Mining Art Gallery, located within The Auckland Project in County Durham, offers a captivating exploration of the region's coal mining heritage. Through its intimate and moving collection of artwork, visitors gain insight into the lives and communities of Northeastern coal miners. The gallery provides a unique opportunity to appreciate the bravery and culture of those who worked in the coal mining industry.
A very interesting gallery of an often neglected genre of British art, namely 'pitmen painters', many of whose best members were based in NE England, and who documented this vital but eventually doomed industry through their work. The "Orgreave after Guernica" painting is very impressive and evocative. Many of the attendants seem to be ex-miners and are happy to chat to and give info to visitors. Included in the £27 Auckland all-site ticket, which I recommend buying rather than individual sites.

My friend brought me here as a treat; ticket to the mining gallery includes visit to the tower and castle too. Beautiful selection of mining themed artwork with very knowledgeable and friendly staff. This is well worth a visit. Check out the magazine too. Shop with postcard prints onsite.
Virginia O — Google review
A very well laid out and evocative museum. The way the paintings are thematically organised and displayed on the three floors takes you on a (this probably sounds very cheesy) journey through time and light. The museum begins underground and then you travel upwards to life on the surface, into houses and then wider communities. As well as paintings and drawings, and artefacts, there is a 5 minute short film and we were lucky enough to have a talk by one of the volunteers about a painting she finds very interesting. The corridor can be a bit tight for wheelchair users, but the lift is spacious. The price (£5.00 for adults and £4.00 for concessions) is very reasonable considering the calibre of artwork and professionalism of the staff who were all happy to talk about artwork and mining. As some of the paintings change as they move to and from different museums around the country, I'll probably return in 6 months or so when there are different pieces on display. There are no photos from the inside as photography is forbidden, and it's probably best going when you don't quite know exactly what will be on display and what you'll hear as you go round.

Fabulous art . A must for all visitors to the area.

A small gallery of three permanent and one temporary exhibition space displays some beautiful and often moving work. The gallery does not allow photography and doesn’t have a catalogue available to purchase. Their postcard display was scant and did not reflect the collection. We came away with no reference material which always helps with further study. This was in sharp contrast their sister galleries, Faith and Spanish which allowed photography and offered a very comprehensive selection of catalogues and pictures to buy.

The Auckland Project, a charitable organization, offers an array of remarkable experiences as part of their ongoing town transformation. In addition to an impressive assortment of galleries, gardens, parkland, and events, they have recently added the Spanish Art Gallery to their collection. With the highly anticipated opening of the Faith Museum in autumn 2023, visitors will be captivated by the diverse range of exhibitions and attractions on offer. The knowledgeable and friendly staff ensure a fantastic experience for all who visit.
A gem of a town has had a great makeover! Outstanding attractions, lovely hotel (the Park Head Hotel - great accessible room with wet room and I can still taste their delicious dinners!), cheery people everywhere and fabulous food options (the cafe at the town hall, the tapas bar just opposite it and the Bishop’s Kitchen) in town. You won’t go hungry and you won’t feel cheated either! The project is a wonderful example of joined-up thinking working really well. The project really is succeeding in regenerating the town. And there are so many interesting things to see and do! Well done and keep up the good work! Great wheelchair access too! Roy Haworth

This is a worthy day out (or 2 if you really want to take more time to appreciate and read all the info etc in depth) Lots to see that is interesting, thought provoking and tied together with common themes. All in easy reach of each other so no trekking miles.l, as they are literally right next to each other, pretty much. Parking was easy to find and cheap, too. We visited the castle first, then the Faith museum, then the tower, then the mining gallery, then the Spanish gallery before finishing our day with a meal at El Castillo. All the staff in the galleries and Castle etc were knowledgeable and passionate and happy to share information. The displays in all of the places were done better than any other museum/gallery place I've been in, for a long while, really showing off the unique history of Durham. All high quality and visual places. The Spanish gallery is just stunning. Really beautiful. I found myself appreciating the rooms almost as much as the art work. The iris display in the Faith Museum was also really stunning. The Unlimted Pass was definitely good value for money and easyto purchase and use. The whole project is a real labour of love and it shows through the staff and displays. I really hope it continues to grow and rejuvenate Bishop Auckland as it is a pretty town (apart from the ugly tower block) but sadly there are some run down empty premises that look as though they were once grand places.

Went to the Faith Museum today. Really well done and so many lovely artifacts telling the story of how religion developed and changed over the centuries.

Very interesting visit. We are not very religous. But it was great and to our surprise the faith gallery was amazing. Parking is nearby there are a few places to visit within the town. We had lunch in the town hall wich was lovely. The spanidh gallery mining gallery, the palace snd the gardens

Went to the deer park for a walk with the dog as on our previous visit a year or two back but this time the walled gardens were open and they are excellent even at this time of year so we'll looked after. Car park close by at £1 for 2 hours or £4 all day.
Geoff C — Google review
Stunning artwork, exceptionally well curated and displayed discoveries with beautiful lighting and displays. The factor which really sets the Auckland Project apart is the staff, both paid and volunteer, are uniformly so excited to be there and share their passion for art and history. We travelled three hours for the visit and it was so good, we've already been again.

Fast food restaurant
The Smokehouse is a charming independent establishment housed in a historic railway lockup, where they specialize in slow-smoked meats prepared in the American BBQ style. Their signature dishes include beef brisket and pulled pork, which are smoked for 14 hours overnight, while ribs, chicken, and sausage are freshly smoked daily for 3-4 hours. The restaurant takes pride in crafting their sausages, burgers, and sauces in-house.
Wish we had a place like this in Darlington. Tasty food good size portions and a fair price. Even the beer was good. If your in the area your missing out if you not dined here yet. Eat in or takeaway. Recommend the pulled pork with the beans and chips.

Honestly some goooooood bbq. Limited non-alcoholic beers but some decent other on draft. Portion size. Good and can't wait to go back. Burnt end brisket, sausages, pulled pork, and wings all yumm. They were already sold out of ribs.

Service is quick and friendly, and the laid-back atmosphere with good music makes it easy to relax and enjoy your meal. Excellent food, great value, and a place you’ll definitely want to visit again

Had been shopping in bishop auckland and googled places to eat. This came up. WOW. What a little gem. Amazing service. Sorry did t get name of lass serving but she couldn't have been more lovely and helpful. Food was equal to bbq I've had in texas, usa. Will definitely be back. This is the brisket and ends with chips and onion rings. Do takeaway and sit in. Shout out for their homemade Chipotle may was amazing with a kick and I'm not even a sauce person!

Was so impressed with this place! Came on a Wednesday and got honey chilli chicken wings with chips and only cost £5! Delicious food, great service, 100% recommend and worth the visit!

Such a great place to visit for meat lovers! We shared a platter and the smoked meats were exceptional! Tried all the sauces too which go great with everything. Only a few tables inside so make sure you book but it adds to the friendly atmosphere!

What a amazing secret spot. Warm welcome. An exceptional selection of low slow smoked meats and the sides were amazing. They have local craft beers and a great selection of gins. Blown away... Great work guys.

Steak house
Fine dining restaurant
Manzo Bishop Auckland is a popular family-owned restaurant known for its delicious food and excellent service. The menu offers a variety of options, including Prawns Pil Pil and filet steak cooked to perfection. The sauces and sides are outstanding, making for a delightful dining experience. Visitors with young children appreciate the attentive staff who go out of their way to ensure everyone enjoys their meal. Additionally, the establishment's friendly staff and inviting atmosphere make it a must-visit spot in the area.
As per usual. This place was fantastic. Our Host was great. Our server was great. Best of all, had a chat with our Chef, who had clearly had a busy day. His words “steak was great, because the Chef loves Steak” Fact, this is why the tip was so high. You guys put the NE on the map. Mr Singh

Food was great, staff were lovely and a really nice friendly atmosphere. We had a meal on a Friday evening and it was busy but staff worked really hard to make sure everyone was looked after - you wouldn't get that level of commitment to customer service in a chain restaurant. This is a family run restaurant and it shows in all the right ways :-)

What a fantastic find this was! Superb service from the moment we walked through the door and the food was fabulous, topped off with great wine and cocktails. Atmosphere was fantastic, couldnt have wished for a better evening. Thoroughly recommend and we will be returning.

Friendly welcome. Good service Vegetable soup tasted of nothing but too much pepper Had chicken for Sunday lunch ( no beef option,) Yorkshire pudding small and all stodge as if oven not hot enough. Gravy had a strange taste .. Everything else was OK . All party had similar opinions Think it was £6 starter £16 main

After a 55min wait for food from ordering the food was in edible. Simple order of Ribeye steak and chips, that we were unable to eat as absolutely covered in salt. Definitely will not be back

Dined at Manzos last night, opted for Prawns Pil Pil which was delicious especially the bread, garlic mushrooms which were nice. We both went for filet steak for main, one rare and one medium rare, both cooked to perfection in my opinion. We went for Peppercorn and creamy garlic sauce to accompany them and the fat chips. Both of the sauces were outstanding and the chips light and crispy. Overall a very good experience at Manzos, and if the lady who I assume is the manger / owner is reading this we made it to Kynren on time but thank you for offering us a lift down, fantastic customer service 😁. Would definitely visit again.

Bang average. Ceaser salad starter was little gem not romaine and shop bought croutons, no parmesean in sight, mushrooms on toast flavourless but ok. Steak ok, sauces packet bought and very thin and tasteless. Tirimiau made in house but lacking. Who soaked the sponge? No one haha. Cheese cake bought in rubbish. Ok but probably won't return. Restaurant lacks soul and a capable, caring chef.

Absolutely amazing food, the steak seasoning was absolutely incredible. service was beyond and the most incredible cocktails thanks to Brogan. Can't wait to come back again

If you're looking for a delightful dining experience, Gabrielle's is a hidden gem that should not be missed. Nestled in a charming little town, this restaurant has been serving up delicious meals for over 40 years. During our visit in May, my partner and I were treated to exceptional service from an attentive waiter who made us feel right at home. The menu features an impressive selection of gluten-free options alongside mouthwatering dishes like seafood pasta and pizza.
Knowing this place has been there over 40 years, it is still an amazing find. 4 of us went, and we all agreed it was so good and authentic. Between us we had the special sausage tortellini baked with mozzarella cheese on top 😋, wild pesto tortellini, and the special salmon ravioli. Raved! The guys did wish there was more of a beer (not lager) choice but that would be the only negative. Nice touch was the 15%voucher to the wine/cocktail bar across the street for after the meal.

Had a meal here tonight with family. What a little gem. The food was fantastic. The service was top notch. Very attentive and helpful staff but not overbearing. The gentleman who served us most of the night, who's name I didn't get, was spot on. Always smiling, sir and madam, courteous, pleasant, just superb and let us put on a choice of music as we were the last one's there. Definitely recommend and we will go back. Thank you all at Gabrielle's.

My Husband Terry and I came across Gabrielle's quite by chance as it's tucked away at the top of a side street. We were here for my birthday night out! We had no reservation, but received a warm welcome and were shown to our table. The drinks menu was very good, with both cocktails and wine. We chose our starters and main courses from the extensive menu, which catered for all tastes. All dishes are pictured. The food was delicious, well presented and we found room for dessert too. The staff, Glen and Katy and the owner, Gabrielle were delightful and looked after us very well. Highly recommended and we can't wait to return.

Cafe
Morrisons Cafe is a delightful spot that offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere, perfect for anyone looking to enjoy a meal. Visitors have praised the cafe for its delicious breakfast options and great selection of hot drinks at reasonable prices. While there may be occasional staffing challenges during busy times, the friendly staff are always eager to assist, ensuring everyone feels supported. Many guests appreciate the attentive service provided by team members like Dan, who goes above and beyond to enhance their dining experience.
Lovely food that was very reasonably priced. The service was fantastic - very friendly and helpful staff!
Jake M — Google review
Waited approx 45 mins in a very busy cafe & ended up coming away with a refund. Self service machines not processing orders to kitchen, waited almost 10 mins for clean cups, no spoons available according to staff. The team in there today were absolutely ran ragged & completely disorganised , nobody seemed to be in charge & organising the team, the service was way below standard & staff didn’t know which issue to deal with first, one staff member in particular was completely frazzled. Management desperately need to step in immediately & take control & responsibility. Today’s experience was dire.
Ally B — Google review
Break fast arrived fast but only the beans were warm, the rest was cold, luke warm coffee from the coffee machine. I asked for sauce when the young lady brought my breakfast, she said I had to cue up at the till, there were a few waiting. Its funny she had 'happy to help' on the back of her vest. WHY NOT put sauce into the computer menu system, why not heat the plates and turn the coffee machine to hot water?
Phil R — Google review
Staffing was bit of issue. Lady was lively on till but not very tech savvy. She would been better on another task with it being busy queue for customers. There was queue forming and she struggled. Wasn't her fault but if her supervisor had assigned her with a more suitable task. Fine let her on till at quieter times build her confidence up but at peak times a more competent colleague needs take control. When food came breakfast was absolutely lush. We would come back again
Christopher M — Google review
Great serving times, although depending on the order the food can still be a little cold. Great selection of hot drinks and really good prices.
Tomm J — Google review
Very poor experience We queued up to wait for the electronic order boards. Takes ages to find things. Quite a lot of items missing from menu. Paid and went to collect our drinks. All the coffee machines were broken and there was a kettle and a jar of Morrisons own brand instant coffee there. I asked where the Americanos were and the woman pointed to the instant coffee. Not only did I not expect to have to make my own coffee but didn't expect to pay £2 for 2p worth of awful coffee. I asked why they didnt just remove it from the menu - the woman really wasn't very helpful and eventually just refunded. My partner ordered a glass of milk - again no milk and was pointed to those tiny pots of long life milk. It would have taken about 150 of them to fill a glass. This turned out to be an error though and a member of staff explained to the lady that milk is kept in the fridge. She then poured some into a cardboard takeaway cup and gave it to us The food came almost instantly, not sure if it had just been microwaved or not. My fish and chips was ok. Not a lot of taste, tons of tiny bones and not very fresh tasting. Batter was nice though. Mushy peas were disgusting, no salt or flavour. My partner had sausage and mash. Tinned peas, dried out sausage and she said the mash was not nice at all Other members of staff were friendly and helpful, but it was just a miserable experience and I won't be going back.

Awful, couldn't do their job properly, food was stale with not a single bit of flavour and i would not recommend coming here. Good job morisons🙄

Hi I loved the cafe today, both my mum and I are disabled and the staff certainly supported our visit. They were so helpful to us, in fact they certainly did more for us, which made it a wonderful experience for us. I definitely recommend this cafe for anyone who is in the area. I would also like to recommend the customer service staff, again the member of staff was lovely and ensuring that we had two scooter shoppers to enable us to do our shopping. Well done Morrisons x

Pub
Bar
"The Mitre" in Bishop Auckland is a real gem with a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. The staff are incredibly friendly and make you feel immediately welcome. The pub offers reasonable drink prices and a diverse group of customers, making for an enjoyable experience. It's conveniently located near amenities like ATMs, making it a great choice for a fun time out. Whether you're looking to watch sports or enjoy karaoke, this pub provides an excellent experience akin to popular chain pubs but with its own unique charm.
Practically empty when we came at 8.30pm but appeared to have a lot to offer. Drink prices very reasonable.

Wow. Where do I start? "Hogan's", as it will always be known to me, is a real gem of a find. And in Bishop Auckland, no less. It doesn't get much better than this. Amazeballs. And prices of drinks are very reasonable. Staff are incredibly friendly. We stumbled across this pub about 18 months ago. They were doing karaoke on a Wednesday afternoon! I spoke to an elderly gentleman in the welcoming communal urinal and said I was surprised they had karaoke on a Wednesday afternoon! He said yeh, it's meant to be on a Thursday afternoon! Who else would cater for punters wanting a karaoke on an afternoon, I ask you?! Wonderful. And I gave one of my best performances of Coldplay's Viva La Vida. That's because of the crowd that had gathered. Indeed, I think much of Bishop made their way to "Hogan's". Everybody was having a smashing time, helping me to reach those high notes that Chris Martin loves ever so much. Although no recording contract has yet materialized, we all need to keep on practising, so I'll be back in the full knowledge that everybody there will welcome me in open arms, supporting me and keeping me lubricated at a very reasonable price.
Steven F — Google review
Made to feel welcome, immediately. STAFF are very friendly and courteous. Cannot fault in any way. Thank you for your superior staff. Quick to get to you when needing any help. Unlike near bars that leaves you waiting half hour for service 🤣. Once again thank you.
Stephen L — Google review
This place is amazing. Centre of Bishop, if not the North East. Near Morrisons cafe and the petrol station. And ATMs for cash. All means you are guaranteed a bonanza time at Hogans. And it's just across the road. I love the customers; such a broad group of folk, full of stories. Fruit machines pay but i really go to watch my bro Steven sing Viva la Vida. Is he there now? I thought he was promised a recording contract?
