Rabat in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Rabat, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Rabat offers a quieter, more local counterpoint to neighboring Mdina, with narrow streets, traditional townhouses and a lived-in Maltese atmosphere. The town is known for its early Christian and Roman heritage, including St. Paul’s and St. Agatha’s catacombs and the Domus Romana with its ancient mosaics. Visitors can explore historic churches, small museums and cafés, then easily walk to Mdina’s fortified city or out into the surrounding countryside.
With favorites like Il-Bitha, Mdina Gate, and Victoria Lines, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Peristyle Restaurant and Il-Bitha so you can get the best taste of Rabat while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Mdina Gate is an elegant 1700s gate that leads to a citadel featuring medieval and baroque architecture. Located in Mdina, Malta, this historic site was once the stronghold of the island's medieval, Arab-influenced nobility. The city, which means 'city' in Arabic, boasts a 3000-year history and sits atop a hill with commanding views across the island.
It's an absolutely gorgeous place, one of the best I've ever visited. When we arrived, there were very few people there, and the architecture was simply magnificent. It was a pleasure to walk through the quiet, car-free streets. Time seemed to stand still here, making me want to keep walking and absorbing everything. I highly recommend it.

Mdina Gate and the entire old town were absolutely stunning to visit. Walking through the gate felt like stepping back in time, every corner has such beautiful detail and atmosphere. As a photographer and videographer, it was an amazing place to capture, especially around the cathedral where the light and architecture were perfect. What made it even more special was seeing a group of people come out to sing outside the cathedral, it added such a powerful, emotional moment to the visit. Definitely one of my favourite spots in Malta for both photos and videos. A must-see for anyone visiting the island.

Mdina is absolutely stunning — a place that feels almost magical the moment you walk through its gates. The “Silent City” truly lives up to its name, with peaceful, narrow alleys and golden stone buildings that seem frozen in time. The architecture is breathtaking, from grand palaces to tiny hidden courtyards, and every corner feels full of history and character. Walking through Mdina is like stepping into another era. The quiet streets, soft light, and incredible views over the island create an atmosphere that’s hard to describe — calm, romantic, and completely unique. Whether you’re exploring during the day or coming in the evening when it’s quieter and beautifully lit, the experience is unforgettable. It’s also very easy to reach — you can take an Uber or drive yourself, and parking nearby isn’t difficult. Once inside, everything is walkable and compact, making it perfect for wandering at your own pace. Overall, Mdina is a definite must-visit in Malta. It’s one of the most beautiful and memorable places on the island, offering a mix of history, beauty, and tranquility that you’ll never forget. Easily a 10 out of 10 experience — truly world-class.
MIGUEL B — Google review
Mdina, also called The Silent City, completely captured my heart. It honestly feels like time stopped here hundreds of years ago — walking through the quiet, narrow streets is like stepping into another era. The atmosphere is peaceful and full of charm, and there are plenty of lovely little restaurants for every taste. The only two small downsides were that we couldn’t find any public toilets inside the city (we eventually found some in the park just outside), and parking was a bit of a nightmare — though that seems to be the case in many places on the island. Still, Mdina is absolutely magical and definitely worth a visit.
Jimmy S — Google review
Mdina is a charming historic town with beautiful narrow streets, lots of souvenir shops, and impressive churches. From certain spots, you can also enjoy a stunning view over the city and surrounding areas. It’s a peaceful place to walk around and soak in the medieval atmosphere.

Mdina is full of life and energy! The streets are bustling with activity, and there’s always something happening. Amazing architecture and vibrant atmosphere make it a really exciting place to explore.

This is definitely a must see whole on Malta. We used Bolt to get there and back, using buses is a nightmare due to the numbers visiting. It is a beautiful walled city filled with winding streets, beautiful buildings, lovely discreet shops and cafes. Totally unspoilt. We visited the cathedral and the museum. Once again blown away by the beauty of the cathedral. The paintings, architecture and religious artefacts are breathtaking. A peaceful place to sit and contemplate. The museum has a wonderful collection of artefacts. We spent a long time looking at everything. You need a full day here to really see and appreciate it.

One of my favorite places to visit in Malta! A golden orange walled/ fortified city. Walk across the stone arched bridge into a maze from the past. Greeks Gate, once the entrance gate for slaves has ceiling paintings of the Blessed Virgin Mary her mother Anne and the child Jesus. Mdina was once the capital of Malta that connects to its sister city Rabat. Very walkable and enjoyable!

Is-Serkin - Crystal Palace Bar is a must-visit spot in Mdina, Malta. After exploring the area, consider indulging in some of the best Maltese pastizzi at this charming bar located just opposite Mdina's entrance. You can also grab an ice-cream from one of the nearby vendors and take a leisurely stroll through the lush green gardens surrounding Mdina's fortress walls.
I have tried a lot of pastizzi in Malta, bud hands down this is far the best. I had the one with the peas and one with cheese. The peas were used some special, Middle Eastern spices, filled with a fresh, crispy pastry. Unbelievably delicious and cheap, the queue goes quickly, so it's worth the wait!
Viktor L — Google review
Hole in a wall classic Maltese pastizzi (like filo pastry) with ricotta etc. fresh off the oven piping hot. It’s perfect for quick snack in between culture trip in Mdina and Rabat. Highly recommend. Often super busy so sitting could be an issue for those that want to get seated.
Val A — Google review
The best pastizzi of Malta. We could feel the tradition inside this store. Very good prices, because you won't find a good coffee for just 60 cents in anywhere nearby there. I recommend eating outside and see the plaza in front of Is-Serkin.
Luiz M — Google review
This place is great! Traditional, no-frills pastizzi and coffee bar, and a good place to sit outside and watch the world go by. The pastizzi were the best I've tried in Malta and served straight out of the oven (I'm still dreaming about that pea pastizzi but the ricotta one was also great) and the coffee was served with condensed milk I think. Such a comforting combination of flavours! One coffee and two pastizzi came to €1.70 - amazing value for money. Staff were all polite and friendly too. Thank you!
Lisa M — Google review
Delicicious pastizzi from an unassuming cafe. Queue got long at 12 so get in early! They are served straight from the oven, so super fresh. Tried the cheese and peas options and they were both really good. The pastry was crunchy and flaky and the filling was flavourful. Best of all, they were only 50-60 cent!
Rhys T — Google review
Just wow! We was just coming out of Medina and we were walking across towards Rabat and we saw a bunch of school kids eating some sort of pastry and then we saw the companies name of the bag and it was queues out the door so we definitely thought this is the place to eat for light snack. Hands down, it is one of the most delicious, flaky crispy pastizzi I didn’t even know what it was called but the atmosphere that was filled inside the room bought me back to 1996 just a nice exaggeration but that’s the vibe I felt the oven was authentic. It’s old it’s just such a vibe when you see old people sitting down eating enjoying a coffee. Look in my photos I can’t believe you can buy anything for €0.60 we brought two pasitizzi and one ricotta pie a toasty ham and cheese and a milky coffee for just under €5. We’re definitely recommend if you’re wanting something like to snack on but with a punch of flavour. Highly recommend.

Great local pastries, cheap and delicious. All this what you can see on the picture was about 5 euros. Everything is really fresh and warm. Highly recommended!

Located in Rabat, Malta, Domvs Romana is an open-air site featuring the remains of a 1st-century BCE Roman townhouse. The discovery of this ancient house led to the establishment of the Domus Romana Museum, which now safeguards the excavated ruins and displays a remarkable collection of Roman artifacts found in Rabat and neighboring Mdina. Visitors can marvel at well-preserved mosaic floors that showcase the craftsmanship employed in constructing homes for affluent Romans.
Being one of the only fully remaining roman villas on the island of Malta makes this sight worthwhile visiting! I hesitantly decided to buy a ticket and spend some of the little time I had in the area and was not disappointed. It’s filled with interesting and important history - a bonus that the amount of information is just enough. A good collection of different artifacts, collectibles and more. Definitely worth a visit and knowing more of this part of Malta almost makes you appreciate the island and country even more.
Anders W — Google review
Domvs Romana is a small but very interesting place to visit. The mosaics are beautiful and well preserved, and there are many artifacts to see. It’s easy to walk around and doesn’t take long, but it shows a lot about Malta’s Roman history.

It's a very nice and cosy museum- new and neat but for a really short visit. It's nice to know that Malta has some Roman heritage as well and it's so well-preserved. The sculptures are nice and the tiled floor looks amazing but that's it. Don't forget to go outside to admire the stones. Payment by card only.

Honestly stunning I would defo say get the Rabat tickets that combines it with the national history museum and the catacombs as it makes for a great day out.
Lexi — Google review
We both thoroughly enjoyed visiting this museum. The artifacts are set out in a logical and interesting manner, and the information boards are in English as well as Maltese. It was not busy when we were there, so we could could see all the mosaic floors and statues to their best advantage. There is a lift for people with limited mobility. There is access to an external viewing platform that overlooks some of the unexplored Roman site. The staff were very friendly, helpful and informative.
Pauline B — Google review
Visited this because my inner nerd, having studied Latin during school, wanted to experience what a Roman house might have been like. The mosaic floor is truly mind blowing, including the haphazard repairs they did back then as a stark contrast of skill and appearance!

St. Paul's Cathedral, located in Mdina, Malta, is a historic church dating back to 1696-1705. The cathedral features Baroque frescoes, engravings, and other artworks that survived a violent earthquake in 1693 which destroyed the earlier Norman church on the site. The interior boasts intricate 17th-century apse mural 'The Shipwreck of St. Paul' by Mattia Preti and 900-year-old Irish bogwood sacristy doors.
St. Paul's Cathedral in Mdina is truly impressive – majestic and full of historical charm. The entrance fee is €4.50 and includes both access to the cathedral itself and the museum with interesting exhibits. A highlight of the visit was the ringing of the bells, which added a unique atmosphere to the experience. It’s definitely a place worth visiting!

I came on a Saturday morning, many people were there but it wasn't packed. I got the ticket the includes the museum next to it. You buy the ticket In the museum anyway. Usually the ticket is 15 Euro, but on that day is it was only 3, because it went to charity, which was very nice to hear and be part of. The cathedral itself is beautiful, so many things to see, so you can take your time. The chairs that you see is because I came on a wedding day, cool thing to experience I guess. Overall a must see in my opinion in Madina.

The most beautifull and impressive site in all of Malta. If you only pick one place to visit, pick this one. But your tickets online so you can skip the line. Price of 15 euro sounds hefty but is well worth the money. Even had 2 paintings from Italian master Caravaggio inside.

I really enjoyed the interior decorations. The floor is especially beautiful and they have cleverly used perspex chairs so you can get a complete sense of the floor without interruption from the furniture.

(1696–1702) – A masterpiece of Maltese Baroque architecture. He also did Church of St. Lawrence, Birgu (Vittoriosa) – Rebuilt after the 1683 earthquake. And also The Cathedral of the Assumption, Gozo (1697–1711) – Another significant religious structure. Last, Various parish churches and palaces across Malta. Gafa's architectural style is characterized by dynamic facades, grand domes, and intricate detailing, blending Baroque influences with local Maltese traditions.

Amazing church to see. I am always amazed at the churches and the sheer beauty of the structures and interiors. Also museum is part of ticket as well which is interesting.

I have visited hundreds of different religious buildings all over the world and this has to be one of the nicest I have ever been to. The exterior of the St. Paul cathedral is pretty, but somewhat anonymous, however it os built in beautiful sandstone giving it a golden look during sunrise and sunset. The interior on the other hand is astonishingly beautiful and dressed in lots of various colors giving it a unique and colorful and artistic impression different from many other catholic churches and cathedrals.
Anders W — Google review
The baroque style building designed by Lorenzo Cafa’ commands an overwhelming beauty - both inside and out. It stands in the center of Mdina, with the museum straight across from it. It was crowded when we went, so took a bit of time to get in and also to get photos and video. The floors are stunning - I had no idea that beneath the floor of the Mdina cathedral are three large crypts, numerous tombs and various commemorative slabs without a tomb. The designs of the stones are fantastic, I wanted to stay and look at every one of them. It was decorated for the holidays, everything very ornate. I am gladwe didn't miss it!

The Basilica Kolleġġjata u Proto-Parroċċa ta' San Pawl is a 17th-century Catholic church constructed above a grotto where Saint Paul reportedly resided for three months. The building is visually stunning and offers more than expected from its exterior, with an entrance fee of 5. Inside, the museum showcases St. Paul's journey through Malta, while the underground catacombs and WWII shelters are worth exploring.
Even though the church was closed, the rest of the complex made the visit remarkable! The variety of things to see (grotto, catacombs, bunkers and museum) made this experience really unique and intriguing. A lot of religious art in the museum, worth to spend some time to enjoy it!

Beautiful and historic church located in Rabat, known for its stunning architecture. Mass is still held here frequently. The annual feast dedicated to St Paul is wonderfully celebrated, with decorations, music, fireworks and more. Don’t miss visiting St Paul’s Grotto, located just below the church, it’s said to be where St Paul stayed after being shipwrecked on Malta. Victoria Lines, also known as the Great Wall of Malta, is a 19th-century British fortification wall that stretches across the island. It serves as a popular walking route and offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The trail runs from Madliena through Mosta to Bingemma and Rabat, making it an ideal choice for hikers. The path is not too steep and features some cemented sections, with picnic areas available along the way.
I really enjoyed walking from Naxxar to this place. Part of the path is at the edge of the cliffs by the ditches. It gives you the best views over Malta.

Visited the Victoria Lines recently, and it was an incredible experience! The views are absolutely stunning, and it's a great place to escape the busy tourist spots. The walk along the fortifications was great, and there were interesting historical markers along the way. Definitely a peaceful and scenic spot to explore Malta’s history and natural beauty. Highly recommend it!

Absolutely amazing hike - do bring proper hiking shoes as the descent is a bit challenging, but it's well worth it! I wouldn't recommend it in damp weather as it might be dangerously slippery, otherwise go see it especially around golden hour for stunning views over the islands. You'll need transport to get here, ideally a hired car or bikes.

Good hiking path. Not too steep and manageable, some parts are cemented. Picnic areas are available. No restrooms available. No tickets required. There's free road parking along the entrance by the small church.

Beautiful place in the nature. The catacombs in the mountains walls are impressive. One has the feeling to be in another dimension. It is better to have a good pair of shoes to walk through the path to the wall and through the wall since there are stones everywhere. This place is quite isolated.

I always get the traditional rabbit at nearly every restaurant I visit and the is by far the best rabbit on the island. My partner had salmon and also really enjoyed it. Large portions and very reasonably priced. The area is beautiful and very maltese.

Nice atmosphere and friendly staff. Really good hot chocolate and freshly baked bread. The side salad was very fresh as well. The Angus burger was okay but I would prefer it if it had cheese slice on it instead of just the bun and the meat only. The chips were really delicious. I would still recommend this place overall.

Pros: Great interior and entourage, beautiful decorations, nice customer service - even thought there was a mistake on our receipt. Cons: Food. I found plastic in my fish soup and it looked and tasted like leftovers from other dishes. Spaghetti bolognese tasted awfully, terribly bland. Swordfish was dry. Pizza and octopus was ok.

Il-Bitha ta' Doni is a cafe that specializes in Maltese food and wine. The cafe has a young and energetic team, good food, and reasonable prices. The focaccia bread was not cooked all the way through in the middle but otherwise, the food was very tasty.
Love the place . We went on a weekday in the evening. Service was nice and delicious food . Love the setting too. We were not very hungry so we decided to share few starters between us .. which was enough . :)

At first sight the place looks nice. Wine was fine same as appetizers (fired calamaries and some mix from the chef). Unfortunately, fried rabbit is a joke. It came semi cold, tasteless and extremely dry... Additionally, they did not have many of the wines from the card (not mentioned before by the waitress). I also tried the octopus. Not the worst but quite tough locating it below average u can find in Malta. Not worth the price. Honestly, even not worth a thought... Better avoid this place.

We chose this restaurant purely due to the fact it was the first one we passed walking into Rabat. Overall it was a good experience, the food was delicious and reasonably priced. The service was a little sluggish though and the food came out a little disjointed. Overall it was a pleasant experience and the restaraunt is worth a try if in Rabbat.

We had dinner on a Sunday August 2025 around 8:30pm. Atmosphere was good, it was loud but not noisy or crowded. We didn't have to wait for any table, as we were seated as we walked in. I ordered a Traditional fried Rabbit and partner ordered the Grilled Octopus but as a main. The fried rabbit was unfortunately bland, though cooked well but not satisfying. I had to season it with salt, makes me wonder why this was a Traditional rabbit dish (of Malta?) though tasteless. The octopus however, tasted amazing. With drinks, I ordered a melon cocktail, while partner ordered a mango spicy margarita. The price was the dishes as euro is expensive but reasonable in GBP. Though I would say the price fits the restaurant, based on the setting and decor of the restaurant. The staffs were nice, no issues, they served well. Though I don't know if they even serve tap water here, as it seems you need to order cocktails or wine. Before your meal, you are served a appetitzer bread+condiments, which is nice. And the main meals are served with either chips or garlic and onions potatoes. Bother actually tasted good. I just wonder how many grilled octopus are served as a starter, because as a main, you get 3 in quality. The place looks really nice at night time and it is a restaurant that is on par with UK styles of restaurants. I don't have any complaints for the restaurant. I would rate this a 4 Star Type restaurant. I would recommend this restaurant, but avoid the rabbit dish.

This had to be one of the best restaurants we visited during our time on Malta! The food was incredible, the location was great, the roof was down so it felt like you were “outside” enjoying the warm evening weather of Malta. And finally, the service was 11/10! Our waiter was so attentive, and welcoming which was a big part in why we enjoyed our time here so much. Thank you! ✨

We wanted to try some local wine, but we were told that it wasn’t served by the glass. We don’t drink much, but we had to order a whole bottle. Three of the wines we wanted to try were unavailable. We ordered the food at the same time as the wine because we already knew we wanted to try the octopus. In the end, the wine and the dishes were brought to us at the same time, even though the wine should have been served first, followed by the food. We started eating about eight minutes after the dishes were served, but the food was already cold. The octopus itself was cooked well, but it was a bit too salty, and the breading on the eggplant it was served on was overly sweet. The potatoes that came with the octopus were also not tasty. The bread served was plain, but it was fresh. When one of us finished the wine in their glass, no one came to refill it — we had to do it ourselves. I also didn’t finish my octopus dish and wanted to take it away. They brought me a cardboard box, and I had to pack it myself — something I’ve never had to do before, as it’s usually done in the kitchen. We also mentioned from the start that we wouldn’t finish the wine and would like to take it with us. After we had paid and were getting ready to leave, no one brought us the cork, so we had to ask for it again. The atmosphere in the restaurant itself was pleasant — soft music was playing, and the owner and waiters were kind and friendly — but unfortunately, that didn’t make up for all the shortcomings. For such a high price for food and wine, one would expect better quality food and service.

Despite making a reservation, we had to wait 25 minutes for a table to be available, and when a table cleared up, we were told to sit at a table crammed between the toilets and the bar. Service was polite yet unattentive. The meat was overcooked and bland. It is not as budget-friendly either. The atmosphere (vibe and interior) is the only redeeming factor of this place. If you want to try authentic Maltese cuisine from Maltese locals, this is not your restaurant.

The atmosphere here is great, and the service is excellent. I found the menu easy to understand, but the dishes were a little heavy on the sauces for me.

Delicious food with fast and friendly service. A great spot I’ll definitely return to!

Nice place to make a stop and enjoy some Italian food. It was full but the service and the food was nice.

I would not recommend coming here without a reservation they will put you in the less good looking part of the restaurant and you will have to wait hours to get served because they told us they are prioritizing the guests with reservations. I would recommend eating pizza here the pastas were not that good or filling. The staff felt a little unprofessional, even with a reservation they basically ignored us and took them really long to come up to us when we wanted to ask for dessert or the check, or just another drink. Most of the staff doesn’t speak any other language than italian.

The place has a beautiful garden, but I can’t recommend it. The atmosphere is constantly stressful and unprofessional. The woman at the entrance, likely the owner, only speaks Italian and lacks basic customer service skills. There is nonstop shouting from the kitchen and entrance, making it hard to relax. Despite the venue’s potential, it’s badly managed and I won’t be going back.

Decent pizza, lovely garden setting, helpful waiters...but it was shocking to be welcomed with "if you are patient, then you can sit down" by the Italian owner/manager/host😳😳 We did sit down as we were in no hurry and the pizza took 50 minutes to arrive, but some courtesy and hospitalitable greeting go a long way dear lady!

Restaurant
Nestled within the historic fortifications of Mdina, Bacchus Restaurant offers a unique dining experience that beautifully marries history with culinary delight. Housed in two vaulted chambers that once served as gunpowder storage units from the 17th century, this atmospheric venue invites guests to indulge in a diverse array of Mediterranean dishes. From succulent veal medallions to fresh seabass and tender lamb belly, Bacchus caters to various palates while providing an enchanting backdrop steeped in history.
I was invited by a friend to celebrate his promotion, and it turned out to be a wonderful evening! The restaurant is a cozy place, perfect for a special occasion dinner. The food was beautifully presented and reasonably priced. For the main course, I had the beef fillet with chicken liver canapé, which was cooked perfectly as ordered. For dessert, I tried the pear and white chocolate mousse — absolutely delicious and a lovely way to finish the meal. Highly recommend this place for anyone looking to enjoy great food in a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

The Maltese rabbit was delicious, but the other dishes had small portions. The serving time was quite long, but the friendly staff made up for it—they even helped me charge my phone at the bar. Overall, a good experience. Very pleasant environment.

Location is outstanding. Sat in their secret garden, shaded under umbrellas. Service is horrible, staff is confused, untrained. Food was supposed to be great, but utterly disappointing. Waldorf salad on menu has 2 lines of description on ingredients. However, when it came on table, it was the saddest salad (see pic) I have even seen. Was replaced with greek salad (see pic - apple and sweet dressing 😱).The traditional soup was a tad bit sour (too many tomatoes in the veloute?) but passable. If only, they could be consistent with their food/service, this is would indeed be a great place to enjoy.

After exploring the historic city of Mdina, we concluded our visit at Bacchus Restaurant. On the beautiful terrace, in a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere, we enjoyed a delicious lunch served by Durga. Absolutely recommended.

We came here for dinner for the second time in just three days, and everything was absolutely amazing: the food, the place, and above all the staff. Samdu, Dugha, Frank, the owner… truly wonderful people. This spot is a must if you’re visiting Mdina!

We decided to dine in the beautiful Mdina, and I went for the steak tartare and beef fillet, both were outstanding. I honestly don’t understand the bad ratings here, the staff was incredibly attentive and helpful, and the food was absolutely delicious! The atmosphere was lovely, and our dinner couldn’t have been more perfect. Also, a special shout-out to the homemade bread… I’m a big fan! ❤️🙌🏼
