Niksic Municipality in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Niksic Municipality, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Nikšić Municipality, home to Montenegro’s second-largest city, combines urban life with easy access to nature. Visitors can explore landmarks such as the medieval Bedem fortress and the Cathedral of St. Basil of Ostrog, then sample local beer from the town’s long-established brewery. The surrounding region offers lakes like Krupac and Slano for swimming and relaxation, along with nearby mountains and forests suited to hiking and outdoor excursions. Cultural events and cafes around the central squares give the city a lived-in, local atmosphere rather than a heavily touristed feel.
With favorites like Niksic brewery "Trebjesa", Piazza, and Jerry Pub, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Burger FACTORY and Jerry Pub so you can get the best taste of Niksic Municipality while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Parks
Manitovac is a picturesque restaurant located just 1.5 km from the city center, nestled on the banks of river Zeta. It's not just a place for travelers to take a break; it has also transformed into one of Montenegro's most beautiful picnic spots, boasting a sprawling 15,000 square feet cafe park. The restaurant offers a peaceful setting in parkland with petting animals and a children's play area.
Lovely place for a break with kids on a long trip to seaside. We loved the river, outdoor playground and the food was not the best: my breakfast included two peaces of grilled pork meat (why?!) but, other things were fine. Prices are more than fair! No dogs allowed :( without real reason why, I guess they shall reconsider this ban since lot of people are traveling with their dogs. Maybe introduce some rules like “dog on leesh” and “pick up after your dog” if that’s the problem. Also, they should clean the river Zeta at the entrance, it was littered with trash- what a sad thing to see. However, nice place to visit.
M R — Google review
A beautiful huge outdoor area near the river with a playground, it's a great place for families with kids. The service was okay. We are only eating Gluten free and it was hard to explain it and get their attention to it. Eventually, we understood that we can eat Chicken fillet and some other dishes. The place and atmosphere was amazing, the service was okay as well as the food. It is a good choice if you in the area. Note, it is better to get there from the entry near the main road and cross the bridge to cross the small river.
Amit B — Google review
The restaurant is located across the river from the "apartments and rooms", so you need to park and cross over the bridge. There's lots of outdoor seating next to the river, in a beautiful, serene place. There were a few goats roaming around and grazing in the field nearby. The food was amazing, friendly and attentive service, we were sorry to have to go.
Irina S — Google review
Just a 5-minute drive from Nikšić, in the shade and right next to the river, you’ll find Manitovac Restaurant – a beautiful spot for a family outing. There’s a huge meadow perfect for children to play, along with various animals that the little ones will enjoy. They also have a great playroom, so you can relax with a drink while the kids have fun. The food is decent – I would recommend the soup, Karađorđe schnitzel and home made bread. The chicken tortilla is average. Overall, it’s a wonderful place to relax and spend time with your kids.

Wonderful view and atmosphere Food is fine but takes ages and arrived cold.. But still a real beautiful fun place for relaxed visit
E D — Google review
We visited here on a fresh Nikšić evening. Food was amazing, atmosphere and location was also stunning. We were greeted by a charming waiter called Damian, considering we are British, he spoke perfect English and was very talkative with us. Service was quick, and once again, the food was amazing. I went for the “Veal under the bell” with potatoes and it was genuinely stunning. 10/10 would recommend to anyone in the region, authentic Montenegrin food and wonderful location.
Dylan N — Google review
We stopped for a late lunch on our way from Zabljak to Kotor. The grounds of this restaurant is beautiful. We set by the river under shaded trees and there baby goats roaming around. We ordered the traditional Montenegrin of potato and slow cooked veal under the bell and were not disappointed. The food was very tasty and the portions were generous. The service was efficient, friendly and professional. We spent 20 days in Montenegro and this one by far was the most memorable meal we had in this lovely country.
Geva B — Google review
No signage to find it. When we eventually did locate it, we locked our bikes up & walked down to the bridge - to find a big sign saying no dogs allowed! We took our custom elsewhere, their loss😡

I passed and visited a beautiful location with a picturesque view of the town. It would be advisable for local authorities to ensure proper maintenance of this place, as it serves as an office for some locals. The fortress Ramparts Of Onogošt in Niks c is known for its breathtaking scenery and the opportunity to witness the end of the railway. Despite its run-down appearance, it still holds a certain charm.
We drove passed and stop by this place. Nice place can see the town veiw. Better some local office there should look after this place well.

It is in ruins but fun to explore and also free. Went here early in morning and it has magnificent views of the town. Great if you love to explore ruins like i do. Easy to find with google maps

Right now it's closed, both entrances are sealed with a lock. Maybe on the weekends? Still a nice view from the outside. You can park outside at the parking place.

The Bedem fortress is the medieval ramparts of Nikšić's Old Town, dating back to Roman times in the 4th century, later reinforced during Ottoman rule. Its walls and towers offer panoramic city Open year-round and free to visit, it's a lovely spot for strolling, sightseeing, and imagining the past defenses of Onogošt

Bedem

4.1
(73)
Fortress
Located on a hill near Nikšić, Bedem Fortress was constructed by the Turks on the remains of an ancient Roman military fortification known as Onogost. The fortress features six towers positioned at its corners and houses the oldest part, Castel, in its center. Originally built by Ottomans atop the ruins of a Romanic Gothic cathedral, this site is now recognized as a state-protected national historical monument with significant cultural value.
A little loved fortress that seems not to get many visitors, probably why the police rolled up on me in the parking lot asking why I was there (not fun). But, it was actually pretty cool to check out
Mark T — Google review
We visited the castle; it was nice but nothing particularly special. Convenient parking is available right next to the castle.
Pramod M — Google review
Stopped by Bedem while passing through Nikšić. It’s an old fortress with cool views and a bit of a moody vibe. Not much info on-site, and it’s pretty run-down, but that kind of adds to the charm if you’re into abandoned places. Lots of graffiti, some wild plants growing through the cracks, and a few stairways to explore.
Laurence H — Google review
Very cool abandoned fortress to explore. loads of different sections and stairways. it had small bridges going through. obviously graffiti everywhere but what can you expect really? eerie places too but we found that quite cool. not a single person there except us. no entry fee. also be careful of the broken glass as well. couldn’t find one sign of information
Bethannn . — Google review
Bedem Fortress in Nikšić is a historical site originally built as a Roman military base in the 4th century and later fortified by the Goths. It served as the original old town of Nikšić and offers panoramic views of the current town. The fortress is 214 meters long, with distinct architectural features such as a pentagonal three-story tower in the south and an octagonal tower in the north, with an artillery platform on the highest point
Goran — Google review
Entrance is free as well as parking. There were a dozen people including three of us on Wednesday afternoon in July. 360º beautiful view of the city and surroundings. A very peaceful place to come stretch your legs after lunch. Unfortunately the fortress is poorly maintained. You can see that from afar just by looking at torn up flags. Some parts are not accessible because of bushes and unrestored ruins. Take good care of your small kids because they could fall from several parts of the fortress. I still recommend visiting this landmark to anyone coming to Nikšić.
Dusko L — Google review
Great view of the city. No admission fee. There is very little information about the history of the place. Fun to explore if you like climbing. Many parking spots for cars, not many people visiting.
Estelle M — Google review
Free to visit. Looked abandoned even on a weekend, there was not a single soul except for us in this place. Feels not really like a tourist attraction but like an empty building where teens brink beer from time to time.

Freedom Square

City park
Freedom Square in Niš is a stunningly expansive area that captivates visitors with its beautifully paved surfaces and vibrant atmosphere. On sunny days, it's the perfect spot to relax with a coffee at one of the charming street terraces. The square comes alive during events, such as concerts, where crowds gather to enjoy performances like those by the Belgrade Union. Its cleanliness and well-maintained surroundings add to its appeal, making it a delightful destination for both locals and tourists alike.
Freedom Square-locally Trg Slobode-is the main town square in Nikšić and the largest in all of Montenegro Wikipedia +15. Paved with local Nikšić stone, it forms a rectangle approximately 136 x 89 m and serves as a hub where six streets meet. Designed 1883-85 by Josip Slade, commissioned by King Nicholas I, based on principles akin to the Versailles layout but simplified Name changes through history: originally Karađorđev trg, then Maršala Tita after WWII, and finally Trg Slobode from 1992
Goran — Google review
A clean and tidy square. While Niksic stands out with its parks, forests and trees that beautify the city, one wonders why so much concrete was used in this area, which is the center of nightlife. It's still a meeting and socializing point for people.

Brewery
Niksic brewery "Trebjesa" is a must-visit for beer enthusiasts. You can request a guided tour through their website to witness the creation of high-quality beers firsthand. Visitors have praised its delicious and top-notch beer, comparing it to Czech brews. While you can't buy beer on-site or join excursions, the brewery's reputation as one of the best in the Balkans speaks for itself.
Great beer factory. The beer is served all over town (and country really). Nice security dude. The tour of the parking place was legendary :))

(Translated by Google) One of two breweries founded over 100 years ago in the city of Nikšić. Both production plants, built in 1896 and 1911 respectively, were unfortunately destroyed during both world wars. Only the Trebjesa brewery was rebuilt, thanks to which it is still possible to brew good Montenegrin beer here, which is probably the most popular golden drink in the entire Balkans. Unfortunately, there is no company shop or pub at the brewery, where you could drink freshly brewed beer, but products signed with the Nikšićko brand are widely available and there is no problem in trying them. So... cheers! Burger Factory, established in 2016, is a popular burger restaurant and fast-food joint in Niks c. The establishment prides itself on its professionalism and amiable staff. Customers have praised the eatery for its delicious vegan and regular burgers that come with a variety of dressings. Despite being reasonably priced, the quality of the food remains top-notch. Additionally, patrons appreciate that English is spoken at the restaurant.

Located in the heart of Nikosic, Jerry Pub offers a satisfying dining experience for those looking to take a break from the ubiquitous "National Food" around town. With tasty and generously portioned dishes, prompt and friendly service, and a pleasant atmosphere, this restaurant is definitely worth a visit. However, some customers have noted an excessive amount of smoke inside despite a no smoking sign on the wall.
A pleasant ambience and very friendly staff in the bar. Excellent and very tasty food. Recommendation for Jerry burger and Pizza Napolitana. The food was served very quickly.

Came in on a whim and even without electricity when we originally arrived they tried their best to make sure we could order something (typical Montenegrin family meat plate and cevapi). When the electricity came back he told us the fries would also be available. Cevapi were quite good. The bread fresh from the pizza oven was a great take on somun. Finally tried a draft Niksicko pivo. This is a Montenegrin restaurant. Not five star dining but the food for what it we had was better than the average cevapi joint, prices on the meals are fair and the server was quite good! Shopska was delicious!! Perfect amount of cheese and they added seasoning❤️.

All good, we had a late evening family dinner on Sunday, plenty of free space, great interior design ala Buddha bar. They could serve us hot food. Liked the zucchini soup and chicken. Nice sizes! Chocolate cake was great. For a family of 4 costed us just 46 EUR, so pleasant! Order came a little late. Also people smoke inside, not good.
Ismayil J — Google review
People smoke cigarettes everywhere, which is ridiculous in a place where you want to have lunch. Plus "no smoking" signs everywhere and everyone smokes anyway. It's impossible to have a tasty meal when the stench of cigarette smoke is all around you. Also: - food was slightly warm, even cold - waiter does not understand English, and smokes at the bar - no soap, no towels, no hot water in the bathroom
Anna B — Google review
Oh my god! I thought it is impossible these days, they served me handmade fries! They were so testy, as tasty as the sandwiches we ordered. And everything was so cheap! The waiters were also very friendly Recommend!

Best food and prices in town. Great portions, delicious and more than worth the money. The only thing - wait time was a bit long, around 1h, but it was worth it.
Oskars P — Google review
The place is very nice, decorated, we just happened to be in the middle of nowhere and arrived hungry. We ordered a pizza. The waiter didn't really understand English and it took a while, but he was very helpful and kind. We ordered a Margherita pizza with olives. It was very tasty. Definitely recommend, especially on Sundays when everything is closed and there aren't many places open. So in Blikshits, the pizza is highly recommended.

If you want to get absolutely bland, barely warm food - that’s the place for you! Lazy, slow and gaslighting servers are just a cherry on top. Minestrone soup lacked any real flavour, tasted suspiciously like a vegettta-made soup, had a few spoonful of vegetables in total. The so-called bruschetta (made out absolutely different type of bread) had A HAIR backed into a cheese (why was there baked cheese is a question for another day) and the server was adamant, that it’s impossible that’s was a hair or an eyelash from any of the workers and was, in fact, mine (again, the hair was baked into cheese I saw right when he had brought it to the table and haven’t eaten it). And of course it was included in the total bill. To say less we left hungry, minus 40 euro in our wallets and feeling taken advantage of. Bad kitchen, even worse service, overpriced food and overall bad business.

Prices are reasonable, making it an affordable option for visitors. It's particularly recommended for motorbike enthusiasts due to its warm hospitality towards them. In terms of recommendations, it would be beneficial if there was a designated non-smoking area.
This restaurant had the BEST food out of anywhere we ate in Montenegro! Their French fries were golden crisp and had just enough salt. I had an omelet and then the pork stuffed with cheese, topped with ham. The portions were large and delicious! We went twice and the service was impeccable. Our waitress remembered us from our first visit and gave exceptional service. I would highly recommend this place!

Our host recommended this place to eat. Said portions are large, food is good, prices are fair, and they are one of the few places open on a Sunday. He was correct on all accounts. I am a pretty big eater, and I couldn't finish my plate of chicken in mushroom sauce, with fries. The Cordon Bleu was big enough for two people easily. Everything in the pictures, plus two .5l waters, was €18. Prices are exceptionally reasonable, and with a very large selection. Servers were very attentive and friendly. They take credit card (at least visa). My only complaint is the smoke. It's a thing, I've experienced it elsewhere, it's just uncomfortable. Even for my partner who was here and smokes. If you are in the slightest intolerant of smoke, order to go. But even that shouldn't dissuade you. I'm sure to go, it would be just as good. Thanks!
