Berat Castle, also known as Kala, is a historic fortress located in the city of Berat. Dating back to the 4th century BC, it has been continuously inhabited and holds a rich history influenced by Byzantines, Venetians, and Ottomans. The castle neighborhood offers convenient parking options for visitors. It's best to visit during summer when the weather is pleasant to enjoy stunning views of the river and city from its walls.
You definitely should go. You can drive up the hill and even drive into the castle with streets up there where you can park for free. Like a small town. Bars and restaurants- several to choose from with fab views over Gorica and the river.

Berat is, in general, a beautiful place and shouldn’t be missed on any trip through Albania. The highlight, of course, is the wonderful, well-preserved castle. You can spend several hours up there and feast your eyes on everything. There are also good restaurants within the fortress, and it’s easy to reach. You get fantastic views over the surrounding towns and the mountains. For me, Berat Castle was the most impressive place on my trip through Albania, which is why I can recommend it without reservation!
Fliegbert S — Google review
If you're in Berat, make sure to visit Berat Castle—it’s one of the top highlights in the city. The location offers incredible panoramic views over the Osum River, the Gorica Bridge, and the iconic red rooftops of Mangalem. It’s both a historic site and a living neighborhood, with locals still residing within the castle walls. Getting There: You can drive up (recommended if you prefer comfort—there’s parking available), or walk like I did. It’s about a 20-minute uphill walk, but totally doable if you enjoy a scenic climb. The reward at the top is worth every step! What to Expect: The castle is like stepping back in time—stone-paved paths, beautiful Ottoman-era homes, quiet churches, and photo spots at every turn. You’ll also find a few cafés and small places to eat or grab a drink while enjoying the scenery. Food & Drink Tips in Berat: For coffee and casual bites: Coffe Gimi on the Boulevard is a must—modern vibe and great service. Food offered ther likd dnacks, desserts etc For traditional ambiance: Tradita e Beratit stands out more for its stunning architecture and courtyard than the food, but it's still a worthwhile stop. Bonus Tips for Travelers Exploring More of Albania: Going to Saranda? Try Sophra Traditional—delicious Albanian cuisine paired with an unbeatable view of the Ionian Sea. Visiting Gjirokastra? Don’t miss Te Furra—authentic dishes and a homey atmosphere that feels like a warm local hug. ✅ Free Entry ✅ Historical Experience ✅ Scenic Walk or Drive ✅ Family-friendly ✅ Instagram-worthy Views ✅ Dining Spots Nearby Whether you're in Berat for a day or longer, make sure Berat Castle is on your list—it's the heart of the city and a perfect start to understanding its beauty and culture.

My favorite castle in Albania ! really cool town/ fort at the top of the hill . no entry fee/ really nice views / pretty well preserved castle walls/ church/ etc. plenty to explore and nice area to walk around . Access options : from berat it’s a longer walk up (but easy drive) from the street near the roundabout is a shorter walk up but bumpy road at the beginning (wouldn’t recommend driving) , and from the church way is an adventurous trail walk up (saw families with children hiking up this way)
Just G — Google review
Visited the castle on a summer and its scorching hot. Not much shade here and the heat was excessive. It is an interesting historic place and im sure it would be a nice place to explore on a more friendly weather. Saw some churches. There are 2 mosques inside the castle/citadel, both of them are now only ruins. The view from the top is beautiful, you can see the modern city and the old city.
Reyner G — Google review
Very beautiful place with cobblestone streets, tiled roofs and fantastic panoramic views. We bought a standard tour, so we had to rush from one place to another. If your travel plans allow, come outside of a tourist group and spend more time in this great place.
Liubov — Google review
A must see whilst in Berat, you can easily walk up the hill via the main road. There's amenities once you get to the top with plenty of cafes and restaurants. I personally don't recommend driving up as it can get busy so expect having to reverse up a steep hill.
Oskar — Google review
One of the most beautiful castles in the Balkans, it showcases remarkable Byzantine architecture and style. This large, still-inhabited fortress once held over 50 churches, of which around 20 remain active today. It is home to the Onufri Museum, the Church of Saint Triadha, and numerous other historic monuments. The view is absolutely spectacular a full 360 degrees allowing visitors to enjoy the surrounding nature as well as breathtaking vew of Mount Tomorr to the east and Mount Shpirag to the west.

The restaurant is situated in the historic center of Berat, known for its white Ottoman houses and designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. This restaurant is truly exceptional! From the moment you step inside, you're enveloped in a cozy, inviting atmosphere that instantly makes you feel at home. Every dish is a testament to the love and passion poured into it, with flavors that are simply mind-blowing. It's clear that everything is homemade, and you can taste the dedication in every bite. What truly elevates the experience, however, are the people. The family who runs this establishment are the warmest, most welcoming individuals. Their genuine kindness and hospitality make the delicious food taste even better. The lady who runs the restaurant, in particular, is incredibly sweet and makes you feel like an honorary family member from the moment you arrive. This isn't just a meal; it's an unforgettable experience that combines extraordinary food with heartfelt warmth. If you're searching for a place where every dish is crafted with love and every visit feels like a warm hug, this is it.

Absolutely fantastic! Heartwarming food cooked and served by an entire family. Reservation is advised as they only have 5 tables inside and 5 outside. It takes a small hike but is more than worth it. Special thanks to the care taken to my girlfriend whose birthday it was! Prices were cheap; especially for the amount of love that was put into the food!

Temi is a fantastic spot for authentic Albanian cuisine! The food was absolutely delicious and so fresh — every dish felt homemade and full of flavour. The service was excellent too, warm and attentive without ever being intrusive. A wonderful place to experience traditional Albanian food — highly recommended!

Albanian comfort food at it's best. All is made from scratch, even olives. They make the best vegetarian moussaka I have ever tasted - with a unique spice twist. The owners are very warm and welcoming.

Great place! The girl who served us was simply delightful – she was very friendly and explained everything, served us with kindness. The food was very tasty, even though at first it looked like the meatballs were overcooked, in reality they were perfectly prepared and very juicy, plus the French fries here tasted especially good! We wholeheartedly recommend it to everyone! The prices are also very reasonable for such a special place, which added extra charm to our meal! Thank you! ❤️
Kristine M — Google review
We came across this place as we were looking for somewhere to stay, the restaurant is run by a family, you have the mother in the kitchen and the daughters doing the service, they are so kind and so welcoming right from the start. The food is delicious, we had the stuffed peppers (one of our favourites in Albania), the meatballs cooked in a pan, tzatziki and the mountain tea and every single bite got more delicious. They even tried calling around to see if they could find us a place to stay! Really lovely people, great traditional food made with love, and a dog that slept under our table! Would go back a thousand times!! Thankyou!!

Fabulous family-run authentic Albanian food. Mom and Dad cook, daughter serves. Best restaurant inside the walls. We had moussaka, lamb, and chicken dishes (we went twice for dinner). All excellent. Highly recommended.

Old Town Berat

4.8

Historical landmark
Old Town Berat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Albania, is a haven for history enthusiasts and culture lovers. The area's rich history is evident in its alleys and buildings, offering easy access to historical sites, artisan shops, and traditional eateries. Known as 'the town of a thousand windows,' the picturesque houses on the steep hill provide stunning bird's eye views. Nestled between two mountains, this charming town boasts rustic charm with overgrown gardens and well-renovated guest houses.
Old Town Berat is a stunning place steeped in history. Its well-preserved Ottoman architecture, cobbled streets, and traditional white houses make it feel like a step back in time. What’s truly surprising is that people still live here, keeping the spirit of the town alive. The area is filled with charming restaurants, small artisan shops, and local craftspeople offering handmade goods. From the hilltop, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the city and the surrounding mountains. Every corner whispers stories and legends — a must-visit for any traveler in Albania.
Piotr K — Google review
Wonderful area with a maize of little cobbled paths and alleyways between houses that seem to cascade onto each other down the hillside. Ottoman Architecture is present everywhere in this area which is a living breathing entity. I am staying in one of these buildings and notice many of them now serve as guest houses, some also with small restaurants in their back yards. Also a few craft outlets. Great area to walk around but be careful on some of the steep cobbled sections as they can be a bit slippery.

If you are in Tirana is just 1h away. Great place to spend the day or stay 1 night and see the old city at night with all the lights. Is very small but you will find very nice places to grab something. In summer I don't recommend to go at midday because it's very hot and you won't find much shadow
Alvaro R — Google review
Im fall in love with this city, it's small but u don't feel closely, it's have autentic charming. And there are long history of this city. It was conquered by the Ottomans in 1431. In 1450 it was incorporated into the Ottoman Empire and remained so until 1912. In 2008, the historic city centre was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List as an example of well-preserved urban development from the Ottoman Empire. Definitely i recommend for everyone to visit this city. For me it's best ethnic city in Albania!

Exploring Berat's Old Town: A Perfect Day! 🏰🚶‍♀️ Berat's old town is truly a gem. We highly recommend starting your exploration from the Berat Castle (Kalaja e Beratit). After soaking in the castle's history, you can begin the scenic walk down to the old city below. We started our descent in the Mangalem Quarter, which shares the same hillside as the castle. This is the iconic 'city of a thousand windows' you see in photos, and it's absolutely worth getting lost in its charming, narrow streets. We approached it from Boulevard Republika, which offers fantastic photo opportunities even before you fully enter the district. Next, we crossed the New Bridge (Ura e Rilindjes) to the Gorica Quarter. This area has lovely restaurants with beautiful views back across to Mangalem. It's especially magical as the sun begins to set, illuminating Mangalem's windows – a perfect time for more photos! From Gorica, we continued our walk to the historic Old Bridge (Ura e Goricës). This ancient stone bridge provides breathtaking panoramic views of both the Mangalem and Gorica quarters, with the castle walls towering above. After crossing it, we headed back towards our car, completing our loop. Berat is a genuinely stunning place, and we were surprised that it wasn't overly crowded, especially considering its beauty and historical significance. A truly memorable visit! (This walking tour was the perfect way to experience Berat, a city that captured our hearts during our 2025 Albanian road trip. For our full itinerary, you can find my summary review of Skanderbeg Square in Tirana!)

Very unique and beautiful historical city with the history being well preserved. The old city is inside the castle compound. It is protected by UNESCO with give name The City with Thousand Windows, and it claimed as the city with most settlers living in the castle (60k people). There are 2 different city part, Mangalem (the bigger one) and Gorrica (a smaller city opposite the river). Inside Mangalem you'll find 3 churches ruins and 1 mosque ruin which all built using the ancient Albanian building technique, by mixing stones and bricks in the same structure.

Berat Old Town is UNESCO WHL site with architectural heritage of Ottoman style houses. By the Osum River, the site is giving the essence of life during the Ottoman period. The parking is limited. There are few cafes and restaurants around. You can directly reach the site downhill from the Castle.

Restaurant
Nestled in the Mangalem district of Berat, Homemade Food Lili is a charming restaurant located inside Lili's home. The cozy eatery exudes simplicity with its rustic wooden tables and traditional tablecloths. Run by the friendly owner, Lili, and his wife, the restaurant offers an authentic taste of Albanian cuisine with all dishes made from scratch. Despite its small size, it's a popular spot for locals and visitors alike.
Our evening was truly amazing. From start to finish, it felt like a celebration of Albanian culture and hospitality. Lili’s wife prepared the most delicious, authentic dishes, with the stuffed eggplant being an absolute must-try! Lili’s dad also made some incredible homemade wine that perfectly complemented the meal. But what really made the experience special was the warm and heartfelt hospitality of Lili and his son. They are very welcoming and attentive. We also had the chance to share the table with guests from around the world, which made the evening even more memorable. Thank you, Lili and your family, for an unforgettable night! Highly recommend to anyone visiting Albania!
Tiffany L — Google review
Please make a reservation per WhatsApp in advance! We were lucky to share the table with other couples from everywhere and enjoyed our night all together! We ordered eggplant, meatball, cheese pork sausage and home made red wine. Everything was hand made by Lili and his family. They were such great host, remembering every guest name and treated us with Raki in the end. Thank you again for your hosting us (Melody and Sebastian)!
Yan M — Google review
Let me start by saying there’s no wonder this restaurant is booked out for the next year. We managed to secure a table because someone in our party had just been there a few weeks ago and called Lili to see if there was room and he made some for us. This is exactly what you want in Albania. This is their home, and you’re having dinner in their backyard while the family takes care of you. Lili is chaotic and full of life and silly and very loving. He’s running all over the place talking a mile a minute but makes sure to focus on you and appreciate you being there. He’s the heart of it. His son Christi is very kind and helpful, his wife is in the kitchen doing the cooking and dishes, his father makes the wine, and the family dog is running around. There’s only 8 items on the menu, all soooo reasonably priced it’s almost a steal. And it’s very good food and very filling. It’s a tight space, and you have tables and people all pressed together but it feels like a big family all dining together. It is a bit hidden away, up a bunch of stairs and near the only wine window in Albania. We saw people getting turned away and were blessed to not be some of them. This is one of the best experiences I’ve had in Albania and I’ve been living here 7 months. SO much love to Lili and his family, if we’re ever back in Berat we’ll reserve a spot a year out.
Acasia T — Google review
Thank you for the best and most memorable meal in a while! I wish I could give more stars! Everything about this place was amazing. The host’s energy is infectious, and because he’s so excited, everyone else opens up a bit and is that more willing to talk to each other. Needless to say, the food is delicious. Our favorites were the lamb and the stuffed aubergine. I don’t normally even like aubergine! The homemade wine is really good, and I say that as someone who’s tried more than enough homemade wines. The rakija actually tasted really nice, not like the moonshine that I expected and had elsewhere. Make a reservation, and get ready for a fantastic experience!
Halina M — Google review
A must if you go to (or near) Berat! We had a truly amazing evening! It was a wonderful and unique introduction to the traditional Albanian kitchen from start to finish. A warm welcome in a real (courtyard) family restaurant with the great hospitality of Lili and his son, fantastic culinary skills of his wife and delicious wine and raki making of his father. We shared a table with people from all over the world, ordered the lamb, meatball, tomato with rice and ricotta, and enjoyed our night together with a good glass of wine. Animating (“I have a system”), heartfelt (a hug when saying goodbye) and attentive (remembering our names), thank you Lili and your family for the unforgettable experience and greetings from Derk & Joric from the Netherlands!
Derk K — Google review
What you get here is a great atmosphere thanks to Lili - so much energy! We had a great meal with new friends from Netherlands, Germany and USA on our table. It is a lot of steps to get up there but worth it! Booking is essential. We were there on a Tuesday night mid October and people were being turned away at the door. (When you are leaving or approach Lilis head to the wine window nearby as it is not far 🍷)
Justine C — Google review
We heard heard about the legendary hospitality of Albania and Lili showed us exactly what that meant! No even sure where to begin. It truly felt as though Lili has invited us in to his home and genuinely excited to have us there. His joy in having people come to eat his food was radiant and it created an atmosphere like no other restaurant I’ve ever been to. We started the night sitting with strangers and ended with friends, the intimate nature of Lilis places you shoulder to shoulder with the other guests and as you dine. Oh, and I haven’t even mentioned the food…absolutely, unbelievably, out of this world, to die for food! The type of food you can only get with home cooking and we loved every bite. Thank you Lili and enjoy your holiday to Greece!

Absolutely amazing experience at Lili Traditional Food! The best place and food I have ever experienced. The food was authentic, fresh, and full of flavor — truly some of the best we had in Albania. Every dish felt homemade with care, and you could really taste the quality of the ingredients. But what truly makes this place special is the owner, Lili. He’s incredibly warm, welcoming, and passionate about sharing Albanian cuisine and culture. His hospitality made us feel like guests in his home, not just customers. Highly recommended if you're in Berat come hungry and leave happy!

Gorica Bridge over the Osum river is a landmark in the city of Berat, Albania. It is one of the oldest and most popular Ottoman bridges in Albania. It connects two parts of Berat, was originally built from wood in 1780 and was rebuilt with stone in the 1920s. It’s one of the famous places to visit while in Berat. Very crowded bridge with people stopping for photos and view. A great view to Berat castle and the old town.

If you go to the church opposite the bridge, this is the place for the best sunset views with all the houses in the background. We made our photos from the church yard and after they closed it at 8 p.m., we continued the photo session in front of it. They light the lights around the houses at the same time and it gets very beautiful. The bridge is also lighted.

Mbrica Restaurant Traditional Food is a small family kitchen located inside the castle, popular among tourists in Berat. The potato moussaka and homemade baklava are highly recommended. Visitors enjoy the warm hospitality of the owner, who treats guests like family. The restaurant offers a stunning view of the mountains and village from its terrace. Guests savor delicious traditional Albanian food and drinks, including homemade wine and local beer.
My family and I had such a good experience at Mbrica! The restaurant had a really authentic vibe and clean, with beautiful views. When we went (July) it was really hot but the drinks were cold (even if there wasn’t any ice) and they had a fan with mist which made the heat bearable. We ordered the cheese, veal ribs, musaka, and the meatball casserole. Everything was tasty, but for me, the cheese and the meatball casserole were the absolute best. The veal ribs weren’t as tender as I expected, but they were still good and full of flavor. The price was also very reasonable (3800 total for food + drinks). There’s also a clean bathroom downstairs, which is always a plus. But what stood out the most was the owner’s kindness. He was incredibly warm and welcoming to everyone, the service was outstanding. Highly recommend if you’re looking for authentic food, a lovely view, and genuine hospitality.

WOW - end-to-end, outstanding experience! Our host personally assisted us with check-in (yes, you really are inside the castle walls) and made us feel right at home immediately. Our spacious, clean room had a stunning view over Berat. To top it off, we had the beauty of history and the convenience of today (recently renovated shower and bathroom, old castle walls and historic decor). Our dinner was to die for. Sinada (I'm sorry, must be spelling name wrong) was the BEST host ever. We chatted all night over glasses of beautiful Albanian wine and the most delicious food. 10/10 - our favourite spot in Albania, hands down!
Jodi R — Google review
The restaurant overlooks the hills and the Berat town square. The restaurant itself is very pretty with terrace seating. We had the meatballs and lamb dish. Both were delicious, especially the meatballs with some pepper and cheese on top. The lamb was very soft but a bit dry. But overall we really enjoyed our meal. Highly recommended!
Shrestha G — Google review
We visited this restaurant at the recommendation of our tour guide and we were not disappointed. From the minute we entered, it was so welcoming and the views were an added bonus. We didn't choose off the menu, we let them decide and we were treated with local and traditional dishes. This restaurant has been family run for 300 years and you can tell that a lot of love goes into the running of it. Highly recommend a trip to here if you are in Albania.
Gina S — Google review
With so many restaurants in the area, it can be overwhelming to choose from unless you know about this place. Hands down one of the best views in the town with the food besting them. The owners Milto & Vila can help guide you around town along with providing top notch overnight accommodations (with ice cold AC’s). P.S. ask for the “tave Mbrica” (cheese casserole) which is the family recipe and tastes like your Grandparents spent all day making it. Even if you’re lactose intolerant……..DO IT
Danny N — Google review
Mbrica casserole Restaurant is the real deal when it comes to traditional cuisine. Everything was expertly cooked and full of flavor. A warm, charming place to enjoy a proper meal.
Candelaria P — Google review
After a climb upwards and a warm welcome with a beautiful view, we had certain expectations. We chose the veal ribs and berat steak. Unfortunately, both did not live up to those expectations at all. Although the veal ribs were tender, the taste was rather bland. The same applies to the Berat steak. (No salt, pepper, or any herbs for that matter.) You get the choice between potatoes and salad. The salad was literally just a few leaves of salad with dressing, not even a slice of tomatoe. The potatoes apparentky were French fries without any kind of sauce. In all honesty, the service and location are very nice, and maybe we were unlucky with our choices as the plates of other guests looked a lot more appealing. All in all, we were disappointed seeing as the review score is quite high.. :/

The rooms were clean, comfortable, and nicely decorated, offering a great view of the beautiful surroundings. The location is perfect, in the historic center of Berat. Breakfast was delicious. I truly felt at home here and would highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Berat. I will definitely come back!

Absolutely exceptional experience! The hotel was spotless, stylish, and incredibly comfortable. Staff were warm, attentive, and professional throughout our stay. The on-site restaurant was a highlight — every dish was beautifully presented and full of flavor. Whether you're staying overnight or just stopping by for a meal, this place delivers quality and comfort at every level. Highly recommended!

Absolutely beautiful! Located in one of the beautiful ancient parts of the Old Town Berat. It right in the center of where you want to be. The rooms are gorgeous. All wood furniture, antique decor, and beautiful wood carvings and details on the ceiling. Staff is friendly and very helpful. Breakfast is delicious and gives you a beautiful view. You walking distance from the castle and the a couple churches and mosques. Staying here was just an all around wonderful experience. If you have a car, don't park it in public parking! They have parking available for you here!

Betatino is simply stunning! The hotel perfectly captures the city’s charm with its beautiful stone details and authentic vibe. The location couldn’t be better, super convenient and right in the heart of everything. Breakfast is a real treat, especially with that amazing view to start your day. What really makes the stay special is the staff, so warm, friendly, and welcoming. 💗💗You instantly feel at home and never want to leave. ☀️ Highly recommend if you want to experience the true spirit of the city in a cozy, beautiful place!

We recently celebrated our engagement at this restaurant, and it was truly an unforgettable experience. From the moment we arrived, everything was beautifully arranged — the ambiance was warm and elegant, the staff incredibly attentive and kind, and the food… absolutely delicious! The atmosphere created the perfect setting for such a special occasion. We couldn’t have asked for a better place to celebrate this important moment. Highly recommended

Staying at Beratino Hotel was an unforgettable experience. From the moment we arrived, we were captivated by the breathtaking view—truly one of the best we’ve ever seen. The room was spotless, beautifully decorated, and carried a charming sense of another era, like stepping into a time of elegance and authenticity. Every detail had been thoughtfully considered, creating an atmosphere of warmth, comfort, and timeless beauty. It was more than just a stay—it felt like a journey into the heart of Berat’s history and spirit. We left with wonderful memories and a deep appreciation for the care and love that clearly goes into this place. Highly recommended!

Noisy at Night and Overpriced for What It Offers The accommodation is just a few steps from the main street, which is great if you’re carrying luggage — no hills or long stairs. The location is very convenient for walking around the city. The room was spacious and had a fantastic terrace, with towels, toiletries, and a hairdryer provided. The staff was friendly, and you can pay by card (just not with Amex, even though it’s listed as accepted). However, there are some downsides. Being so close to the street means it gets noisy, especially at night due to a nearby pub with loud music. The price feels high for what’s offered. Breakfast was okay, but for the rate, they should really serve fresh orange juice instead of artificial. There’s no on-site parking, but if you’re lucky, you might find a spot down the street near the second bridge. Overall, it’s comfortable and well-located, but be prepared for the noise and a few small disappointments. 80 euros / night

Incredible stay at Hotel Beratino. I stayed one night with my partner in a superior double room with a lake view. We were stunned by the views from the room, the spacious bathroom and balcony, complimentary breakfast and one of the largest beds I have ever slept in. The only minor downside is being close to the main road but the comfort of the room had us fast asleep regardless! If noise is an issue for you I’d suggest some ear plugs but otherwise the staff were great and welcoming making it a 5 star stay.

Restaurant
Antipatrea Traditional Restaurant & Cocktails is a pleasant and comfortable eatery offering delicious cuisine and exceptional service. This charming establishment is ideal for lunch, with their highly recommended mixed plate for two people. Additionally, their village salad is superb, boasting vibrant tomatoes and flavorful cucumbers drenched in high-quality olive oil. While the traditional food mixed plate was enjoyable, it could have been hotter. Nevertheless, the service was prompt and courteous.
Great terrace with views on the mountains surrounding Berat. The food was very good, and reasonably priced. Great for lunch after exploring Berat’s castle district!

I tried for the first time vianez (a sort of cordon bleu, but 1000 times better) and the okra…. These were so good that I had to come back there and order these dishes again. Very friendly staff, good service, amazing food and ofcourse the view from the terrace crowns the experience.
Zena Y — Google review
Nice and cosy restaurant with good food and excellent service. We visited this place for lunch and our water recommended to try the mixed plate for two people. We also ordered the village salad which was excellent. We could really taste the juicy and fresh tomatoes and a full of flavour cucumbers drizzled with good quality olive oil. The traditional food mixed plate was nice, but the food was only warm and not hot. The service was polite, friendly and fast.

The food was delicious! We ordered bamja, eggplant, and dolma. The staff was really kind and helpfull. The place is a little bit small and difficult to reach but it is worth to come. The price is also a little too high for what you get.
Selin — Google review
Name of the restaurant is what you get. A traditional place with extra friendly staff and a generous offer of Albanian dishes. Dishes itself are prepared and served as expected for traditional place. The taste is there, nothing to complain about. If you want to keep it simple and traditional - go after it. Do not expect classy place with great wine selection, though.
Kristian L — Google review
This place was the end of a guided tour! They try, but they have to try to improve even more! The location is where it is and the choice of places to eat is limited! That's probably what makes the business go around! The food came out not so warm, except for the lamb! But on the other hand the lamb was not so good, mostly bone and fat! The white house wine tasted like fox poison! Recommend the bottled beer instead! The rest of the food itself was ok, with the exception of the lamb dish! The staff happy and pleasant and accommodating! The advantage here, however, is that the food is affordable and good prices! I don't want to advise against eating here, but you should choose carefully from the menu and be on the safe side! A piece of advice for this place....you are in a wonderful place! Try to raise the food quality a notch, if nothing else for your own culinary pride!

Had a meal at the restaurant which included a starter of delicious spring rolls and a main course of lamb with potatoes and a little bit of salad. Both dishes were superbly cooked and were served quickly. There is an extensive menu of Albanian dishes accompanied with some pasta dishes as well. Thanks to Emre who was very friendly and professional. Three large Korce beers and the food was 2,150 Lek so excellent value for money.

We ordered soup and main dishes. Pasta Bolognese was served together with the soup. Pasta was warm at best but Bolognese was cold and sparse. Tasted like microwave food and was very dry. My partner had lamb and potatoes as main dish. That tasted dry and reheated as well. In the end, great disappointment.

Very nice restaurant. Feels like at home. We came pretty late, and we still could get tasty traditional dishes. We took tavë kosi, it's tradituonal albanian dish, lamp backed with yogurt. We liked it very much. We also enjoyed Musaka with potatoes and mixed salad. The atmosphere is very pleasant, nice music, very friendly service. The hostess and cook is so warming and sweet that it made us feel at home and very welcomed. We would definitely come back here! Thank you!

We would absolutely recommend Eni Traditional foods. We are big foodies and this is the best Albanian food we have had on our trip. We ordered the Tave Kosi, mixed stuffed peppers and aubgerine and the village salad. We shared the dishes between the two of us. It was absolutely delicious and the portion sizes are very generous. Our personal favourites were the lamb, which was extremely tender and the grilled aubergine We left feeling very happy and satisfied. The atmosphere and restaurant was very fancy but it was all very affordable.

We popped in for lunch and it turned out to be such a gem! The prices were very reasonable, and the view was absolutely incredible. The stuffed eggplant was delicious, and if you’re trying the wine, definitely go for the house white, it’s served in carafes! We’ll definitely be back on our next visit to Berat

Incredible view and decent food! Would recommend it! Unfortunately we had the same song on repeat all the time, like another reviewer mentioned but didn't spoil the experience. Meat balls were slightly salty for my taste. Roast veg was good. Stuffed peppers would be nice with some meat or some more variety. Should really be a starter as opposed to a main.

We really enjoyed our time at Ballkoni Gorices! From the rooftop you have a wonderful view to the old bridge, especially at sunset. The food was very tasty and fresh. Our waiter Toni was very friendly and made us feel welcome. For us, it is a place you should visit when you are in Berat.

The food was really bad, really obviously frozen (for too long) and not even properly defrosted. The kind waiter took some dishes off the bill and apologized and he was nice. The view is good if you focus on the bridge and not on the parking lot full of trash. ✨️🤌 I would say, only go for the drinks!

Hotel & Traditional Food Ansel is a charming hotel located in the heart of Berat, offering clean and well-appointed rooms with modern bathrooms. The hotel's central location provides easy access to the different parts of Berat while maintaining a peaceful atmosphere.
Went to eat here during my free time in Berat as part of a day trip. Th review from the restaurant is beautiful! The restaurant itself is on the fancier side which reflects on the prices, but still not pretentious. The food was absolutely amazing. Waiter was very nice as well. Would recommend !!
Alexandra L — Google review
Lovely designed hotel facing the view of a thousand windows. Large and clean room. Excellent breakfast. High and difficult stairs to climb, no elevator. The place is not suitable for people with disabilities. When we arrived, dozens of bags of construction products were standing on the side of the garden. At 5:30 in the morning, a terrible noise started. They lowered the dozens of bags from the height to the street on a slide, each time a bag shattered noisily onto the street. Unbearable. How audacious to rent rooms, at a high price, and wake the guests with a terrible noise. The hotel is undergoing massive renovations, keep that in mind if you book a room. You will not have peace and sleep! After the hotel staff's response, I still believe that massive renovations are taking place within the hotel, even if not on the exterior walls, and that anyone who books a room, like we did, and endured, will not enjoy peace.

We didn't stay at the hotel but went to the restaurant for dinner. The location is a windowed terrace looking on the river, really beautiful! They propose a variety of traditional meat dishes that are very good, and also salads and various appetaizers. The service is good and fast, the staff is polite.

I visited the Ansel restaurant. There was no posted or visible policy stating that reservations are required. I stood waiting for about 10 minutes, and no staff member approached me or acknowledged my presence. When I finally asked if there was availability, I was immediately told they were full — no effort was made to check or offer alternatives. The entire interaction made me feel invisible and unwelcome. If reservations are truly required, that should be clearly stated on their website or signage. Regardless, no guest should be left standing ignored. Courtesy and respect cost nothing, and I felt neither here.

Assuming that it opened in 2004, it seems to have drawn the line at other newly opened restaurants. That's why they have a good team. The quality is not always very high, but a shawarma/ gyros wrapped tortilla with a ketchup sauce. Service is uneven from different types of the staff, but not bad as overall. Prices are very reasonable, considering the location and the quality of the food. The atmosphere is homely, and the free Wi-Fi is appreciated by many travellers. No credit cards accepted, cash only. # Albania # Shawarma

I had a favourite dish of mine, the cream chicken with mushrooms. Same price (800 lek) as Gjirokaster but much bigger portion. There are several terraces outside the main restaurant, too hot for the daytime, but I think great to sit out there in the evening. Excellent views of the old town from here.

Great little restaurant with Albanian food, and food specific to Berat. I'm vegetarian and I was spoilt for choice with the food choosing spinach and cheese pie and stuffed peppers. Both were incredible! We also had a bottle of the Cobo wine as that is local to the region which was delicious. Finishing off with dessert. Thanks to all the staff who were lovely and welcoming, plus giving us help looking on Google for certain dishes so we knew what to expect! ❤️

Restaurant Ajka in Berat was an unexpected bonus! It was a very hot day in August when we visited, so the shaded balcony, iced coffee drinks and cold water served by the friendly waiter Ledi was just what we needed. Once we had recovered from the heat we had a delicious lunch inside the air conditioned restaurant, again looked after by the ever-attentive Ledi, with a variety of tasty, traditional dishes. We thoroughly enjoyed our meals and the excellent views as well!

By far worst meal in any restaurant I have ever experienced! We got greeted by waiter , I think he’s name was Kledi. He was sitting down when we came in about 5-5:30 on one of the tables. No one else was in the first room as you came into the restaurant. We ordered a bottle of white wine , and he said it’s not cold. Alarm bells should’ve been ringing then! No white whine in the fridge!! We ordered two starters and they were ok. Our waiter keeps disappearing when we needed to order and he was constantly on his phone not interested at all in what was going on in his section, even when 3 other tables arrived he was on his phone. We ordered meat platter for two. It was completely overcooked and we could not eat it. Something that looked like a burger was completely black and burned. We called the waiter( when he was eventually off his phone) and pointed to him burned / black burger and told him that food is untouched and so badly overcooked that we could not eat it! All he said was” Sorry” and walked off. Then went back on his phone. When we got a bill he charged us for everything and burned meat platter for 2 ! Chicken is excellent atmosphere is very nice, and the view is beautiful you can see the old city from the balcony. But what I couldn't get over was the waiter Emilio who was very nice. Not only helpful and friendly but also funny and charming hope he is single.

Hotel
Located in Berat, Albania, Tradita e Beratit - Hotel & Restaurant is a charming and traditional hotel that offers a warm welcome to its guests. Situated just a short walk from Partizani, this hotel provides convenient amenities such as an on-site restaurant, 24-hour helpdesk, free Wi-Fi, and room service. The hotel's traditional style and proximity to historic sites make it an ideal choice for travelers interested in exploring the UNESCO-listed historic center of Berat.
We spent two wonderful days here. The hotel is beautifully located – offering a fantastic view over the old town. The atmosphere is unique, with many terrace-like levels built into the hillside. Very tasteful. The photos are absolutely authentic! The staff is very friendly, welcoming, and attentive; Markel, in particular, stood out as a very thoughtful team member. We would have loved to stay longer than just two days!

We had a reservation (it was very busy so would definitely recommend booking at night). Apart from a bit of a confusion at the beginning about where to go to see the host (it is multiple levels and we came from the road at the top) - once we were sat the service was prompt and kind. We took the set menu for 2 and it was excellent. We also had a bottle of red wine which was the best we had in Albania - rich and strong, extremely good with the meats. Super cool atmosphere. The vibe is insane around sunset!

We saw so many posts about this restaurant — unfortunately, none of the promoters mentioned that their visit was sponsored. The food was below average, and you can find very similar dishes in many nearby restaurants for a lower price. The service wasn’t great either: we asked for a cocktail, and they said, “It’s at the bar upstairs, we don’t feel like going up — you can go later.” Seriously?! Do yourself a favor — check real Google reviews and you’ll find plenty of places where you can actually enjoy both the food and the atmosphere.
Oxana R — Google review
I was going go to a different restaurant that I had researched and had great ratings, I only went here after someone recommended it. I wish I had trusted my gut bc this place was not it. While the location is beautiful and the decor gives it that authentic vibe, you could clearly tell that, because it was a set menu, everything was premade and probably under a warmer. My food came tepid, and felt like it had been sitting out for quite a while before it got to my plate, the salad was plain as well. One of my least favorite meals of my trip.

Tradita e Beratit – Beautiful Architecture, Modest Food If you're in Berat and looking for a place that captures the city's architectural charm, Tradita e Beratit is definitely worth a visit. The traditional Albanian design, warm wood interiors, and atmospheric courtyard make it one of the most visually appealing restaurants in town. It feels more like stepping into a cultural museum than a typical dining spot. However, while the ambiance is top-tier, the food experience doesn’t quite live up to the setting. The menu was limited, with set options that felt overpriced for what was served. The flavors were modest—not bad, but not memorable either. That said, the staff were excellent welcoming and attentive throughout the meal. Getting there involves a short uphill walk, but it’s manageable and adds to the sense of arrival. I didn’t stay in the rooms, so I can’t speak to the accommodation side. If you’re exploring more of Albania and want authentic cuisine, here are a few standout spots: In Saranda, I highly recommend Sophra Traditional Food is one of the best places for traditional Albanian food along the coast. Great views, fresh local ingredients, and well-balanced pricing make it a must-visit if you're searching for traditional food in Saranda. In Gjirokastra, try Te Furra for home-cooked style meals with real local flavor. Mullixhiu and Ceren in Tirana are excellent choices too—creative, refined, and deeply rooted in Albanian culinary traditions. For the ultimate slow-food experience, Mrizi i Zanave in Fishtë is hard to beat. In Summary: Tradita e Beratit is worth visiting for its unique ambiance and traditional architecture. It may not be a culinary standout, but the experience itself adds value to your stay in Berat. ✅ Unforgettable décor and atmosphere ✅ Attentive, friendly service ❌ Food needs improvement for the price point ✅ Still a great cultural stop on your Albania journey

⭐ 1/5 – Extremely Disappointed – Watch Out for Scams We visited Tradita Restaurant in Berat today with a group of friends and had a very unpleasant experience. First of all, the food was below average and definitely not worth the high prices they charge. But what made it even worse was the way they handled the bill – it felt like they were trying to scam us. They initially tried to charge us for three bottles of water when we only received two. They just verbally listed the items while the waiter held a tablet and we told him that we had only two. After removing the extra water, we paid, but something didn’t feel right. I asked again for a printed receipt, and after disappearing for several minutes, the waiter returned and claimed another staff member had "accidentally" added a bottle of wine we never ordered – which would’ve added €15 to our bill! They did give us the money back after we caught the mistake, but there was no apology, no explanation, nothing. Just a very sketchy vibe. Based on our experience and what we've heard from others, this seems to happen regularly. Be very careful if you decide to eat here. Always double-check your bill and demand a printed receipt. It’s sad to see such practices in a place with so much tourism potential.

I had an incredible experience at the restaurant! The food was absolutely magnificent, and we savored every dish on the menu. The cocktails were equally impressive—10/10! The venue offers a stunning view of the old town, making it the perfect spot to enjoy a drink while taking in the scenery. Additionally, the rooms were spotless, spacious, and very comfortable. Overall, the experience was fantastic, thanks in large part to the attentive and friendly staff. I highly recommend this place and would definitely return!

We had dinner here. It’s a beautiful setting in the old town on the terrace. Our waiter was lovely and helpful and the food was fantastic. It was a great value set menu which was a nice way to try different Albanian food. We were also able to have a bottle of our new favourite white wine Pupa. Would recommend but you need a reservation.

Day 3

Off the beaten path
For day 3, if you don’t mind the extra trek, today covers more off the beaten path places like Friendly House. Not quite as popular as Berat Castle, but still highly rated among many travelers. Accounting for getting around and average time spent, today’s activities could take about 8 hours.

Restaurant
Friendly House is a charming cafe with professional and warm staff, offering excellent coffee, tea, and cookies. Visitors recommend trying the spring rolls and enjoying the great view from the terrace. The restaurant provides an amazing dining experience with outstanding traditional Albanian dishes such as musaka, yoghurt casserole, and chicken with mustard sauce. The cozy restaurant has a lovely terrace overlooking Berat's Ottoman houses and offers great value for money.
The owner of the flat we rented in Berat recommended The Friendly House to my wife and I to a and it was one of the highlights of our month long drive across Eastern Europe. The staff was quick to greet us, brought our drinks and took our order and served us all with courtesy and speed. The food…literally fabulous. Everything was very flavorful and local and we still talk about this being one of the best restaurants we ate at during our trip. I would 100% recommend this place to anyone coming thru Berat! Thank you for a wonderful evening and meal!
Kirk B — Google review
Entrance is very confusing, it’s not clear where to go when you enter. You are stood in a corridor with toilets down to the right and kitchen to the left. We were not the only ones who were confused. Having made it up the stairs to the terrace we were greeted by a wonderful view. Portion size was large (as we’ve found in many places in Albania) and food was tasty. We enjoyed everything that we ordered EXCEPT the meal which contained cucumber and the pasta which was without flavour or appealing appearance. We made the waiter aware that the girl had food allergy and we were assured nothing had cucumber inside. Please take extra special attention to food allergies in the future as there can be serious reactions/ consequences. Luckily we could taste and see the cucumber and asked for the dish to be taken away (and we were not charged for it). Another minus were the flies and wasps, but that’s nature. Service was okay and so were the prices
Sam — Google review
The Friendly House is not very friendly. The waiter was rude. Service was very poor and the food is overpriced. A good alternative is right next door. Before you go up the alley to unfriendly house, look to your left. A nice little sidewalk cafe there called Lundra 2 serves great food at a fair price with Friendly service.
Craig O — Google review
It's a popular stop for people's lunch break while on guided tours so can get busy causing service to slow down a little but the staff were friendly I should note. The view from the outdoor dining area is great. I had the baked yoghurt lamb dish which was superbly flavourful and comforting. The house red wine was also nice (worth trying as it is special to Berat).
Andy P — Google review
Went for a quick bite and was very satisfied! The staff is super friendly and attentive, making sure my table had everything we needed. We tried the green salad and Berati schnitzel and it did not disappoint! Highly recommend for a nice meal with a great view in Berat!
Lena O — Google review
It was okay. After being recommended the restaurant by several locals, we expected a bit more to be honest… The pie was tasteless / sour… The yoghurt and lamb dish had very little meat in it; and we found several bones inside. The grilled cheese was nice. Not all dishes were served at once. Service was okay. Terrace was too hot too sit on, and inside the AC made it too cold… 😅
Gloria F — Google review
This was a recommendation from our guide and we loved it. Had a later lunch and ordered the “degustation” option for 2 people. It is a LOT OF FOOD. We were told it is plenty for 2 Albanian men…we are not men not Albanian so it’s a lot. Very tasty and we took most of it with us and enjoyed it again for dinner! Our waiter (Kenios) was fun and explained the story behind the Albanian version of schnitzel. Highly recommend this as it’s a Berat fave. We were well taken care of and sent off after a digestive of Raki. Just loved this spot 💟

Restaurant WilDor & ChefToska is a delightful spot that showcases traditional Albanian cuisine in a beautifully air-conditioned dining area. Guests can savor dishes like grilled vegetables drizzled with balsamic and the local Berati specialty of pork slow-cooked in a clay pot. This restaurant is particularly popular among tour groups, so arriving early for lunch is advisable to secure a table.
I was looking for a halal restaurant option, and I found this restaurant.I had the grandma’s meatballs, grilled cheese, and baklava for dessert. I can’t even describe how amazing the food was — you could taste all the different flavors, and the olive oil was truly magical. The staff were also friendly, and the view was incredible. I highly recommend this place!😊

5 out of 5 stars for everything. The food tasted so good. The bruschet as a starter was lovely. I ordered truffel risotto with extra chicken which was a good add. The beef steak was very tast as well and the french fries were very nice seasoned. The tzaziki was very nice as well. Nice staff very friendly and upstairs a nice view over the bridge.

We ordered Grandma’s meatballs and stuffed eggplant which was absolutely yummy and fresh! I later ordered a chicken dish called Vienez which was one of the tastiest dishes I have ever had in my life! Stuffed with cheese it was so tender and juicy that it literally melted in mouth!

The entire team is super friendly. Our waiter, Artur, explained their typical dishes and gave us great recommendations. The night view of the bridge from the restaurant is incredible, and the food was absolutely spectacular. In fact, I only uploaded two photos because we ate everything before I could take more! Highly recommended.

We were starving when we first arrived into Berat on a Sunday, but unfortunately this restaurant didn’t open until 7pm that night. We did end up coming back a few hours later, and it smelt so good when we walked in! Staff were lovely in this traditional, family-run restaurant, and indeed the most smiley in the town we had encountered until then. My chicken meal was unfortunately a tad bland, but my husband’s beef was “excellent” (it was very fresh and we were very hungry!). Definitely give this place a try.

I was on a cycling tour around Albania, and made a stop in Berat. It was a hot day, around 40°C, and I needed some rest from climbing to the Berat Castle. I entered Grill House Berat, which had just lost electrical power so it was hellishly hot inside. Not only that, but becuse there was no power, their menu was reduced to only a few small items. So I had a large bowl of green salad and a bowl of what we call satarash (don't remember the Albanian name) i.e. the local version of it. It was absolutely delicious (I will post a picture). A few guys who were tending the restaurant at the time were fantastic, really friendly and helpful, and at least one of them spoke excellent English. The power was restored shortly before I was done, but, unfortunately, I had to continue my trip. I would love to come back, and maybe I will, because Berat is a great place and now I know there is at least one place in town where food and service are great.

Nice terrace overlooking the river. Unfortunately, the food is mediocre. The "vienez" (schnitzel roll stuffed with cheese and walnuts) was reheated, not freshly fried. The vegetable soup tasted like meat. The filled eggplants were dry. Only the zucchini in yogurt sauce and the "kasata" (traditional semifreddo dessert) were enjoyable.

Lovely restaurant with traditional Albanian food. We had the traditional lamb disk with rice and yoghurt and stuffed peppers delicious. The restaurant has outdoor and indoor seating. Lovely setting just back from main road. Service is excellent and very friendly staff and very well spoken English. Definitely worth seeking out and would recommend to anyone

I had a great experience at the restaurant of Beratino Hotel. The food was delicious, fresh, and well-prepared, offering a nice variety of traditional and modern dishes. The atmosphere was very pleasant — clean, beautifully arranged, and with a stunning view that made the whole experience even more enjoyable. I highly recommend it for anyone visiting Berat who wants to enjoy a tasty meal in a relaxing and scenic setting.

Great view of the river and gorica. Food was delicious but a bit salty. Pumpkin byrek was good but couldn’t taste the pumpkin.

This restaurant is a true gem! As a family-run business, you can feel the heart and soul in everything they do. Despite being fully packed, the food arrived surprisingly quickly, and every bite was fresh and delicious. I was truly touched by the waiter’s humility and attentiveness – it’s rare to experience such service these days. A huge compliment also goes to the ladies in the kitchen, whose skill and dedication brought these amazing flavors to life. We will definitely be coming back!

What an unforgettable experience in the heart of old town Berat! Just ring the bell, and you’re warmly welcomed by the incredibly friendly staff. The atmosphere is authentic and inviting, and the wine is simply delightful – rich in flavor and beautifully presented. A true hidden gem where hospitality and taste come together perfectly. 🍷💫

A true family-run restaurant where the guest always comes first! Even with a full house, the food arrived in record time, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The service was attentive and humble, and the atmosphere warm and homely. Special recognition to the waiter’s wife and mother in the kitchen for their fantastic work! Highly recommended! 🤍

The food was very delicious! The man who served us was very nice would highly recommend to go there. We sat outside and had a nice view on the mountain in a private setting. We ordered the salad, stuffed eggplants and the meatballs. Each dish had his fresh flavour!

Seriously the best meal I’ve had on my trip. Family owned - super nice and beautiful restaurant located in the heart of Old Town Berat. Mario and his family make delicious dishes daily. So glad to have stumbled upon upon it! PLUS a window for wine and Raki!!! A MUST. Thank you for a wonderful time.

We came for the wine window and stayed for a delicious lunch! Red wine was lovely, stuffed eggplant… I’ll be craving for weeks to come… those caramelised onions! The meatballs with garlic paste were divine! Staff are super friendly and the service is quick. Highly recommend.

Hotel
Hotel Onufri is a top choice for accommodation near the Osum River and Berat Castle. The hotel offers unbeatable prices, making it a budget-friendly option for travelers. Most rooms are doubles or twins with deluxe options, as well as a budget option. The spacious and clean rooms feature ornate wood carvings on the ceilings and modern amenities like mini fridges and large desks. The location is ideal for exploring the nearby attractions on foot, including Berat Castle and various restaurants.
As a tour guide I always write reviews about good places only. Onufri hotel has been from the start one of my favourite hotels in Berat, based on the opinions of my guests from around the world. A week ago I was with a couple from Netherlands and they enjoyed everything, especially the space of the rooms and being so clean. Food and atmosphere are awesome! Special respect for the staff that never gets tired and always service with smile and kindness. I highly recommend especially, this classic, authentic Berat architecture and hospitality. ☀️🇦🇱👏👏👏

Central location, walking distance to both castle and city centre. Staff friendly and willing to help. However, unfortunately the manageress made us pay -in advance- almost double the regular rate for arranging a taxi to the winery, whilst said taxi never even showed up for the return journey (the owner had to drive us back). Please just walk 50 meters downhill to the regular taxistand if you need one. Our room was very small. We were using a backpack and duffel bag so could put those on the floor but if you’re travelling with a suitcase there’s nowhere to open that except for the bed.

Location is good The room is quite big Parking available The city view room had nonblocking curtains. Surroundings noisy until 23:00 Service okay, absent reception If you ask for coffee in the breakfast, it is extra... the coffee provided in the breakfast is undrinkable

You have to stay here. Just a short walk from town. With parking. Room was less than 100 euro for 3 people with continental breakfast. Aircon was excellent. Very quiet even had a rooster wake me up in the morning. Nice walk up to castle and you can go early. Get some great pictures.
