Miaouli Square, located in the heart of Ermoupolis on the island of Syros, is a grand 19th-century square adorned with neoclassical municipal buildings and palm trees. This majestic marble square serves as the vibrant center of the island, featuring a music stage embellished with depictions of Apollo and the muses, charming cafes, and a striking statue honoring Admiral Andreas Miaoulis from the Greek war of independence.
Beautiful Square, lots of history definitely worth a visit. Well maintained, easy to find. Parking available. Toilets nearby. Very clean. Can be short on shade if in summer.
Con B — Google review
Worth a visit that is a large square for visitors and locals to hang out. There are benches to sit and watch the locals. There are restaurants and shops nearby. If you’re in the area, make sure you visit the old town hall which is steps away.
Melanie E — Google review
You should walk in the Town Hall for a few minutes if you’re strolling around town. The city hall also serves as the lower and intermediate court and there’s a cafe frequented by lawyers and their (arrested) clients. The second floor host the mayor’s office and the city council’s deliberation chamber - that is quite well presented with large paintings from the last century and quite out of place for an island in the Cyclades
Konstantinos R — Google review
Amazing square where all young and old gather once the heat of the day has passed. Beautiful with many shops and places to eat surrounding.

One of the best and more vibrant spots on Ermoupoli. Nice and big square, with an interesting architecture. Situated in the heart of the town. Surrounding by a variety of shops. Do not miss a visit to the glorious town hall of Syros when strolling around.

Miaouli square is at the heart of Ermoupolis Syros. In front of the square there's a Andreas Miaoulis statue with two cannons and behind that you can see maybe the most beautiful Town Hall in Greece, the Syros municipal Town Hall. There are palm trees outside of the building as you can see in the photos.

Performing arts theater
The Apollon Theater in Hermoupolis, Syros, is a must-see attraction that reflects the island's rich cultural heritage. This 19th-century theater, modeled after Milan's La Scala, stands as a symbol of the town's cultural prosperity and hosts impressive performances throughout the year. The venue is renowned for hosting events such as Animasyros and the Festival of the Aegean, featuring exceptional classical music performances.
Such a priceless experience watching the performance of The Barber of Seville in Italian from a box on the side of the stage. The venue is of astonishing beauty, it seats maybe around 150 people which makes every performance very intimate.
Dimitra K — Google review
The show was sold out but we were told we can get last minute tickets at the door. We were there 30 mins before the show, told to wait out which we did. People were queuing up and tickets were being checked but suddenly stopped because there was a mass of ticketless people and behind them the people with tickets lining up - what a mess. No crowd control whatsoever. Everyone was just standing still and waiting for either their tickets to be checked or to be allowed to go in. So we never made it in because the chaos was already the show. I give the star for the love of arts, the artists performing and the building but the staff needs a crowd control class.
Incisu U — Google review
It was built in 1862-1864 according to designs by Italian architect Pietro Sampò and inaugurated on 20 April 1864.

An interesting place, worth a visit. Very well maintained. There is a tiny museum. It becomes more interesting if you read the history of the theater before going. Check online, if you are lucky, there will be an ongoing opera or a theatre play.

One of the best places to see on Syros island. Entrance of 2€ applies. Helpful employees. The theater itself is well maintained and there is a small museum at the top floor.
Vivianna K — Google review
A visit to the Apollo Theater is an essential part of any trip to Ermoupoli. This beautiful building is a powerful symbol of the island's immense cultural and economic boom in the 19th century. It was constructed rapidly between 1862 and 1864 to designs by the Italian architect Pietro Sampò. Although the exterior is relatively simple and neoclassical, the interior is where the magic lies. Sampò was reportedly inspired by at least four Italian theaters, including the famous La Scala in Milan, earning the Apollo the nickname "La Piccola Scala" (The Little Scala). The theater officially opened on April 20, 1864, with a performance of Verdi's "Rigoletto". The velvet seats and ornate ceiling paintings (restored later) create an atmosphere of pure 19th-century elegance. Even if you don't attend a performance, just stepping inside to see the beautiful auditorium is worth it.
Παντελής Δ — Google review
Lovely theater - well worth it to catch a show here. Instead of an orchestra seat you should go for the mezzanine or upper story cubicles (helps with COVID too as nobody is wearing masks). Note: (almost) no AC during shows. Dress light!
Konstantinos R — Google review
One of the most beautiful theatres I’ve saw. The 2€ entry fee is defo worth paying. The theatre resembles the famous Scalia from Milan. It’s really nice decorated and preserved. The staff working there is friendly and helpful.

The Church of Agios Nikolaos is a stunning Byzantine church located near Miaouli Square in Ermoupoli, Syros. Dating back to 1870, it features a magnificent silver-plated icon of St. Nicholas crafted in Moscow. The church boasts a large blue dome and an exquisite square at the front entrance, making it one of the most beautiful Orthodox churches in Ermoupoli. Its architecture combines elements of Christian, Orthodox, Catholic, and ancient Greek styles.
Absolutely Beautiful!!! Such a nice church to visit. Dress appropriately, be respectful and you'll enjoy this magnificent orthodox church. The attention to detail and size is just astonishing. Not so much parking so I would go on foot. Pay a donation, light a candle. I would return and recommend. I was here for a wedding service and it was so beautiful.
Con B — Google review
The church itself and the icon of Saint Nicholas are worth "10 Stars"..!! but the lady at the church who was looking after the church needs to be informed or removed as she has no idea and telling people not to take photos or videos when in fact is a church where many weddings and Baptisms are help !! She kept interrupting every time anyone tried to take a photo!

This beautiful Orthodox Church of Agios Nikolaos (Saint Nicholas) is located close to Miaouli Square. It is dedicated to Saint Nicholas, who is the town’s patron saint. Its interior is impressive with marble throughout its interior and crystal chandeliers. This 19th century structure has two bell towers with a blue dome.

Naós Agíou Nikoláou - The Jewel of Syros Architecture The Naós Agíou Nikoláou (Saint Nicholas Church) in Ermoupolis is far more than just a place of worship; it is a monumental testament to the wealth, faith, and architectural prowess of Syros in its golden age. Its presence is immediately captivating, defining the skyline of the aristocratic Vaporia neighborhood. Imposing Grandeur and Design, This church is often recognized by its striking, elegant exterior. It features two magnificent bell towers and is a masterful blend of Byzantine and Western architectural styles. Built entirely of marble, the sheer size and intricate detailing of the facade—including the stunning clock—reflect the island's prosperity in the 19th century. Its stately position, commanding a view over the sea, makes it one of the most photographed structures on the island. Awe-Inspiring Interior, Stepping inside the church is an experience in itself. The interior is lavishly decorated with sumptuous frescoes, glittering chandeliers, and beautifully carved wooden iconostases. The opulent atmosphere is both grand and deeply moving, leaving visitors in awe of the craftsmanship and the dedication put into its preservation. It truly feels like a cathedral, providing a profound sense of peace and historical continuity. Location and Vaporia Views, The church’s location in Vaporia is perfect. After admiring the architecture, you can enjoy walking through the scenic streets of this neighborhood, which is often referred to as the "Little Venice" of Syros due to its seaside mansions. The views from the church grounds over the sparkling Aegean Sea are absolutely breathtaking, especially at sunset. A visit to Naós Agíou Nikoláou is essential for anyone exploring Syros. It is a stunning beacon of faith, history, and architectural beauty that is truly unforgettable.

San Michali Food & Culture offers a delightful culinary experience with its exquisite local cheese varieties like San Michali cheese, xynotyro, marathotyri and gruyere that complement every dish perfectly. The restaurant has a newly renovated space with tasteful decor and excellent service. It provides fresh, locally grown food with free-range and vegetarian options. The location offers a stunning view of the ocean, while the staff is friendly and attentive.
A five senses experience. Possibly the best place in Syros. It is open almost all day. You can go from 10.00 in the morning for brunch and coffee, then have lunch at noon, dinner in the evening and amazing cocktails at night. All that with breathtaking views to the Aegean sea in a location that makes you feel as if you are on a low altitude flight. From one side Tinos and Myconos in the background on the other side a deserted island with a light house and the famous Vaporia neighborhood of Ermoupoli. And as if all this is not enough, when the food comes your palet is rewarded from unique tasteful food from a talented young chef. Prime seasoned meats, Greek plates with a twist to accommodate local products. Food beyond the ordinary. And don't forget to taste the sweets at the end. Once you finish dinner you can move to the bar where you can enjoy interesting cocktails or any other liquor you prefer at the sounds of music that suits the scenery. Overall a very well designed and placed all day - restaurant with extremely friendly and polite staff. Bonus is the municipal parking right above the restaurant, making it one of the few that you can park your car 1 min away in the whole of Ermoupoli. A must visit secret jewel of Syros P. S. A mind popping location overlooking the ocean and a fantastic array of interesting and innovative foods made this a very memorable experience. The staff were friendly and funny and made our visit even more pleasant. The wines were also fantastic. Undoubtedly one of the best restaurants on Syros. Sometimes the dishes seemed a little too over engineered at the expense of the taste but they were certainly inventive and we didn't leave hungry! Don't miss this place.

The place is newly renovated with tasteful decor, inside and out. The service was excellent! Attentive and very helpful with our choices. It's very clean with no cats meowing for food as other places have. The food is very fresh, locally grown and delicious! Free range and vegetarian options available. You must come here if visiting Syros, it's worth the drive out of town for this gem! Try to visit during sunset so you can also see the magnificent views! I'm including some pictures of the chicken, free range pork and spare ribs we had. Also you must try the amazing fried potatoes! 5 stars all the way!

Anástasis (Church of the Resurrection of Christ)

Greek Orthodox church
Anástasis, also known as the Church of the Resurrection of Christ, is perched atop Vrodados Hill in Ermoupoli, offering breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea and the city below. The church was constructed in 1870 on the site originally intended for a Greek Revolution memorial. Visitors can reach Anástasis by car or enjoy a scenic walk through Vrontado, a serene residential area with abandoned yet picturesque houses.
Beautiful Greek Orthodox Church on top of a hill with amazing view of Syros. Really worth the effort to get there!
Alberto S — Google review
The Orthodox Church of Resurrection is located on the top of Vrodados Hill, overlooking the Aegean sea and the city of Ermoupoli unfolding beneath, it was built in 1870, on the spot where a memorial of the Greek Revolution was supposed to be erected. To visit the church, you can do it by car or on feet, in our case we preferred walking to the top whilst enjoying the views and taking photos of the alleys and the traditional white and blue facades, very representative of the greek islands. Once we arrived at the top, we sit a little beneath a tree to enjoy the breathtaking views of Ermoupoli harbour and its surroundings, the walking to the top is not as bad as you could expect, I could say it worth the effort. The church has many neo-classical architectonic elements, specially identified in its exterior, and inside, it follows the same architectonical design with numerous magnificent frescoes, many of which are of major artistic and historic significance, being the marble the most dominant used material. We wished to do some aerial footage with our drone, but unfortunately this day was outstanding windy being not possible for our drone to take off without losing it, just keep in mind this if you are planning to do the same.

Markos Vamvakaris Exhibition

4.2
(795)
Heritage museum
The Markos Vamvakaris Exhibition, nestled in the heart of Ano Syros near the bustling Piatsa, pays tribute to one of Greece's most iconic musicians and songwriters. Established in 1995 within a charming old house, this intimate museum showcases memorabilia that reflects Vamvakaris' life and his profound impact on rebetiko folk music—a genre that resonated deeply with the urban working class during the early 20th century.
*GoogleMaps Open Hours listing is INCORRECT* if you’re going to Ano Syros and have any interest in music, I highly recommend a quick stop. Unique, very small but also very interesting as we didn’t know anything about Markos or this type of Greek music before visiting. Definitely worth the €2 especially since the young lady played some of Markos’s music while we viewed the pictures and other personal items. Be sure to ask about hearing the music if it is not already playing.
Brandy Q — Google review
Small exhibition with some items and few info on Markos Vamvakaris life. It is only 2 euros but they definitely could do a better job by playing some music and giving more details about his life. Nice view from the balcony

Vasilis K — Google review
The museum is located at Ano Syros.Inside you can see some personal items of the song writer and singer Mark Vamvakaris such as his music instruments or his pipe, some notes written by him.He has played a big role into Greek traditional music and he is one of the most important people in Greek music. The ticket of the museum costs 2€.
Sakis K — Google review
This place is tiny for a museum. You can literally spend 10 minutes and still be able to see the whole thing. But, it does worth a visit when you are in Syros as you are able to find out all these interesting facts about M. Vamvakaris and also see some personal items, letters, photos and transcripts of the famous Greek composer.
Evgenia K — Google review
Yes it was March and only just opening for the year but.... I don't believe people are that interested in Markos's old watch or passport! - WE WANT TO HEAR THE MUSIC! - and there was absolutely none! A background of one of his many recordings playing should be the minimum. Examples of early and late recordings through headphones would be good. More about rebetiko, the instruments, the sound of them, the evolution of rebetiko and an example of a modern group playing? There is so much audio that could be done and IT COULD BE GREAT - especially if a keen rebetiko player became involved with this museum.
Robert E — Google review
Museum dedicated to Markos Vamvakaris, the Master of Rebetiko music, born and raised in Syros, If you by any chance bump into his autobiography in English, dont miss the chance to read it! It will be one of the best reads ever! Check the review by New York Times and the Guardian for more info!! Markos was indeed one of the most interesting and fascinating characters to come out of 20th century Greece!

The Catholic Cathedral of Saint George, also known as Agios Georgios, has a rich history dating back to 1200 AD and has been rebuilt several times. The present church, built in 1834, is adorned with magnificent decorations and significant paintings such as the Lady of Hope, revered by Syrian Catholics. Situated on the hill of Anos Syros, it offers a different experience from other Greek-Orthodox churches in Greece.
Visiting Saint George's Cathedral in Ano Syros is an enchanting journey into the heart of Cycladic charm and spiritual serenity. Perched atop the picturesque hill of Ano Syros, this historic Catholic cathedral offers a mesmerizing blend of architectural beauty, cultural richness, and breathtaking views. As you ascend the narrow, cobblestone streets leading to the cathedral, you’re greeted by a maze of whitewashed buildings adorned with vibrant bougainvillea. The journey itself feels like a step back in time, offering glimpses of the island's medieval character and tranquility. The cathedral, dating back to the 13th century, is an awe-inspiring sight with its elegant facade and understated charm. Inside, the serene atmosphere is complemented by simple yet beautiful decor, featuring a blend of Catholic and Cycladic elements. The stained glass windows and intricate altar details tell stories of faith and devotion that have endured through centuries. One of the highlights of the visit is the panoramic view from the cathedral’s courtyard. Overlooking the Aegean Sea, the town of Ermoupolis, and the rolling hills of Syros, the vista is nothing short of magical, especially during sunset. The peaceful silence combined with the stunning scenery makes it a perfect spot for quiet reflection or simply soaking in the beauty of the moment. Whether you’re drawn by history, spirituality, or the allure of the Cyclades, Saint George's Cathedral is a must-visit destination in Ano Syros. It’s a place where the past and present harmoniously converge, leaving visitors with a sense of wonder and a deep appreciation for the island’s cultural heritage.

What a beautiful church perched atop the mountain in Ano Syros! We took a cab to the top (as recommended by everyone we met that are local) and re-iterate the intelligence of that decision as this church has many steps to the top! While visiting Syros my friends and I went to this restaurant. The falafel and the spring rolls where very nice, but I ordered the mushroom pasta which can be made vegan by swapping the cheese for "vegan" cheese (at least the menu and the waiter said so) and I asked the waiter three times to please make it vegan, because I am extremely lactose intolerant. When the food was brought out I noticed Feta Cheese in it. My friends also tried it and were 100% sure that that was not vegan Feta Cheese. I grabbed my plate and went inside to tell them and then the waiter, the owner and the cook tried to convince me that it was vegan. Only after I told them that I am allergic to dairy one of them said that they have to make me a new plate, because "maybe there was some leftover cheese in the pan". I got the new plate and this time there was no Feta in it luckily. It tasted okay. I understand that sometimes people make mistakes and orders get mixed up, but I am so angry that they straight up lied to me and only started taking me seriously after I told them I was allergic. I will not go there again

Iliovasilema on Galissas beach is renowned for its Greek creative cuisine, while allou yialou on Kini beach offers an exceptional seafood menu by the sea. Avant Garden, located near the Apollon Theater, is celebrated for its fine dining experience and high-quality Greek gastronomy.
I am still upset my eating experience at this restaurant is over. That was one of the most amazing meals I’ve ever had. The starter was superb. The main was out of this world, and the desert was like nothing I could ever dream of. I had the shrimp starter, Beef fillet, and loukoumi rose petal ice cream for dessert. The atmosphere was excellent. The waiting staff was really attentive and I have nothing but compliments for the chef and the staff for this exceptional experience. It’s a must visit for anyone on the island!

the food deserves high praise—each bite was a delight—but the service fell short. If the front-of-house team can raise its level of care, attentiveness, and responsiveness to match that of the kitchen, this restaurant would offer an unforgettable all-around dining experience.

Nice setting, good service — but overpriced for what you get The restaurant has a beautiful setting and a really nice atmosphere. Staff were friendly and welcoming, and the food we had was tasty. However, the menu was quite limited and the portions were on the small side. Prices felt more in line with high-end restaurants in larger European cities, but the overall quality didn’t quite match that level. A pleasant experience, but not the best value for money.

A truly unique experience. The inner courtyard is beautiful and peaceful, hidden from the busy streets by vine-covered walls. The staff make you feel really welcome and well taken care of. The food is excellent, both in quality and flavor, and just when you think you’re done, the bill comes with complimentary mini cakes and pies. Definitely recommend!

What an incredible experience. The setting is stunning in a quiet garden in the middle of Syros. The decorations are tasteful and we enjoyed a wonderful evening with friends. The food was spectacular, some of the best dishes I’ve tried ever. Generous portions for the price and beautifully displayed. One of our friends is vegetarian and the kitchen kindly adjusted dishes to accommodate her. Caroline was very kind and attentive and there to explain ok our dishes (in English, French, and Dutch!). 100% would recommend!

We had an amazing experience at Avant garden, you step from the city into an oasis of calmth, the service by Caroline was amazing and very attentive. The food was also very delicious and innovative. Would definitely come back to this place next time we are in syros!

One of THE best dining experiences I've ever had and definitely the best one in Greece! We had the crispy shrimp starter, beef fillet, tagliollini pasta, and chocolate and loukoumi rose petal ice cream desserts paired with a local rose wine. The lovely atmosphere, exceptional service and incredible food all contributed to an out of this world experience! Truly one of the most phenomenal evenings we've had. I would rate it 10 out of 5 if I could! Can't wait to come back!

There are places you visit where everything simply feels right — and this charming restaurant, tucked away in a peaceful courtyard, is exactly that. The tranquil setting creates a calm, intimate atmosphere that feels like an escape from the busy city. The food is truly exceptional. Each dish was beautifully presented, perfectly balanced in flavor, and made with high-quality, carefully selected ingredients. You can taste the passion and craftsmanship in every bite — from the starters to the dessert, everything was flawless. Equally impressive was the service: genuinely warm, attentive, and professional without being intrusive. The staff made us feel welcome from the first moment and were happy to share their knowledge of the menu and wines with enthusiasm and care. In short, this restaurant offers a rare combination of outstanding cuisine, heartfelt service, and a setting that invites you to relax and enjoy. A true culinary treasure that deserves every bit of praise.

Restaurant
Sta Vaporia, which means "on ships" in Greek, is a charming district in Ermoupolis known for its well-preserved mansions dating back to the 1850s. This aristocratic quarter was once home to wealthy sea captains and now features some of these historic buildings converted into boutique hotels. The area boasts the beautiful Square of Miaoulis and the grand neoclassical Town Hall designed by Ernst Ziller.
Beautiful little place, with lovely indoor seating and open windows across the sea, as well as a gorgeous little terrace just down the hill. The brunch menu goes until 5pm so expect brunch foods! The service was fast and friendly, the price was good, and the food was excellent. The view was also beautiful.

Great place at the best spot of our favorite beach in Syros. Excellent service, tasty and healthy food! One day we were in a rush cause our ferry was leaving and they served us super quick! Thanks :)

Nice views, however the food was average at best. The menu is very limited to only few dishes, therefore I expexted great cullinary experience. However the price tag of 20 - 30 EUR per dish does not meet quality, taste and size of portion.

One of the most picturesque spots in Syros by far!! Excellent views for a coffee, lunch or dinner. Do not miss their home made lemonade from freshly squeezed local lemons:) Good quality of snacks and coffee. Can't comment on food, as the kitchen was still closed when we went. I would highly recommend booking a table in advance, especially if you are planning a visit for lunch or dinner. This place can get extremely busy!!

Excellent service overall. The staff is very polite and they are very willing to answer questions and suggest plates from the menu. The plates are interesting to try all of them with creative ideas. The view is also amazing as one can see Ermoupoli from high up. Definetely call to make a reservation so that you make sure you find a place as it can get pretty busy. Overall it is recommended for Syros as it offers a good balance of food and scenery.

Great views, and excellent service with delicious food. The fish was cooked very well and had some delicious veggies on the plate. However the food was quite expensive - €9.50 for a Greek salad and €18-20 for mains is a lot more than other places on Syros. I suppose with the beautiful views, you should expect this. It had a touristy vibe - It’s not traditional Greek food, also they were out of non alcoholic beer and said they only usually have Heineken free (which was disappointing considering all the amazing local Greek brands they could choose like Fix, Eza, Mythos, etc).

Delicious meal in a lovely location. We ordered the lamb (deliciously soft) and the kids got the burgers (teriyaki sauce gives it a sweet kick but very good). The Greek salad was also delicious.

Staff should not be rolling their eyes if we decide to eat out on the terrace insted of staying in. We even took out the drinks oursevles. Prices and menu alligned with stunning views. Staff not so much. Do better!

The menu also features delectable breakfast and brunch choices, with vegan selections available. Additionally, the brewery provides to-go fresh pressed juices, perfect for enjoying while exploring on warm days.
A relaxed laneway cafe in Ermoupoli. The food is fresh and delicious and the coffee is excellent. It’s is one of the cafes we return to each visit to Syros. The food is served in handmade ceramics made on Syros. The staff are friendly.

Hidden gem of a coffee spot. Surprisingly good cold brew! The yogurt dish was great as well. Would recommend as a great spot to relax and get out of the sun.
Raymond — Google review
Coffee & juice was fine probably the only plus I can give this place. The food here is way too over the top and over complicated, the ingredients seem fresh but for example the scramble they have is just trying toooo hard especially with the activated charcoal mayo. The eggs were extremely soggy and the combination of the color scheme was extremely off putting. Waste of 32 euro very disappointed with my meal.

Best flat white we had in the Cyclades! Best shakshuka we ever had! It just absolutely perfect! You must try it! The service was quickly, the atmosphere is relaxed, they serve the best speciality coffee in the Cyclades, the food is amazing! You can also work from their terrace as they have a couple of power outlets;) I totally recommend it and will definitely come back!

Cute spot for a coffee if you don’t mind the wait during peak season. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed by the lack of allergen information and the absence of ANY gluten-free options on the menu. While the staff were lovely and polite, they were not knowledgeable about allergens, which in 2025 feels like a basic expectation for any place selling food. It seems more geared toward the “Instagram moment” than serious foodies. I’d recommend grabbing a coffee and an ice cream from the place across the street instead (they clearly do their homework and provide transparent allergen information).

Best strong flat white in town! It is mesmerising to watch the barrister prepares the orders, his attention to each cup of coffee is a performance. Food is decent but like most cafes around that area, it is not cheap.

I was really pleasantly surprised to find this kind of coffee quality on a not so big island. Charming place with great decor, good music and really good coffee.

Perfect brunch place in Ermoupoli. The spot is gorgeous, the food was delicious and the music wonderful. I could go there every day in the morning to start my day in a positive way.
