Val-Cenis in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Val-Cenis, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Val-Cenis is a family-friendly ski resort in the French Alps, known for its extensive slopes, reliable snow and views of the Vanoise National Park. In winter it offers downhill and Nordic skiing, snowshoeing and easy access to high-altitude landscapes without the crowds of larger resorts. Summer brings hiking, cycling and climbing, with trails leading to lakes, pastures and traditional stone villages. The area also preserves local Savoyard culture, reflected in its chapels, forts and regional cuisine.
With favorites like Mont-Cenis, French Ski School - Termignon, and Le Trappeur Termignon, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like ALPAZUR Hôtel-restaurant- Crêperie-PUB-Salle de séminaire-SPA SAVOIE 73 and Le relais du col de mont cenis so you can get the best taste of Val-Cenis while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Parc national de la Vanoise

National park
Parc national de la Vanoise is France's premier national park, boasting a diverse array of wildlife including wolves, lynx, and rare bird species. Situated in the Haute Maurienne region with the Italian border on one side, it offers a remote and mountainous landscape perfect for nature enthusiasts. The park features pristine summits exceeding 3000m and prohibits drone flights to preserve its natural beauty.
Fantastic high level skiing with a large and well connected network of pistes and lifts, and a good snow record.
Neil M — Google review
Beautiful national park with very impressive views. Many and trekkings are do-able for not so experienced hikers in summer, though some walks and parts of walks require more technical skills and specific equipment such as crampons. In early june, many refuges are still closed, contrary to what some information leaflets say. I’d strongly suggest calling in advance if you want to be sure a refuge is open.
Nel E — Google review
Great mountains for hiking and climbing, with wildlife and wild flowers, steep rock faces and glaciers, that can be surrounded in a 5-day trip linked by a god network of huts and a few coles around 2600 m in altitude.
Manfred O — Google review
Mainly a ski resort but visited in summer. Amazing place if you have good walking legs. Scenery is awsome, especially from the mountain tops if reasonable fit to walk, or via multitude of cable cars.
Adam M — Google review
I was here at the winter for skiing at tignes val claret, not for summer hiking, but is is a very beautiful area weach i have to come back to for tracking also... As a ski resorte it is simply perfect, not much to say more then that.
Yonatan A — Google review
Plenty of hikes and local people are friendly and welcoming. If you like nature and enjoy great views and good air...it's the ideal place to go
Jean-Marc L — Google review
One of the largest, pristine French national parks with summits well over 3000m. No drone flights allowed. Bordering Italy it was home of the 1992 Olympic games with such ski resorts as Les Arcs, Méribel, Courchevel, Tignes and Val d'Isère. It is also home of magnificent baroque churches and chapels nested in beautiful mountain villages Summer mountaineering is marvelous with a plethora of wild animals and walks for all ages.
Jean-Marc D — Google review
We did the 6 day tour with a 6 and a 12 year old, August 2018. This is a top trek, many glaciers, marmots, ibex, chamoix. Most hikers are French, huts gets busy but we booked 2 weeks before. Bring rain gear..

Beautifull place, perfect for campers with a lott of camp spots all around.

A stunning French/Italian mountain pass with views to die for on the Italian side. The huge reservoir at the top is crystal clear and fed by several cascading mountain streams. Apart from the wonderful natural scenery there are also some marvellous buildings, old and new, including the wooden church.
Peter T — Google review
Very beautiful road! Altitude 2085 m. The term "Mont Cenis" could be derived from mont des cendres ("mountain of ashes"). According to tradition, following a forest fire, a great quantity of ashes accumulated on the ground, thus the name. The path of ashes was found during the building work of the route.
Kestutis V — Google review

Superb site. We also enjoyed the descent on foot to get there. However, we would have liked to have been in the water more often during the water hike. We recommend. (Translated by Google) We went rafting at the beginning of July. Big negative point: the duration!! 20/25min of descent!!! We were amazed... it's about 2 hours on the site... So we got the explanation, it was that the water was high so there were a lot of rapids and as a result... instead of 1h15 apparently, we took less than half an hour... for 40€ it hurts a bit . But hey! The staff is so friendly, super professional, the river and the course are really cool. Indeed a lot of fast, it was super sporty. But I think that the course is a bit short whatever happens... it's frustrating. (Original) Nous avons fait le rafting début juillet. Gros point négatif: la durée !! 20/25min de descente !!! On a halluciné...

He was very rude and made derogatory remarks. During our climb, he offered no emotional support. In addition, he left us behind by moving far too quickly for beginners. An unpleasant initial experience. (Original) Je me suis inscrit à la via ferrata avec notre guide « Jeanmi ». This is one of the best ski resorts I've been. My drone got trapped at the top of a tree (15m above ground) and the SKI PATROL (special thanks to Nathan) climbed the tree to recover it and were extremely nice and proffesional. Yes, it's a bit outmoded and could use a refurb, but the rooms are clean, beds are good and there is plenty of hot water to fill the tub after a day of skiing. Staff is very friendly. Good value for money.

Regarding the creperie, the food itself is ok and fast enough. Service is blunt and to the point, no effort made to speak slower french or use easier to understand verbs and food served did not match what was ordered. When issue raised they asked (we think) why we hadn't spoken to them - but good luck finding staff after you've ordered. Table next to us spent 5 mins walking in circles looking for staff.

Nice, clean, spacious rooms and bathroom. Safe place for bicycles and motorbikes. Very nice breakfast buffet. Even if you don't stay, please try the restaurant, its especially good and will cater to your wishes!! We stayed in July 2019. Recommend! =)

Good pancakes (crepes) and service. For once, not overly greasy pancakes compared to most other places. The sugar and butter pancakes were amazing. And the Montagnarde (with reblochon cheese, egg, potatoes and crude ham) was really nice too. The owner ensured the service and the service was good and efficient. Prices are reasonable. Recommended for a family in particular.

Two lunch two different experiences, the first one was great "Plat du jour " and a friendly efficient service , the second one a very average food served by an extremely unpleasant waiter .

Restaurant
Le Relais du Col de Mont Cenis is a mountain restaurant offering great value for money and a warm, courteous atmosphere. The decor is rich in history and humor, with incredible views of the mountainous landscape separating France from Italy. The large lake adds to the magical environment. The owner, Simone, serves traditional French food and is known for her hospitality. Visitors can also enjoy dining options at the base of the slopes or ski back to their accommodations for a homemade lunch in some cases.
I love this place so much. Visited in 2023 and made sure to visit again on our recent trip. Went here Christmas day on our walk to lac du mont cenis. I absolutely adore the old lady who is a true story teller. She tells all the history of the area and is so passionate about her village. Lovely setting, traditional food and dress

Lovely stop off the slopes - not the easiest to get to but well worth it! Be prepared for the non stop narration by Simone who is full of interesting historical facts about the area and loves engaging with all the customers... Assiette de skieur and tartiflette both amazing

When you made it to the col de mont Cenis on 2038m on your bicycle you deserve a treat at this place. Around the restaurant are many markers of the history of the place.

A wonderful place for a hot meal after hiking to the Lac de Val Cenis. The staff were very welcoming and entertained us with great stories about the history of the place. Definitely worth a stop, there are not many authentic places left like this...

really a super cozy and atmospheric place to have a drink, or eat, or just have a good time. Unfortunately we were there the last evening of our holiday, otherwise we would have come more often. The duck was really very tasty. also the service and staff were fantastic and can recommend everyone to go here.

Great food!! We had the salmon and the tartiflette as main dishes and they were amazing. Although it was hard cause we were full, couldn't not ask for the Tiramisu, so so so good. The waitress was super nice and helpful, it was a great experience worth the price. Thank you!

A small family run pizzeria that servers great pizzas. In a town where it's hard to find a table in a restaurant if you haven't reserved in advance, this pizzeria was our savior. They deliver too.
