The Théâtre antique d'Orange is a remarkable Roman theater located in Orange, France. This UNESCO-protected site is one of the most impressive Roman attractions in the country and one of only three intact Roman theaters worldwide. With its colossal size designed to accommodate 10,000 spectators, it boasts a well-preserved stage wall that stands at 37m high, 103m wide, and 1.8m thick.
The theatre is just amazing! 2,000 years old and still standing and serving it's original purpose. Given its age it's in a truly remarkable state of preservation. If you are in the area this is a must see. The self-guided tour is excellent as is the Virtual Reality experience . The cafes, restaurants and shops in Orange are very typically French and a lovely place to while away a few hours.

Absolutely amazing that this theatre is still standing and so well preserved through history. We loved the audio guide that we could listen to in English and learn more about the history. A must to visit if you are in the area.

Historical & Epic Roman Theater This is one of the best preserved Roman Theaters in Europe. It is 2000 years old, incredible when you see it. They actually still use it for plays, which I find amazing that this theater still serves its original purpose. Highly recommended visit.

Absolutely beautiful! Staff are fantastic and offer audio, visual and virtual reality tour! We bought our own picnic with us as it's allowed! With the tickets you can visit the history museum accross the road for free!
Droid D — Google review
The Théâtre antique d’Orange is one of the best-preserved Roman theatres in the world, built during the reign of Emperor Augustus in the 1st century AD. Located in the town of Orange, Provence, it once seated around 9,000 spectators and served as a center of Roman cultural life. Open year-round with a museum and panoramic views from the upper terraces. Best visited in the morning light for photography or during an evening performance for an unforgettable acoustic experience. *Hidden Details* The Emperor’s Presence: The central niche behind the stage once held a 12-meter statue of Emperor Augustus — not a replica, but a visual reminder that Roman theatre was as much about imperial propaganda as art. A smaller original head fragment is displayed in the site museum. “Echo Wall” Engineering: The stage wall’s limestone blocks were fitted without mortar, creating a natural resonance chamber. Actors didn’t need to shout — the curved design amplified voices perfectly, even to the top seats. Secret Backstage World: Beneath and behind the stage lay corridors, pulley shafts, and trapdoors for stage effects — early Roman “stage machinery.” You can still trace parts of these backstage systems during guided tours. Medieval Reuse: After Rome’s fall, the theatre became a fortress, then a refuge for townspeople during wars. Some homes were literally built into the stands until Napoleon ordered restoration in the 1800s. Ancient Graffiti: On the upper tiers, faint Latin inscriptions and marks made by stonecutters are still visible — craftsmen signed their work or marked seating areas for different social ranks. Acoustic Sweet Spot: Guides often demonstrate that a whisper from the center of the orchestra floor carries clearly to the highest rows — a perfect spot to test Roman sound mastery. Modern Revival: The Chorégies d’Orange festival, revived in 1869, continues the Roman tradition of open-air performances. Modern productions still use the original wall as a natural stage backdrop, with no need for amplification.

What a beautiful place to have a live concert. Also great history. Lots of children on day camp trips, but still not too long of lines. It is very hot in June, but if you tick to the caves where there are many educational exhibits, then it is bearable. I went over a decade ago, and today experience was much nicer. The VR concert experience was a hit with the family.

An excellent example of Roman Ampitheatre architecture still standing today in such excellent condition. The shear size of it is amazing.

Museum of Art and History of Orange

Museum
The Museum of Art and History of Orange is housed in a 17th-century mansion that was once the residence of Georges Van Cuyl, a Dutch nobleman. It consists of two main sections: one dedicated to Gallo-Roman artifacts and the other focusing on the history of Orange from prehistoric times to the present day. The museum boasts exceptional documents, including three Roman cadastral maps engraved on marble.
Nice museum, interesting collection, friendly staff. Really enjoyed it.
Ilona — Google review
Awesome museum! I was a bit rushed so missed some things, but you could spend hours here, it’s way bigger than I thought. They have lots of beautiful painting for well-known artists but also lesser known artists. There’s a whole section for the impressionists at the top which was amazing to see. Book tickets in advance! I waited 30 mins at opening without a ticket, those with tickets walked straight through
Dana — Google review
Interesting museum that suffers from a haphazard collection and probably too little money, more could be done with it. Some very interesting information on the history of Orange (and the vandalism of Louis XIV), as well as Roman remains and works by local artists.
Emmanuel G — Google review
The Museum of Art and History of Orange has some really gorgeous pieces — coins, structures, statuettes — but my visit was a bit disappointing. The front says no photos, which is unusual for a museum, so I couldn’t capture the beautiful works. Some of the exhibits, like the addition of Playmobil scattered around the museum, felt a little too childish seeing as the majority of visitors are adults, or older, and didn’t quite fit with the rest of the collection. Overall, a mixed experience.
Erin G — Google review
After a great visit at the amphitheatre we had to go to the museum to give back the audioguides. Here we met rude service at the counter - for no reason thet were talking badly about us (apperantly they assumed we didnt understand french). A shame a good visit ended that wat.
Anders R — Google review
Entrance is free if you visited the theatre, but the time you lose by walking into this boring museum is already too high a price. Even the icecream shop nextdoor is more culturally interesting.
Brecht — Google review
The roman part and the part on the Oranje-Nassau family is interesting. The rest not so much in my opinion. Top floor is about artist who donated their painting to the museum. But this does not add a lot to the history of Orange, which the museum is about. I would recommend to visit the theatre instead (or combined).
Lieselotte G — Google review
Just a random collection of stuff donated by local collectors, with no attempt to provide a narrative or any context. The art collection on the top floor was worth visiting though.

The Triumphal Arch in Orange is a well-preserved ancient Roman arch dedicated to Emperor Tiberius. It features intricate stone reliefs and stands as a testament to the city's rich history. Visitors can also explore the nearby Roman Theater and informative museum, making it a worthwhile stop for history enthusiasts. The arch's three-arched design and detailed carvings showcase its architectural significance, dating back to the reign of Augustus.
This is one of the must visit places in Paris. Compared to the Eifelltower the view from here is MUCH better. You get a view over many places that you dont get to see from the Eifelltower and the prices to get in are not bad at all, people under 25 from the EU get in for free :)
Leo S — Google review
The Arc de Triomphe of Orange is one of the best-preserved Roman triumphal arches in Europe, built during the reign of Emperor Augustus (27 BC – AD 14) and later dedicated to Emperor Tiberius. Located at the northern entrance to Orange in Provence, the arch was erected to honor veterans of the Gallic Wars and the Second Legion who founded the Roman colony of Arausio (modern Orange). Highlights Construction: Made entirely of local white limestone, standing about 19 m high and 8 m wide, with three arched passages — one central and two smaller side arches. Decoration: Richly carved reliefs depict Roman legions, naval trophies, captured arms, and defeated enemies, celebrating Rome’s military dominance and peace under Augustus. Symbolism: Unlike later triumphal arches in Paris or Rome, it served both as a city gate and a monumental statement of Roman power in the provinces. Preservation: Despite centuries of weathering, it retains much of its original sculptural detail and remains a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Roman Theatre and its surroundings and the Triumphal Arch of Orange (inscribed 1981).

What a beautiful piece of history, the detail that remains is outstanding. There is plenty of seating around the arch . Also 2 large car parks within 30 mtrs. Situated around the arch are seats with a audio description of the history of the arch .
Mick K — Google review
The car park off the island was a very tight manoeuvre for a 6m length van. It was full. So get there early, if going elsewhere from the arch.... I managed to get good photos just going around the round about, as we where unable to park. There is another car park with a 2.5m height barrier.

The Orange Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of Notre Dame de Nazareth, is a Romanesque-style church that was constructed on top of earlier buildings dating back to the 4th century. Inside, visitors can admire numerous paintings and Italian frescoes. The religious affiliation of this cathedral has switched between different faiths over time.
The Cathedral of Orange, AKA Notre-Dame de Nazareth, is currently closed for a major renovation. It won't reopen for 2 years. If you're lucky, you can peek inside when the doors are open!
Georges Y — Google review
Orange’s cathedral was dedicated to Our Lady of Nazareth on the 26th October 1208, in the presence of Guillaume des Baux, Prince of Orange.
Ilona — Google review
Seemed to be a 'tucked away' Cathedral compared to others I've seen. Walking around the exterior the building took in a couple of Streets and at some points attached to buildings, not a standalone structure. Inside was more interesting and the whole visit done within 30 mins. Worth a visit if in Orange.
Julie C — Google review
As cathedrals go, Orange is not large. In fact I have been in bigger parish churches but what it lacks in size it makes up for with interesting art. The side chapels are very interesting with some excellent paintings and statues. It is easy to miss the cathedral when there is the great attraction of the Roman theatre to see but it is definitely worth the time and effort to visit if you like historic buildings.
Tony C — Google review
So beautiful worship place. A must visit whenever you are in Orange
DANY S — Google review
The interesting points of the exterior of this church are the roman portal on the south side, the eastern exterior and the bell tower. They document that this church has a history going back to the early Middle Age. The interior has been remodeled and redecorated in the 19th century.

It was a pleasant discovery to stumble upon La Crémaillère, a cafe that defied the usual Monday closures in Provence. This made planning on such a day quite challenging in the region. Our taste buds were pleasantly surprised by the delectable variety of lunch crepes and accompanied by a refreshing glass of rose. The amicable staff added to the enjoyment of our experience, as they were customer-oriented and accommodating.
The staff was very nice to us. Client friendly! The food was delicious. I ate a salade océane and it was really good. My sister ate a pizza and she was also happy with it. Beautiful view from the inside (on the theatre).

Soooooooo it is Right in front of the theater and has some trees providing some shade which is why we chose this place. The Pizza was mediocre, a little thick out of a weird yellowish dough.. tasted ok. The Cesar Salad was a complete joke - it had around half a kilo of feta, mayonnaise and Cesar Sauce out of a jar and no chicken.. when we asked for it we were bought a huge bowl of very dry chicken coming right out of the fridge. Most of the (student?) waiters were on there phones all the time and vaping in front of the entrance, even when carrying dishes you could see them scrolling an Instagram lol
Dr. D — Google review
Very nice location. In spite of the few people that were sitting here, it took a long time to take our order. People that sat down after us were served first. We only took some drinks. On leaving we think it is polite to say goodbye. Unfortunately there was no response from te staff, because they were nowhere to be seen.

It was nice to find a café open on Monday, the day when everything is usually closed, so it is a difficult day to plan in Provence. We were pleasantly surprised with the food. We enjoyed the assortment of lunch crêpes and a nice glass of rosé right across from the amphitheater.

Restaurant L'Opera offers a pleasant dining experience, especially for those seeking a simple meal. Despite being busy on our visit with a large group, the limited selection due to sold-out plates was somewhat disappointing. The service was slow, and there was an oversight in providing the drinks promptly. However, both the food and drinks themselves were satisfactory in terms of taste and quality, while being reasonably priced. Although it may not seem like much at first glance, this bistro provides delicious dishes and friendly service.

Nice place for a simple meal. We were here on a busy evening with a rather big group. As it was busy there were some plates that had been sold out, thereby limiting the choice. It took some time for the orders to be served and in the meantime they forgot to bring us our drinks. The food and drinks itself were fine and prices are in line with the quality of the food.

Parc de la Colline Saint-Eutrope, located in the heart of Orange, is a public park offering breathtaking panoramic views of the town, as well as Mont Ventoux and the Dentelles de Montmirail. The hill, once a Roman lookout point, features remnants of a 12th-century chateau that was once home to the princes of Orange.
Great park on a hill, with a really wild and natural feeling. There are many viewpoints on top from where you can admire the town and the surrounding stunning landscape, with the aim of two maps you'll find there too. It takes just a 15-20 minutes walk, mostly on stairs. I really recommend it at dawn and sunset.

A very quiet over night stop in the Park car park. If it's full there is a overflow car park on gravel very close, but uneven. The park was busy with a school education outing. The info board is interesting, use Google lens to translate the description. The drive up is one way, very narrow at the start with short in height bollards so not suitable to A-class MH, it was tight for a 6m campervan. Getting down the one way system was pretty step as expected.

Colline Saint-Eutrope is a great public park that's situated in the middle of the town of Orange. To reach the top on foot from the center, walk around the Roman theatre and find steps that go uphill. From there, it's quite a steep climb. Once there, the view is enough to make you forget the climb. But there's a few green paths to discover, a children's playground and more.
Georges Y — Google review
It is one of the highest points, at 105 m, where the remains of the old castle of the Princes of Orange are located. There is a statue of the vierge Marie and remains of the old castle of Nassau. Its current state in ruins is due to the fact that Louis XIV in 1672 ordered to besiege the citadel and destroy it, in retaliation against Guillaume III, who defended the interests of his nation (Netherlands) and the Protestant religion. From the hill you can see the whole city and the Roman theater in all its majesty.

Specialty Museums
The Aerospace Museum of Orange provides a unique opportunity to closely observe and analyze military jets. The collection primarily consists of aircraft manufactured by Dassault Aviation, but also includes examples from other countries such as Great Britain (Hawker Hunter), the USA (Vought F-8 Crusader), and the Czech Republic (Mig 21s). For aviation enthusiasts, this museum is highly recommended with its affordable entrance fee of only 3.
I really enjoyed being able to get so close to these military jets and examine their structure. The majority of the aircraft are from Dassault Aviation but there are examples from Great Britain (Hawker Hunter); USA (Vought F-8 Crusader); Czech Republic (Mig 21s). It is well worth a visit for aircraft enthusiasts with an entry fee of only €3. The person who runs the site was friendly and knowledgeable about the aircraft. He speaks very good english as we were from Scotland and will remember our visit fondly.

For €3, you see a lot of old decommissioned airplanes and you can touch them too
David H — Google review
Claude is very passionate about his planes and has a lot of different types of planes. All in all a perfect experience!
Caro E — Google review
A bunch of old and newer aircrafts, mirage and others. Soms nice people giving a explanation on the jets. Also a Belgian mirage, a rare one as most of them crashed ...
Jan H — Google review
Surprising museum, awesome for people who love fighters and even for not so passionates like myself... And you can even touch them, make pics. Claude is an enthousiastic story teller, and leaves it up to you if you wish more information. We have been roaming around for more than an hour, loved it both. And the admission fee of € 3 is all worth it. Make a call for visiting on saturday.
Carol — Google review
Very interesting. Must see! Also airbase BA 115 is 5 minutes drive from here, and every Tuesday the base aircraft museum is open to the public and you get a free guided tour where they explain everything about the aircrafts. I don't know much about aircrafts (my boyfriend loves them) but I found it very interesting and it was easier for me to appreciate the Aerospace Museum after this.

Vignobles Alain Jaume is a must-visit destination in the region, offering an exceptional wine-tasting experience and guided tours. The team's hospitality is unparalleled, making visitors feel welcome and valued. Guests can enjoy a variety of outstanding wines and even have the opportunity to join group tastings. The cellar visit provides insights into winemaking, complemented by a gastronomic meal with excellent food and wine pairings.
I highly recommend a visit to Alain Jaume. If you are in the region, it is worth a detour. Their team is unbelievably kind and welcoming. Hélène and her team we exceptional and provided a unique wine-tasting experience alongside a lovely guided tour. I arrived as a single traveler on-foot and was invited to join another group in addition to having the pleasure of a tasting of a number of their other wines. Their wine is exceptional and I recommend sending some home or purchasing a few bottles. Ask about their Champauvins or their Marc de Châteauneuf du Pape and you won't be disappointed.

4 of us went for the vineyard tour, followed by an exceptional lunch with wine pairing. The tour guide, Adrien, was fantastic, entertained all of our numerous questions. The food was 5 star and wine of great quality and they were more than happy to top up. I would thoroughly recommend the experience, amazing quality and at a very reasonable price. It was worth twice the price.

We visited the vineyard on one of their tours, which included a walk round a vineyard, a tour of the cellars and lunch with 9 wines to taste. The amount of wine to taste each time was really generous. Fortunately we could walk back to the house we were staying in, so did not have to drive. It was a wonderful day, and our guide, Aude, was really good. We would recommend this tour to anyone in the area

(Translated by Google) We had dinner last night at the guinguette. The meal was truly mediocre despite a very limited menu, which could claim to be homemade dishes, but I highly doubt it. The waiter was virtually nonexistent despite several requests, although he was a friendly person. I think he has too many tasks to fully attend to his customers. The service was slow and the food/cocktails were really poor quality. Might as well eat somewhere else and come for a drink afterward to enjoy the setting.

(Translated by Google) Great atmosphere on Friday nights, with a large crowd of families and 50-60-year-olds. The staff provides impeccable service, whether it's the highly experienced restaurant or the well-maintained dance floor. Brasserie-style dining (large salads, fish and chips, hamburgers, and more), and a full bar (very good mojitos). In short, a great place for summer in the shade under the trees (very pleasant)! 👌🔆🌲🌳 Don't hesitate.

(Translated by Google) The atmosphere is pleasant and the music contributes to a good time. On the other hand, the prices are really excessive compared to the quality offered. I ordered two salads and drinks, which cost me almost €40, which is clearly excessive. As for the goat cheese salad, it was sparse: only three pieces of cheese and a fairly limited quantity of ingredients. Overall, the quality of the food does not live up to the price asked, even if the setting remains pleasant.

Chinese restaurant
Dragon Royal is a Chinese eatery that offers delectable and flavorful cuisine. The dishes are made with high-quality ingredients, ensuring a satisfying dining experience. The meats are tender and succulent, while the highlight of their menu is the salmon sashimi. The variety of wok dishes available is commendable, providing ample choices to suit different preferences. What's more, the prices are reasonable at 18.50 per person, which includes refreshing soft drinks.
Good, fresh food. It's tasty, meats are soft and as a plus they have salmon sashimi. The wok is good, enough choices. For the price of 18,50 including soft drinks, you can't go wrong on this one

(Translated by Google) When we arrived after a 15-hour drive, we were very hungry and really looking forward to the all-you-can-eat option. After being seated, we had to wait 15 minutes to order drinks, after having to call the waiter ourselves. The food, snacks, and sushi were good, but the main courses were absolutely not fresh. We found hair on the cheese. The stir-fry sauce was sour, and by that I mean a sour, expired smell. The desserts we chose were also expired and completely sour. During our meal, we had to go to the cash register ourselves to order drinks. The staff were constantly on their phones. Definitely not recommended.

(Translated by Google) A pretty enough place, certainly, but a lack of rigor was noted. Indeed, I agree with some previous reviews, denouncing the non-existent friendliness of the staff (except when paying, of course). I just want to thank one of the waitresses who was super welcoming, smiling, and kind, the only one! What can I say about the food? Overall, it's good, however, the unthawed macarons served in a half-filled tray, so I suspect they're old. The wok? Undercooked. Nothing to add, maybe they're paid by the plate from the wok, which would explain the fact that each plate, regardless of the quantity, is dealt with in three minutes flat. Frankly disappointed. And the cherry on top, ✨the restrooms✨. To be honest, I did everything with my feet; it was so filthy that I refused to touch anything. Last point, I inquired about the price beforehand for the day of the visit, the answer was 19.90, and surprise, 21.90 at the checkout! It's only two euros, but it's not cheap. We were with a little one, falling into the children's menu formula, if we don't keep an eye on it, they count the little one as an adult meal with it.

(Translated by Google) Very disappointed with our experience. We came to this all-you-can-eat buffet restaurant on Friday evening with 11 people, arriving at 9 p.m. Before sitting down, we checked the buffet: there wasn't much left. We asked if it would be restocked, and were told yes. Unfortunately, once we were seated, very few dishes were refilled, and they were cold. The selection was extremely limited, which is unacceptable for an all-you-can-eat buffet. We expressed our dissatisfaction, but the managers were rude and offered no goodwill. We will not return and do not recommend this establishment. An all-you-can-eat buffet that empty on a Friday evening, no less, is not serious.

We were a bit unlucky because it was especially windy. The food was decent, but nothing special. Our pizza wasn't that warm anymore but our wine was too warm at the same time. The knifes could be a little bit sharper because it wasn't easy to cut our pizza. It was a really windy day so sometimes a glass would fall over, but when our neighbour's wineglass fell the waiters didn't take action until the neighbors asked for help (at least he got a new glass when he asked). At the end our experience was mostly underwhelming, but the food was okay.
