Pizzo is a picturesque Calabrian seaside town known for its historic center overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea and its sandy beaches along the Gulf of Sant’Eufemia. Visitors can explore the Aragonese castle, where Joachim Murat was imprisoned and executed, and the striking Chiesetta di Piedigrotta, a small cave church carved into the coastal rock. The town is also famous for its “tartufo di Pizzo,” a rich, hand-made ice-cream dessert served in many local gelaterie. Its compact size and scenic setting make it an easy and relaxed base for discovering this stretch of southern Italy’s coast.
With favorites like Trattoria DUDU, Castello Murat, and Church Piedigrotta, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Trattoria DUDU and Le Castellane so you can get the best taste of Pizzo while you’re here. Marina Di Pizzo

Marina Di Pizzo, a captivating seaside destination in the charming town of Pizzo, offers visitors a delightful escape from the bustling city life. Its sandy beach at Piedigrotta provides a tranquil respite for those seeking solace amidst the chaotic atmosphere nearby. The powerful and agitated sea, with its crashing waves and frothy patterns, mesmerizes onlookers with its awe-inspiring display of nature's might.
I visited the Marina Di Pizzo while I was on holiday in Pizzo, Calabria. This Marina is so beautiful in the day and especially at night. I enjoy walking along the Marina at night because the lights are so pretty. I also like to hear the sound of the sea. There are many wonderful restaurants along here where you can enjoy an Italian meal. I highly recommend a visit to this Marina in Pizzo.

Pizzo is a small seaside town with historic buildings, a cozy beach, and many good restaurants. In high season, it can get crowded with tourists. Still, it’s a nice place to visit once for a few days. 🌊🏛️🍝 With greetings from Latvia 🇱🇻 📍 @SkyGarden_Studio (luxury apartments in Jūrmala 🌊)

Beautiful blue sea! Quiet beach. Warmer water due to cover. Limited free street parking. Cafes and restaurants.

We went in the off season, a few days before Easter. It was absolutely beautiful and just warm enough. Some shops were closed but we found a nice restaurant and had a wonderful meal then played on the beach. We will return.

Pizzo is an excellent place for holidays, currently sat on the piazza enjoying a snack from one of the many restaurants, the food is amazing, pure italian passion, i will return to this spot

Bar Gelateria Ercole in Pizzo Calabro is a must-visit for anyone with a sweet tooth. Established in 1965, this charming gelateria is renowned for its delectable Tartufo, particularly the classic chocolate and hazelnut variety that has won over many visitors. Nestled in Piazza della Repubblica, it offers the perfect spot to relax under the sun while soaking up the vibrant atmosphere of this quaint town.
Best place around according to a local friend. Very tasty food, with friendly staff and quickly served. Right at the Center close to places with nice views. The price tends to be on the high price, but worth it for desserts only. Pleasant to go during the day and at night. I would recommend.

Apparently this is the place to go to if you're in Pizzo for Tartufo. It didn't disappoint. The location in the piazza is perfect, with a great vantage point towards the sea and people watching. The tartufo was fantastic. Very rich. Our server was spot on.

Amazing tartufo! We still remember the taste all this time later. A true delight. The owner is so friendly and greets you and graciously made me my own lactose free tartfufo after noticing I was the only one out of our large group not having one. So appreciated!
Silvana G — Google review
The original Tartufo from Pizzo Calabria. A must taste gelato concoction. Recommended by a Pizzo resident as the best. Original since 1968 - I believe. Good service. Don’t miss out on the legend!

Great tartufo, lovely place, fantastic people!! I planned to spend few days in Calabria and my first stop was in Pizzo where I personally really appreciated for the location and the services. Angela at Bar Ercole been just amazing - very smile and available.. she recommend the classic “tartufo” (homemade) and almond granita - deliziosi!! They are very closed to the seaside and historical city centre.. well recommend. See you soon guys

Castello Murat, also known as Murat Castle, is a well-preserved military fortress and prison located in Pizzo. Built in the 14th century, it offers historical exhibits and panoramic views of the surrounding area. The castle is famous for being the place where Joachim Murat, King of Naples and brother-in-law of Napoleon Bonaparte, was imprisoned and sentenced to death in 1815.
Nice castle in the center of Pizzo... It's famous because brother in law of Napoleon Bonaparte was imprisoned there... Now inside you can see reproduction of that... The ticket is cheap about 3e...there is not so much people there and you not wait for long for entrance... The castle is in historic central part of this little city... From there you have so nice view... All recommendations for visit and take some nice pictures and videos if you are in Pizzo and that part of Calabria...
VLAJKO P — Google review
Very friendly staff and amazing exhibition. Many original artifacts that portray the history of Joachim Murat.
Kate T — Google review
Personnel is incredibly rude. We arrived from another town to visit this castle and unfortunately it was closed from 1 till 3 pm (keep that in mind). We waited and when it finally opened, we couldn't buy tickets because cards were not accepted and the guy didn't have change. He was speaking very unfriendly and refused selling us tickets. After this communication, there was no wish to change and come back. Don't recommend for a visit.
Olga ( — Google review
You can find a very good story of Joachim Murat on it , very well illustrated The price is 5€ for adults You can see an amazing view from up there
Houssem A — Google review
the tour does not last long but there are several interesting and original (not copies) exhibits. Moreover, the view of the town from the walls is amazing.

Nicely preserved castle with a small museum inside. Definitely worth the entrance fee of 2.50 EUR. Great view over the harbour.
Harry's W — Google review
Not worth the 5€ entrance. Most signs were only in Italian with just a few in other languages. There wasn’t much to see except for the prison cells with a few creepy looking mannequins to portray Murat and the other prisoners. Would not recommend

Church Piedigrotta is a unique seaside church located in Pizzo, Calabria. It was carved into the tufa rock by Neapolitan shipwreck survivors as an expression of gratitude for their survival. The church features elaborately carved figures and statues created by unknown artists, making it a remarkable example of popular religious art in southern Italy.
Well worth the visit, fascinating story and amazing achievement. Beautiful beach below with shallow waters.
Fliss H — Google review
Very nice church (5€ entry), nice sculptures, also great beach outside, with warm water and some fishes
Adam K — Google review
Have to give it a 5 star rating just because of the story behind the church and in fact its position on the beach and built into the rocks. It is not your standard church visit but you get these sculptures all in the rocks behind the church facade. Read the story behind the church from the sign, which is In Italian and English, and you will get a better understanding of its history. It is a walk down and up again, so be prepared. It is only a 10 min visit to see it all. There is as an entry charge of 5€, which can be paid by card. It is a small price to pay to ensure it continues to exist. We had no problem parking as we are traveling on bicycles 😀.
Simon R — Google review
Extremely interesting experience. This church - cave is located just next to the beach, so beautiful and magic to be there and hear the waves sounds.

The current opening hours on Google are not correct. From November till March the church is only open on Saturdays and Sundays (see the attached picture) and only in the good weather. It might be something that's good to know in advance...

Beautiful & very interesting place to visit. Parking at the top for €5 & a stunning view on the way down (lots of steps). I think the entrance fee of €5 per adult (€3 per child) is too much. Don't forget to take your swimming things & picnic with as there is a beautiful bay at the bottom to enjoy!

Ice cream shop
Gelateria Enrico - Tartufo di Pizzo® is a renowned ice cream creation that originated in 1952 in Pizzo, Italy. It was invented by Neapolitan gelato maker Giuseppe De Maria, who improvised the dessert by shaping a sphere of chocolate and hazelnut ice cream filled with melted chocolate and dusted with cocoa powder. This unique treat has become a specialty of the city, drawing visitors from all over to taste its delightful flavors.
We saw the advertisement on road and we had decided to stop there and have tartuffo. We didn't know that tartuffo is actually ice cream :) but it was really nice. Staff was very welcoming, with good English and we have tried couple tartuffo. When you in Calabria, you should try tartuffo and this place is really good to taste it. Very recommended!

Don’t be fooled by the appearance of the treats. They probably use cheap ingredients. We tried three types of the so-called “Tartufo” and none of them were tasty. The ice cream, the chocolate – everything tasted off, even the pistachios were rancid. The female staff was also rude.

Simply put: a dream in the shape of a rounded ice cream. I stopped by en route to Capo Vaticano to taste their renowned tartufo in a lovely and quite garden. Loved the atmosphere, loved the tartufo, loved the friendly staff. I'll be back!

We came there 2times during the day. Location and garden are very nice. There were always some free spots at the table. We tasted the Tartufo, it was good, however not as tasty as we had in pizzo couple of days ago. Staff was fast and we didn't have to wait for a long time.

Trattoria DUDU is a charming restaurant located in the heart of Pizzo, offering a peaceful dining experience despite its central location. The chef's expertise shines through in the consistently fresh and delicious food, with standout dishes like seafood pasta and Strocatura pasta. The welcoming owner ensures that guests are well taken care of, going above and beyond to accommodate everyone. Using locally sourced meat adds an extra layer of quality to the already tasty meals.
Wooooow! Super delicious food. Definitely the hidden gem of Pizzo. The meat was super tasty, and we were told they get the meat from local cows instead of meat from the supermarket. It's definitely a must go restaurant, I highly recommend it as it is delicious and prices are very reasonable. I am leaving some photos of what we ate.

Wow. We both had a linguine dish and the flavours and textures were some of the best food we have had in Italy. It's a small and personal place and it shows in the food, made with love. Oh and it came we a bag full of rustic hot bread, win! A must for anyone visiting Pizzo.

We went few days ago (Jan 2024) they were very welcoming with everyone introducing the dishes of the day and giving advice. They treated everyone like part of their family and the Strocatura pasta was delicious! The local wine was delicious either. Also they gifted us with an amaro liquor shot and an espresso coffee at the end. Can’t wait to go there again as soon as possible. Thank you

Good food, good quantity, lot of mussels and clams in the vongole spaguetti. 12 euros for spaguetti vongole, 10 euros lasagna, only 6 or 8 dishes in the menu but prepared at the moment. Nice guy . Nice terrace. They also have calzone to take away for 3 euros. Prices of drinks and food are in the photo i uploaded. Copperto i think they charged me around 1 euro

One of the biggest and best surprises in Calabria. This is trattoria not restaurant but the food was delicious and portions big. We arrived early afternoon so probably the restaurant wasn’t fully working yet. The waiter took a long time to take our order. Dishes were lackluster and felt like was preparing in a rush. The location is golden: right at the heart of the town but quality didn’t seem to match it.

Went there end of September with 4 people. Not many guests. We ordered 4 Pizza, 2x 0,5l house wine and 1 bottle of water. Very nice view on the main piazza and mare. Service was fast and friendly. Wine was good and affordable with 5 euros/0,5L. Pizza was tasty and not overpriced. We paid at all ca. 50 Euros for 4 persons. That not too much for the main place in Pizzo. We would come again for pizza and house wine.

Beautiful situated on an outdoor terrace overlooking the Pizzo marina. Offering a wide ranging menu. Food: Pizzas were cooked to perfection with a variety of options to appease all tastebuds. Crispy crust with generous toppings. Service: Giorgio ensured our party was looked after. He checked in on us frequently, and brought the pizza chef for a meet and greet. Giorgio did not let us leave without trying Pizzos famous Tartufo which topped off the night. Atmosphere: Our party of 8 was conveniently located in the alfresco with ample room. Variety of seating options inside and out on the terrence. Forte fella Manocella is worth the stop over with breathtaking views.

what a wonderful place to visit and enjoy a meal. for the price of a reasonably priced meal you can enjoy one of the best views and atmospheres anywhere. try and visit as the sun is going down for obvious reasons. the restaurant owner, Emmanuella, chatted to us because my wife had ordered a simple off menu dish that she quite like the look of herself. she invited us to access the terrace paths that climb the cliff face and give a grand view of the resort and restaurant. wonderful gesture. the food was great too served well by Georgia an English speaking waiter, which isn't common in Calabria.

The food was good if a little overpriced compared to other restaurants in the area. The views from the roof balcony were stunning. The service on the other hand… considering there were only 2 couples as customers and there were at least 3 waiters… was poor. Is was a Monday hopefully other days the service gets better. UPDATE… what a difference a day (or two) make… decided to go again as the food is good. This time around the service was great.

The greatest restaurant experience I‘ve ever had! We had 6 vegetarian courses and every meal was thought through and through and tasted amazing (I am still dreaming about the beans, truffle pasta and the dessert...). The cook asked if there’s anything we don’t like, which we really liked. The waitress also was really kind and attentive, always making sure we had everything we needed. And the place in general is beautiful! The view is amazing and we felt really comfortable and welcome. 10/10!

We chose San Domenico for our last evening here and it could not have been a better choice. We had the vegetarian degustation menu and even as someone who usually eats meat, it was amazing through and through. Each course was crafted with immense love and detail which was noticable with eye and tongue. Service was perfect, food was perfect - I'm still amazed a day later! What I liked especially was the indirect lighting on the outdoor terrace. It was a beautiful setting for an evening filled with good food and wine. We will absolutely come back!
