Masham in 1 day

If you only have 1 day to spend in Masham, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Masham is a traditional market town on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, known for its broad Georgian market square and weekly livestock auctions. It’s home to two renowned breweries, Theakston and Black Sheep, both offering tours and tastings. Visitors use Masham as a base for walking and cycling in surrounding moorland and along the River Ure, including nearby Hackfall Woods and Druid’s Temple. The town also hosts seasonal events and fairs, such as an annual sheep fair reflecting its strong farming heritage.
With favorites like The Gallery, Joneva, and Johnny Baghdad's Cafe on the Square, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Johnny Baghdad's Cafe on the Square and Bordar House Teas so you can get the best taste of Masham while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

The Kings Head is a charming hotel located in an 18th-century stone inn, featuring cozy rooms and a traditional oak-beamed restaurant and bar. This classic establishment also offers meeting rooms, making it a great choice for business travelers. Its Georgian setting provides an elegant backdrop for wedding receptions and other celebrations.
5 of us arrived at 6pm without booking on a very busy Friday before the Sheep fair. Even though they were fully booked and rushed off their feet the staff were very welcoming and managed to squeezed us in. Our meal was excellent. I had the salmon fish cake which was definitely home made, packed with salmon and delicious. 2 steak pies were demolished and 2 Belly pork, all excellent. Great beer, great food and excellent staff,(especially Sophie!). Thankyou for a great night.

We booked into this hotel last minute at 10.45pm due to a last minute change in travel. The gentleman that was on shift was very welcoming and accommodating. We were showed to our room and it was big enough for a family of 4, clean and modern. We had a comfortable nights sleep. We went for breakfast which the service was spot on. Gaye served us and she was nothing but friendly and welcoming. Definitely a good little last minute find. We will be staying again.

A cute little pub in a village a very popular one which also offers B&B location is perfect. A small beer garden out the back the size from the front of the pub is deceiving its alot bigger inside. A warm friendly pub with good service, dog friendly with blankets dog water and a treat station..comfortable seating areas split into different sections. The food was lovely the pictures say it all, these meals weren't our first choice those had gone for the day but we enjoyed these all the same. It was hot and delicious 😋 the dessert was a little on the small side and definitely a slither of cherry bakewell, leaving room for a nice coffee ☕️ I did find the prices a little on the pricey side and would say its around 30 -40 per person for a meal drink and dessert 🍨

Absolutely gorgeous room, exposed beams, big bathroom with separate bath and shower, very clean! Comfy beds! Bar food is excellent as is the restaurant food and the service is great too. Great beers on tap… especially the Old Peculiar. Breakfast was wonderful, I had the perfect poached eggs and smoked salmon, travel buddy had the full English which looked wonderful and large! Gaye and Chris were our hosts at breakfast, and were so friendly, it was a bit like family breakfast.

Stayed one night on a business trip, The room was in a courtyard and a very unique setting. Room was very clean and comfortable. The food at the restaurant for dinner and breakfast was amazing, 5 star service from staff, All who were very friendly and welcoming . They all made the visit very enjoyable. There are four car chargers at the front door of the hotel which was an added bonus.

Can't really fault this place. Ideal location for touring the North Yorkshire dales. Right in the square with ample parking. The staff were excellent, Charlotte, Sophie, Jo and Emma in the kitchen. We had an evening meal and breakfast and the food was very good and well presented. It's also dog friendly so will probably be back when not on two wheels.
Tom L — Google review
Really great food and such friendly service! The lamb shank shepherds pie was delicious and the burger was one of the best we have had. This is a very dog friendly pub which was so lovely. The staff were attentive with a great Yorkshire sense of humour which we appreciated!

We had a one- night stay at the King's Head. All the staff were friendly and welcoming. Our room was a good standard with everything we needed. We ate in the bar and enjoyed our meal. Breakfast the next day was very good with lots of options. Gaye and Chris put everyone at ease - quite the double act!

The Nolon Stacey Gallery offers an impressive collection of pencil and charcoal drawn wildlife and dog pictures. It provides a relaxed browsing experience without any pressure. The presence of the artist, Nolon, adds a nice touch to the visit. Although no purchase was made during the visit, the beautiful pictures seen will be considered for online purchases later on. Overall, this gallery is highly recommended when in Masham. Furthermore, these prints were initially discovered at a Christmas fair in York in December 2022.
Remarkable art.. Nolon Stacey’s pencil work is breathtakingly beautiful.. as I walked in I thought I had entered a photo gallery with the eyes of some sheep opposite looking back at me .. all of the animals, birds and landscapes are meticulously rendered by the artist who was present, very helpful and informative. Thank you Mr. Nolon Stacey. 🙌🏽
Jayshree B — Google review
Amazing selection of pencil and charcoal drawn wildlife and dogs. Very relaxed place to browse. No pressure. Nolon was there when we visited so really nice to have the actual artist there. Although we didn't buy anything at the time we saw some beautiful pictures which we'll look at buying on line. Overall a lovely place. Recommended when you're in Masham.
Ade0410 — Google review
We visited Nolon's gallery today and were firstly greeted by his adorable dog Murphy, then Nolon. We were absolutely amazed at all the incredible drawings that were displayed. We saw one of Fountains Abbey, which is where we got married. I just bought a card for a friend. As it was my birthday, unbeknown to me my husband had bought the picture over the phone and Nolon had delivered it to The Kings Head where we would be eating later. Nolon had even put a birthday card in for me! I was totally suprised....it really made my day and i will treasure the painting forever. Thank you Nolon....and my lovely husband!😁

First saw these prints at a Christmas fair in York in December 2022. Waited for the right moment to place an order and went for the Raven III print (unframed) to go in my new home office. It looks absolutely incredible. Fast delivery, goods well packaged and fantastically presented. I will definitely be buying more in future.

The shop also features an excellent wine shop called Corks & Cases. Visitors praise the competitive prices, excellent quality service, and a wide range of old-school sweets, gifts, food, drinks, and ice cream.
Such a lovely shop, in a special location. Had a lovely experience. Bought my mum some chocolates, she said they were delicious! The ice cream was amazing!! The best I’ve had in a long time!! When I got home I realised I’d picked the wrong coaster but emailed and had 5 star service, sent me the opposite mug and coaster in the post. Came in a few days, packaged well. Highly recommend a visit to this little gem!
Nyree B — Google review
The shop itself is adorable, with a nostalgic vibe that makes browsing even more enjoyable. The staff were lovely—friendly, helpful, and clearly passionate about their treats. I loved their huge selection. Some great local cheeses there too. If you’re in Masham, don’t miss Joneva Sweet Shop—it’s a delightful spot for treats, gifts, or just a little indulgence. I’ll definitely be back!
Balefire L — Google review
Excellent sweet shop with everything you could hope for! The fudge is superb and so is the ice cream. Very popular shop particularly in the summer months. Always call in here when we're visiting Masham. Huge range of all types of sweet things! Adults will enjoy it just as much as children! Highly recommended.
Ade0410 — Google review
Wondering if the fridge wasn’t working properly, the ice cream was of the consistency of being warm, with a defrosted greasiness to it. The cone wasn’t fresh. Cones should be crispy and brittle , this was heading more towards wet cardboard. Sadly most of it went in the bin. Portion size was quite measly too, considering the cost. I have called here before when passing through and had lovely ice cream but on this occasion I was definitely given the dregs! ☹️

A lovely shop with welcoming staff & full of delicious delights. Had some of the most authentic tasting milk bottle gums that took me back to my child hood.

I'd have to agree that this was the best ice cream we tatsed on our Yorkshire trip - and from a very nice little sweet shop in the market place, with very helpful and friendly staff. Great location, too with a fabulous church nearby if you feel like a dose of spiritual connection after your ice cream!

Lovely people and nice food & beers. We were greeted so lovely that we felt at home immediately. The room for the night was comfy and dinner and beers were great. Also the pub is dog friendly, so you might be lucky to see some dogs. Would definitely stay here again!

We stayed at The Bay Horse in Masham and had a really nice stay. Our room was spacious and very comfortable, with a good bed and plenty of big pillows. The bathroom was modern and clean, though the shower was quite small. The inn itself is cozy and welcoming, with a classic village pub vibe. It’s located right in the heart of Masham, just a short walk from the main square, which makes it a great base for exploring the town and nearby breweries. Service was friendly, and overall it was a relaxing and pleasant stay. Would happily return next time we’re in the area!

Great Real ales! Right in the heart of Masham, this pub is a little gem. The menu isn't at all extensive, but it served our needs perfectly. Staff were friendly and helpful, serving us with exactly what we needed. We didn't stay here. Would recommend and we will be back next time we're passing.

Recently taken over by Neil and Scott, this is a fabulous place to stay and eat. Super comfortable, super friendly and very high standards throughout. Neil is a superb chef and the food was amazing and reasonably priced. The bar area is quirky, cosy and a great place for a drink and a chat with locals and staff alike. We will be back!

Visited twice. Once for a drink and came back to try the food. Everything was home cooked from scratch, proper classic British menu but really did hit the spot. We had steak and ale pie and fish and chips. Very generous portions. Probably the best pub food I’ve had in years! Also, service was fantastic. We sat at a smaller table and due to a reservation cancelling the waitress asked us if we wanted a bigger table, lovely touch.

A warm welcome from the new tenants in The Bay Horse. Great selection of beers and drinks as well as friendly conversation. The room was beautiful and overlooked the Masham Square. We ate in the evening at the pub which was good quality and the full English breakfast was amazing. Hope to visit again soon.

Great place for a cup of tea and a piece of cake, or a full meal if that takes your fancy. We had the orange and chocolate cake 🎂 - so orangy and chocolatey. The place was packed on Bank Holiday Monday, but the staff worked so hard to accommodate everyone.

Upon arriving in masham and seeing no one about but plenty of cars parked up, we did wonder where every was. On entering the cafe we soon found out. The place was packed, really busy. We got the last table that was free at that time. Two cappuccinos a slice of coffee & walnut cake & a very generous slice of blueberry & lemon cake were ordered. Both cakes were very tasty. Prices were good. Approximately £12.

We only had coffee and cake, but found this, the atmosphere and the staff great. If we had arrived a little sooner, we would have had a main meal - the menu board looked very interesting. We planned to come back to Masham and will definitely return to this gorgeous little café.

We popped in here for a bite to eat before meeting up with family in Masham. The spicy lamb wrap was a tastebud sensation. Joanne had the goats cheese wrap. I can’t describe how flavourful the food was, so good we came back for breakfast with our friends this morning. Well done…superb!

Found a table waitress took order from table next to us. We asked if we could order and she said I’ll just be a minute. 10 minutes later no sign then she went to another table who had just arrived and asked east they wanted. Might be good if they choose to serve you

No idea what the name has to do with a small North Yorkshire cafe, with internal decoration from Vietnam and other far east countries. However, this IS A CAFE TO VISIT. Great food & wonderful staff. Plus really friendly customers, in the winter anyway. I had the smoked salmon & dill quiche - delicious. I spoke to the couple on the next table, they were local.& used the cafe all the time. The food looked amazing. Deep joy on the faces of everyone. I can recommend the chocolate & pistachio cake. (Had previously as a gift from the wife)

During our visit to Masham (June '25) for our holiday to North Yorkshire we found this cafe on the main square. We sat outside as we didn't want our Labradoodle puppy to cause havoc inside, but there are plenty of picnic tables for use. We had the best bacon and egg baps/cobs/butties we've ever had! So much bacon and a deliciously runny egg. Cappuccinos were good too.

As always I couldn't find fault with this cafe.i had a breakfast which I've never had here before and it was excellent.everything on the plate was top quality and cooked perfect. The cafe was very busy being a Sunday and nice weather but we didn't have to wait long for the food to arrive and all the staff were exceptional. definitely one of my fav places to go..just wish I lived closer so I could go more often

4 of us went in (5/8/25), 2 sat down, 2 went to order, but were totally ignored by the 5 staff behind the counter - not a smile or an acknowledgement - for at least 5 minutes. They seemed surprised when we walked out and went to the cafe across the square, where we were made most welcome.

What lovely, friendly and obliging staff, very cheerful and helpful. Prime site overlooking the market square in Masham. I had a green tea and a banana milkshake, the latter which they don't normally proffer for takeout. Has some outdoor seating on the pavement. I also had the most scrummiest fruit and cherry flapjack which was quite moist - went down well with the sparrows and the blackbirds too who were foraging for their young. Would definitely call here again and can still taste that lovely flapjack. Yum!

Harry's Traditional Fish and Chips is a beloved gem nestled in the heart of Masham market place, renowned for its exceptional quality and friendly service. This award-winning chippy not only offers a delightful dining experience with both sit-in and takeaway options but also boasts generous portion sizes that leave customers satisfied. The fish, often haddock, is expertly cooked in a crispy batter, while the chips are perfectly fried to achieve that ideal crunch.
Fabulous chippy, delicious fish & chips (and very generous portion size). All cooked to order and subsequently very fresh. Very tasty gravy and curry sauce. Fish bits too. We wish we had a chippy like this at home! Would recommend 10/10.
Chris W — Google review
Very friendly man serving who was obviously committed to his business. Good sized portin of chips that were well cooked and tasted very nice. I was a little concerned that the fish was haddock as I only usually eat cod, but I risked it and to be fair it was very nice (and no bones too). Very reasonable prices at just under £10 for fish and chips.
