Santona in 2 days

If you only have 2 days to spend in Santona, we’ve narrowed down the top places you should check out to get the best experience of your time here.
Santoña is a small Cantabrian seaside town known for its fishing heritage and high-quality canned anchovies, which you can sample in local shops and bars. It sits beside protected marshlands that form part of the Santoña, Victoria and Joyel Natural Park, a key birdwatching area on the Bay of Biscay. Nearby beaches such as Berria offer long stretches of sand and good conditions for surfing and swimming. The dramatic Monte Buciero headland, with coastal trails, lighthouses and old fortifications, adds scenic hiking and panoramic views over the coast.
With favorites like Restaurant Pascual "El Chili", Conservas Emilia, and Faro del Caballo, we’ll make sure you don’t miss out on all the must sees. We even included some of our favorite food spots around the area, like Thanis 2.0 and Restaurant Pascual "El Chili" so you can get the best taste of Santona while you’re here. To see our full list of food recommendations, check out our best restaurants post. If you're traveling on a budget, you can check out our cheap eats post.

Lighthouses
Faro del Caballo is a stunning destination located near the fortress of San Felipe. The coastal cliffs offer breathtaking views, making it a worthwhile trek for nature enthusiasts. However, accessing the lighthouse requires descending and climbing over 500 stairs, so visitors should be physically fit. Despite the challenging hike, the opportunity to kayak and swim in the caves makes it all worthwhile. Additionally, Santona offers clean waters for swimming and beautiful landscapes to explore.
Can't believe this isn't part of the Camino del Norte route. We took a detour to visit this amazing coastline and take a dip in the pristine water...boy were we spoilt.

SHAME ON THE ORGANISATION Going there is disappointing as you need tIcket, which in google says 15 eur on other Homepage it is free.. IN FAQ OF THE FARRO IT SAYS no need for ticket .. But anyway the official homepage does not really say anything, the Sign on the street are tiny and almost not notable half the way .. FRUSTRATING ,DUMP AND ANNOYING going there more than an hour and then no entrance.. Some signs are unmotivated and really hard to see and find .. on the maps there is no information at all. Maybe local tourist information thinks tourists better not to inform in a proper way?? SHAME ON THE PEOPLE WHO DECIDED THIS, poor girl who works there an explains hundreds of frustrated tourists the sorry you cannot enter. And why 50 person limit per hour? Security only problems for some hours a day, the rest of the time it is not dangerous?? Or why ? The picture shows frustrated tourists not allowed to enter ..
Norbert E — Google review
Incredible hike! Not too challenging for athletes but those not used to hiking or running may find it challenging, especially the way back. The rope swing at the end is awesome as well! Bring bug spray during the summer because the trail is thick with horseflies. Luckily, for those without repellent, the entrance at the top of the stairs has extra if you go during normal hours.
Ryan J — Google review
Beware this is like a 12k walk up a mountain and in some parts are rockies then you have a 700 downwards steps leading to the most impressive views and if y like you can take a plunge in to the sea. Now the going up is challenging, if you are not in good cardio think about going down make sure have good hiking shoes and bring plenty of water. good luck have fun and be careful.
Frank — Google review
It is probably great but you need to get a free ticket from limited pool of 100 per every 2 hours. Unfortunately we didn’t know about it and we were not allowed to get down to the lighthouse and missed main part of our trip :( Maybe we will have a chance to come back someday.
Piotr K — Google review
Beautiful and stunning place to go to. It was also incredibly fun to jump in the water and swim around. The water was a little harsh so someone going in should definitely know how to swim well. The only negative thing about this place is that the hike to get there was extremely tiring. About two miles but all on cobble road and uphill and then a set of 700+ really sketchy stairs.
Elliot — Google review
It's free to visit, however you need to book the passage of the 763 stairs during the summer months. It's not for the faint hearted! My daughter did the stairs down then back up in about 30 mins. The track up to the top of the stairs is uneven, but easy to follow.

Fuerte de San Carlos is a historic fortress located in a picturesque setting with stunning views of the Ria de Laredo. Accessible from the seafront Paseo Pereda, it offers an excellent vantage point to admire the Santonia bay. The fortress is part of a scenic walk that leads to an old lighthouse, passing through woods and along steep cliffs with breathtaking views of the Cantabrian Sea.
Excellent view. Probably not for more than an hour, unless you want to walk through one of the tracks that take you through the coast and hills.

It's abandonned, unkept, full of graffiti. Kind of scary if you ask me. It's a shame it's not properly looked after, a part of history getting lost.

(Translated by Google) Beautiful Romanesque church on the outside, inside there is a Romanesque part, the one closest to the door, and a transition to Gothic as we approach the altar. I loved the cover, with those birds on the capitals and especially for a detail that I had not seen until now, some decorations at the base of each column. Inside it has very elaborate columns and it seems majestic. Why do I say guess? Because thank goodness it was open, but very dark inside. The visit was part of the Santoña Peregrina activity, which is a free guided walk organized by the City Council. There is a beautiful baptismal font from the 16th century. XII, although according to the guide it was from the s. IX. The image of the Virgin is said to have been carried by Juan de la Cosa on the flagship the Santa María, when he traveled with Columbus in 1492. In fact, the ship the Marigalante was his, which was later renamed the Santa Maria.

(Translated by Google) Aside from the parish's history, its architecture, and so on, when you enter—at least the first time I entered, almost 20 years ago—a kind of magic happens. You're immersed in the figures of its saints, all of them very beautiful, in its welcoming space, in the peace you feel when you enter even though it's empty. It makes you feel like you've come home. And when there's Mass, it's beautiful and traditional, simple, and reaches out to all its parishioners. For us, it holds great value in every way. Te hace sentir que has vuelto a casa.

Agustin M — Google review
(Translated by Google) We visited this Romanesque (proto-Gothic or transitional) style temple from the first half of the 13th century. It was part of a Benedictine monastery, probably erected in the 8th century, at the time of the repopulation of the area. It is a Burgundian model building, with three naves, the central one wider and higher than the side ones. The pillars that support the naves have a circular core, although some columns from the purely Romanesque temple are preserved. The church follows the Cistercian stylistic tradition although it has numerous later additions, such as the transept and apse that are from the 16th century, the 18th century tower (recently demolished and replaced by a belfry), the choir and the sacristy. In the 16th century, great works were done in the old building. The apse and the transept were demolished and those seen today were built, Gothic from the year 1532, with enormous vaults and multiple keystones. In the depths of the vaults you can see the busts of the apostles and themes that refer to the Discovery of America. In the 17th century, the side chapels were opened, which have some quite interesting baroque altarpieces, including the altarpiece of San Bartolome and the altarpiece of San Pedro. On the main altar, the Gothic image of the titular patron saint of the church stands out. From the exterior, the portal at the entrance to the site stands out, a stone arch built between 1660 and 1661. It was declared a National Monument on June 3, 1931. An interesting and recommended visit.

(Translated by Google) It is the small museum of Santoña. The dioramas that are there stand out, showing the geography of the territory and above all the large dioramas that show the wetlands, their composition, and the fauna and flora that inhabit them. It has a large model or small diorama that shows how wetlands are filled and emptied by the tides. The pity is that the mechanism does not work, but one can sense that it must have been very illustrative. Also very interesting is the shape of the building, which has a roof in the form of a ramp that becomes a viewpoint. (Original) És el petit museu de Santoña. Restaurant Pascual "El Chili" is a popular seafood establishment that offers a variety of delicious dishes. Despite the long wait times to get in, patrons can enjoy mouthwatering grilled sardines, anchovies cooked on a charcoal grill, bonito with onion chutney and papers, and gambas a la plancha (although some may find it not as good). The service is quick and the location is excellent, making it a favorite among locals.
We are four generations eating there. This place connects me to my childhood. Every time, it brings me back more than 40 years to spend quality time with my grandparents: great staff and team, delicious food, and a magnificent setting. Let’s preserve the tradition and serenity of this environment.

We came for the first time in the summer of 2017 and we liked it so much. In2021, the price raised a little bit, the quality stayed the same and the service is what you have with a chiringuito. So overall, we are still very happy with it and still recommend this restaurant.

Very difficult to get a table ( is like everybody wants to eat here). After the food arrived, we understood why: very tasty, delicious, fantastic. Wonderful experience and we loved it there. Just to make you understand how much is this restaurant appreciated, I'll tell you what I saw after we stepped out. People ordered food even if they didn't have a table and ate all over the place around the restaurant: on the benches, on the beach, on a fence near the restaurant.... I'm not a food critic and probably I"ll always find my grandma's food better than what you find in a 3 Michelin Star restaurant. The fact that I saw all the people eating around the restaurant confirmed my opinion about the deliciousness of the food you can eat here.

El Restaurante De Pilar offers a delightful experience with its seafood tapas, renowned house cheesecake, and cocktails served on a patio overlooking the port. Visitors are pleasantly surprised by the stunning views from the restaurant. It's also conveniently located near an area where fresh fish can be purchased. The place is perfect for enjoying evening coffee or beer while admiring the dusk or simply appreciating nature.

This place really surprised me as there was so much frog the day we arrived. We walked around this area and didn't really think anything of it. But a couple days after, we were honestly blown away by the views! I can't really say anything about the restaurant as we only ordered some beers! Also around that area you can buy fresh fish aswell! ;)

(Translated by Google) It's what you're looking for when you go to a northern fishing village: good fish, very friendly service, and even though the restaurant may be outdated, it doesn't detract from the experience, since what you're looking for here is good food. The clams were delicious, but the seafood sauce was exquisite, and the rice with prawns was unbeatable. Day 2

Center of town
For day 2, we recommend exploring the center side of town. Start the day off with Playa de Berria, then wind down and take it easy by the time you get to Conservas Emilia. All together, your day would be filled with about 6 hours of non-stop fun.

Outdoor Activities
Playa de Berria is a 2km-long, Blue Flag beach with white sand facing the Bay of Biscay. It's popular for swimming, sunbathing, and surfing. The beach offers amenities like bathrooms, showers, food, and hotels nearby. Despite being cooler and windier than the South of Spain, it boasts unbounded beauty and diverse landscapes. Visitors can enjoy fantastic views and explore cliffs and caves during low tide.
This is a fantastic beach and one of the best i have ever seen. It is my favorite stop in Spain. The cliffs and caves during low tide are Magic. Free parking. Beautiful sand and colour of water. But the caves on the right side are unreal. Go during low tide.

Blanca B — Google review
Even more than the beach itself, which is awesome, I liked a lot all the way to come here, passing the bridges over the marshland. The beach is very wild and it was my first time surfing here. High quality waves altough its quite overcrowed...even in low season. We were like 60 people for 2 peaks.
Rutas A — Google review
Beautiful beach, very wide and deep, so lots of space. Would recommend . There is a prison right behind the beach!
Jonathan M — Google review
We stayed here in an apartement right at the beach for a bit more than a week in April. It's a very nice, very clean beach. Wide and long. Fantastic views left and right. It's the Spain's North, so it's cooler and windier than in the more popular South. But for us the North is more interesting, it has lots of charm and so many different landscapes. Great food as well and lots of beautiful villages. Some days it was pretty windy and the sand blew in our faces, on other days perfectly calm and even warm for April. A great beach to walk on (too cold for us to swim in springtime). Morning and/or afternoons. Even though dogs are officially banned, in the off-season almost everybody had their dog with. Good for us, so our Bulldog was able to have some fun on the beach as well. Even though lots of dogs, the beach was spotless clean. Everybody picks up after their pets and pretty much nobody leaves any trash behind. Please do so as well when visiting. There are plenty of (free) parking lots along the beach. And in Spring, especially in times of Covid-19, there were always lots of empty spaces to park. Even on warm sunny days the numbers of visitors were very low. A lovely, quiet beach. That will change in summertime, judging by other photos. It also seems to be a great spot for surfing and windsurfing. A surf school is even located on the eastern end of the beach (as well as a prison: they must have great views from their cells). A really fantastic beach. Loved it. It was a joy to walk here daily and/or just enjoy the views of it. Also a very safe spot, never felt strange even in the middle of the night. So, if you visit Santona, head for this lovely beach...or try to stay a few nights even.

Just to clarify..3 stars for the organization of the vist. It's was short, no enthusiasm from the host, the process was not shown..but 5 stars for the quality of the anchovies.

We have been visiting multiple canning factories across Portugal and Spain in this location. People were not friendly staff don’t speak English. Their selection is average. There are better canning factories on the same street where people treat you like you are the customer.

(Translated by Google) We went to visit the town of Santoña and wanted to visit a cannery. After seeing several that we'd already confirmed we could visit, and others that cost money to enter, we went to "Conservas Emilia," which costs €0 to enter and has more flexible hours. The staff was very attentive and explained everything very well. At the end of the visit, we tasted anchovies, which were delicious, by the way. We took home various pâtés. I recommend the piquillo peppers stuffed with mushrooms and shrimp, and of course the anchovies. Highly recommended. Totalmente recomendable.

Tapas bar
Don Vino Santoña, located in the center of Santona, offers a delightful selection of pintxos that are both delicious and new. The menu boasts a diverse range of options to cater to different tastes. While the wines on offer are satisfactory, they may not leave a lasting impression. With its pleasant ambiance and attentive staff, this tapas bar is definitely worth a visit.
Best of the best in Santoña for wine and pulpo! The pintxhos are varied and creative. Good Albariño, beer on tap too…

(Translated by Google) A 10/10 experience. The sangria was spectacular, very well-balanced, and refreshing. They surprised us with a complimentary appetizer: salmon and cheese toast, a thoughtful touch from the waiter that already set the standard for service. The tomato with anchovy pesto was simply excellent, high quality. The scallop, red shrimp, and orange rice was the highlight of the meal: original, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. The dessert rounded out the evening on a high note. Both the location and the service were impeccable. Definitely a return visit. (Original) Una experiencia de 10. (Translated by Google) Hello, I came with expectations based on the reviews about this restaurant and I was looking forward to enjoying the food and having a good time there. I have to say that the food was delicious, well presented, and of good quality. I would definitely go back for it again, except for the bread, which was from the day before (a basket with 8 slices of stale bread). The bread was a shame, really. Special mention to the water. They charge you 1.50 for tap water, but it was "filtered," according to the waitress when we mentioned why they were charging us for tap water. This detail, in a restaurant of this caliber, is a shame and a bad detail, really... without further ado, and apart from those two details, I would recommend eating at the As de Guía restaurant. Best regards and see you soon.

(Translated by Google) As de Guía (Santoña, Cantabria): A First-Class Gastronomic Experience by the Sea If you're looking for somewhere to eat in Santoña and enjoy the best local cuisine with a creative touch, the As de Guía restaurant is a must-see. Located in the heart of Cantabria, this restaurant combines seafaring tradition with impeccable signature cuisine. During our visit in June, we tried their spectacular black rice, perfectly cooked and intensely flavored with the sea. As a starter, we had classic fresh squid rings—crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, just as they should be on the Cantabrian coast. The icing on the cake was the desserts: a torrija (Spanish champion at the León National Competition), which truly lives up to its title, and a homemade brownie with ice cream that delighted with its texture and balance. The service was warm and attentive, the atmosphere cozy, and the location perfect for an after-lunch stroll through the port of Santoña. Ideal for couples, families, or culinary getaways in Cantabria. Without a doubt, one of the best restaurants in Santoña to enjoy local produce and quality cuisine.

(Translated by Google) Very good homemade food, everything we tried was delicious. It's well located in Santoña and is usually quite busy, so I recommend booking in advance. The staff is friendly, although if you can book at the last minute, it's better, because during the busiest times you can tell they try to get there quickly to serve more people. On the downside, the menu is on a screen that scrolls too quickly, making it hard to see the dishes. I had to take photos to see them in detail. Even so, I definitely recommend it: the food is very good and it's worth it.

(Translated by Google) Set lunch menu for €20 Expensive for what they offer. We came here because of the Google and TripAdvisor reviews. There was a good atmosphere. They don't have a physical menu with the daily specials; instead, they display them on TV screens. Very original. Regarding the food, I ordered salmorejo as a starter, and I have to say it was the typical boxed salmorejo from the supermarket. The rest of the dishes on the set menu were homemade, but my partner was served a breaded escalope in sauce. It was fried in burnt oil (black, you can see the breading in the photo). We asked to change our dish, and they didn't mind. We ordered pork loin with potatoes, and it also came out with black bits from the oil (you can see it in the photo). The service was a bit slow; there was a long wait between courses, and then there was the incident with the escalope. Some desserts were homemade, and others weren't. Children's menu for €14.90. I won't be back.
